Ixperia model range. Which Sony Xperia Smartphone is better? Review of the model range. Sony Xperia X series

Sony Xperia smartphones. Sony is a popular Japanese company specializing in the production of high-tech products. The most popular among Sony smartphones is the Xperia line, which includes more than 50 devices of various types.

How the Xperia line was created and developed

The Xperia line was created in 2008. It was originally planned that it would include only smartphones with the most advanced characteristics. The first Xperia smartphone is the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 (a merger between Sony and Ericsson, which existed until 2011), released in 2008. The device was running Windows Mobile. A total of two phones were released on this OS, after which the company switched to Android OS.

The first smartphone running Android is Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. This model became the basis for many other devices. The signature X10 design was used for the next few years. After the demise of the Sony Ericsson association, the Sony Mobile division began producing phones.

Recently, Sony has continued the tradition and released very stylish smartphones, I have already reviewed on, and. You can check it out.

Xperia Z line

We should also highlight the Z series smartphones with flagship characteristics, which were produced from 2013 to 2015. A distinctive feature of this series of smartphones from Sony is dust and moisture resistance, as well as powerful hardware. Starting with the Z1, there were two versions of the phone to choose from: regular and compact. The compact version had the same advanced characteristics. The difference was solely in the size of the display and the overall dimensions of the device.

Sony Xperia X series

The Xperia Z line was replaced by the X series. Smartphones from the Xperia X model range were produced from 2016 to 2018. Almost all phones that are included in this series have a minimal number of differences from the Zet series. Each phone is based on a monoblock case. All flagships were also produced in compact format while maintaining water resistance.

Z3 became the 4th smartphone in the series. In 2014, Sony introduced 2 advanced phones at once. The Z3 was introduced a short period of time after the Z2 went on sale, with minimal differences between the smartphones.

Design and appearance.

The appearance of the phone is its main feature. The front and back panels of the device are made of glass, and the frame is made of metal. Factory protective films are applied to both sides. The Z3 was sold in 4 colors, including emerald and copper, as well as classic white and black.

The device is quite large in size. There are fairly wide frames above and below the screen. Despite this, the phone looks collected and without unnecessary details. All frequently used connectors are protected from the negative effects of liquids without the use of any plugs. The device control buttons are made of wear-resistant metal.

Screen.

The model has a 5.2-inch IPS screen with an aspect ratio of 16:9 and FullHD resolution. There are proprietary technologies of Sony Bravia and Triluminos. Thanks to this, the display brightness is 690 cd/m2.

Among the main advantages of the display are:

  • wide viewing angles;
  • high density;
  • good color rendition.

Thanks to the high resolution, the screen density is 424 pixels per inch. Even upon closer inspection, the picture looks as clear as possible. Not a single pixel is visible during everyday use of the smartphone.

For many people, a large screen has become an advantage, but Sony has also taken care of people who need small-sized devices. The Z3 Compact version is equipped with a 4.6-inch screen with HD resolution, as well as similar technical components.

Technical features.

The Xperia Z3 smartphone is equipped with the same processor and video accelerator as the Xperia Z2. The Snapdragon 801 with higher frequencies relative to the processor in the Z2 is responsible for performance. Out of the box, the phone is available with the Android 4.4.4 operating system, on top of which a proprietary Sony shell is installed. The phone was produced in two configurations: with 32 and 64 GB of internal memory. Both versions have 3 GB of RAM.

Among the features that are available only to Sony devices is the ability to remotely connect to PlayStation consoles. In addition, the phone is able to synchronize and charge from a proprietary docking station.

Camera.

Xperia Z3 has an advanced camera with a resolution of 20.7 megapixels. To obtain the highest quality images, an Exmor RS matrix is installed. Among the camera's features are the ability to shoot in 4k, as well as support for slow motion. The best quality photographs are taken in daylight. At night, getting a high-quality photo becomes difficult due to the large aperture of the camera. The front camera has a resolution of 2.2 megapixels. It is suitable for taking everyday selfies, as well as video calling through special applications.

