Equipment

Little things like the hardness and texture of the cardboard, the colors chosen, the fonts and the placement of the lettering combine to create a pleasant impression. And no wonder, a lot of attention is paid to such subtle aspects in premium products. Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is no exception.

In a couple of recesses at the bottom of the box there are adapters for connecting a MicroUSB cable and full-size flash drives. The compartment next to it contains a charger, a cable for it, as well as a headset with a fabric-braided wire (EO-IG955), ear pads for it, a set of four tips for a digital pen and tweezers for replacing them. The Eject pin “key” is neatly glued to the envelope with papers.

Appearance

The elongated body with smooth, graceful contours, despite its impressive dimensions, lies comfortably in the hand. In the color black diamond, the monoblock is completely glossy and shiny without exception. Thanks to the good grease-repellent coating of the body, this does not harm the appearance at all.

Even with not the most careful use, the Galaxy Note 8 does not lose its presentation. Unless small particles of dust get clogged into the joint between the glass and the frame of the smartphone. But these are trifles, especially since the IP68 protection class allows you to dip your smartphone into water without fear.

As for the layout of the controls, the on-screen keys are complemented by four mechanical ones: power buttons (on the right side of the device), a pair responsible for adjusting the sound, and a separate voice assistant button (on the left). All of them are shifted closer to the middle of the body and are located directly under the fingers.

The SIM card slot is located at the top end, where the noise reduction microphone is also located. The connectors are concentrated at the bottom - 3.5 mm jack and USB 3.1, on the right - a microphone hole, a ringing speaker and the top of the S Pen, which looks like a large button.

The most controversial design of the Galaxy Note 8 remains the decision to place the fingerprint and heart rate sensors on the rear panel, side by side with the camera unit. Whatever the company's engineers actually follow, it is perceived as a compromise. There is still a chance of the camera lens getting caught, although it is less than in the case of the Galaxy S8, where the sensor is located closer to the cameras.

The sensor area turned out to be quite high and it is not always convenient to use. True, among the many sensors at the top of the front panel there is an iris sensor, which can become its replacement. We almost forgot, there was also an LED notification indicator there. However, the need for it disappears; you should enable Always on Display.

Display

Samsung saves for its own Super smartphones AMOLED matrices last generation. They are characterized by a non-standard aspect ratio of 18.5 to 9, a resolution of 2960 x 1440 (Quad HD+), low power consumption, no frames, high brightness, wide color gamut and a reputation as the best offer on the market.

Moreover, the reputation is justified. There's nothing to criticize the Galaxy Note 8's screen for. Perhaps adjusting the backlight using PWM sometimes causes discomfort to the eyes of particularly sensitive users, but for AMOLED this standard technology.

Let's better talk about software capabilities. Samsung paid a lot of attention various parameters and screen operating modes.

The aforementioned Always on Display shows the clock and notifications on the locked screen. In this case, only active zones are highlighted. If other smartphones with similar functions have a black and white picture, the Galaxy Note 8 has a color screen. There are different styles available for the screen. Always on Display automatically turns on and off according to a schedule.

Using an RGB light sensor, the smartphone adjusts the image to the current lighting conditions. The menu allows you to select screen resolutions from HD+ and FHD+ to WQHD+. The last option, in our opinion, is intended mainly for glasses virtual reality. In everyday use, WQHD+ and FHD+ are indistinguishable by eye.

We’ll talk separately about how these modes affect the performance and autonomy of the smartphone. In addition, many small functions have been implemented, such as a blue light filter, video quality enhancement, one-handed operation mode and the ability to place two windows on the screen.

Iron

In Europe, the Galaxy Note 8 comes with Samsung development on board - an eight-core Exynos 9 processor, Mali GPU, 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory. Of this volume, a little more than 51 GB is available to the user. You can expand the storage using MicroSD memory cards up to 256 GB.

We ran all performance tests at the maximum screen resolution - WQHD+ - and consistently achieved flagship performance.

Perhaps the most demanding task that can be assigned to a smartphone - graphics processing in virtual reality - is handled by the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 without any problems. The chip is stable, does not overheat and will remain relevant for a very long time.

Software

Galaxy Note 8 runs a modified Android 7.1.1 operating system, called Samsung Experience 8.5.

Since the time of TouchWiz, not only the name of the graphical shell used in the company’s smartphones has changed. The software has gone through a long evolutionary path and now combines functionality with design, consistent in a single, laconic style.

As for the capabilities, the usual things are implemented here, such as notification management, a pop-up panel with applications and contacts by swiping, a built-in store with design themes, a simplified interface for children and the elderly, as well as branded ones, such as the Bixby voice assistant or the mode in which the screen will not lock while it is being looked at.

Stylus

The S Pen is hidden in the body of the smartphone. This accessory should not be neglected. Samsung tried to make the digital pen as practical as possible. For all those who can't part with their notepad, this is a chance to finally replace it with something more functional.

The smartphone understands when the S Pen is removed from it and offers to make a note on the locked screen.

The pen glides easily, is sensitive to pressure (2048 gradations are recognized) and works with a wet screen.

Pressing the button on the S Pen body causes radial menu, where you can add shortcuts to any applications, although, of course, those related to drawing are implied.

Pre-installed applications allow you to draw on screenshots, cut out areas of the screen, take handwritten notes with various effects, translate selected words and create hand-drawn GIF animations.

Connection

Needless to say, the flagship smartphone has latest developments in the field of wireless interfaces? For example, the list of supported LTE frequencies on the Galaxy Note 8 consists of 22 bands (Band) - a set that will work in any country in the world where there are 4G towers.

