Difference between iPhone 5 and 5s 5c. How to distinguish between iPhone generations

In the fall of 2013, Apple presented the world with a new line of smartphones - the iPhone 5S and 5C models, significantly improved compared to the previous ones. More than 3 years have passed since then, and these devices still remain competitive and occupy the minds of users. And those who have not yet managed to acquire fifth-generation iPhones are trying to choose the best option for themselves by comparing the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C.

What are the differences between them, and which phone is the best - iPhone 5C or 5S, we will compare in our review. A comparative description will show in which areas both versions of gadgets are 100% similar, and in which areas they are radically different, so that you can make the right choice in favor of a specific model.

What is the difference between iPhone 5S and 5C in appearance?

Let's look at how the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S differ from the appearance, i.e. from the design of the case, color schemes of both devices, etc.

The first thing that even the most inattentive buyer pays attention to is the size of the device. After all, the user immediately imagines where he will carry his smartphone. if in the back pocket of your trousers, you will have to choose a model of miniature dimensions in order to feel comfortable. True, in this case you will have to sacrifice a large screen.

The iPhone 5C is slightly thicker across the board than the iPhone 5S. However, the first model, compared to the second, is budget. It is also made from a material such as plastic. This is the fundamental difference between 5C and 5S. Plastic, as a material, is always thicker than aluminum, from which the body of the fifth smartphone, version S, is made.

The difference between the iPhone S and 5C variants is also weight. As a rule, mobile device cases made of aluminum weigh slightly less than their plastic counterparts. Therefore, smartphones made of different materials will always differ in weight. All this applies to the iPhone models in question.

What is better in terms of color solutions - 5C or 5S - is ultimately up to the user to decide. It should only be noted that with this line of smartphones, Apple has significantly diversified the color palette of its devices, for the first time releasing devices in other colors, and not just black and white. The 5S model comes in silver, gold and gray colors. And its more budget option comes in a whole range of colors from white to yellow and pink, as well as others. Of course, many young people could not ignore such cheerful new products. Actually, this version of the smartphone was mainly intended for this category of users.

In addition to everything mentioned above, the manufacturer has provided special-purpose cases for its new 5-series products, which should protect the devices from careless handling. For the 5S version of the phone, the cases are made of genuine leather. At the same time, the buttons are covered with elements of the case, but this does not interfere with pressing them.

For the 5C line of trendy bright colors, the company has released the same bright cases. They are made with large round holes, and some parts on the sides are open. This approach made it possible to create more than 30 different shades from accessories of 6 colors. Therefore, each user who purchased the same smartphone with the same case ended up with a gadget that was different from the others, which made it possible to create an individual style.

Version S received a home button from the manufacturer, which began to act as biometric protection. A special sensor (fingerprint) is placed in the surface of the button, which reliably protects the device from unauthorized access. I must say, this innovation has especially pleased those who fear for the safety of data stored in their smartphone. Moreover, to use the technology, the user does not need to enter any passwords; just touch the button with a finger.

Photo and video characteristics

The camera resolution of both gadgets is the same. And it is 8 MP. Both cameras have a 5-element lens as a component. All this speaks in favor of both iPhone models. Indeed, as has been noted more than once by active users of both versions of the five, the pictures taken from their cameras come out excellent.

Unlike the usual five, the newest devices have improved characteristics such as:

  • Noise reduction function.
  • True Tone is now controlled by the flash.
  • A panoramic shooting mode has been added.

In addition, the more expensive model comes with a pixel size of 1.5 microns. Because of this, the quality of the images has improved significantly. The aperture was also increased, which made it possible to achieve an increase in sensitivity to light by more than 30%.

Among the innovations in both versions of smartphones, one can also note improved stabilization, face recognition, the presence of scene filters, and the ability to record the coordinates of the place where the frame was taken.

The front camera is designed with a resolution of 1.2 megapixels. The quality of video shooting made with its help is 720p HD. This is a pretty good indicator. The video quality is normal and is enough for communicating on social networks. Actually, this was the purpose of the front camera.

iPhone 5 C and 5S display comparison

The Retina screen built into the body of the previous model was so popular with users that the manufacturer did not invent anything here and left it in the new line of its devices. The matrix also remained 4 inches in size.

What's good about this display? Its main advantages are the following:

  • Natural paints.
  • Natural shades.
  • No glare even in very bright lighting.
  • The presence of impact-resistant glass.
  • Protects against leaving fingerprints on the screen.

Performance of iPhones 5 C and 5S

Unlike other characteristics, devices differ significantly according to these criteria. So, the budget smartphone has the Apple A6 installed. It was also present in the previous model, but the manufacturer emphasized at the official presentation of the product that some changes were made that could affect the performance of the gadget for the better. According to reviews from iPhone 5 C users, this is exactly what happened.

The benefits of the 5 Cs in terms of productivity, according to users, are as follows:

  • Increased speed of the device.
  • Clearer images in multimedia applications.
  • Reduced energy consumption.

The iPhone 5S, on the other hand, saw dramatic changes. For the first time, a 64-bit architecture was used in a smartphone and the A8 chip was introduced. All this made it possible to increase the performance of the device by 100%, while reducing energy consumption.

The 5S’s “filling” also includes the M7 coprocessor, which relieves the workload of the A6 and helps improve the efficiency of the device as a whole.

Testing audio quality

Both one and the second iPhone model retained the same audio quality as in the previous device – the usual five. Both gadgets have 3 built-in microphones, which effectively suppresses noise and improves the clarity of sounds when pronouncing words.

The speakers built into the case produce music and speech in very high quality. This is confirmed by numerous users of the Five S and Five C.

What's new in batteries?

According to this indicator, the characteristics of both phones are 100% identical. As noted above, as a result of improved processors (and in the case of the Five S, the introduction of a new version of the processor), the power consumption of devices has been greatly reduced. What did this give in practice? First of all, the possibility of using devices for a longer time without recharging, namely:

  • The call period in 3 G networks is about 10 hours.
  • Standby time – 250 hours.
  • Active navigation on the Internet – up to 8 hours.

As a connector for the power cord, as in the previous model, Lightning is included with both devices - convenient and comfortable due to its small size and the ability to be reversibly connected.

To summarize: comparison table

In the above review of the iPhone 5C or 5S, a lot was said about the similarities and differences between these Apple smartphone models. Table. The following brings all the information together and systematizes it. It briefly and clearly indicates the main characteristics of the devices, and it is easy to navigate which of the gadgets is superior to its “brother” in one or another parameter.

Comparative characteristics of iPhones 5Sand 5C –table:

From the above comparative table it can be seen that the differences between the 2 models considered are not so significant. The main difference is in performance characteristics - in particular, in differences in processor versions.

This year has been a special one for Apple. For the first time, the company introduced not one, but two new iPhones: the austere, expensive iPhone 5S and the more affordable iPhone 5C. Apple for the first time moved away from the usual color schemes for smartphones, and also for the first time used a fingerprint scanner in the design of one of them. The company was the first in the world to use a mobile processor with 64-bit architecture. In addition, the iOS operating system, which received the number 7 and which we had prepared earlier, has undergone major changes. At the same time, the older iPhone 5S did not receive an enlarged screen, and the design of the device, along with its dimensions and materials, remained virtually unchanged, while the iPhone 5C turned out to be not as affordable a solution as was expected of it. However, both devices are among the best examples of modern smartphones and are clearly Apple's best phones to date, but not without reservations.

