Unboxing

1 of 3

Having rid the box of packaging film and removed outer part boxes, we will find Xiaomi Mi Alarm Clock in a separate housing. It is worth noting that when removing the speaker from the box, all the insides are removed at once, and then it takes considerable effort to remove the alarm clock itself from the remains of the packaging. Under the alarm clock we will find brief instructions on everything “understandable” Chinese And micro USB cable.

Alarm clock

Xiaomi Mi Alarm Clock has a cylindrical shape with a control puck on top. Externally, the device schematically resembles a classic wind-up alarm clock from childhood. The company calls this style 1More Design. The front part, as is often used in speakers, is covered with a fabric cover, under which there is an LED dial. On the bottom of the alarm clock there is a small bevel on which a rubber support leg is glued. On top there is a multifunctional control washer. Xiaomi Mi Alarm Clock has 3 speakers - 2 on the sides and one in the center under the dial. The back plastic wall of the watch does not have any elements except the connector micro power supply USB.

Nutrition

Xiaomi Mi Alarm Clock has a 2600 mAh battery, which should be enough for 10 days in standby mode or 8-10 hours of listening to music, but at 60% of the maximum power. Time until fully charged, declared by the manufacturer, is 2 hours.

Indication

Xiaomi Mi Alarm Clock shows the time by lighting up required LED through the fabric of the front panel. The clock has 12 digits arranged around a circle and the same number of dots that show the minutes with an accuracy of 5 minutes. At the top of the dial there are 2 symbols - activation of the alarm clock and night mode. There is an indicator between them Bluetooth operation connections, which can light blue or red.

Control

Since the Xiaomi Mi Alarm Clock came with instructions only in Chinese, I tried to figure out the controls myself. And I’ll say right away that I consider the engineers’ decision to make the puck the only control element very questionable and ineffective. But first things first.

The Xiaomi Mi Alarm Clock is turned on by long pressing the control washer. After 3 seconds pleasant female voice in Chinese it says that the device has turned on. LED hour numerals and minute dots immediately appear through the fabric. Switching off is done by holding the puck for 5 seconds.

A single press in smartphone mode will start playing music from the smartphone, and rotating the puck will increase or decrease the volume. The current volume level will be displayed when increasing/decreasing it on the display in the form of numbers from 1 to 12.

Fast double tap on the control puck turns on the clock setting mode. Rotating the puck clockwise will change the hours, and counterclockwise will change the minutes. Moreover, from 12 hours to 24 days, the indicator with the image of the moon will light up, corresponding to the PM time value. To confirm the setting, press the control washer once.

Pressing it quickly four times activates the alarm setting mode. The setting rule is the same as for the clock, except that the alarm symbol flashes.

Pressing the control puck six times in a row allows you to select one of three alarm ringtones: One loud bell, a standard ringing bell and a cuckoo. If you heard a voice in the melody selection, then you turned off the alarm clock.

When the device is turned on, holding the Xiaomi Mi Alarm Clock control puck for 3 seconds turns on the search mode for a paired device.

To turn off the alarm clock on Xiaomi Mi Alarm Clock, you need to double-click on the control puck. If you have not turned off the alarm, then after 3 minutes the melody will stop. The alarm will resume after 9 minutes. And this can happen twice.

Bluetooth light indication

Depending on the condition, blue indicator Xiaomi Mi Alarm Clock reports the device mode with various variations of the indicator. Here are indication examples:

  • Turning on – the blue LED lights up for 1 second.
  • Connection mode of a previously connected device - the blue LED blinks twice once every 5 or 10 seconds.
  • Device search mode – red and blue indicators blink alternately.
  • Connected device mode – single blue flashing once every 7 seconds.
  • Charging – the red indicator lights up until the device is fully charged.
  • Shutdown – the red indicator lights up for 1 second and the device turns off.

Alarm

To turn off the alarm clock on Xiaomi Mi Alarm Clock, you need to double-click on the control puck. If you have not turned off the alarm, then after 3 minutes the melody will stop. The alarm will resume in 9 minutes. And this can happen twice.

But, unfortunately, after this price spread across the Internet, it remained at the publication stage. The media and users were never able to experience this product.

Almost a month has passed since the release of the product and finally we received Xiaomi review AI Speaker.

