And you guys know what that means. As soon as the article about the second card was completed, testing of the SLI mode immediately began. Nowadays it is very difficult to find two identical cards, so different ones were used. It’s interesting what advantages using two cards will bring, especially interesting is the comparison of two GTX 1070 with one GTX 1080. The cards were tested using our established methods. This review contains more numbers than words; I am sure that this presentation is simpler and clearer.

As already noted, we will not go into details when testing SLI. I had to skip some tests because they didn't support SLI. Typically, in such cases, tests with SLI turned out worse than with a single card.

After the successful start of the GeForce GTX 1080, Nvidia presented a second surprise for gamers by announcing a successor GeForce GTX 970 in the form of a GeForce GTX 1070 video card. Naturally, significantly reducing the cost of the new product - up to $379 for partner models and $449 for the reference design version.

The main innovation in the GeForce GTX 1070 is the same as in the GeForce GTX 1080 - the 16 nm manufacturing process. Thanks to it, 7.2 billion transistors fit into a medium-sized graphics processor (314 mm2), which allows us to say that the GP104 replaces the GM204 in complexity, but surpasses it in capabilities.

New opportunities

Within the framework of the 16 nm process technology, Nvidia managed to significantly increase the operating frequencies of the video core, and now in GPU Boost mode an incredible value is achieved - 1.7-1.8 GHz. Overclocking will also please enthusiasts.

Let's make a small remark explaining the reasons for the low performance increase during overclocking. The fact is that even the standard GPU Boost mode constantly maintains a high GPU frequency, so overclocking is relative size measured at a modest +150-200 MHz. At the same time, you can’t count on a light 2.0 GHz in the case of the GeForce GTX 1070. The company's developers made every effort to ensure that the younger model would under no circumstances catch up with the older one.

From here and originally low level TDP, and a modest margin for maximum power consumption. We can only hope for the appearance of a modified BIOS version, which opens access to an increased limit. So far, no one has been able to shift the limit by editing and recording the extended TDP. According to my observations, the graphics processor should scale well with increasing voltage, reaching frequencies of 2.3-2.4 GHz in air, but then the power consumption of the video card will no longer be so impressive and will easily exceed 200 W.

Compared to the GeForce GTX 1080, the new model has lost GDDR5X memory, remaining with the old GDDR5. Moreover, due to the many physical Nvidia optimizations easily cut off the excess price and sent the new product to the middle class segment.

Of course, all the innovations previously described for the GeForce GTX 1080 are fully suitable for the GeForce GTX 1070. We will only repeat that the company really believes in the future of 3D reality, so many innovations are aimed at supporting solutions coming out soon. The main improvements inside the video core are aimed at optimizing work with 3D glasses and we can talk about this endlessly. Let's focus on the main thing.

First, it's single-pass stereo imaging for VR. Thanks to the technology, the work of the GPU “in geometry” is reduced, which significantly increases performance without compromising quality. Secondly, the driver and video card take into account the geometric features of the lenses in 3D glasses and use special algorithms calculation.

Let's also mention new mode Sli with double bridges. Initially, many observers misinterpreted Nvidia's announcement of the new connection. GeForce GTX 1080 can still be combined in 3- or 4-Way configurations, but the emphasis is gradually shifting towards 2-Way. This is due to the sufficient performance of the GP104.

Even one video card is superior to the GeForce GTX Titan X, and a pair is enough for 100 frames per second and 4K resolution in any game. The old Sli bridges can still be used, but greater resolutions are available with the new ones.

And since we're talking about the graphics processor, let's take a closer look at it. In fact, we have a middle-class solution, and more expensive and productive models, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 and GeForce GTX 1070 will be considered the fastest video cards.

In the full GP104, each SM is paired with the Polimorph engine. But to meet modern demands, a new Multi-Projection block was installed in it. The GeForce GTX 1070 has one block disabled, leaving 15 streaming multiprocessors instead of 20.

The pair of SM and the Polimorph engine form the TPC block.

The GP104 contains four GPCs, each of which consists of five TPCs and a total of eight memory controller segments for the entire chip. Each TPC consists of SM and Polimorph. Each SM contains 128 Cuda cores and 256 KB of cache, 96 KB of shared memory and 48 KB of L1 cache, as well as eight texture units.

Any SM can work with a queue of up to 32 commands. Eight 32-bit video memory controllers remain on the outer edge.

