Equipment

Huawei P10 is packaged in a small cardboard box: white color, minimalistic design, laconic inscriptions with a bright red accent.

It opens in a rather original way: the doors slide apart - inside there is a phone in the tray, under it there is a folder with documents, a paper clip and a bumper, below there are 2 boxes with a headset and a charger. Initially, the doors were fastened with a sticker - a trace remained from it. The manufacturer immediately applied a protective film to the screen.

Appearance

For review, we received the most modest color option from Pantone - graphite black. The younger model has compact dimensions: width - about 14.5 by 7 cm, thickness - almost 7 mm. The creators of the new flagship abandoned their signature sharp corners and most shiny elements - the new P10 acquired soft edges, relying on a monochromatic palette. At the same time, the device lost its individuality and began to resemble the iPhone 7.

On the black matte cover with a discreet logo on top there is a glossy strip: on the left there is the same camera with a dual LED flash. Under the latter there is a laser sensor invisible to the eye. On the right is the LEICA logo and the name of the module SUMMARIT-H 1:2:2/27 ASPH. Below is faded white information about the manufacturer and model code. Hidden antennas with dark colors are practically indistinguishable.

P10 is a so-called “frameless” display with a 5.1" display (6.4 by 11.3 cm), although the screen has a thin black edge. The front panel is covered with protective 2.5D glass. In the center of the one and a half centimeter “platform” above the screen is located speaker. To the left are light and proximity sensors, a front camera and an LED indicator (flashes green and blue when charging and indicating new notifications). Below the screen there is an oblong control button “recessed” into the surface about a millimeter, combined with a fingerprint sensor.

On the left edge there is a tray for a SIM card / memory card. On the right is a volume slider and a ribbed power button, accented with a red frame. On the top edge there is a neat microphone point. On the bottom: in the center is a micro-USB Type-C port, on the left is a microphone and a classic 3.5 mm headphone jack, on the right is an external speaker.

The elegant Huawei P10 with rounded sides fits well in the hand - the convenient diagonal of the screen allows you to easily operate the device with one hand. The amazing lightness of the metal smartphone is striking - it feels almost weightless. The only negative: the phone is very thin, smooth and constantly tries to slip out of your hand like a fish.

To handle it more confidently, we strongly recommend wearing a case. The kit, for example, already has a plastic bumper - quite nice, transparent with a matte corrugated surface. In its basic “clothes” the device looks quite organic, although it becomes somewhat rougher and thicker.

Display

Compared to its predecessor P9, the new P10 has a screen with a smaller, but more convenient diagonal of 5.1 inches (64 by 113 mm). The display meets modern flagship standards: IPS, Full resolution HD, the latest 2.5D safety glass. Corning Gorilla Glass 5 can withstand a fall from the so-called “selfie height” - approximately 160 cm. Huawei did not set itself the task, like Samsung, of completely getting rid of the frame: there is a thin black “side”, but it does not hurt the eye.

The display supports 10 simultaneous touches; the smartphone is pleasant and easy to operate; it perfectly reads and interprets presses of varying strengths thanks to the new interface. The screen pleases with rich colors (432 ppi), and the brightness is more than enough for comfortable work in the bright sun. True, the protective film of the screen noticeably glares: whether to leave it or not is at the discretion of the owner.

The eye does not register color distortions when turning in everyday use. The settings have a fairly simple and, at the same time, functional interface for individual screen settings: from design to radiation parameters. In the menu you can not only select the font size and wallpaper from the gallery, from standard options or from the manufacturer, but also set the degree of blur and the presence/absence of background scrolling.

You can confidently trust the “Auto Brightness” function - the smartphone effectively and quickly adapts to the environment. The traditional “Eye Protection Mode”, which reduces the level of UV radiation (for reading texts, for example), is installed if necessary according to a schedule. You can choose a comfortable color temperature not only from three standard ones, but also set it according to color wheel.

Cameras

The main pride of the device is the camera, developed jointly with the legendary Leica - one of the most reputable manufacturers of photographic equipment. In fact, Huawei was at the origins of the dual camera craze. And it would not be an exaggeration to note that the Chinese company can be considered the best in this niche.

Since last year's debutant Huawei P9 (main - 12 + 12 MP, f/2.2; front - 8 MP f/2.4), the manufacturer has gained experience and has already released a new generation camera - Lecia Dual Camera 2.0. (The phablet we talked about earlier also received the same module.) For smartphones, Leika makes expensive aspherical lenses, which are traditionally installed in camera lenses.

The functionality of the new flagship cameras will appeal to both amateurs who are accustomed to relying on automation, and professionals who prefer to set the exposure themselves.

At the top of the frame window there is a line with basic settings: “Flash”, “Selfie effects”, “Film” (regular, faded or bright), “Filters”, changing the camera and, of course, "Wide Aperture Mode"- the main feature of a system of two sensors, which is responsible for simulating the aperture or, more simply, “faking” bokeh. The depth of field is set automatically, but can also be adjusted manually (from f/0.95 to f/16) by clicking on the icon with the working f value that appears in the lower right corner. In addition, 2 cameras allow you to fearlessly use the zoom without fear of getting a noisy, unclear image.

At the bottom there is a “curtain” of the PRO mode - you pull it up and configure the phone’s camera like a professional device: selecting focus, ISO (up to 3,200), shutter speed (from 30 seconds), white balance (with Kelvin scale) and exposure compensation. When switching to this mode, the user automatically gains access to the expanded “Settings” menu (swipe from right to left), where you can even choose to shoot in RAW for subsequent professional processing.

Swiping from left to right opens the “Modes” menu, where the user has a wide choice additional functions- from HDR and b/w to “Delicious food” and “Panorama”, from “Night photography” to scanner and Slow-Mo.

In automatic mode, the camera works flawlessly in 99% of cases: it perfectly adapts to any lighting conditions, producing clear and rich images. Focus is fast and accurate even at the shortest possible distance. The dual LED flash provides soft diffused light and does not turn the picture into an unnatural blue.