Let's start with the packaging, the outside of the package looks quite elegant: on black thick paper beautiful font printed gold letters AI.

After opening, you can see a white box containing an adoption agreement. Words like this from kind smile make the new owner of the speakers happy: “I was still a child when my dad Xiaomi gave me instructions to fight all the difficulties that would come my way in life.” The package contains the AI Speaker itself and a power adapter. Adapter is not included standard port USB.

Appearance of Xiaomi AI Speaker

At first glance, the white body of the speakers resembles a smaller version of one of the brand's air purifiers. The rounded rectangular shape looks very stylish, even the holes made at the bottom of the speakers look fashionable and do not violate the minimalist style. Regarding the material, portable speaker made of plastic. Although this is cheap material, but it creates a feeling of quality.

Xiaomi AI Speaker is a beautiful and sophisticated device. For the price of $299, the speakers look very good.

Control

All speaker control buttons are located on the top of the case.

There are touch buttons in the circle here that can increase or decrease the volume. You can also switch next song, switch playlist, mute/unmute microphone. Average touch button responsible for play/pause.

The probability of daily use of the buttons is high, so they are all compactly placed at the top of the column.

Sound: there are surprises

The Xiaomi AI Speaker is equipped with an active sound unit. Similar characteristics of the acoustic structure of the speaker were introduced to the world some time ago by the large American acoustic company Bose. Even though AI Speaker has low price and small size, this speaker amazed me with its sound quality.

The sound of the AI Speaker is clearly shifted to the side, in comparison with the popular, low frequency. It's quite strange, but it gives a clearer sound. For $299, the inside of the device is very well made. If you are usually used to using loud speaker phone to listen to music, then an AI Speaker for a few hundred dollars will pleasantly surprise you.

We found ourselves thinking that the sound quality of the Xiaomi speaker is much better than that of some other expensive products from competing companies.

In addition to directly searching a song through voice, the speaker also supports Bluetooth and DLNA, and the user can directly use the APP on the phone to listen to music.

Specific functions of Xiaomi AI Speaker

This product Chinese company contains many specific functions, such as: check the weather, set an alarm, set a reminder, listen to the news of the day, check traffic and others.

On real experience tested and confirmed, the speaker understands and perceives semantics, easily moves on to music, searching for an audio library and similar resources.

Another specific function of the column is the control of smart home products from the ecosystem.

Xiaomi AI Speaker can be either a stand-alone device in the home or vice versa. This portable speaker can collaborate with and even manage other products in the brand’s ecosystem. It's there big advantage compared to other domestic loudspeakers.

According to official data from Xiaomi, more than 60 million people have purchased smart home products. There are about 10 million users who have bought more than 10 models of Xiaomi AI Speakers. This is stunning data!

Currently, users can customize the speaker's AI. For example, when leaving the house, say “goodbye”, and thus turn off the lights and sockets, then the robot cleaner will begin to clean the room, and the air purifiers will work to maintain air quality.

In addition to the above information, I would like to say that it can control lamps, air purifiers, robot cleaner, TV Box, rice cooker and others.

The MIUI forum rightly noted that Xiaomi has made a habit of suddenly announcing another product at presentations of a new product, about which there has not even been the slightest rumor. As you remember, last year at the presentation of Mi Note 2, the frameless smartphone Mi MIX became a surprise both for us and for our competitors. And yesterday Xiaomi suddenly announced a speaker with artificial intelligence at the presentation of MIUI 9 and Mi 5X. Our favorite Chinese company already has speakers in its arsenal different types and suits, so the launch of a smart speaker is just a matter of time. Xiaomi has joined a small but growing list of smart speaker companies.

Design

Mi AI Speaker is so similar to Xiaomi's air purifier that during the presentation we first thought about the announcement of the 3rd Mi Air Purifier. The speaker owes much of this to its vertical design, rounded corners and speaker grilles. On the top edge there are control buttons and a special LED ring that lights up when the speaker is turned on or performs any action.

Functionality of MI AI Speaker

Essentially, the functionality of Mi AI Speaker consists of two main functions: an assistant and a controller.