DX12 support was expressed in a new mode of operation of the task scheduler, which is directly related to the fact that the Pascal video core has dynamic distribution. And so that it does not stand idle at the moments when the processing of graphic data is completed, the scheduler throws the cores computational problem. This reduces the GPU's idle time significantly.

On Asus and Zotac GTX 1070, the mining speed, as well as the noise level during the operation of the cooling system, make these two options optimal. The mining consumption of the 1070 depends on the overclocking parameters, but they rarely require more than 170 watts.

Overclocking the GTX 1070 for mining is possible in the popular MSI program Afterburner, which is also used to increase performance in games. On the GTX 1070, the mining performance indicator should be increased gradually, testing the stability of the card and cooling system after increasing it.

In the second half of 2017, when the line of video cards from Nvidia 10xx was already formed and no new products should be expected in it, the corporation presented the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti - a modification of the GTX 1070 with an increased number of stream processors and texture units.

The video accelerator took pride of place between the original model and its older brother, the GTX 1080.

Let's compare these models with each other and consider the intermediate option in detail, also discovering the difference between the hero of the article and the RX Vega 64 from Radeon.

Characteristics

A video adapter has been assembled on a graphics processor, codenamed GP104, where one multiprocessor unit remains inactive.

Compared to 1070, where there are only 1920 computing cores, in this version there are 2432 of them, which is only 5% less than in 1080, and as much as 27% more than with original version.

What happened in the end: a well-improved version of the 1070 or a slightly stripped-down sample of the 1080, judge for yourself based on the information provided and the test results.

Based on the second point of view, the graphics memory has undergone the greatest changes.

Instead of high-speed GDDR5X modules operating at an effective frequency of 10 GHz, its previous version is used - GDDR5, which operates at a frequency of 8000 MHz. The memory capacity in all samples is 8 GB, as is the currently supported latest version 12.1.

The video cards are equipped with a classic 256-bit memory bus for their niche.

For greater clarity, the main specifications GPUs assembled using the GP 104 core are included in pivot table.

The declared frequencies of the 1070 and 1070 Ti are in the range of 1607–1683 GHz, which is slightly lower than in the GDDR5X-based video accelerator – 1607–1733 GHz.

The stated power consumption of the model in question is at 180 W, the same as the 1080, which is 30 W more than the original version, and much lower than the RX Vega 64, where this figure is actually 300 W.

Nvidia has limited manufacturers' ability to overclock devices, so they come out without prior factory overclocking, offering the same performance.

Depending on the partner, the user will receive a video accelerator, which is different from competitive models only appearance and cooling system.

Fresh drivers, of course, you will have to download it yourself from the Nvidia website, and it is recommended to do this immediately after starting the computer with the new graphics processor.

The video card is equipped with three large fans and a massive cooler, which will take up more than one. The device's length of 30 cm does not allow it to be placed in miniature-sized cases. The cooling system is covered with a black casing, along the length (on the sides) of which there is a strip of LEDs.   • one aging DVI port for connecting not the latest monitors and other devices.

Cooling system

A solution called DirectCU is used as heat dissipation elements, which means there is no direct contact with the base of the printed circuit board.

It was not chosen by chance - experiments have shown that such a design is more effective than previous solutions.

WITH reverse side board, if you remove the metal casing, you will see a smeared contact pad and six heat pipes passing near the heated elements themselves: the video chip and memory. All of them are in one way or another in contact with the radiator, made in the form of thin metal plates. The design is selected in such a way as to maximize the area from which thermal energy will be transferred environment, in particular through fans.

Under this protective and structurally reinforcing casing there is a large block of LEDs, thanks to which the logo on the video card case is illuminated.

The light-emitting elements are powered via a separate cable.

The radiator is made of two parts:

  • its first block is located at the base of the printed circuit board;
  • the second is located in the opposite part of the device above the heat pipes, and also contacts the elements of the electrical power supply system.

A thermal pad is placed between the radiator and the power elements, ensuring efficient heat transfer from transistors and graphics chip and reliable pressing of the elements to the surface of the radiator.

A set of 8 memory chips with a capacity of 16192 MB each is cooled by a separate heat-conducting metal plate, curved in the shape of the letter “G”. The heated air is taken from the metal plates and tubes by a system of three equally directed fans, each with a diameter of 90 mm. In addition, they are all located in the same plane, which indicates that the active cooling system is not the best implementation.

The base of the model exactly repeats printed circuit board The GTX 1070, if you don't look at a few minor changes, the biggest of which is the increased number of capacitors in the GPU power supply area.

