Comparison of iPhone 7 plus and 8. Performance and battery life are comparable. True Tone display

In this article I will analyze several important issues, which torment many: what’s so cool about the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, is it worth upgrading from the 7 Plus and should you wait for the iPhone X?

First impressions and comparison video

Equipment is evil

Everything seems to be the same as before, why am I doing this? And on the matter I want to mention Galaxy Note 8. You see, Note8, of course, will be more expensive, but that’s not the point. But I’m not talking about the dimensions, because they are not much different, and the width of the SGN8 is even smaller.

The point is that when new technologies appear, Samsung allows customers to use them. It is clear that no one will put expensive accessories in your kit, although in many countries around the world Note8, S8 at the start of sales were sold with cool gifts: a Gear 360 camera or Doc Dex. And well done Samsung, if I were a regular user, I would buy what comes with a cool present.

Well, let's forget about gifts, the Note8 kit includes not only a stylus, but also replaceable tips for it, there is an adapter from USB Type-C to Micro USB, there is an adapter from Type-C to regular USB, in the end. There is an adapter for fast charging, because the smartphone supports it, and there are cool AKG headphones. And yes, I specifically praise Samsung, because this is not Lenovo or Dougie, who need to aggressively please customers, Samsung can also afford to put, excuse me, a bolt in the box, instead of all this. But they care about you!

And the iPhone 8 Plus is a functionally neutered device out of the box. Nice gadget, some features of which you need to purchase. For example, a fast charging adapter. And you think it's cheap? Fuck it. Do you want to connect your new iPhone for a new MacBook? Why not buy a cable for this? It's like buying a toy for your child, but it doesn't come with batteries.

Well, this would be the case in SE, the model is cheaper and such steps can be understood, but here we have an expensive smartphone! Not good.

iPhone 8 Plus vs iPhone 7 Plus

Despite all of the above, if we compare iPhones specifically, the new iPhone 8 has become much better than 7: a new case, new screen with True tone, new processor A11 Bionic, which is 70% faster than A10. And in general, your own processors are a trump card, that’s all latest iPhones were the most fast smartphones, and here the gap is quite striking.

Speaking of varieties, there are fewer of them. There are only three colors, not four, only two memory versions, not three: 64 and 256 GB. By the way, I liked all the colors, they are unusual, especially Space Gray. This is not what we are used to, it looks fresh. I would take gray or black for myself, but so far I like the latter better. This is not so visible in screenshots and videos, you have to watch it live.

But the line of iPhones has become even wider - as many as 5 smartphones, starting with the small SE, ending with the not yet released X. And this is cool, the company does not release many devices every year: budget, mid-range, top-end, it’s just that older devices are becoming lower in positioning.

The display is exactly the same, but True tone is clearly visible. Moreover, it does not interfere; on the contrary, it is more natural for the eyes to look at it, and the differences are noticeable when you hold two iPhones: the old and the new. At the presentation they said that the sound from the speakers had become better, but no matter how hard I tried, I didn’t notice any difference at all.

I am very pleased that the dimensions have remained virtually unchanged and the old covers/cases fit perfectly. The only thing is that the apple at the back was moved down a couple of millimeters and, if you had a cutout for it on the case, it will look yellow. Only the thickness has changed, the smartphone has become a little thicker – 7.5 mm versus 7.3. This is due to the advent of a wireless charging module. But the weight has increased significantly - 202 grams versus 188. It will be a lot, even Note8 is 7 gamma lighter!

I will make a separate article about the camera; I want to compare it in more detail to give an assessment. But according to the numbers, all hardware characteristics have not changed, but the number of frames per second in different modes has changed: 4K can be recorded at 60 fps, like on the Panasonic GH5, and 1080p at 240 fps! Strongly. I’ll tell you about the changes in portrait mode separately.

Autonomy has not changed, at least according to Apple. But the battery capacity has decreased, and significantly: it was 2900 mAh, now it is 2675. This should not affect the lifespan due to a more energy-efficient processor made using a 10Nm process technology. Let me also remind you that fast charging has appeared here, but for it you need to buy an additional adapter, as well as wireless standard Qi.

Why should you buy the iPhone 8 Plus now instead of waiting for the iPhone X?

