Motorola z2 with replaceable panels. Review of Moto Z2 Play - a new designer smartphone from Motorola. Wi-Fi is a technology that provides wireless communication for transmitting data over close distances between various devices

Although according to the results test trials Motorola Moto Z2 Play leaves a good impression, despite some of the better equipment this smartphone in our rating it is located slightly lower than the previous model. That's because the first Z Play had excellent battery life, while the Z2 had only good battery life. The manufacturer also took a step back in terms of photo quality. The pictures, while still fine, have a noticeable lack of detail. As with its predecessor, the capabilities of the second generation Z Play can, if desired, be easily expanded using modules, which opens up new possibilities for users, especially entertainment ones.

Advantages

somewhat practical modular system
good workmanship
Android updates for 2 years

Flaws

Moto Z2 Play: Moto Mod makes music

On back side Moto Z2 Play contains several small contacts through which Moto Mods connect to the smartphone. For fastening, a magnet hidden under the cover is used, as a result of which the modules can be changed without using any tools. And while there is something to this idea itself, its reception ultimately depends heavily on the quality of the modules.

To promote this on the market distinctive feature, in Europe, for example, Motorola sells the Moto Z2 Play complete with a module that is a branded JBL speaker. It's called Soundboost 2 and separately costs about 7,000 rubles. We really liked its sound - the same was the case with its predecessor, which we also tested earlier.

The sound here is loud and clear, with pleasant bass, and the sound quality of this module surpasses the speakers of any smartphone. Of course, the Moto Z2 Play with Soundboost 2 attached becomes quite bulky and can no longer fit comfortably in a tight trouser pocket.

The functionality of the Moto Z2 Play can be expanded by replacing the modules connected to the back side

Disadvantages of expansion modules

As alternative options plug-in modules are offered in the form of a 3490 mAh battery (Moto TurboPower Pack, 69 euros - 4800 rubles) or with Qi wireless charging function. A gamepad should also be available for sale. Those who like simplicity can choose a back cover without any module, just to vary appearance smartphone. Motorola's home site has an overview of all available modules.

The modular system does not entail any disadvantages, with the exception of some industrial design of the smartphone. However, some extravagant modules increase the dimensions of the device so much that users will have to carry the smartphone in a bag rather than in a trouser pocket.

In addition, some modules, such as the speaker, could theoretically connect to a smartphone via Bluetooth as an external accessory, so in our eyes such a system becomes not so valuable compared to the possibility of using separate Bluetooth speakers. In addition, the modules fidget a little back and forth relative to the smartphone, spoiling the otherwise pleasant tactile sensations of the Z2 Play.

The speaker can only be connected to the back of the smartphone. It is held by a magnet and automatically connects via a contact pad

Moto Z2 Play is thin and high quality

Regarding the quality of workmanship in the Moto Z2 Play, there is practically nothing to complain about. The smartphone (without connected modules) is very thin and, thanks to the metal back surface, looks expensive. Of course, if anyone wants, they can use it without modules, but then the appearance of the device will give the impression of incompleteness or excessive industrialism, since the contacts will be clearly visible on the back side, and the camera protrudes beyond the plane of the body very much.

Unfortunately, Motorola has decided not to certify this device to IP-67 or IP-68 standards to ensure protection against prolonged immersion in water. In an informal conversation, we were assured that the smartphone would be able to survive short swims, but users should not rely on these words.

Data transfer is carried out through the port USB Type-C according to the USB 3.1 standard. Motorola continues to use the headphone jack. At the same time, there is even an LED photo flash on the front side for selfies, which is rather rare. The wireless charging function is not supported by the device without the corresponding module.

Wired connection is via USB 3.1 Type-C

Z2 Play: a step back in terms of battery and camera

One of the former's selling points was its excellent battery life of almost 12 hours. Since the manufacturer reduced the battery capacity in the successor by 15 percent, to 3000 mAh, users of the Moto Z2 Play will not see the same endurance of the smartphone.

During our online tests, the device was able to last 9 hours and 16 minutes. Thanks to the support of the fast charging function, the battery restores its energy reserves in just 96 minutes. Those who need more solid battery life should purchase the Moto Mod with an additional battery.

