How to add new fonts in Windows. Methods for installing fonts on Windows

Sometimes you want to decorate something in your system. Why not change the fonts? They are used not only in the system itself, but also in frequently used programs such as Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator and word. This article will talk about this. Well, in addition, I will show how you can smooth fonts, change their size and where they are located.

Let's start the installation.

First you need to download them. There are a lot of such sites on the Internet now, you can search for yourself, but still I will give a few links -,.

You need to remember when searching and choosing that not all fonts support the Cyrillic alphabet, so sometimes you have to refuse quite attractive fonts.

Found it? Liked? Have you downloaded it? Great!

Font files have .ttf resolution and need to be installed following the path Start - Control Panel - Fonts.
When opened, a window will appear with installed fonts

You can install it in two ways:

1) drag your font into this window

2) double-click on the downloaded font and click Install

By the way, if you want smooth fonts- click on the link on the left Setting Clear Type and turn it on, it will make the text smoother and easier to read. Not so harsh.

It's logical that change font size click Changing the font size

where we change the percentage of increase.
Well, if that’s not enough, then there’s a tab below Different font size

where you can also change it, but more carefully, changing the scale as a percentage

The list of fonts installed on your computer can be seen by opening it in the Control Panel ( Control Panel) folder with the characteristic name “Fonts”. More precisely, you should follow the route “Start” - “Control Panel” - “Fonts”.

The fonts folder contains an incomplete list of fonts. Some programs use their own fonts, which can only be viewed using those “owning” programs.

Sometimes programs “clamp” even the most regular fonts. To get to the fonts, you need to open the program and find the “Font” command in it. It is hidden somewhere in the depths of the menu in the program, and there look for the desired “Font Viewer”.

Let's go back to the fonts folder in the Control Panel.

In Windows 7, fonts can be found if

  • click “Start” (1 in Fig. 1) and
  • in the bottom line “Search” (2 in Fig. 1) enter the word: fonts.
  • After this, the “Fonts” folder will be found (3 in Fig. 1):

Rice. 1. How to find fonts in Windows 7 via Start – Search

To see an example of a font in the Fonts folder, double-click its icon.

By clicking the Print button, you can print a sample font.

Clicking “Finish” will remove the font preview window from the screen.

Several types of icons are visible in the fonts folder. Those icons with two blue letters“T” is TrueTure. Even with significant increase these fonts remain readable and do not lose their attractiveness.

A more recent counterpart to these green O fonts is also a vector, scalable OpenType font.

Screen fonts found in the fonts folder have a red "A" on them. They are. The numbers below the font name mean acceptable. If these sizes are increased significantly, jaggies will appear on the font characters.

In the fonts folder you can compare fonts. This is done in order to determine similar fonts. I'll give two possible options when similar fonts may be needed.

First, you need to highlight some fragments of the text, and in such a way that it does not “hurt your eyes.” Similar fonts are perfect for this. The second option is that the result of printing on the printer does not satisfy you compared to how it looked on the screen, then it also makes sense to find a similar font and use the latter for printing.

You can compare fonts without even viewing them. To do this, select the font and click the “Similarity” button on the toolbar (with the letters AB). Or, from the menu, select the “View” command, and then “Group similar fonts.” A comment will appear next to the names of the fonts - “Similar”, “Very similar” and “Dissimilar”.

Font similarity properties are set by font developers. If they “didn’t get around to” the similarity parameters, then as a result of grouping the fonts it will be reported that “there is no data on similarity.”

How to hide variations of the same font in the fonts folder? You can remove variants of one font – italics, bold – out of sight. To do this, in the menu, click “View” – “Hide style options”.

Usually a tenth of the total font wealth is used. A beginner does not need such a number of fonts at all (except at first, for the sake of curiosity). When typing texts, they often use Times New Roman, Arial, Tahoma, Courier, Helvetica, and a couple more, to suit your taste.

What is the reason for the popularity of these fonts?

