Introduction

Last year, the South Korean company introduced to the market two tablet models running the Android operating system from the Galaxy line - Tab 8.9 and Tab 10.1. This year Tab 2 7.0 and Tab 2 10.1 were shown. At the tablet presentation, almost all journalists were interested in the main differences between the “old” devices and the “new” ones. I think the same question will arise among potential buyers of Samsung products. So I will try to briefly explain the difference between Tab 10.1 and Tab 2 10.1.

Firstly, in order not to once again conflict with Apple, Samsung slightly changed the design: this time, speakers appeared on the front panel, on the right and left. Secondly, the “second” Tab acquired a slot for a memory card, which was clearly missing in previous model. Thirdly, instead of a chipset from NVIDIA, they installed a chipset from Texas Instruments - from my point of view, the decision was the right one. Fourthly, both Tab 2 7.0 and Tab 2 10.1 can make calls out of the box. What I didn't like was the camera's lack of autofocus. “First Tab” with Wi-Fi costs from 16,000 rubles, with 3G – from 20,000 rubles. “Second Tab” with Wi-Fi - 15,000 rubles, with 3G - 20,000 rubles.

I think that whatever one may say, the new models look a little more advantageous, if only because of the slightly lower price and the presence of a microSD slot.

Design, dimensions, control elements

Unlike the previous version, which looked very much like an Apple gadget, appearance The front side of the Tab 2 has been slightly redesigned: now a thin semi-glossy strip of dark gray color runs along the edge, and on the sides there are speakers covered with a metal mesh. The back side is made of matte light gray plastic.

Tab dimensions are 256x175x8.6 mm, and weight is 565 grams; Tab 2 is 256x175x9.7 mm, and the weight is 588. As you can see, the new product has become a little thicker and heavier. It is possible that this is due to the installation of two speakers on the front. For example, the dimensions of the iPad3 are 241x185x9.4 mm, weight is 662 grams.

The build quality, as always, is at its best: there is no play, no creaks, back cover does not bend. Since the materials are generally non-staining, fingerprints and other marks remain only on the screen, and they can be erased relatively easily. Unfortunately, I have not yet noticed any covers among the accessories for the P5100, since most likely they will not fit the P7500 - there are no cutouts for the speakers.

The front panel houses the front camera and light sensor. The latter reacts quickly and smoothly adjusts the brightness level of the screen backlight. Power button, volume rocker, microSD slot, standard 3.5 mm audio output and slot for regular SIM card are located at the top end. On the bottom there is a microphone and a proprietary Samsung connector. On the back of the device is the camera.

Display

The screen diagonal is 10.1 inches (physical size 217x127 mm), the resolution is the same as on Tab 10.1 - 1280x800 pixels (150 pixels per inch), displays 16 million shades of color, matrix type - PLS-LCD (one of the types of IPS-matrices – Plane to Line Switching), sensor type – capacitive with support for up to 10 simultaneous touches. The sensitivity of the touch layer is excellent. The screen is practically impossible to scratch with sharp objects thanks to the coating made of tempered glass(not Gorilla Glass).

Viewing angles are maximum, but when the P5100 display is tilted, the image acquires a slight purple tint and the brightness drops slightly. It can be adjusted either manually or switched to auto mode, since there is a light sensor on the front of the tablet. It is tall, but somewhat inferior to the Apple tablet. The brightness control range is large: you can set it to very low, at which it is comfortable to watch a movie or read a book at night.

Unlike previous models, the settings Tab 2 10.1 there is no “Screen mode” item. But there is a choice of font style and size (small, small, regular, large, huge).

In the sun, the display fades by about 50%.

Battery

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is equipped with a lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 7000 mAh. The manufacturer claims that a full charge should last up to 10 hours of talk time and up to 2000 hours of standby time. These numbers are close to what I got in practice. For example, when playing movies at maximum brightness and outputting sound to headphones, the battery lasted for 7 hours. In general, good data battery life tablet: in “normal” use mode ( automatic brightness backlight, 3G Internet for about 3 hours and the same amount of Wi-Fi, watching an hour and a half movie and two hours of listening to music on speakers, as well as taking photographs for about one hour) the P5100 worked for almost 8 hours. Even under maximum load (high backlight brightness, games, performance tests, etc.), the battery died after 6.5 hours.