During our testing, we were more than surprised by the fact that the Moto Z2 Play scored lower in the Camera category than the previous model. The effective resolution of the 12-megapixel camera (measured in the number of line pairs per frame height) was lower than that of its 16-megapixel predecessor, which is not surprising.

At the same time, we measured a higher noise level, and in the subjective part of the test we were really hampered by the pronounced blur, which smoothes out textures, but does it too hard. This effect is especially pronounced in low light conditions. Unfortunately, there is no optical stabilizer here either. As a result, the quality of the photographs, although still “okay,” nevertheless, there is a certain regression in this direction.

The Moto Z2 Play is very thin - but its battery is noticeably smaller than its predecessor

Moto Z2 Play has a good display

With its 5.5-inch Full-HD display, the Moto Z2 Play is aimed at enthusiasts large screens. With its 460 cd/m2 it shines not sensationally, but quite brightly. Until sunlight will not start to fall directly on the front side of the smartphone, you can use it absolutely without problems. Thanks to AMOLED technology, you can enjoy rich colors and almost perfect blacks.

Inside the device is a mid-range processor with eight cores, which is called Snapdragon 626 and offers solid performance. The system responds to commands quickly, and there are no jerks in the browser when scrolling - however, for gamers there are more powerful models, for example the Snapdragon 835.

Reacts quickly to touch and the fingerprint scanner, which standard settings Doesn't serve as a Home button, since Motorola uses a software-based control panel in agreement with Google. In this case, we regret it a little because there is enough space on the body to accommodate capacitive buttons, and the software panel, when enabled, reduces the effective area for displaying images.

Despite its size, the Z2 Play still fits well in the hand

Solid equipment

However, the situation can be corrected through the Moto application by assigning all control functions to the fingerprint scanner button. At the same time, once again in their current models Motorola is no longer using the LED status indicator to indicate missed notifications. Instead, you need to touch or hold your smartphone in order for the so-called “activity display” to turn on. In this state, the screen briefly displays the time and important information.

In WLAN networks, Z2 Play operates only in accordance with the n standard and can receive data from LTE networks at speeds of up to 300 Mbit/s. We find the size of the built-in storage to be really good, offering almost 51 GB of free space for efficient use by the user. In addition, it can be expanded using memory cards. When traveling outside of Europe or using a smartphone for work purposes, a slot that supports the Dual SIM function may come in handy.

With a speaker module, the smartphone becomes quite bulky, but the sound is really good

Android 7.1 with promised updates

How it became typical for smartphones recent years from Motorola, it has an almost unchanged Android operating system installed. So there is no extravagantly modified user interface or dozens of additional functions hidden directly in the firmware.

Instead, users get a neat, responsive system that Motorola wants to keep up to date for two years or two new "major" versions. In addition, monthly security updates will be released. It's great.

Motorola (and, accordingly, the parent concern Lenovo) sells the Moto Z2 Play in European stores at the time of launch, complete with a speaker module at a price of 519 euros (36,000 rubles). Thus, the cost turns out to be quite high if you think about the fact that the previous model, as of July 2017, is estimated at an average of 26,600 rubles.

Alternative: Motorola Moto Z Play

Who likes Motorola's modular system and who wants it even without additional module to get a more respectable battery life, he can with a clear conscience take the first one, which during our tests performed better than its successor, and is cheaper. As of July 2017, it is estimated at approximately 26,600 rubles - but you can find offers for 19,500 he,ktq. This is a very good price.

And Moto Mods accessories were the most practical approach to the concept modular smartphones among all existing ones, but even they could not cause a stir.

Among all the hype around the modules, one might have missed one of the best smartphones of last year, the mid-priced Moto Z Play. It wasn't the best stylish smartphone, it did not have the fastest processor and not the best camera, the screen resolution was also far from record-breaking. But it had a record operating time, and the other components were good enough that the whole device was better than the sum of its parts. was a hit in 2016, even if you didn't need any modules.

This year it will be replaced by the Moto Z2 Play smartphone for $499. In it, the developers tried to eliminate weaknesses previous version without ruining the charm. It has become thinner, lighter, the camera has been improved, the design has been updated and new software features have appeared. This smartphone supports all modules released by Motorola, such as extra batteries, projectors, cameras, speakers, etc. New smartphone It’s acceptable to call it a combination of the 2016 Moto Z Play and the flagship Moto Z at a price midway between them.