Moreover, high-quality elements are used as electronic components, which are installed at ASUS factories only in expensive products.

Nutrition

Specification

The default operating frequencies are exactly those given in technical documentation. They are changed using proprietary ASUS software GPU Tweak, where you can switch between suggested modes and create custom templates.

In testing, we made do with the default settings and manually changing operating frequencies.

Testing was carried out at room temperature around 23 °C. Under such conditions, even under long-term load (about a quarter of an hour) in the Superposition Benchmark test application, the temperature only slightly exceeded 62 °C, and this was when overclocked at frequencies of 1850–1860 MHz and even at the maximum 1886 MHz, which we were able to conquer. The fan rotation speed was in the range of 1245-1282 rpm in normal mode and about 1500 rpm. The noise was extremely low and was completely covered by the hum hard drive and an active cooling system for the power supply. Typical performance for an overclocked GP104 chip.

In the summer heat open case and longer work under load, the indicators may be less comfortable, however, even a slight increase in the noise and temperature of the video card is unlikely to significantly affect the acoustic comfort and its performance properties.

Cheaper GTX 1070 Ti samples with a simplified heat dissipation system show more severe heating and produce more noise, and have less overclocking potential, but only due to worse cooling.

Reference samples of the GTX 1080 show significant drops at operating frequencies up to 1.8 GHz, which is partly compensated by the difference in the number of computing units, which is about 5%.

It follows that the main advantage of the GTX 1080 is its higher operating frequency.

Is it possible to at least partially reduce this gap?

All GTX 1070 models were able to exceed the 9 GHz mark, however this option could barely cope with 8900 MHz, which is a common indicator for the model range. We were able to get the core to work at a frequency of 1.8 GHz, and in Boost mode managed to achieve 2088 MHz.

With this overclocking, the maximum power consumption increased by 1/5 of the declared one.

Price

Gaming tests

During testing, we decided to abandon the GTX 1070 and replace it with a competing model with similar technical indicators and performance in the form of the RX Vega 64.

Below are the main parameters of the tested graphics accelerators.

The test bench was used in the following configuration:

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-6950X (4.1 GHz);
  • motherboard: MSI X99S MPower;
  • RAM: G.Skill F4-3200C14Q-32GTZ (4×8 GB, DDR4-3200);
  • disk: Intel SSD 520 Series 240GB;
  • HDD: Hitachi HDS721010CLA332;
  • PSU: Seasonic SS-750KM;
  • monitor: ASUS PB278Q (27″).

Software:

  • OS: Windows 10 64 ische;
  • GTX 1070 Ti driver: version 13;
  • GTX 1080 driver: version 41 and 385.69;
  • Radeon driver RX 64 Vega: version 17.9.1 and 17.9.3.

Tests were carried out at a maximum monitor resolution of 2560x1440 pixels. The first result is on DirectX 11 with factory settings, the second is after overclocking, the bottom is the same, but using technology, and for Radeon the data is given when operating on different driver versions.

Battlefield 1

For GeForce, performance with different versions of the DirectX API is significantly different: when using version 11, both video cards show higher results, both in normal mode and when manually increasing operating frequencies.

So on DirectX12 RX Vega 64 leaves even the older Nvidia model behind.

The GTX 1070 ti is inferior to the 1080 by approximately 5%, which is partially covered by overclocking.

Deus Ex

Here the difference between API versions is not so noticeable, but the Radeon video card still leaves its competitors behind in all cases.

Difference between the two GeForce versions from 5% in the previous case increases approximately one and a half times - up to 7-8%.

Here overclocking has less effect on the GTX 1070 ti.

DiRT 4

In Dirt 4 the situation is standard, overclocking the 1070 Ti also prevents her from catching up with her older brother.

Divinity: Original Sin 2

In this role-playing game, the result surprised us. The video accelerator in question lost more than 10% to the 1080, although overclocking fully compensates for this when compared with the reference model of a more powerful card.

The flagship from Radeon was inferior to both competitor video cards.

Fallout 4

The gap between the hero of the article and his older brother is 4-6%.

The 1070 Ti is ahead of the RX Vega 64 in average, but is slightly inferior in maximum, in higher frequencies the situation remained unchanged.

For Honor

Updated version The game has increased its performance, which, combined with the latest version of the graphics driver for the RX Vega 64, gives a noticeable acceleration.