At one time, the Z3 was a rather controversial smartphone, as it had minimal differences from its predecessor. Therefore, people who owned an Xperia Z2 did not exchange it for a new model. Despite the advanced characteristics, the phone did not conquer the market, but at the same time it provided the opportunity to purchase a flagship with a unique design and proprietary features.

The Z5 is the latest device in the Z series, which was introduced in 2015. It uses Sony's signature Omni-Balance design, which can be seen throughout the Z series. The phone also has some individual features.

Design and appearance.

To create the smartphone, almost the same materials were used as usual, but they were processed in a special way. The back is made of polished frosted glass. This gave the smartphone a completely new and unique look. The information is engraved on the matte back panel. At the front there are stereo speakers, a front camera and sensors.

The changes also affected the side frames. Now they are made of matte plastic. Protective corners made of polycarbonate appeared on the sides. They not only give the smartphone a special look, but also protect it from losing its original appearance. The corners are resistant to scratching and mechanical damage. The device is available in 4 colors: black, green, gray and gold. Thanks to the matte finish, each color scheme looks unusual.

Screen.

The simple version of Z5 has a 5.2-inch FullHD display. It has all the proprietary functions from Sony. Among the features of the display, one can highlight the 2.5D glass installed on top. It allows you to create smoother edges on the sides.

The most interesting display was installed on the Z5 Premium smartphone. Its main feature was the high resolution of 3840x2160. This made it possible to obtain a pixel density value of 806 ppi. At the same time as the simple Z5, a Compact version with a 4.6-inch screen was provided.

Technical features.

The smartphone is powered by the Snapdragon 810 processor and the Adreno 410 graphics accelerator. The phone was sold with 32 GB of internal memory and 3 GB of RAM. You can increase the built-in memory using a flash drive, which is inserted into the MicroSD slot. Xperia Z5 is dust and water resistant.

Among the main technical features of the Z5 are a fingerprint scanner, as well as the presence of 18-watt fast charging. Instead of the classic round unlock button, this device uses a special fingerprint sensor. An ultrasonic sensor allows fingerprint unlocking. The sensor works quickly and allows you to increase the security of your phone.

Camera.

The smartphone has a 23-megapixel main and 5-megapixel front camera. Among the capabilities of the main camera are shooting in 4k, a large number of artistic effects, a modified automatic mode at the software level, and an AR effect.

The front camera features a wide-angle lens that allows you to fit more objects into the frame.

The Xperia Z5 was a great example of maintaining a unique design while adding new distinctive features. The most advanced technological solutions were used in the smartphone.

Xperia XZ is a flagship released in 2016. It is a continuation of the X series, but at the same time it contains the unique features of the Z line. The smartphone turned out to be quite balanced and attractive.

Design and appearance.

When creating the design of the Xperia XZ, previous and completely new developments were used. The XZ features a new design concept called Loop Surface. Its essence lies in the smooth flow of the front panel into the back. There are no corners between the front and back of the smartphone. All edges are rounded. This affects not only the appearance of the device, but also the ease of use.

Metal was used as the material to create the body. The phone is available in 3 colors: dark brown, dark blue and silver.

Screen.

The phone uses an IPS screen with FullHD resolution. The display diagonal is 5.2 inches. The XZ has slightly smaller bezels at the top and bottom. Thanks to this, it was possible to slightly reduce the dimensions of the device. When creating the screen, the same proprietary technologies were used as when creating TVs from Sony.

The screen has natural color reproduction and a fairly high maximum brightness of 630 cd/m2. In the XZ, automatic brightness adjustment works much better, which accurately selects the required value in the shortest possible time.

Technical features.

The smartphone out of the box runs Android version 6.0. The Snapdragon 820 processor with Adreno 530 graphics accelerator is responsible for the performance of the device in games and applications. The processor in the phone has not only become more powerful, but also more energy efficient. Thanks to this, the device’s battery lasts for a longer period of time. Xperia XZ is available with 32 and 64 GB memory. Both versions have 3 GB of RAM. Gorilla Glass 4 is used to protect the screen. In addition, the phone is protected according to IP 65/68 dust and water resistance standards.

The USB Type-C connector is used to charge the phone. The phone supports fast charging. When using fast charging, you can charge your smartphone to 60 percent in about 30 minutes. A fast charging adapter is included with the device. To increase the battery life on a single charge, you can use Sony's proprietary technology called Stamina.