Bluetooth v5.0, ANT+ allow you to connect a wide range of accessories to the Galaxy Note 8, from headsets to sports sensors. NFC is useful for paying for goods using Samsung Pay– convenient technology for contactless payments, compatible with old payment terminals.

In addition, we tested USB 3.1 by transferring several movies to the smartphone via wire. The speeds correspond to those stated in the protocol.

Navigation starts instantly. Interestingly, the smartphone also recognizes satellites of the main orbital constellations - GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, and the relatively new European one - Galileo. The positioning accuracy is very high even in a city with its dense buildings.

The Galaxy Note 8 pays a lot of attention to sound. The company not only did not abandon the 3.5 mm jack, but also implemented a 9-band equalizer, virtual surround sound, and an adaptive mode that adjusts frequencies to the listener depending on his age. The included headset is quite suitable for everyday use, but the smartphone deserves the purchase of Hi-Fi headphones.

Battery

The included adapter supports fast charging and operates in modes (9V, 1.67A and 5V, 2A). The Galaxy Note 8 battery holds 3300 mAh. It will take 43 minutes to fill the battery halfway, and about an hour and a half to fill it completely. The smartphone supports Qi wireless charging, but it is noticeably slower.

Galaxy Note 8 turned out to be durable and coped with the traditional test perfectly.

The first test took place on standard method with Quad HD+ screen resolution. The result was 9 hours 30 minutes. With FHD+ resolution, battery life increased slightly, to 9 hours 45 minutes, and with HD+ resolution it was 10 hours 12 minutes, which is already more noticeable.

We also tested whether the power saving mode, which limits CPU performance and background network usage, provides additional benefits. It has battery life Galaxy work Note 8 was 9 hours 52 minutes - 17 minutes more than with a similar screen resolution.

The mode really saves energy, and the gains will be greater, since the editorial test of autonomy only approximately replicates real scenarios of using a smartphone. For check extreme mode It is not suitable for energy saving at all. In it, the smartphone also saves energy by enabling a dark theme.

Camera

There will be many nuances in this section of the review. First of all, assessing Galaxy cameras Note 8 needs to find out the sensor manufacturer using the service tag. It could be Samsung or Sony, and in one smartphone there may be matrices different brands. In our smartphone, all sensors are made by Samsung.

These are two 12 MP lenses, but with different viewing angles and apertures F1.7 and F2.4, and an 8 MP front camera. The advantages of the main cameras were: 2x optical zoom and optical stabilization of both sensors. Let's list autofocus as an advantage of the front camera.

It is possible to save frames in RAW, burst shooting, applying stickers and color filters, dynamic focus, HDR, video shooting in UHD quality, voice control. The interface is convenient and intuitive, but one flaw was still found.

By clicking on the circle to the right of the shutter button, you can usually view your latest photos, but on the Galaxy Note 8, screenshots and any other images also appear in the same menu.

Compared to the Galaxy S8, the quality of pictures has increased. It’s high time to officially announce the death of the amateur camera market. Flagship smartphones have long overtaken them and are now competing with each other. In this fight, Galaxy Note 8 shows itself as one of the leaders. A more precise determination can only be made through direct comparison.

No matter how much you study the nuances of color rendering and the behavior of post-processing algorithms in difficult conditions, one thing is important for the inexperienced user - the camera is excellent. Either the algorithms slightly embellish reality, or it’s the merit of the rich AMOLED screen, but the most banal landscapes shot on the Galaxy Note 8 become attractive, and without fussing with the settings.

The algorithms responsible for processing frames convey well the nuances of surface textures and even out the difference between dark and light areas of the frame. It is not always possible to achieve such a result with RAW post-processing, but here it is achieved by itself.

The only exceptions that are not always successful are pictures with a blurred background; the algorithms do not perfectly determine the areas to which the effect should be applied. The main trick here is to ensure that the subject in the frame is at least one and a half meters from the background.

Sometimes the software makes a mistake in selecting color correction in the dark and as a result the frame is very green.

As for the selfie camera, we note the detail of the background in the photo without a flash, accurate color rendition and preservation of nuances even in backlight.

Let's sum it up

Samsung has created an image device that emphasizes both the status of the owner and the leading position of the company. Using the Galaxy Note 8 is easy and pleasant, but writing about it is interesting and difficult. Not least because this smartphone contains all the company’s achievements, so much so that weak points, which we usually write down as cons at the end of the review, was not found.

But the demand for a high-end product is also high, so this time we’ll pay attention to points that could easily be forgiven for a cheaper device. Thus, the location of the fingerprint sensor is still unfortunate; not everyone will find it convenient to use. The combined SIM card slot forces you to choose between memory expansion and a second number, and unnatural colors appear in night photos.

We could include the high price in this series, but the Galaxy Note 8 is a true flagship smartphone, and we can only state that the price is justified.

Pros:

  • Curved Super AMOLED screen;
  • High performance;
  • Long battery life;
  • S Pen stylus;
  • Latest protocols wireless communication;
  • Image quality.
Minuses:
  • No significant ones were identified.
May not like:
  • Fingerprint sensor location;
  • PWM – adjust screen brightness.

It's time to get to know the best big smartphone this year! Yes, this is a teaser for the entire review, but I really think so, I’ll tell you now.

