In addition, it is difficult to determine which of the “hatched” plants are “girls” and which are “boys”. It is much more convenient to buy a mature pistachio seedling from a nursery.

For an adult pistachio seedling, a large hole should be prepared. For several seedlings, holes are made at a distance of at least three meters. Before planting, the roots should be inspected, if necessary, cut off the damaged parts and sprinkle the cut with ash. The seedlings are planted, after which the soil is compacted and watered abundantly. Young trees do not require special care. It is enough to water them once every two weeks, and in the fall watering even less often. In the second year after planting, pistachio trees should be fed with phosphorus, potassium, and nitrogen fertilizers. The soil around the plants should not be overgrown with weeds.

Industrial cultivation of pistachios

There are several stems. Not tall. The leaves are trifoliate or pinnate with five to seven leaflets. The old pistachio is squat, six or seven meters high. But the trunk, if there is only one, can be a meter or even one and a half thick. And yet, pistachio is unlike other trees. Mainly because it does not form forests.

In the United States, pistachios began to be cultivated commercially in the late 1890s in California. Today, the state's annual production of pistachios is second only to Iran, the world's largest producer. The vast majority of the world's pistachio supply is consumed in the United States.

When the Tamchy crops were checked 16 years later, they had only thinned out a little. But the young trees looked stunted and grew only half a meter. Their stunted stems barely reached the little finger in thickness.
It's all about the soil. In deserts, there is a “dead horizon” in the soil. Rainwater does not reach it. Moisture from groundwater does not reach it. The roots of the grasses cannot overcome the dead horizon. Pistachio can. Therefore, herbs do not bother her much. In search of moisture, pistachio roots penetrate very deeply.

In the hot desert, the pistachio is a reliable shelter for all living things. Birds build nests in the dense crown. Everyone who needs it finds shade under the crown. And rodents, foxes, and even the wild ass eat pistachio fruits. They spread pistachio nuts across the desert.
Few of them germinate. And even if they do germinate, the young pistachio has a difficult start to life in the desert. In the first year, the above-ground part dries out very quickly. The spine is preserved. On next year a new stem will appear on the old roots. And again it will dry out from the unbearable heat. The spine is now larger. He will survive again. Not one, but two or more stems appear from it. And so on year after year. When the pistachio matures, it will retain several trunks as a memory of its difficult youth.

After harvesting, the nuts are dried for some time in the sun, and then stored for at least a year. Pistachios are eaten fresh, roasted, or lightly salted.

Pistachio is a high-calorie product per 100 grams: 642 calories, about 60% fatty oil, 18% carbohydrates and vegetable protein, minerals and amino acids, fiber, about 3.5% sucrose, vitamins B, H, PP, a huge amount of vitamin E .

Appearance

Pistachios grow as shrubs, but are also represented by deciduous and evergreen trees. Their height is 7-10 m.

The pericarp is thin and reddish, easily separated from the fruit. When the nut ripens, the shell most often cracks.

It is usually represented by trees whose height is 8-10 meters, but it also happens in the form of multi-stemmed bushes. The fruits are edible, but smaller than those of a real pistachio. Crafts are made from the wood of the plant.
  • Chinese. It is characterized by the greatest frost resistance and a height of up to 15 m.
  • American(also called Mexican).
  • Turpentine. Trees up to five meters high. They can be found in Sochi, Tbilisi and Baku.
  • Mastic. It is represented by small trees or bushes growing up to three meters in height. The fruits of the mastic tree are used to obtain oil. The plant is also in demand for creating hedges. The mastic pistachio is tapped to produce mastic, which can be used to make putties, paints or varnishes.

Pasta with pistachios

To prepare this delicious gourmet dessert, take 300 g of cottage cheese and rub through a sieve. Take another 300 ml. cream and beat them with a blender until stiff foam. Combine everything and put either in the ice cream maker for 40 minutes, or put in the freezer for 3-4 hours. Arrange the finished ice cream and garnish with chopped pistachios and mint leaves.

Growing

Pistachio is cultivated only in subtropical regions, since the plant needs warmth and the absence of frost to grow. To obtain fruits, trees of different sexes must be planted nearby. Pistachios grow well in sandy soils. Plants need to be watered very rarely. Trees grown from cuttings bear fruit from the age of 7-8, while plants grown from seeds bear fruit only from the age of 12.