Does the Moto Z2 Play's thin and light design come at the expense of battery capacity?

The Moto Z2 Play is better than the original in almost every way, except for battery life. However, as a result of this, it does not become worse, which became clear after a week of testing.

Those familiar with last year's smartphone will immediately notice that the new one has become much thinner and lighter. It cannot be called a small smartphone, the screen diagonal is 5.5 inches, the aspect ratio is 16:9, so it belongs to large models. At the same time, its case thickness is only 6 mm, the device weighs 145 g. The Moto Z2 Play is almost as thin as the flagship Moto Z, an additional 0.7 mm gives space for a headphone jack, which the Moto Z lacks. As a result, the smartphone has become more pleasant to hold in your hand.

The device has become lighter and thinner, partly due to a 15% more compact battery. As has already been said, the most strong point Last year's device had a long battery life, but now this advantage has become less noticeable. Despite this, the smartphone lasts longer than most others.

Moto Z2 Play can be used at high load levels throughout the day without any problems. The operating time with the screen on can be about 6 hours; there is no need to connect the device to an outlet in the middle of the day. Many other smartphones require charging after only 3-4 hours of use, so the Z2 Play is much better than average. If you do not use your smartphone constantly, it can easily work for two days.

Thus, the operating time did not suffer critically, but the smartphone became sleeker. Moto Mods accessory support allows you to install new module TurboPower Pack with built-in battery and extend the operation of the device.

Motorola also made other hardware improvements. The appearance of the smartphone isn't much different from last year's, as Moto Mods require consistency in smartphone design, but the Moto Z2 Play still feels more polished and detailed. The rear glass surface, which was often scratched and damaged, has been replaced with a more durable and attractive metal finish, and the fingerprint scanner on the front has become larger.

The developers also improved the cameras, they got better lenses and faster focusing. Despite this, the level of image processing does not reach the capabilities Pixel smartphones, iPhone or . The camera on the Z2 Play may experience problems with high level contrast, lack optical stabilization Image quality deteriorates in low light. The camera is good, but not great.

Performance, camera and display - "this is great"

Performance thanks to the Snapdragon 626 processor and 4 GB of RAM is at good level. The interface does not work as lightning fast as on flagship smartphones with the most powerful Snapdragon processor, but no slowdowns were noticed. The same applies to AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1080p. It's not the brightest or most pixel-dense, it doesn't have curved edges, and it's got a traditional aspect ratio, but it's good enough for everything except, perhaps, desktop devices. virtual reality, the image is clearly visible outdoors. You simply won't think about the processor and screen while using this smartphone; they do their jobs well and are therefore unnoticeable.

In the application space, Motorola has long used almost pure Android version, only changing it a little. The Moto Z2 Play supports a number of gestures, like double-tapping to turn on the flashlight or double-twisting to activate the camera. The Moto Display feature displays the time and notifications when you pick up the smartphone or wave your palm in front of it, there is also a battery charge indicator and the ability to respond to notifications without having to unlock the screen. You can reply to a text message using text or voice directly through Moto Display.

The new voice control is great, the fingerprint scanner is a little less

Many smartphones provide the ability to work hands-free using voice commands; Motorola devices made this available in 2013. The Moto Z2 Play takes voice commands even further. You can not only wake up your smartphone with your voice and activate Google Assistant using the phrase “OK Google,” but also ask your smartphone to show you something. You can ask to show the weather, your calendar events, or launch any application without touching your smartphone. For security reasons, only the user's voice is supported.

The new gestures on the fingerprint scanner, which are designed to replace screen ones, seem a little less useful. Home buttons, Back and Recent Applications. Clicking on the scanner takes you to the home screen, swiping to the left means Back, swiping to the right opens the list of applications. Everything would be fine if these gestures were easy to perform. Often you want to make one gesture, but another one works. For this reason, by default these gestures are disabled and you can use traditional on-screen buttons. Developers could use the areas next to the fingerprint scanner for the back and recent apps buttons, as some other manufacturers do.

