File extension img than open. How to create a disk image and how to open it in the free Daemon Tools Lite program

Today, many users are faced with new file formats that they have never been able to work with before. It is completely normal that a completely expected question arises: which program should I use to open the file? In this article we will take a closer look at IMG format files.

Before we can understand which program can open an IMG file, we need to understand what this file is, as well as what information it may contain.

What is an IMG file?

You probably know about disk image files. Such files contain accurate information taken from a physical disk, allowing, for example, to either burn an image onto a new disc or run it on a computer without a physical drive (you only need a program that allows you to emulate a virtual CD drive).

The IMG file is an image of a disk, be it hard or optical. Not the most popular image format, like ISO, for example, but you can still see it from time to time.

How to open an IMG file?

From the above we can conclude that an IMG file can be opened using almost any program that allows you to create a virtual drive, i.e. you will need to reproduce the disk image on your computer.

From this article you will learn about what they are for and how to open files with the extensions " .iso», « .img», « .mdx», « .mds/.mdf», « .nrg», « .vcd"and other disk images? How to create a disk image?

File with extension " .iso" - this is the most popular disk image format, perhaps, which has already become a standard. File with extension " .img" is the program disk image format CloneCD, which is used to copy physical CDs. Other programs also have their own formats for creating disk images:

  • ".mds/.mdf" for programs Alcohol 120% And Daemon Tools,
  • ".nrg" for the program Nero Burning Rom,
  • ".vcd" for the program VirtualCD.

Below we’ll talk about what disk images are needed for and how you can work with them using a free program Daemon Tools Lite.

1. What is a disk image

The disc image contains the same data, in the same organization, as the original CD or DVD. Using disk images, operating system distributions, computer games, software collections, as well as any other content, in particular multimedia, which was originally intended for distribution on CDs or DVDs, are distributed on the Internet.

Some games and programs, even after installation on the computer, start only if there is a disc in the drive. This is a way to protect against pirated distribution. In other words, a disk image is a virtual copy of a physical disk. Just as a computer drive reads CDs or DVDs, disk image files are read by a virtual drive. This appears in the computer thanks to programs that can emulate a physical drive. How to create a disk image, how to open it and view everything that is stored on it - we will discuss these issues below.

2. Briefly about Daemon Tools Lite

There are several programs for emulating a physical drive on the software market - for example, Alcohol 120%, Virtual CD, Ultra ISO. One of the most popular - Daemon Tools, and not least thanks to the availability of a free version Lite. Paid version Daemon Tools Pro offers a little more features than the free one, in particular, it is the ability to emulate up to 32 virtual drives. Whereas in the free version of Daemon Tools Lite, only 4 virtual drives are available. However, for home use the features of the free Lite version will be sufficient. Daemon Tools Lite supports most disk image formats, can open them, and also create your own images from the contents of CDs and DVDs in physical drives.

It is with the help of the Daemon Tools Lite program that we will understand the intricacies of the question of how to create a disk image from a regular CD or DVD disk in a computer drive. But first, let's look at how to open a disk image using Daemon Tools Lite.

Having downloaded the program from the developer’s website, we can begin installing it. The installation of Daemon Tools Lite cannot be called standard, and one click of the “Next” button is not enough. There are pitfalls, and they are connected with the developer’s zealous desire to attract users to paid versions of the program. Let's take a closer look at the installation process.

3. Install Daemon Tools Lite

Launch the Daemon Tools Lite installer and in the first window of the installation wizard click “ Further».

In the second window, the option we need, which allows us to use the program for free, is visible at the very bottom. Let's select it.

In the third window, if desired, we can remove the option to send anonymous statistics; it is better to leave all other checkboxes. Click " Further».

In the next window, click “ Install».

Also " Install» select when asked to trust the software of the developer Daemon Tools Lite.

But in the installation completion window, you need to be careful not to install unnecessary programs and add-ons into the system. Click " Ready».

4. How to open a disk image

The Daemon Tools Lite program window will launch, and we can already open the disk image. Click the add image button at the bottom of the program window.

In the Explorer window, select the disk image stored on the computer (in our case, this is the standard “.iso” format) and open it.

