MediaCoder 0.8.52- download free converter audio and video files for the Windows operating system. In just 4-5 clicks you will receive a converted file without loss of quality.

This is not the first time a media converter has been reviewed on our website, but probably the first time it’s so functional. In the era YouTube And social networks humanity began to perceive information more in the form of video files than in text. Based on this, many people need to record, compress, convert, and also perform other operations with video and audio files. Therefore, the software market appeared free MediaCoder program.

Description of the MediaCoder program

This program is designed in such a way that it uses almost all currently known codecs for converting media files.

First look at the program MediaCoder may leave you confused. I'm talking about the interface now. It is not quite as easy and simple as we would like. It will most likely not be so easy for a beginner to understand all the functions and settings. For beginners, I would recommend IceCream Media Converter or Free Studio, which also do a good job, but have less functionality. Despite the complexity of the settings, you can convert the file to the desired format in just a few clicks. Be careful, because the program will use default settings, which may affect the quality of video or audio.

MediaCoder supports such formats: MP3, AAC, OGG, WMA, MP3PRO, FLAC, WAV, H.264 and 265, Apple Losseless, DivX, MPEG, FLV, AVI, Matroska, CD, VCD, QuickTime, DVD and some less popular ones.

Besides converting MediaCoder allows also compress video and audio files. This is achieved through settings when converting video or audio. Due to the fact that you control the settings yourself, you can compress only the audio and leave the video without changing the quality, or vice versa. Everything here is in your hands.

Also, MediaCoder allows extract audio streams from video recordings without losing quality. This procedure takes a little time and the output is a finished audio track. This is often required if you want to extract a song from a video clip, for example, etc.

In conclusion, it is worth noting the excellent program speed and processing video files. In general, the MediaCoder program is decent, perhaps even one of the best in this area, but it has a small drawback, which I am sure will be corrected soon - it is not 100% localization of the Russian language. That is, there are sections and lines that are not translated at all or not fully translated.

For many users who are not very experienced in computer matters, video encoding seems too much complex process. A sense of false fear of this - in reality simple - task often prompts them to use common programs that offer “two-click video conversion.” However, the image quality in the resulting video leaves much to be desired. To avoid such incidents, you need to take control of the settings and the coding process into your own hands. This can be done using free ones, but at the same time very functional programs, one of which is MediaCoder.

The MediaCoder project is already several years old, and over the years the program has gained great popularity - primarily due to its “omnivorous”: MediaCoder can easily work with dozens of video and audio formats, including MPEG2/4 (AVC), DivX/XviD ( AVI), QuickTime MOV, RealMedia and Windows Media.

Most often, users need to convert original video to the MPEG4 AVC (H.264) format, supported by modern mobile platforms, or reduce the file size while maintaining the original quality if possible.

So, we have a test video on our hands: the “BF3 Armored Kil” trailer with a resolution of 1920x1080 and a bitrate of 5,642 Kilobits/sec. Let's set ourselves the task of transcoding it into a video file with a smaller size (bitrate) and a lower resolution of 720p. To encode the video stream, we will choose the x264 encoder, which combines high image quality with low requirements for the size of the final files - in other words, it is characterized by remarkable conversion efficiency. operating system - Windows 7 SP1 64-bit.

Go to the site MediaCoderHQ.com, select the “Download” section, then follow the “Choose a MediaCoder edition to download” link to the page where you will be asked to select a Mediacoder edition. We are, of course, interested in the complete edition “MediaCoder Full Edition” - the most functional of all.

At the time of writing this manual, the current version is 0.8.16.5292 . All you have to do is click on the link containing the version number, located under the heading MediaCoder 64-bit (x64), and use one of the download mirrors.

If for some reason you cannot download MediaCoder from the official website, I recommend looking for the latest version of the program on the VideoHelp.com website in the “ Tools».

When installing, at the stage of selecting components (“Choose Components”) that will be installed into the system, check the “Extra Decoders” item in the “Video Components” section. After the first launch, a window will appear asking you to use the “Config Wizard”, however, it is more advisable to make all the settings for future encoding directly in the main window of the program itself, so you need to check the “Skip this screen on startup” item and click “Start now” "

By default, the program is minimized not to the taskbar, but to the system tray. To disable this option, in the main menu of the program select File - Setting - Overall - User Interface - Disable tray icon/Enable tray icon (instead of Enable tray icon and minimize to tray) and restart MediaCoder.

Adding files and preparing to encode

In the main MediaCoder window, a large field at the top left is reserved for a list of tasks ( Jobs), that is, files that have already been recoded into the required format or are just waiting their turn. Add new file you can use this list by dragging it directly from Windows Explorer or via the "Add" dialog box. After adding the file to the " Properties"("Properties") to the right of the list MediaCoder will display information about the container type, bitrate, duration, size, as well as detailed information about video and audio streams. Above “Properties” you will see a line showing the path to the folder in which the new file will be created as a result of recoding. By default, the folder in which the original is located (Original Folder) is used, it can be changed by clicking the ellipsis button (Browse) to the right of the field.