What made last year's Moto Z Play so appealing was that it offered solid performance, good software, and a decent camera in addition to its excellent battery life. In the new smartphone, this ratio has changed slightly. The operating time has decreased, the camera has improved, but in general all the advantages of the smartphone remain the same. This is a smartphone with a high level of performance, all the basic components work as they should, there are no frills and the price is at an acceptable level.

On the other hand, for $500 there are others interesting options. Budget smartphone you can’t call it anything, rather its price is closer to the flagship models, which have best screens and appearance. This is especially noticeable when purchasing in installments, when the monthly payment amount between Moto Z2 Play and Galaxy S8 differs only slightly.

Despite this, the Moto Z2 Play provides a great mix of quality components and no frills. He has more working hours than flagship smartphones. For most users this will be enough.

Pros of Moto Z2 Play

  1. Slim and light design;
  2. Battery life;
  3. Software improvements.

Cons of Moto Z2 Play

  1. The camera does not have optical stabilization;
  2. Inconvenient fingerprint scanner gestures.

Announced last fall, Moto Z Play became the most... affordable smartphone in the Moto Z line. Like the older models, it supported the installation of Moto Mods, but made do with less powerful hardware and therefore cost less. Now the Moto Z Play has a successor, but owners of the previous model are unlikely to rush to buy it - the new product has received only minor improvements, and in some ways it has even become worse.

Design

All devices from last year's Moto Z line had enough original design. Some people liked it, some didn’t, but the fact that the devices stood out from most other smartphones was undeniable. The new Moto Z2 Play does not shine with originality: at first glance it looks almost indistinguishable from its predecessor, although there are still some changes. Firstly, the smartphone has become thinner. Just one millimeter, but taking into account the fact that the Moto Z Play couldn’t be called fat, the final result turned out to be quite good – 5.99 millimeters. The battery has become a victim of weight loss: its capacity is now 3000 milliamp-hours instead of the previous 3510. At first glance, the loss is not so significant, but according to the manufacturer, the Moto Z2 Play can work for 30 hours on a single battery charge - 20 hours less than original Z Play.
As for the remaining changes, they are mainly cosmetic in nature. Thus, the fingerprint scanner located under the display has become oval, and the antenna has moved entirely to the side edges of the case.

Characteristics

In terms of technical characteristics, the Moto Z2 Play does not have much more differences from its predecessor. Like the previous model, the new product is equipped with a 5.5-inch Full HD display, made using AMOLED technology. The processor, in fact, also remains the same - the new Snapdragon 626 differs from the Snapdragon 625, which was equipped with the Moto Z Play, mainly only with a frequency increased by 200 MHz. There are no significant changes in the memory configuration: basic version The smartphone is still equipped with 3 GB of RAM and a 32 GB flash drive. But now those who wish will be able to purchase a more expensive version of the Moto Z2 Play with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage.

But Lenovo decided to use a different camera in the Moto Z2 Play and, it seems, borrowed it from the Moto G5 Plus. At least in terms of characteristics, the modules are similar: 12 megapixels, f/1.7 aperture and the ability to shoot 4K video. A 5-megapixel sensor with wide-angle optics and flash is installed in front.

Key Features of Moto Z2 Play:

  • 5.5″ AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels (pixel density 401 ppi)
  • Snapdragon 625 system-on-chip (8 Cortex-A53 processor cores with clock frequency 2200 MHz)

Moto Mods

One of key features devices from the Moto Z line, it was and remains possible to install external Moto Mods modules that complement the standard functions of smartphones. For an additional fee, the manufacturer offers customers a camera with a Hasselblad True Zoom lens, a Moto Insta-Share Projector, an Incipio offGRID Power Pack battery and a JBL SoundBoost speaker. The Moto Z2 Play retained support for all these modules, but in addition to them, Lenovo announced several new products.

These included:

  • Moto GamePad is a gamepad with two analog sticks and a 1035 milliamp-hour battery.
  • JBL SoundBoost 2 is an improved version of the JBL SoundBoost sound module with two 3 W speakers, a waterproof coating and a 1000 milliamp-hour battery.
  • Moto TurboPower pack – 3490 milliamp-hour external battery with fast charging capability.
  • Moto Style – wireless charging in four colors to choose from.