Video review and unboxing

Design, construction and equipment

Both smartphones arrived for testing at the same time, and even with branded cases. You could already watch the unboxing of the device and read the first look at the new products. Apple iPhone 5C is packaged in a packaging familiar from the iPod touch with a transparent top. It consists of an upper part that contains a smartphone, and a lower part that includes EarPods, a Lightning cable and a charger (1A). Here you can also find a branded Liquidmetal clip for removing the nanoSIM stand from the slot, a description of the device’s control elements, documentation and two stickers in the shape of a branded bitten apple. The packaging of the iPhone 5S is no different from the iPhone 5 and is a cardboard box in polyethylene, inside of which there is the same thing, only all the pieces of paper and a paper clip are packed in an envelope.

As you remember, the Apple iPhone 5C is a slightly improved (in terms of the front camera, support for network frequencies and battery) version of the iPhone 5 in a multi-colored plastic case, while the 5S is a more advanced device that has all the latest developments of the company.

The exterior of the devices is familiar and familiar, the differences lie only in the case materials, the modified Home button in the iPhone 5S and thickness. On the front side there is a 4" Retina display with a resolution of 1136x640 pixels (326 ppi). It is made using IPS technology and has all the features characteristic of such screens: excellent viewing angles, high contrast and saturation, color inversion at tilts and large angles. Brightness the screen is very high, there are no problems with readability under bright sun. The screen of the iPhone 5S looks a little better than the 5C: the white color is whiter, the color rendition is better. Today, this screen size can hardly be called optimal and modern, but for some people, even such a display is suitable. according to some of my friends who encountered the iPhone for the first time, it may seem too large, and we are not talking about children or girls. Not everyone needs large smartphones, but personally, for my hand, the optimal minimum size is 4.7", even though it is my main device. device with a 6.44" screen. Motorola has successfully proven with its Moto X that fitting a 4.7" screen into a body almost the size of an iPhone 5S or 5C is not particularly difficult, so I see no reason why such a display may not be in the next iPhone. The current iPhone screen is already too small for modern top games with cool graphics (they are much more pleasant to look at on the Retina screens of the iPad Air and Mini), as well as advanced multimedia applications (both third-party and Apple branded), Internet surfing and reading books . For purely telephone functions, messaging, communicating on social networks, taking photos or videos, it is perfect.

Above the display there is a front 1.2 camera, a speaker and a light sensor. Below the screen is the traditional Home button. In the iPhone 5S, it became tighter and tougher, but acquired the most convenient fingerprint scanner in the world (more on that below) and sapphire crystal. This is not a tribute to fashion or image, but, first of all, an extremely practical solution. This glass is scratch-resistant and makes fingerprint scanning more accurate and of higher quality.

The right side of the smartphones is given over to the nanoSIM slot, while the left side houses the volume buttons and a slider for blocking sound or auto-rotating the screen. At the bottom end you can see the proprietary Lightning connector, microphone and multimedia speaker. At the top end there is a power button. At the back there is an 8-megapixel camera, microphone and flash. In the iPhone 5S, the camera was improved and the flash became double, but we'll talk about this in the Camera section.

The plastic iPhone 5C is 1.37 mm thicker, 0.6 mm longer and wider, and also 20 grams heavier than the metal iPhone 5S, and this is done for a reason. While maintaining the same thinness and lightness, the iPhone 5C would feel like a toy and cheap in the hand, but thanks to the metal frame on the inside and a thick layer of polycarbonate, the new product managed to meet all the necessary parameters to make the device feel like a worthwhile and high-quality thing, and not a plastic rattle. In terms of feel and materials, the smartphone resembles the best representatives of the Lumia line from Nokia, which distinguishes the iPhone 5C from Korean smartphones from Samsung and partly from LG. The same Galaxy Note 3 with its plastic skin does not feel like a smartphone worth 35,000 rubles, and MegaFon’s price tag of 22,000 rubles seems adequate for it. The Apple iPhone 5C feels like it costs 25,000, but this cannot be judged without holding the smartphones in your hands and comparing them with each other. Similar emotions are evoked, for example, by the Meizu MX3, thanks to the metal heat sink frame and durable frame. Many acquaintances who were very skeptical about the iPhone 5C because of the plastic instantly changed their opinion to a much more positive one as soon as they managed to hold it.

Apple iPhone 5C is available for sale in several colors: white, pink, yellow, blue, green. I got a yellow one for the test, but the most popular of them is considered to be blue, although it is more blue in color. Such a wealth of colors is aimed primarily at a young and female audience, but I personally know one adult man (straight orientation) who dreamed of a green iPhone. Not long ago I met another grown man talking on a blue iPhone 5C. There were definitely buyers for the model, but their number was significantly less than those who wanted to own the iPhone 5S and preferably in golden color. This coloring in person makes a much more pleasant impression than you would expect from it. A truly noble shade, rather beige with a hint of champagne color than vulgar and vulgar gold. The silver-white color scheme, in which the test 5S is made, looks more boring than other colors, it blurs more and scratches faster, but there are plenty of its fans. The most popular color is Space Gray. Both devices have only one complaint regarding build quality: knocking in the camera area when shaking or small movements. This has happened before - this is the fault of the autofocus mechanism, but it is somehow unusual to feel such a trinket in a device for 30,000 rubles, especially when competitors no longer have this.

After two weeks of active use, the devices did not peel off, did not crumble, did not turn into a pile of twisted metal and obscene plastic worn to holes. The Apple iPhone 5S acquired a small scratch on the shiny logo, and several unnoticeable small scratches appeared on the body and screen of the iPhone 5C. Unfortunately, the test iPhone 5S showed a screen defect that manifested itself in a noticeable tapping and squelching sound when you pressed it. This is detected when the screen is warm enough - on a cool display everything is fine. As soon as you purposefully poke him with your fingers harder for a few seconds, the squelching begins. This also happens to other users with devices from different parts of the world, so if a defect is discovered, it is better to immediately contact the service center. At times, an incomprehensible play in the Home button also appeared, similar to the squelching of the screen, but independent of temperature. The problems are not widespread, but if they appear, it is better to immediately take your smartphone to a specialist (we remind you that Apple’s iPhone does not have a worldwide warranty).

The branded cases, which were also tested, were in excellent condition, but only because I hardly used them. You don’t want to put the metallic and lightweight 5S in a noticeably thicker, albeit leather (although they go well together) case, and the leaky polyurethane case, reminiscent of a colander, for the 5C is very much for an amateur and deprives the device of a pleasant streamlinedness, simultaneously making it heavier. By the way, it is thanks to this sleekness that the iPhone 5C can be called much more convenient and ergonomic, however, due to the slippery gloss, the chance of accidentally dropping the device is much higher than the metal 5S.

Software

Both devices run the iOS 7 operating system, at the time of writing this review it is 7.0.4. All features of the system were discussed in detail in a separate material (link) using the iPad mini as an example. The telephone version of the system is not very different, and the differences between the iPhones come down to hardware differences (an improved A7 chip with an assistant in the form of an M7, a more advanced camera with new capabilities, a fingerprint scanner).

The version of the system for iPhone pleases with the almost universal implementation of the return gesture (swipe from the left edge to the right). Now there is no need at all to reach for the Back arrow in the upper left corner. This innovation clearly shows Apple's desire to prepare users for larger iPhone sizes. You instantly get used to this gesture, and you want to use it on all other devices, but, alas, not all manufacturers have thought of this.

The amount of third-party software adapted for the new iOS 7 is growing and the system already feels much more holistic than at the time of release. Apple's proprietary applications also received a redesign and optimization for the 64-bit A7 chip, and the iWork (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) and iLife (Garage band, iPhoto and iMovie) packages generally became free for all owners of the company's new smartphones and tablets. The text of this review was written in Pages on the iPad Air and slightly edited and supplemented on the computer.

