When was the 1st generation iPod released? How to distinguish between generations of iPod touch

In 2007, the whole world was gripped by an intense desire to purchase a brand new phone from Apple, so the first generation music player iPod touch it became appearance reduced a copy of the iPhone with dimensions 110x61.8x7.3 mm.

Without a radio transmitting module and GPS, it could not be a means of communication, although it could well be positioned as a PDA thanks to its electronic filling. But the company's sales department noticed in time that they were already starting to go out of fashion, so a smart marketing decision was made to present the new product as a player.

This is a kind of super player controlled by a microprocessor and with built-in memory of 8, 16 and even 32 GB. Its front part is made of black plastic, covered with impact-resistant glass, and the back part is made of metal, which appealed to energetic young people. In addition, the light weight of 101 grams is completely unnoticeable in a shirt or jeans pocket.

Review of the second generation device – 2G

In 2008, the iPod Touch is “dressed” in new building made of stainless steel, which is similar in shape to the iPhone 3G. For greater similarity, volume buttons and a built-in speaker are added, so now owners have the opportunity to listen to music without connecting headphones.

Thanks to the improved battery, music listening time has increased from 24 to 36 hours, and video viewing from 5 to 6 hours. Depending on the models, memory with a capacity of 8, 16 or 32 GB was built into the player, which fully satisfied the needs of consumers. Despite noticeable improvements, the weight of the product has increased to only 115 grams.

Starting with this generation, Nike+ support was added to the iPod Touch, with the help of which it became possible to jog under the supervision of a “personal trainer.” Receiving signals from the sensor built into the shoes, the player counts the distance traveled and calories burned, which it reports in a pleasant voice and plays music during pauses.

Third generation iPod Touch (3G)

In 2009, they did not change the case, but they took the hardware seriously. The model with 8 GB of memory on board remained virtually unchanged, with the exception of the updated iOS bootloader – BootLoader.

iPod Touch 3G (32, 64 GB) models began to be installed new processor ARM Cortex A8 with clock frequency 600MHz and an additional PowerVR SGX535 graphics accelerator chip. This immediately improved the quality of playback of video files and made it possible to run more modern games. Volume increase random access memory up to 256 MB gave a sharp increase in player performance by 50%.

The device has a 3.5-inch touch screen with a resolution of 480x320 pixels, which is the best in this segment of devices. Older models (32, 64 GB) began to support OpenGL ES Version 2.0, which greatly delighted gamers and active surfers. Now it has become much more convenient to surf the Internet using the built-in Safari browser. I was also pleased with the slight increase in battery capacity, because new filling requires more energy resources.

2010 was a decisive year for the line iPods Touch. The devices have received many improvements and are rightfully considered the best in their segment. If earlier they were perceived as a stripped-down iPhone, now they are very close to it.

The player has become so thin that if you put two iPod Touches of the 4th generation together, they will be as thick as a compact iPhone 4. Moreover, they have the same screens high resolution Retina Display with a resolution of 960x640 px. In a very clear image, the pixels are completely invisible, so you can safely raise the brightness to maximum. The brightness reserve is quite noticeable, and the use of automatic backlight adjustment allows you to adjust its level depending on the external lighting conditions. So even in bright sunshine you will be able to clearly see the image on the device screen.

The 4th generation iPod touch features the Apple A4 processor, which is also used in the iPhone 4. It provides more stable work And accelerated launch device. GPS module is not provided, so the player determines its position using Wi-Fi networks. Just like the phone, it is now equipped with a gyroscope, which will provide more fun for active gamers.

iOS 4 bootloader supports better bluetooth protocol AVRCP, so you can now manage tracks, adjust volume and play the device from headsets and headphones that support A2DP.

It is now possible to control the iPod touch with your voice through the built-in microphone when playing music thanks to the implemented function Voice Control. The sound of the device itself has also improved - a special port with a new speaker has been installed. This combination of a high-quality speaker and an omnidirectional microphone makes it possible to make Skype/VoIP calls without using a headset. Find the point Wi-Fi access and you are already in touch.

iPod touch 4th generation has two cameras: front and rear. The front one is designed to capture the image of the user’s face, and with the help rear camera you can shoot video with a resolution of 720p (1280x720), which is a complete surprise for the player. A light sensor is located next to the lens, which improves the quality of shooting in low light.