Below the list of tasks there are several tabs with encoding options, with the help of which we will indicate to the program all the properties of the future file we need. Select the second tab " Tasking" By default, MediaCoder places all temporary files in standard system folder AppDataLocalTemp. If in system partition there is not enough free space, it is recommended to change the folder to any other one located in a different partition (in some cases MediaCoder exports video and audio streams from the original file to separate temporary files). This can be done through the dialog box by clicking the “Browse” button under the “Working Folder” field.

By default, MediaCoder sets the priority for the encoding process automatically. If the system's responsiveness decreases too much during encoding, you can manually change the priority to the Lower or Idle level in the drop-down list in the “Priority” field. In addition, you can set preferences for the use of processor cores by specifying one of the modules directly involved in the encoding procedure: audio/video decoder or audio/video encoder. It is recommended to select the most “gluttonous” module - video encoder (responsible for converting the original video stream).

Defining Basic Settings

Now let's move on to the " Picture"("Frame properties"). First, check the Resize field. You can select the desired resolution from the drop-down list to the right of the Resize field or enter it manually. To change the brightness, contrast or gamma of the image, as well as the degree of color saturation, you need to click on the “Effects” button and in the window that appears “ Clipping and Effects»Using the sliders, set the desired values for these parameters. If the original video shows horizontal stripes (“comb effect”) in dynamic scenes, you need to apply a special filter by activating the “Enabled” item in the “De-interlace” field.

In the same window you can set the initial and final time values (in the “In Time” and “ Out Time" respectively) if you are only going to encode a specific interval and not the entire clip. Both values can be specified manually, but it is easier to do this using the slider under the frame in which the video is played. First, select a starting position and press "Mark In", and then mark the final position by pressing "Mark Out". Next - Ok to apply the settings. You can also set the starting and ending time positions for the future video file in the “Start Position”/“End Position” fields on the “Time” tab manually or by clicking on the Select button.

Important! Sometimes the contrast or saturation of the original and final images do not fully match. To make the image more contrasty (as in the original), you need to increase the “Contrast” value, and you can reduce excessive color saturation by slightly decreasing the “Hue” value.

To select the desired video container that will combine audio and video streams in one file, open the “ Container" and select "MP4" from the drop-down list in the "Container" field.

Parameters for the video stream must be set on the “ tab Video": first, next to the "Video bitrate" field, indicate the bitrate we need - 3000 Kbps, then select the video format - H.264. If you have modern video card from nVidia, you can delegate the video conversion function to the GPU - to do this, check the GPU box to the right of the Encoder field (in the latter, the name of the encoder will change to CUDA Encoder).

Parameters for the audio stream are set on the “ Audio" As an audio format, select LC-AAC (Low Complexity AAC) if the expected final bitrate of the audio stream exceeds 96 Kbit/s, or HE-AAC/HE-AAC v2 (High Efficiency AAC) - for more efficient (with less impact) for quality) conversion to a low bitrate audio stream. Default for encoding in AAC format Nero Encoder is used. On the Sound tab, in the Channels field, select Original to preserve the original channel configuration of the audio stream (usually stereo).

Audio and video stream encoding parameters

To the right of the group of tabs with the main options, including the Tasking, Video, Audio, Picture, etc. listed above, there is another group of tabs with which you can fine-tune the encoders. If you selected AAC for the audio stream, then the tab will become available to you "Nero Encoder", where in the "Rate Mode" field you can select the value "Target Bitrate" (let's call this " optimal bitrate" - as opposed to CBR/Constant bitrate - constant bitrate), and then use the slider to set the required bitrate. For movies and music videos, a bitrate above 192 Kbit/s is recommended.

Most main stage settings concerns selection correct parameters to encode a video stream into H.264 format. If a standard x264 encoder is selected (without GPU/CUDA), the tab “ x264" To achieve the best compatibility with mobile devices, in the “Profile” field you should indicate the “main” x264 profile - Main, and the range of levels (“Levels”) within 3.0-4.2. For modern and high-performance devices, you can choose High Profile and Auto-level. Change the value of the “Preset” field to Custom.

