Nothing complicated: you need to enable the "Align to Grid" function, known since Windows XP. This cannot be solved through the operating system settings due to the lack of an option, but the interval is easily adjusted through the system registry. To change the distance between desktop icons (shortcuts):

  • press the logo key Windows() → in the search field enter regedit.exe → "Enter";
  • in the registry editor expand the branch HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics ;

  • In chapter WindowMetrics parameter IconSpacing defines the horizontal distance between icons (the default value is "-1725", in Windows 8.1 / 7 the default value was "-1125", i.e. the labels were closer horizontally), set its value in the range from "-480" to "-2730";
  • parameter IconVerticalSpacing defines the vertical distance between icons (default value is "-1725"), has the same minimum and maximum values ​​as IconSpacing.

Having set the optimal distance between desktop elements, restart the computer or force close and restart Explorer. For example, let's display a Word shortcut on the desktop.

For the Word text editor, the path will be like this. Using Windows Explorer or the Total Commander file manager, find the Program Files folder, in it - the Microsoft Office folder, then
open the OFFICE11 folder and find the WINWORD.exe file in it

On the found file, right-click to open the context menu, and then act

Find its folder in Program Files, then find the file that launches the program in the folder
(most often it has the extension .exe, but there are others). If you don’t immediately understand which file is launching, double-click it and try to launch it. If the program starts, then everything is correct, this is the main file. Display the shortcut from it on the desktop using the method

Note: You cannot delete anything in the Program Files folder using the Delete button. Otherwise the program
which is located in this folder will stop working!

How to rename a desktop icon

If you don't like the name assigned to the shortcut by the Windows program, for example, Shortcut for Word, then you can change it.

To do this, hover the cursor over the shortcut (icon), right-click to open the context menu and select the item Rename. Immediately the signature text under the label will be highlighted and you can remove the words “Shortcut for”, or completely rename the shortcut. After this, be sure to press the Enter key - only then will your name be saved.

Paying attention that such actions (rename, delete) can be performed only with shortcuts(they have a small black arrow in the lower left corner of the label). Files
programs located in their own folders in Program Files cannot be renamed! Otherwise they will stop working. You can only display shortcuts from them, and do what you want with the shortcuts!

In order not to have to drag a shortcut to the desktop, you can use the “send” function; to do this, you need to right-click on the file (shortcut or folder) and select “send” and “Desktop (create shortcut)” in the menu that appears.

You can send a shortcut for a particular program to the Start menu, or rather the left part of it, which opens immediately, as follows - right-click on the file that launches the program or on the shortcut and select “Pin to Start Menu” .

You can also add a shortcut to the “All Programs” menu by right-clicking on the “Start” button and selecting “Open a common menu for all”. In the folder that opens, you need to open the “Programs” directory and copy the desired shortcut into it.

  5. You need to open the browser shortcut properties again. And click the “Change icon” button. A window will open with many icons, but Odnoklassniki will naturally not be among them. Therefore, you need to click on “Browse” and select one of the pictures that you saved to your desktop. Install it and save the changes.
  6. The final touch is to pin the Odnoklassniki shortcut to the taskbar. Just press and hold the browser shortcut with the left mouse button and drag it to the taskbar.
