Connecting two wifi routers. Setting up a wireless connection. A short video tutorial on setting up a bridge

If you want to increase your productivity home network, then you should seriously think about buying two routers. By combining two routers one at a time local network- you will provide an increased range of the Wi-Fi network, which is great for both home and office premises. There are two methods for connecting routers over a network.

1. Connect wireless Wi-Fi routers to a local network

Step 1

The first step is to determine whether your routers are compatible for bridging. You can look this up both in the router documentation and on the Internet. If you discover that your router does not support bridge modes (“bridge”/”repeater”), you can always download DD-WRT program, it will help you introduce this function if you are installing two routers, connecting them into one network.

Step 2

Install the routers nearby, this will make it much easier to perform further manipulations with the connection. Upon completion of the merger, the equipment can be returned to its place.

Step 3

Choose the main router from the two, the main thing is that it has stronger antennas, which will help you easily install a second router. After connecting the main router to the modem, connect it to one, shared local network of your PC, we carry out the manipulations as with a simple installation of a wireless network. Don't forget about the IP address, DHCP range, don't forget about the mask.

Step 4

Connect the second router to your PC or laptop using Ethernet cable, but for this you do not need to connect the router to the modem. After that, open the router settings window on your computer. Find the Wireless and Internet tabs.

Step 5

If the router can support a bridge connection, then open the Network Mode (Wireless Mode/Connection Type) configuration and select Bridge Mode (Repeater Mode/Repeater Bridge)

Step 6

Check that the mask of the secondary router is identical to the main one. Set the IP range. (For example, the main router is 186.567.1.1 then the secondary router will be 186.567.1.5)

Step 7

Name two connections to Wi-Fi various names so that you know which one is the main one, but the connection type passwords must match.

Step 8

At the final stage, it is worth installing the secondary router in place, but the distance between it and the main one should not exceed more than half the range of the main one.

2. Connecting routers on the same Wi-Fi network

Step 1

As in the previous method, choose a stronger Wi-Fi router, usually choose new router with higher configurations. If you have two identical routers, then it doesn’t matter which one you set as the main one.

Step 2

Select an adjacent (secondary) router; it has the function of distributing the Internet when creating a LAN-to-WAN.

Step 3

Place both routers close to your laptop or computer, this will make it more convenient when setting up your wireless network. After the process, you will return the routers to their original places in the room.

Step 4

After completing all the steps before, select the connection. There are two types of connection:

  • LAN-to-LAN (local area network) - allows you to increase the size of the network coverage range, and the connection large quantity devices.
  • LAN-to-WAN is a global computer network that allows you to set restrictions on certain types of devices. You will be able to specify the sites that can be visited and which are not accessible.

Step 5

The main Wi-Fi router is connected to the modem, and then connect the router via an Ethernet cable to the computer. Then the installation proceeds using the same method as if you were connecting one router.

Step 6

To connect a secondary router, open the configuration window:

  • If you are creating a local network (LAN-to-LAN), then you should enter the IP address so that it matches the address of the main router, and the last digit is one more.
  • When creating a global computer network (LAN-to-WAN), the process is the same, only the penultimate digit needs to be changed, one unit more.

Step 7

Designate DHCP server on the secondary router. To connect a local network, you should disable it completely, but if you install global network, then the address should range from 2 to 50 on the last digits.

How to connect a router to a router via wifi? This question is often asked by users who want to expand the coverage area of their router.

Thanks to the use of two combined devices, you can significantly improve the quality of your Internet connection and increase your Wi-Fi coverage area by almost two to three times.

You can expand your router's coverage area by boosting the antenna. You can also not amplify, but buy separately and install more powerful antenna.

This method is less expensive because you don’t need to buy another new router.

However, if the antenna improvement method does not bring any results, you can try setting up an access point on two routers at the same time.

First you need to determine approximate diagram mutual connection of two devices.

Schematic example of connecting two routers

If you want to connect a router to transmit a signal over longer distances, you should familiarize yourself with basic circuit connecting these two devices.

It can be used to connect a network in an apartment and in any other private sector.

An example diagram looks like this:

According to this diagram, there are only two ways to interconnect two routers: through a wire and demon wired method connections. Let's take a closer look at them.

Connecting two routers using a wire

The easiest way to connect two routers to one access point is the wired method. To work, you will need the most common UTP cable, another name for it is twisted pair.

You can purchase it at any telecommunications store.

