How to set up a media encoder. MediaCoder - video conversion program

We talked about how you can convert modern HD formats to a regular DVD video disc. The latter records video, compressed topic or another MPEG-2 codec. However, using DVDs is not always convenient. Sometimes it is necessary to convert a film into something more compact. Well, let’s say it needs to be played on an old computer whose power is not enough for HD. Or, more likely, you have a DVD/MPEG-4 consumer player that can't decode HD. In this case, it is more convenient to record 3-6 movies on one DVD than 1-2 movies in MPEG-2 format.

In general, with this material we set the task of compressing modern HD films, which are increasingly appearing on the Internet today, into the already outdated MPEG-4 Part 2 format, which is understood by old home players and which is not problematic for playback on relatively weak computers. For now, this problem is relevant, which is why we are writing about its solution.

But before moving directly to the description of the utilities, let us recall that most modern HD films distributed over the network (that is, those that have already been compressed from Blu-ray discs) are most often encoded using MPEG-4. However, a high resolution images require more from the processor computing power. And their containers are not always recognized by old software and players.

This article will talk about following programs:Kingdia Video Converter, MediaCoder, Total Video Converter and Ultra MPEG-4 Converter. Well, in addition, we will tell you about a small useful utility MKVtoolnix. It can reduce the size of a movie without reducing its quality. However, it will reduce it slightly. We’ll tell you exactly how this is done right now.

MKVtoolnix

MKVtoolnix, as the name suggests, works with the MKV container. The result of its work is an MKV file with certain content. It is precisely this content that this utility allows you to create and/or change. You can open any media file and it will be included in the resulting file. Or you can clean up the open file a little and save it as MKV.

Input Tab

MKVtoolnix is a set of tools main program of which is mkvmerge. She does the main work. It consists of four tabs, the main one of which is the first one - Input. This is where the creation of a new MKV file takes place.

Their list is added to the area Input files buttons Add(add) and Append(connect). What is the difference between them? When adding multiple sound and audio tracks from the selected files, they will all be saved into one MKV file in parallel. That is, if you watch 10 minutes from the first track, then when you switch to the second, 10 minutes will also pass. This applies to both audio and video. This way you can make very interesting mixes when sound from one file is superimposed on video from another.

A connection is a sequential arrangement of all tracks. In this case, the audio and video tracks will simply be continued by others. Linked files are indicated by the symbols "-->".

In area Tracks, chapters and tags a list of all components of the source files is provided. There may be video and audio, and subtitles, and parts (more about them below). In general, by unchecking the boxes you can remove unnecessary content. If you are working with only one source file, then by unchecking a couple of checkboxes, you will get a more compact file. Or you can replace any of the tracks with a more compact one.

The program itself can change some things ( available options are set on the tab Format specific options, located at the bottom of the window), but its capabilities here are quite meager - it is better to use something from the arsenal described below. Tab General track options sets General settings selected track such as language, title, tags.

Well, at the very bottom there is a long text field with the path to the final file.

Attachments tab

The MKV container is a very good thing. It can contain not only audio/video tracks and subtitles, but also various other files. For example, fonts, what subtitles should be displayed in, or something else. All these additions are called Attachments(applications) and are edited on the tab of the same name.

In area Attached files there is a list of applications in open file. They can be disabled or enabled, but deleting something is not allowed. Even lower there is an area Attachments, which contains a list of the files that you want to add to the file. By selecting it at the bottom, you can specify the name of the file to be added, its description and MIME type– this must be specified.

Global Tab

Tab GlobalCommon parameters for the final file. Of interest here is the possibility of splitting a file into several fragments, divided depending on the size or duration of playback. All these settings are in the area Splitting. There is also such an interesting flag here link files, selecting which files will be “connected”. A unique code identifying their specific part will be written into each of them, after which the player, if it supports this feature, will be able to automatically “pick up” the next file upon completion of the current one.

Chapter Editor Tab

Well, that leaves the Chapter Editor tab. It is used to edit parts if such are connected to previous tab. This is a kind of analogue of parts on a DVD video disc.

