Wireless router TP-Link WR1043ND. TL-WR1043ND. Wireless router. Review and testing

Today we will talk about a very popular product developed by TP-Link Technologies Co., Ltd, which has become well known in the world market in last years. Since 2009, TP-Link has also been operating in Russia, according to official history.

The Russian representative office includes two divisions: the main support of the company - sales department, as well as its main defensive line - technical support department.

So, TL-WR1043ND. Despite the fact that this device is listed as a new product on the manufacturer’s website, many people have it, and a lot is known about it. If you are thinking about purchasing or have already consciously made your choice, we strongly recommend that you visit the information about this device located in our conference. The editors reviewed a router of revision 1.7, but note that a device of a newer revision 1.8 has been available in retail for a long time. At the end of the review, the author will express some personal thoughts on this matter.

In general, it is already clear from the specifications that this is a representative of a “good” level for home use.

Equipment. External inspection of the device

The device is supplied in a medium-sized cardboard box with high-quality printing in pleasant light green tones - this is a unified design style for the products (Fig. 1). All information is presented in English only.

In addition to the router, the delivery package (indicated on the box) should include a power supply, several product brochures, an English-language Quick Installation Guide, a category 5e patch cord (1 Gbps connection) a little more than a meter long, a CD with electronic versions of instructions for the company’s devices and a utility quick setup.

Rice. 1

The device is made of high quality plastic. Color scheme - black and white. It looks relatively strict and attractive, while the bright green LEDs and the QSS (Quick Secure Setup) button area of the same color on the front panel add some “refinement”. Due to the contrast, the device is noticeable in the environment, but in this case it is a dubious advantage. It looks too sterile and out of place in the author’s home interior.

The top panel bears only the silver company logo. The bottom surface has everything you need - elastic legs, technological holes for wall mounting (in three positions) and information with the name, serial number model, factory data - IP, login/password, MAC address, PIN (for QSS). There are also ventilation holes, but the device does not heat up much during operation, so their value is nominal.

Rice. 2

Let's look at the front (information) panel (Fig. 3). From left to right - indicators for power (PWR), system operation (SYS - blinks in normal mode, lights up - during an error and at startup), wireless point operation (WLAN), four LAN ports of the built-in switch (4-1), WAN port indicators, USB and QSS enable modes are located to the right, then the QSS enable button (in the rest of the world this is WPS technology).

Rice. 3

The rear panel is shown in Fig. 4. Again, from left to right - power connector, recessed Reset button (short press to reset, pressing for more than 5 seconds returns to factory settings), USB connector, WAN port, LAN ports 1-4, as well as three removable antennas wireless module.

Rice. 4

Let's look at the internal composition. Zentel A3S56D40FTP-G5 module (66 pins) 32 MB random access memory, flash memory Spansion FL064PIF 8 MB, network processor WNPU (Wireless Network Processing Unit) Atheros AR9132-BC1E 400 MHz, Ethernet controller RTL8366RB, Atheros AR9103 WLAN controller.

Rice. 5

It becomes clear why the device is so popular - for its price it has quite powerful hardware, especially since when using the router in non-warranty conditions ( third party firmware, fine-tuning by hand) its potential can be further increased, for example, by replacing RAM/ROM memory modules with more capacious analogues.

Web interface

For review, version 3.12.2 Build 100820 Rel.41891n was installed from the company’s website.

All conclusions, reflections, comments and guesses are based only on the “stock” capabilities of the device. This is the latest official non-test firmware.

So, enter the IP address (192.168.1.1), password and login (admin) in the browser and get to home page(Status) of the web interface. It is entirely in English, which is very convenient from the point of view of an advanced user, but not so convenient for a person who is not familiar with such devices and the English language. The design is simple and done in corporate colors, but everything is very convenient due to the classic layout of the elements. On the left is a list for selecting device settings, the central part is occupied by the main settings window, on the right is a panel describing what is presented in the central part. The description is very good, detailed and with examples - it’s a pleasure to work with it.

Rice. 6

Status
System information window: device and software version, LAN address of the router, wireless network settings, type and settings of WAN connection, traffic statistics, information about uptime (lifetime of continuous operation).

Quick Setup
Window step-by-step wizard connection settings to the provider. The author uses a “white” static IP. Auto-detection of connection type is available and works correctly.

QSS
Window for enabling and setting up WPS (simple organization of a secure wireless network). You can either enter the PIN of the connected device, or, by pressing buttons on both devices, “pair” them into automatic mode. The router PIN can be changed.

Network
This section contains settings for Ethernet ports. The LAN sub-item allows you to change the device’s IP address and network mask, and you can set a clone of the adapter’s MAC address (for the provider) in the MAC Clone sub-item. The WAN sub-item contains all the settings for connecting to the Internet. The manufacturer has provided the following connection types: Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE/PPPoE Russia, L2TP/L2TP Russia, PPTP/PPTP Russia. The BigPond Cable type refers to a large Australian provider and has nothing to do with us. All tunnel connection types are without encryption, no IPsec, no OpenVPN.

