The display, the main part of the Mi Mix 2, did not disappoint. Xiaomi did not get carried away with high resolution, so it is only slightly higher than standard Full HD, namely 2160x1080, which still gives a decent pixel density per inch - 402 ppi. The matrix is the usual IPS, but with good characteristics and perfectly calibrated, as our testing showed. The contrast is high and the brightness too. Gamma and color temperature are close to ideal. There is nothing to complain about.
Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 can be used in stereo, however, one of the speakers is a conversational one, which is correspondingly quieter. The speakers handle simple compositions, like the soundtrack to the first Mafia, confidently. But as soon as you turn on something more saturated, some kind of electronic music, the power is barely enough - the detailing is so-so, the music starts to choke a little. In general, the quality is average. As for headphones, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 does not have a 3.5 mm port, but the kit includes an adapter, so there is nothing to be afraid of.
Cameras
Let's be honest, the camera is one of the weakest points of the Mi Mix 2. It cannot be called bad, but against the backdrop of the overwhelming performance of the platform and the huge supply of RAM, its capabilities look a little ordinary. If even the fairly inexpensive Xiaomi Mi A1 keeps up with the times and has a dual camera and a fashionable ability to blur the background in portrait photographs, then the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 has, firstly, one rear camera, and secondly, there are not enough stars from the heavens. In principle, in automatic mode, if you adjust the exposure (in my opinion, the automatic mode itself often overexposes photos), then you can take good pictures. Then it will be difficult, but doable, to take a frankly bad picture during the day.
You can say as much as you like that the first frameless smartphones were made by Sharp, but this does not cancel the wow effect of the first Xiaomi Mi Mix. But Mi Mix 2 no longer evokes such feelings after the Samsung Galaxy S8, LG G6 and iPhone X. Now it's just another frameless smartphone. And nothing more.
However, the gadget looks good and, what is important for many, expensive. There is a metal frame around the perimeter, and at the back there is a perfectly smooth ceramic panel that can be used as a mirror. It's beautiful, but it quickly becomes covered with fingerprints. And it scratches over time no worse than glass.

Xiaomi managed to make a mistake with the “frameless” display of the Mi Mix 2 right during the presentation of the device in Beijing. The thickness of the frames in the press renderings turned out to be much smaller than in real life. The deceived public immediately began to rightly and noisily be indignant at the entire Internet.
Well, if we talk about the quality of the 5.99-inch display itself, then it is... just normal. It’s appropriate to see something like this in mid-range smartphones, but you can’t help but expect more from a flagship. The screen is based on an IPS matrix with a resolution of 2040x1080 pixels, that is, actually Full HD.
The clarity of the picture is normal; individual pixels are not visible due to the density of more than 400 dots per inch. Color reproduction is natural, but the maximum brightness is even lower than in the first Xiaomi Mi Mix, and the depth of black color is not impressive. There is a night mode, but flexible color tone adjustments are not included in the shell. There are only a few preset options available. However, manual correction for each channel (RGB) is not really needed here.
Under bright light, the image on the display is visible. However, if with a smartphone with AMOLED panels you just walk down the street on a clear sunny day and calmly scroll through instant messengers and social networks, then with Mi Mix 2 in your hand you want to stop somewhere in the shade.

What the Chinese have learned to do well is negotiate with mobile chipset manufacturers. So Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 received the “top” Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, and even as much as 6 GB of RAM. Moreover, there are even modifications of Mi Mix 2 with 8 GB of RAM, but this is completely outright overkill. Xiaomi's logic, obviously, is that it needs to somehow stand out among its competitors' flagships, which are still mostly prudently limited to 4 GB of RAM.
As a result, the iPhone 8, as Apple has always been, is far ahead in terms of performance, and the Mi Mix successfully plays on the same field with the Android giants: Samsung Galaxy S8, LG V30, Sony Xperia XZ1, OnePlus 5 and others.
Nothing more powerful than the Snapdragon 835 has yet been invented for smartphones with a “green robot,” so smile, wave, and launch any mobile games without any problems or slowdowns. And the system, by the way, works very well, although Android 8.0 has not yet been released for it.
No firmware glitches were noticed; after all, the product is aimed at the international, not the local market. With heating, everything is also tip-top. If you look at the smartphone screen, the processor is located in the upper right part of the case - exactly where the user’s fingers are least likely to hit. As a result, the right side of the metal frame may become warm, but everything is within reason.
Be careful when choosing the amount of memory. The basic version has 64 GB, which seems good, but there is no slot for microSD in the device. At all. And this is bad. So it's better to focus on 128 or 256 GB.
Photos are good during the day, but at night there is a lot of noise
Impressions from the 12-megapixel photos of the main camera of Mi Mix 2 are mixed. On the one hand, there is natural color reproduction and surprisingly accurate auto-exposure. The device extremely rarely overexposes or underexposes frames. On the other hand, night photos are frustrating with a huge amount of noise.
At the same time, the algorithms diligently try to make the pictures as sharp as possible, and they succeed quite successfully. Mainly due to the presence of a good image stabilizer. But the autofocus system failed. It is difficult for her to aim at small objects at close range. Macro photography on Mi Mix 2 is a tedious task.

As a result, we can say that compared to the frankly terrible camera of last year's Mi Mix, this is a noticeable step forward. But in comparison with other Android flagships, the results are mediocre. Many “middle peasants” for 20-25 thousand can do at least no worse.
Videos can be recorded in 4K, but it’s better not to try this and limit yourself to reasonable Full HD. The matrix is noisy, the optics are dark (f/2.0). During the day the result is acceptable, at night it is sad.
The front camera is a separate sad song. As before, it is located in the lower right corner of the front panel. If you want a selfie, turn your smartphone upside down. And if only this were okay, the quality of the 5-megapixel self-portraits is such that you want to hug yourself and cry bitterly. In about the same way, budget smartphones are sold for about 10-12 thousand.

The sound was disappointing, but everything was fine with the wireless modules
Last year, Xiaomi developers tried to surprise everyone with a piezoelectric earpiece speaker: the sound was created using vibration of the display. And the result was complete nonsense - quiet and muffled audio.
In Mi Mix 2, they hastened to forget about the failed super-technology and installed a standard speaker in the phone, but it was also disappointing with the quality of voice transmission. And also because at a volume above average, not only you, but also everyone standing nearby can hear your interlocutor.
A similar bleak story with external speakers. Mi Mix 2 is proudly “stereo”, but the second speaker is the same one that is used during conversations. Music and calls end up sounding quiet, everything rattles unpleasantly.
For some reason, the Chinese removed the input for wired headphones, and instead they offer to use an adapter with microUSB of absolutely disgusting quality. These are just right to be sold for half a dollar on Aliexpress, and not put in a box with a gadget for 500 bucks.
If good sound in headphones is important to you, then we recommend passing by this smartphone or using decent Bluetooth solutions with aptX support. Fortunately, Mi Mix 2 supports this codec, as well as Bluetooth 5.0 and NFC. GPS works quickly and accurately enough that you don’t have to worry about it.
Runs less than its predecessor
The Xiaomi Mi Mix had a battery with a respectable capacity of 4400 mAh, in the new Mi Mix 2 it was reduced to 3400 mAh. This is sad, but not fatal. The gadget lasts its honest day from morning until late evening under medium load.
In mono tests, a full charge was enough for 4 hours and 50 minutes of mobile games and a little over 7 hours in Full HD video playback mode. The brightness in both cases was maximum. We previously carried out similar tests with the previous model: the lag is not dramatic, but very noticeable.
Fast charging has accelerated from 2 to 1.5 hours. In 15 minutes, Mi Mix 2 can be charged from 0 to 25%, and in 30 minutes – up to 50%. Well, to achieve a figure of 90%, 60 minutes of connecting to an outlet via the proprietary adapter included in the package will be enough.
Competitors
In China, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 costs about 33-34 thousand rubles. Since it is impossible to officially buy the device in Russia, it is logical to compare it with competitors’ smartphones imported through the same “gray” routes.
If you add a couple of thousand on top, then for 36,000 rubles you can buy a much more “frameless” Samsung Galaxy S8, which doesn’t really need any introduction. It looks no worse, the screen is better, the camera is better and larger, battery life is better, plus normal sound, plus a microSD slot, plus wireless charging and water protection. Killer combo!
For 32,000 rubles you can get an LG G6 with a screen that occupies almost the entire front panel, a much better dual camera and water protection. But there is a minus here - the previous generation Snapdragon 821 chipset. However, it is still wow.

But the amount of built-in storage can vary significantly depending on the version chosen: 64, 128 or 256 GB. The manufacturer did not equip the device with a slot for memory cards.
This gadget works straight out of the box with Android 8.0 and MIUI 9.5 shell on board. All this allows the mobile device to work really fast, as proven by synthetic tests (AnTuTu - about 270,000 points, GeekBench Multi - 8450). There are no problems with performance here, and the power reserve will last for a long time. Even games with very high-quality graphics such as PUBG and WoT run extremely smoothly, and with the maximum possible effects.

The external speaker in the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s sounds convincing and loud, but the bass still merges more with the mid frequencies. Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is one of the most interesting smartphones of the year. It is beautiful, with minimal bezels, made from high-quality materials, built on top-end hardware, but at the same time it costs half as much as any flagship from an A-brand. Xiaomi Mi MIX 2- This is a very cool and pleasant smartphone. It is a pleasure to use, if not for one catch. Next in review I’ll tell you what made me think hard about buying a smartphone for myself.
Set
A normal flagship should be visible already from the box. And if, also kind of like a top-end device, it is hidden in a regular, white package, where everything is exactly the same as for state employees, then Mi MIX 2 received a package of a completely different cut.
First of all, she's black. Which means everything is serious. Secondly, everything inside is neatly laid out in compartments. Thirdly, a cover was immediately found in the kit. And not silicone for one cent, but hard, very pleasant to the touch, reliable, but, most importantly, does not spoil the appearance of the device.
I don't like covers, but this is that rare exception. You can and should only carry Mi MIX 2 in the included case. He's never embarrassed.

Design display
I combined two familiar paragraphs into one. And all because the display in Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is everything and even more. If you are not buying this smartphone because of it, then why are you even buying it!
The screen in Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is the best IPS matrix I have ever seen. Calm, moderately rich, contrasting and beautiful colors. Of course, everything here can be customized to your liking.
Although, if we compare our hero with OLED panels, he cannot stand the competition. Below in the photo are the screens of Mi MIX 2 (left or top) and LG V30+ (right or bottom) with their P-OLED.
It's actually not all that scary. Some people like more natural color reproduction - this is IPS and our hero. Give others an eye-catching picture - these are LG, Samsung and other vendors.
The only thing I didn’t like in the “mix” was auto-brightness - it started to fool me from time to time, so I turned it off. Yes, a feature with a minimum backlight of 1 nit is effective, but first of all I would like to get a normally implemented main function.
The surface has an ideal oleophobic coating, thanks to which the smartphone is simply pleasant to touch. Yes, there is one on the back too, although the lid is, of course, very easily soiled - fingerprints accumulate instantly.
Interesting stuff. I noticed that I take the device in my hand not because I need to check my email or some messenger. I just enjoy holding it in my hands, setting the display on fire, and turning it back and forth.
I haven't experienced anything like this for a long time. The last time something like this came up was when I was testing . But still, it's not the same. After all, this is Samsung, well... you understand what I mean.
I will disappoint those who expect minimal frameworks. They are never minimal here. And Xiaomi somewhat embellishes what it shows us at presentations.

