One of the most common representatives of the budget line of Samsung tablets is the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0. The secret of buyers' love for this model lies in its reliability, elegant appearance and low cost. The price of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 tablet when ordering it through various online stores ranges from $150 to $185. Considering the fame of the Samsung brand, buying a tablet for that kind of money is simply a gift.

Appearance of Galaxy Tab 4 7.0

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 tablet looks like a real elite model. This effect is achieved thanks to the texture of the back cover, reminiscent of genuine leather. The weight of the gadget is only 276 grams, that is, the tablet is almost weightless. The dimensions look like this: 186.9 * 107.9 * 9 mm. The compactness of the device allows it to fit comfortably even in small handbags. Thanks to the smooth lines traditional for Samsung products, the tablet is pleasant to hold with your hands and use the touchscreen. The case of the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 is made simply impeccably: there are no creaks or backlashes when using it.

The color rendering quality makes 16 million shades available. The screen resolution of 1280*800 creates all the prerequisites for maximum pleasure from viewing media files. Only the 7-inch diagonal leaves a trace of dissatisfaction, but this feeling is fully compensated by the affordable price of the gadget.

Performance

The central processing unit of the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, equipped with four cores and characterized by a clock frequency of 1.2 GHz and RAM of 1.5 GB. Excellent options for a budget employee. All useful applications and popular games of medium difficulty work flawlessly. Surfing the Internet and watching movies is also not a problem. The tablet does not play serious games. The reason for this is not only the characteristics of the processor, but also the modest amount of built-in memory - 8 GB, which does not accommodate “heavy” games, and there is no support for downloading to a memory card (this is also typical for expensive Samsung tablets). You can expand the tablet's memory using Micro SD, the maximum capacity of which can reach 32 GB.

Cameras

Unfortunately, the developers have equipped the tablet with fairly average cameras: the main resolution is only 3 megapixels, the front one is 1.3 megapixels and can only provide video communication. However, the quality of the resulting images is quite satisfactory for posting them on social networking pages.

Battery

The autonomy of the tablet evokes only words of approval from many users. In standby mode, the battery life is practically not consumed, you can watch videos without interruption for up to 10 hours, you can use the Internet for the same amount of time, and you can listen to music without stopping for about 190 hours.

Network and wireless capabilities

To exchange information between the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 and a desktop computer or peripheral devices, the tablet provides Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 3G. Thanks to the convenient service from the manufacturer Samsung Link, the tablet has easy access to other gadgets: a laptop or phone. There will be a problem with fast transfer of large files, since the device does not support the OTG protocol. Also, some users note that the Wi-Fi module is a little weak, but if there is a stable signal, difficulties in exchanging information are practically not felt.

You can insert a micro-SIM card into the Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 tablet and use it as a phone. For greater convenience of making calls, you can connect headphones via a standard 3.5 mm jack. In addition, the tablet has a USB 2.0 connector and supports a GPS navigation system.

Galaxy Tab 4 Software

The tablet is powered by the Android 4.4 platform, which allows for many useful add-ons, including the Hancom application, which allows you to edit Word documents and Excel spreadsheets. The disadvantage of the installed operating system is the impossibility of updating it to Android 5.0 versions.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 Review Summary

Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 is the most balanced tablet if we consider it from the point of view of price-quality ratio.
Impeccable external design, ease of use, high performance and functionality, as well as simplicity and accessibility explain the enormous popularity of the device and encourage people to buy it.

Samsung recently introduced a new line of flagship tablets: the Galaxy Tab S. Today, the line includes only two gadgets: with 10.5-inch and 8.4-inch screens. We got an 8.4-inch one for testing - we’ll tell you about it.

Super AMOLED 8.4’’ screen with a resolution of 2560x1600 pixels, weighs only 298 grams, 3 GB of RAM, about 10 hours of continuous battery life.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S review: new flagship tablet

Many, by the way, were surprised that Samsung seemed to “forget” that the company’s portfolio already has flagship tablets: the Galaxy Note Pro. Although, it seems to us, the company has not forgotten anything, but simply decided to rename the line, drawing an analogy with smartphones, where top Samsung models are released under the names Galaxy S and Galaxy Note. However, if in the case of smartphones the difference between the S and Note lines lies in the screen diagonal, then this is not observed with tablets. However, the Galaxy Note Tab, which is also produced by Samsung, is still a slightly different device: equipped with a Wacom stylus and a special touch layer for it, and equipped with software to support the stylus and numerous “pen” functions, which, however, turned out to be not very in demand.

