Which is simply called iPad. He came to changing iPad Air 2. Now there are only three models in the Apple tablet family - iPad Pro, iPad and iPad mini 4. MacDigger offers a comparison of the 9.7-inch modifications of the iPad and iPad Pro.

The presented iPad uses the Apple A9 processor versus the third generation A9X with 64-bit architecture in the iPad Pro. Compared to the A8, the chip in the new iPad is 1.6 times faster and the graphics are 1.8 times faster. The firmware processor is 1.85 times faster than the A8, and its graphics are 2.7 times faster.

In terms of display characteristics, the tablet remains the same - Retina with a resolution of 2048 × 1536 pixels. However, iPad panels Pro has a number of advantages. Firstly, it is a fully laminated display with anti-reflective coating, making it more comfortable to use the device outdoors. In addition, the screen has an extended color gamut (P3) and supports True Tone.

The iPad has a fingerprint scanner finger touch ID and accumulator battery, allowing the device to work without recharging for up to 10 hours. iPad Pro offers the same capabilities. Moreover, the latter has more quality cameras– 12-megapixel main and 5-megapixel front. The iPad 2017 has two cameras with a resolution of 8 and 1.2 megapixels.

Other important difference between models – lack of support Apple SIM The new iPad has two speakers instead of four. Also, the new product of 2017 will not be able to offer the function Live Photo s and video shooting in 4K. Only iPad Pro users will be able to use Apple Pencil. The thickness of the iPad is 7.5 mm versus 6.1 mm for the Pro version. More weight - 469 versus 437 grams.

Apple offers the new iPad in versions with 32 and 128 GB of memory. The price starts at 24,990 rubles (modification without LTE). The most expensive 128 GB version with support cellular communications will cost 41,990 rubles. The tablet is available in gold, silver and dark gray body colors.

The first impression of the announcement of the iPad Pro 9.7’’ depends entirely on general attitude to Apple. If fans of the company immediately find a thousand uses for it and a million reasons why they can’t live without this tablet, then skeptics again start talking about internal competition and oversaturation of the model range. Essentially, we are dealing with the "powerful" iPad Air 2; or with the “small” iPad Pro; or... Be that as it may, the time when Apple chose for us, providing one smartphone and one tablet, is irrevocably passed. The line of i-gadgets is taking the form of a line of MacBooks - soon, perhaps, we will already be adding to long name with a mention of the diagonal and version (Air or Pro) and the release date in the “early 2016” style.

Being neither a fan nor an opponent of the company from Cupertino, I can only say that the choice is good. Apple is slowly moving away from the path of artificial restrictions, and in the person of the strange at first glance “small big” it gives us its very own universal tablet: thin, compact and powerful at the same time.

Appearance and ergonomics

Apple iPad Pro 9.7, front panel: above the screen - front-camera, below the screen is the Home button

It's difficult to choose epithets when talking about the design of the next iPad. It's the same as the old one, only new. Buyers of the iPad Pro 9.7'' will not be able to impress anyone by posting their new tablet on the table - outwardly it does not differ from the iPad Air 2: filling powerful tablet simply housed in the well-known thinnest and lightest housing. Only a few details distinguish it. Firstly, the camera. Secondly, additional speakers on the top edge of the case - the iPad Pro sounds much more powerful than the iPad Air. Thirdly, there is a contact pad for the Smart Keyboard on the left (or bottom in horizontal orientation) side.

The tablet is offered in four, not three, like the “large” iPad Pro, colors: the sacred “rose gold” has been added to silver, gold, and “space gray.” Apple really loves this color - let's remember that now even MacBooks are offered in it (just MacBook). The body of the new iPad, as always, is covered with metal on the back and a sheet of glass on the front. This gadget does not need any changes in appearance - it is still one of the most beautiful tablets in the world, and I am still careful in my statements.

