About reading books on the computer.

I belong to that group of people who like to spend time reading an interesting book. Sometimes you have to meet similar people, but when I tell someone that I most often read books on a computer, I usually hear that it’s not convenient, that it’s much more pleasant to read regular books, etc. And to some extent I myself agreed , that reading regular books is more convenient and enjoyable, but at the same time, I did not experience any particular inconvenience when reading books on a computer. And recently, while reading a regular book, I discovered that in fact it is even more convenient for me to read on a computer than a “paper source”. Later in the article I will write how I read and why reading on the computer has become more preferable for me.

Advantages of a computer

    Thanks to the computer and the Internet, you have Free access To a huge number books right at home. After all, not everyone has a large home library or can afford to buy a large number of books. And you don’t always have the time or desire to go to the library.

    Personally, I like to read books with a mug of hot tea and cookies or something else to eat. But, as a rule, when reading an ordinary book, you need to hold it with your hands, since many books, especially new ones, have the ability to close or simply turn over. The computer is much more convenient in this regard, because I have both hands free and only periodically I press the button to flip to another page. Now I can enjoy both a book and tea.

    Many people now have permanent access on the Internet, which gives another advantage.

    You can often find unfamiliar words in the text, and when I come across such words, I don’t have to go, take a dictionary and look up this word - I just open Google and immediately find its meaning. Often in books you come across some beautiful sayings that you would like to have on hand. I have a special one for these purposes text file

, where I add quotes I like. And for this, again, I don’t have to go, take a notebook and pen and write out this sentence - I just open a text file and copy it there.

How do I read I’ll say right away that I don’t read books in programs such as Microsoft Word , Adobe Acrobat Reader, Notebook

etc., because I find it very inconvenient. I tried a number of programs and I think the most convenient is a program called AlReader (official website: http://alreader.kms.ru/).

This is what my computer monitor looks like when I run this program:

    The program has a fairly wide range of functions, which you can read about on the official website. I will only name the features that I personally like: The program is very pleasing to the eye: it has large font

    and looks like an ordinary book.

    AlReader itself remembers the place where you stopped.

That is, the next time you launch the program, it immediately opens the book at the place where you finished reading. Below are only the most necessary things: hours and reading progress (indicated in percentage and number of pages). Program AlReader free for personal use. IN currently On the official website you can download the version for Windows, different mobile platforms.

and PDA. According to the author of the program, he is now working on a version for Android On my own behalf I will add that on Linux systems The program starts without any problems using Wine(I use it this way myself). There is no need to install the program, just download it from the archive from the official website, unpack it and run it

AlReader settings

In order for your program to look like mine in the screenshots, you need to do the following:

Click right click mice in the program window and select “Settings” → “Main”→ put a tick "Start in full screen". Then again “Settings” → “Status Bar”→ put a tick "Full screen". You can leave it at this, although you can experiment with other settings if you wish.

If in Linux If you have problems displaying fonts (in the main text or in footnotes), then you can try to select other fonts by opening the items "Profile""Font". The main text was always displayed normally for me, but for footnotes one day I had to change the font. For this purpose in “Profile” → “Font” in the drop-down list you need to select "Monospace font" and try installing different fonts.

Opening the book is quite simple. For this right click in the program window and select "Open file". Next, we simply indicate the place where our book is located, select it and click "Open". Below are only the most necessary things: hours and reading progress (indicated in percentage and number of pages). supports the following file formats: TXT, RTF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, HTML, FB2, EPUB, SXW, ABW, ZABW, PDB/PRC, TCR, CHM, as well as reading from archives ZIP and GZ.

For those who use office suites such as LibreOffice , OpenOffice and similar ones, I will give one small tip: when you download a book in a format like DOC or RTF, save it with this office suite to format ODT, which is their default format. It is better to do this because this format is free and it is better supported by the program Below are only the most necessary things: hours and reading progress (indicated in percentage and number of pages).: Always displays pictures and footnotes in the text that DOC And RTF may not have been displayed. In addition, books in the format ODT take up significantly less space on your computer than the same books in DOC or RTF. Most of the books on my computer are saved in the format ODT.