Another pleasant innovation is the reduced weight of the device - now the player weighs only 101 grams. So Apple was able to pack as many features as possible into a small, lightweight package.

Meet the fast iPod touch 5G player

Imagine, this is not a marketing ploy, but a real fact. For the first time, the player can boast the performance of a full-fledged iPhone, albeit the 4S version.

Launched in October 2012, the iPod touch 5G immediately attracted attention. Now its body is made not of polished steel, but of rough aluminum, which is much more practical. In addition, it is available in colors: dark grey, silver, pink, blue, yellow and red.

The body increased in height, but lost some weight (123?59?6 mm), and the weight decreased to 88 g. At the same time, the developers managed to increase the capacity battery up to 1030 mAh, which allows you to listen to music for 40 hours or watch videos for 8 hours.

Among the controls we can distinguish metal Power button on the top end, and on the left are volume buttons. On the back cover of the device there are: a protruding camera lens, a microphone hole, an LED flash, a plug for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth units, as well as a spring-loaded button for the Loop cord. On the bottom edge there is a 3.5 mm headphone connector, a Lightning port and a speaker behind neat holes.

Retina display in new iPod touch 5G is similar to the iPhone 5, so the image quality is commendable. With a resolution of 1136x640 pixels and a pixel density of 326 DPI, it has amazing color reproduction, which is distinguished by natural colors and an amazing level of “black”.

Thanks to the wide viewing angle, you won’t notice colors inverted on an IPS screen, and in bright conditions sunlight he practically does not go blind. Add to this durable glass with an oleophobic coating, and you will understand how good new player in operation.

The device has two cameras: main and front. The main 5 MP camera, made on the basis of a 5-element lens, allows you to record video in 1080p quality at 30 frames/sec. The front FaceTime HD camera (1.2 MP) is more modest: 720p at 30 fps.

The hardware can please you dual core processor Apple A5 (2 Cortex-A9 cores) with a clock frequency of 800 MHz and 512 MB of RAM. Depending on the model, the device is equipped with 32 or 64 GB of memory, which is enough for music, movies and many applications.

The device runs iOS 6 and after practical tests showed significantly increased performance. New graphics subsystem provides good speed interface operation, quick start heavyweight applications and 3D graphics processing. The conclusion is clear - new device really good!

IN Lately our readers ask a lot of questions about players iPod touch. Many of them are related to differences in models different generations. Indeed, on this moment Almost all generations of the device can be found on store shelves and flea markets. How to distinguish iPod Touch 1st generation from iPod Touch 2nd generation etc. we will tell you in this article.

In contact with

is an evolutionary development of the iPod line. Differs from previous models in the first place big screen and the presence of wireless Wi-Fi module. Among the technological features of the line, it is worth noting the multi-touch that migrated from the iPhone (the screen recognizes more than one touch at a time) and the ability wireless connection to iTunes and App Store. Thus, the first generation of iPod Touch allowed you to download additional paid and free content to the device. At the moment there are five generations of the player.

It was announced on September 5, 2007 first generation iPod Touch(1 gen). His appearance was due to in great demand on . However, not everyone needed a device with a GSM module to make calls. The iPod became a cheaper copy of the phone with almost identical capabilities. The players went on sale 4 days after the announcement. In general, it is worth noting that iPod players did not lag behind the iPhone in development and always kept pace with them in terms of “stuffing” and the screens of the devices were always almost identical. The differences between players and phones are the dimensions and design of the back panel. All iPod touch had a metal “back”, unlike the iPhone, and the players did not yet have a built-in digital compass and GPS. It's worth noting that Apple's policy applies to all devices. All devices without GSM module do not have GPS. Likewise, iPads with and without 3G differ in the presence and absence of GPS, respectively.

