Have you decided to buy a new smartphone, and it must be manufactured by the company? If you are a long-time user of this company's devices or want to try them for the first time, you will find it useful to review the smartphones they currently have from which to choose.

Sony is one of the most popular Android manufacturers and has attracted a lot of attention by becoming the world's first smartphone with a 4K screen resolution. Naturally, this model is not the only one in the Japanese company's stock.

Below we will list the most interesting devices produced by Sony, already on sale or soon to go on sale, sorted by price range. But first, let's take a look at what Sony is preparing to release soon. In February, at the MWC exhibition, the company announced a new line of Xperia X smartphones. Apparently, the Xperia Z series will be discontinued, and the X models should try to attract new buyers. There are currently three models in the new line; the release date of the most productive is unknown. But we know about two others:

Standard size Sony smartphones

Now let's look at what is already on sale.

This year, Sony will focus on 4K, HDR (high dynamic range) and Android TV. More premium models will be offered, and HD models will not have Android TV support. All 4K TVs will include HDR support, but if you want optimal HDR, you'll need to look towards high-end TVs.

Review of the 2016 TV line

3D, like curved TVs, has never been a priority for Sony. For 2016, Sony only offers one curved TV. 3D remains in some models, but without development. And you can even say that the 2016 model is in many ways a continuation of the 2015. But some technology changes have occurred.

The first theme for Sony in 2016 is development of 4K technology for screens and HDR. Thanks to these parameters, the image rises to a new level, as Sony says.

It can be said that the development of high dynamic range (HDR) technology plays a bigger role in this than 4K. With HDR, you can more accurately display high-contrast video scenes.

HDR content will begin to appear with the release of the first UHD Blu-Ray discs. Also on the Internet, some services offer streaming video in HDR quality. These are Amazon, Netflix and Vudu, but it is worth saying that there is still little HDR content. YouTube also plans to start broadcasting an HDR signal in 2016, but to receive it, the TV must have a VP9-PROFILE2 decoder.

Sony TVs will not support UHD Premium certification. According to the rules of the UHD Alliance, to obtain such a certificate, a TV must have a 4K resolution, a color gamut of 90% DCI-P3, HDR and a peak brightness of 1000 nits, and a black brightness level of 0.05 nits. Sony says its two high-end TVs will be able to meet these requirements, but the company will introduce its own "4K HDR" logo for them.

For a wide range of colors Sony uses its Triluminos backlight system. This means that the TV is able to display more colors than traditional devices. But you need to remember, in order to get the maximum result, the signal must comply with these technologies.

Another big theme for Sony in 2016 is Android TV operating system. Last year, Google's Android OS was introduced into Sony TVs.

Now this system is an integral part of Sony TVs. It is based on the functionality of Smart TV. Later this year, 2015 and 2016 TVs will be updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Sony does not disclose all the technical parameters of the new models; it was only said that in 2016 a faster processor is used. The new remote control will come with all Android TVs. It features a large Netflix button.

The 2016 flagship models XD93 and XD94 this year come without special acoustics on the sides of the screen, as was the case last year. But there is one important difference between them. The XD94 features a Full Array Local Dimming (FALD) system that is capable of varying backlight brightness across multiple zones. With this backlight you get real HDR. The XD93 will use a special Edge LED backlight called the "Slim Backlight Drive". It uses two rows of LEDs and two diffusers. This allows you to increase the number of local dimming zones.

The class below would be the XD85 series. This is an edge-lit LED model with 4K resolution and support for HDR processing. There will be no real HDR here, only "processing" because these models cannot reach the same peak brightness as the XD94/XD93. S85C is similar to XD85 only with a curved screen.

The next WD7 series will have HD resolution and without Android TV. But there will still be some smart features. After the WD7 series there are also WD6 and Rd4.

Later this year, Sony may also add 4K models and show them at IFA. But now there are only these series. And the choice here is simple, choose the XD85 if you need a mid-range TV. Choose SD85 if you need the same device, but with a curved display. But if you want high-end images with true HDR, then go for either the XD93 or XD94 depending on the size. All 4K models will be equipped with a dual tuner. For 4K TVs, a speaker system with wireless connection will be supplied.