Yes, there are such reasons and I, most likely, will also buy myself an 8 Plus. This is the first iPhone in my memory that can be easily bought in Europe or the States for reasonable money. That is, all the excitement will be about iPhone X, although in many ways it is the same. At the same time, if you want to upgrade to an iPhone X later, you can sell the 8 or 8 Plus for the right price. Moreover, I do not recommend buying X right away, because I am almost sure that there will be problems with it, and with hardware. This is a completely new device, and Apple, even with regular updates, almost always had problems: a cracking back in 3G, an antenna gate in 4, peeling paint in 5, a bend gate in 6, and only in 7 everything was smooth. And the S models fixed all these bugs. Not everything is ok with the new MacBooks either, if anything. And so what we have, the iPhone 8 is, no matter how much Apple wants, iPhone essence 7s, it's the same, just a little better. It has top-end hardware, the best on this moment camera, excellent display and familiar functionality, but definitely without bugs. Therefore, I advise you to buy X if you really want it, either at the end of winter or beginning of spring, or wait until 10s, or whatever they call it.

There are other reasons: more familiar interface and the model of working with a smartphone in general, the presence of Touch ID, a wider display, which makes typing text more convenient, old cases fit...

These are my thoughts about the new product, overall I liked the smartphone, it just needs to be regarded as generation S. Maybe Apple will just abandon the S-ok altogether. Is it worth changing it from iPhone 7/7 Plus? only if you really want it, there are no serious reasons, the “seven” is still very ok. But what to choose when compared with top Android smartphones? The question here is, are you attached to Apple ecosystem: watch, headphones, laptop, applications... If not, feel free to look towards the same Samsung Galaxy S8, or Note8, it’s absolutely gorgeous. What do you think?

Undoubtedly became the most discussed topic of yesterday. New design, the absence of a Home button, Face ID - all this is wonderful and interesting, but it’s time to come down from heaven. Not everyone is ready to pay 80 thousand rubles for a smartphone (even an innovative one).

Apple, as usual, updated its last year’s flagship, but instead of the usual model with the “S” prefix, we got a smartphone with the 8 prefix. The new minimum configuration costs 13 thousand rubles more than the previous model. But is the iPhone 8 really worth considering as a budget purchase this year?

Or, for example, is it better to buy an iPhone 7 complete with AirPods for this money? Let's figure it out.

1. Old design, new materials

We were “sold” again old design, presented back in 2014 (!) with the announcement of the iPhone 6.

When placed on a table with the front panel facing up latest models iPhone – it’s quite easy to make a mistake about which is which. A conscious step by marketers or lazy designers? Let's leave the answer to this question to the people making the final design decisions.

Distinguishing the 8 in a case from last year’s model will be an almost impossible task.

But everything changes when there is no case on the smartphone. New eye-pleasing body colors and a rear glass surface do the trick.

The first reviews from journalists who supported the new product in their hands boil down to a common opinion - iPhone 8 feels better in your hand, since its back panel is less slippery. For those who don’t like covers, this is good, important news.

According to Apple, the iPhone has never had such durable glass on both sides. It will be more difficult to break.

Conclusion:
For those who want to get new tactile sensations from owning an iPhone, “8” is your choice. Unless, of course, you carry your smartphone in a case. And you will be satisfied with the choice of only three colors.

2. Cool processor, the fastest on the market

The iPhone 8 has the same processor as the new one flagship iPhone X. That's all you need to know about the power of the 8.

There is no doubt that the most powerful processor, ever created for the iPhone will cope with any task for the next few years.

The chip was named A11 Bionic and has six cores and 4.3 billion transistors. Its four cores (responsible for efficiency) are up to 70% faster than the A10 Fusion processor. At the same time, it is more energy efficient due to the “smart” distribution of power between the cores.

The iPhone 8 will handle new augmented reality apps and games in no time.

Conclusion:
The performance of the new flagship is enough for the eyes. The Seven will decide daily tasks also without any problems, but it is the A11 Bionic that is designed to use the capabilities of augmented reality. Is this point important and interesting? It's worth looking towards the iPhone 8.

3. True Tone display

Conclusion:
A nice bonus in the iPhone 8, but nothing more. The killer feature would be the use of ProMotion technology, which significantly increases the response speed of the display. Alas. Apparently only in iPhone 8s (or 9?)

4. The coolest camera just got better, but not everywhere

If we compare specifications cameras in iPhone 7 and iPhone 8, then you understand that changes are minimal. New flash function Slow Sync, and slightly improved video recording. Video recording is now possible at new rates of 30 or 60 fps, and slow-motion video at 240 fps is recorded in 1080P.