From USB tablet does not charge (there is a red cross on the battery indicator icon), and this is logically clear: the huge capacity of the battery can be “filled” with a small current all day, and it will take about 3.5 hours from the mains.

There are several points in the energy saving section:

Below is a brief description of each item. After a couple of weeks of using the tablet in this mode, I found out that there is not much difference between the energy saving function being turned on and off.

Communication capabilities

The tablet works in 2G (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) and 3G networks (HSDPA 850/900/1900/2100). HSDPA+ speed reaches 21 Mbit/s, HSUPA up to 5.76 Mbit/s. From the “box” it became possible to make calls. The sound can be transferred to a wireless headset.

A complete “gentleman’s” set is available: Bluetooth version 3.0 with support for the A2DP stereo profile, Wi-Fi standards a/b/g/n (Dual-band) with the ability to “distribute” the Internet (“Wi-Fi Hotspot” access point) and USB 2.0 (proprietary connector).

For additional accessories, such as a USB hub, keyboard or mouse, special adapters are sold. Yes, it’s not very convenient, but Samsung, alas, has followed in Apple’s footsteps.

During the entire testing period, there were no problems with networks.

Memory and memory card

The device has 1 GB of RAM, about 700 MB is available, of which about 400 MB is free. Internal Flash memory – 16 GB (only 4.6 GB is displayed in the settings). The write speed on it reaches 15 MB/s. There is a card slot microSD memory(up to 32 GB).

Camera

The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 tablet has two camera modules: the front one is 0.3 MP with a large depth of field, the main one is 3.2 MP without autofocus and flash. Let me remind you that in the previous model the front camera was 2 MP, the main one had autofocus, and there was also an LED backlight.

The main camera is not bad. Maximum resolution up to 2048x1536 pixels. Color rendition is natural, white balance is almost perfect, picture clarity is satisfactory. The photographed text from an A4 sheet can be legible.

Videos are recorded in 720p resolution (1280x720 pixels) at 30 frames per second.

Photo mode interface: on the right – switch photo/video, activate the shutter, enter the gallery; on the left – switch to the front camera, shooting mode (single shot, smile shot, panorama), timer (off, 2 - 10 seconds), brightness (from -2 to +2), settings. It is now possible to change the location of icons.

Performance

This is where the main changes took place. Samsung has refused NVIDIA chipset Tegra 2 and installed the chipset of the American company Texas Instruments - OMAP 4430. Technical process– 45 nm, CPU instruction set – ARMv7, graphics accelerator – PowerVR SGX540. Processor – dual-core Cortex-A9 with clock frequency 1 GHz. The chipset belongs to fourth generation OMAP, which contains the IVA3 hardware multimedia accelerator with programmable DSP, which allows you to encode/decode 1080p Full HD video.

Software platform

The tablet runs on one of the latest versions of Android ICS – 4.0.4. Firmware version – P5100XXLE3, kernel version – 3.0.8-583334-user, build number – IMM76D.P5100XXBLE3. More details from Google Android Ice Cream Sandwich you can check out. The shell design uses Samsung's proprietary TouchWIZ. It must be said that the UI has not yet been “cured” from slight slowdowns while flipping through virtual screens. Frankly speaking, it’s not funny anymore - this has been going on since the first versions of TouchVisa on tablets, and they still can’t fix the obvious bug. Interestingly, any other shell behaves perfectly, be it Yandex.Shell or Go launcher.

Navigation

The tablet is equipped with a GPS navigator. Its characteristics are the same as those of most “tablets”. During the entire time I worked with him, there were no problems. “Addresses”, “Maps”, “Locator” and “Navigator” are installed as applications for joint operation with GPS.

Messages and calls

You can send messages and make calls from your device in the same way as with regular smartphone. A standard Samsung keyboard is used to enter text. The language is switched by pressing the globe icon. Voice and handwriting inputs are available. The keyboard has a separate button for launching the clipboard.

The dialer is huge, appears from below when vertical position tablet and on the right in landscape. The phone part contains several tabs: “Keyboard”, “Journal”, “Favorites” and “Contacts”. Almost all items contain the same functions as in the “old tablets”. By the way, the SIM card slot is normal, i.e. not the now fashionable microSIM. There is a vibration signal.

For Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet is not the first experience of creating similar devices. On account Korean manufacturer there is the original Galaxy Tab model with a seven-inch screen and a astronomical price at the start (which was the main reason for the failure of the tablet on the market), as well as an announced (but still not on sale) tablet with an 8.9" screen. The first model, simply Galaxy Tab, aka P1000 was a breakthrough for Samsung, and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 should be the product that will allow the Korean company to strengthen its position in the tablet market. This is in theory. How are things going in practice?

If you haven't been following the news, here's a quick rundown of the Galaxy Tab 10.1. In the summer, sales of the tablet began in Europe, and on August 10, the Dusseldorf court imposed a temporary ban on the sale of the device in almost all EU countries. Then information appeared that, intentionally or not, Apple filed a lawsuit against photographs of an early version of the tablet (or simply doctored photographs). In these photographs, the tablet does not match the final sample in size and is very similar to the iPad ( real Galaxy Tab 10.1 has a more elongated shape due to the widescreen screen).

At the end of August, the injunction was lifted, and although the proceedings between Apple and Samsung are still in full swing, sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Europe resumed, and just yesterday official sales of the tablet started in Russia.

It's no secret that the tablet market has Apple iPad and other devices. Until recently, no one violated Apple’s hegemony, however, this situation in sales continues to this day. However, first, HTC released an original, albeit expensive device - HTC tablet Flyer, and now Samsung with the Galaxy Tab 10.1 model has every chance to at least slightly improve the position of “other manufacturers” in the tablet market. In a good way, this role was assigned to Motorola with its XOOM, but sales of a tablet with a crude version of Android played a cruel joke on XOOM. This device not only did not become popular, but acquired a bad reputation due to the dampness of the system.

So let's go back to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and see what's interesting about this tablet. And most importantly, let’s find out whether it’s true that having bought the Galaxy Tab 10.1, you will begin to enthusiastically invent scenarios for using the new toy, exactly as if you had bought an Apple iPad?

Design, assembly

I really dislike Samsung for the design of their products. They remind me of plastic boxes that have been rolled over. In this regard, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is no exception - but I liked its appearance. I can’t explain this phenomenon; perhaps I fell for the glossy cover made of dazzling white plastic; I was probably “hooked” by the thinness of the case or the silver rim around the perimeter of the front side. One way or another, I can say that, in my opinion, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 turned out beautiful.

For all its typicality (large screen, buttons on the sides), the tablet somehow stands out from its competitors, and strangely, I can’t call this device at all similar to the Apple iPad. And the point here is not that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is so cool, but that the iPad has its own unique style and design, and other tablets, alas, are still far from it. I say this as the owner of none Apple tablet and other products of this company.

There are no complaints about the assembly, everything fits well, nothing creaks. Although, due to the fact that the tablet is thin, sometimes it seems that one careless movement and it will crack. This, of course, is unlikely to happen, but the small thickness suggests such thoughts.

The case is easily soiled, and although marks and stains on the white glossy cover are invisible, if you look closely, you can see them, many, many. The surface of the screen gets very dirty, as with any other tablet (including the Apple iPad, what can we hide).

Dimensions

The tablet is large and thin, larger in size than the Apple iPad and most other models. Let's compare the sizes of several tablets:

  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1– 256.7 x 175.3 x 8.6 mm, 565 g
  • Apple iPad 2– 241.2 x 185.7 x 8.8 mm, 601 g
  • Motorola XOOM– 249.1 x 167.8 x 12.9 mm, 730 g
  • HTC Flyer– 195.4 x 122 x 13.2 mm, 420 g

It’s comfortable to hold the tablet with both hands; this model is noticeably lighter in weight than, for example, Acer Iconia Tab A500 or Motorola XOOM. Of course, at first a difference of 150 grams does not seem too serious, but if we're talking about about the convenience of reading or watching movies on a tablet, holding it in your hands all the time, then 150 grams makes itself felt.

Controls

The main control element is the display. Unlike the Apple iPad, there is no hardware key below the screen or touch buttons. This is one of the features of Android OS 3.0 and 3.1 - the controls are located at the bottom of the display, inside it work area, and not on the body. Above the screen there is a peephole of a 2 MP camera with a fixed focus and a light sensor with which it works automatic adjustment screen brightness level.