Alas, despite almost seven beta versions and already four additions, iOS 7 cannot boast of ideal operating stability. For no apparent reason, for example, Safari may freeze. There are also crashes from programs and poor performance in applications.

Due to numerous animations, the new system at times seems overly slow, and even reducing movement in the universal settings does not help the situation much - everything becomes faster, but this is not the level of top Android with Snapdragon 800 and Full HD resolution (2.85 times higher than iPhone, by the way). At the same time, in games and tests everything is fine with performance and speed, so the complaint is about excessive animation. Fortunately, in 7.1 beta this point was seriously improved, but there is still room for improvement - the speed of work is never enough.

Sensors

As already mentioned, the main difference between the iPhone 5S and 5C, in addition to the new A7 chipset, is the M7 coprocessor and a fingerprint scanner built into a modified Home button coated with sapphire glass. It is these two elements that seriously transform the usual experience of using the Apple iPhone and give a completely new feeling from the device. Let's start with the scanner.

When you turn on your device for the first time, during the initial setup process, you will be asked to scan one or more fingers and reinforce the protection with your usual password. When scanning, you need to apply your finger several times and preferably at different angles (pad, tip, half-side, and so on). This will allow you to unlock the device in the most convenient way in the future. To unlock the screen, it is no longer necessary to press the power button on the top panel - just a slightly longer than usual press on the Home button is enough. If the screen is on, then you don’t have to press the button at all - just placing your finger on it is enough. Unlocking is fast and crashes are very rare. Sometimes the system may ask you to enter a digital password. For example, if a finger was not counted several times, the device was turned off or rebooted, and so on. The system has generally become more secure and, in the event of suspicious activity, it may ask not only for the password for the phone, but also for the password for the Apple ID account (for example, when deleting data). The second most useful area for using the scanner was confirming purchases in the App Store or iTunes. You don’t need to enter anything, just one touch and the required file is downloaded to the device’s memory. Apple guarantees the confidentiality of fingerprints processed. They are stored in encrypted mathematical form in the depths of the A7 processor (that is, there are no images of your fingers in the form of pictures), where no third-party program can access, and it is impossible to turn the data into an image of a finger. Even company employees will not be able to decrypt your data. I would really like to believe this, in fact. Moreover, the tool turned out to be so convenient that you get used to it instantly. Yes, no one forces you to use the scanner and you don’t have to turn it on at all, but if you have previously encountered similar devices in commercial products (laptops, phones, smartphones), then you simply must try the Apple scanner and understand that no one else in the world has made this thing so cool and convenient.

The second significant feature was the dedicated M7 assistant processor. It monitors your physical activity and movements around the clock, collecting data from the gyroscope, accelerometer and other things in the background, without affecting autonomy. The appearance of the M7 chip in the iPhone renders most smart bracelets that perform a similar task useless. More and more sports software is acquiring M7 support. I can personally recommend the Argus program. It is very simple, functional and intuitive, and the design is made in the best traditions of iOS 7. This is exactly how (and how the new Tweetbot) programs should look in iOS 7 style. I came across information on the Internet that M7 helps the iPhone 5S better navigate in space and, for example, not waste power searching for a network in a place where signal reception is terrible. In practice, I didn’t notice anything like this, but perhaps I wasn’t looking carefully :)

Camera

Both smartphones are equipped with 8-megapixel cameras with autofocus and flash, but the iPhone 5S has increased the pixel size and aperture, and the optics have become wide-angle. Plus, it adds dual LED flash with different tints to ensure the best photo in poor conditions. In practice, the difference between the devices in photo and video quality is barely noticeable in good conditions, but in other cases the 5S is able to provide better photos and greater light capture. Because of this, some night shots turn out to be much lighter than they really are (Lumia disease). Interestingly, similar shots on the iPhone 5C sometimes turn out much more realistic and closer to the real view, but are too noisy for a good photo. In the examples below, the iPhone 5S is always on the left, in panoramas it is always on the top.

Performance and tests

The Apple iPhone 5C is based on the 32nm A6 chipset, which includes a dual-core 1.3-GHz Apple proprietary processor using elements of the Cortex-A9 and A15 architectures, as well as a three-core PowerVR SGX543MP3 graphics accelerator. The amount of RAM is 1 GB. This chip was first used in the iPhone 5, so it migrated to the 5C without changes. The chipset's performance is more than enough for comfortable operation of all applications and the iOS 7 system, while the graphical power is still optimal for most new demanding games. The only parameter by which this chip can be considered obsolete is the 32-nm manufacturing process, which is no longer capable of maintaining the best autonomy of the device. The iPhone 5S uses the latest Apple A7 chipset, which is the world's first commercially available mobile 64-bit ARM chip. It has twice the performance of the A6 chip, is manufactured on a 28nm process, uses the ARMv8 instruction set and is equipped with Imagination Technologies' latest and most advanced graphics adapter - the PowerVR G6430. RAM remained 1 GB. Many spears have already been broken around the topic of the feasibility of using 64-bit processors in mobile devices: some believe that this is marketing and without increasing the size of RAM to 4 GB there will be no practical benefit, while others, on the contrary, see this as one one of the main innovations of recent years. So why does the iPhone 5S need a 64-bit processor?

No one is surprised by the weight of mobile games, which are rapidly approaching the 2 GB standard, and in the near future the space they occupy in device memory will grow in proportion to the growth of graphic capabilities and functions. It is for this purpose that the use of such a processor makes sense, since this entire huge array of data will be processed more quickly. In addition, this is a huge foundation for the future, when Apple mobile technology grows to require the use of 4 GB of RAM, which will also have a positive effect on performance. But another key and not the most obvious advantage of using such a chip in Apple smartphones and tablets is bringing it into a form similar to desktop systems to simplify the development of applications for both platforms, which in the near future will allow you to use the same programs as on the iPhone/iPad. and MacBook or iMac, without the need for additional conversion or adaptation. The Apple ecosystem is always famous for high-quality and convenient software, so the introduction of a 64-bit chip makes sense and practical benefits, plus it gives developers the opportunity to start optimizing their products for future Apple chips right now.

In practice, the situation with performance is as follows: where the iPhone 5C falters, the 5S confidently performs. This is noticeable, for example, when using a camera, video editing programs or working with sound. In games, the difference is not always noticeable. In some places the loading is a little faster, in others the rendering is a little faster, but in the future the difference will become more and more noticeable. Of course, this is a merit not so much of 64-bit, but of more powerful hardware in general.

According to the benchmark results, the iPhone 5C shows itself as follows: Geekbench 3 - 712/1283, 3D Mark - 5857/3263/5662, GFXBench - 6.8/13/6.8/14/30/37 fps, AnTuTu 3D Rating - 11828/ 2620.

Apple iPhone 5S shows the following results: Geekbench 3 - 1417/2567, 3D Mark - Maxed Out!/Maxed Out!/13982, GFXBench - 27/37/25/36/64/53 fps, AnTuTu 3D Rating - 13665/5046.

As you can see, the difference is very noticeable. The advantage in Geekbench in favor of the 5S is exactly those two times; the test itself was also completed by the device twice as fast as on the 5C. According to the 3D Mark results, a twofold and even in some places a threefold increase in performance and speed of passing tests is also noticeable. The difference between the first two results in GFXBench in favor of 5S (and these are the most difficult graphics tests) is simply terrifying. The potential for future gaming opportunities is colossal.