It’s difficult to distinguish footage taken on the P10 from professional photos, especially on Instagram. So let's just admire our Spanish photos...

P10 Adventures in Barcelona

The front camera from Leica with a resolution of 8 MP and F / 1.9 is similar in interface to the main one, except that there are fewer functions: the lack of a wide aperture mode compensates for the portrait mode - “Decoration”, pleasantly blurring the backdrop and delicately masking imperfections of the facial skin. It works not only when shooting photos, but also videos. Those who like to click in front of landmarks will appreciate the selfie panorama function. The device is compatible with monopods from other manufacturers - no additional software installation is required.

In the settings there is an interesting “Perfect Selfie” item, which allows you to refine the photo in several parameters: “Smoothing”, “Whitening”, “Big eyes”, “Bright eyes” and “Narrow face”. This set is explained by purely Asian ideas about beauty: smooth light skin, large expressive eyes and a “heart” face. I wonder if Huawei is aware of Western women’s tender love for tanning?..

The P10 can also be proud of its video quality: the main camera records in 4K, and the front camera records in HD. The sound quality is not satisfactory.

OS and interface

New P10 and P10 Plus from Huawei received the latest version Android 7.0 with the latest proprietary shell EMUI 5.1 . The developers decided to get serious about improving the process of RAM management, screen responsiveness and photo processing in background.

It would take a long time to describe all the intricacies of communicating with the new OS, so it’s worth concentrating on the main thing. EMUI 5.1 adopts new Ultra Memory algorithm for faster release random access memory What's more, it tracks user behavior to launch your most frequently used apps faster. The system constantly looks for background energy-consuming applications and strongly advises you to close them. It feels like Kuzya the brownie has taken up residence on the phone and is wailing: “Oh, trouble, trouble, ruin! Inventories have not been measured, losses have not been calculated...”

Ultra Response technology with a new driver helps the smartphone respond to touches even faster. Moreover, the screens of new smartphones from Huawei now support predictive tracking of the user's fingers. The developers even thought through such details as the problem of accidental unlocking of the smartphone: they processed more than 65 of the most frequently used gestures and scenarios to avoid its occurrence as much as possible.

While the phone is in standby mode, the “Gallery” is working hard Highlights function, diligently indexing the owner’s photographs by place and people. They also promise that she will create a video of the best moments. Alas, I have not yet been able to see this with my own eyes.

Judging by first impressions, the EMUI shell seems more thoughtful in many details than standard Android 7.0, although you also need to get used to it. New shell strives to adapt as much as possible to the individual needs of the user - the possibilities for customization are simply enormous. You just need to spend time getting to the bottom of all the subtleties.

The familiar curtain, which comes out when you swipe from top to bottom (with one finger - partially, with two - completely) has enriched its range and, most importantly, allows you to arrange icons to your liking. “Long Screenshot”, “Screen Recording”, “Eye Protection”, Broadcasting (via Mirror Share) and some others appeared on the list. It is now possible to monitor the charge level of connected wireless devices in the status bar. Now notifications are no longer divided into two tabs, but are shown across the entire width of the screen. The interface immediately offers to respond to messages that pop up here. You can view active applications simply by lightly swiping horizontally on the multifunction button.

With each new version of the OS, the contents of the Settings menu become wider and more meticulous in nuances that no one had even thought about before. Choose a regular screen style or with a separate “Apps Screen”, customize the radiation, color temperature, image, theme, background. If there are not enough standard options, look among the endless options of the Themes application from Huawei. Further more - choose the proportions and methods of scrolling desktops...

It is worth noting that the EMUI developers have moved away from their traditional minimalism in design: everything standard options some overly tricky and sophisticated. Finding something simple, concise and comfortable has become difficult.

You can get stuck in “Management” for a long time: here and additional button, a whole set of different control gestures, special modes for a case, work with gloves, one-handed operation. Here you can select the “smart” mode for a standard headset. A separate item in the menu teaches you how to use the multifunction sensor, and also allows you to install regular on-screen buttons. On the display in standard mode The pedometer is now displayed.

In the “Management” menu, you can register your Huawei account, which will give you access to improved service and protection. There is no mess of pre-installed applications on the desktop - only the most necessary: basic programs from Google and several proprietary ones from Huawei.

Of particular note are the convenient “Phone Manager” (comprehensively optimizes the operation of the device), the HiGame toy service, the “Health” fitness application and the HiCare service center. The only thing that confuses us about the latter is the absence of Russia in the list of countries where the program operates.

The new Android 7.0 Nougat is currently available on less than 5% of devices, so many application developers have not yet had time to adapt programs for it. Some applications are buggy or refuse to work at all, especially not very popular ones. Several of our standard system tests failed on this phone.

Fingerprint sensor

This time, Huawei decided to take an example from Meizu and install a fingerprint scanner on the front panel, and the haptic feedback function allowed it to be combined with a control button. More precisely, it’s difficult to call this sensor a button - it’s more like a control “hole”.

At first, “pressing” this oval depression under the screen is somewhat strange - without the usual tactile sensations. But then you get used to it. The fingerprint sensor reacts with lightning speed: raise your finger and the display lights up. Light press - back, strong (until vibration) - home, swipe - list open applications. The sensor can not only be responsible for unlocking the entire device, but also selectively protect individual applications from the encroachments of strangers.

Iron

The P10 is equipped with a 14nm HiSilicon Kirin 960 processor, independently developed by Huawei, a Mali G71 MP8 video chip and 4 GB of RAM. Volume internal storage- 64 GB (with maximum possible expansion up to 256 GB via microSD).

Alas, new flagship still didn’t get the Kirin 970, but a slight increase in performance is still observed here: compared to the same processor used in last year’s Mate 9, the Cortex-A73 cores began to run 0.1 GHz faster.