At the top end of the tablet there is a power key (screen activation), a volume rocker, as well as a SIM card slot covered with a plug and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

There are speaker holes on the left and right edges of the device, on bottom end– proprietary connector and microphone hole. The connector, as well as the included cable for it, are very similar to these elements in the Apple iPad. It’s not very clear why Samsung abandoned the standard microUSB in favor of a proprietary interface; this will create difficulties if the owner of the tablet, for example, loses the included cable.

By the way, the cable here is used to connect to a PC and for charging; in the second case, it is simply inserted into a special charging block. Again, this logic in accessories has been used by Apple for a long time, and later HTC switched to it.

Screen

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 uses touch screen capacitive type with a 10.1" diagonal and multi-touch support. The screen is made according to PLS technology(Plane to Line Switching), technically the PLS display is in no way inferior to the IPS screens in the Apple iPad 2; both technologies are very similar. The display has a resolution of 1280x800 pixels and is capable of displaying up to 16 million colors. For those who are interested in reading more about the features of screens in different tablets, their pros and cons, here detailed material at displaymate.com (in English).

If we move away from listing the characteristics of the screen and simply subjectively describe the quality of the picture on it, then I personally like it. Color rendition, maximum viewing angles, good brightness margin, all this is in Galaxy display Tab 10.1.

The only thing that confuses me is the resolution. Of course, it is now standard for tablets with 10.1" screens, but, in my opinion, it’s time for devices with a similar screen diagonal to move to higher resolutions. And the second point is the behavior of the screen in the sun. For all the quality of the display in the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 It immediately goes blind in the sun, however, like almost any other screen with a large diagonal and resolution, this is still an unsolved problem for tablets.

The sensitivity of the screen is excellent, it responds instantly to touches, there is not even the slightest delay. The screen is protected by GorillaGlass; there are no scratches or damage to it, even if you accidentally run a sharp object such as keys across the surface.

In the screen settings, you can select one of three operating modes: Dynamic, Standard and Film. In Film Mode, the picture on the screen changes to a warm tone, and White color takes on a barely noticeable shade of red. In the “Dynamic” mode, on the contrary, cool tones predominate, and blue is mixed into white. If we draw an analogy with LCD monitors, then in the “Film” mode the tablet screen works in temperature range 5,000 - 5,500 K (for monitors this is usually the Red mode), and in the “Dynamic” mode - in the range of 7,000 - 8,000 K.

Camera

The tablet has two cameras, a front one with a resolution of 2 MP and fixed focus and on the cover, 3 MP with autofocus and flash. I won’t describe the camera interface; it is simple and quite convenient, but tablet owners are unlikely to use the camera itself often.

You cannot use the main camera flash as a flashlight using standard means, but you can turn it on to record video. The front camera can be used for photos and videos. In the future, it will probably also be possible to use it in Skype for video calls (when Skype adds tablet support to its application). Let's talk a little about the main three-megapixel camera.

Photo

The following resolutions are available for photos:

  • 3.2M – 2048x1536
  • 0.9M – 1024x768

White balance:

  • Daylight
  • Cloudy
  • Incandescent lamp
  • Fluorescent light
  • Negative
  • Shades of Gray
  • Sepia

You can also configure the following settings:

  • Shooting mode (one shot, smile, panorama, motion shot)
  • Scenario (twilight, landscape, night, sports, indoors, sunset, dawn, text)
  • Exposure value (-2.0 to +2.0)
  • Focus mode (autofocus, macro photography)
  • Timer (2, 5, 10 seconds)
  • ISO (100, 200, 400)
  • Exposure metering (center-weighted, spot, matrix)
  • Using GPS

You can evaluate the quality of the photo from the examples given. In my opinion, it is below average; for shooting documents that later need to be recognized, each page will have to be shot 3-5 times to get a readable image.

Shooting text:

Panorama:

Video

Video is recorded in mp4 format (h.264 codec) with variable recording speed, from 20 to 30 frames per second. Recording bitrate in 720p resolution – 11.7 Mbps (data Media Player Classic). Sound recording is carried out using the aac codec, in mono mode, quality 96 kbps.

The following resolutions are available for video:

  • 1280x720
  • 640x480

You can also adjust the white balance, exposure value, turn on the timer, and select an effect. You can change the focus point during video shooting.