Camera.

The smartphone has a 23-megapixel main camera with laser and phase detection autofocus. The main camera allows you to take fairly high-quality daytime photographs. Digital stabilization has also appeared, which improves video quality. Laser autofocus helps you take photos with virtually no wait time. The smartphone panel has a separate button for shooting.

The front camera has a resolution of 13 megapixels. Among its features are the presence of a wide-angle lens and the ability to shoot fairly high-quality video. Preset automatic modes allow you to take good selfies in any light.

Sony Xperia XZ is an excellent continuation of the X line. The phone has a lot of innovations, as well as advanced characteristics. Its main feature is its excellent appearance. The use of metal made it possible to give the smartphone a premium feel, as well as durability. The device turned out to be resistant to adverse external influences.

The Sony brand is one of the leading brands in the global technology market. It is not surprising that Sony smartphones are gaining more and more popularity among lovers of modern functional gadgets.

Smartphones from Sony - the perfect balance of price and quality

The Sony Xperia line of smartphones are modern and functional devices with an interesting design and . This system is one of the most used OS in many types of equipment, which makes it possible to use the technical capabilities of the gadget to its full potential.

Despite the fact that until recently the production of smartphones was far from the main focus of the Sony concern, over the past few years this brand has been quite successful in the production of these gadgets.

The main quality indicators for any smartphone are several basic characteristics:

Sony Mobile (formerly known as Sony Ericsson Mobile) is a division of electronics giant Sony Corporation.

Xperia is a unique model range of the company, which was initially released running Windows Mobile OS.

Then technical management decided to switch to .

At the moment, this line occupies a strong niche in today's market.

Some of the company's smartphones may have the advantage of being waterproof and moisture-resistant.

Sony Xperia smartphones - all models

All Xperia models

The Japanese giant is one of the world's largest manufacturers of mobile devices; every year they completely update their line.

Their sleek, sophisticated design and serious technical characteristics attract new fans year after year.

Over the past few years, this manufacturer has often experimented with its new products, delighting its followers with both premium flagships and very budget models.

Everyone could find a sample for every taste and budget.

In the last 2 years alone, the company has launched 12 models on the market. Not to mention the lighter versions.

At the beginning of 2016, at MWC 2016, the company announced that it was completely relaunching the line of gadgets beloved by many.

According to the company, Xperia (which stands for experience) smartphones should provide users with a unique experience of interaction between gadgets and their owners.

It is these updated devices that our review will be devoted to.

First, let's divide them by year. Separately, it is worth noting that we will not separate them by colors and modifications with different memory capacities.

Sony Xperia XZ Premium

Those expecting a revolution in XZ Premium design will be disappointed.

Over the years, designs have become more refined, and loyal fans have realized the high value of corporate recognition. This is not just a recognizable trademark, it is a brand.

The company has certainly focused on the details for the new XZ Premium.

The main innovation is support for 960fps video playback.

This frame rate is still out of reach for many manufacturers.

Not many people at MWC could boast of this advantage.

To manage such a high video frame rate, which clearly outshines the performance of other devices and even last year's own flagship 4K action camera, it was necessary to install the FDR-X3000.

This is the patented know-how of the digital imaging department.

Cameras such as the RX1000 IV are famous for its use. It's all about its memory and array of sensors that allow it to capture images faster.

XZ Premium is equipped with the most powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC.

At first glance, the XZ "Premium" looks similar to last year's Xperia XZ. To give it a more expensive look, engineers used .

Moving on to the specifications, the XZ Premium features a 5.5-inch Triluminos HDR display with 4K (2160x3840) resolution.

The gadget is powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 (Gigabit LTE speed is achieved through the use of an X16 LTE modem).

Also installed in the device is an Adreno 540 GPU video chip and 4 GB. 64 GB of internal memory, which is expandable via microSD cards (up to 256 GB).

The front of the device has a 13-megapixel camera with a 1/3.06-inch Exmor RS sensor. The phone OS is Android 7.0 Nougat, the battery capacity is 3230mAh.

In fact, we can talk about this excellent flagship for a very long time.