Despite the fact that recently the flagship amount of RAM is considered to be 6 GB (and devices with 8 GB are already appearing), Huawei COO Lao Shi said that 4 GB of 2017 smartphones will be enough for smooth operation.

Purely externally, the P10 does not look like a gaming device with its elegant forms and small screen, however, if necessary, it adequately pulls out resource-intensive toys. He reacted calmly to a couple of dozen simultaneously running applications of varying degrees of severity.
The results of the most popular Antutu benchmark are decent. (We tried out the “long screenshot” for the occasion.)

Testing the system for strength, we launched over those twenty background applications one of the heaviest mobile toys, Asphalt 8. It started without any problems, but I couldn’t play for a long time - very soon the phone began to hint that it was preparing to burn the “tormentor’s” hands.

P10 completed the race with dignity and only then allowed himself to hang. Even when all applications were closed and processes were optimized, the “glitch” did not disappear - the phone stopped opening the “Gallery”. It returned to normal only after the second reboot... When it finally cooled down. The experimentally determined critical temperature of “dullness” is from 71°C.

The prospective owner of a smartphone equipped with one of the best mobile cameras will most likely prefer graphic applications and social networks, and for this purpose the device’s data is more than enough. However, we have not forgotten about augmented reality lovers and launched Pokemon Go - in our opinion, the game that is most adequate to the “abilities” of a smartphone.

The first test version of the new operating system Android P Developer Preview 1.

According to company representatives, basically all work with new version Android has been aimed at optimizing the performance and overall stability, as well as the security of the operating system. But there were also new useful features.

We'll tell you what interesting things engineers from California came up with.

1. The clock has been moved to the left

Standard current time numbers have moved to the upper left corner. You need to get used to this.

2. New volume control design

The volume control is now located on the right side and drawn vertically.

It consists of two separate elements. The first is the volume slider, which allows you to quickly mute all media sounds, as well as control the volume of any connected device. The second is the call mode window, which allows you to turn the sound on/off.

3. An easy way to take and edit a screenshot

When you press the shutdown button, a new option “take a screenshot” appears in the menu, which can be edited right away. There is a built-in editor for this. Who said iOS?

4. Convenient image rotation mode

One of the cool new features is the smart rotation mode.

If the user disables automatic rotation display when rotating, then if the smartphone is tilted horizontally, a rotation icon will appear on the navigation panel.

When you click on it, the device will switch to the corresponding display mode. Otherwise, the icon will disappear after a couple of seconds. Comfortable.

4. Always-on displays charge

Always-on displays show battery percentage at the bottom center of the screen.

5. The design has become more rounded

Left Android P, right Android Oreo

Familiar windows have a more pleasant appearance thanks to rounded corners. Looks elegant.

6. Settings became bright and playful

The icons in the settings menu have become colored. Now everything is not so strict, but more festive. Moreover, the colors of each settings block are chosen quite logically. Network settings - blue, battery menu - green. We saw this somewhere.

In the quick settings menu, the list of icons now scrolls vertically instead of horizontally.

7. “Unibrow” support is now at the system level

Last week, the MWC 2018 exhibition demonstrated a new sad trend among manufacturers - to produce smartphones with a design similar to the iPhone X. That is, with a unibrow.

Android P provides screen customization specifically for such smartphones. It allows you to adjust the cutout to a specific size of the platform with cameras on the display.

8. Support Wi-Fi RTT technology

Android P can tell you the distance to WiFi points. In other words, the system will show the location of Wi-Fi routers indoors with an accuracy of 1-2 meters.

A convenient feature that will allow you to sit closer to the router in a cafe.

9. Safety first

Entered upon unlocking graphic key disappears as you draw it. Thus, the risk of snooping on such a password is reduced.

Android P also began to limit access to microphones, cameras and phone sensors third party applications running in the background.

In addition, it is stated:

  • Habitual (for iPhone users) zoom text when editing
  • Supports HDR VP9 video and HEIF image compression
  • The API responsible for the operation of dual cameras - smooth zooming and bokeh effect, which is currently not possible to test.
  • New APIs for working with machine learning

The next DP will be released in May, and the final build will not be available until the third quarter of 2018.

The build quality of the case is impeccable, and when you try to twist and squeeze, the case bends only slightly and does not make any sounds. Such high torsional rigidity of the case is ensured by a durable aluminum alloy frame. The back surface is glossy, which is not particularly disturbing in the case of the iridescent blue-violet version. But we were given a black version for testing, which instantly collects a variety of prints. But, what’s remarkable is that the gloss is not particularly scratch-resistant, and it’s quite easy to wipe off your fingers.

On the front side in the upper cutout of the screen there is a pair of front cameras, proximity and light sensors, as well as a tiny earpiece.

From the rear you can see a block of two cameras and a flash, as well as a fingerprint reading sensor.

On the left side surface there is a tray for installing a pair of SIM cards in nanoSIM format, one of which can be replaced with microSD media. On the right are the lock and volume control keys.

Only the microphone is visible on the back end. The bottom end is a little more loaded. There is a system speaker, a microUSB connector, a second microphone and a standard analog audio connector.

Display

In terms of dimensions, the smartphone is comparable to 5.7...6-inch models, but its screen diagonal is 6.3 inches. It's all about the non-standard aspect ratio, which has become even closer to the cinematic one and is 19.5:9, and the resolution is 1080 * 2340 pixels. It is worth noting that the indicated screen resolution is the maximum for the system-on-chip used. Unlike the usual non-plus screen, the screen of the tested smartphone has rounded corners, and there is also a cutout. The “unibrow” can be hidden if necessary. The display has an oleophobic coating and supports up to 10 simultaneous touches. In general, there is full set modern functions and features.