The average market price of this type of cable is 20-30 rubles per meter. Appearance The twisted pair internet cable is shown in the figure below:

To connect two routers using twisted pair, follow the instructions:

  • Make sure both sides of the cable have adapters. Also make sure that the cable size matches the distance from one router to another;
  • Take two routers;
  • Connect them using a cable. Connect twisted pair To LAN port the router that is configured to connect to the Internet. Connect the other end of the cable to the WAN connector of the unconfigured router. Another router will transmit the signal to long distance;
  • Now just configure the router connected to the Internet in the standard way, and assign a dynamic IP to the other router.

Advice! The disadvantage of this connection method is that in some cases it is inconvenient to lay the cable on long distances(when you want to create coverage between several floors, for example).

Also, the cable may become susceptible to mechanical breakdowns, which cannot be corrected and then you will have to buy new cable.

Wireless connection between two routers

This type connection does not require any wires. However, the complexity of this method lies in the fact that it is very important to configure the equipment correctly:

  • Take a router to which the Internet will be connected;
  • The second router will be the access point;
  • Set up your first router in a standard way as if you were using only one router;
  • Now connect your computer to another router;
  • Using the control panel, open the wireless network settings window, in which select the Internet protocol selection window.
    Select the second router and configure the IPv protocol for it. Then click on the properties tab and enter the following text (without quotes) in the next address usage field - “192.168.1.254”;
  • Save your settings and open your browser. In the address bar, enter "192.168.1.254". The settings menu for the second router will open;

  • Click on the “search” button;
  • A window will open with a list of available wireless networks. Select the network of the first router and press the save key;

  • Reboot both access points.

If the router's power is not enough for stable network coverage Wi-Fi apartments, home or office, there is a need for additional devices. There are three ways to enhance weak signal main router: install additional antenna, repeater or another router. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages; let’s take a closer look at the third option.

How to set up a router

To configure the router, connect a computer or other device with a web browser installed to it:

  • You can connect your computer with a cable by connecting network card PC with a free LAN port of the router;
  • You can connect to the router via a wireless Wi-Fi network using a laptop, tablet or smartphone.

By default, the wireless network is assigned a name (SSID) identical to the name of the router model, and access to the distributed Wi-Fi network is not protected by a password.

After establishing a connection with the router, open it on your computer or connected wireless device web browser and address bar enter the router's IP address. For example, for a router TP-LINK address will be as follows: http://192.168.0.1

Illustrations taken from Settings TP-LINK router TL-WR 1045, other manufacturers' control panel looks different, but general principles, abbreviations and terms will be the same.

Entering the router's IP address in the browser's address bar will open access to the control panel

The correct IP address, login and password required to log into the control panel are indicated on the plate attached to the bottom of the router.

The IP address, login and password of the control panel are indicated on the nameplate on the bottom of the router

The login and password indicated on the sign apply only to the control panel, but not to the wireless network distributed by the router. After entering your login and password, you will see main screen, which displays information about the device status and provides access to menu items for setting modes.

Do not change the factory settings of the router unless necessary. After making changes to the router settings, reboot the device.

Two ways to connect routers

Routers are connected to one local network either by cable or by wireless channel. It is recommended to use devices from the same manufacturer.

Cable connection

Cable " twisted pair"(UTP cable) is laid between the main and additional routers. In the main router, the cable is connected to the LAN socket, and in the additional router - to the WAN socket (this socket is highlighted in color and is sometimes called Internet). With this connection additional router will be for the main thing network device, and the main one for the additional one will act as a provider, distributing the Internet and providing a dynamic IP address.

Before installing an additional router, consider how the cable will be laid and carefully measure the length of the future cable channel. When purchasing a cable, buy one meter longer than measured cable channel, and ask the seller to immediately crimp the ends of the cable into the connectors. If the cable channel runs outside the premises and is exposed to natural influences, then purchase a cable with a reinforced sheath.

Advantages of the method:

  • reliability and stability cable connection;
  • easy setup of both routers;
  • The installation location of the additional router is not limited to the wireless coverage area of the main router.

Disadvantages of the method:

  • the need to purchase and lay cables;
  • When moving the router, the cable will have to be moved to a new location.

Configuring routers when connected by cable

If the main router is already configured to work with the provider and there are no complaints about the work, then you do not need to change anything in the settings.

Make sure that the DHCP function in the main router is enabled to automatically distribute IP addresses on the local network. The start and end IP addresses do not need to be changed.

