Five Finder secrets for advanced users. How to open a new Finder tab. Displaying file paths

IN macOS Mojave(installation instructions) there is a new one Finder function called Quick Actions, which allows you to quickly edit files without having to open them.

To see the available Quick Actions, you need to activate the preview pane in Finder. To do this, open a Finder window and select “View” → “Show Preview Window” from the menu or press ⇧Shift + ⌘Cmd + P.

Quick actions with images, video and audio

The Quick Actions option is located in the lower right corner of the Finder window, directly below the preview of the selected file, and also in the context menu when you right-click.

The quick actions that can be performed on a file depend on the nature of the file itself. For example, if you are dealing with an image, clicking on “Rotate Left” will rotate the image counterclockwise. Clicking on “Add Markup” will open a Quick View window with related image editing tools.

When you select two or more images in the Finder, the Add Markup button turns into Create PDF (details), which allows you to combine the selected images into one document.

When you select a QuickTime-compatible video or audio file, a Trim option appears instead of the Add Markup button. If you select this option, a Quick View window will open with tools for trimming the file.

How to Customize the Quick Actions Menu in Finder

In Quick Actions there is a “More...” option.

Click on it and select “Customize”, which will open the “Extensions” section in “ System settings" Here you can choose additional actions, which can be added to Finder previews.

The available actions depend on installed applications and pre-installed scripts on your Mac. Apple encourages developers to implement support in the apps they create. more quick action carried out through Quick Actions.

Quickly return to the initial (home) folder

If you're lost in the Finder and want to quickly get back to your home folder (with your username), use the keyboard shortcut ⌘Cmd + ⇧Shift + H.

Quickly delete files from Finder

It is not necessary to drag and drop necessary files and folders from Finder to . More convenient way: choose unnecessary files mouse (when selecting multiple files, hold down ⌘Cmd or ⇧Shift), and then press ⌘Cmd + Delete. By the way: if you immediately want to finally and irrevocably remove all files from the Recycle Bin, without even going into it, press ⌘Cmd + ⇧Shift + Delete(window of course Finder must be active).

Customize the Finder toolbar

Open Finder, from the menu bar select ViewCustomize the toolbar. Drag to the top panel Finder new shortcuts and delete unnecessary ones. Finder is a system file manager operating system Apple Mac OS. It is part of the operating system and is similar to Windows Explorer. It organizes and displays in various types files and folders located on computers and any external media connected to it. You can also use Finder to search and organize information. This is what the Finder window looks like:

Your folders and documents are stored here, you can view, drag and change them here.

There is a menu at the top of the screen:

This menu is in every program you open.

First point (1) in the form of an apple - unchanged.

Second point (2) changes depending on what application or program you open. The name of the application or program is written here. In the picture we have a Finder, therefore, the tab is labeled with the appropriate name.

If you click on it, you will see this window:

When you click on a line "About the program", a window will pop up containing brief information about the program that is on this moment you have it open.

The next line is "Settings". You can open them either using the top menu or using a keyboard shortcut "Command+"(Command and comma). When you open it, you will see this window:

There are 4 tabs here: "Basic", "Tags", "Sidebar" and "Add-ons"

In the “Basic” tab (it is exactly shown in the picture) you can configure what you need to show on the desktop. Namely: hard disks, external drives, i.e. if you connect a flash drive or some other external media, it appears in both the Finder and on your desktop.

Next tab . Their standard names can be changed, i.e., instead of "Red" you can write "Important documents". They are very easy to use.

If you want to mark any object, you simply select it, click on it right click mouse and select the color you want. If you want to cancel the command, then click on the cross, which is located in the circle of the tag (if you move the pointer to the tag).

Next comes the tab

It is configured in the same way as , i.e. by checking the boxes. The box next to which line you check will be displayed in your menu on the left.

The next tab is

Here you can configure the search function. Those. If you specify a search in the Finder window, you can specify where to search: either on your entire computer or in current folder, or in the previous search area.

The next menu item is “File”(3)

Here you can open a New Finder Window, create New folder, New smart folder. – this is the search folder. How to set it up? Open a smart folder, then tap the sign «+» in the right top corner. Then you can set a search based on certain criteria. If you choose “By type” >> “Pdf”, then all documents will be displayed in your folder pdf format on your Mac, because it was specified by the search area.