Sony TVs 2016 will be marked with the letter "D".

At the MWC 2016 exhibition taking place these days, Sony Mobile relied not on the Xperia Z series, which “settled” on the Xperia Z5 model, but on the new Xperia X family, within which three smartphones were presented at once, designed to compete not only with flagship solutions from Samsung and LG, but also with more affordable devices from HTC and Lenovo.

Sony Xperia X Performance is a flagship device, which, like the Samsung Galaxy S7, is built on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 single-chip system with four computing cores operating at 2.2 GHz and Adreno 530 graphics. It is complemented by 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of flash memory, and the latter can be expanded using microSD cards with a maximum capacity of up to 200 GB.

As for the display characteristics, Sony did not chase its competitors, equipping its brainchild with a 5-inch Full HD IPS matrix, but with a set of proprietary technologies like Triluminos and X-Reality Mobile, as well as the now fashionable glass rounded at the edges, which covers the entire front The panel is like a continuation of the same rounded edges of the body. There is a fingerprint scanner on the side, and the device itself is protected from moisture and dust according to the IP68 standard.

The Japanese have taken an even more thorough approach to the photographic capabilities of the Sony Xperia X Performance: here they are responsible for the 23-megapixel IMX300 1/2.3” module located on the back of the body, equipped with an LED flash, predictive hybrid autofocus, an electronic image stabilization system and a recording function video in resolution up to 4K (recording in this quality is carried out at 30 frames per second, and for the 720p mode a frequency of 120 Hz is available). The front camera of the Xperia X Performance is also good - it is based on a 1/3” matrix and has a resolution of 13 megapixels.

Sony Xperia X is very similar to its older brother, including in terms of characteristics: it uses the same display and the same cameras, and has exactly the same fingerprint scanner on the side. However, the hardware basis is somewhat simpler - instead of the top-end Snapdragon 820, the Xperia X is equipped with a Snapdragon 650 chip containing six 1.8 GHz cores and an Adreno 510 graphics controller. However, the amount of RAM has not changed compared to the flagship - it is 3 GB, and flash -you can even get twice as much memory, since in the version with two SIM cards, which of the entire trinity is available only for this model, its volume is increased to 64 GB.

The “single-carrying” modification has the same 32 GB as the Xperia X Performance, but in both cases the user has the opportunity to install a microSD card with a capacity of up to 200 GB. In addition, the Xperia X turned out to be slightly thinner than the flagship (7.9 mm versus 8.7 mm), although the capacity of its non-removable battery decreased slightly - from 2700 mAh to 2620 mAh.

A weaker battery (2300 mAh) is used in the Xperia XA, but this model also has simpler specifications. They include a MediaTek Helio P10 (MT6755) single-chip system with 8 cores and Mali-T860 graphics, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of expandable flash memory and a 5” display with a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels. The photographic functions in the smartphone are handled by two cameras that are not of the highest level by today's standards - a 13-megapixel main one with hybrid autofocus and an f/2.0 aperture, as well as a front one, built on an 8-megapixel matrix and supporting HDR mode. The Xperia XA does not have a fingerprint sensor.

Sony Xperia X Performance, Xperia X and Xperia XA will be offered in four colors - white, black, gold and pink. All three new products running the Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system are equipped with wireless modules Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n/ac), Bluetooth 4.2, NFC and GPS/GLONASS, and Xperia X Performance and Xperia X also equipped with stereo speakers on the front panel. Smartphones should go on sale this coming summer, but prices have not yet been announced.

The world of smartphones is very rich and diverse. New gadgets are created almost every day. Most brands produce devices at a variety of price points, with many unique features and functions. Some of them are constantly experimenting with the latest technologies, but often none of the developments are brought to fruition, which is why the phones can be unpredictable and have “crude” filling.

Fortunately, some popular brands have been maintaining their brand for decades and increasing their quality, and therefore deserve special attention. For example, the world-famous Japanese company Sony, being one of the most advanced smartphone manufacturers, successfully maintains its face from year to year. This means that when buying a gadget of this brand, the user can be confident in the quality, especially when it comes to the main features of the brand.