On the Internet there are photographs of copies that showed more than 150 thousand points in the Antutu test. This is a very impressive result.

Without a doubt, this flagship will excite the minds of users of modern gadgets for a long time.

Surely it will be compared with devices with similar characteristics. But we can say with confidence that at the time of writing this review it is the best.

Smaller version of XZ. Both devices use the same design with a flat top and bottom, and rounded sides.

On the right side of the device is the power button, which also doubles as a fingerprint scanner.

The XZs is equipped with a 5.2-inch screen (1080x1920 pixels) with Triluminos technology and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor with Adreno 510 GPU and 4 GB of RAM.

Internal memory is 32 GB and 64 GB, expandable thanks to a slot (up to 256 GB).

Sony Xperia Z1

It looks like with the release of this smartphone, the Japanese giant may have finally learned its lesson. This time they were the first to release a smartphone with a 5″ diagonal and 1080p support.

The specification makes it clear that the Z model is half a millimeter larger than, say, the Samsung Galaxy S III. This was a technical necessity; the smartphone has a fairly powerful battery.

The Quad-core 1.5 GHz Krait chipset is fully capable of handling all these pixels.

Summing up this smartphone, I would like to say once again that Sony is a broadly oriented company.

By releasing their product line, they try to fully cover the market.

These are practically the perfect premium mobile devices at this point, offering everything you would expect from a flagship phone.

If you haven’t owned a smartphone from this Japanese giant before, you should think about purchasing one.

conclusions

Moving on to the 2016 line of smartphones, it became clear that it is easier to divide them into subgroups.

In our review we will not dwell on them in as much detail as on the representatives of 2017. We will simply provide comparative tables with the most significant characteristics.

  • X, X Compact
  • XA Ultra and XA

It's much easier to compare X and X Compact using a table.

In addition to the obvious difference in size, the characteristics listed below allow you to see a more complete picture.

Also, many users may be interested in a more complete comparison of the smartphone line.

Considering that over the past year as many as 12 devices of this line entered the market, I would like to compare only the most remarkable ones in terms of characteristics.

Comparing the E5 and Z1, we came to the conclusion that they are similar in many ways.

The E5 wins only in terms of battery capacity; in terms of other characteristics, the Z1 turned out to be more powerful, and we’ll talk about it later.

Indeed, in fact, if we consider the entire model range, it is easy to get confused in the variety of processors and other hardware.

The Japanese manufacturer Sony produces very cool smartphones. Of course, everyone knows about iPhones, Samsung, Xiaomi and Huawei, since these brands aggressively advertise their products and promote them in Russia. Sony's advertising campaigns are softer, but the quality and functionality of smartphones is no worse, and sometimes better. Next are the TOP smartphones from Sony in descending order of price, that is, on top are the most expensive.

1st place – Sony Xperia XZ3

The latest flagship of the Japanese brand at the end of 2018 - beginning of 2019 and the best smartphone in the line. Out of the box, the device comes with Android 9.0 OS, is equipped with a waterproof case and a 6-inch OLED display. Resolution – Full HD+ with a pixel density of 537 ppi.

Inside is a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory. If this is not enough, you can insert a flash drive with a capacity of up to 512 GB. The current set of connectors and interfaces is included: NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi 5 GHz, USB Type-C. The smartphone also has a 3330 mAh battery with support for wireless and fast charging.

Of particular note is the rear camera with a resolution of 19 megapixels and a small f/2 aperture, which is practically not found in high-end phones. However, it is Sony, the leading manufacturer of camera sensors used by Huawei, Xiaomi and other brands.

Sony is a developer that doesn't follow trends and does what it thinks is best. The result is cool phones without notches, two cameras and thin frames. Specifically, the Xperia XZ3 is made in an elegant case with frames that allow you to comfortably hold the phone in your hand - obviously technology makes it possible to make the frames thinner, but there is no need for this. Plus, it uses cool speakers, a front camera, and vibration.

Based on reviews, we highlight the disadvantages:

  • There is no headphone jack - you need to use an adapter from USB Type-C to 3.5 mm jack.
  • A slot for 2 SIM cards and a separate slot for a flash drive.
  • A battery that lasts 7-8 hours under heavy load. GSMArena data: 26:40 hours of calls; 10:30 hours of video playback at 200 nits brightness.