In principle, everything is according to MKVtoolnix. This program takes up little space, works quickly, but may not seem very easy to use. But on the other hand, it has an excellent help document, which explains not only the options for using the interface, but also provides brief theoretical information for a particular element. For example, it explains what parts are (even explained with examples). Well, you can separately note the detailed tips that appear when you hover the pointer over a particular text field. In general, it is well done, and care for the inexperienced user is clearly visible. But we warn you right away - all this splendor is available exclusively on English language. But it's free.

Kingdia Video Converter is paid program. In general, this material describes three paid utilities for encoding, whereas in the past there was only one - . Let us remind you that we liked it more than all the others. Let's see how good this and other shareware programs turn out to be.

There is not much to say about Kingdia Video Converter. This is the so-called “one-click” converter. All settings are set in one window and these settings are minimal. The main idea is not to overload the user’s head with unnecessary data, to simplify everything into just a couple of mouse clicks.

The top half of the window is occupied by a list of converted files. They cannot be merged or edited. That is, it will not be possible to compose one video fragment from several, just as it will not be possible to remove subtitles or extra audio tracks. However, you can use MKVtoolnix for this.

Below the list is a text field with the path where the converted files will be saved. Even lower settings. Please note that general settings for all files are indicated here. That is, at the output you will receive the same number of files, but transcoded in the same way.

The program supports five different categories of codecs: AVI/DIVX/XVID (in fact, this is the “MPEG-4” we need), MPEG/VCD/DVD, WMV/ASF (WMV3 or VC-1, which were discussed in the previous article, not supported), MOV/QT, SWF/FLV (format used in Flash videos). In general, Kingdia Video Converter is formally suitable for inclusion in previous material, since it can produce DVD output. However, its options for converting to this format are very limited - you cannot add a menu, design it, and the audio tracks will all be cut.

All conversion parameters are set at the very bottom of the window. Here you select the codec, frame rate (frames per second), bitrate, resolution, aspect ratio - this is on the left side and as for video. On the right side of the audio settings: codec, number of channels (mono or stereo), bitrate, sample rate, normalization.

That's all. Perhaps we can mention the checkbox that turns off the computer upon completion of work. This can be useful, because for some reason the conversion was very slow for us. Regarding the question “Is it worth buying such a program?” Well, if ease of setup is important to you, then probably yes. But in our opinion there is more interesting analogues, which will be discussed below.

The second program we are considering, capable of converting video files from one format to another, is in many ways similar to Kingdia Video Converter. It’s even similar in name - Ultra MPEG-4 Converter. It is also a one-click utility aimed at unassuming users who want to quickly compress video. And it's also paid.

The description of Ultra MPEG-4 Converter will be even shorter than the previous program - their interfaces are very similar. At the top of the window there is a toolbar with downright huge icons. The following is a list convertible files, and under it a text field with the path to the location on the disk where the result of the work will be saved.

The new item is a small preview window of the selected file located in the lower left corner. On the right are the conversion settings. They are almost identical to Kingdia Video Convertor. Is there more ready-made profiles: for iPod, Microsoft Zune, Sony PSP, Apple TV and so on.

Cutting a fragment of a video file

However, Ultra MPEG-4 Converter still differs from Kingdia Video Converter in something more serious. For example, it allows you to convert not the entire movie, but only a fragment of it. The required time period is set in a special window called up by the button Edit start and end time located on the toolbar to the right of the list of open files.

Adding a subtitle file

You can also attach subtitles to the final file. The path to the file with them is also specified in a separate window, which is called up by the button Set subtitle file for the video. However, in our opinion, it is more convenient to first convert using Ultra MPEG-4 Converter, and add everything you need with the same MKVtoolnix.

The third converter we are considering is Total Video Converter. It can also be classified as a one-click device, although its capabilities will be wider.