As you can see, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 has no direct competitors. iPad mini Retina is a conditional competitor, because The worlds of iOS and Android tablets overlap very little. Most often, when choosing a tablet, buyers are guided by either the “iPad only” or “anything but Apple” rule. LG G Pad 8.3, on the other hand, is already at least a year out of date, and therefore is also not very suitable as a direct competitor.

Appearance

The tablet is made in the style of other Galaxy gadgets of 2014. Unity of style is a sign of a serious approach. At the same time, it is not so easy to confuse it with other tablets and smartphones from Samsung, and with the products of other companies, it won’t be confused at all, if you understand at least something about it.

Appearance of Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4

First of all, it is worth noting the rather narrow frames around the screen. They make the tablet really compact. At 8.4 inches diagonally, 0.5 inches larger than the iPad mini (Retina), the Galaxy Tab S is narrower, making it easier to hold with one hand. Although, at the same time, it is a little longer - due to the screen aspect ratio of 16:9, and not 4:3, like the iPad.

Below the screen is a button block typical for Samsung products.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 buttons

On the right side there are all the necessary buttons and connectors, except audio. Here you can see: a power/lock button, a volume control rocker, an infrared port for controlling household appliances (for example, TVs - TVs from most well-known and not so well-known manufacturers are supported), a MicroSD slot and a slot for micro-SIM.

Right side of Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4

At the bottom there is a micro-USB for charging and synchronization, as well as a 3.5 mm jack for connecting headphones or a headset.

Bottom end of Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4

By the way, the tablet is equipped with stereo speakers - they are located on the bottom and top ends. If you turn the tablet horizontally, as when watching movies, they will create a good stereo base for such dimensions. This, by the way, compares favorably with the same iPad, where the stereo speakers are located at one end.

Back side of Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4

On the back side you can only find an 8-megapixel camera lens and a diode flash (and in our case, also a sticker with the number of the test sample).

Screen

Both tablets (Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and Galaxy Tab S 10.5) use a Super AMOLED screen, but if the 10.5-inch uses a traditional RGB Stripe layout, the 8.4-inch uses PenTile. However, with such a high pixel density (359 ppi) this is not so easy to notice.

Adjusting screen color rendering

We have no complaints about the color rendition of the screen (remember, many Samsung gadgets have the ability to customize the color rendition of the screen - from cinema-neutral to acid-bright), and also about the brightness reserve. Viewing angles are maximum, although you need to remember that AMOLED screens can be purple at certain viewing angles.

Software

Traditionally, Galaxy products come with the TouchWiz shell pre-installed. For some this is a plus, for others it is a minus - it’s a subjective question. It seems to us that the shell as a whole is not bad: quite functional and not overly overloaded.

As of today, Galaxy Tab S runs Android 4.4.2. Our test one came pre-installed with about 50 applications, which we consider a bit of an excess - an uninitiated user will have to figure out what's what for a long time. Let us remind you that you cannot delete unnecessary standard applications.

Pre-installed apps on Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4

It is also worth noting that Samsung Galaxy tablets equipped with a cellular module are traditionally equipped with full-fledged telephone functions - here, again, there is a difference from the Apple iPad, in which the cellular module is used only for packet data (Internet access). The dimensions of the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 even allow you to talk on it like on a regular “tube”, putting it to your ear (although, we agree, it still looks quite ridiculous), but no one has canceled stereo headsets, including wireless ones.

Dialer interface of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 tablet

We do not rule out that someone will even keep the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 as their only device, instead of a phone and tablet. There are people walking around with smartphones whose screens are already more than 6 inches.

By the way, typing on the virtual keyboard is most convenient in a vertical orientation, with two hands:

TouchWiz interface keyboard in portrait orientation

TouchWiz keyboard in landscape orientation

Special thanks to the manufacturer for the fact that both numbers and letters are located on one section of the keyboard - there is no need to switch again.

Performance

In terms of hardware, the Galaxy Tab S is fine. Even in AnTuTu, its performance is not too far behind the Galaxy S5 smartphone.

Performance measurement of Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 in AnTuTu Benchmark

And in the Unreal Epic Citadel benchmark, the minimum FPS values (frames per second) sometimes dropped to 15-18.

Performance measurement of Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 in Epic Citadel

Games, however, run quite well, although not as fast as we would like. One of the most “heavy” games today in terms of graphics, Frontline Commando 2, “by eye” produces 20-25 frames per second, i.e. quite “playable”, but still lacks smoothness.

Here Android (a similar problem is observed in all “retina” Android tablets, not just the Galaxy Tab S) still lags behind iOS.

Camera

Traditionally, tablets do not shine with camera quality, but indoors, it seems to us, the Galaxy Tab S has a good result. No worse than when shooting on the street. Although, even on a cloudy day, it is noticeable how narrow the dynamic range is here.

