  • the copied data is suitable for recovery; if a tape is used, it must be read in another tape drive.

Make sure that the data can be recovered on the server and that Exchange can retrieve the information.

If one of the three checks fails, the cause of the failure must be found and corrected. For example, during a hot copy, Exchange calculates a checksum for each page and compares it to the checksum of the page on disk. If the checksums do not match, error 1018 is issued and the copying process stops. If errors are detected during the scan, the administrator will have a chance to correct the problems before stopping the copying procedure.

Even good backups may become unusable over time due to changes in the environment, backup software, Windows or Exchange configuration. The most reliable guarantee of success is regular checks, and the fastest and easiest way to ensure that your backups are working is to check the event log, applications and reports generated by the backup program. The event log should not contain any errors generated by Exchange during the backup period. The backup program report contains information about missing files and other errors.

Incorrect transaction log processing

The ability to recover an Exchange database is determined by the state of the transaction logs. If there is a valid set of log files for the database, then it is possible to recover the database from the point of failure. Conversely, if logs are lost or corrupted, the likelihood of full recovery is reduced. During the recovery process, Exchange attempts to replay log files sequentially, starting with the first log needed by the database (also called the low anchor log) and ending with the last available log (high anchor log). If there is no log file between the bottom and top anchors, log playback stops. The restore procedure cannot resume until the missing log file is restored.

Online backups automatically include log files as part of the backup set. During normal operation, Exchange continues to create new log files as transactions occur. These log files remain on disk until a full or hot copy is performed, at which point the Exchange IS process truncates or deletes the files. You cannot delete log files yourself. In some cases, you may need to copy the log files to a separate directory for safekeeping. The Microsoft article "Offline Backup and Restoration Procedures for Exchange" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=296788) recommends saving copies of transaction logs to a separate location before restoring data from an offline backup.

When restoring with NTBackup, logs are not replayed unless the Last restore set checkbox is selected (or a similar checkbox in another backup program). The database being restored cannot be mounted unless this option is selected or the Eseutil /r command is used to manually start log processing.

If there are no transaction logs or at least one log file is corrupted, you should use Microsoft's free Exchange Server Disaster Recovery Analyzer (ExDRA). The backup process takes time. Each server configuration has a throughput metric that reflects the amount of data that can be copied or restored in a given period of time. A common mistake is to underestimate the time required for recovery. Taking too long to recover sometimes results in service level agreement (SLA) violations and often leads to user dissatisfaction.

Microsoft recommends measuring the time it takes to back up your data and allowing twice as much time for recovery. Why does it take twice as long to restore than to copy? Let's say we need to get a 60 GB copy of a database using a backup system with a write speed of 12 GB/hour. Five hours is an acceptable time for a backup. Of the many backup-related errors, you might get the message "Some files were unavailable during the last backup" is probably the worst, especially since you have no idea what exactly was wrong to begin with.

This usually happens for a number of reasons, ranging from poor network connections, backup management failures, and conflicting files. And that means working on a number of fixes that should hopefully resolve this issue.

So, without wasting any more time, let's get down to business.

Note. You must manually create a backup after each patch. The easiest way to do this is to find and access iCloud using Siri Spotlight Search, tap iCloud Backup on the next screen, and then tap Back Up Now. Read also: Safari Open PDF in iBooks missing from iOS 11: here's how to find it

Check connection

iOS 11 backups require a Wi-Fi connection, and a strong one at that - ideally you should have a full Wi-Fi meter. There is a known issue where iOS software updates won't download simply because the Wi-Fi connection counter is half full, so don't expect backups to be protected from anything like this. So consider moving closer to your Wi-Fi router and establishing a good connection.

While doing this, also consider disabling and reconnecting Wi-Fi. Often your connection may just freeze for no reason, and doing this will do wonders in fixing the situation. Just swipe up from the bottom of the screen and double-tap the Wi-Fi icon to make it happen.

You can resolve connection problems by resetting your network settings. Please note that you will need to manually re-add Wi-Fi networks, as well as reconfigure any other changed network settings after the reset. Find and open Reset Network Settings using Siri Spotlight Search, then tap Reset Network Settings to perform a full network reset.

Try starting a backup. Was it completed successfully? If not, move on.

Reboot your device

iOS 11 isn't completely immune to common technical glitches, and there's nothing like a hard restart to clear things up.

To restart your iPhone or iPad, press and hold the power button until the "Slide to Power Off" prompt appears. After your device turns off, press and hold the Power button again to turn it on again.

The iPhone X uses a slightly different shutdown procedure, which requires you to quickly press and release the volume up and down buttons. Once you do this, immediately press the Power button to bring up the "slide to power off" prompt.

If restarting the device did not allow the backup process to complete normally, continue.

Enable/Disable iCloud Backup

Since restarting the iOS device did not solve the problem, it may simply be a problem with iCloud Backup being faulty. The fix involves turning iCloud Backup on and off, after which the backup should run fine.

Step 1.

Step 2: Scroll down and tap iCloud Backup.

Step 3: Click the switch next to iCloud Backup to turn it off. In the pop-up window, click "OK" to confirm your actions.

Step 4. Wait ten seconds, and then tap the switch next to iCloud Backup to turn it back on. Click OK again on the confirmation pop-up window.

Step 5: Click "Backup Now" to perform a new backup.

Hopefully you should now see that the entire backup completed successfully. If you are still receiving the error message “Some files were not available during the last backup,” let's move on to the next fix.

Sign out and come back to iCloud

The latest fix focused on iCloud Backup glitches and how turning the option on and off might resolve the issue. Since that didn't work, let's take it one step further and log out completely and go back to iCloud. Hopefully this will fix any remaining glitches and other anomalies associated with iCloud Backup.

If signing out of your iPhone or iPad deletes a certain amount of data, such as contacts associated with your account, you don't need to worry because all the deleted items are synced when you sign in again.

Step 1. On the Settings screen, tap your profile name and then tap Sign Out.

Step 2. Insert your Apple ID password when prompted to turn off Find My iPhone/iPad.

Step 3: Click "Sign Out" in both pop-ups. Wait a while for locally cached account data to be removed from your iPad.

Step 4. Return to iCloud using the Sign in to your iPhone/iPad option in the Settings screen.

Step 5: Click "Merge" in the prompts that appear to complete your iCloud sign-in.

After logging in, try running the update. If you still can't complete it successfully, it's time to get a little serious.

Delete previous backups

There are numerous complaints popping up on forums that previous backup files actually conflict with iOS when trying to create new backups, hence the infamous "Some files were not available during the last backup" error. If this is the case, then deleting the old backup should fix the situation.

Warning. Deleting an existing backup creates the risk of losing all data in the event of a sudden hardware failure. If you have access to iTunes, try creating a backup on your PC or Mac first before attempting to fix this.

Step 1. On the Settings screen, tap your name and then tap iCloud.

Step 2. In the Storage section, click Manage Storage.

Step 3. On the iCloud Storage screen, tap Backups.

Step 4. Under Backups, tap your iOS device.

Step 5. Scroll down and then click "Delete Backup". Click "Uninstall" in the "Turn Off and Uninstall" pop-up window. iOS should now delete any existing backup file from iCloud.

Step 6. Deleting a backup also automatically disables iCloud Backup. Go to the iCloud Backup screen and then tap the switch next to iCloud Backup to turn it back on.

Now tap the Back up now option to start and complete a new backup. This time, your backup has a huge chance of completing successfully.
