Delete files and folders in Dropbox

Hello users Today I will tell you what kind of Dropbox program this is and whether you can remove it. So, Dropbox is a very popular, if not the most popular cloud on the Internet, you can store personal files in it, and all files are uploaded there through a special program (client) that is installed on your computer. I can personally say that the program has a free version, it is safe, there are no viruses and it is stable. In general, a respected company, therefore it has existed for a long time and occupies a leading position among Internet clouds

Why do you need Dropbox?

Why do you need Dropbox? Well, here everyone will see the pros and cons for themselves, basically this is a service for storing files. In general, I will try to list the main key points:

  • with the help of Dropbox you can store important documents, personal files on the Internet and not worry about their safety, believe that Dropbox will take better care of this; at the same time, no one will see your files and will not be able to obtain them unless you allow it;
  • all your files that are stored in the cloud can be accessed by other people; for example, you can upload photos to the cloud and then provide a link so that someone can download them;
  • initially you are given 2 GB of personal space for files, but believe me, thanks to an interesting system for increasing the volume, you can easily increase it up to 25 GB;
  • on your computer, after installing the special Dropbox software, a certain folder will appear and everything you throw in there will automatically appear in the cloud, this is very convenient;
  • the only negative that I don’t like is that your data on Dropbox servers is not encrypted; the transfer process itself is encrypted by HTTPS, but the files on the servers are no longer encrypted; Of course, this problem can be solved, you can either manually encrypt files using TrueCrypt or BoxCryptor, or, what’s even easier, use the function of setting a password for the archive into which you will pack the files (by the way, this option is available in the archiver); but again, I don’t think that at Dropbox their company didn’t think about the security of your files;

What does this Dropbox even look like?

Before using the program, you need to register in it, that is, in the Dropbox service. I’ll say right away that I did this through their client and there is nothing complicated there. You just need to enter your first name, last name (it can be fake, of course) and email, then a link will be sent to this email where you will need to activate your account. And then in the program there will be a mini-introduction to the service:

Once you have read everything and completed this short guide, the program will already be installed on your computer and the Dropbox folder will immediately open, you can already throw files there and they will soon automatically end up in the cloud. It's convenient, isn't it? This is the folder:

If you click on the program icon below, you will see the following message indicating the latest file transfers to the network cloud:

Dropbox program settings

I think you can easily figure out the settings, here’s how you can get into them:

And here is the settings window itself:

If you want Dropbox not to boot with Windows, then uncheck the second box on the General tab. On the Account tab, you can move the folder into which you can drop files, that is, the Dropbox folder. But do it when there is really a need for it. On the Bandwidth tab, you can set the download speeds to/from Dropbox servers so that it does not interfere with your use of the Internet during its business.

If you click on this icon:

Then the browser will launch (which is your default), and the page of your personal Dropbox account will open in it:

How to uninstall Dropbox?

Can I uninstall Dropbox? Yes, you can, or even need it if you don’t use it. By deleting the client from your computer, you will not completely destroy your Dropbox, you will simply delete the program that connected your computer to the Dropbox servers. At any time in the future, you can install the program again, enter your login and password and everything will start

If you are an advanced user, then I advise you to familiarize yourself with this tool -. This is a super program that can remove software from your PC and then clean the system of debris that the removed software could leave behind. In general, if you have time and desire, then get acquainted, I advise

Before deleting, I think that you need to exit the program:

So, now how to completely remove Dropbox from your computer - click the Start menu and select Control Panel there (if you have Windows 10, then right-click Start and this item will be there):

Now we find the Programs and Features icon:

Find Dropbox here and right-click on it, then select Delete:

After this, a window will appear in which you need to click Uninstall to remove it:

The removal process will begin, it should not be long:

And that’s it, then it will be written that everything was deleted successfully and all that remains is to click the Close button:

You don't even need to reboot, well, in any case, we were not informed about this

Well, now you know Dropbox, what kind of program it is, do you need it and how to remove it? I hope that I wrote everything correctly and clearly, now all I can do is wish you good luck

I really like Dropbox and am a long-time and grateful user. However, I just recently uninstalled the Dropbox app from all my mobile devices one by one. It's not that it doesn't work well, far from it. But a much more compact and convenient solution was found.