The first one will prevent you from oversleeping for work or school, making notes and a schedule for the day, reporting news, weather, and so on in the spirit of Siri and Google Now. You can even have conversations with the speaker. Of course, only Chinese is available for now, which Mi AI Speaker speaks almost like a human. Look, the Turing test will pass.

The second is intended to be a new and improved controller for all others smart gadgets Xiaomi, be it a kettle, rice cooker, smart lamp, socket or motion sensors. The speaker can work with many triggers and combinations of mi gadgets. It can turn off the water in the house when a flood sensor is triggered, turn on home mi-cameras when you leave the house, open curtains when certain time And so on and so forth.

There are 6 omnidirectional microphones on the top edge of the speaker, which allows the device to listen to you 360 degrees and at a distance of up to 16 meters. You can connect to the speaker via Bluetooth, DLNA and Wi-Fi.

The cost of the speaker is surprising - only $44 in China.

Today I would like to tell you about another “smart” speaker from Xiaomi, but this time it’s already stationary - Mi Smart Network Speaker. It boasts autonomous music playback via WiFi without the need to pair with a source, good sound, voice control, support for BT, DLNA, AUX and dual-band networks.
I invite everyone interested to cat.

The device arrived from the FastTech EMS store in 10 days. For of this product Only expedited mail is available at a considerable cost. Presaging a wave of indignation over the price, it is immediately worth noting that this column can be easily found on well-known sites for almost half the price.

Package

Arrives in a regular “envelope” with a thin layer of bubble wrap.

The speaker itself comes in a red box made of thick cardboard. All information is in Chinese.

On the back is a QR code with a link to download a proprietary application for controlling the speaker.

Of course, such protection is not enough and in some places the box was deformed.

We remove the cover and find useless instructions, also in Chinese.

The interior of the packaging is no-frills, like other Xiaomi devices.

In addition to the speaker itself, the kit includes only a 1.4 meter long power cable. To use with our sockets you need an adapter or a third-party cable.

Appearance

  • Length - 282 mm
  • Width - 90 mm
  • Height - 95 mm
  • Weight - 1.6 kg

The design is simple and concise. Available in white only. The dust that accumulates on the surface is very noticeable. The plastic feels the same as other Xiaomi devices: surge protector, organizer for wires and Mini router. There is a miniature “MI” logo on the front. The speaker holes are only noticeable if your eyes are level with the speaker.

When viewed, for example, from above they are no longer visible.

The sides are empty.

In the cuts on the front and back parts columns can accumulate over time great amount debris, which can only be cleaned out by disassembling and removing the boards from the case.

The back side repeats the design of the front.

At the bottom are AUX connectors and USB 2.0.

As well as AC for power connection.

The control panel is located in the center of the upper platform. All buttons have a soft, smooth stroke and silent click. What we see:

  • Miniature LED indicator. Lights up white when turned on, flashes when interacting with songs, and flashes red during initial setup and if anything goes wrong.
  • ON button. Slightly crooked.
  • In the very center of the panel is the “Play” button.
  • Around it are four rubberized buttons to control song playback.
  • And at the bottom is the “CH” button, which is used to turn on Internet radio. Also a curve.

At the bottom of the column there are anti-slip inserts and a sticker with brief characteristics devices.

Under this sticker are two screws that hold the bottom in place.

By unscrewing them and unfastening the latches along the entire perimeter of the column, we gain access to the interior. I'm not good at circuit design, so I'm providing the photos to the public.

Mi Smart Network Speaker is equipped with two 2.5" subwoofers with a special air duct and two 2" main drivers. Promotional photo:

Which for some reason were initially all covered in dust.

Filling

  • Rated power: 2x10W
  • AC voltage: 100 - 240V ~ 50/60Hz
  • Maximum power consumption: 30W
  • Audio playback via: WiFi, USB, AUX, DLNA, QPlay
  • Frequency Range: 20~40000Hz
  • Dynamic range: 60 - 22000Hz (-6dB)
  • SNR: ≤ - 90dB / ≥ 105dB
  • WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac / 2.4GHz/5GHz
  • Bluetooth 4.1
  • CPU: Amlogic 8726M3 Cortex A9
  • Internal memory: 8GB eMMC