Of course, if you compare the “larger” versions of the iPhone, everything looks more promising.

In iPhone 8 Plus, due to the dual camera, the “ Portrait lighting", which was advertised at the presentation. Also updated is the True Tone Quad‑LED flash with Slow function Sync and slightly improved video capabilities.

All the tastiest things - “Portrait” mode, “Portrait lighting” in the front camera, as well as dual system stabilization is only available in the iPhone X. Expected and sad.

Conclusion:
Be careful, cameras in smartphones are almost identical in their parameters. You are unlikely to get a serious increase in photographic capabilities when purchasing an iPhone 8. Want a new Portrait Lighting feature? Take the iPhone 8 Plus.

5. New version of Bluetooth

They didn’t have time to talk about this at the presentation, but in vain.

Installed in iPhone 8 bluetooth module version 5.0. A smartphone supporting such a module is able to maintain a connection at a distance more than 100 meters. In other words, now there will be no interference while playing music and unexpected interruptions in communication with the smartphone

The data transfer speed is 4 times higher compared to version 4.2, which is exactly what is used in the “old” iPhone 7.

We described the main features of Bluetooth versions in a separate article:

Conclusion:
A nice bonus. Improved wireless technologies V modern world this is right.

6. Wireless charging

Perhaps this is the most important thing iPhone difference 8 and iPhone 7.

The new product has been taught to charge wirelessly and faster. Qi standard chargers are supported, and a fast charging function has also appeared (up to 50% charge in 30 minutes).

Finally! What appeared in competitors' models a couple of years ago is now available in the iPhone.

Curious to know how much branded wireless will cost? Charger AirPower, which allows you to charge several devices at once. The design of AirPower will be much more complex than that of similar gadgets from other manufacturers, which means the price tag will be higher. Who would doubt that.

The good news is that the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus use the generally accepted and widely used Qi standard.

Conclusion:
Apple has solved the problem of broken wires. Almost.

It's no secret that smartphones have become thinner and less intrusive over the years. Screens are growing, the frames around them are shrinking. The boundaries between us and information - applications, contacts, etc. - gradually erode. Apple has sensed this trend and is strengthening it in . To make this transition smoother, the company has also introduced the 8 Plus.

These devices look familiar and interaction with them is familiar to most users. They can be called traditional. This is not a disadvantage, quite the opposite. Perhaps in the future all iPhones will look like the iPhone X, but for now the iPhone 8 is safe choice With high quality assembly and high performance for those who are in no hurry to get into the future. Perhaps these are the last such traditional iPhone devices.

Like it or not, the iPhone X radically changes the way Apple approaches smartphones. The American company showed how it sees the future mobile devices, so it's no surprise that the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus seem dull in comparison. This is not to say that they have poor design or build quality. It’s just that the appearance of the iPhone has not changed for three years since the appearance of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus and has become boring.

The rounded edges, the camera bump, the Lightning connector, and the volume control are in the same places as always. Again there is an IP67 water and dust protection standard, a capacitive button, stereo speakers and no headphone jack. The iPhone 8 is very familiar, which for some will be an advantage rather than a disadvantage.

That's not to say that the iPhone manufacturing formula hasn't changed at all. Updated color options have appeared, the cases are metal and wrapped in a strip of 7000 series aluminum. The back surface has become glass, which allows the signal to pass through for wireless charging. Some are concerned about the transition from metal cases on glass and there is reason for concern. Surely everyone has seen at least one iPhone owner with cracks on the screen. Apple promises to solve this problem by using the most durable glass in the history of smartphones, and during a week of testing it did not fail. At least being in a bag with other items did not leave any scratches.

Another advantage of glass over metal is the passage of radio signals. As a result, the large antenna bands around the body have completely disappeared. When you look at the back of the iPhone 8, you see glimpses of the camera, the shining Apple logo and the iPhone lettering, the lettering has disappeared Designed by Apple. As a result, the iPhone's appearance is cleaner than ever before. Also, the glass surface leaves a pleasant feeling, although everyone may have different opinions. Glass is a little warmer than metal, but it glides across the table just the same.

