KOMPAS-3D capabilities for mechanical engineering and instrument making

The design of machine-building and instrument-making products imposes high demands on the tools used. KOMPAS-3D meets the most modern requirements. The system's capabilities ensure the design of mechanical engineering products of any complexity and in accordance with the most advanced design methods. The system contains tools for working using the “top-down” or top-down design method, as well as using the already familiar “bottom-up” method.

Classic solid modeling

KOMPAS-3D allows you to work on various parts and assemblies using solid modeling, which is perfect for designing various shafts, bushings, brackets and housings of various configurations. The basic commands here are extrusion and rotation operations.

Creating sheet metal parts and shells

For mechanical engineering and instrument making, a typical task is the design and subsequent production of sheet metal products. KOMPAS-3D contains a rich toolkit for designing such parts, allowing you to create the most complex structures from sheet metal, followed by automatic development of the designed parts. When designing sheet metal parts and shells, it will be easy to create parts using:

  • shells,
  • folds,
  • cutting,
  • cutouts,
  • elements of open and closed stamping,
  • blinds and collars.

Design with complex surfaces

When designing parts with complex geometry, the surface modeling functionality will be useful. Similar problems are encountered when designing blades and when designing instrument bodies that are made of plastic. The use of surface modeling will make it possible to obtain parts of various shapes and thereby meet the requirements put forward for these products - be it streamlining or ergonomics. There are many options for constructing complex surfaces:

  • by squeezing out
  • rotation,
  • kinematic operation,
  • by sections,
  • by points,
  • along a layer of points,
  • along a network of curves.

Formation of an electronic model of products

When designing in KOMPAS-3D, you receive an electronic model that may contain the data necessary for the manufacture and subsequent life stages of your product. A model created in KOMPAS-3D can already contain:

  • properties and name of the material,
  • dimensions taking into account tolerance,
  • technical requirements,
  • roughness,
  • form tolerances,
  • base designation,
  • designation of places of branding and marking.

Moreover, you can receive documentation for such a product automatically. The specification is generated based on the 3D model of the assembly unit, and the creation of drawings will consist of placing associative views from the 3D model on the drawing format.

Easy to learn and use

The system has a simple and intuitive interface that allows you to quickly master the functionality and get to work. To make the first steps of working in the system easier, KOMPAS-3D contains interactive lessons for learning the basic tools, which are collected in the “ABC KOMPAS-3D”. This ABC will help you understand the capabilities of KOMPAS-3D using ready-made examples and begin solving work problems in the shortest possible time. "ABC KOMPAS-3D" contains examples.

There are now many products available to help users speed up the process of designing and drawing according to various national standards. The choice of product is determined, as a rule, by its functionality required by the engineer, and, of course, by its availability. It’s no secret that software products of this level are not cheap.

Each CAD system has its own advantages and its own characteristics, advantages of use in any design industry.

Therefore, before developing a project, I would like to test the system so as not to buy a “pig in a poke” and choose the most optimal and effective one for myself. Using “pirated” versions of products is fraught with possible errors (viruses, bugs, limitations of some functions) and problems in calculations, not to mention the fact that this method is illegal. On the other hand, buying the official version without even knowing whether it will suit your needs is too expensive.

Therefore, I decided to legally test several of the most popular CAD systems for their accessibility for a simple engineer.

So, the following products were chosen as test products: Compass, Solidworks, nanoCad, Autocad, SpaceClaim, Creo.

The following goals were set:

Find out if this system has a free version of the product for testing,

What is it and is it different from the paid version?

Find out, if possible, how the next versions and additional system modules are provided;

  1. Compass

KOMPAS is a product of the Russian company ASCON. This is a computer-aided design system with the ability to prepare documentation in accordance with the standards of the ESKD series.

"Compass" is produced in several editions: "Compass-Graphic", "Compass-SPDS", "Compass-3D", "Compass-3D LT", "Compass-3D Home". "Compass-Graphic" can be used both as a fully integrated module for working with drawings and sketches in "Compass-3D", and as an independent product that provides tools for solving 2D design problems and producing documentation.

KOMPAS-3D is a three-dimensional modeling system that has become the standard for thousands of enterprises, thanks to the successful combination of ease of learning and ease of operation with powerful functionality for solid and surface modeling.

