low noise model in the segment of classic 15-inch laptops
My acquaintance with laptops under the Samsung brand once began with the X10 model. Which in its class was, if not revolutionary, then very, very advanced, and most importantly, well-assembled. Therefore, in the future, I perceived even the much cheaper “folk” models of this manufacturer without prejudice. And, to be honest, I have not encountered any serious flaws in comparison with the products of traditional “laptop” manufacturers. And this time there’s nothing to particularly criticize the design for...
Design and functionality
For traditional models with a screen size of 14-16 inches, it is quite difficult to “invent” an original, memorable design. Moreover, potential users of such laptops tend to vote for functionality rather than appearance. However, this laptop cannot be called unprepossessing; there is a certain corporate style that, perhaps, not everyone will like, but will attract attention - for example, with some angularity, reminiscent of old, solid IBM models.
The keyboard panel, unlike other parts, is not plastic, but aluminum, and the keyboard itself is recessed several millimeters into the body. But the outer panel of the lid is plastic and simply painted “silver” - or rather, the version we received for testing looked more like polished aluminum due to its characteristic texture (longitudinal notches). But the color range is not limited to this option; black is also available on sale, and on the manufacturer’s website you can find photos with blue, pink and orange lids.
As for the coating option we got, we can note its practicality: dust and other signs of work in “field conditions” are generally less noticeable on gray. By the way, the laptop, despite its full-size dimensions, is also quite suitable as a travel laptop if you are used to working in comfort. The weight for the 15-inch model is low: 2.45 kg.
Let's look at the equipment. On the right side, in addition to the optical drive, there are only two USB ports and a Kensington lock slot.
On the left side: VGA and HDMI ports, an RJ-45 network socket, a power connector, two analog audio outputs and another USB port. What's disappointing is not so much the fact that the laptop only supports USB 2.0, but the fact that there are only three of these ports. This may be a subjective opinion, but for me personally, three ports are not enough on a full-size laptop. When such a laptop sits on the table for some time, you often find that several external drives, some kind of peripherals, etc. are already connected to it. And if such a laptop is used instead of a desktop computer, then you definitely cannot do without a USB hub ( on the other hand, in this case it always makes sense to connect peripherals via a hub to make it faster and easier to disconnect the laptop for carrying).
The bottom surface is flat, the ventilation grilles occupy an extremely small area. And since the main grille is centrally located, holding the laptop on your lap is completely safe. Just don’t leave it on a soft or uneven surface for a long time, especially when working under load. However, low heat dissipation is the main trump card of the new AMD mobile platform, so the user does not need any significant attention to the cooling system.
On the other hand, a novice user will not be able to get to the cooling system to, for example, clean it. In any case, he will not completely remove the bottom cover (although this is not so difficult, the screws are located under the rubber feet), and through the external hatches there is only access to the memory modules.
Keyboard
The island-type keyboard with a standard distance between the centers of the alphabetic keys has a short travel and a fairly pleasant tactile response. You can type quickly, although in terms of noiselessness there are better examples (but still, laptop keyboards traditionally “click” quieter than their desktop counterparts). We will not discuss the presence of a digital block, since it has approximately equal numbers of opponents and supporters of “printing numbers.” In this case, above the five standard rows of keys there is also an additional row with keys for scrolling and editing text. The cursor block is “embedded” in a common field with the surrounding keys, so there is a chance that sometimes the user, when pressing Shift, will “hit” the up arrow. But for games this arrangement is convenient.
Touchpad and positioning devices
The touchpad is located flush with the body panel, and since the keyboard is recessed into it, the user is likely to touch the surface of the touchpad with his palm when typing, so he will most likely want to turn it off for a while. This is done in the standard way by simultaneously pressing the prefix key (Fn) and one of the function keys in the top row, which is not very convenient. Although the separate touchpad keys click a little louder than we would like, they are still much more convenient than the “designer” solution with one large rocker key.
Additional keys and indicators
The laptop did not have additional keys outside the main keyboard, but on the keyboard itself the prefix lock key (Fn Lock) attracted attention. That is, if you rarely use the F1-F12 keys for their standard purpose in programs, you can switch to a mode where pressing them will (without adding a chord with Fn) call up the corresponding system function of the laptop - be it adjusting brightness or volume, switching energy saving modes or wireless network operation.
Additional indicators are built into the front panel, there are four in total (in addition to indicating the power on and the presence of mains power, it displays the activation of the wireless network and the activity of accessing the hard drive). The power button is also ring-lit, but its brightness is minimal and does not distract attention.
Screen and sound
Among the first advertising advantages, the manufacturer notes the narrow screen frame. Here, indeed, we can confirm: the frame is narrow, only 1 cm on the sides, and also matte. But the matrix itself did not stand out in any way, although, however, it did not reveal any distinctive shortcomings. The finish is glossy, the diagonal is 15.6 inches with the most common resolution in the budget segment, 1366×768 pixels (yes, not very high, but the eyes don’t strain when looking at small details).