The program's interface is quite easy to learn, but it is somewhat ill-conceived. It is clear that the designers not only tried, but tried very hard, but it turned out as always. There are a lot of buttons, some even with pictures. But about the purpose of the buttons that control preview video, you can only guess by scientific poking, using a tooltip or looking at the help. Some of the inscriptions extend beyond the boundaries of the designated fields; in some places they are not aligned. Yes, and a combination of dark purple windows with black text don't shine. The design of the buttons is also disappointing. In general, Total Video Converter resembles the diligent work of a talented second-year computer student. But they also ask for money for this.

Quest Menu

When you start the utility, the menu immediately opens New Task, where you need to select the desired operation. In addition to converting various video and audio formats, Total Video Converter can also create videos from a series of photos, merge several files into one, copy DVD-Video and Audio CDs, capture the desktop, replace audio tracks, and even burn the whole thing to disk.

Formats for conversion

But we'll focus on the core features. As soon as the file is selected, a window will appear where you will be offered the format you want to convert to. There are quite a few formats, clicking on which brings up a menu with possible options.

Conversion settings

When you open a file, its name, size, and similar data for the resulting file will appear at the top of the window. Just below is a drop-down list with available options conversion profile. You can set the parameters more precisely in the window Options, called by the link (I wonder why the button didn’t work?) Settings.

Setting up filters

Setting up subtitles

Setting up a watermark

There was a link just above Filters calling a special window Video Filters, where you can specify a pair of filters. For example, you can add subtitles to a film and even customize their display (by the way, the settings window for subtitles is much better designed than the rest of the program windows, and for some reason it’s not purple), add a watermark (by selecting the desired picture, setting the time for its display , appearance interval and offset relative to the upper left corner), and connect an external filter created by the VirtualDub program.

For the most advanced, there is an advanced window view. However, some of the parameters are simply duplicated there. For example, codec and subtitle settings. Well, what’s new is the ability to specify a time period that should be converted if there is no need to get a video of the same length as the output.

Saving audio and video tracks separately

All that remains is to go through some of the Total Video Converter tools. Quite an interesting opportunity, although for some reason the program will still compress them into the selected format. We believe for similar function It’s better to turn to good old MKVtoolnix, selecting only the desired audio track to save.

Combining movies

The combination tool will be useful if you need to merge several video tracks into one, or replace an audio track in a file with another. Moreover, you can replace it from another video file. The window of this tool is also not executed in the best possible way- There are a lot of buttons, the meaning is not immediately clear. In general, again, we would recommend turning to MKVtoolnix for a similar purpose.

MediaCoder

Well, we’ve reached our free converter - MediaCoder. This application has not yet reached version 1.0, but its development has been going on for four years and continues at a very active pace to this day. New build Published every one to three weeks. Moreover, what’s nice is that the program has a 64-bit version.

There is also a paid Premium version. For individual use it is practically useless. It offers features such as non-stop coding large quantity movies, no constantly popping up web pages, faster error correction, the ability to select a splash screen, technical support. In general, this case is suitable primarily for corporate users.

The first glance at the main MediaCoder window leads to the idea that this program is not as simple as the ones described above. At the top there is a toolbar, to the right of which there is a text field with the path where the conversion result will be saved. Below is a list of added files, to the right of which information about the selected file is shown in the form of a tree: container type, audio and video codecs, resolution, bitrate, frame rate, etc.

There are tabs at the bottom. Lots of tabs. Even more than you can imagine right away. On them are conversion parameters, information about the final file, an event log, and if you also turn on expert mode, then a text field with tabs will appear where you can set parameters for codecs in the form console commands. We will not describe all the tabs - this is generally a topic for a separate article. We will only touch on those that can be used most often.

General Tab

On the tab General you can specify where to save the final file, where to store temporary files during conversion, and set the priority of the program during operation.

Video tab

Tab Video allows you to select the codec with which you will compress the video track. The choice is quite extensive: from Xvid and H.264 to Motion JPEG and WMV. The bitrate is indicated below, as well as the conversion mode. The latter allows you to choose double or triple pass, which can be useful for reducing the final file size while maintaining quality. The right side displays advanced options for the selected codec. In particular, there is a list of profiles from which we would recommend choosing Advanced Simple Profile Level 3 if you are using the Xvid codec.