KOMPAS-3D V15

The main components of KOMPAS-3D are the 3D design system itself, the KOMPAS-Graph automated 2D design system. The KOMPAS-3D system allows you to create a full-fledged electronic three-dimensional model of the future product and obtain the following results: The main components of KOMPAS-3D are the 3D design system itself, the KOMPAS-Graph computer-aided 2D design system. The KOMPAS-3D system allows you to create a full-fledged electronic three-dimensional model of the future product.

KOMPAS-3D includes:

Tools for teamwork;

Developed tools for three-dimensional solid and surface modeling;

Variational direct modeling using geometric and dimensional constraints;

Tools for working with designs and configurations of parts and assembly units;

Tools for working on projects containing several tens of thousands of parts and standard products;

Tools for modeling parts made of sheet material with subsequent automatic generation of a development drawing;

Special features that facilitate the construction of casting molds: casting slopes, parting lines, cavities according to the shape of the part (including setting shrinkage);

Tools for creating custom libraries of standard elements;

Possibility of obtaining design and technological documentation in accordance with GOST, ISO, DIN or enterprise standards: drawings, simple and group specifications, reports, diagrams, tables, text documents;

Possibility of setting dimensions and designations in three-dimensional models (support for the GOST 2.052-2006 standard “ESKD. Electronic product model”);

Tools for transferring data to various CAD/CAM/CAE systems;

The ability to quickly transition from design to manufacturing parts using CAM systems and CNC machines;

Now let's talk about accessibility. In order to understand this issue, I turned to the developer, the Askon company.

Unfortunately, this CAD system is not cheap and the developer does not provide the opportunity to purchase its test version. But there is a shareware Home version, which will be discussed later.

The system can be purchased from the developer’s online store or sales offices.

The price of the basic set ranges from 90 to 110 thousand rubles (depending on the number of licenses purchased).

The basic functionality of the product is easily expanded by various applications that complement the functionality of KOMPAS-3D. Effective tools for solving specialized engineering problems. For example, applications for designing pipelines, metal structures, and various machine parts allow most actions to be performed automatically, reducing the overall project development time by several times.

The price for these applications ranges from 30 to 100 thousand rubles, depending on the selected functionality.

The modularity of the system allows the user to determine the set of applications he needs, which provide only the required functionality. This is a definite plus, allowing the user to save on purchasing additional modules.

KOMPAS-3D, KOMPAS-Graph, as well as libraries and applications that work in conjunction with it, are supplied with a hardware protection key (local or network type). The cost of the hardware protection key is included in the price of the software.

Payment for the product is not an issue if CAD is purchased for the design department. But what if the system is needed for personal use?

Compass-3D LT and Compass-3D Home are intended for non-commercial use. This is a kind of test model. The developer provides the opportunity to download and test a trial version of KOMPAS-3D V15 Home, which works without limiting the functionality of the main system modules for 60 days. To do this, you need to send an e-mail to which a link to download the distribution will be sent. It's quite simple. The disadvantage is that the trial version of KOMPAS-3D V15 Home is only a basic configuration. All advanced configurations are available only in the paid (“boxed”) version of the product.

The package includes both three-dimensional and two-dimensional editors and a documentation system. It is worth noting that the system is focused on the fact that the engineer, when designing a product, will begin, first of all, with 3D modeling. The thing is that by creating a three-dimensional model, you can almost automatically obtain all the necessary drawings of the product. Thus, Compass-3D Home completely links the technical drawings and the three-dimensional model.

The program's start window prompts you to create the following types of documents:

Drawing - 2D drawing with border and title block

Fragment - drawing without frame

Text Document

Specification

Assembly - 3D assembly of parts

Part - 3D part

The developers of Compass-3D Home have seriously taken care of beginners in 3D modeling. Attached is an interactive tutorial on creating three-dimensional drawings, where in addition to texts with pictures there are video materials that duplicate the step-by-step text instructions. Training takes place using real parts as examples.

In the KOMPAS-3D Home system you can open and edit documents created in the professional commercial version of KOMPAS-3D. But to transfer documents from KOMPAS-3D Home to the professional version of KOMPAS-3D, a special license is required. This license is usually held by educational institutions - official users of KOMPAS-3D.