All these elements are included in longer, thicker and heavier cases. The iPhone 8 is as thick as the iPhone 7 Plus, the iPhone Plus is heavier than both of them. It would seem that the difference in weight is insignificant, but it is felt. The standard iPhone 8 is still comfortable to hold for long periods of time, but the combination of weight and bezels makes the iPhone 8 Plus too large for one-handed use. For comparison, the Galaxy S8+ and LG V30 have even larger screens and at the same time feel more compact and convenient.

Smartphones have a lot of advantages inside. Apple refused basic version with 32 GB of flash memory and now the countdown starts from 64 GB and ends at 256 GB. For the first time, Apple developed its own GPU, which runs side by side with the A11 Bionic processor. Naturally, there are no problems with speed and smoothness. The larger battery and improved dual camera are in favor of the Plus model, if you can handle the size of this device.

Screen and sound

You've already heard it all: the iPhone 8 has a 4.7-inch IPS LCD screen with a resolution of 1334 x 750, the Plus model has a 5.5-inch diagonal and 1080p resolution. All these parameters do not differ from the models of a year ago, and the similarities do not end there. A wider DCI-P3 color range is used, as on the iPhone 7, brightness and contrast have not increased compared to last year. Thus, the screens remained the same.

Apple moved one of them here useful features tablets iPad Pro. True Tone technology uses an ambient light sensor and changes color temperature screen so that white and other colors remain balanced. You can enable this feature during initial setup systems. Colors become less accurate, but eye strain is reduced.

Continuing the theme of colors, it is necessary to express concern about the lack of support for the standard. Services like Amazon Prime and Netflix are gradually making such richer video available, and users are becoming spoiled by the screens in the Galaxy Note 8 and V30. The iPhone X has full HDR support, but for now you'll have to make do with the iPhone 8's color range. Just like in last year's models, this expanded color range gives certain images, like photos from better cameras, extra richness. For example, red and yellow colors become more noticeable, the blue appears deeper. Landscape shots benefit the most from advanced color range, but many will not notice anything.

What you definitely can't miss is the difference in sound quality. Smartphones now have more powerful stereo speakers; the developers promise a 25% increase in volume. It would be nice if the speakers were more immersive, like the four speakers on the iPad Pro. At least the in-ear speaker complements the capabilities of the bottom speaker.

Software

The iOS 11 operating system has begun rolling out to supported iPhone and iPad models. There are a lot of innovations here, but this review was written before distribution began and some functions were not tested, like payment system on P2P and AirPlay 2. Here we'll focus on what iOS 11 means for the iPhone 8.

At first, iOS appears to look normal. Upon closer inspection, this illusion begins to dissipate. The bet on bold text, which was made last year in Apple Music, spreads further, so you'll see big, rich app titles.

The control center also has a new look, going from a simple settings panel to a cluster of elements with toggles for new features like the True Tone screen and Do Not Disturb While Driving mode. The last switch is especially useful: in theory, the function should block notifications in a moving car, but the device cannot know whether you are the driver or the passenger. New look The control center cannot be called ideal, especially when you periodically accidentally change the screen brightness or volume when trying to close the panel. However, it will take a little time to get used to.

The classic Notification Center no longer exists. Swiping down from the top of the screen shows notifications on the lock screen. You can still use 3D Touch notifications to get an enhanced view, but it seemed like major update will bring improvements in interaction with big amount notifications. Removing all notifications with one gesture is simple action, but how difficult was it to group notifications into individual apps?

Apple's virtual assistant has received significant updates. The voice has become more natural, resulting in the feeling that you are communicating with a person. Siri is also smarter now. Language-to-language translations and pronunciation samples are available to help you learn languages. The assistant performs better on abstract requests like “Play sad music.”

It is worth noting that queries can now be typed on the keyboard, but this does not mean that you need to do so. This option is hidden in the accessibility settings, typing queries takes longer than voice requests. It would be better if there was an easier way to switch between these interaction modes, or if they coexisted in the Siri interface.

The app store has been significantly redesigned App Store, there is a heavy emphasis on videos on app pages and daily editorial posts regarding new programs. Don't expect Apple's internal journalists to come up with any earth-shattering news, since the focus is mostly on advertising. Now that users have more storage space at their disposal, the new Files app should prove useful. Not all users need advanced file management on the iPhone, but it's nice to be able to drag and drop files in cloud storage iCloud Drive. The app also supports other services such as Dropbox and Google Drive, but such manipulations are not yet available there.