Gallery of images Clicking on a thumbnail will open a full-size image

Considering that the dimensions of the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 today are not very different from phablet smartphones, the idea of taking photographs with such a tablet no longer seems absurd to us.

Autonomy

Unfortunately, AnTuTu Tester refused to work stably on the Galaxy Tab S 8.4, and therefore we can judge the battery efficiency solely from usage experience. Well, we cannot fail to note the leap that Android tablets in general and the Samsung Galaxy Tab in particular have made - if earlier 10 hours of continuous operation of the iPad seemed something unattainable for competitors, now these are quite real numbers: indeed in video viewing mode ( depends on the codec, however), reading books or browsing the web, the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 tablet can last 8-10 hours on a single charge. But if you play, it will discharge much faster - in 5-6 hours.

Total

Fans of Samsung technology, and Android tablets in general, should be pleased: - a really good gadget, compact enough for such a screen diagonal, powerful. Well, the screen itself also pleases with color rendition, brightness and resolution. This is definitely one of the best Samsung tablets, if not the best.

As for the competitors (if we talk specifically about the model with an 8.4’’ screen), then nothing comes to mind other than the same iPad mini Retina and last year’s LG G Pad 8.3. Numerous 7-inch Android tablets are still a slightly different class, and their dimensions are not yet as impressive as those of the Galaxy Tab S 8.4.

- one of the most interesting Samsung tablets, in my opinion. Despite the similarity in characteristics with the last two top devices of the Note line, of all the flagship “tablets” of this company, it is the Samsung Galaxy Tab S that I would like to recommend for purchase to those who like tablets from this brand. Or at least one of the candidates if the best 10-inch Android tablet is being sought. This is the first Samsung tablet model to feature a Super AMOLED display, with all the unusual visual sensations that entails, and is also one of the thinnest and most compact models on the market. With a diagonal of 10.5 inches, the Galaxy Tab S is only slightly larger than the iPad Air, and in terms of price (worldwide) and positioning, its creator aims to compete with the Apple tablet. However, Samsung sees the mission of tablets in the hands of the user in a very bizarre way: not so much relaxation as work. Therefore, the company’s top devices began to receive a number of business-oriented applications out of the box. But in combination with flagship performance, high display resolution, as well as significant autonomy, this “business” bonus of the model does not harm at all.

Screen

The Galaxy Tab S display is highly sensitive and has a pixel density of 288 ppi - better than the average smartphone and more than what is required for a comfortable 10.5-inch picture. For some reason, the tablet even has support for working with gloves (!). And among the settings typical for a device with Super AMOLED, you can find several screen color modes.

Measurements with a colorimeter showed that lovers of calmer and more natural colors should choose the “Professional Photography” mode, which shows the best results (I present the results below).

Frankly, at first glance the tablet screen makes an indelible impression. I have already gotten used to the once defiantly bright, and now increasingly closer to natural, colors of AMOLED displays in flagship smartphones (and it’s almost impossible to even catch the most desperate era). Super AMOLED on a much larger diagonal... impressive. At first it even seems like a disadvantage. The color gamut is still cold, the calibration accuracy is traditionally poor for mobile displays, we are used to this good thing, the vast majority of our colleagues suffer from it. But all the same familiar things, multiplied by colorful AMOLED colors, catch the eye more strongly. The perception of the screen changes greatly when watching movies. Especially those that suffer from a lot of dark scenes with low contrast. At these moments, the Galaxy Tab S display “blooms” in all its glory and plays into the hands of the device. The darkest scenes of “Game of Thrones” become more or less distinguishable, and fantastic and spectacular films with special effects and alien colors begin to impress even more. In general, you get the feeling that you are sitting in front of such a small personal OLED TV and enjoying the picture, which is about to turn into some kind of fantastic 3D. After watching several films, the defiantly bright interface no longer seems so provocative; a habit arises of other applications (especially games), which previously frightened off with their “eye-popping” appearance. There is only one drawback - the low brightness of the display (280.27 cd/m2). But it only manifests itself when watching movies under the sun.

Autonomy

The typical result for a modern large and productive tablet in the higher price category is about 9-10 hours of video playback and many days in standby mode. Samsung Galaxy Tab S plays video at maximum display brightness for up to 9 hours with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules turned on, but GPS disabled. And lying on a shelf in standby mode loses 7-8% of charge per day. A worthy result.