The screen brightness in standard mode is 341.42 cd/m2, and in “bright” mode - 412.08 cd/m2. The difference, frankly, is quite impressive. But when high brightness It is worth taking into account not only increased battery consumption, but also significant color distortion, as well as a very serious increase in color temperature. In addition, when the “Bright” mode is activated, the contrast drops slightly - 937:1 versus 995:1 in standard mode

As for the accuracy of color display, in normal mode there is nothing to complain about - the gamma is close to the standard, the color temperature by smartphone standards is not too high, the delta E color deviation on the gray wedge does not exceed 10.1, and on the primary colors (RGBCMY) – no more than 7.0, which is an excellent result for a mid-budget smartphone. In the “Vivid” mode, the Delta E deviation on the gray wedge reaches a value of 23.1, and on the primary colors the maximum deviation is 10.8. The color temperature, depending on the lightness of the hue, is in the range of 8550...9750 K. Of course, here you can remember about the ability to adjust the color temperature, but the controls are not very convenient, so using them to achieve correct color display is quite difficult. In addition, when manually lowering the color temperature, the brightness decreases in parallel, which is the only advantage of the “Bright” mode.

Sound

The decorative grille of the speaker is not very different in size from the camera eyes, and the speaker itself is small. But, nevertheless, it copes with its function perfectly - the volume is sufficient in almost all typical conditions of use, and no defects were identified during testing. U system dynamics no pronounced defects were noticed either, but its overall sound quality is very mediocre - frequency range quite narrow, and not only is there not enough low end, but also high frequencies. In addition, the speaker volume level is low. When playing a sinusoidal signal with a frequency of 1 kHz at a distance of 1 meter from the smartphone, a value of 70.1 dBA was recorded. In our database of results, the test one turned out to be one of the quietest smartphones, while the one we recently tested showed one of the best results. It seems as if Huawei deliberately made the speaker simpler and quieter in order to reduce the attractiveness of the smartphone, which is a potential threat to both the older models of the Y line and the younger model of the P20 line.

Unfortunately, the situation is no better, if not worse, on the analog audio output. When playing the test signal and operating with a 32 Ohm load, a level of only 99.9 mV was recorded, and when using a 16 Ohm load - 79.2 mV. Most likely, this is a feature of a specific sample, and not the model as a whole, because values less than 150 mV (with a load of 32 Ohms) are extremely rare. Often this indicates a defect or a feature of the pre-sale sample, or rather the firmware. In any case, if you like this smartphone, then the volume in the headphones should be assessed first.

Performance

Huawei P Smart Plus became the first smartphone based on the new HiSilicon Kirin 710 system-on-chip, which aims to compete with Qualcomm Snapdragon 636/660. This SoC is made using the 12 nm FinFET process technology and is equipped with 8 cores – 4 Cortex-A73 with a frequency of up to 2.2 GHz and 4 Cortex-A53 with a frequency of up to 1.7 GHz. The video subsystem is based on the Mali-G51 MP2. The amount of RAM is quite standard for a mid-budget solution, and is 4 GB (for the SoC used maximum volume RAM is 6 GB).

It was not possible to fully test the system in popular benchmarks. When trying to install Antutu, Geekbench and PCMark, a syntax error was thrown. Moreover, the error is widespread and well-studied - 501. But all known methods for eliminating it did not work. It is noteworthy that any other software, including little-known test packages, installs absolutely smoothly and without problems. Probably in press test samples this feature was intentionally included by the manufacturer.

I was able to install Androbench without any problems. The CPU Throttling Test was also installed without any problems, which showed an average performance of 112,181 GIPS during the stress test, as well as some problems with overheating and throttling under prolonged high loads. Not without problems, but we still managed to launch the 3Dmark package, in which HiSilicon Kirin 710 demonstrated performance at the level of Qualcomm Snapdragon 636. In popular JavaScript tests, HiSilicon Kirin 710 is slightly ahead of its main competitor.

According to information from the network, in Antutu 7 the tested smartphone scores about 138 thousand points, and in Geekbench – 1601 points in single-core mode and 5457 in multi-core mode, which is comparable to the results of testing Qualcomm Snapdragon 636/660.

Camera

The smartphone is formally equipped with 4 cameras at once - two each from the front and rear. But in fact, only one module is used, and a pair of 2 MP sensors are installed only as auxiliary sensors to ensure the background blur function works. Considering the price of a smartphone, what can you expect from it? high-quality photos it was difficult, but Huawei P Smart Plus was able to pleasantly surprise. Moreover, I was pleased not only with the main camera, but also with the front camera.

The front camera is based on a sensor with a resolution of 24 megapixels. The lens aperture is not impressive, but standard for its class - f/2.0. Automation accurately sets the exposure, the detail of the images is high, and the colors are reproduced accurately. The front camera shoots well not only in good lighting, but also in low artificial lighting. The background blur function works, but not as well as, for example, in ASUS smartphones. Moreover, the problem is not even with the quality of the blur, because it really looks like bokeh, but with determining the boundaries of the subject. But in general, the results of the function are very interesting.

The subject does not have a front flash, so in the absence of lighting, a screen with a white fill is used to illuminate the subject being photographed. The power of the light flux is low, so the automation uses high sensitivity values and active software noise reduction (read: blurring).

daylight natural light, background blur

artificial lighting, 30 luxdisplay lighting in flash mode

The main camera is based on a 16 megapixel sensor. The lens aperture is only f/2.2. The rear camera can blur the background, but, as in the case of the front camera, the boundaries of the photographed object are not determined in the best way.

no blur with blur

The smartphone manufacturer is actively focusing on AI (artificial intelligence), which can be activated when shooting. But in practice, all the power of AI comes down to increasing the brightness and saturation of colors. Particularly active this function works when shooting landscapes. But the AI doesn’t yet have a sense of proportion – the color of greenery and the sky turns out to be overly saturated and far from reality. The activity of this function cannot be adjusted. In general, from a subjective point of view, AI is still damp.