Motion Estimation

Here it is necessary to make a small digression. Each of the scenes that form the video sequence consists of a certain number of frames/pictures. This group of personnel ( GoP, group of pictures), as a rule, contains visual information about the movement of any objects or other changes we perceive (for example, the brightness of lighting). By default, the GoP length is a value between 25 and 250 frames. In this case, the frames in this sequence can be divided into three groups: i-frames(intraframes, or reference frames, key frames) are frames that fully correspond to certain frames from the original video stream, and therefore occupy the maximum volume; p-frames Predictive frames in GoP follow keyframes or other p-frames and contain only data describing changes relative to the previous frame, thus taking up much less space; b-frames(bi-directional predictive frames) are calculated by the encoder based on data about both the previous and the frames ahead of them. Compression, in other words, compression, “reduction” of the size of the video stream, video is carried out, on the one hand, through quantization and other image “simplification” algorithms applied to key frames, and on the other hand, through the use of “light” p/ b-frames containing enough information about changes from frame to frame to transform the entire sequence into a dynamic scene.

x264 actively uses b-frames to improve encoding efficiency, but in most cases you should not set the “B-frames” value above 4-5 - with the exception of animated materials (cartoons or anime). In addition, x264 allows you to enable the so-called “adaptive” mode, in which the encoder independently determines whether in each specific case it is necessary to use the above maximum (4-5 b-frames) or reduce this number by using p-frames. In "optimal mode" the encoder copes better with this task, slightly reducing the size final file(if on the “Video” tab the quality is indicated as a percentage instead of the bitrate) / improving image quality - set “Optimal” instead of “Disabled”. As for “Reference frames”, their number should be specified within 2-4 frames. The higher this value, the shorter the interval between frames when searching during video playback - but at the same time, the lower the encoding efficiency.

The main parameter, which perhaps has the greatest impact on maintaining the original video quality, is “motion assessment” in dynamic scenes (“ Motion Estimation"). If you want to achieve the maximum possible effect, choose UMH (Uneven multi-hexagon) or Exhaustive. However, the more effort the encoder puts into “calculating” movements, the longer the encoding process takes. The “Range” parameter indicates the size of the area (block) of the frame in pixels in which the “search” occurs rapid changes- for Full HD video converted in UMH modes and higher, a value of at least 16 is recommended. The “Subpixel ME” parameter determines the choice of optimization algorithm for “motion estimation” at the position of each pixel in the block: starting from a value of 6, the encoder uses different options RDO (Rate-distortion optimization) algorithm - from simple RDO for i/p frames (6) to “improved” (“Refined RDO”) for all types of frames (9). Increasing the “ME Range” and “Subpixel ME” values significantly increases encoding time.

On the menu " Advanced"("Advanced options"), you can leave active all the options designed to preserve image quality during conversion, including psycho-visual optimizations, a deblocking filter that removes artifacts in the form of "squares" (into which the image seems to break up), as well as CABAC (Context Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coder), which increases coding efficiency - albeit at the expense of the same system resources.

Starting the encoding process

Now that all the encoder settings and parameters of the future video file have been determined, you can start encoding. To do this, in the list of tasks, select original file(by checking the box to the left of its name), and click the “Start” button on the toolbar under the MediaCoder main menu. Progress is displayed using the growing “Current Task” and “Total Tasks” bars. On the “Preview” tab, you can watch in real time a window in which the frames being encoded at that particular moment are shown.

If you have queued several files, they will be processed by the program sequentially. To enable parallel encoding of multiple files, on the “Tasking” tab, select the desired number of simultaneously running tasks in the “Parallelize” field (useful for encoding audio files).

After encoding is complete, you can open an Explorer window with the folder containing the new file by clicking on the button Open" at the top right of the "Output" field. We received a more "compact" version of the trailer with a resolution of 1280x720 and a size of 44% smaller compared to the original. The coding process took about 5 minutes. MediaCoder indicated a ratio of file duration to encoding time of 0.54.

Comparison of the characteristics of the original (left) and new (right) video file created using the x264 encoder

If you need to re-encode a file (with different parameters), select it in the list, right-click on it, and from context menu select "Set item State" of this file") - "Undone" ("Status: not completed"). The status in the State column will change to Ready.

Encoding using CUDA technology

Owners of nVidia video cards can take advantage of the fast encoding algorithm in the H.264 format using CUDA architecture GPU. By checking the box " GPU" on the " tab Video" to the right of the "Encoder" field, you will switch to the CUDA encoder. Then on the tab " CUDA“Next, we have to determine the parameters for encoding the video stream: select the “Custom” item from the “Preset” list, then select the “Main” profile, level 4.2, 3 b-frames (recommended value for CUDA), and also activate automatic selection length of "Dynamic GoP" frame groups - in this case, the encoder will create a key frame that opens the GoP sequence, not through rigid specified interval(a certain exact number of frames), and if necessary, that is, when the beginning of a new dynamic scene is detected.

It should be noted that the CUDA encoder, despite significantly more high speed encoding, unable to preserve the original high quality images - especially in the case of Full HD content. However, for video encoding for mobile platforms CUDA can be preferred, since the difference in picture quality will no longer be so noticeable. average speed(ratio of duration to encoding time) trailer encoding compared to a standard encoder has increased almost 5 times: 2.46x instead of 0.54x.

In addition to MediaCoder, they also deserve attention free programs MeGUI And XviD4PSP 6.0(beta version available).