When developing Sony mobile devices, exceptional attention is paid to multimedia properties and the comfort of viewing photos and videos. Therefore, it is not surprising that all Xperia models stand out from their competitors with excellent cameras with many additional functions and filters, as well as a large and colorful display, which is also scratch-resistant. This is perhaps one of the main advantages of Japanese phones over Samsung, Panasonic, HTC, Xiaomi and other devices with vulnerable screens, which almost always require the purchase of a protective film, or even special glass.

Also, many Sonys can be praised for their excellent performance. The best representatives of the brand can work more than a day, and sometimes about two days without recharging. At the same time, the latest smartphones even have some functions similar to Apple, but unlike American flagships they are relatively inexpensive.

Of course, like many others, Sony sometimes has not the most successful models, in particular, some devices from previous years got a little warm during prolonged use, and sometimes unexpectedly slowed down. Nevertheless, these shortcomings were successfully corrected, and most smartphones of 2017 and the end of 2016 are characterized by stable operation and fast response. And the models released in 2018 also acquired a progressive filling with an emphasis on any component. Also, the manufacturer has finally begun to equip its smartphones with a powerful battery.

Top 8 best Sony smartphones

8 Sony Xperia XA2 Plus 32GB

The most powerful battery
Country: Japan
Average price: 21,350 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.5

An excellent candy bar that can be called one of the best creations of Sony. The manufacturer finally listened to users and installed a powerful 3500 mAh battery. A large battery allows you to leave the outlet for two to three days. The six-inch diagonal length combined with an 18:9 aspect ratio will please those who like to watch movies and read on their phones. Another bonus is fifth-generation Gorilla Glass screen protection.

Mini-jack is in place. The camera on the rear panel is implemented in the form of a 23-megapixel module, while the front camera only has 8 megapixels. The power of the processor from the Kvalkom 630 series will satisfy the average owner completely, and partially the gamer. Reviews express gratitude to Sony for the presence of various codecs to improve the quality of sound transmission via Bluetooth, and the main complaint is the slippery body.

7 Sony Xperia L1

Best price
A country:
Average price: 9885 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.5

2017 was marked not only by the appearance of new flagships of the Xperia line, but also by the long-awaited release of the very first inexpensive Sony model. The smartphone pleasantly surprises with its quality, which is usually unusual for budget devices. It incorporates the best basic features of the brand's popular flagships. However, as you might guess, it is not for nothing that the gadget belongs to the category of inexpensive devices.

The smartphone is made of plastic and lacks such luxury features as fingerprint scanning, water resistance and protective glass that protects the display from scratches, which, however, is not surprising at such a price. But still, the device will pleasantly surprise the owner with excellent cameras for a budget employee, good memory with the ability to install an additional card up to 256 GB and NFC. In addition, it is reliable and at the same time unpretentious. The battery capacity of 2620 mAh is enough for a day of use. This is a good indicator for an inexpensive device.

6 Sony Xperia Z5 Dual

The optimum ratio of price and quality
A country: Japan (made in China)
Average price: 13,670 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.6

Being one of the best Japanese flagships of 2015, by 2018 the smartphone had significantly reduced its price, but did not lose popularity. On the contrary, many positive reviews have proven that this now inexpensive gadget has a good build, a good battery for Sony and one of the most modern functionalities.

The phone supports two SIM cards in parallel with a memory card, which is very rare for modern smartphones, and has 2 GB of RAM and a fast 8-core processor. Both cameras, like many more expensive devices from the manufacturer, are distinguished by realistic color reproduction and good detail.

At the same time, the smartphone will pleasantly surprise you with the presence of such innovative flagship functions as NFC, fingerprint recognition and protection against splashes and water. However, it is worth remembering that we are talking about getting a small amount of non-chlorinated water on the device, and not about diving with the phone to the bottom of the pool.