In the case of games, the situation is as follows: the graphical differences are currently minimal or non-existent. Even with Infinity Blade 3 optimized for iOS 7 and 64-bit, everything looks equally great on both the 5C and 5S. The difference at the moment is only in the loading speed - it is 5S faster everywhere. I would also like to say something about heating. Both devices get quite noticeably warm when playing games and using applications, but thanks to the plastic body, the 5C feels barely warm, while the metal 5S sometimes turns into a hot frying pan. A cover or case will be your salvation.

Based on autonomy tests, we can say that the 5S performs one and a half times better than the 5C. If, with active use, the latter is unlikely to survive until the evening (from the morning and until 15-16 - quite), then with the first there is no need to worry about this. In HD video playback mode, both smartphones can last up to 10 hours at maximum brightness and volume (discharge is 10-12% per hour) (relevant only for hardware-supported formats, otherwise playback will be software-based with high power consumption). This is especially surprising if you remember the battery capacity: 1510 mAh for the 5C and 1570 mAh for the 5S. Competitors based on Android with one and a half to two times more capacious batteries often cannot boast of such indicators. Yes, iPhone screen sizes are smaller and their resolution is lower, the system is more optimized, and so on, but the result is still amazing. In the case of games, both devices are discharged at maximum brightness by 25-30% per hour, which will give a total of about 3.5-4 hours of games.

There are no complaints about the telephone functions. LTE support will appear in Russian iPhones soon, after all quality of service issues between operators and Apple are resolved. The sound quality in headphones (both expensive and simple) is traditionally beyond praise. In this regard, both one and the other iPhone are good, there is no difference in quality, and the battery charge will last for 40 hours of listening to music.

conclusions

The start of sales of new iPhones took place in most countries of the world and has long affected Russia. The devices are offered at prices starting from 24,990 rubles for the basic version of the iPhone 5C with 16 GB of memory and 29,990 rubles for the 5S in a similar configuration. Due to exchange rates, Russian prices (including, by the way, VAT in the amount of several thousand rubles) were even lower than some European ones, which, of course, cannot but rejoice. According to various reports, the iPhone 5S was warmly received by the mass buyer, but the 5C was much cooler, whose sales are worse (however, in Moscow, I increasingly see people with colored 5C, not 5S). Why did this happen? Traditionally, many are accustomed to purchasing a new iPhone because it is usually better than the previous one in everything. In the case of the 5S, the same cannot be said about the screen size and materials (although the durability of the coating has improved), but otherwise we are looking at a truly new iPhone with numerous improvements and several innovative solutions. In addition, the appearance of a new golden color provoked an increased demand for the model among those who want to stand out and announce to the whole world that they have a new expensive toy.

Apple iPhone 5C remains the same iPhone 5 in a new case with minor improvements (front panel, frequencies, battery). Yes, thanks to competent and high-quality execution, it feels as cool and new as the 5S, but many expected a more affordable price from the device (in Russia - at the level of 20,000 rubles) and the expectations of buyers were not met. At a price of 25,000, I would like to get a device similar to the 5S, and the price tag would be determined by a simpler body. As a result, the model can only be recommended to those who, for some reason, did not buy the iPhone 5, have wanted a cool, bright iPhone without any cases all their life, or do not see much point in switching to the iPhone 5S with the same screen and body as the 5, but with wants to play with something new from Apple. The phone will be an excellent gift as the first iPhone for a child, teenager or girlfriend: it is cute, bright, comfortable, it makes it easy to stand out in the crowd, and in terms of materials it is better than most plastic products from competitors. The autonomy of the device is not the best, the speed of operation in some applications is also poor, there is little “hardware” for future new high-quality games and more advanced software - these are, perhaps, the main disadvantages of the device.

The Apple iPhone 5S is in a different league and is designed for those who want the best iPhone Apple has ever created. The fingerprint scanner, the additional M7 processor and the powerful A7 give a lot of pleasant impressions of use and they can really become a good reason to switch from the iPhone 5 to the new flagship. The only criticisms are the small size of the screen, which is no longer very suitable for top modern games and comfortable consumption of content, and, perhaps, the heating of the metal case. In terms of better suitability for top games, browsing and content consumption, the smartphone has a cosmic number of competitors from the Android camp with huge screens. On the other hand, few smartphones can boast such a wonderful fusion of design, materials, high-quality music player, good photo and video camera, and there are simply no compact Android flagships on sale with comparable characteristics yet.

. “In a nutshell,” the difference between them is usually described as follows: externally, the new product is exactly like the old gadget, but inside it has already powerful hardware from the iPhone 6s. But is it? After all, the devil, as we know, is in the details...

Dimensions and weight

The dimensions and weight of the 5s and SE are the same - 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm, but the weight... the new Apple smartphone has one gram more :). 113 versus 112. An “extra” gram in real life, of course, is more of a joke than a disadvantage - hardly anyone will seriously notice it.

Video review:

Design and available colors

Externally, the 4-inch iPhone SE is a complete copy of the iPhone 5s. Moreover, iFixit experts came to the conclusion that many components of the iPhone SE are completely identical to those of the iPhone 5s.

Experts installed a display from the iPhone 5s in the iPhone SE and found that the old display not only fit seamlessly into the body of the new device, but also worked perfectly in conjunction with the other components.

Initially, the iPhone 5s was available in three colors: space gray, gold and silver (with the release of the iPhone 6s, the “gold” version of the 5s disappeared from retail).

In the iPhone SE, Apple retained the previous 3 colors and added one new one to them - “rose gold”.

CPU

iPhone SE received the Apple A9 chip, which is also installed in the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. According to Apple itself, it is 2 times more productive than the A7 chip installed in the iPhone 5s, and 3 times faster than its predecessor in processing graphics. The M9 coprocessor is also much more powerful than the M7 - thanks to interaction with sensors (compass, gyroscope and accelerometer), it allows you to collect more fitness data (steps, kilometers, etc.). iPhone SE's Hey Siri feature works without being connected to a power source.

RAM

The iPhone SE has 2 gigabytes of RAM, while the iPhone 5s has only one. You feel the difference very quickly - for example, an “extra” gigabyte of RAM allows you to instantly access long-forgotten tabs in Safari, without first loading them via the Internet.

Storage device

iPhone SE comes in only two versions - with 16 and 64 GB storage. iPhone 5s, in turn, was produced in three versions - 16, 32 and 64 GB.

Cameras

The iPhone SE received a 12 megapixel iSight camera with an f/2.2 aperture. For comparison, the iPhone 5s was equipped with a photo module of only 8 megapixels (the aperture is the same). The old iPhone seriously lags behind the new one in terms of functionality - unlike the SE, 5s

  • does not record video in 4K resolution or at 240 frames per second (slow motion);
  • does not take panoramic photos in resolutions up to 63 megapixels;
  • Does not take Live Photos.

But the front camera of FaceTime on both smartphones is equally “antediluvian” - only 1.2 megapixels. And if in the case of the iPhone 5s this can somehow be explained, then the iPhone SE has nothing to cover - it is obvious that Apple (apparently in pursuit of a low price) saved money here. True, even on this “front” the SE has one advantage - Apple engineers equipped it with the Retina Flash function (when taking a selfie in poor lighting conditions, the screen acts as a flash).

LTE (4G)

iPhone SE offers 50% faster Internet access (if technically possible) - up to 150 Mbps versus 100 Mbps for iPhone 5s. Unfortunately, these capabilities of the iPhone SE cannot be called an advantage in Russian realities.

By the way, it’s worth paying attention: according to official data, the SE is offered in two models, the first of which, A1662, does not support the 7th LTE band, popular in Russia. The version with number A1723 does not have such problems.