Video review of Samsung Galaxy Note 8

Technical characteristics of Samsung Galaxy Note 8:

  • Dimensions: 162.5 x 74.8 x 8.6 mm;
  • Weight: 195 g;
  • Operating system: Android 7.1.1 (Nougat);
  • Display: 6.3-inch, 2960×1440, Gorilla Glass 5;
  • Processor: Exynos 8895 or Snapdragon 835;
  • Video accelerator: Mali-G71 MP20 or Adreno 540;
  • RAM: 6GB;
  • ROM: 64/128/256 GB;
  • Main camera: dual, main module 12 MP, f 1.7, second module 12 MP, f 2.4, LED flash;
  • Front camera: 8 MP, f 1.7;
  • Battery: 3300 mAh;
  • Interfaces: 4G LTE, Wi-Fi (802.11 ac), Bluetooth 4.2 LE, GPS, NFC;
  • Other: USB Type-C (USB 3.1), fingerprint scanner, two SIM card slots.

But I’ll start with the cost, because this question is disturbing the entire Internet. Yes, a smartphone will cost $1,000 or more. And yes, that's a lot of money. And yes, many people don’t earn that much. And yes, for this money you can buy any other smartphone, or even several, and even a good laptop. Very good! Stop whining! This is a top-end smartphone and it contains all the best developments of the manufacturer. If you need it cheaper - there is always an alternative, J7, A7 and others. I am surprised by the comments, they say that for the price of Note 8 I will buy several (3-4) smartphones that will do the same thing, only a little worse. Yes, damn it, you pay more for uncompromising, it’s like that everywhere. Therefore, I propose not to return to the question of the cost of a smartphone for now.

Let's be honest, just six months ago the fate of the Note line was unknown, because we all know why. But last year I said that if Note 8 comes out, the main emphasis will be on quality and safety. Even a company like Samsung will not be able to afford such a story twice, it will be the end of the reputation. Therefore, Note 8 is perhaps the most secure smartphone on the market :)

Design and arrangement of elements

The design conceptually repeats that of the S8, which is logical, in my opinion. I don’t like it when a manufacturer is a complete mess in one generation. It's still the same borderless screen, as the company calls it, with GG5 glass on the front and back and a durable aluminum frame. If suddenly someone is worried about the glass in such a huge smartphone, just remember how Samsung was pinched for its plastic. Therefore, it is unlikely to return to it, and metal will not allow wireless charging. The iPhone will eventually become glass for precisely this reason.

But, in fairness, the smartphone does not try to hit the floor; holding it is surprisingly comfortable. Surprisingly - because I expected much worse, but nothing happened.

Many people believe that this line with endless screens is the coolest in appearance. Well, let's be honest, last year everyone wanted a front end without a shiny logo, and here you have it. Beauty!

The case is protected according to the IP68 standard, and special thanks for this. It seems that we shouldn’t have expected anything less, but it’s still nice that moisture and dust protection has become a standard for modern devices, it's practicality.

In terms of the arrangement of the elements, everything is the same as in the S8, so I won’t repeat it. The only thing is, I’ll point my fingers at the bottom edge again, everything is not symmetrical there again. But this doesn’t seem to bother anyone but me. And the scanner is still in the back. But here the placement is a little more convenient, because, unlike the S8, the scanner is separated from the camera by a strip with a flash.

Display

Super Amoled screen, 6.3”, which sounds like a mess, but in practice it’s not so bad. The fact is that, as in the S8, the aspect ratio is now 18.5 to 9, so the width of the smartphone is less than the 5.5” iPhone 7 Plus, especially considering the almost complete absence of edges. But in height - yes, it’s too big.

The edges are rounded, but not as much as in the S8, because the wow effect is not what is important in the first place, but normal operation with stylus. By the way, it was the same in Note 7. In terms of ease of use, this is displayed well, I would generally like a flat screen, just with 2.5d glass.

Resolution 2960x1440 pixels, pixel density 522 per inch. It sounds very cool, but for some unknown reason I can see ladders of pixels on the fonts. Most likely, this is not a minus of the display, but a plus of my eyes. The picture is gorgeous, which is already customary for the latest Samsung smartphones, everything is clear, contrasty, and if desired, the “toxicity” of the amold can be tamed a little in the screen settings by selecting one of the presets. Protective glass Gorilla Glass 5. It is durable, but, from experience, it will not protect from scratches, although I don’t have them yet, or from breaking. Therefore, I recommend using a smartphone in a case; it’s cool that there is a good selection of original accessories.

Cameras

I'll just share my impressions. As you know, this is the first smartphone with optical stabilization not only on the main camera, but also on the second one – the portrait camera. And the result was not just for show, but very visible and cool. Here, with a portrait lens, you can not only take photos without blur, even in relatively poor conditions or on the go (taking iPhone 7 Plus with a second camera on the go is generally contraindicated), but also the videos turn out good. And this is already worth a lot - full-fledged 4K at 52 mm with an optical stub. Although, to be fair, the video quality is much inferior to that of the iPhone, here it looks cheap, and the stabilization adds jelly. You won’t be able to use such videos for serious purposes, but the Note 8 probably takes photographs better than anyone else.

Speaking of low light, the Note 8, like others, starts using the main camera even when you turn on zoom. Because the aperture there is better and the matrix is larger, the stub does not compensate for all the problems. I'm glad that the camera module does not protrude from the body at all and, on the contrary, is protected by a small edge, which prevents scratches on the protective glass.