During the test, we no longer had a GTX 1080, so we put the results of the old testing into the table ( previous version games and drivers), which could reduce the difference between Nvidia devices to literally 2%. Under the same conditions, most likely, the difference would be at least 2 times greater.

Gears of War 4

Buying a video card, especially a top-end or pre-top class, is a responsible task, because no one wants to spend their hard-earned money without the confidence that every ruble is justified by megahertz, gigabytes and other complex technical parameters. I came across a review (thanks to the resource techgage.com for the idea), in which several current video cards are tested. So, NVidia GeForce GTX 1070 Ti, comparison with competitors close in spirit and flesh.

Purpose of comparison

As always, let’s first decide what we want to learn from such testing, what useful information we can learn. IN in this case I'm not so much interested in absolute numbers (FPS, etc.) as in understanding what could be the best purchase, taking into account the performance and cost of the video card.

The video cards involved in testing are: GTX 1070, GTX 1070 Ti, GTX 1080 and AMD Radeon RX Vega 56. All of them are in the price range of $400-500, or in our opinion – about 30,000-45,000 rubles. However, we'll talk about prices later.

It must be said that the orderly hierarchy of video cards (1060, 1070, 1080) of the Ti modifications has been somewhat confused, because it is not very clear, for example, 1070 Ti - is it a good 1070 or a bad 1080? And yet, in addition to the specific numbers that video cards show in tests, there is another interesting point, but let’s first present the main characteristics of the comparison participants.

As you can see from the specifications, the GTX 1070 Ti is much closer to the GTX 1080 than to the 1070, on which it is supposedly based. The number of cores, compared to the older model, is a little over a hundred less, and base frequency the work is generally the same. And the difference in the number of texture overlay blocks is minimal.

True, there is a difference in memory, because the 1080 uses the faster GDDR5X, which has a speed of 10 Gbit/s versus 8 Gbit/s for GDDR5. And yet this interesting opportunity compare two models with fairly similar characteristics, 1070 Ti and 1080. Starting from the same frequency, you can see how important the number of cores is; of course, video memory performance makes its contribution.

Well, you can’t do without AMD products. Which option is the most interesting, what should you focus on and what should you spend your money on?

Test stand

The following computer configuration was used:

  • Processor: Intel Core i7-6900K.
  • Motherboard: GIGABYTE X99-Ultra Gaming.
  • Memory: G.SKILL TridentZ (4x8GB; DDR4-3200 14-14-14).
  • Storage device: Kingston SSDNow V310 960GB SATA.
  • Power supply: Corsair RM650x.
  • OS: Windows 10 Pro 64 bit.

The drivers used were GeForce 388.13 for NVidia and Radeon 17.11.1, respectively, for the RX Vega 56 video card.

Test results

Most best test- these are games. Synthetics are synthetics, but most real numbers are not obtained in fictitious benchmarks. That's why the check was carried out in modern games.

1080p mode is not an issue for any of the participating graphics cards. The GTX 1070 showed a minimum of 99 FPS, all others significantly exceeded the 100 FPS mark. Even the Ultrawide 1070 Ti did not drop to 60 FPS, and it is quite possible to play in 4K resolution, although most likely, most will still lower the graphics settings to increase FPS, or switch to a lower resolution to get the highest quality picture.

The GTX 1080 is expectedly ahead, the 1070 Ti is exactly in the middle between it and the 1070. The video card from AMD is very close to the NVidia titanium version.

Destiny 2

No one had any problems at 1080p resolution (for some reason the 1080 video card was not included in testing at this resolution). You can even play in 4K on any video card.

The results are quite solid, and the Radeon does not lose much to the competitor's top solution, overtaking the 1070 Ti.

The game seriously loads the video card. AMD performed more than adequately, losing only 1 FPS to the 1080 video card at 1080p. At higher resolutions, the Radeon was at least no worse than the 1080. However, the 1070 Ti also performed at the same level, being very close to the older model, the 1070 lagged behind it more.

At 1080p resolution, all video cards showed an average FPS of over a hundred. With increasing resolution, the video chip from AMD felt better and better, going almost on par with the 1070 Ti, which had stronger drawdowns in complex scenes.

However, in 4K mode, when using even a 1070 Ti, it is better to reduce the graphics settings, since the number of frames is noticeably reduced. Although there is still no need to talk about delays, the minimum values ​​of 34 FPS may already be alarming.