Enough in iOS 11 small useful additions. If you hold the volume down and the power button, the reboot will no longer occur - a version of the close window now appears with the option to call emergency services, and to access you need to use a PIN code to unlock.

This is a useful innovation for emergency situations, but the replacement forced reboot quite minor: you need to press the volume control up and then quickly down, then hold the power button for about 10 seconds. Some users like to reset the device if it starts to work incorrectly, so over time this key combination will begin to irritate. There is also an option to turn off the smartphone from the settings menu.

Camera

The main rear cameras on the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are the same, with a resolution of 12 megapixels. The developers claim that it has become faster and has deeper pixels for improved purity and color accuracy. You have to make allowances for the marketing exaggerations and boasts, but overall this is a great camera.

It seemed that compared to the camera on the iPhone 7, the new device conveys details better. For daylight, the detail is even higher than on the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. The difference was insignificant, but it was there.

These smartphones handle colors differently: the iPhone consistently produces more natural photos, while the Note 8's photos look more vibrant and idealized. The Samsung device seems to show the world as it should be, and not as it actually is. At the same time, the HDR option was enabled on both cameras; in the iPhone 8 it is active by default. In low light, the Note 8 produces slightly brighter images without a flash, but Apple offers an improved dual-LED flash that comes on quickly after a long exposure. Many people don't like to shoot with flash, but Apple's approach could change that prejudice. Taking into account great cameras In Samsung devices, the fact that the iPhone is not inferior to them, and sometimes even superior, evokes respect.

The iPhone 8 Plus has a secondary telephoto rear camera with a resolution of 12 megapixels, which is not so impressive. It's not as good in low light as its aperture is f/2.8 compared to the wider f/1.8 on the main wide-angle camera. Having two cameras allows for some interesting tricks. Still available portrait mode shooting, while the quality has increased compared to last year. This time the subject can be within 2.5m of the camera and it can better recognize where to start blurring the edges behind the subject. The first version of the portrait mode did not perform well in low light, but now this problem is less severe, which is helped by the use of flash.

There is also a Portrait Lighting mode. It is only available on iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X and is still in beta testing. This becomes obvious within a few minutes of starting its use. Natural Light mode offers the same standard portrait photos described above. Studio Light brightens the subject's face. The next three modes may be more problematic. Contour Light is supposed to make faces stand out with more dramatic lighting, but instead tends to make them appear darker and more sinister. Stage Light and Stage Light Mono make everything behind the subject appear black and show how difficult it is to properly define the boundaries of the foreground and background. Many photos in these modes turned out simply terrible.

The video shooting has also been updated. There is 4K recording at 60 fps, and there is also 240 fps slow motion at 1080p resolution. When conditions are right, images are surprisingly clear and smooth, even in 4K.

Performance and battery life

This section can be kept relatively short: thanks to the new 6-core Apple processor A11 Bionic devices work very smoothly and quickly. However, this happens with all new iPhone models. What's more impressive is the architecture's ability to boost performance when needed. If you're upgrading from an iPhone 7, you won't see a significant difference when launching apps or scrolling through interfaces.

There are certain situations in which the devices cope without problems with the help of their four economical cores. When the load increases, when launching games or when many applications are open at once, two come into play powerful cores. Every time smartphones are used various combinations these cores so that the speed is high, and the energy consumption and heating are as low as possible. iPhone 8 Plus is better It is suitable for multitasking work, since it has 3 GB of RAM versus 2 GB in the iPhone 8.

The extra power comes in handy when you're running augmented reality apps. IN this testing two such applications were considered, both were not in final version: Ikea Place and the game Machines. There were no problems in their work. It was interesting to see how applications on the Apple ARKit framework would work compared to software Google Tango and hardware capabilities of devices with it. So far the implementation is impressive. The iPhone 8 also renders virtual objects well in physical space, and those objects tend to stick to surfaces better than in Tango apps. Two unfinished proposals do not allow us to reliably judge the future of this technology, but they inspire cautious optimism.

I was also concerned about the duration battery life, given rumors about the reduction in battery sizes compared to last year. As a result, the duration remained at the same level. In a video test at HD resolution and 50% brightness, the iPhone 8 clocked in at 12 hours 2 minutes, a minute less than the iPhone 7. The iPhone Plus clocked in at 14 hours 26 minutes, which is faster. With everyday using iPhone 8 is able to work a full day without problems and still have some left the next morning. The iPhone 8 Plus lasts for about a day and a half, and if you don’t load it, then even two.