Video examples

The camera app is the same as the S8, except for the addition of two new features: switching to a second lens and dynamic focus. We've sorted out the first one, and the second one is the local portrait mode. But it’s more sophisticated, since it allows you to change the degree of blur, both before taking the picture and after. However, the algorithm itself still works poorly; in photographs from big amount artifacts remain. I hope it's here neural networks are also involved and the quality will improve.

Sound

The smartphone does not stand out among others flagship models quality, but sounds decent. I listened with AKG headphones and the quality was quite enough for me. The volume reserve is also sufficient.

And here external speaker got me upset. It is very ordinary: there is no special density, no second speaker. And here I would like not only two cameras, but also two speakers, because even Xiaomi did this.

Performance

In principle, we can’t talk about performance in normal flagships that are not Helio p25. They are all good! So here, in the version for our markets there will be a version with an Exynos 8895 processor, made using a 10 nm process technology. Like the Snapdragon 835, which will also be available in some versions, but in the main part of the world it will be Exynos that will be sold. Graphics in the version with Exynos – Mali-G71.

6 GB of RAM is good, this is another plus in favor of the Note if a person needs the maximum of everything. In synthetic tests, the results do not interest us much, but in games, yes. For me, the best benchmark is WoT Blitz. Everything was fine and 60 fps were shown everywhere, until I set the original resolution in the smartphone itself, and not FullHD, and also until I selected the most maximum settings graphics in the game. And in difficult scenes, keep it at 20-25 fps, it’s very difficult to play. At the same time, the heating of the smartphone is minimal. Perhaps it is precisely to reduce heating that the smartphone itself lowers the processor frequency, I don’t know.

Battery capacity 3300 mAh. This is not very much, considering that the S8+ has a battery capacity of 3500, with the same type of display, 10 nm processor, and so on. Obviously, they did everything to make the smartphone reliable and put security much higher than capabilities. A miracle did not happen, the smartphone lasts less than the S8+, on average you can expect from 3 to 4 hours of screen operation.

But even this is basically enough for me. I take my smartphone off the charger at 6.40 in the morning, watch a couple of videos on YouTube at breakfast, read Twitter and email, listen to music on BT in the car on the way to work, and first thing in the office I shoot down stars in Clash of Clans, which takes half an hour. I take about 20 photos a day and call for 15-20 minutes. By evening there is still 35-40 percent charge left.

The smartphone is not huge, but it lasts for a day, which will be enough for most. It is clear that on a trip, when you need to use cards in another city, you will need to carry a power bank with you, which will not be very convenient, given the size of the smartphone.

S Pen

Physically, the S-pen stylus has become better: a pen with a tip thickness of 0.7 mm, 4096 degrees of pressure, improved tilt detection. By the way, yes, you cannot insert the stylus with the back side. But the most important thing is that now they can work underwater!

The software also has new features, for example, you can make a GIF, the translation has been improved, but overall, it’s still the same best smartphone organizer in the world.

You can think of many uses for the stylus; I once planned an apartment using the Note 4, because it’s convenient and always at hand. Therefore, I will use it in Note 8, especially since I have a new renovation coming soon :)

BY

But I’ll kick you again for the software. For two years I praised Samsung because they made their shell much more pleasant and without a ton unnecessary trash. I didn't say it was perfect, I said it was much better. And this does not mean that you have to stop working. Friends, well, with localization, when a word is not transferred into syllables, it’s a shame. The Android version is 7.1.1, but I’m glad that an update to Oreo should appear before the end of autumn. Visible changes not much, for example, the dock can be hidden completely, for this there is a small dot on the left. In order to get it, you need to swipe from below. And, unlike the S8, there is a software package for working with the stylus, which is logical.

These are my impressions about new Samsung Galaxy Note 8. As I said, on this moment I consider it the best large smartphone (I just can’t call it a smartphone; due to its size, it’s clearly not suitable for everyone). He is huge, expensive and uncompromising, I hope he succeeds this year!

If you find an error, please highlight a piece of text and click Ctrl+Enter.

The main feature of the new Note 8, forgive me fans of the S pen stylus, is the dual camera. Under each of the rear camera lenses there are 12 megapixel sensors. The main lens is wide-angle, with a focal length of 26 mm (equivalent) and f/1.7 aperture.

The second lens is used for portrait shots and shooting with 2x optical zoom. In this sense, Samsung went along Apple ways. The focal length of the zoom lens is 52 mm (equivalent) and the aperture is f/2.4. And most importantly, both cameras have optical image stabilization. It helps when shooting in twilight and darkness, as well as when recording videos: when switching between two lenses, shaking and judder are almost unnoticeable. The camera unit has phase-phase autofocus with support for DualPixel technology, and there is also a single LED flash. Permission front camera 8 megapixels, and the lens aperture is f/1.7.

Phototest

We conducted a full photo test of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 in different conditions and noted the highest quality of work and versatility of the smartphone as a handy camera. During the day and indoors, the dual camera demonstrates its best qualities: high image quality, excellent color rendition, accurate white balance. However, there was a fly in the ointment. When shooting in automatic mode, you can notice strong oversharpening at the edges of objects and post-processing flaws. This is, one might say, branded Samsung trait in auto mode, which many people don’t like.

Our Internet project has at its disposal a new premium smartphone from Samsung- Galaxy Note 8. In technical terms, the new product is an organic continuation flagship Samsung Galaxy S8. Among the differences are the screen diagonal increased to 6.3 inches, the function of drawing using the S Pen stylus supplied in the kit, a dual camera, 6 GB of RAM, and a more austere appearance. At the start of sales, the price of the device is the same as powerful laptop- from 69,990 rubles. Is the Note 8 capable of becoming a full-fledged computer replacement, and is it that good?