A year later, on September 9, 2008, the world saw second generation iPod Touch(2 gen). The developers made the player more similar to the one released in the same year iPhone 3G. With the exception of back cover, in the iPod it remained metal. The player received external speaker, volume control buttons and a reinforced battery. The player allowed you to enjoy music for up to 36 hours and watch videos for up to 6 hours. The weight of the device increased slightly and became 115 grams. Since this generation, a personal trainer has appeared on the iPod - the Nike+ application.
On September 9, 2009, the line was updated again. Design third generation iPod touch(3 gen) player has not changed, just as it has not changed iPhone design 3GS, but the insides of the device have improved significantly. A faster 600 MHz processor, double the amount of RAM, which was 256 MB, and additional graphics chip PowerVR SGX535 made it possible to increase the player's performance to new level. Now it was possible to watch high-resolution videos and play the most modern games at that time. The improvement in hardware did not at all affect the autonomy of the gadget.

Fourth generation iPod Touch
(4 gen) appeared on September 8, 2010. The player had many differences from its predecessor and was as close as possible to the iPhone in terms of the hardware installed inside. Like the revolutionary iPhone 4, which appeared in the same 2010, the fourth generation iPod Touch received a magnificent Retina display with a resolution of 960 x 640 pixels. At the same time the player was doubled thinner than a phone. Both devices came with Apple processor A4. IN iPod touch 4G appeared, implemented earlier in the iPhone, Voice function Control for voice control and external microphone. The iPod has two cameras. For the first time in the line, devices with a white front surface appeared; before that there were only black options. The weight of the device has dropped to 101 grams, and autonomy, as always, remains at the same level.
In 2011, Apple did not release a new generation of player with iPhone release 4S. The latest one, at the moment, was published on September 12, 2012. The player received a screen enlarged to 4″. Color palette has expanded significantly and now players are available in white, black, red, blue, pink and yellow flowers. The model began to be equipped with a new headset. All innovations (except for color) are dictated. For the first time in the line, the connector for the cable and docking station has changed, it is a new .

The first iPod appeared in 2001. In six years, he has already changed six generations. I propose to conduct a small historical excursion and see how the iPod has changed and developed.

iPod, first generation
The very first iPod appeared on October 23, 2001 (soon to be 6 years old!). The disk capacity was only 5 GB (compare with modern models:) The player could play music for 12 hours, and the proprietary control wheel was not yet touch-sensitive.

iPod, second generation
The second generation iPod was released on July 17, 2002. Unlike the first generation, the iPod 2G was released in two versions - for working with Windows and for Mac OS. There were modifications with 5, 10 and 20 GB.

iPod, third generation
The third generation of the player appeared on April 28, 2003 and came with 5, 10 or 20 GB, and then 15, 20 and 40 GB of disk space. The player's operating time was even less than that of the first version - only 8 hours.

iPod mini, first generation
Next iPod version'a was the iPod mini, which came out on January 6, 2004. iPod mini had smaller sizes, a 4 GB disk and was available in several colors. It was in this version that the famous ClickWheel control wheel appeared.

iPod mini, second generation
The second generation of iPod mini was released on February 22, 2004. The most significant improvement was the increase in time battery life until 18 o'clock. In addition, the player has a 6 GB modification.

iPod, fourth generation (iPod Photo)
The fourth generation iPod, also known as iPod Photo, was released in July 2004. At first the player was released with a monochrome display, but since 2005, iPod Photo has had a color display capable of displaying 65 thousand colors. The disk capacity was 20 or 40 GB, later - 20 or 60 GB. The player could work up to 12 hours without recharging.

iPod shuffle, first generation
iPod shuffle is the simplest and cheapest player in the series. The first shuffle appeared on January 11, 2005 and was released with 512 MB or 1 GB of memory on board. Battery life - 12 hours.

iPod nano, first generation
iPod nano was Apple's first flash memory-based player. The player appeared on September 7, 2005. The first generation nano was produced in three versions - with 1, 2 and 4 GB of memory. Besides iPod music nano 1G could show JPEG images, BMP, GIF and other formats. The battery charge was enough for 14 jobs.

iPod, fifth generation (iPod Video)
On October 12, 2005, the iPod 5G, known as iPod Video, was released. Firstly, this player could play video. Secondly, it could boast impressive volumes disk space(30, 60 and 80 GB) and for a long time work (up to 20 hours).