The disk image will be added to the Daemon Tools Lite program window. Click on the added disk image, then call up the context menu and select “ Mount».

That’s it – the disk image is mounted. By analogy with a physical drive, this is the same as an inserted CD or DVD disk, respectively, into the physical drive of a computer. All mounted virtual drives will be visible at the bottom of the program window.

Now we can open Windows Explorer. We will see that two drives have appeared in the system (naturally, if the PC or laptop is equipped with the first, physical one). Since the disk image was mounted into a virtual drive, the latter is visible as an icon from the contents of the disk image. Launch the disk image with a regular double click.

And we can now work directly with the contents of the disk image.

There is an easier way to open disk images. Daemon Tools Lite can initially be selected as the default program for opening disk image files, for example, as in our case in the “.iso” format. In this case, when you double-click on the “.iso” file from Explorer, Daemon Tools Lite will launch automatically and also automatically mount the selected file.

But to unmount a virtual drive, which means, by analogy with a physical drive, to remove a CD or DVD from the last one, you only need to do so in the Daemon Tools Lite program window. Without unmounting the virtual drive, the disk image file cannot be deleted if it is no longer needed. Select the disk image at the bottom of the Daemon Tools Lite window, call up the context menu and select the command “ Unmount».

That’s it – now you can get rid of the disk image file, nothing will interfere with this process.

5. How to create a disk image

Have you temporarily come across a disk with the distribution kit of your favorite Linux build? Are we dealing with a laptop without a drive at all, in the delivery package of which our friends from China carefully included a CD with drivers? All this is nothing if there is another computer with a drive in the house or if true friends come to the rescue. A physical CD or DVD can be turned into a disk image, stored on a computer and opened in a virtual, essentially non-existent drive. How to create a disk image using Daemon Tools Lite? The free version of the program allows you not only to open disk image files, but also can create them from physical disks located, respectively, in the physical drive of the computer. Insert the desired CD or DVD into the drive and at the bottom of the program window click the " Create a disk image».

A small window will appear to specify the parameters for creating a disk image. In the column for setting the disk reading speed, we can change the preset speed to a lower value if the image will be created, for example, from an old or damaged CD or DVD.

Column " Output image file" - this is the purpose of the folder where the disk image will be placed after the program is completed, as well as giving the image a name and format. Daemon Tools Lite can create disk images in “.mdx”, “.mds” and standard “.iso” formats. If there is no specific need to work specifically with the “.mdx” and “.mds” formats, it is naturally better to choose the popular “.iso” format. In the future, this format can be opened by most programs and written to a physical disk.

To save disk space, you can select the " Compress image data“, however, it is better to abandon it if we are talking about creating a disk image of the operating system distribution or native laptop drivers.

After setting all the parameters, click “ Start».

The disk image creation process will begin. We obediently wait for the process to complete, after which we can close the window.

That’s it – we can search for the created disk image in the folder that was specified in the parameters.

A computer's CD or DVD drive is sometimes a vulnerable and capricious thing, so if Daemon Tools Lite slows down when detecting it, press the drive update button.

What program to open img file you can choose from the list below!

Extension .img What is the file format?

IMG files are used to backup data. Those who work with disk images are familiar with IMG files. In such an extension, you can save information that will be not only identical to that located on the removable media, but also to the structure of the source disk itself.

What you need to know about IMG files?

IMG files were created thanks to the development team at Apple. They were standard for all versions of the OS until Mac OS 9. Of course, Mac OS X is also adapted to read disk images with this extension. Nowadays the DMG format is more popular. It became an improved version of its predecessor IMG. IMG files are available to be stored on your hard drive to save space.

Note that the computer understands the image as, for example, a DVD, CD or hard drive, in other words, as a separate disk drive. It is important to note that files with the IMG extension are a complete copy of the removable media. This way, you won't need to store a significant amount of physical media. You can transfer an image from one media to another. Thus, you will get a disk identical to the source.

They are distinguished by their compatibility with a solid number of programs. If the software you have is not on this list, then you can simply change the extension from .img to .iso. In this case, the image file will be compatible with a large number of programs.

You can find a list of programs on our website.

Now you know how to open img and what programs to use for this!