As you might have already guessed, the device is powered exclusively from the network. Therefore, it is positioned as a home multimedia system, not a portable speaker. The “brain” of the device is the Amlogic 8726M3 Cortex A9 chip. Distinctive feature of this device is to play a huge number of all kinds of radio stations over WiFi. But in reality, this feature is relevant only for the Chinese themselves, because... 99% of available streams are broadcast directly from China. Among all this horde of incomprehensible chatter, stations with foreign pop music sometimes pop up, but they are extremely difficult to find. Fortunately, in the proprietary application it is possible to create your own playlists with your own music and transfer them to the speaker. I’ll tell you more about this and other possibilities now.
When the speaker is turned on, the Chinese girl mutters something. During the initial setup, I thought that the speaker was controlled from the Mi Home application. After downloading it and adding the device, the process always stopped at 90% of synchronization. After n number of tests and resetting the column to factory defaults, Mi Home stopped finding the device altogether. Well, to hell with it. As it turned out later, this application simply duplicates the remote control. There are no more settings there. So it's no problem.

Then I realized that what was indicated on the box and in the instructions was not the usual Mi Home, but a certain Mi Speaker. Looking ahead, I will say that the application is rather crooked, does not comply with the design canons and often crashes. We scan the QR code and we are transferred to a Chinese website with a download link. The column was immediately found without any problems and the firmware update began.

Next, if desired, log into your Mi account and connect the speaker to WiFi. I connected to the 5GHz network without problems. After which the user is greeted with a three-page useless greeting in Chinese. A Russified version is available on 4pda, but on my and some other phones, judging by the reviews from the same 4pda, it does not work.

That's it, the application is ready to work. In the “Smart device” section, you can probably combine the speaker with other “smart” devices. In the absence of these this screen nothing is displayed. In “Switch devices” you switch between speakers. And in the “Upgrade” section there is a firmware update.

In the settings there are a huge number of all sorts of parameters related to playback and the library.

A five-band equalizer and four presets are available.

I couldn't get along with the alarm clock. Installed it five times different time and five times it didn't work. The idea creeps in that he lives according to Chinese time. I turned it off out of harm's way, so that it wouldn't inadvertently start ringing at night.

Library. As I wrote earlier, a huge number of useless ones are available out of the box. Chinese radio stations and playlists. Among them, I found only two playlists with famous foreign songs. On one of them the quality is somewhere around 128 kbps. Exactly the same situation can be seen in Chinese flows. There is such a garbage quality that blood begins to appear from the ears. However, few people will listen to them anyway. In order not to fool yourself with searching for songs, you can do own channel. Songs are added to it from: phone memory, stored in Mi Speaker, speaker memory, as well as from Mi Music and four more Chinese online services. Pre-installed playlists do not always start quickly. But at the time of writing these lines, the “CRI HIT FM” stream with foreign hits is not turning on at all. Sometimes playback may stop, but when you click “Play” again, everything returns to normal. When you press the “CH” button on the speaker control panel, you switch between the playlists added to your favorites. When you enable the corresponding item in the settings, the same Chinese girl will pronounce the name of the selected stream. Quite convenient. You cannot set your own name, because... it picks it up immediately from the selected storage. Those. chose “Phone storage”, so it will say “Phone storage”. Perhaps it will be different in the Russified version. Another one interesting feature- turn on the playlist by voice. We hold down the “CH” button, say the name of the required stream next to the column and it starts. I haven’t had any problems with recognition yet, but my names are simple. There is still information on the Internet about full voice control, but I have not found any manual for interacting with this shaitan box. All information above applies to WiFi playback. Once you add everything you need to the library, then the speaker is completely autonomous and can play music even when the phone is turned off. It’s just not clear where all this is stored. The column memory is not clogged. 1 GB of music is added to the playlist instantly, i.e. uploading to the cloud is discarded. Mystery.

On the player screen you can save the current song to the “Speaker downloads” section, from where it can then be added to a playlist.