Moto Z2 Play, a mid-range smartphone from Lenovo, is thinner and lighter than last year's predecessor, while inheriting it main feature- support for replaceable modules that are “magnetized” to back panel. Let's find out in the review whether the manufacturer managed not to spoil last year's successful "recipe", and whether the price of the Moto Z2 Play corresponds to its characteristics and capabilities.

The Moto Z line of smartphones announced last year (see our reviews and) Moto Z2 Play, which also supports work with replaceable Moto Mods. These “attachments” add new functions to the devices included in the Moto Z family, but instead of them you can also attach a variety of decorative panels. The accessory attached to the rear panel of the case is fixed with built-in magnets, and necessary connection between the replaceable module and the smartphone is carried out through a special interface. The first Moto Mods collection consisted of replaceable panels, a photo module, an additional battery, a stereo speaker system and a projector. Now it includes a gaming module, a 360-degree camera, a second version of the speaker system, as well as fast and wireless charging. In August, Moto Z2 Play will debut on the Russian market.

Moto Z2 Play review: design, ergonomics

There have been no significant transformations in the design of the Moto Z2 Play compared to . However, there are a number of features that are worth paying attention to.

So, having practically not changed in terms of dimensions (156.2x76.2 mm versus 156.4x76.4), the new product managed to lose 1 mm in thickness (5.99 mm versus 6.99 mm), while its weight decreased even more noticeable - 145 g versus 165 g.

While retaining the Corning Gorilla Glass 3 to protect the screen, the glass surface on the back has now been abandoned.

Radio transparency for the antennas is ensured by a continuous strip along the perimeter, which looks quite unusual. The matte water-repellent coating is designed to create a barrier that prevents small amount moisture inside the device. For Moto Z2 Play, there are already three color options - dark gray, gold and silver. Other external differences worth mentioning new uniform the touch pad of the fingerprint scanner, which has changed from square to more elongated, almost oval. By the way, the scanner pad can be used for navigation instead of the usual on-screen buttons.

So, the front side of the new smartphone, including the screen, is completely covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 with an oleophobic coating.

Around the speaker slot there is an LED flash (left), a front camera (right), as well as light and proximity sensors (right). The flash is now dual - CCT (Color Correlated Temperature), that is, it provides more natural lighting when shooting. The speaker, as before, appears in two guises - as a “conversational” and “multimedia” speaker.

On-screen buttons ("Back", "Home" and "Recent Applications") are made in the form of triangle, "circle" and "square" icons.

The hole for the “conversational” microphone remains on the insert under the screen, to the left of the fingerprint scanner area.

The left edge of the body is usually empty.

And on the right edge there are separate, unusually small, volume keys, as well as a power/lock button with raised notches that allow you to distinguish it by touch. But the volume up and down buttons are quite easy to confuse with each other.

On bottom end, where the symmetrical USB Type-C connector is located (with support for the high-speed version USB interface 3.1), there were no “sacrifices”, retaining the 3.5 mm audio headset connector. On a thin smartphone, in modern times, this is almost an achievement.

The top end remained unchanged, which was occupied by a second microphone and a closed slot. In it, on a special tray, on one side there are places for two subscriber identification modules of the nanoSIM format (4FF), and on the other - for a microSD memory card. Such a solution could well serve as an example for other manufacturers, who often “save money” by using a combined slot for memory expansion.

The back panel of the smartphone is traditionally decorated with the Motorola graphic logo.

In its lower part, in addition to the proprietary connector for connecting replaceable Moto Mods modules, there was a hole for a third microphone,

and at the top there is a place to place the main photo module. At the same time, the latter protrudes noticeably above the plane of the rear panel. In addition to the lens itself, the photo module also includes a laser rangefinder and dual LED flash (CCT). The NFC antenna area is located right in the area of the photo module.

Thanks to the “rounded” design of the case, the Moto Z2 Play smartphone fits quite comfortably in the hand even without a removable back panel. Some people, of course, may be confused by the defiantly convex photo module and the conspicuous golden contacts of the connector for Moto Mods. But this is purely a matter of taste. In addition, the matte back panel of the Moto Z2 Play is not easily soiled.

But you have to pay for the installation of replaceable modules by increasing the weight and overall thickness of the device.