You cannot scale the image either in the “Photo” mode or in the “Video” mode at any resolution. I don't know if this is a feature of my individual sample or just a feature of the tablet.

Speaker volume

The tablet has stereo speakers; they are located on the side ends of the device. To my ears, the speakers in the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 provide very good portable device sound quality, the sound is clear, without extraneous noise and even, I would say, deep. However, the volume level of the speakers is at an average level, that is, by turning the volume to maximum, you will simply hear music or a movie well, but not loudly.

Autonomous operation

The tablet uses a non-removable Li-Pon battery with a capacity of 7000 mAh. I didn't do any specific battery life tests because convenient means there is no way for this on Android yet (ah, Windows times Mobile), and scenarios for using tablets different users can be completely different. Therefore, I’ll just tell you how long on average the tablet worked for me when used in various conditions.

Most often, I just “played” with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, that is, I took the tablet to read the latest news, browse several sites, or read a newspaper in PressReader (I liked this program, it’s really convenient). The brightness level is in “Auto” mode, Wi-Fi is on, a SIM card is installed in the device, but the tablet connected to the network via Wi-Fi. In this mode, the device worked from charge to charge for an average of 11-12 hours (depending on how). If we translate into days, then one charge was enough for me on average for three days of such quiet use.

I also watched a video on the tablet in a resolution of 1024x576 (TV series, BDRip), turned off Wi-Fi during movie shows, and set the brightness level to about 50%. In this mode, the tablet lasts for 8-9 hours, which is also not bad.

Overall, I was pleased with the results of the autonomous Samsung works Galaxy Tab 10.1, in this parameter the tablet is comparable to the Apple iPad, and in general, if we leave the iPad out of the equation, the performance of the Samsung tablet is excellent. The charge is most often enough to watch videos non-stop on a long flight, and to work with email and read the news for a couple of days.

Performance

The tablet is built on the NVIDIA Tegra2 platform with a dual-core processor with a frequency of 1 GHz (Cortex-A9). The device has 1 GB of RAM, about 750 MB is available for system operation (the visible part), of which approximately 400 MB remains for running programs if you “kill” all programs hanging in the background.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has a 16-64 GB memory module for storing user data. There is no slot for a memory card, in my opinion, this is a drawback, especially considering the fact that flash memory is constantly getting cheaper, and today you can easily find a microSD card with a capacity of 32 GB for one and a half thousand rubles.

The situation is the same with video playback. The tablet plays videos of any resolution up to 1080p in .wmv and .mp4, for example, the test video (1920x800 pixels, 8,000 kbps, wmv3 codec, sound in wma, 128 kbps) ran on the device without the slightest delay or freezing of the picture and sound. At the same time, the tablet out of the box supports all standard Android video codecs, as well as DivX and Xvid and container.mkv. That is, almost any video files can be played on a standard player. However, problems arise with playback in it.mkv; videos in 720p are already slowing down.

As one of the solutions, you can use the paid player DicePlayer with hardware video decoding, but I personally had the following situation with it - some of the videos in .mkv play fine, but the rest of the video, which can be played in a standard player without problems, can be watched on Dice because It was simply impossible for the brakes and sound delays. As a result, you can simply install Dice and use it together with a standard video player.

Below are the test results in several benchmarks.

One might be surprised why Samsung doesn’t use its own platform in a top-end tablet, but is content with the weaker NVIDIA Tegra2, but in practice the difference is almost invisible, unless, of course, you buy a tablet just to watch videos in .mkv (anime fans will be sadness). The tablet “plays” videos in 720p and 1080p (wmv) quality, responds well to touches, quickly switches between running tasks and does not slow down even with a large number of programs running in the background. In my opinion, this is enough to not pay attention to the platform being used, but simply use the capabilities of the device.

Interfaces

The tablet has a slot for a SIM card, however, unlike the younger model (P1000), you cannot make calls from it. The SIM card is used here for two things - accessing the Internet via 2G/3G and writing/receiving text messages.

To synchronize with a PC and transfer data, a proprietary connector is used, which looks very similar to the connector in the Apple iPad (I already said this). USB 2.0 interface. Copy speed from PC to internal memory tablet - about 5 MB/sec, copying a 100 megabyte file takes about 18-20 seconds.