Setting up an additional router

It is recommended to immediately reset any changes made to the router settings to those preset by the manufacturer. To do this, turn on the router, find on the back panel Reset button, press and hold for 5–7 seconds. To protect against accidental reset of settings, the button is hidden inside the case and can be pressed through the hole using a needle or straightened paper clip.

An example of the location of the reset button on the back panel of the router: the button is hidden inside, only the hole for pressing is visible

In the additional router, two settings are checked and set:

Making changes to the additional router’s own IP address allows you to avoid conflicts between identical addresses on the same network

After changing the router's IP address, to re-access the control panel, enter the new address in the browser address bar.

There is a cable connection option in which the cable is connected to the LAN port of an additional router. This option requires complex setup and does not provide any advantages over connecting via WAN port.

Wi-Fi connection

Advantages of the method:

  • does not require physical connection routers with cable;
  • allows you to easily move an additional router if necessary.

Disadvantages of the method:

  • relative complexity of setup;
  • slowdown in wireless network speed.

The main router receives the Internet from the provider and distributes it via the wireless network LAN1; the additional router receives the Internet wirelessly from the main router and distributes it via the LAN2 wireless network

Configuring routers when connecting via Wi-Fi

When two routers are connected on a local network via a wireless channel, a “bridge” type connection is used, in English Wireless Distribution System (WDS), designed specifically to expand the Wi-Fi coverage area.

Understanding Bridged Connectivity (WDS)

When installing this type of connection, the main router operates in standard mode, and the additional one acts as a Wi-Fi amplifier, receiving and distributing the signal further.

To connect routers in bridge mode, you need to establish a permanent (fixed) communication channel between them and specify the physical addresses of the connected devices in the settings. To set up a “bridge”, both routers are turned on, the main router is configured in advance for the provider, receives and distributes the Internet, and the settings of the additional router are pre-set to factory settings by pressing the Reset button.

Configuring the main router for WDS mode

Mode automatic selection We change the broadcast channel to a fixed channel mode (for example, to the 11th channel).

Installation fixed number channel prevents the router from automatically scanning the air and selecting the least loaded channel. Therefore, if other wireless networks are operating nearby, you may have to manually experimentally select the least loaded channel or use special program For search free channel. The channel number must be changed simultaneously on both routers - the main and additional ones.

Setting up an additional router for WDS mode

On home page In the router control panel, the “WDS Status” line should display “working.” This means that the additional router has connected to the main router and is distributing the Internet.

Video: how to make a Wi-Fi network between routers (WDS)

Creation complex network requires knowledge and experience. If you are confident in your abilities, use our instructions. If you doubt your abilities, it is better to ask for help.

Local Computer networks They can be tiny, consisting of a couple of computers and a smartphone, to huge, covering entire areas and hundreds of subscribers. For routing to small network only need one budget router, even a USB 3G router the size of a matchbox will do, but for large networks dozens of routers are used, and they often work in different modes. How to connect two routers in different modes will be discussed further.

Mode one – peer-to-peer network

This router connection scheme satisfies the following conditions:

  1. There are two independent networks. For example, neighboring houses;
  2. In each of the networks in each home there are network printers and network data storages (USB hard disks with movies connected to the router);
  3. One of the computers on the first network has Internet access, but the second network does not.

The challenge is to unite these two networks network cable twisted pair so that between all computers, printers and network storages both networks were connected, and every computer on both networks had access to the Internet through that single gateway. In other words - do single network with general Internet access.

Connecting networks with routers

To implement this scheme, you need to configure both routers. Let's start with the first one, which looks at the Internet.

Setting up your first router

Go to the router settings menu and configure Internet access. The settings are entered through the web browser to which the router is connected. The IP address of the router is indicated in the instructions for quick installation, can also be found on the label under the bottom of the device. As an example of settings, we give TP-Link router 741 ND.

Go to the “WAN” menu item.

Setting up an Internet connection

Type WAN connections specified in the agreement with the provider, select it in the list, if necessary, enter a login and password (if the type is PPPoE).

Enabling DHCP

We specify a range of addresses by assigning a start and end address.

Wi-Fi setup

In the SSID field we indicate the network name, all other fields are left at default. If you need to protect the network, then in the security settings we specify a password for connecting to Wi-Fi.

And, lastly, we assign an IP address to the router 192.168.1.1.

Setting up a second router

We also connect the computer to the second router and go to the settings. Go to the LAN settings and assign the router the IP address 192.168.1.2.

Next, set up wireless Wi-Fi. The settings may be absolutely identical to those on the first router, or they may be different - it doesn’t matter. For convenience, of course, it is better that they coincide, there is only one wireless network, but during the search they will be reflected as two networks. It's not fatal though.