Working hours

Thanks to the energy-efficient 3rd generation 64-bit processor and small screen, the iPhone SE lasts noticeably longer than the 5s. Apple notes that when browsing the Internet via 4G or Wi-Fi, the battery of the new iPhone will last 13 hours, while playing music – up to 50 hours. Under the same conditions, the iPhone 5s will only last 10 and 40 hours, respectively. As you can see, the “survivability” of the battery has increased by 25-30%. Impressive!

Cross-platform frameworks provide mobile app developers with a comprehensive set of tools designed to improve productivity by solving common problems. The question is which frameworks are best for you doing mobile development. To help you answer this question, we have prepared a special list of cross-platform frameworks for developing high-quality mobile applications.

Developing a mobile application using a cross-platform framework is a shorter path to successfully completing the task.

With nearly three million apps on Google Play, the Android operating system dominates the mobile landscape. Individuals, small companies and large enterprises are working hard to establish a strong mobile presence and capture market share. However, not everyone has the proper experience and resources needed to create a good mobile application from scratch using native tools.

The goal of frameworks is to make mobile app development as easy as possible.

List of cross-platform application development frameworks:

- Corona SDK;

Is it easy to create applications and games using Corona SDK? The creators of the Corona SDK framework promise ten times faster development of games and mobile applications. How is this even possible? This is likely due to the fact that the internal structure of the Corona application is entirely based on Lua, a lightweight multi-paradigmatic programming language with an emphasis on speed, portability, extensibility and ease of use.

The official Corona SDK website contains guides, lessons, and examples designed to turn novice mobile application developers into experienced professionals. Guides and tips cover all sorts of developer topics. From the basics of mobile development to more advanced topics. The Corona SDK framework is absolutely free. We remember about cross-platform. It runs on both Windows and Mac OS X and supports real-time application testing.

- TheAppBuilder;

So, description TheAppBuilder is a framework used by some of the largest organizations in the world, equipped with a user interface to speed up the development of application code. There are reviews that the version works best when used to create company presentations and other information applications. The framework comes with ready-made blocks for push notifications, feedback, surveys, content updates, analytics and much more. Best of all, TheAppBuilder integrates directly with Google Play, allowing you to publish ready-made apps with one click.

- Xamarin;

The Xamarin framework was developed by the same people who created Mono, compatible with the ECMA standard, and has a set of tools compatible with the .NET Framework. Xamarin offers developers a single C# codebase that they can use to create their own apps for all major mobile operating systems.

Unlike many other frameworks, Xamarin has already been used by more than 1.4 million developers around the world. With Xamarin for Visual Studio, developers can take advantage of the power of Microsoft Visual Studio and all its advanced features, including code completion, IntelliSense, and app debugging on a simulator or mobile device. The Xamarin Test Cloud feature allows you to instantly test applications on up to 2,000 real devices in the cloud (remotely, via the Internet). This is by far the best way to deal with the severe fragmentation of the Android ecosystem and release bug-free mobile apps that run without any major issues on most gadgets.

- Appcelerator Titanium;

The Appcelerator Titanium framework is part of the Appcelerator Platform, which includes all the tools mobile app developers need to build, test, and deploy highly optimized apps. The Titanium framework uses JavaScript to call a vast collection of APIs. These APIs call native functions of the operating systems, providing exceptional performance and a natural appearance.

Titanium includes a visually oriented mobile app development process that relies heavily on pre-built code blocks that can be assembled via drag and drop. You can create data models programmatically or visually. Test your finished mobile apps in the cloud and track them with the Mobile Lifecycle dashboard, which provides valuable insight into app performance.

- PhoneGap;

PhoneGap from Adobe is one of the world's most popular frameworks for developing Android applications. It is created by the Apache Cordova development team. An open source mobile application development environment that uses CSS3 and HTML5, as well as JavaScript for cross-platform development. PhoneGap is also completely open source software.

It is based on an intuitive desktop application used to create applications and connect these applications to mobile devices (phones/smartphones, tablets). Finally, no more obscure text commands that are easy to get wrong and hard to remember. The fantastic desktop app is complemented by the PhoneGap mobile app. The application allows you to instantly see changes on your connected mobile device. Other things that make PhoneGap so recommended are its large library of plugins, third-party tools, and thriving community.

- Ionic;

Ionic is a free and open source framework licensed under the MIT license. It offers a whole library of components and tools. Ionic allows you to develop progressive web apps and native mobile apps for every major app store - all from a single codebase. Thanks to the best native plugins, it's extremely easy to use features like Bluetooth and Health Kit, and fingerprint authentication is also supported.

Ionic is also designed for performance tuning and optimization. All applications built using Ionic look like they are standardized and they work equally well. To date, nearly four million applications have been created by five million Ionic developers around the world. If you want to join them, visit the official website and learn more about this framework.

- NativeScript;

JavaScript and Angular, as well as TypeScript, are perhaps the most commonly used web development technologies. With the NativeScript framework, you can also use them to create applications. Simply put, NativeScript creates platform-specific user interfaces from a single code base. Unlike other integrated frameworks, NativeScript is supported by Telerik, a Bulgarian company that offers various software tools.

Do you need lessons on creating mobile applications in the cross-platform NativeScript framework? To help mobile app developers become familiar with this framework, the official website provides many examples and detailed tutorials. You can view real implementations of mobile applications, study official documentation, and even dive into the source code.

- React Native;

React Native is developed by Facebook and used by Instagram, Tesla, Airbnb, Baidu, Walmart and many other Fortune 500 companies. Facebook's React JavaScript framework is open source. Since React Native uses the same UI building blocks as regular mobile apps for iOS and Android gadgets, it is impossible to differentiate a React Native app from an app built using Objective-C or Java. Once you update the source code, you will immediately see the changes in the application preview window. If you ever feel the need to manually optimize certain parts of your application, React Native allows you to combine native code with components written in Swift or Objective-C and Java.

- Sencha Touch.

Sencha Touch what is it? Like TheAppBuilder, it is an enterprise framework for creating universal mobile applications. It uses hardware acceleration techniques to achieve high performance. Sencha Touch comes with five dozen built-in UI components and decent-looking themes, making it easy to create amazing apps that attract users.

The framework includes a robust data package that can use data from any internal data source. With this package, you can create collections of data using highly functional models that offer features such as sorting and filtering. Sencha Touch has received praise from many influential companies and organizations.

Conclusion of the review of cross-platform frameworks for mobile application development:

No matter which mobile app development framework you choose, don't be afraid to change your mind if you ever feel like there are better development environment options. Cross-platform frameworks are extremely fluid, with new ones being released on a regular basis. Their goal is to help you quickly turn a rough idea into a working app, and a working mobile app into a finished product. In the end, it doesn't matter whether you achieve your goal using the latest modern framework that everyone is talking about, or a long-established framework that is starting to gather dust.

When Chinese IT company Huawei decided to unveil its new multimedia phone surrounded by the ornate National Museum of Catalonia in Barcelona, it certainly gave hints to the journalists present (covering technology news) about what they would see. After all, the recently unveiled Huawei Mate X foldable smartphone looks a bit like a rare Picasso painting.

First review of Huawei Mate X: a smartphone with a folding screen - attractive, has powerful technical characteristics and an incredibly expensive price to buy it.