Built-in module Bluetooth 3.0. Most common profiles are supported, including:

  • Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) - control music playback from a wireless headset.
  • Generic Audio/Video Distribution Profile (GAVDP)
  • Audio/Video Distribution Transport Protocol (AVDTP)
  • Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) - stereo audio transmission via Bluetooth
  • Hands-Free Profile 1.5

Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n). The Wi-Fi module works flawlessly. On your tablet, you can configure the rules for switching Wi-Fi to sleep mode. When the module is operating, the tablet does not heat up at all.

Wi-Fi hotspot. In Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, as in other devices on Android based 2.2 and higher, the function of “sharing” 2G/3G Internet connection via Wi-Fi is implemented. It works as follows. In the wireless interfaces menu, the “Point Wi-Fi access"and its settings open, where the user is asked to select the network name, password, and connection type (Open, WPA2 PSK). It turns out that you can connect to the Internet, for example, from your laptop through routing on your tablet, and to access the network you will use a GPRS/EDGE or UMTS/HSDPA connection that is pre-configured on your device.

This function can be used in different situations: at the dacha or on business trips, in a hotel where Wi-Fi is not available, but there is a local SIM card with relatively inexpensive 2G/3G traffic.

Navigation

Like Samsung smartphones, the tablet is equipped with a GPS module. Finding satellites after launching the navigation program takes from 5 to 15 seconds, depending on your location. For navigation, the device has Google Maps And Google Navigation. Using Google Maps, you can get directions, search for addresses by street names or places. With Google Navigation you can use navigation with route guidance and voice guidance.

Text and voice input of text

The tablet has all the standard tools for text and voice input, three on-screen QWERTY keyboards: standard from Samsung, standard from Google and proprietary Swype, as well as an application for voice input from Google. For my taste, the most convenient of the three is Swype, below I will tell you why.

Even if you are not ready to use Swype in the mode for which it was created (entering text with a continuous finger movement on the keyboard, without lifting it), I recommend turning it on anyway instead of the standard keyboard. Swype makes it easier and faster to type text due to the fact that you can enter almost all the additional characters used without switching to special mode. On a Samsung keyboard without this mode, you can only enter numbers.

Swype keyboard:

Standard keyboard Samsung:

Standard Android keyboard 3.1:

Features that are typical for keyboards from Samsung and Swype:

  • Each time you press an on-screen button on the keyboard, the device vibrates slightly
  • Switching the language is done by pressing one key
  • Can be enabled sound accompaniment clicks
  • In order to move the cursor inside the text, you just need to touch any area of it; a small “thing” appears under the cursor, which is convenient to move

A standard Google application is provided for voice input. Using voice input in Russian or English (and several other) languages, you can search for information on your phone or on the Internet, enter addresses for Google Maps or Google Navigation, and also dictate text messages, which is very convenient. For example, when I voice input of a text message, the system recognizes about 80 percent of the words correctly, and often the entire text.

Installed programs

The smartphone runs Android 3.1 OS; it uses a standard interface for this system with minimal changes.

The standard Android 3.1 lock window is used without any changes. At the bottom of the main screen there is a call button additional panel with program launch shortcuts, you cannot change shortcuts, as far as I understand. At least I couldn't find the setting responsible for this. The system panel is located at the bottom of the screen, on the right side there are battery level icons, Wi-Fi status connections and others. When you click on this area, a control panel appears wireless interfaces and notifications from the system line.

In the programs menu, applications are divided into two tabs - All programs and My applications. You cannot create new folders here or otherwise change the arrangement of elements.

I will list some of the programs installed on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Calculator. A simple calculator with a panel for additional calculations.

Gallery. Standard for Android gallery images with a panel of mini-images at the bottom. Here you can crop or flip photos.

Photo editor. Editing is available for photos; you can add effects to them, crop or rotate them.

BookReader. The program is not available initially; it is downloaded to the tablet the first time you access books from the Books and Press utility. Convenient reading program based on FBReader. There are several color themes, you can change the font, reading mode (night and day).

Zinio. A program for purchasing and reading glossy magazines, including those in Russian. My device had an old version installed, in which I couldn’t log in. I downloaded a new one and everything worked. The cost of magazines in the app is comparable to their price in paper.