Save the settings and reboot the router.

Attention! Only after setting up both routers do we connect them with a twisted pair network cable! Not before setting up!

Both ends of the patch cord should only be connected to LAN ports both routers. The port number is not important.

That's it, we launch routers, computers, and enjoy a perfectly working computer network.

Bridge mode setup

Next, let's look at another mode that works in bridge mode. The difference between this scheme and the previous one is that the routers are configured to wireless Wi-Fi net. Routers from TP-Link are again used as an example.

In bridge mode, you can combine more than two routers, and, accordingly, more than two networks. The only important condition is that if other routers are used, they must support bridge mode.

Let's start by setting up the first device.

Setting up your first router

Go to the settings of the first device in which you need to change standard IP address. This is done in the Network menu, LAN submenu.

Changing IP address

It is necessary that each of the routers have its own address, otherwise an address conflict will occur and the network will not work.

Change to 192.168.1.2. Click “Save”.

Setting Bridge Mode

Set the network name, select the channel, and check the box next to “Enable Bridges”. In the “Mac of AP1” field we enter the mac address of the second router. The address can be found in the setup instructions or on the label under the bottom of the second router.

Save the settings and reboot the router.

Setting up a second router

Important note - Wi-Fi channels(Channel) must match on both routers! If the first router looks at the Internet, then be sure to disable DHCP on the second router! The network names (SSID) of both routers may be the same, but you can assign different ones, it doesn’t matter.

Implementation of the router router connection diagram

There are two ways serial connection two routers. The first and simplest is through a wire. Most likely, you will not be interested in him, but I will still say a few words about him. The second method is to connect via wireless communication(Wi-Fi), this question is a little more complicated, but we will analyze it in detail.

Connecting two routers via wire

To begin with, we need a twisted pair wire (UTP cable) crimped on both sides, length, equal to the distance between two routers.

Then take any two Wi-Fi routers and connect them. We take the first router (the one on which the Internet is configured) and connect the “UTP cable” to the “LAN” port, insert “UTP cable” into the second router (the one that will transmit the Internet signal further) UTP cable» to the “WAN” port. That’s it, now we just configure both routers, the first one for your provider, and the second one for “dynamic ip”. You can read how to do this in these articles (configuring a router, , ,). Attention, the internal IP address of the second router must be different from the first.

.

Wireless connection of two routers

This type of connection is simple in plan physical work(no need to pull the cable from point A to point B). The complexity of this method lies in setting up the equipment. Let's look at it in more detail. So, we need any Wi-Fi router to which the Internet will connect (in the future we will call it the first one) and a router that works as an access point in “Repeater mode” (in the future we will call it the Second one). There are plenty of such access points, cheap and expensive, but I will offer you an access point from the TP Link company “TP-Link TL-WA901N”. This “access point” is reliable and easy to configure. After we have configured and connected the Internet to the first router, we install and connect the computer to the second router (to TP-Link TL-WA901N). Now let's configure the computer to connect to the access point. Using the example of an operating room Windows systems 7 –> Go to “Start” and look there for “ Control Panel", find and click on "Network and Internet", then " Network and Sharing Center shared access " In the left column of the menu we find the item “ Change adapter settings» go in, click right key mouse on " LAN connection", select "Properties" from the drop-down list. In the checkbox list, select “ Internet Protocol Version 4 (TPC/IPv4)"And click the "properties" button. We move the point to " Use the following IP address"and make the settings:

Click "OK". Now open any browser and enter 192.168.1.254 in the address bar (this is the default address of the point, it should be indicated at the bottom of the point, if there is another one, enter it). Then press “Enter” or go. The authorization window “Login and Password” should appear by default “admin and admin”. Once on the page, in the left column select: “ Wireless network » -> « Wireless Settings" Opposite the inscription “Operation mode”, select Universal repeater.

Then click the “Search” button. In the list of wireless networks, look for our network and click “connect"

Then you need to click on the “save” button and reboot the access point. The next thing you need to do is configure your security settings. Let's go to " Wireless network"then select " Safety wireless connection " The most important thing is to set the same security settings as on the first router, otherwise the point will not work as it should.

Let's reboot the point again. Next we need to make sure that the point works as it should. Go to the “Status” tab and, while refreshing the page, look at the “Channel” If it changes, there are problems with the security settings. Let's go back and check everything again. You can also set a specific “channel” on the first device.

That's it, setup Wireless connection two routers is completed, now you can use the Internet.