Russian versions of tunnel connections assume that dual access is configured - both to the Internet and to internal network resources, but in our conditions this is relevant. You can also configure the connection behavior for them - automatic when idle, connection at the user's request, and for PPPoE you can set a schedule.

It should be noted that there is no possibility of having two different channels and providers - there can only be one connection. For most users this feature is of little importance, but for some it is very important.

Wireless
The wireless access point settings are included in several sub-items and are typical for devices of this class. Wireless Hotspot is enabled by default. There can only be one wireless network.

In the Wireless Settings sub-item you can set and hide your SSID, the Russia region is present, channels are set manually up to 13 (for Russia) and automatically. Wireless modes: 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, 802.11bg, 802.11bgn. For 802.11n modes, you can set the channel width to auto, 20 MHz, 40 MHz. You can also set the maximum throughput to 300 Mbps. Hidden here is a useful Survey button for surveying all existing wireless networks for their settings. Access to the button appears after selecting the WDS mode.

Rice. 12

You can protect your wireless network with using WEP, WPA1/2, WPA-PSK1/2 (in the Wireless Security sub-item), hiding the SSID in the previous tab, organizing blocking/allowing lists of MAC filters (MAC Filtering sub-item). 802.11n requires WPA-PSK2 with AES algorithm.

In the Wireless Advanced sub-item, you can “play around” with some wireless network parameters, as well as set the transmitter power (Low, Middle, High). Enabling higher priority for media packets is done here.

Rice. 13

The small sub-item Wireless Statistics shows the connected wireless stations.

DHCP
In the DHCP Settings sub-item, you can enable DHCP, configure the range of distributed IP addresses, the issuance time in minutes, set the standard gateway and network domain, and also set the addresses of two external DNS servers of the provider.

You can view all existing connections in the DHCP Clients List. The Address Reservation sub-item allows you to create a list of IP addresses reserved for clients (by MAC).

Network Sharing
The item controls access and settings of the router’s USB port. In the Sharing Service sub-item, you can enable/disable the service, configure the resource name on the network, and set the access level to the device (login and password) in the User Accounts sub-item. Access is provided at the administrator level - read/write, and at the guest level - read only.

Rice. 14

Rice. 15

It’s worth noting right away that, in the author’s humble opinion, in the “stock” firmware the functionality of the USB port is more “for show”. There is no access from the external network, no FTP server, no print server (although the developers promised to implement this function in new firmware), no web server, only FAT32 and NTFS file systems are supported. Performance test results are in the corresponding section.

External HDD Transcend (Hitachi) - 120 GB (FAT32/NTFS) and Transcend Storejet Ultra 3.5 500 GB (NTFS) were identified without problems. Flash keychains of different denominations were also identified.

Forwarding
The section includes typical settings for virtual servers (selecting the TCP/UDP/ALL protocol, setting the server IP address, choosing from the main network services), port forwarding (TCP/UDP/ALL protocol type, setting a switch port, setting a port/range /ranges of incoming ports), launching a demilitarized zone on the specified IP, enabling the UPnP service (the allowed Universal Plug and Play service allows applications to independently organize port forwarding without user intervention).

Security
The paragraph has several subparagraphs. Basic Security contains settings for enabling/disabling the SPI firewall, allowing transit of tunnel connections, and enabling application-level gateways for basic services.

Rice. 19

The Advanced Security subsection manages protection against flood attacks. Works when traffic control statistics are enabled in System section Tools.

Rice. 20

You can set up to 5 local network clients to access the web interface (Local Management sub-item), and also allow/deny access to it from the external network either for a specific IP address or for all addresses (Remote Management sub-item).

Parental Control
Used to set " parental control» over specific router clients (identification by MAC address). One MAC address can set up to 8 domain names that can be accessed. Rules can also be executed according to schedules created in the Shedule sub-item of the Access Control section.

Access Control
An effective and detailed Internet access control tool that allows you to create admission rules by simply combining three settings - Host, Target and Shedule based on the principle of “who-where-when” you can allow. The Host sub-item contains a list of controlled IP/MAC addresses; you can set a range for IP. The Target sub-item is a list of specific domain names to which the access rule will be applied. In this case, you can set not only a domain name (up to 4), but also an IP address/domain range and a port range (you can use it from the list of basic network services). The Shedule sub-item contains time schedules - by day of the week, time to turn the rule on/off (up to minutes).

Advanced Routing
Table for setting up static routes; you can also view existing ones in the System Routing Table sub-item.

Bandwidth Control
The item contains convenient flexible settings for channel allocation rules for user groups. Bandwidth can be set both for a range of addresses and for one client by IP address.

It is for home network It may not be so necessary, but for small offices it is a good help for management and administrators. Together with the IP address reserve in the DHCP settings, we get another flexible and simple means for managing traffic and, therefore, workflow.

IP&MAC Binding
Settings item for assigning a specific IP specific MAC address. The list of client data is located in the ARP List sub-item.