Performance

It would seem that the performance of a tablet with 3 GB of RAM and Exynos Octa 5420 (for the version without LTE, like ours) or Snapdragon 800 (for the version with LTE) inside simply cannot raise questions. That’s right, performance doesn’t raise any questions: games, movies, even cooler games - all this is not a problem for Samsung’s flagship tablet. But the screen resolution of 2560x1600 pixels is still a difficult task for the device for the Android OS, and especially when paired with TouchWiz. If you jerk between applications, actively jump from tab to tab in Chrome, then the tablet interface will not move as quickly as we would like and certainly slower than its closest competitor, the Sony Xperia Tablet Z2. However, most Android users won't find the smoothness of the Galaxy Tab S interface unworthy. But people who are accustomed to a Nexus smartphone or iPad (iPhone, iPod) will be outraged. I will give this area of the tablet’s life a “good” rating.

Interface

The interface of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S is not much different from that of the Samsung Galaxy Note PRO 12.2, and I wrote about it. I consider the most important differences to be smoother operation, the appearance of a “quick button” for accessing files in the lower left corner of the desktop and the toolbar in the upper right, and the fact that the “tiles” have decreased slightly. Now you can get to them by swiping left from the main desktop. Although in the desktop settings you can change the default “main” to the one that is more necessary.

But this does not apply to “tiled” desktops. One of them is reserved for news, the other for “organizer”. You can change the page layout or remove some elements.

Toolbar and its settings.

Other settings.

Instead of the KNOX service, this model features a so-called “private mode” in which you can hide super-secret documents, images, etc.

Hancom Viewer is installed out of the box, and applications for working with various office files must be installed independently through Samsung Apps or through Hancom Update.

Despite minor changes, the TouchWiz interface, which is quite complex for uninitiated users, still looks the same. In my opinion, compared to the Galaxy Note PRO, it has become a little more convenient.

Fingerprint

For the first time for Samsung, this feature introduced in the Galaxy S5 has made its way to the flagship tablet. While I didn’t pay any attention to it while using a top-end smartphone, I had to try it on a tablet. Let me remind you that the sensor is located on the “Home” key and partially on the screen above it. Reacts when you swipe your finger, up to three fingers can be registered. In the future, the finger's responsibilities include unlocking the screen, paying with PayPal, and checking your Samsung account. In my opinion, the quality of the sensor has not yet reached the level of honorable ability to unlock the screen - it still works less often than once, with 5 unsuccessful attempts it sends you to “smoke” for 30 seconds, in fact it is less convenient than a password, and even so A “social” device like a tablet can only be a source of unnecessary trouble and discord between household members. This, of course, is only if the Galaxy Tab S tablet is used for its main tablet purpose - that is, for recreation. Those who plan to keep professional secrets in the “tablet” will have to put up with the so far mediocre performance of the sensor and, muttering curses under their breath, protect their data in this most reliable way. For the rest, I would recommend avoiding extremes for now and using less advanced methods to lock the tablet.

Camera

Samsung Galaxy Tab S is equipped with an excellent 2.1-megapixel front camera with “retouching” mode enabled by default, as well as a main 8-megapixel camera with flash, autofocus and a bunch of preset shooting modes, filters and settings. The tablet's camera shoots very quickly, approximately on par with last year's flagship smartphone from the company. Video is recorded in FullHD resolution. The quality of photography is also quite decent, it applies to all modes, including macro and HDR, but the larger the diagonal of the tablet, the more awkward you feel at the moment of shooting, and the more shyly the characters smile at his back (that is, at the camera’s peephole) frame. Below is an example of photographs (in original resolution they are available in a separate gallery on Torba).

And screenshots of the camera interface, which, however, will not surprise anyone, because over the past year the cameras in Samsung Androids have hardly changed. The tablet lacks most modes and there are no color filters - but oh well.

Competitors

Samsung Galaxy Tab S is one of the best “large” tablets of its time on the market. The model will cost approximately 8,500 thousand UAH, and taking into account the current exchange rate, the price seems quite justified. You can read more about what we think about the “large” tablet segment and which one we recommend for purchase in this material.

Bottom line

The Samsung Galaxy Tab S has a whole bunch of advantages and disadvantages and only two significant drawbacks - a predictably high price and a not very bright display. However, those who like to sit in the shade should not be too bothered by the latter, because in not very bright light, watching movies and playing games on the Retina screen of the tablet turns into a pleasant experience, especially if they contain a lot of dark and difficult-to-see scenes. The outstanding advantages of the model are its compact body with non-slip coating, low weight by the standards of a 10-inch model, flagship performance and autonomy, excellent ergonomics and the presence of all modern communication modules. Those who plan to use the tablet not only for leisure, but also for work, will find Hancome’s convenient tablet “office” and a number of other applications useful, and for the paranoid, the presence of a fingerprint scanner will come in handy. So far, this is the only tablet with this feature, although very soon new iPads are waiting for us and who knows, who knows...
