This guide is dedicated to household repairs: from power supplies, electric heating devices to refrigerators and washing machines. The book ends with a chapter on repairing equipment for satellite reception television. Electrical measuring instruments and rules for their use during repairs are considered household electrical appliances and electronics. Each chapter is accompanied by an overview of Internet resources on the topic of the chapter, and, if necessary, a notebook of circuit design.

To carry out conscious repairs, each chapter examines the design and operation of household electrical appliances. The home electric lighting network is also considered: the device correct operation, troubleshooting, repair. The book is intended for a wide range of readers, home craftsmen who are able to independently maintain the serviceability of home electrical equipment. ISBN 978-5-94387-811-4

Chapter from the book:

Features of operation
Long service life halogen lamps is not realized by itself. To do this, you must strictly follow the operating conditions. An important parameter is the temperature of the lamp. At elevated temperatures, the resource is reduced very noticeably. In general, halogen lamps heat up the bulb much more during combustion than conventional lamps. This is explained as physical processes, and small lamp sizes.
If an ordinary lamp with a power of 100 W is the size of a small pear, then a halogen lamp of the same power is no larger than a gooseberry. So tense temperature regime places high demands on all lamp elements. When handling it, you must follow certain rules.

Rule 1.
When installing or replacing halogen lamps, do not touch the bulb with your hands.
You need to use gloves or just the packaging film in which the lamp was wrapped. If you do have to touch it with your hand, you should definitely wipe the flask with a cloth moistened with alcohol or acetone, and then let it dry. If this is not done, particles of fat from your hands will high temperature baked on the glass of the flask. This place will have a different expansion coefficient, and when heated, a crack may appear and the lamp may fail.

Rule 2.
Regularly, about once every six months (especially for low-voltage lamps), it is necessary to remove and wipe the light bulbs, and if necessary, clean the legs from carbon deposits.
It is also necessary to clean the holes in the cartridges. This is due to the fact that the contact area of the leg with the socket terminal is extremely small, tens of times smaller than that of a conventional lamp with a screw base, and the currents at equal power are the same for 220 V lamps and 20 times higher for 12 V lamps. High load contacts increases the temperature of the lamp, causing sparking and burnout of the socket.

Rule 3.
If the lamp's protective glass breaks, you will not be able to replace it with a piece of ordinary window glass.
Ordinary glass will not withstand the heat flow emanating from a halogen lamp. In most halogen lamps the lamp is located very close to protective glass. In this way, the miniature size of the lamp and high decorative properties are achieved. For example, for home chandeliers with ordinary lamps their number rarely exceeds 12 pieces, and halogen chandeliers can have about 50 bulbs.
Halogen lamps do not have uniformity in supply voltage; in household lamps, lamps with voltages of 220 and 12 V are most often used, and 6 and 24 V are also used. When using lamps with a voltage different from the mains voltage, a transformer is required. Transformers have considerable weight, volume and price. Availability of a transformer - main drawback lamps with halogen lamps.