Thus, if you do work at home in KOMPAS-3D Home, the created files will also open in the university classroom, in the professional version of KOMPAS-3D. Files saved at the institute in the professional version of KOMPAS-3D will open in KOMPAS-3D Home. However, files saved in KOMPAS-3D Home cannot be opened in the professional version of KOMPAS-3D at an industrial enterprise or design organization.

Using KOMPAS-3D Home for commercial purposes is illegal. You cannot perform custom training work in KOMPAS-3D Home, or issue documentation for the manufacture of products for sale. But this version will allow you to understand the principle of working with this CAD system and make your choice.

Educational institutions can receive the system on preferential terms. Special rates apply for them. But simply calling and introducing yourself as a representative of the university will not be enough. To obtain a license, you must fill out and provide the developer or seller with a set of documents and an application drawn up in a special form. A sample application and document requirements are presented on the developer’s website.

In addition, ASCON currently invites you to test its system for 3D architectural design free of charge. Beta testers will be able to create their own architectural project, evaluate the developers' plans and take part in the competition for the best review from December 23 to February 23, 2015. The official release of the product is planned for the first quarter of 2015, but you can try the system’s capabilities now, and for now it’s absolutely free.

Thus, the Compass system is a fairly expensive system and the only way to obtain its full version legally is by paying for the purchase. However, promotions from the developer and invitations to test the product can reduce acquisition costs.

Free analogues of Compass 3D

In design automation, one of the best paid systems is Compass-3. There are three versions of this program available to users: the “Compass-3D” itself, the “Compass-3D Home” and “Compass-3D LT” systems.

The Compass system is not cheap, so by installing a similar free program, your savings reach 93,000 rubles.

DraftSight

DraftSight – does not require any fees, just register and that’s it.

In fact, this planar design system duplicates AutoCAD. Can work with files with the DWG extension of any version. Program settings are available in a wide range.

Among the languages of the package there is Russian. The interface will not cause any inconvenience, and the program's capabilities are impressive.

There is a distribution for almost any existing operating system

CADE

A good program for editing diagrams is CADE. It is completely free, but its main purpose is to design network diagrams. Compatible with formats: dbr, pdf, jpeg, shp, dwg, dgn, dxf, dts. Mapping capability and UML support included.

LibreCAD

Another system for working in 2D is the free LibreCAD. This system runs on Windows, Linux and MacOS X. Its functionality contains many tools: polygons, arcs, lines, circles. There are many modifiers. The interface will not be surprising - it is standard.

FreeCAD

FreeCAD is a free CAD system that works with 3D models. Multiplatform. The program is good for use in engineering work for design and technical design. Can create models for printing on a 3D printer, thanks to support for the STL format.

It is compatible with SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics), DXF, OBJ (Wavefront), STEP, IGES, STL (STereoLithography), DAE (Collada), IV (Inventor), SCAD (OpenSCAD) and IFC formats. In addition, FreeCAD uses its own formats.

A9Tech

Another free analogue of Compass-3 is A9Tech. Works in its own formats. The program elements are standard, it is possible to create drawings. A9Tech supports layer-by-layer work in the drawing, allowing you to spend less effort on work.

QCAD

Do you need a free program to create complex 2D drawings and plans? The main purpose of QCAD is to help architects and mechanical engineers draw. Its CAD collection reaches more than 4,700 finished parts. The main problem with this system is the lack of compatibility with files in the DWG format. Only DXF format is supported. You can draw arcs, ellipses, circles, points, straight lines and other elements.

The QCAD functionality will give the designer the necessary tools to create and modify plans and drawings. The kit includes 35 fonts needed for CAD. Unlike other free design systems, it is possible to print to scale. Additional process control is provided by the command line located at the bottom of the main QCAD window. The interface is not complicated, it is understandable at the level of intuition. The system requirements are pleasingly low.

BRL-CAD

BRL-CAD is another one of the line of free CAD programs. This cross-platform program is capable of working with three-dimensional objects using an interactive geometry editor. This powerful application has been in development for over 20 years. The main disadvantage is that it is quite difficult to understand.