In conclusion, I will add that my grandmother is a great lover of books, and has read a lot of them throughout her life. Of course, she read regular books, but one day she asked me if I could find some books online that she wanted to read but couldn't find. I found these books, and also installed and configured the program for my grandmother AlReader. And she, having read regular books all her life, started reading from the computer without any problems, and although she had never sat at a computer, this method did not seem inconvenient to her. Therefore, it is a little strange for me to hear statements from young people who clearly have not read as much as my grandmother, that they are supposedly such aesthetes and connoisseurs of books that they definitely need a paper version (sorry if I hurt anyone’s feelings).

I hope you found the article useful. Although you may have already found your own way of reading on a computer, which is more convenient for you. In this case, I do not insist on anything, read as you wish, and I am writing for those who have not yet seen all the benefits of such reading.

At a time when phones were two or even three times thicker. When a 3.5" screen was huge, and VGA resolution was considered even too high. When you pressed whatever you wanted on the screen, and when it was cold you didn’t have to take off your gloves or use your nose. When a single-core processor with 600 MHz was a monster, and cards were SD size. And the headphone jack was anything other than the standard 3.5” And we charged the whole thing via miniUSB or some kind of mega original connector... In those days we didn’t post statuses on social networks and didn’t wait for the car to be repaired in real racing, so all that All we had to do was read it - and we read it in AlReader

That's exactly how things are. During the days of Palm and Windows Mobile people used PDAs more as e-readers, I think that this was one of the most common ways to dispose of purchased items.

In 2005, when I purchased my first PDA, I started by looking for a reading program, but at that moment the best was Haali Reader, but then AlReader appeared like a jack-in-the-box, which began to actively attract the audience. The reasons for such a migration were quite justified: wider support for formats, extensive settings, and most importantly, an author who actively argued with users on the forum, but nevertheless or later introduced more functions requested by users.

And then came the era of Android, communicators under Windows control Mobile quickly turned into an unnecessary rarity, and with them AlReader was left behind. An active movement has begun on 4pda to raise funds for the author of AlReader, Alan, to purchase an Android smartphone. We bought the device, but we received the ported version almost a year later.

People are greeted by their clothes, and this part of the saying is true in the world of apps even more than in the real world. And here AlReader looks far from ideal.

When we first launch it, we see a short description from the author, with information about what kind of application it is and under what conditions it is distributed.

On the one hand, we are immediately shown the capabilities of the program:

  • presence of header and footer;
  • the ability to display pictures, even in one line with text;
  • drop cap support;
  • status bar with extended information (time, battery charge, percentage of read);
  • background with texture;
  • clock in the background (pale green).

At the top there is a toolbar:

  • open file;
  • a pop-up menu with a list of actions for a given book (contents, flipping, bookmarks, etc.);
  • switching profiles;
  • pop-up menu of reading preferences (full screen, screen rotation, font size, etc.).

On at this stage development, the Librarian is not included in AlReader, so books are opened from the file system, and you will have to load them there manually.

Supported formats include: fb2 (fb2.zip, fbz), txt, txt.zip, epub (without DRM), html, docx, odt, rtf, mobi, prc, tcr.

Of course, it’s convenient when the reader can do so much, but my opinion boils down to the fact that fb2 is more than enough for Russia and the post-Soviet space, and the rest of the world has long switched to EPUB. HTML support is useful, but it is more logical to save such pages through lazy reading tools: Pocket or Instapapper, and it is not worth messing with docx, rtf, mobi and other closed formats.

After that, you can start reading or go to the settings for which AlReader for Windows Mobile is so famous.

Settings

You can’t make shit and say: “well, I’m not a designer.” The concept of “not a designer” does not exist. If you get shit, then you're just a shitty designer. Get better.