Dynamic DNS
In this version, settings are available for three external DNS servers: www.comexe.cn, www.dyndns.org, www.no-ip.com.

System Tools
The section contains all system settings for the router: setting the time, loading firmware, resetting settings, rebooting the device, backup/restore settings (in the form of a config.bin file), changing the factory login/password, maintaining a detailed system log (export to syslog.txt ), traffic control statistics.

In the router, useful information is included in a separate Diagnostic sub-item. network commands ping and traceroute. It's comfortable.

The interface is fast and convenient, no flaws or dampness were noticed.

Performance testing

In this part of the review, we will test the router’s throughput when using NAT, as well as the data transfer speed of the internal local network using wireless and Ethernet adapters. Testing was carried out on computers running Windows XP SP3, Windows 7 x86, using NetIQ software (High_Performance_Throughput script, TCP), NetWorx.

An apartment in a multi-storey block-type building was used as the environment for the testing object. Security settings: internal SPI firewall enabled, authentication type - WPA-PSK2, encryption algorithm - AES, channel - Auto, mode - 802.11n, channel width - 40 MHz.

The following were used in testing:

  • LAN adapters - Marvell Yukon Gigabit Ehernet Controller, Realtek Gigabit Ethernet NIC;
  • Wi-Fi adapter - TP-Link TL-WN822N 300 Mbit/s.

When testing NAT, one of the clients connected to the WAN port of the router, the second client connected to one of four LAN ports. The IP address of the second client was specified when creating the DMZ zone. When testing the wireless part, client No. 2 was the LAN adapter.

From 3 to 5 measurements were carried out for each scenario. The best result was chosen.

Rice. 26

Due to the fact that the stock firmware does not support encrypted tunnel connections (and access is only available to this type), it was not possible to encapsulate them on the device to check the “ceiling”. In the mode when the tunnel (PPTP) from the workstation was enabled and the router acted as a transport, testing the www.speedtest.net connection produced the following results.

Rice. 27

For of this tariff These are normal values and you can probably get results close to the WAN port ceiling.

To test the torrent protocol, utorent was used. 10 downloads were created, client settings - up to 600 connections, no Uld/Dld traffic restrictions. The maximum results obtained for a wired adapter and a WLAN adapter are shown in the graph.

The program has a built-in utility for measuring the theoretical connection speed with various servers (by Measurement Lab). The fastest servers were UK London and DE Hamburg. The maximum result is on the graph.

Rice. 28

Device USB port performance for LAN/WLAN clients. Used for testing USB drives Flash and HDD Transcend 120 GB. Testing maximum performance media was carried out in CrystalDiskMark software, and during the direct read/write test, measurements were taken using the NetWorx utility.

conclusions

So we met interesting device TP-Link company. Along with strengths it also has weaknesses. Note that rebooting the TP-Link WR1043ND takes quite a long time, and during operation, cases of the device freezing while actively “playing” with the settings were identified. And the functionality is not enough for a model with such a set of hardware. Next, about something completely unpleasant. The author is reliably aware of two cases of defective TL-WR1043ND revision 1.8 being returned within a week - apparently from the same batch. One worked for several hours, the second for several days.

    Advantages:
  • Excellent assembly, thoughtful ergonomics, pleasant appearance;
  • Possibility to place the device as you wish;
  • Excellent speed in all modes and for all supported connection types;
  • Convenient and friendly interface;
  • Stable operation, low heating;
  • Excellent wireless module signal;
  • Excellent development of control and access functions;
  • The manufacturer does not forget about the device.
    Flaws:
  • No encryption support for tunnel connections (

Wi-Fi router TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND – real 802.11n in action

Visited our test laboratory wireless router TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND standard 802.11n. Paired with the TP-LINK TL-WN821N adapter, it showed excellent data transfer speeds. Overall, the router turned out to be a very functional device.

⇣ Contents

The final version of the Wi-Fi 802.11n standard was adopted more than a year ago. This gives hope that soon wireless networks in homes or small offices will finally replace the usual Ethernet. However, so far all this network modernization is limited by the incomplete compatibility of devices from different manufacturers. But if you decide to build a network on the equipment of one company, then there should not be any special problems. And what a benefit! Firstly, no extra wires and no melancholy in the eyes when looking under the table. Secondly, Wi-Fi speed The connection in this case is quite comparable to that with a wired connection, and for typical home-office needs it is quite enough. After all, routers with 802.11n support have long ceased to be expensive exotics, and modern laptops are often equipped with adapters that support this standard. We examined the possibility of creating a fast wireless network using the example of a combination of a TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND router and a TP-LINK TL-WN821N USB adapter.

⇡ Equipment and appearance

Both devices are packaged in cardboard boxes decorated in bright light green. color scheme. The boxes contain information about the main capabilities and characteristics of the devices. Inside each package there are trays made of thick cardboard, which protect the devices from various troubles during transportation.

The TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND router comes with three removable antennas, a compact and lightweight external power supply, a meter-long patch cord, a disk with documentation, a quick guide, as well as a whole pack of advertising brochures, a warranty card and other paper tinsel. All this is very neatly packaged, placed in separate bags and does not dangle inside the box.