So, what is the Huawei Mate X smartphone? The impression from the first review of Huawei Mate X can be expressed by the phrase that this smartphone is great. Even the phrase that this is a beautiful smartphone softens the review a little. Rather, he is magnificent in his own way. It has perhaps the most worthy industrial design of any mobile phone that the tech giants have ever released in the last few years. The new Huawei smartphone, from contemplation and deep imagination, clearly expands the boundaries of what smartphones can be. Since the size of a smartphone screen easily turns into a tablet one. Thus, mobile content can be viewed in a convenient way.

Those who know everything about phones might think that when asked for a unique price, the Mate X is a bit like the Picasso story in that it is a very expensive smartphone. The Mate X has raised the bar for smartphone prices. But perhaps, given the specifications on offer, it can justify its high price for those deciding which phone to buy.

Display on Huawei Mate X.

Which display is better? Huawei Mate X has a single display that can be transformed into three different configurations. The first mode is 8-inch tablet. It's an almost perfect square with an aspect ratio of 8:7.1 and a resolution of 2480 by 2200 pixels.

Since the screen is on the outside of the smartphone, when the mobile device is folded, you get two screens. The front screen offers 6.6 inches from edge to edge, complemented by a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and a pixel resolution of 2480 by 1148.

There is also a back that offers fewer inches for the screen as it houses the device's cameras and handle. You will primarily use this part to take selfie photos. This part provides a decent (but thin) screen size of 6.38 inches with a somewhat compressed 25:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 2480 by 892 pixels.

How comfortable is the Huawei Mate X in terms of thickness?

When folded, the Huawei Mate X mobile phone is 11 millimeters thick and, unlike the rival Samsung Galaxy Fold phone, there is no bulky gap. It is completely flat and locks into place with just one click. It would be interesting to test how well it locks when thrown into a purse, for example, and see if it can accidentally open or not.

When unfolded, the Mate X smartphone is 5.4mm thick, which is slightly thinner than the iPad Pro!

On Huawei Mate X, the camera, the pen - everything is for the user!

A quick look at the side of the Huawei Mate X - it's a handle (Huawei's fairly descriptive term). The device contains three mobile cameras, including one using Leica hardware. In technology news, this was not a surprise. The same configuration has appeared on all Huawei phones, starting with the P20 Pro model. It would be strange if the manufacturer Huawei refused such a function in such a revolutionary device.

You may notice that the phone does not have a dedicated front-facing selfie camera. This is because the three rear cameras are selfie cameras. To take a photo of yourself, you just need to fold your phone and flip it over.

It's all pretty exciting. Huawei's premium phones are regularly considered to have the best camera phones on the market. While the company didn't share any camera samples during the launch event, it's fair to say that some people love the experience of taking selfies with a high-end mobile camera enhanced by Master AI software.

And because the back of the Mate X also contains a screen, you can use your smartphone when taking photos, for example to show the subject of your photo a preview of how they'll end up looking in the photo.

Huawei employees claim that there are no problems with the camera on the Mate X model. This is good news, both in terms of appearance and overall durability. The latter is what the company is focusing on as it announced a specially designed protective case with the phone.

New 5G connectivity and performance for the Mate X smartphone.

When reviewing the Mate X, it's important to remember that Huawei is more than just a phone maker. It targets a variety of IT areas, including SoC design. Therefore, it is not surprising that the Mate X uses a Balong 5G modem, as well as a Huawei Kirin 980 processor.

The modem is especially interesting because Huawei promises that the performance will be more than double that of modems from rival firms such as Qualcomm Snapdragon and Samsung Exynos. It is assumed that users who can afford to buy Huawei Mate X in stores will be able to use the download speed of 4.6 Gbps, for example, to download a 1 GB movie in just three seconds. Of course, right now, we have not been able to independently verify this, so for now we can only take our word for it.

What operating system is installed on Huawei Mate X?

In terms of software, the Mate X runs Google Android 9.0 Pie system.

A Huawei spokesperson also said that Desktop Mode software will be available for its latest foldable phone, allowing the Mate X to be used as a smartphone, tablet, or even a desktop computer.

Huawei Mate X memory.

Mate X is a mobile phone with two SIM cards, one slot of which supports 5G network, and the other is limited to 4G communication. If you don't need the latter feature, you can simply insert an NM card (clarification, NM is a nano memory card invented by Huawei that offers the same type of memory as a microSD memory card but in a smaller form factor) and add additional a place to store data in a mobile device. At the same time, the basic version of the smartphone is available with 512 GB of memory. Even the most dedicated filmmakers are unlikely to use all that storage capacity in a mobile phone.

Battery for Mate X.

With such a big screen to work with, you'll be glad to know that the Huawei Mate X phone launched with a pretty gigantic battery. The device has two cells, which together measure up to a respectable 4500 mAh. Unfortunately, there are no battery tests right now, so it's difficult to say how this translates into actual use of the new smartphone.

The Chinese company shared that the Mate X comes with a 55W super charging feature that can recharge the phone's battery by 85 percent in just thirty minutes.

Huawei Mate X pricing.

The Huawei Mate X is perhaps the most important phone ever introduced by the rising Chinese tech brand, and not just because it cements its reputation as an innovative premium handset maker. This phone implements the company's more than three years of research and development and integrates advances in materials technology and communications equipment.

With this in mind, don't be surprised that the smartphone comes with really expensive prices, starting at 2,299 euros. When Huawei CEO Richard Yu (the English spelling of his name is "Richard Yu") broke the news, the silence from the crowd he had previously enjoyed was replaced by whispers of questioning. How much, how much does it cost?

Speaking of prices, it is about 300 euros more expensive than the flagship mobile device Samsung Galaxy Fold. And it's about 800 Euros more expensive than the most expensive Apple iPhone. Price-wise, the Mate X is in the same range as the company's previous luxury phones that bore the brand of luxury car brands, namely Porsche.

Huawei is not oblivious to the high cost of the Mate X, and during the conversation, Richard Yu said that the price of the phone reflects the high cost of research and development of the mobile device. He explained that the patented hinge that separates the two displays was a three-year development process and contains over a hundred different parts. This kind of research and development is not cheap, and it is inevitable that there will be costs.

However, two things are inevitable. Firstly, there will be no shortage of enthusiastic pioneers willing to save on a lot in order to save up the money for a premium phone. For these buyers, there is an undeniable allure to being among the first to own something special. Perhaps Huawei can take advantage of the news buzz and benefit from more than just selling cheaper phones.

Secondly, prices on the market will inevitably decline. Perhaps not for this smartphone, but certainly for foldable smartphones in general. By and large, the price of 2300 Euros per phone will be perceived as a deviation from the norm. This will be driven by several factors, ranging from inevitable cost savings to competition from other up-and-coming brands like Xiaomi and OPPO, which are making strong inroads into the Western smartphone market.

Availability of purchasing Huawei Mate X.

For example, Huawei hasn't said how much the device will cost in the UK, but if you're guessing, it'll probably cost around £2,300. This assumption takes into account previous price trends, high UK sales tax and the continued decline of the pound.

Also, Huawei CEO Yu did not mention any plans to release the Mate X in the United States. Which is not surprising. The company rarely releases phones in the US. Thus, the Mate 20 Pro smartphone, which until recently was the best Android phone and which could be bought for reasonable money, was completely absent from the American market, which forced American consumers to order the smartphone from abroad. This situation could push prices even higher for US users, who may be forced to pay high customs duties and taxes.

When will it be possible to buy Huawei Mate X?

Huawei has announced that the Mate X will be released mid-year. Unfortunately, this message was not more specific. To clarify, you just need to wait and see what the official release date for Huawei Mate X will be.

Are you planning to buy a new premium phone? There are reasons why it's better to wait before buying a premium phone right now. Which? Here are some of the main reasons. What the buyer can expect from premium phones in 2019 is a new Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 mobile chip, new super fast 5G connectivity, foldable screen design and a 48-megapixel mobile camera.