The package does not include adapters for fast charging, but the smartphones support the Qi standard. In addition, wireless charging works when smartphone cases are worn. No slowdown in speed was noticed.

Conclusion

When we first met the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, it seemed that they were no different from the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. The impression turned out to be wrong: they have new advantages, it’s just that the design is no longer as impressive as before. If the internal contents are more important to you, the new devices take a significant step forward. The amount of flash memory has increased, cameras and software have been improved, and performance has become higher than ever. Let there be nothing elegant here iPhone style X, but it's still the same wonderful smartphones for those who are planning to stay in the Apple mobile ecosystem or join it for the first time.

Since Apple presented the eighth iPhone, fans of Apple products have been very concerned about the pressing, in principle, question - is it worth changing the good old “Seven” to updated iPhone 8 or 8 Plus? Today we will tell you about how the two gadgets differ from each other, and whether it’s worth buying a new iPhone at all.

Let's start with the design and end with the battery capacity.

Appearance and cost

So, the new G8 has some design differences. This is not to say that they are global, but, nevertheless, they are striking. Back panel The iPhone 8 is now made of glass, and not aluminum, like the seven. Accordingly, the fragility of the smartphone has become 2 times higher, and given the slippery surface of the glass back panel, it is very easy to drop and break the iPhone 8. Without good case Now it’s definitely not possible!

Of course, the manufacturer promises that this glass is as much as 50% stronger than similar materials in previous models. This promise reassures users a little in case the phone accidentally falls, but whether this is actually the case remains to be seen.

Size and iPhone weight 7 and iPhone 8 differ slightly, literally by tenths of a millimeter, that is, even the cases will fit. But the weight increased by 10 grams, and the iPhone 7 was not very light anyway.

The Plus models have a slightly larger difference.

As for the cost of the device, it is approximately 14 thousand higher previous models, if you compare the younger versions in terms of memory capacity. By the way, the iPhone 8 now does not have a model with 32 GB of memory, only 64 or 256 GB.

Display

The display remains almost the same, resolution 1334x750 pixels, 326 pixels per inch , Retina HD.

But the eighth iPhone has a “trick” that is unique to it. It's called the True Tone feature. It works quite simply: the display colors themselves adjust to the ambient lighting. By the way, if you pay attention to user reviews, the function works flawlessly.

As soon as you enter a room with poor lighting, the display becomes brighter and the colors become much warmer. As soon as you go outside on a cloudy day, the device will helpfully change the display colors to colder and even bluish shades.

What about the camera?

Is there a difference in the cameras of the seven and eight? Let's figure it out.

The number of megapixels in the iPhone 8 Plus and the good old “Seven” is the same. This applies to both front and rear cameras.

But there are still differences. The latest version of the flagship can shoot 4K video with truly high speed! It is 60 frames per second, in the iPhone 7 in 4K mode it was possible to shoot only at 30 frames per second. Slow motion mode has also improved, now you can shoot in 1080p and at 120 or 240 fps. This is truly one of the most significant changes!

And although Apple claims that the rear camera of the eighth flagship is modified with some kind of mega-cool, large and fast sensor, color filter and “deep” pixels, regular user is unlikely to notice such improvements. Judging by the reviews, the majority of G8 owners claim that they did not see any difference.

CPU

There aren’t that many people using iPhone 8 yet, but they all managed to notice that the device works much faster compared to iPhone 7.

The eighth iPhone has a dual-core A11 Bionic chip from Apple. Today it is the most powerful and affects the performance of the device. The device works a little faster and more efficiently.

Method of charging the gadget

Perhaps this is a really significant difference between the eighth iPhone and the seventh. iPhone 8 has wireless charging! The device starts charging after you place it on a small pad called AirPower. By the way, this is precisely the reason why I had to do it back cover made of glass in iPhone 8/8 Plus.

The new product allows you to charge up to three Apple devices simultaneously. But this charger is sold separately.

In addition, the iPhone 8 has a “fast charging” function and you can charge your device up to 50% in 30 minutes using power adapters Apple USB, whose power is 29 W, 61 W or 87 W. True, fast charging is also not included in the package and costs from RUB 3,590.00. Moreover, it is also 10 times larger in size than usual, and this is very impractical!