AI activated AI disabled

But here the tested smartphone has a trump card, or rather an ace up its sleeve - the ability to shoot in RAW from standard application. Thanks to this function you can adjust the saturation certain colors and play with exposure compensation in the RAW development program. Of course, this will have to be done manually and take time, but the result will be better than with AI.

If you don’t pay attention to the newfangled functions, then overall the camera works great for its price class. Automation correctly sets the exposure even in the most difficult situations (for example, when shooting with the sun in the frame), does not distort colors in bright daylight, which is typical of competitors (for example,), and the detail of the images is pleasantly pleasing.

The camera settings provide the ability to select exposure metering mode, sensitivity level, shutter speed, focus operating mode, set white balance, as well as introduce exposure compensation.

To evaluate image quality, a test pattern was shot using the rear camera with a sensitivity of ISO100-3200 in 1 EV increments. Test shots saved in JPEG and RAW formats, followed by conversion to JPEG with minimal compression.

Shooting in RAW

Shooting in JPEG

Also, thanks to the possibility of shooting in RAW, a graph of the dependence of the brightness noise level on the sensitivity level was built. He was taken as an opponent. As can be seen in the graph, despite the general high quality photo, in terms of noise level, the tested smartphone is still noticeably inferior to its more expensive opponent.

Illumination 50 luxIllumination 50 lux + flashIllumination 3 lux + flash

Flash

When measured at a distance of 1 meter from the smartphone, the built-in flash based on 1 LED provides illumination at 30.4 lux, which is an average value.

Video recording

In video mode, the smartphone is capable of recording videos with a resolution of no more than 1920*1080 pixels, but in 60p mode, which is a good bonus for a mid-budget smartphone. Unfortunately, the sample provided for testing flatly refused to focus, so it was not possible to provide an example video. It's worth noting that this feature is clearly a problem with the specific image, not the model.

Autonomous operation

The smartphone is equipped with a battery with a capacity of 3340 mAh. In reading mode, the smartphone lasted 891 minutes, in FullHD video viewing mode – 676 minutes, and 277 minutes in game mode.

Complete Charger was not provided for testing, so it was used third party charging with configuration 5V/2.5A, 9V/2A, 12V/1.5A.

Conclusion

Externally, the smartphone is extremely similar to the representative of the flagship P20 line. At the same time, the test subject is significantly ahead of the younger model of this line in terms of performance. It is worth noting here that the home-grown SoC Kirin 710 turned out to be very successful, and it easily competes with Snapdragon 636 and 660.

Despite some shortcomings, in general, Huawei has turned out to be an excellent mid-budget smartphone, which can even be forgiven for the microUSB connector (if using USB Type-C, the tested smartphone would have greatly hindered sales of older models). And in general, it could be safely recommended for purchase, but only if it had an NFC module, without which any smartphone now loses its attractiveness. Of the strong competitors, it is worth noting, which has NFC and a larger battery capacity, but Huawei P Smart Plus has a more interesting design and much better cameras.
Minuses:
— low power of the system speaker;
— sound quality of the system speaker;
low level signal on analog audio output;
— 5 GHz Wi-Fi band is not supported;
- no NFC;
— microUSB connector;
Pros:
— design (subjective);
— build quality and torsional rigidity of the case;
high quality display;
high performance;
— generally high-quality cameras (for their price class);
— the ability to shoot in RAW in the standard camera control program;
- price.

Positioning

Not long ago, we published a detailed review of the Huawei P20 Pro, the flagship smartphone, on our website. Chinese company. The main emphasis in this model was on cameras, since for the first time in the mobile industry a device with three main cameras went on mass sale.

Today we will talk about the P20, a simplified version of the older P20 Pro model. In short, the mini-flagship lost two stereo speakers, IP67 protection and an additional third camera. The difference in price was exactly 10,000 rubles, that is, Huawei P20 is sold for 45,000 rubles.

The new Huawei P20 will appeal to those who choose a top-end Android device with a high-quality dual camera and relatively compact dimensions.

Design, dimensions, control elements

In previous reviews of Huawei devices, I already said that the smartphones are very similar to each other: the Honor 10, the Huawei P20, and the Huawei P20 Lite have the same design. Yes, there are differences, of course, but they are minimal.

From the front side, the phone looks typical of almost any Android device. On the reverse side, it is somewhat reminiscent of the Apple iPhone X in a dark color: the glass surface, the location of the cameras, the shape of the body and the smoothed corners around the perimeter. By the way, tactile sensations are the same.

There are three colors for the P20: black, blue and pink. I prefer the blue device, since there are not many bright colors on our market. Black is unisex, and pink is closer to the weaker half of humanity.

Dimensions of Huawei P20 are 149x70x7.65 mm and weight 165 grams. If we compare it with the P20 Pro, it has dimensions of 155x73x7.8 mm and a weight of 180 grams. The second one feels more bulky. This is due not only to increased weight, but also to shape back cover: It is more sloping and gives the impression that the body is thick. And in the “twenty” the panel is flat.

In general, the Huawei P20 is much more convenient to use than the P20 Pro and even the Apple iPhone X – that one is also somewhat plump and massive.

The front and back sides are glass, the frame is made of metal. In a couple of weeks I managed to “land” the P20 Pro deep scratch, although I used the phone extremely carefully. I think the same consideration will be given to the younger version of the case. The transition from glass on the front plane to the metal side is smooth, making swipe actions pleasant.

There is an oleophobic coating, the quality is good: the finger glides easily, fingerprints can be removed without difficulty. On the reverse side, the “oleophobic” is of low quality: fingerprints are visible better, and are difficult to remove. The case feels a little slippery in the hand. As always, everything is decided by installing a cover or bumper. As far as I know, for the new P series there was released a large number of accessories.

As in the case of the P20 Pro, in the upper part (in the “monobrow”) there was an indicator of missed events (a small LED), light and proximity sensors, a camera and a speaker. It is very loud, bassy, and the interlocutor can be heard clearly and intelligibly.

