About a year ago I encountered the problem that I could not restore a Sony PC Companion backup to my phone. At that moment, I was really confused because I didn’t find a single free solution to restore my phone book. After some research, I found out exactly how the data is archived and made a small program that unpacks the necessary files easily and simply. With this solution, you can extract data from a Sony PC Companion backup absolutely free of charge and on any platform.

I myself have only used the program to restore contacts, and the article describes restoring the phone book, but in theory, you can restore any data if you know in which specific directory it is located. This program will not work if you have encrypted your phone. If you want to recover your SMS, use this lesson. If you have any difficulties, I can answer your questions by mail.

Recovering data in 12 simple steps

To work you need to install Java (RE)! Time: 10 minutes

This program works on Windows, Mac and Linux. With this 12-point description, you can restore your phone book, as well as other files.

Open the folder with the saved backup. By default, the backup is saved in C:\Users\ Username\Documents\Sony\Sony PC Companion\Phone Backups
Find files with the extension “.dbk”. We copy these files (ctrl+c, ctrl+v) in case “something goes wrong”.
dbk files usually open as a zip archive, so you can simply rename the file. If you see the .dbk extension in the file name, you can skip this step. If not, you need to configure the display. In Windows 10, in an open window in the top panel, switch to the "View" - "Options" tab, "View" tab and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"(see screenshot). If you have a different version of Windows, type "windows" in the search engine YourVersion show file extensions".
Rename the copy of your file to backup.zip (F2)
Open the file (double click). If you don't have a program to open zip archives, I highly recommend 7zip.
Now you need to find the contacts file. These may be different folders in different versions of Android and phone models. Here is a list of possible options:

If none of these directories exist or the data in them is incorrect, look in the other Applications\com.sonyericsson subfolders. If you have discovered a new catalogue, please write in a comment or send it to me by email.
There should be a file in the folder called fullbackupdata. Copy this file to your Desktop (just drag and drop).
Now, download my program from the file in the attachment.
Unzip ”restoreData.jar” and place it on your Desktop as well.
Almost there! Now double-click to launch “restoreData.jar”. After a few seconds the file “ restore.tar" If this does not happen, make sure that you have java installed and both files are in the same directory (for example, on the Desktop).
Open this file with 7zip or similar program.
Now you need to find a folder named “f”. This folder should contain the file “ full_backup_vcard.vcf“. This is exactly what you were looking for. This file can be used to download contacts back to your phone or import into windows contacts. If you don't find the file, go back to step 6 and try searching in another folder.