The iPhone 8 comes with a 5-watt, 1-amp charger, exactly the same as the iPhone 7, which means that initially there are no advantages in charging speed over the seven, without purchasing additional accessories.

Memory

And here there are differences between seven and eight. The new generation of flagships starts with 64 GB of memory, which is logical. Numerous photos, videos (especially in 4K) and music require a lot of available memory, and 32 GB, which the line of seventh iPhones started with, is frankly not enough. The maximum memory size is 256 GB.

BY

iPhone 8 and 8 Plus come with installed iOS 11, which added such long-awaited features as screen video recording, smarter Siri with a human voice, and much more.

But an update to iOS 11 is already available for the iPhone 7, so there are no differences between the seven and eight. By the way, if you haven’t updated yet, you can see all the innovations new iOS in this short video:

Battery

And here lovers of “apple” products suffered bitter disappointment. The fact is that the iPhone 8 Plus has a smaller battery capacity than the seventh iPhone! It is 2675 mAh, while for the “seven” this figure reached 2900 mAh.

Probably, Apple, after creating the A11 chip and wireless charging, decided not to spend extra money. But, as the manufacturer claims, the operating time new iPhone will be no less than the iPhone 7, thanks to a more energy-efficient processor. Judging by the reviews, this is indeed the case. But they could also increase the capacity in the new iPhone.

Model colors

The flagship iPhone 8/8+ is available in three colors:

    Silver (silver);

    Space gray (gray);

Here the iPhone 7 wins, it has 5 main body colors available, not counting the limited red.

IN iPhone protection 8 It is worth saying that red and dark blue colors will go on sale over time.

    So what should you choose?

What to choose - the new iPhone 8/8+ or the proven iPhone 7/7+? After we have told you in detail about all the differences between the models, it is up to you to decide. So, which iPhone model best suits your requirements?

If you need a large screen, you should make your choice in favor of the iPhone 8 Plus or iPhone X. Here you will have to choose between the high cost of the iPhone 10 and the heaviest iPhone 8 plus.

If you're not interested in the idea of a big phone, you have a choice of two phones, such as the iPhone 8 and iPhone X. These models are much lighter than the 8P. As alternative option You may be excited about the new features of the iPhone 10, but ask yourself a question. You really need to pay several times more if the iPhone 8 and 8Plus provide you with the features that will be enough.

Below, we'll compare devices to help you decide which device is best for you.

Summary table of characteristics of iPhone 8, 8 plus and iPhone X (10)

If you are looking for pivot table characteristics or fast iPhone comparisons 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X, the information below will answer your question. For a more detailed study and comparison of devices, read on.

Dimensions and weight of iPhone 8/8 Plus and iPhone 10

As we said above, the iPhone 8 and iPhone X are smaller than the iPhone 8 Plus (and other models in the Plus series that came before it).

Ratio overall dimensions:

So, as you can see from the specs summary table, the iPhone 8 is smaller and thinner than the other two new devices from Apple. The difference is half a centimeter in height and a little less in width. As for the difference in the thickness of the gadget, we don't think it will be really noticeable.

So if your choice is based on the size and shape of the new iPhone, there will be very little difference.

However, when it comes to weight, the difference is greater:

So, the iPhone 8 wins - with a difference of 26 grams. To put the weight difference into perspective, 26g is roughly equivalent to 6-7 tablespoons of sugar, which is enough for a very sweet cup of tea.

Therefore, if you want to choose the most lightweight iPhone, then there is no significant difference. It's unlikely that the iPhone 10 will seem huge compared to the iPhone 8.

If you really want to buy the smallest and lightest iPhone, go for the iPhone SE.

The SE measures 123.8mm in length and 58.6mm in width. Thickness 7.6 mm. Its weight is only 113 grams.

If you have made your choice in favor of SE, we recommend that you do not buy it. According to insider information, iPhone SE 2 will be presented by Apple next year.

Size or diagonal iPhone screen 8, 8Plus, X

The iPhone X and iPhone 8 may be nearly identical when it comes to size and weight, but there's one very a big difference: screen diagonal.

iPhone X has a 5.8-inch super display Retina HD.

iPhone 8 has a 4.7-inch Retina HD display.

iPhone 8 Plus has a 5.5-inch Retina HD display.

When it comes to screen size, there seems to be one clear winner here, the iPhone 10. However, the 5.8-inch size is deceiving. Compare the diagonal measurements of several devices shown in the image below.