The settings turned out to be very “heavy” for all video cards. If no one has any problems at 1080p, then at 4K they are again too aggressive for all test participants. It is noticeable that at low resolutions the 1070 outperforms the RX Vega 56, and at high resolutions, on the contrary, AMD looks better, although only slightly. The 1070 Ti looks more than decent, only slightly inferior to the leader.

A very “heavy” game for almost any video card at high graphics settings. In this case, it is not so much the specific values ​​that are interesting as the differences between video processors. The GTX 1070 Ti is literally hot on the heels of its big sister's FPS. The RX Vega 56 also looks decent.

For 4K resolution, such graphics settings are absolutely not suitable for any video cards. You'll either have to settle for more low resolution with maximum “picture” quality, or sacrifice the visual part in favor of high resolutions screen.

This game also does not stand on ceremony with video cards, squeezing all the juice out of them. If in 1080p mode everything works without problems, then as the screen resolution increases, the number of FPS drops rapidly, and the results of different video chips differ less and less from each other.

Again, the differences between the 1070 Ti and 1080 get smaller as resolution increases. AMD also loses less performance compared to the regular 1070 as the load increases.

Be that as it may, 4K mode at such settings is beyond the capabilities of any video card. Either sacrifice image detail, or switch to lower resolutions.

Conclusion. NVidia GeForce GTX 1070 Ti, comparison with its closest competitors

What do we have in the bottom line? It is clear that the GTX 1080 is the undisputed leader, not inferior to any of the this set video card models. The GTX 1070 Ti and RX Vega 56 are fairly close, although in the vast majority of cases the NVidia GPU variant is faster. Sometimes very little, but nonetheless.

The same can be said about the rivalry between the regular 1070 and the RX Vega 56, although in this case AMD often comes out on top. If we do not take into account the 1080, then, based on the results shown, the hierarchy is as follows: GTX 1070 Ti, RX Vega 56, GTX 1070.

And here, in addition to the obtained figures reflecting the capabilities of the video card, an objective factor appears - price. Let's take a look at what is currently being offered at what price.

GTX 1080 can be purchased at our retail, paying no less than 34,000-35,000 rubles. For example, this is the Palit GeForce GTX 1080 video card. However, the base frequency is slightly different from the standard one indicated on the website - 1620 MHz. There are other offers, and the price reaches 50,000 or more. There are higher frequencies, both base and maximum, more efficient systems cooling.

The GTX 1070 video card starts at about 27,000 rubles for compact MSI GeForce GTX 1070 AERO ITX OC. The maximum price approaches 40,000 rubles.

The GTX 1070 Ti variant falls exactly between these models, and among the most affordable is, again, a video card from Palit. Cost – about 32,000 rubles.

The availability of AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 is currently low, and the prices, frankly, are not encouraging. Less than 38,000 rubles. I can't find this model.

At the same time, the results show the superiority of the 1070 Ti over its competitor from AMD, and the cost is at least not higher. In addition to everything, manufacturers take “liberties” with the frequency of the video card, as well as with its maximum value in Boost mode, which also affects the price.

In my opinion, based on the combination of qualities, the most justified purchase is the “titanium” version of the GTX 1070. Relatively short of the leader, it is cheaper than the 1080, faster than the RX Vega 56 (and cheaper) and noticeably faster than the 1070. In this case, the difference is The price between the latter and the 1070 Ti is quite justified. This is exactly the video card whose capabilities are more than enough for the foreseeable future.

Unless, of course, we are talking about games in 4K resolution, but, let's face it, that's a different story and even 1080 doesn't always cope with such a load at high settings.

While losing little in terms of specifications, the GT 1070 Ti video card is also slightly inferior in performance to the top-end 1080. The decision about which one to choose is largely determined by price. If the difference is minimal, then, given the cost, it makes sense to overpay a little and take the 1080. If every ruble counts, and games at resolutions greater than 1080p are not of interest to you, then let’s face it, the capabilities of the 1070 Ti are more than enough. And this will probably remain so in the next year or two. Moreover, this video card is not without overclocking capabilities.

It should be taken into account that a powerful video card requires an appropriate processor. However, not every one of them will be able to load a powerful video chip with work.

It is difficult to advise AMD at the moment precisely because of its cost. GTX 1070 is, so to speak, a budget option among top video cards. However, its capabilities will also be enough for the near future, and this a good choice, especially if there is a “tasty” offer.

Well, my favorite in this case is NVidia GTX 1070 Ti. Just don't forget about good processor, a large monitor and - and go ahead, “kill” the enemies, achieve victory!