The configuration of the TP-LINK TL-WN821N adapter is simpler. The buyer will find in the box only a 0.5 m long USB extension cable, a disk with drivers and the same set of advertising brochures. In general, in both cases the scope of delivery is minimal. On the other hand, it’s hard to imagine what else so interesting could be put in boxes with a router and a wireless adapter.

The latter, by the way, is unusually large - 94x11x26 mm. Its body is made of plastic: white on top and black on the sides and bottom. Under the top cover there is an activity indicator, which is visible only during operation. At one end there is a button to launch QSS (Quick Secure Setup) - a function for easily setting up a network connection. If you have devices that support this standard, then establishing communication between them is as simple as pressing a couple of buttons. For non-advanced users (that is, housewives) this is very convenient. The included disk also contains the QSS for Windows program, which performs a similar function.

Due to the large size of the TP-LINK TL-WN821N, it is probably not in the best possible way Suitable for use with laptops or netbooks. And no one has canceled the problem of ever-losing caps. However, on the TP-LINK TL-WN821N the cover fits quite tightly on the USB connector. Well, for those who plan to use the adapter with desktop machines, it is better to take the TP-LINK TL-WN821NC model. It is completely identical to the one described, but it comes with a special cradle for the adapter, to which you can attach a cap so as not to lose it.

The router body is made of glossy milky white plastic with matte black inserts on the sides. There is a silver TP-LINK logo on the top cover.

On the front, under a glossy black plastic insert, there is a row of LEDs Green colour. These are indicators of power availability, router status, activity network connections, connections external storage and the current operating mode of QSS.

There is a separate button on the right to launch the QSS function.

There is an information sticker on the bottom of the device that indicates the model and serial number of the router, its MAC address, as well as the IP address and default login password (to access the web interface). Here are a couple of blocks ventilation holes and four non-slip rubber feet. Also at the bottom there are two T-shaped recesses for screws, designed for attaching the router to the wall in any convenient position.

All ports and connectors are traditionally located on the back wall: three sockets for Wi-Fi antennas, gigabit Ethernet ports (4xLAN and 1xWAN), power connector, USB 2.0 port and a router reset button recessed into the case.

In terms of dimensions, TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND is not very different from other modern routers - 200x28x140 mm. Externally, the device looks quite nice - it will probably fit well into almost any home or office environment.

Almost everyone has encountered a situation where the Internet is connected to an apartment or house with the ability to connect only one device. The provider rarely takes upon himself the implementation of multi-user access from the consumer to the World Wide Web. In fact, such a function is not beneficial for him and is expensive. What should the average person do when he wants to access the Internet not only from his desktop computer, but also from a laptop, smartphone or finally a tablet? All this functionality is provided by a group of devices called Wi-Fi routers. Another question that a buyer should ask himself when choosing a network solution is what data transfer speed within a home or small office network does he need? If you need Internet access for easy viewing pages, it is natural that even the most inexpensive modern Wi-Fi router can handle such a load. However, if you plan to transfer large files between clients on your internal network or watch high-resolution videos, then it’s worth thinking about a better investment and getting a fairly powerful Wi-Fi router. For the above tasks, a solution that supports data transfer using the N standard at connection speeds of 300 Mbit/s and Gigabit is suitable. Ethernet ports, which will provide throughput up to 1000 Mbit/s. One of these, relatively available solutions, is the model TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND.

In this article, we would like to draw the reader’s attention to the products of the TP-LINK company and, in particular, to a Wi-Fi access point with the functions of a network router and the ability to connect to a provider via a Gigabit Ethernet port using the Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, L2TP, PPTP protocols, BigPond Cable, model TL-WR1043ND.

The specification of this model emphasizes its high functionality, as well as high speed capabilities. This is quite natural, since the model is the flagship of the line of wireless routers from TP-LINK. The characteristics themselves were collected based on the information presented on the manufacturer’s website and on the actual capabilities of the built-in WEB interface of the tested router itself.

Package

The design of the outer packaging is quite typical for wireless solution models from the manufacturer TP-LINK. Its outer part is made of glossy cardboard paper using light green printing tones. Sufficiently contrasting inscriptions are well readable in white and green tones background picture. The TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND wireless router itself is shown here, and to the left of it are all the main features of this model.

Highlighted here:

    high performance model TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND,

    the ability to operate a wireless channel at a speed of 300 Mbit/s,

    using Gigabit Ethernet ports to connect to a wired network,

    the ability to connect USB drives, which provides this model with the functionality of a budget file server home network.

Below are the logos of the supported network standards and technologies used in this solution.

On the sides, the manufacturer provides a fairly detailed specification of this solution and the recommended system requirements for the user’s computer. The router model is also indicated here. The second side contains graphic instructions installation and “activation” of this solution. There is also a sticker with service information and firmware version.