There are several reasons why the 5.8-inch display size measurement is misleading. Check them out.

First, the main gripe with the iPhone 10's display is the large cutout for the face scanner, which is located at the top of the device. Unfortunately, because The device has not gone on official sale, we cannot say about the exact size of the cutout, but our assumptions indicate a reduction in the display diagonal from 5.7 inches to 5.5 inches. When we take in iPhone hands 10, we will accurately report this measurement. At the moment all we can do is wait.

Secondly, using the iPhone X display in portrait mode indicates a width of 4.7 inches, which is equal to the iPhone 8. Thus, the new product with a face scanner is longer, but not wider diagonally on the display. In other words, iPhone X has a different aspect ratio compared to iPhone 8. Ratio iPhone sides X is approximately 19:9, in the case of the iPhone 8 it is 16:9.

App developers suggest that due to FACE ID, the iPhone 10 display actually has less vertical usable space than the iPhone 8 when used in landscape mode.

To protect the iPhone X display, we advise you to buy a protective glass with rounded edges from Benks.

As for the iPhone 8 plus, it is a large phone and its screen is much larger than that of the comparable new products from Apple. In case of big screen and overall dimensions of the device, it is not convenient for every user to hold it in their hands.

Ultimately, we think it's plausible that even though the screen on the iPhone X is larger than the iPhone 8, the difference in use won't be as noticeable. For this reason, our conclusion in the section on choosing a new product based on screen size will be ambiguous.

If you want to use a device with a really big screen, opt for the iPhone 8P. In the case of a smaller screen, we recommend doing iPhone selection 8, because its price difference between the 10 versions is significant, and the usable display area is virtually unchanged.

Comparison of screen quality and color range in iPhone 8, 8P and X

There is another distinctive feature The one that concerns the iPhone X display is an OLED screen that Apple calls Super Retina.

The iPhone X display has TrueTone, a resolution of 2436x1125 pixels and 458 ppi, with a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1.

The iPhone 8 screen is a regular Retina, with a resolution of 1334x750 pixels at 326 ppi and a contrast ratio of 1400:1.

The iPhone 8 Plus display is Retina technology, just like the iPhone 8, except the resolution is 1920x1080 pixels with a resolution of 401 ppi and a contrast ratio of 1300:1.

Statistics show that the iPhone X's display quality and color saturation will far exceed that of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus.

Differences between the camera in iPhone 8/8 plus and iPhone X. What is the difference?

All three phones have a main 12-megapixel camera on the back, but there are also a number of key differences.

The iPhone X and iPhone 8 Plus actually have a dual-zone camera. There's a wide-angle ƒ/1.8 aperture and a telephoto ƒ/2.4 aperture that combine to create stunning portraits with backgrounds blurred, the iPhone X and 8 Plus also have optical zoom and up to 10x magnification.

The iPhone 8's camera is also 12MP, but it's only a single camera with an ƒ/1.8 aperture, so it can't take fantastic portrait shots, and it can't digitally zoom up to 5x.

Many people love portrait photos taken on the iPhone 7 Plus, so if you are a fan of this feature, we recommend choosing devices with a dual camera.

FACE ID or TOUCH ID?

We're a little sad about the lack of Touch ID on the iPhone X. Many people liked it quite a bit simple function, which allowed you to unlock your device quickly and safely by simply pressing the “Home” button. With Face ID, you unlock your phone by looking at it.

There is a lot of concern online about how reliable and secure a face scanner will be.

Demonstrating the functionality of the face scanner at the iPhone X launch made the worst impression to convince people of its reliability. In terms of whether someone can hack your phone using Face ID, Apple says Face ID is more secure than Touch ID.

We'll have a more definitive solution when we can test Face ID, but for now we'd say there's absolutely nothing wrong with Touch ID on the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.

conclusions

We missed wireless charging, which is new feature in iPhone 8, 8 Plus and iPhone X. We're not sure how important this feature is to you, so we didn't pay much attention to it.

There are several features that the iPhone X has: portrait mode in the selfie camera, and an improved portrait mode on the rear camera. A large screen on a standard-sized phone sounds great, but we feel it's ruined by the FACE ID cutout. In fact, it is no more than on the iPhone 8.

Right now, we advise you to buy the iPhone 8 Plus if you want to use portrait mode when shooting high quality photos, or just choose more cheap iPhone 8, which is no worse than its older brother.