You can also open various files different ways. You simply select the file you want in top menu press File -> Open in the program.

The computer itself will determine what can be used to open this file and will offer you possible options. IN in this case in the picture you see how to open a media file.

If you click File > Properties, then this window will open:

Here you can find out the file type, its size, where it is located, when it was created, when it was modified, its name and extension, etc. You can also compress the file by selecting the menu File > Compress. And immediately send this file by mail, you don’t need to archive it or do anything else.

You can also duplicate files, i.e. create a regular copy. To do this, click menu File > Duplicate and you will have a copy of your file.

Using a keyboard shortcut Command+Y or keys Space, you can use the function "Quick view", i.e., by pressing these keys, your picture will open immediately, you do not need to turn on any programs. This doesn't just apply to pictures. You can open any text files, pdf files, presentations.

If you click Show Path Bar or Show Status Menu, these commands will appear at the bottom of the window:

Here you can customize the toolbar.

If you want one of the icons to appear on your toolbar, then simply drag it with the mouse. Conversely, if you want to delete it, drag it back and click “Done.”

You can also add, already familiar to us in Safari, the “Tab Bar”. To do this, go to View -> Show Tab Bar, or keyboard shortcut "Cmd+T".

Point 6 – “Transition”

Here you can quickly go to any item from the list: My Files, Documents, Desktop, etc. You can also see recently used folders.

Point 7 “Window”

Here you can change the scale of your window and configure it so that it is convenient to work with it. Below you can see what you currently have open in side menu.

Point 8 - “Help”

At this point it is very convenient to look for any settings. Moreover, OS X will automatically show the location of the item you want to find. For example, write Settings, and everything will immediately become clear to you.

Now briefly about the Finder sidebar.

Wi-Fi file transfer technology developed by by Apple, and presented by her in the operating room Mac environment OS X Lion. Now you don't need to know network settings. OS X itself will find other Macs on the network, and to copy files you just need to drag it to the desired computer.

Example: you have two Macs and the task is to copy a file from one to the other.

Open Finder->AirDrop on both computers. All available Macs on the network will appear in front of you.

In this case, your Mac is on the bottom, the second one on top.

Click Send. And on the second computer Save

Programs– respectively, all programs that are installed on your computer.

Desktop- what is on the Desktop.

Documentation– a folder intended for storing documents.

You won't be able to close Finder completely (as evidenced by the small dot under the icon), but you can restart it.

There are three ways to restart Finder:

1 way- this is restarting Finder through the Dock ( the bottom panel tools on the desktop). To do this you need to click Option key(on the keyboard it is labeled “alt”) and right-click on the Finder icon in the Doc panel and select “Restart”

Method 2- if the program does not respond, then you can click on the apple icon (upper left corner) and select “Force quit”. You will see a window with everyone open applications, from which you can choose what you need to complete.

Today we will look at the basic settings Finder Mac OS X. Collides with it Mac user OS X much more often than with any other Apple utility.

If you don’t find fault, the default settings are quite suitable, but we will not, like everyone else, try to make it even more convenient to use. This will help us save a lot of time and get rid of useless extra mouse clicks. During the introduction, we will also come across hotkeys that will help us a lot in some situations.

Finder Basic Settings

So what is Finder? Finder is part of the Mac OS operating system. Which is analogue of Explorer Windows (we won’t argue about who got it first), it organizes and displays in various views files and folders located on the computer and any external media connected to it. You can also use Finder to search and organize information.

The main Finder settings can be accessed through the top panel of OS X, when active window Finder.

Once in the settings window, several tabs become available:

In the first tab "General" we can configure what should be displayed on the desktop. And what folder will open at startup. By default, the Finder is set to “My Files,” which doesn’t seem very convenient to me when working, because I still have to go to the desired section later. So I choose top point in the drop-down list with my name account and the next time I log in, I get straight to the selection of a section or media.

But we can’t stop there and immediately change the type of ordering available when we right-click on the Finder window. By setting to sort by type, we get this window, which is already several times more convenient for me. In this case, such a display will be saved only for this item; when moving to other partitions, the order will be standard, which is also quite convenient when there is a lot of various files and folders.