We copy the dimensions from the iPad Air 2 specifications: 240 × 169.5 × 6.1 mm. The weight comes from the same place: 437-444 grams, depending on the type of radio module installed. By talking about the iPad Pro as a laptop replacement, we get an additional trump card in the form of real rather than relative compactness. You use the iPad Pro 9.7’’ according to the usual scenarios - no one looks at you like you’re crazy if you take out such a tablet on the subway, and your hands don’t get tired if you hold it up for a long time, watching a movie on it in bed.

Apple iPad Pro 9.7, top edge: power button, mini-jack for headphones and two more speakers

With the seat belt fastened Smart keyboard It also works with the Keyboard much more readily than before - the tablet does not outweigh the fragile fabric accessory, so placing the tablet on your lap and typing is no longer scary. But six months after the announcement of the first iPad Pro, Apple still hasn’t come up with a slot for storing the Apple Pencil, or a way to charge it other than plugging it into Lightning, with every second the risk of touching the pen and breaking it along with the connector.

The Home key has a fingerprint scanner built into it, it works quickly and smoothly.

The set of other accessories is standard: various cases, Smart Cover and so on. It is very important that cases from the iPad Air 2 will also fit here, so if you decide to increase the power and switch to the iPad Pro, you won’t have to invest money in accessories either. There is only one subtle point - in this case you will have to sacrifice the flash for the rear camera; in old cases, of course, there is no slot for it.

There are no engineering mistakes, like with charging the Pencil: there is no need to charge the keyboard, it is powered directly from the tablet through the connection pad; recognized instantly screen keyboard turns off; The item dedicated to Smart Keyboard appears in the menu only when the keyboard is activated. Another thing is that at this very point you can only change the layout type, no additional settings.

The layout is almost identical to the regular MacBook or iMac layout, except for the block function keys and, as a result, the Fn button - instead of it the key fast switching languages. Most of the combinations familiar to Mac also work here - only commands directly related to MacOS do not work; different operating system means different laws, you can find them out by holding Command for a few seconds.

Using the Smart Keyboard is a real pleasure; Apple knows a lot about tactility. The fabric covering is pleasant to the touch and does not collect fingerprints, the size of the keys is optimal, although at first it seems that problems are inevitable. And, most importantly, the buttons have a very fast and pleasant action. How Apple managed to do this on a keyboard case is a mystery, but working on the Smart Keyboard doesn’t feel too different from working on regular Apple Keyboard with an additional bonus in the form of a pleasant to the touch rough coating.

This is strictly an optional accessory; it will not turn the iPad Pro 9.7'' into a full-fledged laptop, although it will add an additional dimension to the tablet's use case. The main limiting factor is the lack of Cyrillic engraving; If you don't have touch typing skills, it will be difficult for you to use Smart Keyboard. And, of course, the price - the keyboard case costs this moment 12-13 thousand rubles.

Maximum permissible value The SAR for mobile devices in Europe is 2 W/kg per 10 grams of human tissue. This standard established by the CENELEC committee in compliance with the ICNIRP guidelines of 1998 and IEC standards.

Video review of Apple iPad Pro 9.7

Design

Despite the general similarity between all produced iPads, they do have differences. The Pro 9.7 is best compared to the Air 2, they are the most similar to each other. The differences on the body are as follows: the camera now protrudes, like in the iPhone 6 and 6s;

a smart connector has appeared for connecting a smart case with a keyboard;

The antenna cover in the LTE version is no longer black or white, but matches the color of the body, which is much more aesthetically pleasing;

There are already four speakers on the case, I’ll tell you about them a little below.

Display

Most attention was paid to the display. And it’s really better than Air 2 and even Pro 12.9. Firstly, it glares as much as 40% less, and this is not 15-20%, which may not be noticed. Secondly, there are four light sensors installed here (don’t ask where, I don’t know) to correctly adjust the color tone to the environment, a function called True Tone. And the function actually works, and not as hard as Night Shift and is not annoying, but if you turn it on and off, you can immediately notice how the color changes.