The second generation iPod nano was released on September 12, 2006. Compared to the first generation, it had double the amount of memory (2, 4 or 8 GB), an improved case and more bright screen, was produced in several colors and could work up to 24 hours without recharging

iPod shuffle, second generation
The player was released in October 2006. The second generation Shuffle turned out to be completely different from its predecessor. The memory capacity was increased to 1 GB, the battery life remained at the same level - 12 hours.

iPod, sixth generation ( iPod classic)
The player was introduced on September 5, 2007. From the sixth iPod generation became known as the iPod classic. Disk capacity is 80 or 160 GB (!). Battery life has also been improved - iPod classic can last 30 hours as an audio player or 5 as a video player. The 160 GB model has even higher figures - 40 and 7 hours, respectively.

iPod nano, third generation
The third generation of iPod nano, also introduced on September 5, 2007, is very different from its predecessor. The memory capacity has traditionally doubled - modifications with 4 and 8 GB are available. The operating time is 24 hours in audio mode and 5 in video mode. Yes, this is the most important thing - iPod nano now supports video too!

iPod shuffle, third generation
The only difference between the new shuffle, released on September 5, 2007, is the presence of a special RED version, the proceeds from the sale of which will go to charity.

Let's finish our review with the most amazing new product, still presented on September 5, 2007 (a surprisingly rich day for iPod releases;) The iPod touch is what many wanted, an iPod with iPhone interface. In addition to the revolutionary interface for the iPod, the player boasts 8 or 16 GB of memory, 22 hours of audio playback and 5 hours of video playback, and most importantly, Wi-Fi and a built-in Safari browser!

This concludes our chronological review. But it is quite possible that in six months it will have to be supplemented :)

Why is there news in such a minor tone again? It’s as if we were seeing off this, as they said above, “alien device” and “premium class Mercedes” :)

My acquaintance with Apple (personal, not correspondence) also began with Tach. The task was to choose a new player; before that, I had been looking at the Classic for a year. But even the 80GB model, being very thin at that time – about 11 mm, if I’m not mistaken – instantly faded into the background after getting acquainted with the indecently thin touchscreen. And once you tried kinetic scrolling, feeling the interface’s pliability to your every touch, other options were simply not considered. In addition, the combination of glass and polished metal (yes, so reviled, but apparently there is some sacred meaning in this polishing), which made us treat the technological gadget as a jewelry toy, for example, swiss watches. Plus the Internet, plus an organizer, plus... But enough is enough :) But even then we didn’t know about the software that would pour into these devices! I hope my attitude towards the wheelbarrow is clear.

But... everything would be fine, if not the memory. 8 and 16 GB did not suit me at the time of release. I want it, I can afford it – but there’s no point in taking a device if the whole collection doesn’t fit (yes, that’s me :)). And even the 32GB model that came out soon, half a year later, was not satisfactory - 64GB and that’s it! That’s why the second generation passed me by without forcing me to part with the contents of my wallet. I had to wait another year, and here is the 3rd touch! Maybe you remember how much noise there was on the forums: they increased the memory - and that’s basically it??? And for me, this was the most important, relevant upgrade of characteristics, because... only this characteristic transferred the long-awaited device from the category of objects of desire to the first and only candidate for purchase. The only one, because and I still can’t immediately name another flash player that has a standard (i.e. as a single block, and not memory expandable through cards. That's how the 3rd touch became my player.

It’s strange to hear skeptics doubt that there will be no more wheelbarrows. Doesn’t the fact that this is an iOS device, in which Apple is vitally interested in expanding the base and proudly announces the number of devices delivered to the market, say anything? Doesn’t anyone listen to music anymore and players aren’t needed at all anymore? I don’t think so... And an iPhone may not be suitable for everyone, but a combination of a dialer and a Touch is easy.

There are reserves for growth, I have no doubt about it. The simplest thing is to play with the colors; photos of the white front panels seem to be circulating already. What else? We increase the volume to 128GB, do you think this is a lot? Remember the “weight” of current applications, many easily reach 0.5 - 1 GB. Next, you can finally build in a radio, there will be one more feature. And I would also install a second speaker for better voiceover of applications. Don't remember the disassembly last year's model on iFixit? The power button has moved to the opposite edge of the top end, freeing up space for the symmetrical placement of the second speaker to the first one. bottom end. And the photo from iFixit just demonstrated that in this very place there is now a plastic white plug, the so-called. space-saver. And also the resolution and quality of the cameras, battery power, screen size (if they increase it in the iPhone, then why not do the same in the wheelbarrow)? In short, there are a lot of reserves for growth and development, and these are just trivial thoughts that lie on the surface.

The tablet market is developing, so why shouldn’t this mini-tablet, computer, PDA continue to exist? And - I repeat, this is important for me - a player?

@Sla337 , +100500)
It always seemed strange to people screaming about the uselessness of an iPod, given the presence of an iPhone on the market. I use both at the same time. Much more convenient than listening to music from your phone.

@Sla337, WHY THE FUCK do you need 64 gigs for music? I don't understand this!

@XOsman, you also can’t understand the owners of the Classic, who already had 80GB and I don’t remember how many years ago? Who then bought 120, 160 gigabyte models and would like to have even more capacious ones?

I have already explained 10 times on different forums, including on this site, that the beauty of having the entire collection with you is that you decide what you will listen to not at the moment you connect to the computer, but directly at the moment when this desire arises . I’ve read it so many times: “8GB is enough for me, I upload everything I love there and go ahead. And you’ll never listen to 64GB again.” Yeah, that’s exactly why you won’t listen to your collection for this very reason, that the same thing is constantly uploaded, and the archive has been “gathering dust” on your PC for years. If not large volume memory on the player, I would never have brought myself to upload the entire discography of Led Zeppelin and Kraftwerk, Chris Isaac and the Beatles, DDT and Kino into it. If only you knew how many unexpected discoveries you make when, on the road, by chance or simply at random, you choose an album you’ve never listened to and suddenly find a highlight, and sometimes even a diamond and a previously unknown artist becomes a new favorite and favorite of the playlist for months to come. I don’t argue, in theory this can be done on a computer, but I listen to music mostly on the go, on the road, on my feet, and not sitting at home in a chair. Although this also happens :)

Let me clarify one more thing: I never download individual tracks, only entire albums with fully written tags, covers, and often with lyrics (i.e., texts). And I view the Touch as a player, although the functions of a handheld and a mobile gaming platform are also in demand.

So now for me there is only one intrigue: what to choose from the expected new products - a 128GB Touch or a 64GB iPhone;)

16 years ago, on October 23, 2001, Apple introduced the iPod mp3 player, which later became the world's most popular portable audio player. The gadget not only “killed” massive players with audio cassettes and CDs, but also revolutionized the music player market.

iPod first generations
Apple promoted the first generation iPod with the slogan "1,000 songs in your pocket." The gadget is made in a compact white case, has 5 or 10 GB of user space and is equipped with a ClickWheel - a scroll wheel that allows you to quickly scroll through hundreds of songs. The iPod lasted up to 12 hours on a single battery charge and cost $399. The device attracted buyers so much that they were not bothered by the exotic FireWire port instead of USB, which limited the iPod's compatibility strictly with Apple computers.

Second generation iPod

The second generation of the famous player was left without external changes, but the size of the user space has increased to 10 or 20 GB depending on the modification, and the scroll wheel has become touch-sensitive. Also, this version of the iPod was released in two versions - iPod for Windows and iPod for macOS.

Third generation iPod

The third generation of iPod underwent a major redesign - the scroll wheel remained in its usual place, and four large music playback control buttons appeared above it. This is the first iPod to use a 30-pin connector. The kit included a case with a belt clip, two plugs for the 30-pin port, and a docking station (except for the 10 GB model). Modifications of 10, 20 and 40 GB were available for sale.

iPod mini

The next version of the iPod was the pass-through iPod mini, which was released on January 6, 2004. It is made in compact body, received only 4 GB and was produced in several color options. In this version, ClickWheel was changed again - control buttons were returned to the wheel.

iPod was released on February 22, 2004 mini second generations. Apple has installed more than capacious battery, allowing you to play music for 18 hours, and also increased the amount of built-in storage to 6 GB.

Fourth generation iPod (iPod Photo)

The fourth generation iPod, also known as iPod Photo, was released in July 2004. At first the player was produced with a monochrome display, but in 2005 the company released iPod Photo with a color matrix capable of displaying 65 thousand colors. The user space capacity was 20 or 40 GB, and later 30 and 60 GB versions appeared.

First generation iPod shuffle

iPod shuffle has become Apple's simplest and cheapest player. The first shuffle was introduced on January 11, 2005 and was available with 512 MB or 1 GB of internal memory. Battery life - 12 hours. Weight - 22 grams.

First generation iPod nano

iPod nano was produced in three versions - with 1, 2 and 4 GB of user space. In addition to displaying track and album titles, the first generation iPod nano could display JPEG, BMP, GIF, and other image formats. A full battery charge lasted for 14 hours of music playback.

Fifth generation iPod (iPod Video)

On October 12, 2005, the iPod 5G, better known as iPod Video, was released. It became the first Apple player capable of playing video. Built-in memory sizes are 30, 60 and 80 GB. Battery life is almost 20 hours. Also, after updating the firmware, it became possible to run some games on the iPod.

iPod nano second generation

Compared to the first generation, it had double the memory (2, 4 or 8 GB), an improved anodized aluminum body and a brighter screen. The iPod came in several colors and could last up to 24 hours on a single charge.

The second generation Shuffle turned out to be completely different from its predecessor - it became three times smaller, and a clip appeared on the body, allowing it to be attached to clothing. The amount of user space is 1 or 2 GB. Produced in 9 colors.

Sixth generation iPod (iPod classic)

Beginning with the sixth generation, the iPod became known as the iPod classic. Built-in memory capacity (the player has HDD) is a record for those times 80, 120 and 160 GB. Battery life - 30 hours of music playback and 5 hours of playback. For the 160 GB model, these figures are even higher - 40 and 7 hours, respectively. iPod classic was released.

The third generation of iPod nano received 4 and 8 GB of memory and increased operating time. The gadget also began to support video playback. In addition, the player received cosmetic improvements, as well as a brighter two-inch color display.

iPod touch first generations

The first iPod with Wi-Fi and MultiTouch interface came out a little later first iPhone. The player, like the iPhone, was controlled by operating system iOS. iPod touch was equipped with a 3.5-inch touch display resolution 480 x 320 pixels. Touch control completely replaced ClickWheel and only the Home button remained on the front panel. The volume of built-in memory is 8 and 16 GB.

The fourth generation of iPod nano has undergone a major redesign: the player has been stretched out and completely changed color scheme. iPod nano now has an accelerometer and landscape mode. You could buy 4, 8 and 16 GB versions.

The gadget has changed a little in appearance, received a Bluetooth module and a more capacious battery. Operating time from a full battery charge is up to 36 hours in audio mode and 6 in video mode.

The player was the first to use VoiceOver technology, which could read artist names and song titles in 20 languages. For the first time, support for multiple playlists appeared. The player weighs only 10.7 grams. Memory capacity - 2 and 4 GB.

Apple slightly increased the display resolution to 376 by 220 and added a built-in camera. There were models with 8 and 16 GB of memory to choose from in eight body colors.

The design has not changed. The set includes new headphones equipped with a microphone. The processor performance and RAM capacity were also increased from 128 to 256 MB. The voice control function VoiceControl has appeared.

Support for the device ended with iOS release 6.1.6.

The iPod nano has been pulled out once again - it will no longer be a smart watch. The model was produced only with 16 GB of memory. The player weighs 31 grams. In April 2015 Apple of the Year released additional body colors.

It is not known whether the company will forget about these devices or whether in the near future we will see, for example, the seventh generation iPod touch. The company recently stopped production and sales of the iPod nano and iPod shuffle players, and also closed the pages dedicated to them on the official website.