Moto Z2 Play review: screen

The new smartphone, like its predecessor, was equipped with a 5.5-inch screen based on a Super AMOLED matrix, while maintaining Full HD resolution (1920x1080 pixels). Thus, the dots per inch density is 401 ppi. The economical power consumption of this type of display undoubtedly contributes to the overall energy saving of the smartphone. Let us also recall that the screen protection is provided by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, and the oleophobic coating applied to it contributes to easy removal fatty contaminants. The ratio of the screen area to the front surface of the smartphone is about 70%.

AntTuTu Tester and MultiTouch Tester programs were able to recognize ten simultaneous presses on the touchscreen capacitive screen. The backlight level can be adjusted manually or automatically (the "Auto-brightness" option). With minimum screen backlighting, it is quite comfortable to read in the dark, and at maximum, the image can be seen even in sunlight.

The size of interface elements on the screen is set in the section of the same name. Separate font size adjustment is also complemented by its preview. The settings provide two display modes. In “Normal” the colors look calm and warm, but the choice of “Vivid” responds with the richer shades inherent in the Super AMODED display. Activating the Moto Display option allows you to display battery charge, current time and date, and various notifications on the locked screen. To see this information, you need to take the device in your hand or bring your palm to its display.

Moto Z2 Play review: cameras

IN Lately Many manufacturers have stopped mindlessly chasing simply increasing the number of megapixels in the cameras of their smartphones. For example, the photo module of the Moto Z2 Play was equipped with a 12-megapixel sensor. While a year ago we settled on a 16-megapixel sensor. Note that relatively big size pixels (1.4 µm) increases the chances of good shooting in low light conditions.

Returning to the main camera of the Moto Z2 Play, we note that it has a dual-tone LED flash (CCT), a lens with a large f/1.7 aperture, as well as phase detection and laser (infrared) autofocus. At the same time, phase detection autofocus uses Dual Pixel technology. As is known, in this case one image element consists of two parts (hence the name), both of which are used both for phase focusing and for obtaining the image itself. Maximum resolution The main camera is achieved with the classic aspect ratio (4:3) and is 4032x3024 pixels (12 MP), and with widescreen (16:9) - 4032x2268 pixels (9.1 MP). Examples of photos can be viewed.

What is known about the front camera of the Moto Z2 Play is that it has a wide-angle lens with an f/2.2 aperture and a fixed focus, and the pixel size on the matrix is also 1.4 microns. Yes, and it has a double LED flash. The maximum resolution of a selfie with a classic aspect ratio (4:3) is 2592x1944 pixels (5 MP), and a widescreen groupie (16:9) is 2592x1458 pixels (3.8 MP).

The main camera can record videos in 4K resolution (3840x2160 pixels) at a frame rate of 30 fps. In addition, Full HD@60 fps mode was added to it. But the front camera is limited in quality (1920x1080 pixels)@30 fps. Both photo modules are designed to shoot slow-motion video at 720p@120 fps (1280x720 pixels). All content is saved in MP4 container files (AVC - video, AAC - audio).

The interface of the Camera application, compared to , has not changed at all. You can take a photo either by touching the screen anywhere, or by tapping on the “Shutter” icon. To the right of this button there is an icon for selecting the current mode - “Photo”, “Video”, “Panorama”, “Slow motion” and “Professional mode”.

In the “pro” case, the orbital settings independently set the values of ISO, shutter speed, exposure levels, white balance and focus. At the same time, both cameras have an Auto HDR option. You can change the scale (x1-x8) on the viewfinder by moving your finger up or down on the display. Swiping left takes the screen to the photo gallery. Swiping right opens the settings panel. The Quick Capture option allows you to open the Camera app or switch from the main to the front camera (and vice versa). To do this, you need to quickly turn your wrist with your smartphone twice. To adjust focus and exposure, drag the “clip” on the viewfinder to the desired location, where the control can easily adjust the brightness (exposure) of the picture.

Moto Z2 Play review: sound

The good sound quality of the speaker, which acts as a “conversational” and “multimedia” speaker, has been preserved in the Moto Z2 Play. The smartphone still does not have its own audio player; you have to use “Play Music”. Interestingly, an FM tuner has appeared that can record stereo broadcasts in AAC format(44.1 kHz, 2 channels). When connected wired headphones the output automatically switches to them. However, you can listen to the radio through the speaker.

Well, the best way to enjoy your favorite tracks is through a replaceable acoustic module JBL systems SoundBoost/SoundBoost 2,

the first version of which came to us for testing along with a smartphone.

Let us remind you that this device has two dynamic emitters (the diameter of each is 27 mm), and the total power reaches 6 W (2x3 W). The built-in battery capacity (1,000 mAh) provides battery life up to 10 hours.

The overall dimensions and weight of the JBL SoundBoost are 152x73x13 mm and 145 g, but the second version (JBL SoundBoost 2) is 1.5 mm thicker and 10 g lighter. Externally, the updated device can be distinguished by its color scheme, water-repellent nanocoating, and, most importantly, by the different, non-circular shape of the hole for the main photo module.

JBL SoundBoost connects and is recognized almost instantly. There were no problems playing music during testing. In general, a worthy alternative to a portable speaker. It's just a shame that the first version of this replacement accessory doesn't work with the My JBL SoundBoost 2 app.

Moto Z2 Play review: hardware, performance

Only a small step has been taken in updating the basic platform of the Moto Z2 Play. Thus, the 8-core 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 (MSM8953) chip was replaced with a slightly faster Snapdragon 626 (MSM8953 Pro).

ARM Cortex-A53 cores can now be clocked at 2.2 GHz instead of 2.0 GHz. At the same time, the Adreno 506 graphics accelerator remains the same. The same X9 LTE modem provides data transmission LTE Cat.7/13 (300/150 Mbit/s) and work with Wi-Fi networks up to the "ac" standard. The basic configuration of the Moto Z2 Play (model XT1710-07) is supplemented with 4 GB of LPDDR3 RAM (933 MHz).

On basic synthetic tests, the Moto Z2 Play achieved good but average results. Note, for example, that on the High Performance and High Quality settings of the Epic Citadel visual test, the frame rate remained virtually unchanged.

The new smartphone (model XT1710-07) has 64 GB of internal memory. To expand this storage, the Moto Z2 Play has dedicated space for a microSD/HC/XC memory card up to 2TB. In addition, thanks to the support of USB-OTG technology, it is easy to connect USB flash drives to the device.

Two nanoSIM (4FF) format subscriber identification modules are connected to one radio module and operate in DSDS (Dual SIM Dual Standby) mode. The set of 4G frequency bands includes the required “three cards” - “three” (B3, 1,800 MHz), “seven” (B7, 2,600 MHz) and “ace” (B20, 800 MHz). Among other wireless communications, we note the Wi-Fi module 802.11 a/b/g/n/ (2.4 GHz + 5 GHz), as well as Bluetooth 4.2 LE + EDR and NFC interfaces.

The NFC interface allows you to use the service Android Pay, and its support for Mifare Classic technology makes it possible to find out the balances of Troika and Strelka transport cards.

GPS and GLONASS satellite systems are used for positioning and navigation. Also supported A-GPS mode(coordination over cellular and Wi-Fi networks).

The elegant body of the smartphone made itself felt - the capacity of the non-removable battery was reduced to 3,000 mAh. Let us remember that this parameter is 3,510 mAh. Thanks to TurboPower technology, in just 15 minutes the Moto Z2 Play battery is filled enough to power the smartphone for 8 hours. The kit comes with a 15-watt charger, rated at 3 A, with a tightly attached cable. At the same time, the empty “tank” is filled approximately halfway in 30 minutes. According to the manufacturer, a 100% charged battery will last for 30 hours of phone calls.

The AnTuTu Tester battery testing program showed a very good result of 13,559 points. At the same time, every hour of continuous video playback (in MP4 format with hardware decoding in Full HD quality and at full brightness) reduced the battery charge by 7.5-8% (within 7 hours). This result, of course, is somewhat worse than that (6% per hour), but is also impressive.

The power saving mode in a smartphone, as usual, is activated, either forcefully or automatically, when the battery charge level is 5% or 15%.

Moto Z2 Play Review: Software Features

The Moto Z2 Play smartphone runs on operating system Android systems 7.1.1 (Nougat) without any frills on top of its interface.

