Recently I was asked how to create an image gallery on WordPress and I decided to record a video and write an article on this topic. Video above, article below :)

We will create a gallery without installing additional plugins, only using the WordPress engine.

How to Create a Gallery on WordPress

You can insert a gallery into existing pages or posts on your site, or create new ones.

I'll take as an example a page from my test site and post a gallery on home page. So, let's move on to editing the page, find the place where we will place our gallery and place the mouse cursor in this place. Next, click on the “Add media file” button

After this we have two options:

1. Create a gallery from those images that have already been uploaded to our file library;

2. Upload new files.

Because I don’t have any files in my library, I will upload new ones, so click on the “Upload files” button, then click on the “Select files” button. Find it on your computer required images, select them (you can select all of them at once) and click the “Open” button.

I prepared 4 images of cars in advance.

Our images have loaded. Here I have highlighted 3 important points with numbers:

1. Images marked with a checkmark are part of our gallery. If you want to exclude any image from the gallery, just hover your mouse over the check mark, a minus sign will appear, click on it.

As you can see, we have added 4 images and just below there are also small copies of our cars and on the left it says that we have 4 images selected. This is convenient when you have many images in your gallery at once. You don't need to count them manually, just look at the hint below and you will immediately understand how many pictures you are adding to the gallery.

2. The image surrounded by a blue frame and marked with a blue checkmark is active. This means that we can edit the parameters of this image. You can switch between images and change the settings for each one.

3. “Create a new gallery” button. After all the settings are made, you can click on this button to complete the gallery creation.

Let's move on to the final settings of our gallery. Study the slide carefully; below I give explanations for each point:

1. You can sign each photo; to do this, simply place your mouse cursor in the field under the image and type the desired text.

2. By clicking on the cross above the image, you can exclude it from the gallery.

3. Block with gallery settings:

The first parameter in the settings is the link. Here we can specify where the site visitor will be redirected when clicking on an image from the gallery. I will not consider the “Attachment Page” option - it is used quite rarely, you can experiment on your own.

We are more interested in the “Media file” option. If we select it, then when we click on the thumbnail from the image gallery, a larger copy of our picture will open.

If you select the “No” option, then nothing will happen when you click on the image.

The second parameter is the number of columns. Here we can choose how many columns will be in our gallery. I can’t tell you which number you need to choose, here you need to experiment on your own and choose the option that suits you. Let's leave it at 3 for now, and then we'll see.

The third parameter is the order of the images. Everything is simple here: if you check the box, the images will be placed in random order, and not the way you placed them.

Important point! You can change the order of images simply by dragging them with your mouse!

The fourth parameter is size. There are 4 options: thumbnail, medium, large and full. Here again, choose at your discretion. Generally, the sizes "large" and "full" are not used. Try the “thumbnail” and “medium” options and find the one that suits you. I'll leave the "thumbnail" option.

4. “Insert gallery” button. After all the settings are made, click it.

Our gallery is located in the text of the page. Don't forget to click the "Update" button after editing the page.

After that, we go to the page that we edited and see what we got. The gallery is ready!

Improving the gallery on WordPress

Now click on any of the pictures in the gallery. As you can see, the pictures open on the entire page and we do not have the ability to return to the site page using the menu. This is very inconvenient and ugly.

At the beginning of the article, I stated that we would not use plugins when creating the gallery, and I kept my word - our gallery is ready, and we did not use a single plugin.

But we can improve our gallery, and for this we need to install one plugin. It's called Fancybox. This plugin does not require configuration, you just need to install and activate it.

After installing the Fancybox plugin, refresh the gallery page and see how the images now display when clicked.

Agree, it has become much more convenient to view pictures from the gallery.

Now let's look at another important issue.

How to edit a gallery on WordPress.

It's very easy to edit the gallery you created. Let's move on to editing the post or page on which the gallery is located, find it and click on the gallery with the mouse. The gallery will stand out gray and two small icons will appear at the top: edit and delete.

The pencil icon is editing, click on it and go to the gallery settings. We change what we need and click the “Update gallery” button. After this, be sure to refresh the post or page you are editing. Gallery has been updated.