The main purpose of the Dropbox client on a mobile device is to provide quick access to your cloud file storage. With its help, you can view, download to your device, or, conversely, upload the files you need to the cloud.

The second useful feature of the program is to automatically upload your mobile photos to Dropbox. This deprives you of the need not only to tinker with connecting your smartphone to the computer, but also to perform any special actions at all. You just take pictures, and after a while the pictures appear in the Dropbox folder, and you can easily view them on your computer.

However, all these actions can be easily implemented without the help of a proprietary client, but with the help of third-party programs. For example, many file managers easily connect to your Dropbox account and work with it just like a regular folder. Here, for example, is how this happens in the popular file manager ES File Explorer.

  1. Launch ES File Explorer and open the left navigation panel.
  2. Go to the "Cloud storage" section.
  3. On the bottom toolbar, click the New button and then select the Dropbox service.
  4. Enter your registration details.
  5. Confirm that ES File Explorer is connected to your cloud storage.

Now you can perform all file operations with your data located in Dropbox, just like with regular local files and directories. Including deleting, renaming, moving, and so on.

You can set up automatic uploading of your photos just as quickly and easily. To do this, we will need the already familiar IFTTT service, which, as you know, has released a special . One of its many advantages is the ability to upload data to Dropbox. This is accomplished using a simple recipe that forces the application to monitor a specific folder on your device and, when new pictures are found in it, send them to Dropbox.

And if you need to send screenshots taken to cloud storage, then use this recipe.

Of course, all the described movements make sense only if you use ES File Explorer as a file manager and IFTTT to automate processes on a mobile gadget. In this case, there is no need for the Dropbox application at all, and you can easily remove it so that it does not take up space and system resources. By the way, the same algorithm can be used to deal with Google Drive or OneDrive clients if you prefer to store your data in these services.

To view a list of your connected devices on the website:

  1. to the site site.
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Go to the tab Safety.
  4. Devices.

How do I unlink my device from my Dropbox account?

To unlink a device from your Dropbox account:

  1. to the site site.
  2. Click your profile photo (or the gray circle) in the top right corner.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Go to the tab Safety.
  5. Your connected devices are listed under Devices.
  6. Click on the icon X next to the device you want to disconnect.

If you don’t want to do this, but delete your Dropbox folder and files synced with Dropbox from your device, you can use for such a device.

What happens when a device is disconnected from my account?

If you disconnect a device, you can easily connect it again by signing into your account in the Dropbox app or app on that device.

If you disconnected your computer from your Dropbox account:

  • Dropbox will sign you out of your account on this device.
  • The Dropbox folder and any files that were synced to the device's hard drive will remain on that device, but changes made to your Dropbox account will no longer sync to them
  • Files with the "online only" setting enabled (if the function is enabled) will not open on this device

If you unlink your mobile device from your Dropbox account:

  • This device will be logged out of the Dropbox app and will not be able to open files saved for offline use.

Plus, Professional and Business account users

If you disconnect a device on the site, you can also use and delete the Dropbox folder from this device.

For Smart Sync users

If you turn off your device without deleting your files, all online-only files will remain empty on your computer. If you want to keep all your files on your computer, we recommend that you make all files on the device available offline before turning off your device.

How to merge the contents of two Dropbox accounts

The merge feature is useful if you need to transfer all your files to another Dropbox account or combine two accounts with different files. To merge your Dropbox accounts, follow these steps:

  • note: This will move only the shared folders themselves, but not the membership rights for them. If you decide to merge accounts, you may need to reconnect to the shares you were previously a member of.

Instructions - how to manually merge accounts:

Let's call the account from which you want to copy the contents account A, and the account into which you want to place all the files account B.