Using a fingerprint scanner (after registering a fingerprint, of course), you can conveniently lock and unlock your smartphone.

The Moto app supports gestures and voice commands, and manages on-screen notifications using the Moto Display option. At the same time, activating the night mode adds warm tones to the image on the screen. Voice commands(“Moto Voice”) like “Show the weather forecast” or “Show Chrome” weren’t too impressive, but I liked the navigation (“Moto Actions”) using the fingerprint scanner pad.

So, switch to main screen is performed by quickly touching the capacitive pad, the "Back" button is replaced by moving your finger from right to left, and to view "Recent Applications", you must, on the contrary, swipe your finger from left to right.

Moto Z2 Play review: purchase, conclusions

The Moto Z2 Play differs from its predecessor in appearance with a thinner and lighter body. Moreover, even with a reduced battery capacity, this device managed to maintain good autonomy. Its undoubted advantages also include the ability to connect replaceable Moto Mods, TurboPower fast charging, separate trays for two SIM cards and a memory card, and, in addition, the latest version of Android OS (Nougat).

Having lost, in comparison with , in autonomy, the updated smartphone, unfortunately, did not rise much in terms of performance. Judging by the characteristics, Moto Z2 Play belongs to the middle class, which cannot be said about its price at the start of sales - 34,990 rubles. For that kind of money you can find a worthy rival in Russian retail. For example, for one released a year ago ZTE Axon 7 4GB/64GB with a 5.5-inch AMOLED screen, in large retail chains they asked for the same amount (at the time of testing the Moto Z2 Play), and average price according to Yandex.Market it was generally 27,940 rubles. Although the body of the ZTE Axon 7 is not so elegant (7.9 mm thick), it has a more powerful processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 820), higher screen resolution (2560x1440 pixels), a larger battery (3,250 mAh), and a main camera ( 20 MP, f/1.8) with optical stabilization.

True, the ZTE Axon 7, as well as other competitors of the Moto Z2 Play, does not accept replaceable modules. But it is precisely such accessories that allow you to quickly customize your smartphone to suit the accented this moment user needs - autonomy, music, photos, games, etc. So in promoting the Moto Z2 Play on the market, much will probably depend not only on the price of replacement modules, but also on their wide availability.

The Z2 Play is no-nonsense in terms of specs and extremely thin in body - so much so that it even comes with a rear panel pad just to add thickness.

The thickness of 5.99 mm was achieved by reducing the battery capacity relative to its predecessor. The battery in Moto Z2 Play has a capacity of 3000 mAh. Supported fast charging- 15 minutes is enough to provide the device with 8 hours of operation.

Updated camera - new 12-megapixel module with dual pixels, hybrid system focusing and aperture ƒ/1.7 allows you to take high-quality images under the most difficult shooting conditions. There are a variety of special Moto functions: in particular, Moto Voice allows you to control the device hands-free, and Night Display provides quick translation screen settings in eye protection mode for comfortable reading in low light.

All this is extremely valuable, but what makes a smartphone especially attractive is the ability to quickly attach a component to it and, as a result, get a completely different device.

The Moto GamePad module will turn the device into a gaming console, equipped with two joysticks and full set buttons for control. To prevent the fun from ending too quickly, the module has its own battery, thanks to which the playing time increases to 8 hours.

The updated SoundBoost from JBL will turn your smartphone into an audio system with the ability to customize the sound to suit your needs. various situations, musical genres and personal preferences. The Moto Z2 Play equipped with it will be able to play music for up to 10 hours without recharging.

If you need to extend the operating time of your smartphone without recharging, the Moto TurboPower Pack will come in handy - extra battery 3490 mAh, which adds a whole day of battery life to the Moto Z2 Play and allows you to charge the smartphone’s own battery in accelerated mode.

Moto Style Shell + Wireless Charge covers not only change the appearance of the device, but also add wireless charging functionality.

Only for some reason the price tags for this beauty have not yet been announced. However, not all of them are available for other markets either: in particular, in the USA, the JBL SoundBoost 2 audio module is offered for $79.99, the overhead headphone with wireless charging is available for $39.99, and prices for the rest of the new items from Moto Mods have not yet been seen.