Firstly, these fonts are easy to read.

Secondly, they are understood by the majority text editors and printers. The risk of seeing a set of strange icons on the screen is less than when using beautiful but exotic fonts.

Third, if you write emails in ordinary, standard fonts, then the recipient of such a letter will always be able to read it. If you use an exotic font, then it is unlikely that another person will be able to read such a letter.

If you open a file whose text is typed using an exotic font, and there is no such font on your PC, then you will not be able to read anything. True, you can try selecting all the text and applying it to it standard font, for example, Time New Roman.

This program's arsenal includes functions for installing fonts, activating and deactivating them, creating databases, groups, searching for problems with fonts (which can help in some cases), working with names, and printing fonts. But sometimes this program cannot cope with some problems. Below I offer you a radical solution.

Besides the fact that the font file is installed in special folder on Windows, it is also registered in the registry. Accordingly, it is not enough to simply delete or add a font file to this very folder for the problem to disappear. Registered Windows fonts are stored here:

[Start/Run/regedit]
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts And also the font association key, which is also not unimportant:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontSubstitutes What is the solution? Download a “clean” set of fresh font installations for Windows 7:

or for Windows 8.1:

And also the registry file of font associations (the same for Win 7, 8.1):

Then we delete the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts key and install a new one in its place, with a “clean” set of fonts for the corresponding operating system (double-click on the registry file in the archive). Then delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontSubstitutes and install the same new file font associations from the archive. Then we reboot with boot disk, which has a file manager. For example with Acronis Boot CDUSB:

With help file manager We completely delete all fonts from the Windows/Fonts folder and copy new ones there from the corresponding archive (previously unpacked, of course). We reboot and... ta-da! We have full order in fonts. Next, we bring back carefully selected favorite fonts.

For rare readers of my blog, I have prepared a nice bonus. If you already have applications from Adobe or MS Office installed on your system, then their special fonts were already installed on the system. In order not to bother with reinstalling them, I offer you special archives with already installed fonts from Adobe CS6 + MS Office 2013 + a small personal collection of must-have fonts =) Happy creativity!

This article will show you how to add new fonts to the operating system. Of course, this is very simple, but at the same time, as in most Windows settings, available various ways and tricks.

First of all, it is necessary to dispel the misconception of many users who want to add a font, for example, to Word, Photoshop or Corel - the font is installed not in the program, but in the operating system and after that it becomes available in all applications.

Let's look at different ways to add new fonts

Method number 1. Easy installation

Go to the folder C:\Windows\Fonts\

After this, the installation process will begin. If some files already exist, the system will offer to replace or skip them.

Specifics of method No. 1

The entire font collection is stored in system folder. If for some reason operating system will be reinstalled, the collection will return to its original form.

Using this method causes duplication of files - in the Fonts folder and in the original location. This entails inappropriate use of disk space.

This method is suitable for replenishing a collection from an optical disc.

Method No. 2. Correct installation

If you want to add new set fonts located on your hard drive, it is better to execute the following sequence actions.

note: The principle of adding new fonts is different between Windows XP and 7.

On Windows XP

Open the folder “C:\Windows\Fonts\”. In it, click on the “Add/Load” button new font" After this, the Installation Wizard will launch and ask you to specify the location of the new fonts.

As a result of this installation, fonts will not be copied to the Fonts folder, but only shortcuts will be created that will link to real files.

On Windows 7

In "Seven" similar installation looks a little different than in XP.

Open the folder with new fonts

As you can see in the screenshot, when you click on a file in the pop-up menu, new item"Install". Click on it and the font will be added to the existing ones.

This method is very relevant in cases where you want to create a collection of several GB in size. This is explained by the fact that duplication of files and system clogging does not occur.

Healthy

Due to the fact that the list of fonts in the program is formed when it is loaded, after adding new ones you need to restart the application, and only then they will become available.

It makes no sense to install a set of fonts for several GB. Add to your collection only those that you plan to use.