There is almost no brightness reserve, so most likely you will strive to keep the brightness at maximum, even when running on batteries. Traditionally, modern matrices are characterized by a rather cold color temperature, but this also applies to inexpensive desktop monitors, so for most users there will be no contrast in this regard. The matrix does not suffer from a crystalline effect.
The speakers are located in a “favorable” place, under the screen, so we had the right to expect decent sound from them. Let's be honest: there's nothing to complain about, you can listen to music and, of course, everything else. However, the sound did not cause any particular delight, and those who determine quality by volume and the ability to drown out extraneous noise may even be disappointed, since there is no special reserve in this regard.
There is not the slightest complaint about the sound of the analog output (through high-quality headphones).
Configuration and equipment
The A6-3410 processor belongs to the “middle” range of modern integrated APU APU processors from AMD, but among the “sixes” this model is one of the youngest. The standard frequency is 1.6 GHz, but thanks to TurboCore technology, individual cores can be overclocked quite significantly, as the utility demonstrated in the screenshot above.
As for memory, the laptop has a single DDR3-1333 module with a capacity of 4 GB. Again, it’s unpleasant to see such small savings, because of which the memory controller has to work in single-channel mode. Moreover, for a processor with an integrated video core, memory bandwidth is more critical than for “simple” CPUs. I would immediately buy and install another 4 GB module for such a laptop. On the other hand, a single-module configuration allows you to easily increase the amount of memory without worrying about where to put the old two modules.
The integrated video core is already familiar to us.
And discrete - even more so. And I would prefer to abandon this option altogether - after all, the integrated video core is powerful enough for simple games, including modern ones, like Dirt 3. But if there is a need to run something heavier, such a discrete video is unlikely to help, even though that its resources are combined with the APU's own resources.

It is obvious that the laptop demonstrates typical results for the platform used. The slightly higher processor frequency, however, clearly showed up in all tests, so we can note that the processor scales well in frequency. And if performance is important to you, among modern AMD APU processors it makes sense to choose older models, since they are also inexpensive.
But the disk in this laptop is much faster, but this is not surprising, since its rotation speed in this case is 7200 rpm. It should be noted that disk performance has a greater impact on subjective feelings during everyday work than processor speed (especially when launching programs). So if you have a choice between a powerful processor and a fast hard drive, or, what is even more common, a hard drive with a larger capacity but a lower rotation speed and a fast but less capacious one, I advise you to think carefully before choosing the most popular option.
Battery life
Testing was carried out in two modes: when decoding HD video (cyclic playback of two high-bitrate videos in H.264 format), as well as in idle mode (simulating thoughtful typing or editing text) with the maximum energy saving profile activated, screen brightness reduced to 30% and when the wireless adapter is turned on.
For a full-size laptop with a standard battery, the result is good, although it doesn’t set a record. However, you can safely count on this laptop for short trips during the day, especially when it comes to tasks such as editing documents, receiving and sending letters, etc. Or you can afford to have fun with one movie on a wide screen - however, there are fewer and fewer people who want to carry a full-size laptop for this purpose.
Heat and noise
Let's take a look at the temperature regime. Data taken from the Everest utility during a load test (FurMark test was used to load the graphics cores). In the “load” column for the central processor, the average temperature during the test is also given in parentheses.
High heating under load should not surprise or frighten: this temperature is maintained deliberately - this is what the cooling system is configured for. The result is minimal noise levels, and modern processors are designed to operate in even harsher environments.
The heating of the laptop body is also minimal; only under prolonged maximum load does the bottom on the left side (where the main cooling fan is located) warm up to a warm state: 35-38 degrees.
The idle noise level (25.8 dBA) is below the background level in a quiet room in the evening, that is, it is simply unnoticeable in most cases. The fan also accelerates reluctantly; you need to run the laptop under load for at least 3 minutes to switch to the next speed with a noise level of 28 dBA. And only a long-term load on the graphics subsystem raises the noise level to 32 dBA, which is also unlikely to “offend” anyone’s hearing. In short, the laptop can safely be given a prize for its low noise level.
conclusions
The laptop was pleasantly pleased with the low noise level and minimal heating of the case. The design is also quite attractive; those interested can even look for a model with a “non-trivial” lid color, although the metal version that we received for testing looks good. It is unlikely that this laptop will be chosen by fans of processor tests, but others will be pleased with the response speed and subjective “responsiveness” of the system (not least thanks to the high-performance hard drive). As for the price, budget Samsung models are usually worth the money, given that few manufacturers actively practice competition on the “more for the same money” principle.