Huawei decided to install an elongated fingerprint scanner under the display. Recognition accuracy is high. By the way, the scanner works even if your hands are wet. As a last resort, there is face recognition (from 20 to 150 cm). It works faster than the iPhone X, but it can't see you in the dark.

At the bottom there are: microphone, USB Type-C and speaker speakerphone. Unfortunately, unlike the P20 Pro, there is no pairing of two speakers for stereo sound.

The power button with a red insert and the volume rocker key (metal, thin) are on the right, and on the left there are slides (with a rubber seal) for two nano SIM cards. There is a second microphone at the top end. The older model still has an IR transmitter.

On the back side on the left there is a module with two lenses. It protrudes above the body by a couple of millimeters. Just below is a laser focusing system and a dual LED flash in two tones.

Display

I won’t belabor the point and will only say that here again a screen with a cutout in the upper part is used – “unibrow”, “bang”, “notch” - call it what you want. Here, just like in the P20 Pro and P20 Lite, the curvature of the screen matrix is uneven: there is one radius on top, and another on the bottom.

The Huawei P20 display diagonal is 5.8 inches, resolution 2240x1080 pixels (FullHD+), LTPS IPS LCD matrix, aspect ratio 19:9.

White brightness 415 cd/m2, black brightness 0.32 cd/m2, contrast ratio 1235:1. The viewing angles are maximum, the display behaves perfectly in the light - the information is readable.

The brightness graph is normal, gamma is within normal limits, color levels are high of blue color, the temperature drops slightly depending on the brightness, the data exceeds the sRGB triangle (saturated colors), all points are located outside the radius Delta E=10 – grey colour will be unnatural.

In the screen settings there is an item “Color and vision protection”. You can turn on “Natural” in it: it is an analogue of Apple “ True tone" On the Huawei P20 Pro, I actively use it, since the screen really precisely adjusts to the ambient light temperature. This feature works even better on iPhone X.

If desired, you can turn the controller on and off - this is the name of the cutout at the top of the screen. There is a choice of display resolution: auto, HD+ or FullHD+.

Overall: a bright and contrasting display with rich colors, but with average calibration of the matrix as a whole. Huawei developers could more accurately adjust the temperature and gray color; after all, the flagship costs a lot.

Working hours

Here it is used lithium polymer battery capacity 3400 mAh. Let me remind you that the Huawei P20 Pro has a 4000 mAh battery, and the P20 Lite has a 3000 mAh battery.

Considering that the P20 uses an IPS matrix, video playback time is short: 8 – 9 hours per maximum brightness. Games drain the battery in about 5 hours, playing YouTube videos - about 7 hours.

On average, you can get 1.5 days out of the device with 4.5 – 5 hours of screen light. I can't say what it is excellent result, but no worse than the average semi-flagship on Android OS. From Huawei P20 Pro I received two days of work and up to 6-7 hours of screen light.

The Huawei P20 smartphone supports fast charging with the proprietary name Super Charge. In 30 minutes the battery is charged to 65%, and 100% full in 1 hour 10 minutes.

Communication capabilities

In this section, in general, everything is traditional: the smartphone is equipped with two SIM cards, there is support for LTE CAT 18/13 (1 - 9, 12, 17 - 20, 26, 28). During use there were no problems.

Despite the presence of NFC, the Huawei P20 does not support Mifare Classic and Ultralight. And this is really strange, since the older model works with Troika cards without much difficulty.

Available Wi-Fi b/g/n/ac with two bands, Bluetooth version 4.2 (A2DP, LE, EDR, aptX/aptX HD). This is where it’s a shame: the Bluetooth version is only 4.2, while competitors have had “five” for a long time. USB with 3.1 GEN 1 support.

For navigation there are GPS, GLONASS and BDS. Sensitivity is average (detects up to 25 satellites and uses only about 16-18), accuracy is average (up to 6 meters).

Cameras

The younger version of the flagship device has only two main cameras: a 12 MP color sensor and a 20 MP monochrome sensor. Optical stabilization did not “start”, which is extremely unpleasant, considering both the positioning and cost of the device.

Let me remind you that the Huawei P20 Pro has three cameras: color, monochrome and 3X zoom with an optical stabilizer.

A little more about the camera modules in Huawei P20:

  • Main color, 12 MP (Sony IMX378), sensor size 1/2.3 inches, pixel size 1.55 microns, f/1.8 aperture, focal length 27 mm
  • Additional monochrome, 20 MP, 1 micron pixel size, f/1.6 aperture, 27 mm focal length
  • Front 24 MP, f/2.0 aperture.

I will describe the quality of P20 cameras from the point of view Meizu comparisons 15 Plus (since it was on test at the time of writing the P20 review) and Huawei P20 Pro.

I would put the photo from the Huawei P20 Pro in first place: the sharpness is higher, there are no artifacts, there is no noise, the colors are accurate. In second place is Meizu 15 Plus: sharpness is good (sometimes better than P20 Pro), colors are more or less accurate. In third place is Huawei P20: for some reason, all the photos are a little not sharp, the colors fade into warm shades, but the dynamic range is wider than that of the P20 Pro.

Separately tested Huawei P20, Apple iPhone X and Huawei P20 Pro in low lighting conditions.

Here again, Huawei P20 Pro comes first: almost no noise, almost no artifacts, the picture is quite sharp, details are preserved; even in the most “evil” conditions (photo of the primer), the device produced a bright picture. In second place is the Apple iPhone X: it has accurate white balance, good detail, but a lot of noise. Third place for Huawei P20: quite a lot of “soap”, the picture is brighter than the iPhone X, but less details are preserved.

There are no questions about the front camera - it takes pictures very well. Video – HD 30 frames per second.

The device records video in maximum resolution 4K (AVC codec, 40 Mbit/s, 30 fps), stereo sound(AAC, 2 channels, 48 kHz, 192 Kbps). The quality is excellent due to the wide dynamic range: the videos appear as if they have an HDR effect. As for the slow-motion video (which for some reason was hidden in the “More” item), it is recorded at 960 frames per second in a resolution of 1280x720 pixels.