Audio Tab

Third tab Audio is responsible for the audio codec. Its settings are also on the right side. There you can specify the bitrate, conversion mode (CBR, ABR, etc.), container for audio track.

Container tab

The tab is responsible for the container for the final file Container. For simplicity, we recommend choosing one of three: AVI, MP4 or MKV.

Picture Tab

On the tab Picture sets the resolution of the output file. Of course, if you want to reduce the size of the film, then it is best to reduce the resolution. You can choose one of the proposed ones, but if you want to maintain the correct aspect ratio, it is better to calculate it yourself and specify it manually by pressing the button Resize.

Cropper tool

If the source video has stripes at the top, or you think it is possible to cut off part of the picture (cut it off, not reduce the resolution), then you can use the drop-down list Crop. There is a button to the right of it Cropper, which launches the tool of the same name for a visual “crop”. There you can specify the cutting coordinates, the final size, and also which fragment of the image will be displayed there.

Regarding the parameter Frame Rate, then if in the area on the top right of the video the track has a frame rate of 23.98 fps, then we recommend setting the frame rate to 24000/1001. List Aspect Ratio is responsible for the aspect ratio of the image.

Chipping and Effects Window

At the very bottom there is another button Effects, calling window Chipping and Effects. Here you can adjust the image parameters: brightness, contrast, saturation, white balance, etc. May be useful for videos shot with a personal video camera.

Sound Tab

On the tab Sound You can set the number of channels in the final audio track.

Time tab

Tab Time allows you to convert not the entire video track, but only part of it. Here you set the start and end time of the cut fragment.

Subtitle Tab

And the tab remains Subtitle. Subtitles are configured here. Their font, scale, location on the screen, encoding, blur and the file from where to download them.

That's all for the tabs. It remains to talk about some of the features of MediaCoder. First of all, these are presets for various devices: mobile phones, players, PDAs, household video players and so on. Full list you can see it in the menu Features paragraph UI Plugins.

Preset for iPhone and iPod touch

By selecting one of the presets, a separate window will appear with encoding parameters and several buttons. With their help, you can call up tools like Cropper and Effects, specify a subtitle file, etc. The right side can display the device on which the movie will be played. You can even view it there by pressing a button Play. This is done solely for clarity.

Skinned Interface Mode

On the menu Options -> User Interface Mode You can select the program interface mode. Enabled by default Normal Mode. IN Simple Mode tabs with conversion parameters will disappear, and in Expert Mode another area with tabs will appear and text fields. There is also a mode Skinned Mode, in which MediaCoder looks more glamorous, but is very similar to the simple Kingdia Video Converter and Ultra MPEG-4 Converter. There are far fewer settings in this one.

By the way, regarding the settings. They all open in Firefox browser, so if you intend to use MediaCoder, you should take care of installing it. No, this is not “firefox” propaganda, it’s all about choosing the XUL language for rendering the settings interface. And the best interpreter of it is precisely Mozilla Firefox(It wouldn’t be if its interface is written in the same language as all the plugins for it). So don’t be alarmed right away when you don’t see the usual windows, but Firefox loads instead.

That's basically it. MediaCoder is the most sophisticated of all the programs described in this material. It is a much more serious tool and we would recommend it to those people who want to get the output video file that best suits their needs. The main thing is not to be afraid to understand the settings a little; for the first time, what we described above will be enough. So go for it.

Total

The situation with converters whose the main task Distillation from one format to another is somewhat different than with DVD-video disc maker programs. Firstly, conversion utilities are mostly paid. Secondly, among them there are many “one-click” applications aimed at inexperienced users.

Kingdia Video Converter and Ultra MPEG-4 Converter are typical representatives of one-click converters. Their interface is simple and intuitive, although some advanced settings can be specified. This is especially true for the second program - it is more functional, and its appearance is more pleasant.