5 Sony Xperia L2

Group selfie function
Country: Japan
Average price: 12990 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.7

A typical Sony brick with a balanced filling for non-resource-intensive daily tasks. The 5.5-inch screen has a basic HD resolution, but in reviews users admire the bright, rich colors and gorgeous color rendition. And in the best tradition, Sony focused on photographic abilities. The 13 megapixel main camera takes good pictures in sufficient lighting conditions, but the real juice is in the front module.

The group selfie function allows you to take collective selfies without using a selfie stick, and in such a way that everyone can easily fit into the frame. Otherwise, this is one of the best smartphones: the tactile sensations are pleasant, the performance is sufficient, the screen is large, and the price segment is budget.

4 Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact

Compact dimensions
Country: Japan
Average price: 42,500 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.7

Perhaps the only modern smartphone from Sony without angular shapes. Slightly smoothed corners and sloping edges are not all the unusual features in this Sony. The screen diagonal is only 5 inches, and the device was released in 2018. The model will be the best joy for those who are not accustomed to large-format phones and are looking for a productive and progressive smartphone that is convenient to operate with one hand.

Inside there is the eighth Android, a 19-megapixel camera, 4 GB of RAM and the still top-end Snapdragon 845 processor. It has water resistance, support for fast charging, a fingerprint scanner and stereo speakers. The camera is good: laser autofocus, fixed macro mode, F/2 aperture. In the reviews, owners only complain about the battery - it barely lasts for a day, but they praise the ergonomics - the smartphone fits perfectly in the hand.

3 Sony Xperia XZ Premium

Best screen
A country: Japan (made in China)
Average price: 29990 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.8

The premium gadget can easily be called the best of the three smartphones with a 4K screen, which has no analogues either from Samsung or other competitors. After all, only Sony has a display with this resolution. What does 3840 by 2160 pixels have to do with it - it’s not just an impressive figure or PR, but the ability to watch movies in excellent quality, comparable to the most modern TVs. In addition, the 5.5-inch screen is not only very colorful and capable of conveying the smallest details, but is also highly protected from scratches.

However, comfortable viewing would be impossible without a powerful 3230 mAh battery, which allows you to watch movies all day without being distracted by recharging. Of course, the smartphone lasts much longer in standby mode. Therefore, with less active use, it can easily go without recharging for several days. The phone also boasts good speakers with stereo effect and 4 GB of RAM.

2 Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra 32GB

Best camera
A country: Japan (made in China)
Average price: 18,250 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.8

The first thing that catches your eye is the almost complete absence of side frames. Surprisingly, Sony managed to combine its traditional “brick” design with the latest fashion trends, although the smartphone never became completely frameless.

Like many Xperia, the device is equipped with a colorful, durable screen, fast charging function, a good battery and high-quality speakers. Thanks to the amount of RAM that reaches 4 GB, internal memory of 32 GB and a powerful 8-core processor, the phone can easily cope with multitasking and watching movies in high definition.

However, the main advantage of this smartphone is still its cameras. They both have flashes and therefore take great pictures in any lighting. The record resolution of 16 MP front camera and 23 MP rear camera, combined with optical stabilization, make this smartphone a real find for lovers of high-quality photos.

1 Sony Xperia XZs Dual 64GB

Most functional
A country: Japan (made in China)
Average price: 22,500 rub.
Rating (2019): 4.9

Released in 2017, the smartphone deservedly immediately became one of the best flagships of that year and still holds its position. Although the appearance of the Xperia still remains unchanged and can hardly be called innovative, the device will delight the buyer with the most modern and useful functions, including fingerprint scanning, fast charging, etc.

Also, the device will definitely be appreciated by lovers of high-quality photos and selfies, since both cameras have a high resolution of 3840x2160 and excellent detail. The sound doesn't lag behind either. Thanks to stereo speakers, the smartphone produces good surround sound.

In addition, it supports alternate operation of two SIM cards, is protected from moisture, and its screen is scratch-resistant. And, perhaps, the most pleasant thing: despite the rich and well-thought-out functionality, the phone can be called relatively inexpensive in comparison with its closest competitors that have similar functionality.