IN next tab We can configure tags that can be assigned to files and folders. You can also use these tags for quick access from the Finder sidebar. Each file and folder can be assigned not just one, but several tags, which makes the search as flexible as possible.

In this window, everything is standard “+” - add a new one, “-” - delete accordingly. In the settings, you can choose your own color for each tag; unfortunately, the number of colors is limited; nothing of your own was provided to the user.

With side checkmarks you indicate which tags will appear in the Finder sidebar.

The next tab is responsible for setting up the display directly in the sidebar. Here we can choose what we want to see in it, and what can be removed from it.

In the add-ons tab, we have access to settings for warnings and in which folder the Finder will search. Will it search throughout the entire Mac or just in the current folder? It’s also quite convenient when you have great amount files.

How to open a new Finder tab

Beginning with Mac versions OS X Mavericks users now have access to tabs in the Finder window. Agree, this is much more convenient than a cluttered desktop with many open windows.

There are two ways to open a new tab:

  1. Right-click on the folder and select open in new tab;
  2. Command + T for hotkey lovers.

When copying, you can simply drag it from the folder to another tab, thereby opening the window where we want to place the file.

Toggle the Finder sidebar on or off

There are times when the Finder window's appearance becomes quite unusual - it simply lacks side navigation. This situation can be done either by us accidentally or when making any changes to the main Finder settings.

You can solve this problem through the top menu item by turning on the sidebar display

But when the panel disappeared randomly, the show side menu items are not available for activation. Interestingly, the hotkeys indicated in the paragraph also refuse to work. In this case simple solution turns out to be a keyboard shortcut Alt+Cmd+T.

WITH top panel display and arrangement you can familiarize yourself with.

So what do we see most often when we work on a Mac? Some use Word/Excel, others Final Cut or Photoshop, but we all, without exception, see and interact with Finder! And it is it, or its elements, that we see most often, and therefore by properly organizing the work of the Mac OS shell, you will achieve an increase in your productivity on the Mac!

Let's get started! The first thing I always do is go to Finder Preferences and make some changes there. By the way, I do this on any Mac, even not my own, and the user usually doesn’t notice the difference in the little things, but they exist :)

To do this, click on Finder in the upper left corner and select Settings there (you can also click on the combination CMD+,). And here I start to conjure:

Basic:

— Show on the Desktop — check the boxes that I need = all the boxes;

- Show in new Finder windows - select yours home folder, although everyone can choose the folder they use most. I strongly recommend removing “My Files”, because... They can cause a lot of confusion and are not conducive to optimizing your Mac experience!

— I leave other parameters unchanged...

If you use them, then in this menu you can sort them by importance or change their values.

Sidebar:

— Favorites — I immediately exclude the My files item from the side menu, because I don’t need it, although if you use this tab at least sometimes (which, really, tell me when and why?) you can leave it...

General access— due to my specifics, I periodically need to use these points, so I have them turned on. Moreover, if you have more than 1 Mac computer, then you can leave them for simple file transfer. Plus, with the AirDrop feature, it will be an easy way to transfer files from one Mac to another.

— Devices — I try to always see all connected devices in the side menu, and this helps me, no matter what program I’m in, to immediately see all flash drives, disks, etc....

— Tags — check the box for quick access to popular tags.

Additions:

In my case, I leave all the checkboxes unchanged and the “When performing a search” item is also unchanged.

I would like to pay special attention to the item “Emptying the Trash irreversibly” - a very insidious option. The fact is that if you install it, then the deleted objects from the recycle bin are not just deleted, but also random bits are written on top of this data so that the information cannot be restored, but the speed of emptying the recycle bin drops many times! This is needed extremely rarely, so do not enable this checkbox.

After we're done with the basics Finder settings, I click on View in the menu bar and turn on the “Show status menu” item. Thanks to this item, in almost any Finder window you can see free place on the disk (or connected drive if you opened it in a new window). A very convenient thing, so as not to make unnecessary movements to view the free space.

Well, I think I'm done with Finder. I don't make any other changes after installing the OS. And in general, Apple thought well about Mac OS in order to minimize outside interference, but as you can see, they are still needed :)