2nd place – Xperia XZ2 Compact

It is obvious from the name that this model represents a “compact” version of the TOP flagship XZ2. For some reason, it was the younger smartphone that did better and was positively received by the public.

The phone came out earlier and received Android 8.0 out of the box, water protection, and a tray for 2 SIM cards. There is also a 5-inch IPS matrix with Full HD+ resolution, a 19 MP camera with f/2 aperture and 4K shooting.

Inside there is a Snapdragon 845 with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of memory, you can insert a 400 GB flash drive. The current set of interfaces is included: Wi-Fi 5 GHz, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, USB Type-C and a 2870 mAh battery. That is, compact is also a TOP flagship, but with smaller dimensions. There are complaints from users that the phone body is thick, but this is even a plus - the device fits perfectly in the hand. It immediately becomes clear that the developers paid a lot of attention to ergonomics and ensured that the phone fits perfectly in the hand.

The cool 19 megapixel camera deserves special attention. It takes cool shots, records 4K video, and captures HD footage at 960 FPS.

Flaws:

  • There is no headphone output, but there is an adapter included.
  • The on/off button is soft - arbitrary presses occur.
  • Battery – according to GSMArena, the charge is enough for 19:20 hours of communication on a 3G network and 10:24 hours of video playback at a brightness of 200 cd/m2. However, for a battery with a capacity of 2870 mAh this is a normal result.
  • There are complaints in reviews that games and “heavy” programs heat up the smartphone.
  • Weak microphone – people rarely complain that their interlocutors can’t hear them well.

3rd place – Xperia XA2 Plus

Next is the best mid-segment smartphone from Sony. Unlike flagships, it has a Snapdragon 630 with an Adreno 508 video core, 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of memory. And although the phone won’t handle games at maximum graphics settings, you can comfortably play PUBG at medium or low settings.

A 3580 mAh battery with support for Quick Charge 3.0 provides 12:51 hours of video playback at 200 nits brightness, 20:06 hours of communication on a 3G network. A normal result for a phone with a large 6-inch diagonal screen. By the way, the display is excellent, with Full HD+ resolution and Gorilla Glass 5 protection.

Most reviews about the model are positive; users highlight the camera, shell optimization, and assembly, which inspires reliability and solidity. Plus, all available modules work flawlessly at all: GPS, radio module, Bluetooth - nothing raises any questions. Plus, this is the first mid-range phone to support Hi-Res Audio, so the sound is simply amazing.

4th place – Xperia XZ1

As is obvious from the name, this flagship is the predecessor of the XZ2 and XZ3, it was introduced at the end of 2017, but even now it is an excellent solution from the Japanese brand.

Options:

  • Android 8 updated to 9 Pie
  • IPS matrix 5.2 inches, 1920×1080, 424 ppi, protective glass.
  • Snapdragon 835 processor + Adreno 540 graphics, 4 GB RAM.
  • Main camera: 19 MP, f/2, 4K video shooting, as well as HD at 960 FPS.
  • Front camera: 13 MP.
  • Audio: stereo speakers.
  • Interfaces: Wi-Fi 5 GHz, Bluetooth 5, NFC, USB Type-C.
  • 2700 mAh battery + QC 3.0 charging
  • Water protection IP68.

The phone received the same advantages as the smartphones above: build quality and software, operating speed due to the TOP processor at the time of release, a bright screen with excellent calibration and an excellent camera. Fans are especially pleased with the design - the classic will never go out of fashion, and the “brick” stands out against the background of frameless smartphones with “bangs”.

By the way, the phone has a feature - built-in software that allows you to create a 3D model of an object. For example, you can "scan" your mug by moving the camera around it and the program will create a 3D model. It can then be printed on a 3D printer.

Flaws:

  • Poor equipment - not even stock headphones.
  • Autonomy – with active use, enough for daylight hours.
  • The super slow motion function only works adequately in ideal lighting.
  • It’s rare that a phone doesn’t connect to “familiar” Wi-Fi networks.
  • There are isolated complaints about the camera.