All about phones and buying them: If you are planning to buy a new premium phone, wait at least one month to buy it. And that's why:

It is expected that at the Mobile World Congress 2019 (also known as MWC 2019), which will be held in just a couple of weeks (on the twentieth of February), most of the leading smartphone companies will present their latest flagship phones with advanced features and updated technical specifications.

So, new cell phone specifications for this year.

Samsung will release the Galaxy S10 multimedia phone, while HMD Global will introduce the Nokia 9 PureView five-camera phone. Phone makers Huawei, Oppo and LG will also showcase their latest mobile devices at the upcoming mobile expo.

But in 2019, buyers need to think about more than just the next model upgrade cycle when purchasing a new premium phone. And the reasons for this are the unique technical characteristics in the description of the phones.

- Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor.

Qualcomm's top-end processor powers most premium phones, from the Samsung Galaxy S9 to the OnePlus 6T. The Snapdragon 845 processor is now history. The latest Qualocmm Snapdragon 855 chipset, based on 7nm process technology, offers better performance, higher battery efficiency and built-in artificial intelligence (aka AI) processing.

Paired with the Snapdragon X50 modem, the Snapdraon 855 will also bring 5G mobile connectivity to premium smartphones in 2019.

Other key features of the chipset include improved gaming performance (Adreno 640 GPU), artificial intelligence and a higher resolution camera, as well as an in-display fingerprint sensor.

- 48 megapixel camera.

The latest premium smartphones are expected to come with a higher resolution camera. The 48MP camera is the new rage and already several phones like Honor View20 and Redmi Note 7 have a similar feature.

While resolution is certainly not the best measurement to judge a camera by, the built-in sensors are also improving significantly. Most of these 48MP camera phones are likely to use the Sony IMX586 sensor, dubbed the highest resolution camera sensor for mobile phones.

Apart from better camera resolution and sensors, premium mobile phones 2019 may also come with Samsung-like quad and penta (five) camera setups. Most 2018 phones featured dual cameras with a primary camera while the secondary camera ranged from ultra-wide, depth to monochrome.

We expect the new phones to feature most of these sensors with three, four or five cameras.

- Fifth generation mobile communications: 5G.

The evolution of mobile networks continues! The upcoming MWC 2019 will also be a launching pad for 5G phones. Xiaomi, OnePlus, Samsung and almost all the leading players in the mobile market are expected to introduce their new phones with 5G connectivity. Most of these phones will also hit the European and US markets later this year. Some Apple fans are already looking to buy the 5G iPhone. For other countries, the rollout of 5G networks may be delayed by at least one year. But investing in a 5G phone right now wouldn't be a bad idea.

- Folding mobile phone.

Folding phones are no longer a concept, screen folding is already part of the features of mobile phones. Korean company Samsung introduced its first foldable phone late last year. It is expected to unveil the commercial version of the phone at its event on February 20, ahead of the MWC 2019 mobile expo.

Samsung is likely betting big on the new form factor, as it plans to release at least one million foldable phones this year. Considering that Russia is one of the priority markets, we can expect that foldable phones will also be released. Apart from Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi and Oppo have plans to launch foldable phones this year.

- Artificial intelligence in phones, plus don’t forget about machine learning.

Google introduced the Android 9 Pie operating system last year. Android Pie features like Adaptive Display and Adaptive Brightness are powered by machine learning to help improve your Android phone experience. Going forward, artificial intelligence and machine learning will become an important part of updates to the Google Android platform. It may be worth making sure that your new phone will be compatible not only with Android 9 Pie, but also with the Android Q successor.

Besides Google, phone companies like Xiaomi and Asus are embedding artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) directly into system apps. The camera on premium phones, for example, uses AI and ML to automatically recognize scenes and automatically optimize settings. Most of the 2019 mobile phones will come with AI-enhanced cameras.

The only thing that remains a dream when buying is when the best mobile phones will have a full-fledged “3D phone” feature.

News added:

1) Samsung has released the latest version of Galaxy S10 and people believe that iPhone may lose its position as the king of smartphones.

The latest flagship smartphone Samsung Galaxy S10 was released by the company on February 20. On this day, Samsung presented many new products. The audience was really interested in the new phone demonstrated. So much so that they say that Apple's iPhone has a serious alternative. With the latest Galaxy S10 model, Samsung surprised and shocked fans, in a good way.

2) The attractive, powerful and incredibly expensive Huawei Mate X foldable 5G phone.

Following the announcement of the first folding smartphone Samsung Galaxy Fold, the Chinese company Huawei is betting on the folding screen form factor and announcing the release of Huawei Mate X, which also works with 5G communications. Developer Huawei is taking a completely different approach compared to Samsung, namely placing the smartphone's rollable display on the outside rather than on the inside, and this solution has a number of pros and cons when describing next-generation phones. The price of Huawei Mate X starts from 2299 Euro.

3) Will Apple release a foldable iPhone?

Some analysts believe that a foldable iPhone could be in the works from the Cupertino company. Then, if the new Apple smartphone comes with a folding screen, it has a chance to become the best among the already released foldable smartphones Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X.

Apple released the 5th generation of its smartphones in several basic modifications. We are talking about iPhone versions 5, 5S and 5C. And if the differences between the first two and third modifications, in principle, can be traced already at the design level, then the iPhone 5 and 5S look incredibly similar. But if you follow the marketing logic of the manufacturer brand, there must be a difference between them. What is it expressed in?

How big is the difference?

Some experts who have studied the characteristics of the iPhone 5 and 5S and compared both smartphones believe that the difference between the phones is in the nature of individual nuances. The concept, experts believe, is generally the same for both devices. But there are also those who believe that the fifth generation of iPhones in the new modification, classified by the S index, is still the result of a rather serious reworking of the device of the previous version.

So there is no consensus among experts on the similarity of the two smartphones. It will be all the more interesting to study the characteristics of the iPhone 5 and 5S in order to get objective facts at your disposal.

Technical specifications

Let's compare the basic technical characteristics of the two smartphones. We will also study them in comparison with another in the same generation - 5C. Let's list the 5Cs, synchronizing information across phones in relation to each of them.

The operating system installed on the iPhone 5 is iOS version 6.1, but it is possible to update the OS to version 7. The devices of the other two modifications have iOS 7 already pre-installed. In principle, at the software level, the differences are minimal.

Size and its meaning

The next interesting point is the size. The iPhone 5 and 5S are practically no different in this regard. The dimensions of both are as follows: length - 123.8 mm, width - 58.6 mm, thickness - 7.6 mm. In turn, the indicators for the iPhone 5C version are slightly different: 124.4 by 59.2 and 8.97 mm, that is, it is generally larger than its “brothers”. Mainly due to the dissimilarity in size compared to other versions, the 5C smartphone is sometimes considered almost as a separate class of device. To what extent can this thesis be legitimate? We will try to answer this question below.

The weight of iPhone 5 and 5S is also the same - 112 grams each. The smartphone in the 5C version is slightly heavier - 132 grams. The case material is the same in iPhones 5 and 5S - it is aluminum. In turn, the iPhone 5C uses polycarbonate.

The color scheme in the supplied kits is different for each version of the iPhone. The smartphone in the 5th modification can be bought in black or white, 5S - in gold, gray or silver, 5C - in yellow, green, blue, red or white.

The display characteristics of each of the fifth generation phones are exactly the same. The screen diagonal is 4 inches, the type of matrix used is IPS, the resolution is 640 by 1136 pixels. The screen of all phones is the same - apparently, as Apple engineers thought, it was good enough already in the first fifth-generation model.