  1. Sync all the contents of Account A with your computer. To do this, log into Account A in Dropbox on your computer and sync. Make sure that all the contents of Account A are now saved on your computer. Be sure to check if you have it enabled.
  2. Once synchronization with Account A is complete, disconnect the account by following the instructions above.
  3. Log in to account B and select Install. If you want to merge two personal accounts, Account A's Dropbox folder will be renamed to Dropbox (old), and Account B's Dropbox folder will be named Dropbox.
  4. On your computer, find the folder Dropbox (old), containing all the data from account A, and open it.
  5. Open the folder Dropbox, linked to account B.
  6. Copy or move files from a folder Dropbox (old) account A to a new folder Dropbox Account B. If you receive a message saying that your new Dropbox folder already has a file called ".dropbox", select the "Don't copy" option.
  7. The merging process will be completed when all data has been copied or moved to the folder Dropbox account B and synchronization with account will be performed.

If you copy folders or files with the same names as existing folders or files in your Dropbox folder, a "(1)" will be appended to their name. This is done so that you can easily distinguish which data comes from where. After this, you can decide for yourself what to do with the duplicates.

In previous articles we reviewed, learned, and visited. In this article we will look at the basic settings.

Let me remind you that you can download the program. As usual, I have prepared a video for you where I tell you how to set up Dropbox. And for those who are accustomed to text and screenshots, you will find all this under the video.

We will start with the settings of the program that we installed on our computer. To do this, click on the Dropbox icon in the lower right corner of the monitor and in the menu that opens, click on the “wheel”:

In the menu that opens, you will be presented with several main tab sections:

  • Are common;
  • Account;
  • Import;
  • Bandwidth;
  • Proxy servers;
  • Extended.

And let's start with General Settings.

The first checkbox allows us to allow or disable the display of program notifications in the Windows notification area (in the lower right corner of the monitor).

What notifications are we talking about?

For example, that some file from your Dropbox folder has changed. I have Dropbox installed on several computers and when I change a file in the Dropbox folder on one computer, a notification about this immediately pops up on the other computer.

The same notification pops up when you share a folder and one of the people to whom you have shared access has changed the files in that folder.

Or, for example, if you want to take a screenshot of your desktop, then after the image is placed in the Screenshots folder you will immediately see a notification about this. This is what it looks like:

The next checkbox allows you to enable or disable the Dropbox program at the same time you start your computer.

The third function allows you to enable or disable file synchronization over the local network. This is an advanced setting. Usually it is needed when you have several computers on your work or home network connected and synchronized via a local network.

This can be useful when you want the files of your Dropbox folders installed on different computers to be synchronized not through the Dropbox server, but directly over the local network.

Personally, I have all three checkboxes active.

Next section “Account”

In this section we see which Dropbox account this computer is connected to. This setting will be useful for those who have multiple Dropbox accounts.

Here you can disconnect and connect your local Dropbox folders to different accounts and synchronize.

The next tab is Import.

Here we can set the screenshots to be saved to Dropbox. Let me remind you that a screenshot is a snapshot of your screen. Your keyboard has a Print Screen button. On laptops it can be abbreviated:

This button allows you to take a photo of your monitor, or rather what you currently see on the monitor. I use this feature often. Especially when I need to show something to another person.

For example, there are situations when something on my site does not work. I write to my system administrator and ask them to fix the problem. But the administrator tells me that everything is fine with me.

Then I take a screenshot of my monitor on which my website is open with the breakdown that I see and send him this screen (it is saved in jpg format).

The admin looks at what exactly I point out to him and then we deal with the reasons, which, by the way, may not be in the site at all, but, for example, in the browser of my computer. In such cases, clearing the browser cache helps.

Another useful feature of Dropbox is that we can take screenshots and immediately save a link to this picture to the clipboard, which, like all other files, will be uploaded to the Dropbox server in our account.

To do this, press Ctrl+Print Screen on your keyboard.

Personally, I have this checkbox disabled, since I use the Clip2Net program to create screenshots, which has more advanced functionality for creating screenshots. I will tell you about this program in one of the following articles.