You can read more about artificial intelligence in the camera in the Huawei P20 Pro review, link below.

Overall: it seemed to me that Huawei cameras The P20 Pro and Apple iPhone X take better pictures than the P20 - it lacks detail; The dynamic range is slightly wider than the P20 Pro. I probably didn't have the best test sample.

The camera interface is somewhat overloaded, in my opinion. “Aperture”, “Night”, “Portrait”, “Photo”, “Video”, “Pro” and a seductive “More” item appeared in the bottom panel. The latter added something that no longer fit anywhere, including slow-motion video at 960 fps.

Sample photos

Memory, chipset and performance

This device uses 4 GB of LPDDR4 RAM, which operates at a speed of 7600 Mbit/s - a very high result! Huawei P20 Pro has exactly the same one. The internal memory here is 128 GB UFS 2.1 without expandability. Read speed 500 Mbps, write speed 200 Mbps.

The processor is exactly the same as in the Huawei P20 Pro – HiSilicon Kirin 970. To find out all its capabilities, follow the link below. There are also software chips.

Multimedia

Unlike the older model, the Huawei P20 is equipped with only one speaker for hands-free calling. The volume is above average, the quality is good, the sound is clear and clear.

I checked the sound quality in the headphones using standard ones with a USB-C connector, using an adapter - Meizu Flow and Bose QC35.

  • Regular ones. I wouldn't call the volume high low frequencies shallow, high frequencies are quite enough, but you can’t improve them with an equalizer. 3.5 out of 5
  • Meizu Flow. The volume is higher, the sound insulation is better. Pleasant low frequencies (at the level of 60-80 Hz), high ones are a little “high”. But with the mids, everything is somehow not very good; the situation is difficult to correct with the equalizer. 4.5 out of 5
  • Bose QC35. The volume is lower than Meizu Flow. Deep frequencies can be heard, but weakly; high and mid frequencies are fine; I liked the detail of the sound. 4.5 out of 5

Of course, there is support for atpX and aptXHD.

Huawei has a very large influence in the smartphone market. This is a leading corporation in sales, whose main consumers live in China. But its products are widely known throughout the world.

Huawei makes both budget and flagship devices. Today we will make a description of Huawei P20 Lite. The model was included in the mid-budget price segment. The parameters of the Huawei P20 Lite smartphone are very close to the flagship ones - frameless screen, dual camera. Let's review the Huawei P20 Lite and see how the device is inferior to devices with a more expensive price tag.

The Huawei P20 Lite has specifications that are consistent with its price tag. Good processor, high-quality screen and good camera They can outshine even some of the flagships of competing companies.

Equipment

Quite often, in the box with a new phone you can only find a charger and an instruction manual. All other important accessories for using the device must be purchased separately. But in the case of Huawei P20 Light, we get, so to speak, an expanded set, namely:

  • The smartphone itself;
  • Charger;
  • Headphones;
  • Needle for SIM card tray.

Design

We'll start the review with the design. The smartphone has dimensions of 148.6×71.2×7.4 mm. These parameters allow you to use the gadget with one hand. The device weighs 145 grams. Considering the size of the device, we can say that this is small. You can find heavier smartphones with the same dimensions.

The fingerprint scanner is located on the back, which looks quite nice, but in terms of convenience it can be controversial. Some users prefer the fingerprint sensor to be on the front panel.

The downside to the design is the protruding main camera. Because of this position, it will get scratched every time if you place the phone with the back panel on the table. This forces you to buy cases that will make the camera not stick out so much.

On the right side of the phone there is a power button and a volume rocker. The audio jack is located on the bottom end. An undoubted advantage is its presence. For the sake of subtlety, many manufacturers, and many others, often neglect it. But many users often miss it. Nearby is a USB-C connector. Nowadays this is already the norm, but micro-USB can often be found in “state sector” devices.

The body is made of metal and glass. Only the frames in the case are metal, the front and back panels are glass. It looks very nice, but such a smartphone will not survive a fall on the asphalt. It is recommended to immediately put a case on your phone.

The front panel deserves special attention. The device is considered frameless. They are very thin here. This feature allows the screen to occupy 80.5% of the front panel.

The appearance of the device is quite attractive. It is compared to the Apple iPhone X. The Huawei P20 Lite Midnight Black smartphone has a very strict and brutal appearance. This color is more suitable for men. If you like brighter, softer colors, there's Blue Ultramarine. For girls there is a pink option. In terms of appearance, the device is very beautiful, and you can’t argue with that.

The most significant drawback in the appearance of the device was the unibrow - a protrusion for the front camera, earpiece and light sensor. And it’s not even that it looks ugly; the applications are not optimized for it. If you exit full screen mode, the top frame will be large, and if you use full screen mode, there will be bugs.

Display

One of the advantages of this model is the large display. It has the same quality as many flagship devices. Its diagonal is 5.84 inches with an aspect ratio of 19:9. The screen is slightly extended upward, which has a positive effect on the ergonomics of the phone.

The resolution of the FullHD+ screen (2280×1080) is already standard for 2018. This doesn't put a lot of load on the processor, and it doesn't eat up a lot of charge. If you have problems with resolution, you can switch to HD+. This is necessary when there is a need to save battery power, or when there are lags in games. You can enable intelligent resolution switching, which will automatically adjust the number of pixels on the screen depending on the charge in the smartphone.

Out of the box, the screen is set to cool tones. But this will not be a problem, since it is possible to flexibly customize the display. You can change the temperature, contrast and more.

Well, it’s also worth saying about viewing angles. The display is very good, but there is still some distortion when tilted too far. But this is typical for any device.

Cameras

In terms of cameras, Huawei smartphones always surprise. Of course, you definitely shouldn’t expect any miracles from a mid-budget device, but the device will definitely please you with its good photo quality.