Ilya Birman

That’s right, it’s a bit rude, but this is a reality that needs to be corrected. My attitude to the settings is that they should be minimal, the author of the program should decide the issue of design and selection color range, rather than the user spending hours of his life on it.

But apparently a certain level of masochism and nostalgia forced me to seriously rummage through all the settings and adjust appearance under

Own requirements.

As you can see in the images above, the appearance and typography are quite customizable wide range. Can be configured:

  • font for all available styles in FB2 + 2 custom style(character width, letter spacing and line spacing, font style, color);
  • The appearance of the headers and footers and the status bar can be configured separately;
  • The contents of the bottom panel are customizable; the panel itself can hold up to 9 icons and can be scrolled horizontally;
  • padding from each edge of the screen;
  • it is possible to configure separate profiles for night and day modes; profiles can inherit font properties from each other (size, typeface, line spacing and so on.);
  • 9 tap zones are highlighted on the screen for quick access to necessary functions(full screen, page turning, switching to dictionary or editing mode);

It makes no sense to dwell in detail on each setting; if necessary, you will have to dig deep on your own and spend time adjusting the appearance.

Brief information:

    To add your own fonts, create a folder in the root of the memory card fonts and copy any font into it ttf format or otf. After that they will appear in the list of available ones.

  1. To connect your own textures used in substrates, in the AlReader directory located in the root of the memory card, create a folder like name.skin, where name is an arbitrary name and copy the background there. The following designations are used for backgrounds:

    • mozaic.bmp, mozaic.jpg or mozaic.png - a texture that will fill the entire area in the form of a mosaic, used for uniform backgrounds;
    • all.9.png - background, stretches to fill the entire screen, areas marked through the Nine Patch Editor are not changed, ;
    • text.9.png + header.9.png + status.9.png - separate backgrounds for the text area, footer and status bar;
    • text.9.png + header.9.png - separate backgrounds for the text area and footer;
    • text.9.png + status.9.png - separate backgrounds for the text area and status bar;
    • text2page.9.png — background of portrait (two-page) mode.

For all my dislike for the abundance of settings, I can confidently say that Alan made the boundaries of self-expression very wide. Anyone, with taste and desire, can create a truly excellent design for an e-reader.

My opinion is simple, the settings are too overloaded, basic actions:

  • changing font size;
  • headset selection;
  • indication of line spacing;

It should be done in a maximum of 2 clicks; now this rule is only met by choosing the font size.

Extended capabilities

But the settings are far from the most important, the question is much more interesting everyday use AlReader, and here both advantages and disadvantages appear.

  • The advantages include the ability to create shortcuts to the books you are reading,

which allows you to place readable works on your desktop and quickly switch between them;

  • there is a built-in editor that allows you to make edits to books on the fly, I think in many open libraries, most books were read using AlReader;

  • by storing data in file system, can be easily configured automatic synchronization bookmarks and other information via third party applications, such as DropBox, Google Drive;
  • support for very ancient ones Android versions, up to 1.5, I couldn’t find devices older than 2.3;
  • footnotes displayed at the bottom of the page, which allows you to avoid unnecessary movements when reading.

There were some shortcomings. AlReader remained in Windows times Mobile:

  • books are opened in the file system, there is no librarian yet;
  • there is no support for OPSD catalogs, which leads to the need to download books to the device through third-party applications;
  • The scrolling animation is not smooth enough, and the set of animations is quite strange.

Conclusion

Is this reader worth trying, definitely yes. She's fast, she has good support formats, flexibly customized, actively developed by the author, and most importantly, solves the issue of reading in the most convenient form.

Yes, there are inconveniences with organizing the library and downloading books, but these actions take much less time compared to the time spent reading. So the eternal question, “Do you want checkers or go?” is more relevant than ever.

For myself, I chose AlReader and definitely recommend it to everyone who wants to find a simple and reliable e-reader.

P.S. If you would like to receive my AlReader settings, please let me know in the comments.