Yes, there is 2.5D glass, but the rounding is minimal. Compared to Mi MIX 2, it looks like baby soap. The “mix” in the body has too much seriousness. But not so much that the design can be called prim.
Along the perimeter we have a frame made of aerospace-grade aluminum alloy. It is polished to a matte finish and is much more practical than the same. There the steel bumper is covered with scratches once or twice.
The back cover is made of ceramic that is noticeably curved at the edges. Its color differs from the body - there is a noble metallic tint. A neat inscription and a gold border around the camera eye (18 carat) - it all looks simply bomb.
There is a fingerprint scanner under the camera. It works well, there are no slips or brakes - everything that is required of it.
And yes, the smartphone is very slippery. If you can still somehow handle it in your hands, then you need to be extremely careful about where you put it. A minimal slope, even invisible to the naked eye, and the device itself will slide to the floor in a couple of minutes. And depending on your luck.
And this is another reason to carry your smartphone in the included case. It adds +256 to the smartphone’s grip. I put on the case and forgot about the slippery smartphone.

Does the Ultrasonic Proximity Sensor cause problems? Hardly ever. “Practically” here because occasionally the display still doesn’t want to wake up when you move the device away from your head. Perhaps this is a software flaw and will be fixed.
Control
There is something to tell about this, so I separated it into a separate section.
Many manufacturers in 2017 faced the problem of screen optimization. Some still haven’t really understood how to optimize the picture for the new 18:9 ratio. Others have rounded the edges of the displays, but don’t know where to put the ugly on-screen keys.
The LED is hidden under the screen
Xiaomi was faced with two problems at once: the screen had new proportions and the corners were rounded.
There are no special problems with the first one. Android is rubber and stretches to fit a new type of screen on its own. At least under the MIUI 8.5 shell.
But Xiaomi doesn’t yet have an ideal solution to the second question. The default MIUI interface has only on-screen buttons. And on rounded corners they look foreign. However, you can hide them from the device settings so as not to spoil the interface.
Now each time you have to make a small swipe from the bottom edge to reach the buttons. By the way, they block part of the open application, but, fortunately, they themselves hide after some time.
Yes, convenience suffers. But with the buttons, everything looks anything but comme il faut. Besides, you quickly get used to such constant swipes.
By the way, in some applications, the corners slightly cut off useful information. For example, in World of Tanks Blitz the title version and FPS rate suffer.

Still, this is not the kind of smartphone that you buy just for the technical characteristics, trying to squeeze every ruble out of it along the way. He looks very cool and I want everything inside him to be to the maximum. Therefore, 256 gigs is just right!
Performance
Snapdragon 835, 6 gigabytes LPDDR4x, at least 64 gigabytes of UFS 2.1 memory - should I continue? I think everything is clear with performance.
And still. I opened “Tanks”, set the graphics settings to the highest possible, launched the game, and during the battles the frame rate dropped once to 59 FPS. Further proof of our hero’s reactivity.
Cameras
Here we have two oddities. The first refers to the front sensor, the second to the rear. Let's figure it out.
Front-camera
The location of the front camera is confusing. There was no room for it above the screen, so the camera module (OV5675) was placed below. For the best effect, the smartphone will have to be turned over each time.
Uncomfortable? Personally, I didn’t think so, although I rarely take selfies and exclusively for testing front cameras.
The most important thing is the quality of shooting, and it is decent.
Main camera
And this is the second strange thing - for some reason Xiaomi decided to install only one module on the back. However, inconsistency is the company's middle name. Either they have a flagship, or Mi MIX 2. Although each of these smartphones could be combined into one and get a truly uncompromising top. But apparently this is too simple.
In any case, forget about background blur, optical zoom and other flagship things of 2017.
And we also forget about the top quality of shooting, because the matrix used here is Sony IMX386 - the same as in .
In general, as soon as Xiaomi starts paying attention to photo and video shooting, I will begin to recommend their devices to everyone without exception. Now, when asked to recommend something from smartphones, I clarify in advance - do you need high-quality photography on a phone? Oh, is it necessary?.. Then we put all Xiaomi devices aside. It's a pity, because they're great.
Okay, I took a whack at the Mi MIX 2 camera. Actually, it’s not bad. It simply lags behind the very best market solutions by at least a year or two.
Pleasant. The smartphone supports full screen shooting. For some reason the format is called “Widescreen 16:9”, and not the logical “18:9”. In this form, the viewfinder opens entirely to the entire display and also takes photographs.
Finally, a short comparison with the LG V30+ camera (left). In general, LG, starting in 2015, abandoned work on photography, so the device will not work as an older, cooler camera.