The back of the package is, as always, the most informative. Here, a brief instruction in pictures immediately attracts attention, which describes the connection diagram for this solution. Below are schematic diagrams of devices that can connect to the TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND via Wi-Fi wireless communication channels. The lower part shows the interface panel of this router. All connectors are labeled on it, with a modest description of their purpose. On the right the manufacturer gives comparison table capabilities of the entire current line of wireless routers and access points from TP-LINK. The model discussed in this material is the flagship of the line, which provides it with the best functionality among the wireless solutions of this manufacturer. At the top there is a short description of what this solution can do and why using it makes it easier to access the network. There is also a list of all the main features of the TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND model and its technological features. The positioning of this equipment as a router for Internet access in a home network or small office network is emphasized here.

Equipment

The package contents of the TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND model, although it looks quite modest, is such a set for devices with this functionality additional elements quite justified. You can also note the presence in the “top” solution of more than complete accompanying documentation.

The kit contains:

    CD with documentation;

    Brief and extended user manual in English, as well as brief instructions for installation and maintenance software;

    Power supply from external network.

Router and Wi-Fi point TP-LINK access TL-WR1043ND

Model TL-WR1043ND has a snow-white rectangular body with rounded edges. Silver lettering mirror letters on the top surface of the case, TP-LINK stands out strongly with its shine on white matte background general execution. It is located in a small niche, which will partially protect it from mechanical influences. The router itself, due to the slight matte finish of all its sides, except for the front with an operation indication, can be called very practical and completely protected from possible damage to its surface. The main white body, combined with dark elements on the sides and the same dark color three antennas that rise above the entire structure, looks stylish and thoughtful. We have already encountered such a performance in other, older network solutions from TP-LINK company. This housing design can be called standard for this manufacturer. So to speak, “a case tested by time.”

The front panel provides high-quality information content of all operating modes of this model. All information displayed here about router states is quite easy to understand for end user. There is an indication of the operation of the LAN ports of the internal network segment and the wireless section of the WLAN. There is an indication of the incoming WAN port connected to the provider's line. Good functionality, and in particular the presence of a file server operating mode, was added to this model by a USB interface activity indicator. Also pleasing is the presence of a separate “QSS” indicator, which signals the operation of the automatic wireless network setup system. For other manufacturers, this is assigned to the flickering mode of the power indicator. Of course, on the front panel there is also an alarm for the router’s power supply, as well as its operating modes. In total, the front panel of the TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND router can be noted for its full information content and sufficient brightness of the indicator diodes themselves.

On the right side there is a button for quickly setting up a wireless network QSS (Quick Security Setup). By pressing it, the connection mechanism for wireless network clients is activated, and channel encryption is set using an automatically generated password.

The well-thought-out functional design of the case is emphasized by fairly effective ventilation grilles on both sides. They are quite enough to cool the internal elements of the router.

Looking at the back of the TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND model from left to right, we first see the first of three SMA connectors for connecting external antennas. Behind it comes: the power supply socket, then the recessed “RESET” button ( hot reboot router and reset it to factory settings), followed by a USB connector and a bluish WAN socket for connecting an external network or provider network. Also on the rear panel there are four Gigabit Ethernet network connectors, which are highlighted in yellow. Computers on the internal network are connected to them.

The bottom side of the TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND model does not differ in its design style from the overall design. It is worth noting the presence of three-sided mounts that allow you to hang the router on a wall, and high-quality rubber feet in each corner of the case for installation on a horizontal surface. There are also small ventilation holes here.

To summarize, it is worth noting the desire of the developers who created this wireless router to make it as simple as possible in design, but quite a productive and functional solution.

WEB interface

All manufacturers are trying to provide their products with the ability to quickly and easily configure complex router functionality. For the TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND model, there are four ways to quickly configure the wireless channel and basic functions.

It's quite simple. You just need to enter the PIN code indicated next to the serial number of the model and set the name of the wireless network. The system itself will generate an access password to the wireless segment and create the wireless network itself. As a result, you will connect to the networks that are connected to the router, which will provide access to them.

The second configuration algorithm, which is located on the included optical disk, can be considered very clear, but as universal as possible. Using it, you can not only set up a wireless network, but also program the algorithm for accessing the Internet provider’s network with maximum flexibility. Automatic launch of the disk displays a window in which you need to select the router model you want to configure.

Then the installer language is selected and sufficient information is given detailed diagram connecting wires to this solution.

There is a detailed description of the operating states of all indicators on the front panel of the router.

After analyzing the networks connected to this router, the system will offer to configure access to the provider’s channel (Internet).

Then you will need to specify the name of the wireless network being created and the method of encryption, as well as the access password.

There is an easier way to configure a wireless channel through the QSS (Quick Security Setup) button. In this case, the system itself will come up with a password and set the encryption method, and also connect your PC or laptop to wireless channel.

The functionality of quick step-by-step configuration of the TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND router also has a built-in WEB interface. Its first page is the general status of the settings of this model “Status”, which allows you to evaluate all its main parameters.

Immediately below it there is a “Quick Setup” invitation to quickly set up. In most cases for standard connection a simple configuration algorithm is quite enough.

However, when buying such a universal and relatively expensive router, the user will clearly not be content with limited settings that narrow the overall functionality of this solution. For maximum flexible settings and getting the most out of the TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND model, it has a fairly flexible and optional WEB interface for configuration and management. Although it has many settings, understanding them is not as difficult as it seems at first glance. It is quite friendly and has fairly detailed help for each customizable option.

In the “QSS” menu you can quickly configure the Quick Security Setup wireless network. After enabling the QSS option, the connection mechanism for wireless network clients is activated, and channel encryption is set using an automatically generated password.

Here you can set the method of obtaining an IP address on an external network dynamically using an external DHCP server or set it manually, and also select the method of connecting via an encrypted channel with a communication provider via standards: PPPoE, L2TP, PPTP, BigPondCable, specify the MTU size of packets, etc. .d.

Then the “Network” menu allows you to manually set the IP address of the LAN port and comprehensively configure the parameters of the connection to the provider via the WAN interface.

It is possible to clone the MAC address or specify it manually if your provider distributes permissions only based on the client’s MAC identification.

In the Wireless menu item, select the Wi-Fi access point standard and set the name of the wireless connection that will appear when clients connect. You can select the point line channel number and disable/enable the wireless segment. It is possible to disable the broadcast SSID (network name and login parameters).

Here, in manual mode, you can: select the authorization method when connecting, and also, based on the selected authorization method, you can set the radio channel encryption algorithm, disable safe mode data transmission over the wireless segment. Supported encryption and authentication standards are listed in the specifications table above.

You can enable and select one of two MAC address filtering modes for connecting wireless clients and edit the MAC address list.

Possibility of customization additional extensions specifications: selection of packet size, inclusion of WMM technology (transmission priority streaming video) etc.

There are also statistics on the operation of the wireless network segment, which notifies you about the clients connected to the access point and their activity.

The DHCP server is configured in the “DHCP Settings” menu. It will provide the user with the distribution of IP addresses for WLAN clients and LAN segments. It is possible to disable this service.

Here you can set the range of issued addresses, taking into account the time during which these IP addresses will be reserved for the client who received it (based on its MAC address).

There is a table of reserved IPs and clients who took advantage of dynamic issuance. It is possible to configure static DHCP.

When connecting an external drive via the router's USB 2.0 connector, its resources can be distributed via SAMBA or FTP protocols. Here you can specify the rights for users included in the list to have access (read, write) to certain open folders.

In Virtual Servers you can set the IP of local machines to which certain ports from external connection. This function will make it possible to implement any servers on local network machines that will be open on designated ports for external traffic and connections.

Port Triggering will allow you to redefine or replace packet direction ports.

It is possible to set the IP of a local station in the DMZ item, which will receive all packets arriving on any port of the router. This means that for an external client, it will be the one that will have an IP address assigned to the WAN interface and will fully respond to all its requests.

UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) settings page. This is a peer-to-peer architecture personal computers and smart devices installed, for example, at home, which provides automatic connection similar devices to each other and their joint operation in a network environment, as a result of which the network becomes accessible more of people.

There is a fairly functional firewall. It allows you to block the passage of packets based on a number of criteria, limiting the output of encrypted traffic or specialized packets.

There is a page with blocking settings based on various types of attacks.

It is also possible to restrict access by MAC addresses.

Here the developers have placed access settings intended for control from an external network.

The developers have equipped the flagship of the line of wireless routers, the TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND model, with fairly flexible and universal means of monitoring passing traffic.

It is possible to block access to specified Internet domains, linked to the MAC of any PC from the internal network. You can block access to certain routes and directions, as well as hosts, from certain IP addresses of the local network to the external network, indicating a range of ports and time rules. It is possible to filter traffic based on the type of protocol or service.

There is also the ability to set static routes.

The table of used routes is provided on a separate tab.

Another feature of this model is the ability to set the speed of the external channel.

Access speed restrictions can be imposed on each client of the local network, indicating the protocol and range of addresses and ports. A very interesting and popular feature. This feature is rare even with much more expensive solutions.

An interesting feature that may be useful is the ability to pin or bind an IP address to a MAC address and a DNS name to an IP.

You can select a pre-installed DDNS dynamic domain name distribution server from the list and specify the connection settings for it.

The TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND model can confidently be called the flagship of the line of wireless solutions from TP-LINK. Here, along with high and varied hardware capabilities, there are also quite thoughtful and diverse software services. You can note: excellent functionality in options for connecting to the provider’s network and filtering unwanted traffic, the ability to assign or bind an IP address to a MAC address and a DNS name to an IP in manual mode. The function of separating and limiting traffic by speed can be called quite unique and very popular for a small office router or home network. The ability to create a network file server based on TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND can be placed in a separate class, since only the most expensive solutions in this market segment have such functionality. In other aspects of the WEB interface, this model is not inferior to any of the representatives of the line of wireless solutions from TP-LINK. Simple and semi-automatic configuration functions should be a useful feature. In total, the TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND model turned out to be more than fully functional, both for positioning of this device within a home or office Wi-Fi router network.