Total Video Converter looks like an attempt to combine all the advantages of a one-click converter with wide possibilities on video and audio transcoding. It worked out, although not in the best way. The program's functionality is wide, but its interface is far from perfect. Both in terms of ease of use and design. Free program This could still be forgiven, but they also ask for money for Total Video Converter. And when you pay money, you always expect decent implementation in all aspects.

Well, that leaves MediaCoder - the only free converter application in the article. This is definitely our favorite. Its interface is not as simple as that of the first two converters, but the reason for this is the abundance of settings. With MediaCoder you can achieve best result coding at the output, the main thing is to understand it a little. In addition, this utility has Russian localization and a 64-bit version. And it is updated quite often. So we recommend it more than others.

MediaCoder- transcoding program for audio and video files. You may ask, why do we need transcoders? For a variety of purposes. If you just want to convert a data format, or reduce the size of multimedia files, then MediaCoder will help you with all this.

Download and work with multimedia files right now.

Opportunities for MediaCoder truly wide. The program can perform any work on encoding and decoding media files, allows you to increase the compression of video and audio in order to reduce file sizes.

This utility uses all possible codecs, which will allow you to convert to any container formats, provides opportunities to convert video to normal VCD/DVD, extract sound and convert audio without noticeable loss quality, and much more.

All codecs are already included in the program, which means that you do not need to download them additionally.

Allows post-processing, can process any tasks in batch mode, while saving entries in tags, file names, and conduct audio filtering (resampling, level normalization, etc.).

The program has an intuitive interface, which means that you do not need much time to master it.

Hi all! Today I want to talk about a program like Adobe Media Encoder. Many beginners and not only them usually encode videos directly from After Effects, perhaps sometimes this is convenient, but this is not entirely correct in terms of encoding, since from AE you render in lossles (lossless material), everything else is encoding, for which it is required additional quantity time. In addition, AE uses old encoders.

Adobe Media Encoder - standard program, which is usually included in the installed product, but can also be downloaded and installed separately.

As I think it should be clear from the name, this program for encoding video and audio files into various formats, it supports saved encoding presets, and also works in batch mode, this is extremely convenient and significantly speeds up the workflow. The encoder supports various formats for exporting video files depending on the Adobe applications installed on your computer; by installing AE or Premier you will receive additional formats export.

But let's get down to business, how to code with this thing? Everything is very simple, I’ll explain it using After Effects as an example.

Once you've finished working with your composition, save the project and launch Adobe Media Encoder:

In it, click on the plus sign in the top menu (or file -> import file ctrl+I as usual, add original file). Select your AE project and click OK.

Select the desired composition and configure the format of the exported video.

As you can see in the Encoder there are a bunch of different formats for export, as well as styles for saving. What are styles? These are essentially presets (templates), which are called custom styles export, they contain settings for exporting to a specific format for the Internet (Vimeo, Youtube), DVD, Blu-ray discs, TV, sequences, PSP, iPod formats and much more. This is convenient if you do not need to delve into the details of export settings or you have little knowledge about bitrate and video quality.

After you configure the export format, press Enter (or green button play) and the rendering started.

What are the bonuses from using Encoder:

1. You can continue working on the project while my favorite ketchup is flowing and rendering is in progress.

2. More fine tuning and a variety of formats for encoding. By the way, starting with the CC 2014 version of After Effects, most of the various old encoders from AE have been removed, which means you will have to use a third-party encoder to encode video in any case.

3. You can render in batches, which speeds up the workflow, coding chains can be saved, you can mix chains from AE, Premiere, regular video and code everything in one program, at the same time.

4. There is a display of the “estimated” size of the output file, which is convenient.

5. You can trim the boundaries of video encoding in compositions, without correlations in AE.

6. After rendering, you can immediately upload the finished file to the server via ftp automatically

For lovers of Russification of everything and everyone, there is an official Russian language, search by presets.

MediaCoder convenient program for converting audio and video files into various formats, extracting audio tracks from videos, compressing selected files. Supports many popular formats. It is possible to quickly convert a file into a format understandable for mobile phones, iPhones, and DVD players.