And for the rest of the numbers, the screen is the same as in Air 2: resolution 2048 x 1536 pixels, pixel density is 264 per inch, display diagonal is 9.7″. And from the adult “proshka” it migrated Apple support Pencil. So, drawing lovers can now consider not only the large version.

Cameras

What new iPad about no equal - in the cells. It has the same setup as the iPhone 6s: the main camera is 12 MP, the front camera is 5 MP. Videos can be recorded up to 4K, slow motion at 240 fps at 720p and 120 fps at 1080p resolution. There's even digital image stabilization! In short, iPadography to the masses! Now we can safely say that the camera here is not just the best among tablets, but one of the best in mobile devices in general. But I don’t know who needs it. I would not consider the camera as the main or decisive criterion when choosing a tablet.

Some example photos

Sound

As I said above, the iPad Pro 9.7 has four speakers, just like the larger iPad Pro. But, unfortunately, the reduction in size also affected the sound. It is loud, clear, but inferior in volume. I really liked the big iPad Pro because it can be easily upgraded small room. This is also cool for video, because there is no shame in watching YouTube or even a movie on its screen, and just for listening to tracks. Here the sound is much flatter. Although in terms of quality and volume it is still far ahead MacBook Air 13.

Performance

The tablet is very fast, without any corrections. The most top processor Apple A9X, as in the large iPad Pro, which theoretically should move even faster, because the display resolution is lower - like in the Air 2. But the RAM in the small Pro is 2 GB, let me remind you, in the 12.9″ model it is 4 GB. But the built-in memory can be up to 256 GB, the same version is now available for the large model. Regarding RAM, I don’t see any particular problem here; for iOS, 2 GB, as they say, is enough. Some nuances may begin to appear in a few years, but I would not attach much importance to this, because today everything mobile gadgets Apple is equipped with 2 GB of RAM, only the Pro 12.9″ has four. The company will not take and bury all these devices because of the amount of RAM; Apple will adapt its software so that the hardware remains relevant for another 2-3 years. Well, because of the 4 GB of RAM, I’m not ready to use the very large Pro.

Naturally, given standard definition display, right now, immediately after the release of the model, there are no problems with the compatibility of any software, including games. Let me remind you that the big firmware did not launch some games correctly. As you would expect, everything goes very quickly, including tanks at the most maximum settings graphics.

I won’t say anything about autonomy, except that they claim it at 10 hours. Honestly, it was simply not possible to land it completely and do it in several modes: with Wi-Fi and with 3G. If the tablet stays with me longer, I will definitely do some operating experience.

Who needs it?

In the end, let's think about who needs this tablet. My personal opinion is for those who need everything at once in a fairly compact body, but who else or not Apple tablet, or there is, but old. My recommendation is this: if you have an iPad with 1 GB of RAM, it's worth buying. If it’s 2 GB, I don’t see the point in upgrading, because that means you just recently bought an iPad. They already come into force here low frequency queries. For example, you may need an Apple Pencil - yes, this option is possible. Or do you need great camera on a tablet, maybe you are using a long-lived smartphone due to some circumstances and it doesn’t have a good camera. Or you just want it for yourself and can afford it – that’s also an option. But I don’t see the point in upgrading, for example, from the iPad Air 2, or from the Mini 4. And even if you’re just planning to buy a new tablet right now, Pro 9.7 is the best, but not the only one correct option even for the demanding user. The top version with 256 GB will cost you 1030 bucks, and the base version with 32 will cost you 600. Therefore, buying a second Air with 64 GB for 500 will be more profitable, it will easily handle everything that the firmware does.

By the way, some people can easily exchange their large iPad Pro for this one. For example, if it was purchased for specific purposes, but the person never got used to the size. Now there is an alternative, which, moreover, is even better in some ways. Who do you think needs this tablet?