This function allows us to set certain scenarios for the computer’s actions when a camera, video camera, flash drive or any other removable storage device is connected to it:

For example, if you want all the photos from your camera to be immediately imported into one of the Dropbox folders when you connect it to your computer, then we can configure this here.

Bandwidth

This settings section is also intended mainly for advanced users. If you don’t understand what we’re talking about here, then it’s better not to touch anything.

This section will be useful for those who have limited Internet speed, for example, for those who connect to the network via a 3G or GPRS modem. Usually the Internet when using these technologies is not so fast and you have to wait a long time for each page to open. And if Dropbox updates also load the Internet channel, then you may not even wait for the page to load.

In addition, it is worth remembering that such methods of connecting to the Internet usually charge a fee for each megabyte downloaded. So speed limiting can also be used to save money.

I didn’t touch anything in this section, since I use high-speed and unlimited Internet.

Proxy servers

Another setting for the advanced. I didn't touch anything here either. If you use proxy servers to access the network, you can set the necessary parameters here.

Advanced setup

This section allows you to change the location of the Dropbox folder on your computer. This may be necessary when you have several hard drives installed on your computer, or the hard drive is divided into several volumes.

For example, I have hard drive C and E. Drive E is much larger than drive C, so I placed the Dropbox folder on drive E.

Please note that the Dropbox folder can only be located on your local computer. You cannot install it on a removable hard drive, flash drive, or floppy drive.

The following setting is Selective synchronization in the Advanced setting tab:

This setting allows you to specify the folders that you want to synchronize with your Dropbox account and other devices (laptop, tablet, smartphone) connected to this Dropbox account.

If you want all folders to be synchronized, then check the boxes next to each folder. If you want to disable a folder, then uncheck the box from the desired folder.

Personally, I created Dropbox specifically for the purpose of synchronization and there, in general, all folders are subject to synchronization. So I have checkboxes next to all the folders.

After each change, do not forget to click the Apply button. At this point, we have sorted out the program settings on our computer and now let's look at the settings of your account on dropbox.com

On the left is a menu for moving between different types of folders and files:

By clicking Files, the root directory of your Dropbox account will open, where you will see a list of all your files and folders.

In the Shared section we can find those folders and files to which we have public access.

The Events section shows your activity with Dropbox. For example, if you deleted a file or folder. Or if you added something. If you have shared access to some other user's folder and you have joined this folder, etc. In general, everything that you or someone else did with your account.

In the Getting Started section, you will be offered actions with which you can set up Dropbox and increase the size of your folder.

Basic account settings are set from the context menu, which can be called up by clicking on your name:

Here we have 5 main settings tabs:

  • Intelligence;
  • Account settings;
  • Safety;
  • Bonus place;
  • My applications.

The Information section displays information about your account, total disk space, amount of used and free space.

In the Account Settings section you can:

  • Change your name;
  • Change email address;
  • Configure the time zone and settings for various notifications;
  • Link your Dropbox account to your social media accounts.

Everything here is by default.

In the Security section you can:

  • Change password;
  • Set up notifications about actions on your account;
  • Rename the names of devices connected to this Dropbox account;
  • Unlink or link one of your devices to this account;
  • See which browsers are used to log into your Dropbox account from different devices. You can also end your session on one of your devices here.

In the Bonus place section you can:

  • Invite a friend to receive additional space in your Dropbox account (500MB per friend);
  • See what types of bonuses you have already received;
  • See which friends have accepted your invitation to join Dropbox.

In the My Apps section, you can see which API apps are connected to your Dropbox account. Here I am empty, since I am not using any applications yet.

Finally, let’s also look at a few buttons in the main section of your account:

1. Upload is a button that allows you to upload any files from your hard drive or flash drive to your Dropbox account. Sometimes it's necessary when you're working on someone else's computer and you need to throw some file into Dropbox so you can work on it later.

2. Create Folder – Using this button, you can create new folders in your account, which will immediately appear in your local Dropbox folder on your computer.

4. Show deleted – using this button you can view a list of deleted files and folders. You can distinguish deleted files and folders by their gray color:
