Conclusions of the article

By using free program ImgBurn will allow you to burn an image to a disk, create a disk image, save a disk image on a computer, write files and folders to a disk, erase a disk, and check the disk for errors.

Sometimes you need to format a flash drive or memory card; of course you need to save all the files stored there. In this case regular user with the help of the duty officer file manager copies all the files to the computer’s hard drive, and then only perform the reverse procedure. Although this can all be done much easier using a free utility that can create images of flash drives in img file s and record back in a few mouse clicks.

There is no need to install the utility in the classical sense of the word. Just unpack the downloaded archive, the main thing is not to forget the name of the folder where you placed all the files. To start the program you need to click on the only executable file, it is called Win32DiskImager.exe. To remove Win32 Disk Imager you don’t have to run anything, just erase the folder with all the contents into which the program was unpacked.

Win32 Disk Imager, a program with very interesting, and most importantly, useful features, which does not have worthy alternative. With its help you can do, exact copies USB flash drives and memory cards, into img files, and also write the same images back to removable media information. In fact, users do not have to copy information to the hard drive one file at a time, but get a whole image at once. You can also use this program to record ready-made assemblies img files, including images of boot disks.

The program interface can be called the embodiment of minimalism, only the necessary buttons and lines, nothing more superfluous. In the line signed Image File, select the img file with which we will work, depending on what we are going to do, we will use it for writing or reading. The drop-down list labeled Divice allows you to select which flash drive or memory card the program will work with if you have several connected to your computer at the same time. The “Read” button starts saving information into an img file, and “Write”, on the contrary, writes images to a flash drive. The only thing that will entertain users while reading/writing is the progress bar.

Now about some features of the program. Under no circumstances should the names of folders or files (not those stored on a flash drive) contain Russian letters, otherwise a window will pop up warning of an error. Also, do not try to burn something onto CD/DVD discs and be sure to format the flash drive before recording, so as not to deal with all sorts of errors signed with incomprehensible codes later.

Win32 Disk Imager has no settings at all, you don’t even have to look for it, and help is provided in the form of pop-up tips.

The program works great on 32 and 64 bit operating systems. The interface is in English, although you don’t need to understand anything special; all the inscriptions should be familiar from other applications, or, in the worst case, you can translate it once.

Many novice computer users do not know about this convenient format storing information as a disk image. Meanwhile, the ability to create, use and burn disk images can greatly simplify the lives of movie lovers and gamers.

Disk image (image) - computer file containing a complete copy of the contents and structure of a file system and data located on a disk - such as a CD, floppy disk, or partition hard drive. The term describes any such file, and it does not matter whether the image was obtained from a real physical disk or not.

Thus, the disk image contains all the information necessary to duplicate the structure, location and content of the data of any information storage device. Typically, a disk image simply repeats the set of sectors of the media, ignoring file system built on it.

Initially, disk images were used for Reserve copy and copying disks where exact preservation of the original structure was necessary and/or appropriate. With the advent optical media(CD, DVD) images of a CD/DVD disc have become a more common type of image, often in the form of an ISO file containing a file ISO system 9660, usually used on such drives. ISO format has become the most commonly used format for disc images, but it does not support multi-session data and audio CDs.

In addition to .ISO, there are a number of other disk image formats such as .IMG and .DMG, as well as proprietary ones: .NRG ( Nero Burning ROM), .MDS/.MDF (Alcohol 120%), .DAA (PowerISO), .PQI (DriveImage) and .CCD/.IMG/.SUB (CloneCD).

And now it’s clear...

xxxxx.iso
This is what a file created by one of the most common programs, UltraIso, looks like on a computer

This is what the image looks like created by Alcohol 120% NB!!! There are always two of them!!! MDS and MDF. They are always together! Therefore, in your folder you will have
xxxxx.MDS
xxxxx.MDF

xxxxx.nrg
Well, this is what the image looks like created by the program Nero.

I would like to draw your attention to the fact that this is what your files will look like if you have installed programs for working with images. Most often they look like unidentified files

(but with visible extension) or Winrar archives!!! And that's why. When you installed Winrar, there was such a window at the end

where by default ISO file Winrar opens

So what can you do with the image?

1. Paste into virtual drive(emulator)
2. Burn to disk

We will only consider writing the image to disk.

Alcohol 120%

If your system has two drives, then you can copy the disk. To do this, insert the source disc into one CD-ROM, and into the second blank disk. Select "Copy discs". If you do not want the image of the source disk to be copied to your hard drive, then check the box "Copying current disk on the fly".

If you have one CD-ROM in your system, then this function will not be available on your computer. HDD A temporary image of the original disk will be copied.

Nero

To burn a disk image to a regular CD, you can use Nero Burning Rom, or you can use Nero Express for these purposes. The mechanism for burning such a disc in Nero Express is very clear. After starting the program, the main dialog box appears:

We will not answer the question of which recorder to use; we will select the desired drive later. If your computer is only equipped CD-RW drive, That this menu will not appear.

Click on in the right way mouse and click the open button, a dialog box for recording an image will appear:

Let's look at the settings:

Image file - this field is not active, it shows the name of the selected virtual disk and the path to it. Right there, next to it, there is a “View” button. The name of the button is not entirely successful, it serves to replace the selected image. It works as follows: click on the button and a dialog box appears, in it we find the virtual CD we need and select it with one click of the mouse. By clicking “add” will thereby replace the virtual disk.

Receiver drive – if you have several of them, then select one of them.

Write speed – select the write speed to the disk. It automatically adjusts from maximum speed supported by a blank CD (burn at minimum speed).

Number of copies – if there is a need to create several identical disks, then set required quantity and after burning the first disc, simply change the disc in the receiving tray to a clean one, and so on as many times as there were specified copies.

It’s no longer a secret that a flash drive can be used as “ laptop computer". Or use the USB container with different Windows distributions. But what if at one point you need to delete all the information, download something new, or use it for completely different purposes. It's a pity to lose valuable files. Moreover, if you follow the second link, you will immediately understand how difficult it is to master the process of creating a bootable flash drive with Windows XP/Vista/7/8/8.1, to bring it to life, and if forced to format, all the work will be in vain.

And here we remember about a completely unique utility with which you can create bootable flash drives, and make images into img files and write these images back to the USB drive.

How will it look like. Let's say you have operating system, loading from removable media, with which you have been fiddling all day. You urgently need to use a flash drive for other purposes, but it’s a pity to say goodbye to your files. On local disk create a folder, for example “A copy of the USB” (any name, but without Russian letters). Turn on Win32 Disk Imager. Click on the blue folder and find the newly created folder in Explorer, in our case it is A copy of the USB. Without leaving Explorer, enter the file name, for example “usb flash drive"(any). In the Device list we point to our flash drive. Click the “Read” button.

  • The “Read” button starts saving information into an img file.
  • The “Write” button, on the contrary, writes images to a flash drive.

As you can see, a minimum of buttons and the absence of any settings makes this utility accessible to any user. The most important thing here is to remember which button is responsible for saving information - "Read" , and what kind of recording of this information back to the flash drive - "Write"

Saving information to an img file took me 15 minutes. After which he gave the flash drive to a friend after removing it from it. He exploited the “hard worker” for two days and returned it formatted in the same way. Then I turned on the Win32 Disk Imager utility again. Clicked on the blue folder and selected the img file (in order for the file to be visible, select “all files” as in the picture).

Specified the media (flash drive) on which the recording will be made and pressed the “Write” button. The recording process lasted 4 times longer, but at the end of it I again have portable Windows on a flash drive with all its settings.

In exactly the same way, using this utility you can make a flash drive bootable. Turn on Win32 Disk Imager - click blue folder- select the ISO image of the system - select the recording medium - press the “Write” button - wait for the process to complete - reboot and install a new operating system.

The utility is useful in all respects. But remember that the author of the article is not responsible for the use and possible problems with any software described on the site. Be careful and do not copy folders with Russian names from the flash drive. The utility will refuse to help you, citing that it is busy :)