The story of spontaneously combusting Note 7 batteries last year did not stop the Korean company's plans to develop a line of ultra-large smartphones. Painstaking work was carried out and now Samsung has assured that there will be no problems with the new Note 8 model. 146% guarantee!

The new product itself turned out to be extremely interesting and rich in functionality. Samsung Galaxy Note 8 has a strict appearance, and the glass and metal body has IP68 protection against dust and water. If we take average data with a mixed mode of use, we get two days of battery life. Those who use only calls can easily count on 4 days of work. In terms of autonomy, the device differs for the better from the vast majority of Android smartphones.

The device has several energy saving modes. Some of them limit the brightness of the screen backlight and processor frequency. In this scenario, the operating time will increase by at least 20%. There is an extreme (maximum) energy saving mode. In this case, the screen displays only white and gray colors, all applications except telephone communication, SMS, calendar and alarms are disabled.

The phone has a fast charging feature. The battery is fully charged in 1 hour 5 minutes. There is also built-in wireless charging.

User Interface and Operating System

id="sub7">

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 comes pre-installed with Android 7.1.1 Nougat operating system and Clean UI.

Smartphone owners have access to everything branded programs Samsung, including S Health for monitoring physical activity and health, voice Bixby assistant, gesture support, KNOX - for separating data into personal and work, etc. Missing programs can be downloaded from Samsung App Store and Google Play. The model supports the Samsung Pay service.

The smartphone contains gesture control functions and S Pen drawing capabilities that can make it easier and more convenient everyday use. So, there is support for one-handed control and gestures.

The Smart Capture feature allows you to take a screenshot even hidden areas screen, which is useful when you need to capture an entire web page or when the text doesn't fit on one screen.

Using the Game Launcher and Game Tools applications, you can disable touch control buttons during the game, which will prevent accidental clicks, quickly respond to a message without minimizing the game, or completely block any notifications.

S Pen stylus

id="sub8">

As I noted just above, the S Pen is located at the bottom of the Galaxy Note 8. It has a thinner tip, improved pressure sensitivity, and new features and functions. Here are some of them.

The Animated Messages feature lets you share animated texts or pictures with friends using different platforms, which support animated GIFs.

On-Screen Notepad allows you to store up to 100 pages of notes on your phone, which you can take immediately after removing the S Pen, pin notes to when the screen is off, and easily edit them later.

There is also an improved translation feature using the S Pen. It allows you to quickly translate not only individual words, but also entire sentences in 71 languages, as well as convert foreign currencies and units of measurement. To do this, just point the electronic pen at the desired word on the smartphone screen.

Bixby voice assistant

id="sub9">

S Voice has become Bixby. Samsung fully believes that its development will become something similar to Siri, Cortana or Google Assistant. In addition to standard recognition of voice commands, Bixby looks at the context in which the request is pronounced, that is, user behavior; the application that is open at this moment; location, etc. In fact, Bixby works with Big Data, which your smartphone accumulates.

Bye current functions Bixby cannot be called intelligent. The prediction system works correctly only in every second case. To train it, you need millions of people to start using Bixby; in such systems it doesn’t happen otherwise - the more they use it, the better they become.

According to analysts, a full-fledged version of Bixby with voice commands, tips and other things will be released only in December 2017, along with updating the device to Android 8. So we are waiting.

Camera. Photo and video capabilities

id="sub10">

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 has a dual main camera. These are two sensors of 12 megapixels each. One of them is a 1/2.55” matrix with a wide-angle lens (f/1.7), the second is a 1/3.6” telephoto (f/2.4), and it is this that provides double optical zoom. There is phase detection autofocus and optical image stabilization. Thanks to the increased system performance and the fact that the camera module received its own memory, a comfortable Burst Mode appeared. This mode allows you to take several dozen pictures in a row. In addition, the camera focuses on objects faster.

The camera takes slightly better quality pictures in difficult lighting conditions. In the settings you can find additional shooting modes, including PRO. Otherwise, improvements in camera performance are not so significant compared to its predecessors.

The camera interface is made in the traditional Samsung style. There are many settings and preset modes, including self-portrait, panorama, night, continuous shooting, HDR and GIF creation. Video capabilities allow shooting in 4K. In FullHD you can choose a frame rate of 60 or 30 frames per second. There is optical stabilization.

IN manual mode ISO settings available in 50, 100, 200, 400, 800. The following shooting modes are available: single shot, smile detection, continuous, panorama, vintage, portrait, landscape, night mode, sports, indoor, beach/snow, sunset, dawn , autumn colors, fireworks, text, twilight, against the light.

The front camera has a resolution of 8 megapixels. It is quite photosensitive (f/1.7), has a 1/3.6” matrix, and has autofocus. When taking a selfie, you can adjust your skin tone, face shape, and eye size. There is also a panoramic selfie function, although the optics are already wide-angle - you can capture a small company without special modes.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is a prime example of a very interesting premium device. It is clear that very wealthy people can afford it. The device is addressed primarily to creative and business audiences. For the former, the opportunity to draw on the screen of the device, as well as take photographs and shoot videos of the device itself, will come in handy. High Quality. The dual main camera here is very good. For the latter, a smartphone is suitable for working outside a stationary workplace. The function of multiple windows in different applications is conveniently implemented here, the ability to take some notes using the S Pen stylus, as well as very respectable battery life even under extreme load.

The advantages of the device include the gorgeous 6.3-inch screen, which occupies almost the entire front part. In addition, the device has high-performance hardware with a large amount of RAM and built-in memory. The user interface flies, heavy games and the video works without lag. There is a mode for working with VR helmets and augmented reality programs.

I would also note the IP68 protection against dust and water. This allows the smartphone to be at a depth of up to 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes. This, of course, does not mean that the phone can be washed under water, much less tested for water resistance in a washing machine. But if you drop it in water, nothing will happen to it. Convenient features include facial recognition, iris scanner, gesture control, dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC, Samsung Pay.

By default, users have access to the S Health application to monitor their physical activity, and KNOXX to create a protected data area. The main camera was also at a high level.
Among the disadvantages is the risk of breaking your smartphone from the first fall on asphalt or stones. But in most cases, the screen tolerates falls without consequences. Much more critical was the transfer of the fingerprint scanner to the back panel of the smartphone. Because of this, using Samsung Pay has become unusual. Another disadvantage is the memory card slot combined with one of the SIM cards.

Regarding potential Samsung's competitors Galaxy Note 8, then only the iPhone 8 Plus comes to mind. Both devices have comparable camera quality and performance. However, Note 8 looks more interesting in terms of appearance and various technical features. The Samsung device is more versatile. You don’t need to buy accessories costing 7-9 thousand rubles for wireless charging or listening to music at home.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 or S8+ - what to choose?

Note 8 and S8 plus are almost identical, if you are only interested in what to choose and whether it makes sense to overpay 20,000 rubles for Note 8, then we will not drag our feet and answer your question right away - most likely not. But, there are nuances :) So, why does Samsung want an additional 20 thousand? There will be some spoilers ahead, so be forewarned. 1. S-Pen stylus Actually, not a single smartphone now has a stylus. Its advantages are not so obvious and not many people understand why it is needed at all. If you are among them and the stylus itself is not interesting to you, then you are unlikely to use it. You can either use the stylus or not - there is no middle ground. I have friends who have been using Note line smartphones for a long time and they can’t imagine how it’s possible without a stylus? But at the same time, there are friends who have never used a stylus, and one of them was not even aware that he had one. In general, if you have not used a stylus before, you do not know what to do with it, then it is unlikely to be of use to you. On the contrary, there is no point in telling people who love styluses about its advantages. 2. Screen You understand, it’s funny here - 6.3 inches and 6.2 inches. The screens are identical. 3. Dual camera I believe this is the only really noticeable benefit. The main module and front camera are the same as the S8/S8+, but a second camera has appeared with a set of really interesting functions.

Should you buy Note 8 instead of S8+?

Personally, I think there is no point. If you were going to buy the S8+, then buy it. By the way, its battery is slightly more powerful: 3500 mAh in the S8+, versus 3200 in the Note 8.

Appearance and design

The Galaxy Note 8 is a 6.3-inch smartphone, which means you should expect to see the device in front of you large sizes. However, for such a large screen the dimensions of the device are quite acceptable. Holding the smartphone in one hand is comfortable, since the width of the device is very similar to a classic 5.2-inch smartphone. Note 8, however, is noticeably longer, so the top of the screen is almost impossible to reach with the thumb of the hand in which the smartphone is lying. Below you can compare how the Galaxy Note 8 stacks up against the 5.2-inch Moto G5 Plus and the 4.7-inch Galaxy A3 (2017). The thickness and weight are a little more than the Galaxy S8, but still ok. The smartphone is 8.6 mm thick and weighs 195 grams. In the image of the company's current top devices, the Galaxy Note 8 has a glass back panel, which, like the screen, has a slight curvature at the edges. True, this curvature is more moderate than in the Galaxy S8. So the design looks a little more angular, but that's not necessarily a negative. Between the two glass parts, which are protected by Gorilla Glass 5, there is a metal frame that is clearly distinguishable from glass when touched. As you might expect, the glass back of the model is again a fingerprint magnet, which is one of the downsides. As a plus, however, we will include a waterproof case with an IP68 certificate, which allows you to immerse your smartphone to a depth of up to one and a half meters for 30 minutes.
From the front, the smartphone looks quite attractive, mainly thanks to the two curved sides that make the side bezels almost invisible. There is very little space under and above the screen. For example, there is no physical Home button. As in the Galaxy S8, the Note 8 has three touch buttons on the screen, while the main button recognizes pressure, and pressing is accompanied by a slight vibration. The idea behind this approach is that even if the touch buttons are hidden during gameplay, pressing the Home button will instantly take you to main screen. Clicking on it can also unlock the device. In a small area above the screen there is a front camera, a speaker, an LED notification indicator, proximity sensors, light sensors and iris recognition.

At the rear, the dual camera is what attracts the most attention. Next to the camera is an LED flash and a heart rate sensor. There is also a fingerprint scanner, and it is also located next to the dual camera. A little lower Samsung inscription, and even lower you will see the model name, markings and other inscriptions.

As with the Galaxy S8, the Note 8 has a Bixby button located just below the volume buttons. At first, you might confuse it with the power button, which is on the other side, as it looks exactly the same. At the bottom there is a headphone jack, a USB Type-C charging port, a built-in microphone, a speaker and an S Pen, which can be easily pulled out and put back in without the risk of it accidentally falling out. Above are slots for Nano-SIM cards and microSD cards. There you will also find a second built-in microphone.

Screen

The Galaxy Note 8 display again offers a 1440 x 2960 pixel resolution, the same as the Galaxy S8 introduced earlier this year. Here, however, we already have a 6.3-inch display, which gives a pixel density of 521ppi. This is, of course, a very, very detailed picture. The matrix is Super AMOLED, so the colors will be rich and contrasting. In settings you can set more low resolution, which should have a positive effect on battery life.

Screen Modes

Super AMOLED displays have a wide color range. While many screens don't have the full sRGB color gamut, the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 has screen modes that allow the user to select multiple color spaces, which exactly overlap sRGB. This raises the quality of the screen and its color reproduction to completely unattainable levels. Moreover, like the S8/S8+, it has a very funny effect - everything you shoot with a smartphone camera on its screen looks simply incredible, everything is very bright and saturated, you just can’t get enough of it. But if you transfer photos to a computer or another phone, the quality of the photos suddenly deteriorates. I find this funny and further proof of how good the screens are. top smartphones Samsung, some people manage to complain about this.

Blue light filter

After sunset, when the biological clock prepares our body for sleep, blue light with a wavelength of about 440 nm leads to hormonal imbalance, which leads to a number of negative effects. In the display settings menu you will find a blue light filter that extends to the screen settings, limiting it, especially in dark hours day. This will reduce eye fatigue. You can also adjust the filter's activity level and set the time for it to run. automatic switching on and shutdown. If you turn on GPS, your smartphone will know when sunset and sunrise occur in your area, so it can activate the filter during these periods.

Main screen

This submenu has several different options, for example you can choose whether you will have internal menu or all available icons can be located on the main screen. You can also choose how many rows and columns the application icon tile will have, as well as whether there will be a separate button. Finally, you can hide certain apps.

Easy mode

We have previously seen this mode in Samsung models, but this time it has been moved to the display menu. By selecting Simple mode, you will increase the size of all applications and icons, so the home page will therefore contain fewer of them. You can choose in advance which applications you want to quickly access. Faster and more convenient access to your favorite contacts will also be on one of your home screens.

Navigation bar

You can customize the color of the bottom panel with touch buttons, swap the back buttons and the button for showing open applications. You can also unlock the phone by pressing the Home button harder, and you can adjust the pressing force at which the unlocking will be triggered.

Edge screen

Here you will see two options that you can turn on and off. The first configures what information is displayed on the side of the screen when panned from right to left. You can choose a panel that includes frequently used apps, favorite contacts, weather, sports scores and more. Another functionality of this Edge screen is as an indicator light for various notifications. Of course, you can specify notifications from which applications will be shown there.
Display settings also have several other functions, such as preventing accidental taps on the screen when it is in your pocket, changing the appearance of icons, adjusting brightness, font, and much more. You can even choose what resolution the screen will have and which apps can be displayed in full screen.

S-Pen stylus

Galaxy Note smartphones are the only smartphones that have a stylus - S-Pen. And this stylus can be called unsurpassed. I know several people who are so used to it series that they cannot imagine changing their smartphone to anything else - precisely thanks to the advanced features of the S Pen. But let's start with the stylus itself, which, as usual, is hidden in a special niche located in the lower right corner of the smartphone. This is possible thanks to the clickable part of the stylus - it is responsible for pushing the S Pen out of the slot. The stylus also has a button that presses and holds a note twice on the screen - also on the screen.

Battery

Just a few weeks before the launch of the Galaxy Note 8, many expressed their dissatisfaction with the fact that the smartphone will only have a 3,300 mAh battery. This, with a really large high-resolution display and advanced features, didn't look very good and didn't bode well. Dry numbers indicate that the battery capacity has decreased to 3300 mAh, and the screen resolution has increased. If you use the phone mainly with Wi-Fi, it will work for about 6 hours with the screen on. If you switch to mobile data transmission and use only LTE and Bluetooth, the time of continuous operation with the screen on will decrease to 3.5-4.5 hours, depending on the brightness of the screen. This is far from the most top scores, but considering that in most cases the Galaxy Note 8 can last until the end of the working day on one charge, they are quite acceptable. And you need to remember that the Galaxy Note 8 has wireless charging, so you can charge it immediately when you come to the office or home, without reaching for a cable. As already mentioned, the smartphone apparently supports fast loading, and the whole process itself takes about 1.5 hours. In everyday work, fast charging has helped me out more than once. Even 15 minutes of charging gives you at least a couple of hours of extra work.

Settings and power saving modes

There are two modes in the battery menu that can limit battery consumption. The first "moderate power saving mode" makes a few minor restrictions, which slightly increases battery life. However, more interesting is the second one, which is called maximum mode energy saving. It limits the maximum screen brightness, mobile chip performance, and mobile data. Only basic applications and settings are available. You can also find out the approximate operating time in this mode. The menu also contains information about the consumption of different applications over different periods of time.

Software

The Galaxy Note 8 runs Android 7.1 Nougat, and you can be sure that it will be one of the first models to receive the update to the next version of Android when it becomes available. Of course, the smartphone has the latest version of the user Samsung interface, which we saw in the Galaxy S8. Overall everything is good.

Bixby

Bixby is another new product that appeared during the announcement of the Galaxy S8. This is new virtual assistant, which even has its own physical button. It can be called by voice (holding the button), text or touch. You can even capture an object with your camera, then Bixby will start searching for it. Bixby looks up how much it costs and where to buy it, gives information about different attractions and places you can visit, identifies QR codes, etc. In addition to pressing the button, Bixby can be brought up by swiping right on the home screen. It finds information about everything you need - the latest news, upcoming assignments, weather forecasts, diaries and everything else.

Retinal scanner

In addition to the usual fingerprint sensor, one of the latest and most interesting thing, which came with the Galaxy S8, had a retinal scanner, which is also available in the Galaxy Note 8. It detects your eyes quickly, but in my opinion there are many nuances that make the fingerprint sensor much more useful. In order for your eyes to be scanned, you must hold the device against your eyes at a certain distance. Additionally, unlocking will not work if you wear contacts or glasses. But anyway it's real interesting way unlocking a smartphone, which you can show off to your friends a couple of times.

Performance

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 comes in two versions if we're talking about about the mobile processor. In the US and China, the model comes with the Snapdragon 835, while in Europe it comes with the Exynos 8895, which we used in our tests. The Exynos 8895 has eight cores, the first four - Exynos M1 - clocked at up to 2.3 GHz, and the second with Cortex-A53 architecture and up to 1.7 GHz. Samsung has improved the architecture of its Exynos M1 cores, increasing power and reducing power consumption. The Exynos 8895 is the first processor to be built on a 10nm FinFET process, making the Galaxy Note 8 even faster, reducing power consumption by 40% and increasing performance by 27% compared to its 14nm predecessor. The chip supports LTE Cat 16 communications, providing download speeds of up to 150 Mbps. Chip support also includes 28MP front and rear cameras, a 4K screen, and 4K video recording at 120fps. Thanks to its dual image processors, the Exynos 8895 also supports dual cameras. The mobile chip also has a new graphics chip Mali-G71, which with 20 cores provides 60% higher performance than its predecessor. Samsung also says the chip will stay cool even after heavy load, and power consumption is significantly reduced. More detailed information about Exynos 8895 can be found on the official website: http://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/Exynos/w/solution/mod_ap/8895/ Galaxy Note 8 has 6 GB of RAM.

Temperature

Along with performance, we always measure how hot the device under test gets after prolonged use. In this case, the upload was shooting 4K video, which is one of the most difficult operations for a smartphone. 4K videos are limited to 10 minutes, so immediately after the video ends we will check the maximum temperature in three different areas on the back of the model.

Galaxy Note 8 camera

The Galaxy Note 8's camera is one of the major upgrades over the S8. It is implemented according to the already popular “dual-camera” scheme for smartphones, including a second wide-angle one, which has a 2x optical zoom. Zoom can be activated using a small button and may not be available depending on conditions. This happens when software camera decides that under these conditions you are better off using the main camera. In addition to optical zoom, the second camera can also create a bokeh effect. This is a Live Focus feature that allows you to adjust the background blur both during and after shooting. In any case, both sensors have a resolution of 12 megapixels, dual LED flash, the main camera has an f/1.7 aperture (exactly the same camera in the Galaxy S8/Galaxy S8 Plus), and the second has an f/2.4 aperture. Another difference is that the main camera boasts ultra-fast dual pixel autofocus. Both cameras have optical image stabilization, which is a first for us in a dual-camera smartphone. Most importantly, the photos of the Galaxy Note 8 are really cool and fully comparable to the flagship level. The smartphone does high-quality photographs even in low light conditions, thanks in particular to fast autofocus and optical image stabilization. The front camera has a resolution of 8 megapixels and an f/1.7 aperture. There's also Intelligent Autofocus, which tracks faces to ensure everyone in the photo is in focus. The front camera settings have several shooting modes, including widescreen, which allows you to take photos with a large number of people, and selective focus mode, in which you determine which object in the photo should be in focus. Of course, there are also various effects, filters, stickers, etc.

Camera menus and functions

The camera menu is practically no different from the Galaxy S8. This is called through the slide on the right includes several modes. Professional mode gives you access to various settings such as shutter speed, exposure, ISO, white balance and more. There is also a panorama, different video speeds and even a “Food” mode that makes photos more appetizing. Swiping left gives you access to a variety of filters that will make your photo more impressive. There are also various stickers available here.

Slow-mo

Conclusion

Samsung's Note line fell into disrepute after the fiasco with its latest representative. The Galaxy Note 8 seems to be almost perfect, but you will have to shell out a considerable amount of money for it. Either way, it will amaze you with its appearance, including the curved glass on both sides, both front and back. There is also a fingerprint scanner, heart rate sensor and retina sensor, which appeared in the Galaxy S8. The display has increased to 6.3 inches. This screen size is more typical of small tablets than a smartphone, but thanks to minimal side frames dimensions are within reasonable limits. Let's not forget the S Pen, which brings additional functionality not available to other smartphones. The Exynos 8895 mobile processor is also the best Samsung has to offer, paired with 6GB of RAM for excellent performance. In addition to high performance The chip heats up relatively little after prolonged use. Last but not least, the camera module has received an update, which now includes two 12MP sensors with optical image stabilization. The photos taken with it are really cool.

Pros of Samsung Galaxy Note 8

  • Waterproof (IP68) and heart rate, fingerprint and retina sensors
  • Design improvements - curved display and minimal bezels around it
  • S Pen with various handwriting options
  • Super AMOLED display with QHD resolution, high brightness and contrast and accurate colors
  • Android interface 7.1 New + TouchWiz
  • Powerful mobile processor Exynos 8895 with graphics card Mali-G71 and RAM 6 GB
  • Adequate case temperature after prolonged use
  • Dual 12-megapixel rear camera with optical stabilization, more modes and manual settings

Disadvantages of Samsung Galaxy Note 8

  • The case is a fingerprint magnet
  • The most expensive Galaxy Note model
