The legendary Voice of the Theater was not originally intended for use in home audio systems. Over the years, many models with the letter A in the name were produced - A2, A4, A7, A5, but at the time of their release they were revolutionary speakers with a permanent magnet made of Alnico V alloy. The first household version with the index 820A appeared only in 1956 , after Voice of The Theater was established as the world standard for use in cinemas in 1953. The popular option most commonly found in home systems today typically includes an Altec 288 driver, Altec 515 woofer, 828 cabinets, and 511 horn, but many other combinations exist. “Voices” is distinguished by a soulful and very believable presentation of vocals and live instruments, helped by the fact that the horn driver reproduces the entire range from 500 Hz and above. On the other hand, at the edges of the frequency range they no longer feel so confident, hence numerous attempts to improve them with the help of tweeters and even subwoofers. In fact, such handwriting is natural for these speakers, so they should be accepted as they are.

JBL 4343/4345/4350

The JBL 43 series was created for work in studios, and not at all for home use. However, as often happens, it received its legendary status precisely after it became widespread in Hi-Fi systems audiophiles, especially in Japan. Studio workers, on the contrary, often criticized the large four-way monitors of this series for their excessive emotionality, saying that listening to music on them is very pleasant, but not always working. Nevertheless, the 43rd series found its place in many recording studios, and as they were written off and entered the homes of music lovers, a real hunt began for the remaining copies. Their prices have long exceeded all reasonable limits; with the original price of a pair of new JBL 4345 being $2,200, today the average price of a refurbished pair on the secondary market has exceeded 15,000. On the other hand, JBL continues to produce monitors with a blue front panel and the numbers 43 in the name, for example, JBL 4367 or JBL 4348. True, in terms of sound signature they differ significantly from their predecessors, much more consistent with the title of “studio monitor”.

Yamaha NS-1000

The world's first acoustic systems with diffusers made of pure beryllium appeared on the market in... 1976. It is not surprising that they were produced by a Japanese company; in those years, manufacturers in the Land of the Rising Sun actively experimented with different materials when creating loudspeakers. Therefore, the Japanese were the first to make diffusers made of metal, which is considered one of the most advanced for the production of speakers. Of course, only the high- and mid-frequency speakers were equipped with beryllium domes; the woofer here is of a more traditional design. Despite the advanced design of the Yamaha NS-1000, not all listeners liked them - in combination with the transistor electronics of those years, the monitors sounded quite harsh, but their excellent detail was still impressive. First, let's look at a few terms so we don't have to dwell on them later.

Satellites (from Latin satellitis - satellite)- speakers in x.1 formats for reproducing mid- and high-frequency sounds.

Subwoofer- speaker for playback low frequency range sound frequencies (from 20 to 350 Hz). A subwoofer (or bass speaker) is the most powerful speaker in an acoustic system and often surpasses all satellites combined in power.

Now let’s look at the main formats of speaker systems:

2.0 - simple stereo. The system consists of two speakers, which are most often installed on the table at the edges of the monitor. It is necessary to take into account the distance between the speakers and not place them closely together. The speakers are designed to reproduce medium and high frequencies (two-way), individual models can also reproduce low frequencies (three-band).

2.1 - a subwoofer is added to the stereo speakers - a special device for reproducing low frequencies. The placement of a 2.1 speaker system is comparable to a 2.0 configuration, except that the subwoofer is usually located lower (on a special shelf or floor) and away from the satellites. The subwoofer reproduces only low frequencies, and the satellites reproduce high and medium frequencies. 4.0 - quadraphonic speaker system. This speaker provides surround sound. The satellites are located at the four corners of the square, and the listener should be in the middle between them.