PressReader. A convenient program for reading paper periodicals. For a certain subscription fee (you can choose from several tariff plans, more details) you can download newspapers and magazines and read them from the screen, broken down by content. The list of publications is huge; for Russia alone, more than 70 magazines and newspapers are available in the program. You can download 7 newspapers for free to try.

File manager . A simple, but nevertheless easy-to-use conductor.

PenMemo. An application for creating text or handwritten notes.

Notes. Simple program for writing short text notes.

Polaris Office . For reading and editing office documents there is Polaris Office. True, the version that was in my sample worked strangely. It was possible to edit and view documents, but word files were displayed with spaces after each first capital letter on the line. That is, if the line begins with a capital letter, then the text flows correctly, without extra spaces, and if a line begins with a capital letter, then a space is placed after it, although it should not be there.

I didn't tell you about the convenient one music player with the ability to select an equalizer or its manual settings and some other applications. About widgets for the desktop, most of which, in my opinion, are useless, but among them you can find a couple of convenient ones.

Conclusion

I have already made all the conclusions in the previous chapter, so I will provide the remaining information. In Russia, the tablet has been on sale since August 25, the official cost of the device is 23,990 rubles. We write that 24,000. For this money, Samsung offers a beautiful and almost polished in terms of software (except for a couple of bugs) tablet with a high-quality screen, good external sound based on the current platform with the ability to watch HD video. As a toy for installing new software, as well as watching videos and reading news in Samsung Internet Galaxy Tab 10.1 fits perfectly. And the slightly inflated price tag will soon be adjusted, as often happens, if not by Samsung, then by another method widely known in Russia called the “gray market.”

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 N8000 16Gb

This tablet is difficult to find on sale - at least when it comes to new devices. The reason is simple - Galaxy Note 10.1 N8000 has been out of production for a long time. Meanwhile, this device is of great interest. And the point is not at all that it has support for 3G networks, is built on the Samsung Exynos 4412 and is equipped with 2 GB of RAM (very good for its time), but that the tablet has a stylus - it is located in the case. Therefore, the tablet may be of interest to those users who, for example, draw.

Positioning

Ruler TAB tablets A means affordable models, that is, devices that attract with their price/quality ratio. Considering that the tablet market has been declining for three years now, large manufacturers are not trying to release many models, but Samsung continues to saturate the market with its solutions with different diagonals and decided to update the 10-inch models, which are a completely endangered type of tablet. The update compared to the previous TAB A 9.7 inches looks interesting, they have improved the memory capacity, installed a faster processor, a larger battery, and improved the case. In a word, the evolutionary new tablets are better, this is the development of the line. In his price segment from 20 to 25 thousand rubles, oddly enough they have no direct competitors, only old models from other manufacturers that run on Android 5.1. To some this may seem like an insignificant difference, but if the price is comparable there is a choice and you can get the latest version of the OS, then why not. These tablets turned out to be interesting workhorses, with a maximum life cycle. They can be purchased for 4-6 years to use at home or at work.

Design, dimensions, control elements

The tablet has three color options - white, black and blue. In all cases, the plastic is matte, there are no hand marks or scratches on it. Compared to the younger TAB A 7-inch model, the quality of the case and plastic here is clearly higher, the model is in a different price segment.

The transition, or more accurately the return, to a 16:10 widescreen screen is welcome; it convenient option for home or work tablet, watching videos. Typically, 3G/4G models of Samsung tablets retain a speaker, but the SM-T585 does not, so for conversation you will have to use regular speakers on the bottom, then you will have to hold the tablet upside down, which is inconvenient. The microphone is located exactly opposite, so this was done deliberately; after all, this is a tablet, not a phone.

Tablet size 254.2 x 155.3 x 8.2 mm, weight 525 grams. The dimensions are typical for such models, there are no achievements or shortcomings, a good form factor, comfortable in the hands. Moreover, the tablet has been adapted at the software level to work in both horizontal and vertical orientations; you can choose what is interesting to you.

On the right side there is a slot for memory cards; it is covered with a plug attached to the case. Nearby is a slot for a nanoSIM card. Here you also see a paired volume key, as well as an on/off button. The 3.5 mm connector, as well as microUSB, is located at the top end.

The tablet has a physical key, on the sides there are two touch sensors. I don’t like that the touch keys are located close to the central one; you expect them to be closer to the sides and often miss when you press without concentrating on it.