Testing

When testing, we will try first of all to pay attention to the operation of this Wi-Fi router in ideal conditions operation of a wireless network, at a distance of no more than two meters between points. The total throughput of its NAT interface will also be numerically determined. For visual comparison The test subject's throughput will be measured between his two LAN ports.

Let us draw our reader's attention to the incomplete adequacy and repeatability of the test results of the wireless network segment. Such communication channels use 802.11 wireless standards, and all radio channels are very sensitive to radio interference from almost any consumer or digital equipment. Therefore, it is worth taking into account the operation of mobile devices, microwave ovens and other electrical appliances that create radio interference.

Model TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND will be tested in our laboratory in conjunction with network Wi-Fi Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN card and Gigabit Ethernet Intel 82566MC.

Comparative testing of performance at a connection speed of 300 Mbit/s with line of sight at a distance of two meters using WPA2 encryption.

In both directions.

Data flow from the access point to the client.

Client data flow to the access point.

Comparative testing of the speed of packets passing through the LAN interface for another LAN client in both directions.

In both directions.

Data flow in one direction.

Comparative testing of the speed of packets passing through the NAT service of this router in both directions.

Based on the test results, we can talk about the average speed capabilities of the TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND solution. In the most better conditions the average data transfer speed over a wireless connection was just over 75 Mbps, which is not the best indicator for the IEEE 802.11n standard. However, such bandwidth is quite in demand in modern networks. Let us note one interesting feature: when packets passed through the router’s NAT service, the speed did not exceed 126 Mbit/s, while through the LAN it was 440 Mbit/s. Such a decrease indicates a serious load on the router at high speeds. But even such speed indicators are very good, and the speed of the TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND is more than enough for any modern tasks of a small office or home network.

When testing the access speed to a drive connected to the USB port of this router, the download speed of files from TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND ranged from 5.5 MB/s to 6.0 MB/s, and recording to a network file server was performed with speeds from 1.60 MB/s to 1.75 MB/s. Such speeds are quite justified for small home file server, but when several PCs access it in a small office, such performance may not be enough.

conclusions

The TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND router model is a worthy representative of functional and fairly productive solutions. It ensures network operation on the most advanced data transfer standards, such as Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11n specifications. These features provide high potential and fully justify its relatively increased price. Along with sufficient functionality and high access speed, this model has a high-quality structure of help links in the built-in WEB interface. The design of the case itself is quite conservative and thoughtful, and together with its compact size and stylish design it leaves only the best impressions. Setting up the TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND model is quite simple and has an easy algorithm. The WEB interface itself has a good selection of capabilities using in various ways processing of passing traffic, including limiting its speed. It is also worth mentioning the ability to connect USB drives to this model, which will ensure it operates in file server mode, or as a printer, which will become common to all network users.

We express our gratitude to the companyLLC PF Service (Dnepropetrovsk) for the equipment provided for testing.

Choose a decent router by affordable price It’s quite difficult in the Russian computer market, because over the past few years the range of network equipment has increased several times. Every now and then many new products appear, which are promoted by many well-known manufacturers. Manufacturer TP-Link also did not stand aside and offered its vision of a decent and small office - model TL-WR1043ND. In this article, the reader will get acquainted with the new product, and review, testing and feedback from the owners will help him decide on a purchase.

The right approach to the buyer

Many potential buyers first of all want to understand why the TP-Link TL-WR1043ND router has received such attention, because there are many cheaper devices of a similar class on the market. It's very simple: after conducting marketing research, the manufacturer identified several important factors that most owners focus on. The ideal device was developed to meet these requirements:

  • the ability to choose the firmware for yourself and the ease of installing it into the router;
  • the presence of removable amplification antennas (many buyers are more interested in their presence than functionality);
  • use of gigabit ports to organize a wired network;
  • the presence of a USB port (although many buyers could not explain what it was for);
  • flexible setup menu with Russian language support and detailed descriptions.

First meeting

A familiar cardboard box in light green tones contains on the front side not only an image of the router itself WiFi TP-Link TL-WR1043ND, and a complete description of all its functions. Moreover, as you might guess, the most current requirements for a buyer’s router have a more detailed description and are highlighted in bold. The device is not secured in any way inside the box, so during purchase you should print out the packaging and make sure that the router was not damaged during transportation.

The standard equipment, inherent in all modifications of the manufacturer, looks practical, but very poor: the router itself, a power supply, three removable antennas, a half-meter patch cord, disks with drivers and advertising brochures. Once again saving on paper, the manufacturer invites all users to use the official website for downloading detailed instructions manual. Judging by the numerous reviews from owners, it would be nice to see a small branded sticker with the company logo included in the package, in order to somehow decorate the gloomy appearance of the network device case.