Sound

I will say right away that in my description “a warm sound tenderly caressing the ear on a cold winter evening by the fireplace” will not be there.
When choosing, I relied only on video reviews from one wonderful foreign reviewer of portable devices. He also has a kind of comparison of all the devices he tested, in which you can compare one or another column head-to-head. But the impression of the subject that I received while listening to it on that site and what I actually received differ noticeably. There, almost every track was dominated by bass, more like a muttering rumble. In fact, this is not the case at all. And there is no predominance of it in principle. Yes, judging the sound from a video is bad manners, but in the absence of the opportunity to test the device offline, there is simply no choice. Anyway, let's get started. The volume is adjusted with a delay of ~1 second. The adjustment step from the application is 50, and on the speaker itself - 25. I will briefly describe my impressions of some of the songs I listened to on maximum volume to flac via a cable connected to the PC.
Five Finger Death Punch- Far From Home / Five Finger Death Punch - Bad Company
In some places on the “flat” equalizer the highs are too high. Treated with a little adjustment. Medium and low levels do not cause any complaints. The bass, as they say, is dense, there is no buzzing.
Theory of a Deadman - Santa Monica
Throughout the entire song there are no blockages in one direction or another. Sounds pretty clean.
Bring Me The Horizon - Throne
There are no very obvious highs like FFDP, although there is more than a hint of screaming here. The bass also does not stick out and gives pleasant vibrations.
Nickelback Feed the Machine
Here the bass is already shaking the large surrounding surface. There are no high rubbles.
Avenged Sevenfold - This Means War
There are no blockages on all the tracks of this artist. Guitar cuts sound great.
Ludovico Einaudi - Fly
This masterpiece and other classics on a “flat” equalizer sound somewhat humming or something. I don't know how to express myself more clearly. It is necessary to adjust the equalizer and you will get a decent sound for all instruments. Distinct bass pleasantly complements the overall picture.
Bob Dylan - Knockin on Heaven's Door
Bass is slightly boomy. Other frequencies are without distortion.
Beyond Unbroken - Under Your Skin / A Day To Remember – Violence
On post-hardcore like this, at maximum volume during the hardest parts of the song. pure sound it won't be possible to achieve. Everything starts to mix into a mess. You'll have to work hard on adjusting the equalizer if it can change anything at all.
Hollywood Undead – California Dreaming
Very juicy bass. The rest needs to be slightly adjusted.
Sia - Chandelier
Obvious blockage of the upper ones. I think that not every speaker is capable of playing this track clearly.

In general, I described it as best I could. The sound quality greatly depends on the quality of the song itself, but this is already obvious to everyone. For PHC and other heavy metal at maximum volume, this speaker is not the best choice. By turning the volume down to 70%, you can avoid distortion. This level is enough for me to “swing” 50 m², not to mention the maximum volume. The sound level meter on the phone showed values up to 86dB. Acoustics, light rock and pop sounds good. I don’t notice much difference between BT, WiFi and AUX. Except that with BT sometimes some wheezing skips for ~ 0.5 seconds.

Conclusion

Pros:
  • Pretty good sound for the price
  • Strict and laconic design
  • Autonomous operation via WiFi
  • Playback via WiFi, USB, AUX, DLNA
  • Voice control
  • Built-in memory 8GB
Minuses:
  • The slots on the body will become clogged with dust.
  • At maximum volume on some tracks everything can become a mess
  • Not the best choice for heavy music
  • Crooked companion app
  • There are not a normal number of normal radio stations

To summarize, I will say that if I bought this column with my own money (let me remind you that you can find it for ~60 bucks), I would not be disappointed. If you need a speaker exclusively for home with all sorts of bells and whistles for little money, then this is a good choice. However, it's up to you to decide.
Thank you all for your attention. If you missed something, write.

Interaction smart home, one of priority areas all systems this kind. Can you call a house smart if to turn on the lights you need to take out your smartphone, go to the application and activate the lighting there? For a house to become smart, you need to learn to communicate with it, and if it is quite capable of notifying you, then it is not yet able to listen to you and carry out commands.

But progress does not stand still and the solution to this issue was implemented in the Xiaomi Mi AI Speaker smart speaker!

The speaker comes in a nice box containing various helpful information(alas, but only in Chinese):

Let's take a look inside:

Xiaomi devices come in the same design concept, so the speaker is very reminiscent of a small air purifier. The package includes the speaker itself and the power supply. Since it does not have a built-in battery, it can only work from the mains. And of course the power supply plug is of Chinese format.