In terms of processor, there are also differences between iPhone versions. The very first gadget of this generation is equipped with an A6 chip with two cores operating at a frequency of 1.3 GHz. The processors installed on the other two versions of the device have the same clock speed, but in the case of the iPhone 5S, a 64-bit architecture is used. The smartphone version 5C has the same chip as the first device in the series.

As for the camera, in the iPhone 5S it has undergone a fairly deep modernization. Its aperture is f/2.2 (in the two previous versions - f/2.4). However, the resolution of this hardware component is the same in all versions of the smartphone - 8 megapixels. Also, the camera of the newest gadget in the line - 5S - now has optical stabilization.

Dissimilarity theory

There is a reason to say - yes, Apple has launched a flagship on the market, which is endowed with a number of characteristics different from previous versions. At the same time, the iPhone in version 5S, based on the parameters we examined, is no more similar in hardware to the 5th modification than the same 5C, which, due to its increased dimensions, seems to be a separate class of device (we, by the way, found that This thesis is not entirely legitimate). However, it is necessary to study the nuances. Let's consider how real the practical differences in the characteristics of the iPhones 5 and 5S are in comparison with the declared ones.

Camera

Many experts focus on the fact that in the updated version of the device, individual components were definitely improved. We said above that the camera in the new version of the iPhone has been upgraded. Experts believe that this is absolutely not in vain. Moreover, this is not expressed in the superiority of this hardware component in terms of megapixels - as we noted above, this indicator is the same for all fifth-generation smartphones. According to experts, the difference is completely different - iPhone 5 and 5S produce photos that are completely different in quality. All those modes that are stated in the range of camera characteristics - shooting in natural light, in the dark, in series or in slow-motion format - work, as experts assure, perfectly.

So, in practice, smartphones produce photos of different quality. The iPhone 5 and 5S differ in terms of camera upgrades, not just nominally. This is also noted by the owners of the gadgets in question.

In a similar way, we will analyze the nominal and real differences, adding other information regarding other characteristics along the way.

CPU

The next aspect in which nominal differences can be traced is that the iPhone 5 and 5S are equipped with different processors. The older version of the smartphone has an A6 chip with a frequency of 1.3 GHz and two cores. The updated iPhone has an A7 processor running on a 64-bit architecture. We can say that the iPhone 5S is the first 64-bit mobile device of its kind. At the same time, according to some experts, the practical difference between the performance in version 5 and 5S is not so noticeable, simply because very few games and applications designed for 64-bit architecture have been released so far.

Battery

Interestingly, the updated version of the smartphone has a more powerful battery with a capacity of 1570 mAh (while the previous one had 1400). However, in practice, in terms of the autonomy of the devices, there is no difference - iPhone 5 and 5S have the same level of energy consumption. Therefore, as far as the battery is concerned, formally there is a difference, but in reality it is almost invisible.

At the same time, some experts tested the iPhone 5 and 5S and compared the resources of both devices in terms of battery life using specialized programs. In a number of cases, it was possible to find that an older version of a smartphone, despite the fact that its battery capacity was lower, was able to work longer. In particular, similar results were recorded when using the popular GLBenchmark test, which implies a full load of the key hardware components of the device.

Design

If you look at the phone closely, only a small difference is noticeable between the two versions - the iPhone 5 and 5S are very similar in terms of design. However, a certain difference is still present. The fact is that the iPhone 5S version is equipped with a unique biometric sensor. In addition, it is combined with the branded Home button.

Experts consider the technology introduced by the manufacturer to be sufficiently progressive to record a significant difference between the two versions of the devices. We will study the features of the biometric sensor a little later.

There is a slight difference in the color design of the case. In the 5th version, its end sections were black; in the 5S modification they acquired a silver tint. The back wall of the new smartphone model is almost identical in design to the 5-series variant. However, along with the updated version of the smartphone, more replaceable panels are supplied that can be installed on the back - the corresponding part is available to the user in three color options. Difference? To some extent, yes.

Screen

If we compare the iPhone 5 and 5S in terms of screen characteristics, we won’t see much of a difference. The matrix type in the new version of the smartphone is the same as in the previous one - IPS, the display diagonal is the same - 4 inches. The resolution is also identical - 640 by 1134 pixels. Thus, the screen is a hardware component in which the iPhone 5 and 5S are absolutely no different. The comparison can be continued by focusing on one of Apple's key innovations in the updated version of the smartphone - the biometric sensor.

Sensor

In fact, this component does not represent any revolutionary technology - it is just a miniature one. In order to use it, you need to make a number of settings - set password access in the system, and then - set a fingerprint as a barrier to entering the interface. Maybe even several. In order for the smartphone to be guaranteed to recognize your finger, you will have to touch it to the scanner several times. The sensor, as experts note, works perfectly.

Interface

Experts who decided to compare the iPhone 5 and 5S identified a number of differences between the devices in terms of interface. For example, when choosing an action option for an incoming call, it became possible to use the call reminder option. In this case, the smartphone performs the corresponding function after some time or as soon as the person leaves the building (in this case, the change in his location is determined through the GPS module). Also, as experts note, the design of the interface for working with messages has changed. For example, you can move them with your finger to the left to create a list where the delivery time will be displayed.

Other innovations in the interface include an updated calendar, clock, alarm clock, there is a completely new toolkit for viewing photos in the “Gallery”, the weather application has also changed its design. The built-in browser has been slightly improved with an emphasis on integration with social networks. In terms of software, therefore, the iPhone 5 and 5S are quite noticeably different. Comparing devices in terms of interface is important for many specialists.

Camera: soft

Experts note some changes in the camera control interface. The software elements of working with this hardware component have become, first of all, simpler. The corresponding buttons are more conveniently located. Thus, at the software level, the camera in the new iPhone is significantly different from previous versions. In terms of performance, this hardware component, as we said above, has undergone noticeable improvements in the iPhone 5S. Experts, as well as users, actively praise the quality of photographs. Video recording is of excellent quality.

conclusions

What conclusions can we come to after making a short review? iPhone 5S and 5, of course, have a number of obvious differences both in hardware (battery, camera, processor, biometric sensor) and in software (the control interface has changed). At the same time, according to many experts, the new smartphone from Apple can hardly be characterized as a device that is one step ahead of the previous version. In particular, if we take the processor, the 64-bit architecture currently does not provide any practical advantages. The battery, despite the increased capacity, in practice is not capable of providing longer battery life (and in some cases - at least identical to the performance of the previous smartphone).

Conservative flagship

The camera, despite the fact that it is certainly improved in the new version of the iPhone, was also decent in all previous modifications of the device. Based on the price difference between the two versions of the iPhone, perhaps only ardent fans of the brand would agree to overpay for the camera (as well as for the biosensor). At the same time, experts who examined the smartphone in several versions at once (not only iPhone 5, 5C and 5S, but also fourth-generation gadgets) believe that the new series of devices, the 5th, is very noticeably superior to the previous, 4th .

In the fifth generation of smartphones, according to experts, three types of devices appeared, adapted for different categories of users. At the same time, analysts call the iPhone 5S a sales flagship. In turn, according to some reports, Apple plans to completely replace the smartphone in version 5 on the shelves with a new device (as it is implemented). As for the smartphone in the 5C version, it is assumed that it will be aimed at a youth audience. And this despite the larger sizes, as we noted at the very beginning of the article. The iPhone 5 and 5S are slightly smaller, but, according to experts, they are defined by Apple marketers as more conservative models.