Appearance and build quality

For the first time in many years, the TP-Link router has changed in appearance, namely, the panel with indicators has become much more informative, and it can be seen quite well from a great distance. The button for quickly connecting to a Wi-Fi network is located on the front panel and is highlighted with a green sticker; this solution will no longer allow beginners to press reset to factory settings instead of establishing a connection. All indicators on the panel are labeled, which is very convenient when working with the router.

There are no complaints about the build quality: the body is made of high-strength plastic. The coating is glossy, but does not collect dust or fingerprints. Special thanks to the manufacturer TP-Link TL-WR1043ND from the happy owners regarding the connectors for mounting antennas - the copper base not only transmits the signal better, but also does not allow the thread to be twisted during installation by inept actions.

Interfaces, connectors and motherboard

The nice appearance of the TP-Link TL-WR1043ND router is not only due to the design of the case. The manufacturer has taken a big step towards future owners and made all the connectors in the device quite informative. The interface for connecting the power supply is labeled and has a black contact pad (it is impossible to confuse it with the Reset button). USB port According to the 2.0 standard, it has a white marking (for USB 3.0 it is blue). Network interface for Internet connection it is signed (WAN) and has a blue color. The manufacturer made it separately for 4 ports and painted it in yellow. All ports are numbered, which is very convenient when resetting ports or setting up IPTV.

All chips in the TL-WR1043ND router, including the base board and processor, are built on the Atheros chip - this is a good sign for all device owners, because this manufacturer is a world leader in the quality of network equipment. All microcircuits in the device body are securely soldered to system board. When transporting the router, nothing knocks or makes any extraneous sounds.

Decent functionality of the TL-WR1043ND router

Since the TL-WR1043ND device is not positioned in the budget class (price 4,000 rubles), potential buyers have quite high requirements for its functionality. Here the manufacturer TP-Link tried and supplied its router with all existing technologies in the network equipment market.

  1. A WAN connection can be made to any provider in the world (naturally, it can handle a complex Beeline connection).
  2. The router and access point mode has its own settings, which is very convenient when organizing wireless networks in the office (client list, reserving a range of service addresses, and similar functions for system administrators).
  3. not only at the UPnP level. There is a demilitarized zone, a virtual server and other traffic redirection functions.
  4. Support for virtual private networks is provided at the hardware level (PPTP, L2TP, IPSec with ESP headers).
  5. The built-in firewall in the TL-WR1043ND router at the hardware level is capable of protecting the entire local network created by the router: access control, filtering (by IP, MAC or domain), SPI and even DoS.

Need for firmware

Initially, the device comes with basic firmware, which has a minimum of settings and no description of functions. However, the manufacturer strongly recommends going to the official website and downloading the software for the TL-WR1043ND router model. The firmware is selected by the user individually according to his needs. Many administrators recommend downloading full version for Russian-speaking users. Yes, it has a lot of functions unnecessary for beginners, but at least there is a detailed description of each item, which is very convenient for fine-tuning.

Do not forget that many providers on their websites offer ready-made firmware that is designed to connect to their servers. This solution will greatly facilitate work in service provider networks. The router supports not only firmware updates, but also hardware uploading of software via a USB-COM interface cable (you will need the PuTTY program and knowledge of administration).

Simplicity and ease of setup

For the TL-WR1043ND router, setting up connections is possible in two ways: using the connection wizard and fine-tuning using the control panel. To access the router interface, use the web interface (the address, login and password are written on the router sticker located on the bottom of the device case). When logging in for the first time, the user is recommended to change the password for the administrator account. After which the setup wizard appears, prompting you to set a name wireless interface, select an encryption standard and set a Wi-Fi password.

If the owner prefers to fine-tune the router, then the services of the wizard must be abandoned and go to the “Wireless” menu. A detailed description of the functionality, which can be seen on the right side of the interface, will help you quickly understand the settings. If you wish, you can download the complete user manual from the manufacturer’s official website, it contains ready-made examples with a detailed description of all the settings of the TL-WR1043ND, which will greatly facilitate the task for all device owners.

Solving problems when setting up a router

Some software modifications proposed by the manufacturer on the official website do not correctly support the operation of the print server in the TL-WR1043ND router. Reviews from owners in the media recommend a universal solution:

  • connect the printer locally to your computer or laptop and install drivers;
  • connect the printer to a wireless access point;
  • set the binding of the IP address to the connected printer;
  • connect the printer to your PC or laptop as a network device.

This solution allows you to ensure 100% printer operation even after rebooting the router. However, printing from phones, tablets and other wireless devices will still be limited.

Many owners claim that the TP-Link router often freezes when transmitting large amounts of information wirelessly. No device is immune from overheating, so it is recommended to place the router in a well-ventilated area, away from heating devices.

Finally

As the review shows, wireless device The TL-WR1043ND, whose price does not exceed 4,000 rubles on the Russian market, is a rather interesting solution for all buyers. Huge functionality, ease of setup and wonderful appearance can attract the attention of many users. Judging by the reviews of the owners, there are shortcomings in the router, but they are not particularly critical. There is only one conclusion: this is one of the best routers, which, in terms of price-quality ratio, can be recommended to all potential buyers.