The touch control unit is located on the top of the column. There are also 6 microphones:

In the center is the Play button, which controls playback. On the sides there are rewind or switch buttons audio track. At the top is a button to turn the microphone on and off. And below is a button to skip the playlist.

The circular notch is a touch-sensitive volume control that is quite sensitive to touch.

Along the edges of the column there is an LED ring, the color of which changes depending on the current state.

Mi Ai Speaker sound

Since sound reproduction is not the main purpose of the device, the speaker's capabilities are limited. For example, there is no AUX jack and AirPlay is not supported. Sound can be played through bluetooth connection and Internet radio. DLNA technology is also supported.

Inside the speaker there are 2 speakers 60Hz - 18KHz, allowing you to produce a sound of 82 dB. Below is a passive radiator that acts as a subwoofer.

The speaker sounds quite good, you can feel the bass. You won't be able to go deaf, but filling the room with music will work. Don't forget that the sound in this speaker is not the main thing.

Application for Xiaomi AI Speaker

If you are trying to add a column to MiHome in the usual way, then most likely nothing will work out for you (at least at the testing stage). Used to control the smart speaker special application Mi AI. Traditionally, accessible language only Chinese. But this is not a reason to be upset, keep the translated application, version 1.2.7 (for Android). For iOS app can be downloaded here:

As in everyone Xiaomi applications, you can use your Mi account data (similarly with MiHome). After authorization, we are prompted to add a column:

For some reason, the first time I couldn’t connect the column, I got an error:

But since I didn’t have any network barriers, I clicked the “Repeat” button and the speaker connected normally. Next, the application requests information about your preferences:

I don’t know about you, but I liked the guy in the striped sweater. But despite this, I missed these settings, to Chinese music I'm cool. On this initial setup columns finished:

But don't believe everything that is written, if you say "Mi Ai", nothing will happen. But more on that later, but for now let’s look at the application tabs:

First tab: Internet radio. Mostly there are Chinese performers, but there are also tracks from major Western groups. I was unable to find Russian-speaking performers.

Second tab: Smart home management. One of the main purposes of the speaker is voice control of smart devices. This is where the pairing of the Mi Ai and MiHome applications is configured, although not the first time. When I pressed the "Authorize Mi Ai Speaker" button, the application constantly complained about the absence of MiHome. And only after the 5th attempt, with restarting all applications, the pairing was established. Next, the application requested access to the devices:

After adding permissions, the tab displays managed devices And voice commands controls:

Now let's see how to communicate with the speaker.

Voice control of Xiaomi smart home

One of the main purposes of Mi AI Speaker is voice control of a smart home. By analogy with Google and its “Ok google”, control is activated by the code phrase: 小爱同学. If suddenly someone does not speak Chinese, then insert the phrase into a translator with a playback function. She recognizes the translator’s voice with a bang, but my pronunciation is clearly alien to her.

But it’s not enough to activate voice control; then you need to name the action and the name of the device (of course, everything is in Chinese). If you decide to actively use Chinese, then the name smart devices It’s better to change it to a numerical value for easier pronunciation. The complete command will look something like this:

小爱同学 打开开关 五

Which turns on the Aqara switch, which is called "5". I myself felt stupid when I tried to repeat this phrase after the translator, which I unfortunately failed. A logical question arises:

Will there be support for other languages in the Mi Ai Speaker?

Despite the fact that the column was released about a year ago, it is still in the testing stage. Any official information on this moment No. But I wouldn’t really hope for multilingualism to come out soon. Most likely there will be support for the English language; at the moment, the Amazon Echo assistant is expected to go on sale with voice assistant Alexa.

Let's return to our column, or rather to the 3rd tab of the application: Tools. Collected there useful commands, which the speaker can process, you can find out about the weather, set an alarm, or find out about traffic jams, etc. All this is of course interesting if you live in China. If you don't know the language, this tab is useless.

Well, the fourth tab: Profile. Change Wi-Fi settings or Bluetooth, install updates, etc.

For 3780 rubles. Or order in China with or.

And then we’ll see, they’ll at least add English language- it will be great. Or maybe someone will install Alice from Yandex? Unlikely, but also possible. Systems development voice control It is actively developing, and it is quite logical that home automation systems will completely switch to it in the coming years. We will follow the developments, and thank you for reading, see you next time.