Let's start with the fact that the main camera consists of two modules - 16 and 2 megapixels. This is not so much when compared with other Huawei devices, but this optics still outperforms the devices of competing companies.

The dual camera is a must-have for bokeh photography. This mode is not implemented very well. In some cases, you can achieve a normal result, but generally the picture is too blurry, which spoils it.

Many users believe that the second 2 MP camera does not provide anything other than a bokeh effect, but this is not true. The second camera module is monochrome, it slightly increases the color quality. The camera has an f/2.2 aperture. This aperture allows you to do good photos in poor lighting. But there is another side to the coin - in strong lighting, the photo can be overexposed.

The front camera has a resolution of 16 MP. This is a lot even for some flagships, because in terms of the front-end, everything here is very competent. Aperture f/2.0. Almost no different from the aperture of the main camera, except that it’s a little worse for low-light photos.

Communications

Let's continue our review of the Huawei P20 Lite phone communication capabilities. This device has some interesting features, which users will clearly like.

U of this smartphone A Wi-Fi module capable of receiving a frequency of 5 GHz is installed. This allows the device to work with 2, 3 and 4G. The device also has Bluetooth 4.2. This version is different high speed data acceptance, so the speed and quality of synchronization with a wireless headset is guaranteed.

I would also like to say something about NFC. This is a very useful feature that allows you to make payments conveniently. To pay for a product or service, you just need to bring the device to the terminal at a distance of a few centimeters.

The quality of conversations is affected by sound. The main speaker here is not of very high quality, so problems may arise when talking on speakerphone. But everything is fine with sound recording. The device has 2 microphones. The main microphone for recording is located on the bottom edge, and on the top edge there is an additional microphone for noise suppression.

A few words about SIM cards. There are 2 of them. Since the slot is hybrid, you can put a micro-SD card in it instead of a second SIM card.

Battery life and performance

First, let's talk a little about time battery life of this device. The gadget has a 3000 mAh battery. In terms of screen size and quality, it's very little. But there are a few facts to consider:

  1. The device has the ability to switch quality from FullHD+ to HD+.
  2. The company makes good processors that have a positive effect on battery life.

100% battery lasts for 7 hours of video, 5 hours of games, 4 hours of screen light.

In terms of performance, the device is very good. It has a Kirin 659 processor with 8 cores. The active quartet of cores operates at a frequency of 2.36 GHz, and the energy-efficient one operates at a frequency of 1.7 GHz. This allows the device to be powerful, but not waste a lot of charge in light applications.

In terms of gaming, the smartphone is fast, but sometimes you need to switch the screen quality to HD+ to get maximum performance.

The amount of RAM also affects performance. The smartphone in question has 4 GB of RAM, which is quite sufficient by 2018 standards.

There is 64 GB of permanent memory, but it can be expanded using micro-SD if necessary.

operating system

Operating system - important aspect on a smartphone. It affects performance no less than hardware. That’s why it’s worth talking about this in detail.

This Huawei Lite runs on Android 8.0, which is the best currently available. In addition, there is its own EMUI 8.0 shell. It is very different from the “naked” Android in its interface. In addition, some functions have been changed. Therefore, if you have never used Huawei smartphones, you will have to get used to the changes.

In terms of performance, the software shows good results, but still there is one minus. This is due to the Kirin processor. The fact is that Google configured Android 8 for own developments, which are equipped with a processor from Qualcomm. Of course, Huawei has improved the situation a little with its shell, but some echoes of this problem may reach you. If you see stuttering in games or in the interface, then know that this is not due to the processor, but due to poor optimization.

Why is he interesting?

At this point it is worth summarizing everything we said above and choosing the most interesting. Firstly, the device has very high communication standards, which clearly has a positive effect on the ease of use. Secondly, there is an NFC module - a convenient “thing” in the modern world.

I would like to say a few more words about the scanners that are provided to unlock the device. To begin with, I would like to highlight the fast fingerprint scanner. Of course, now this will not surprise anyone, since fingerprint sensors are available even in cheap Chinese devices third echelon. True, its location is controversial: some people find it convenient to have it in the back, while others prefer the front position. In this gadget, the fingerprint scanner is placed centrally on the back panel. The smartphone has a face scanner, which adds to its resemblance to the iPhone X. The face scan works through a selfie camera, that is, through a photo. The downside is that the technology does not work in poor lighting, but the “trick” is cool.

Well, a few words about the appearance. He is very handsome and stylish. The device is available in several colors, namely: black, blue and pink. There are other colors, but they are not available in Russia.

Price

After detailed analysis The device is worth talking a little about its cost. The smartphone is sold at a price that is very attractive, namely 25 thousand rubles. For this money we get a very high-quality screen, which is similar to the flagship options, powerful specifications and very good firmware.

This device has many positive features that make its cost justified. Even underestimated when compared with Samsung or Apple products.

Bottom line

For a price tag of 25 thousand rubles we get a very high-quality smartphone. But it is not suitable for everyone.

The device turned out to be very specific. Yes, this device is not a flagship, but it looks good compared to them. The fact is that today there are simply no applications that will use all the resources of top-end smartphones, and overpaying for the characteristics of a flagship is simply stupid. The hardware that the P20 Lite has is more than enough to satisfy the user's needs. Therefore, this phone is suitable for those who want to buy a flagship, but are not ready to pay 40, 50 or more thousand rubles for it.

If you belong to the category of ordinary users who just need to make a few calls, surf social networks and watch a movie online, then you don’t need this model. The market is full of ordinary budget options that will satisfy your needs. If you do not need a heavy-duty device, then you can find devices that will cost tens of thousands of rubles less.

As we have already said, the smartphone is very specific and is clearly not suitable for everyone. If we talk about whether the device is worth the money, then yes, and reviews of the Huawei P20 Lite confirm this.
