Currently, one of the main directions for improving the quality characteristics of a PC is expanding its telecommunications capabilities. Exist various ways such expansion, including those related to giving the computer functions of radio and television reception. And if computer television reception, as a rule, implies the obligatory blocking of other tasks, then the presence of a radio reception function allows you to combine work on the computer with listening to your favorite radio station.

Over the past few years, a number of manufacturing companies have developed various models of computer radios specifically designed to work under the control of a personal computer. Structurally, these receivers are made either in the form of boards inserted into the ISA or PCI slot of the computer, or in the form of separate modules connected to the computer via COM ports, LPT or PCMCIA, if we are talking about a laptop. Thanks to this solution, it is possible to high speed exchange of information between the radio receiver and the computer, and the lack of additional external organs control allows you to make the receiver light and compact.

The domestic market currently offers various models of computer radio receivers: from the simplest narrow-band FM tuners to all-wave receivers that meet professional requirements for radio reception.

Existing models of computer FM tuners are designed for listening to broadcast stations in the so-called FM range at short distances from radio transmitters. These receivers are either separate ISA or PCI cards, or they are integrated into sound card or TV tuner boards. Currently, separate FM tuner boards are practically no longer produced, since using one slot only to provide amateur FM radio reception today seems wasteful. Manufacturers various models computer FM tuners are from Creative Labs, MediaForte, Averm, Leadtek and a number of others. In the class of professional computer receivers on Russian market The most widely represented radio receivers are from Winradio Communications, which currently produces three types of computer receivers: WR-1000, WR-1550 And WR-3150. To expand signal processing capabilities with other hardware or software, external models have an acoustic output on the rear panel.

The delivery kits for all models of computer radios from Winradio Communications described above include branded software management. It should be noted that software for these radios there are no significant differences for internal and external models. There are three types of programs:

  • basic software;
  • additional software;
  • software according to specification XRS.

The basic software is the main program for controlling the operation of the receiver and solves the following tasks: sets the tuning frequency and operating mode of the receiver, sets scanning parameters and displays its results, and maintains a database of operating results. A program is designed to control receivers of the 1000 and 1500 series WiNRADiO, for 3100 series receivers - program Spectrum Monitor. Additional software is used to expand the functionality of the receiver. Program DIGITAL SUITE allows for analysis of time and frequency characteristics signal, signal processing various standards, and also write to HDD audio signals in WAV format. To attract independent developers, Winradio Communications has developed an open software specification, XRS (eXtensible Radio Specification), which includes a set of procedures with detailed documentation. This specification allows skilled programmers using C/C++ or Pascal to quickly develop their own application programs for company radios Winradio Communications without going into details software interfaces receivers WiNRADiO. Such programs are integrated into the basic program and work under its control with all types of radio receivers. This specification can be obtained from the company's website www.xrs.winradio.com Winradio Communications after pre-registration. The main advantages of creating software in accordance with XRS specifications are guaranteed compatibility with all subsequent versions of the basic software of the receivers WiNRADiO and the possibility of parallel operation of several XRS-programs simultaneously.

It should be noted that there are other possibilities for creating your own programs to control the operation of receivers WiNRADiO. Using a dynamic data exchange protocol Winradio DDE, the programmer has access to various receiver control functions and can issue control commands from any application that supports the protocol DDE. If simultaneous operation of proprietary control programs is undesirable WiNRADiO or Spectrum Monitor and the program being developed, it is possible to control the receiver using various functions libraries wrapi32.dll, included in the standard software package supplied with the receiver. Another model of computer receivers supplied on domestic market, - company radio receiver ICOM IC-PCR1000. His appearance together with the antenna included in the basic delivery set is shown in Fig. 5 .

The receiver connects to the computer via a standard serial port. Its radio reception range is 500 kHz-300 MHz. The digital AFC system built into the receiver allows you to eliminate frequency drift in FM mode at bandwidths of 6 and 15 kHz and increase reception stability at frequencies above 1000 MHz. Interface control program PCR1000 for computer radio IC-PCR1000(see Fig. 6.) is designed in the form of several independent windows for controlling the main modes of the receiver, which can be placed anywhere on the computer screen.

Possibility of creating own applications to control the IC-PCR1000 receiver can be implemented by using appropriate software drivers. Various software for this computer radio can be found at www.icomamerica.com.

Summarizing what was written above, we can draw the following conclusion: the existing the lineup computer receivers will be constantly expanded through the creation of both amateur and professional means radio reception.