There are no complaints about the build quality of the device, it is excellent, the tablet will have a maximum life cycle, you will replace it in 4-5 years, unless you break it first.

Display

The display characteristics are as follows - 10.1 inches, TFT IPS, 1920x1200 pixels (224 ppi), 16:10, light sensor. The screen is very good in its class, it is quite bright and comfortable both indoors and outdoors. After using the tablet for a month, there were no complaints about its operation; the display adapts to different conditions lighting.

Chipset, memory, performance

Samsung Exynos 7870 chipset, 8 Cortex A53 cores up to 1.6 GHz, Mali-T830MP2 graphics coprocessor. This is a very good solution, especially since it is made according to the 14 nm technological standard, which gives an increase in operating time. In terms of performance, the tablet seemed like a golden mean to me; on the one hand, there is a reserve for the future, this is not a budget solution, on the other hand, on a single charge it lasts longer than all its competitors. This tablet reminded me of something samsung smartphone J7 (2016), which also liked the long work.

RAM 2 GB. Built-in memory 16 GB, 10.5 GB available to the user. Look at the results of synthetic tests.

You can install memory cards up to 200 GB, which is not bad.

Battery

It's in the tablet Li-Ion battery capacity 7300 mAh. For it, the video playback time is stated to be up to 13 hours (in reality 9 hours at maximum brightness).

Full time Charging the battery takes about 3.5 hours. My tablet worked much longer than all its analogues, an increase of at least one and a half times. The battery is the most strong point this decision. I would like to see fast charging here, but this is already in the realm of dreams.

In the settings you can find an energy saving mode, including an extreme one, but these modes do not significantly increase the operating time, but the speed of the device drops noticeably.

Camera

The main camera is 8-megapixel, the image quality is typical for tablets, it is average. For some reason they added a flash to the camera. The camera cannot be considered something serious, however, take a look for yourself.

Communication capabilities

The tablet has support for USB on the GO, and the version is USB 2.0. BT version 4.2. For the version with a SIM card, 4G is supported, there are no problems with working on Russian networks. I note that the tablet supports ANT+, which is unusual for such solutions.

Software features

Inside there is the usual Android 6, TouchWiz shell. This is a typical representative of tablets from Samsung, there is a division of the screen into areas, work in several windows.

The proprietary Children's mode is available on all Samsung tablets, and it is also available here. In this mode, you can configure the tablet so that children have access to only a limited number of functions and applications, and you can also set a schedule. Very good program, which turns samsung tablets if necessary, into children's devices. Similar software is usually worse and not free.

Likewise modern models Smart Manager has appeared, in which you can see what is occupied by the memory, clear it, and install an antivirus if necessary.

In the "Gifts" section you can find free apps and subscription to different services. The gifts themselves are few and far between.

The 4G version of the tablet will also have a dialer plus an SMS application. This tablet can act as big phone, you can talk on it even without a headset.

Stick to typical ones Android features I don’t see any point, they are described in a separate material.

Impression

As I said at the very beginning review Tab A 10.1 (6) is workhorse, him good screen, quite a powerful chipset for this price, the latest Android version and a good battery. You can criticize that the sound from the speakers is not very clear, the buttons are located inconveniently for games, but these are minor things. The tablet turned out to be successful and has a favorable price/quality ratio in its segment. For the WiFi version in branded retail they ask for 21,990 rubles, for LTE 24,990 rubles. In federal retail, taking into account discounts, you can find these tablets 1-2 thousand rubles cheaper.

These tablets have practically no direct competitors; you can remember the one that was leaving the market Lenovo Tab 2 A10, but it has an older version of Android, and it is much simpler and has less performance. This is a vanishing nature; there is no particular point in buying it. But it costs 18 thousand rubles.

You can look at the Lenova Yoga Tablet 3, also an old version of Android, but other characteristics are close to the Tab A. Moreover, the LTE version costs 20,000 rubles in Svyaznoy.

There is also such a model as Huawei Mediapad T2 10.0 with LTE is also a thing of the past. By and large, there is no choice among new tablets; Samsung devices find themselves in a kind of vacuum. Its predecessor, the Tab A 9.7, costs noticeably less, the difference is 2-3 thousand rubles, but it is noticeably worse. Therefore, it is worth focusing on new devices.