Video recording
It would seem, 4K, 30 frames per second - what else do you need? But we need real quality, not dry numbers.
Particularly annoying is the disregard for the quality of sound recording.
Not only is the quality in general not very good, but there is also a disgusting gurgling noise reduction, with which the developers do nothing at all.
Optical stabilization works, but is far from perfect - there is a jelly effect.
But for the wretched Slow Motion I scolded and will continue to scold the company. The iPhone learned to shoot 1080p at 120 fps back in 2016. And devices from Xiaomi are still running at 720p. Fine?!
Software
One of the most pressing questions for any Xiaomi device is whether there is global firmware? Yes, I have. She came out almost immediately.
At the moment, the current version is MIUI 9, based on Android 7.1.1. The update to Android 8 is just around the corner. Not for whom exactly - it is still unknown.
It is impossible to find fault with the performance of the software. Nothing glitches, doesn’t crash, doesn’t freeze, and so on. Even notifications are now coming. Not everything and not always, but still this is a significant leap forward. Compared to how it was just six months ago, when you had to dance with a tambourine to force your smartphone not to be silent.
All the nice features of MIUI are in place, including cloning applications, themes, synchronization with Mi account, etc. So let’s not get hung up and move on.
Sound
The earpiece is neatly placed right above the screen. The gap under it is minimal, but the same cannot be said about its volume. I always reduced it to 70-80 percent, because the subscriber on the other end of the line is deafening with his voice. Even in very noisy places with Mi MIX 2 you will hear your interlocutor well.
The main speaker is located next to the USB C port. It plays music in stereo mode, paired with a speaker. The latter sounds, of course, much quieter, but still.
The quality of the multimedia speaker is quite good. No, but still. The volume is average - no surprises.
Since Xiaomi continues to abandon the 3.5 mm audio output for unknown reasons (there is no moisture protection), the kit includes an adapter from the USB C port. We connect the latter to a normal earphone, for example, and try the sound.
And it is high quality, pleasant, detailed and all that. I compared our hero in this parameter with the LG V30+, which is all “hi-fi” and, frankly speaking, did not notice the difference.
Autonomy
The previous mix had a 4,400 mAh battery, and in the new one it was reduced by exactly a thousand mach. Sadly? I didn't think so.
The smartphone lives quietly for one full day with two SIM cards inserted, constant notifications via 4G and Wi-Fi, calls, photos, social networks, and so on.
Once the screen went crazy and lasted for 6 hours straight. I haven’t seen such a record again, but 4 - 4.5 hours of display glow are guaranteed in any case.
Since we have a chipset from Qualcomm, their fast charging is present. And here are the results of my measurements:
- 30 minutes - 55%
- 60 minutes - 90%
- 75 minutes - 96%
- 90 minutes - 100%
Impressive? Still would! And you don’t need to buy anything extra to get the fastest charging possible (hello, Apple!).
If anything, the smartphone takes a long time to charge from a two-amp charger (not the original one) - 2 hours 30 minutes.
Bottom line
Interesting observation. During the test, I gave the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 to several people to hold. Everyone was impressed by the design, pursed their lower lip respectfully, and so on. We were especially surprised by the ceramic back cover and the presence of 18-karat gold in the camera rim. However, surprise increased many times over when I named the price, saying that something was expensive for Xiaomi. And this moment is sincerely incomprehensible to me.
It may cost 1000 dollars, or even 1300, but the incomparable Mi MIX 2 cannot cost half as much? Whatever the case!
Everything is learned by comparison, so the price of Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 is more than adequate. And, if you want a really cool device, then you need to take it.
Yes, the closest competitor in person is also good. However, in terms of design and case materials, it is not a competitor to the second “mix”.
The only thing that let us down was the camera. But here we need to make a reservation. The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 can take excellent pictures, especially in good lighting and with straight hands. And having just one Google Pixel 2 does not guarantee a masterpiece of a photo. Therefore, you shouldn’t be so critical when assessing the photo capabilities of our flagship. But it’s worth criticizing the video recording - it none at all!
