At first glance, the question in the title seems rather trivial, but many novice iPhone/iPad users (hereinafter, let's just say iPhone) very often do not know not only how to reflash an iOS device, but also why it is needed in general. First, a little tedious theory to better understand the process, and then step by step we will consider all possible firmware methods.

What is iPhone firmware?

They call it firmware recovery or update iOS. Flashing is necessary to return the iPhone to its factory state and install the latest software on it. This is done if:
a glitch was detected in the iOS device;
installation of the latest version of the operating system is required;

The first one is universal; it can be used to both restore the system and update it. The software is first downloaded to your computer via iTunes and then installed on your phone. The second method consists only of updating and requires the presence of Wi-Fi.

Attention! Never update a jailbroken device, this can lead to very sad consequences (eternal iTunes icon on the screen). It is best to restore a jailbroken iPhone in DFU mode.

Also, you should not update or restore your iPhone to the official firmware if it is locked.. Otherwise, you risk losing the ability to unlock it programmatically, since the version of not only the iOS firmware is upgraded, but also the firmware of the modem itself.

Three iPhone modes. What are they for and how to use them

There are three main modes in which the iPhone can be:
— Normal. The normal operating state of your phone.
— Recovery mode (or Recovery mode). In this mode, the device can be restored from a previously made backup copy, or updated to the latest firmware version via iTunes.

To enter the device into Recovery mode you must:
1. Connect your iPhone to your computer using a USB cable;
2. Then turn it off;
3. Turn on, and then press and hold the Home button until the image appears;


4. To exit the device from this mode, simultaneously press and hold the power button and the round central button (home) for 10 seconds. After turning off the phone, turn it on as usual (hold the power button for 3-5 seconds)

— Update mode (DFU). This is a special device mode in which iOS does not load, and all technical and service information is supplied to the device via a USB connection. DFU mode restores all settings. In this mode, unlike Recovery, nothing is displayed on the screen (white or black). When iTunes recognizes your iPhone in DFU mode, the following message will appear on the screen.



To put your iPhone into DFU mode you need to:
1. Connect the device to the computer using a USB cable;
2. Simultaneously hold down the Power and Home buttons for 10 seconds;
3. Now release the power button, but continue to hold Home until the computer determines that the device has entered DFU (see image above);
4. Exiting from this mode is similar to exiting from Recovery;

How to flash iPhone using iTunes?

In Recovery mode

1. First, you need to get the latest version of iTunes.
2. Next, download the current firmware for your device;
3. Now connect the iPhone as usual to the computer and launch iTunes;
4. Select your device;



6. In the window that opens, select the IPSW file downloaded in step 2 and click open;


7. The recovery process has begun.

In DFU mode

1. Download and install iTunes (from the link above);
2. Now download the latest firmware for your iOS device (also from the link above);

Flashing procedure

In general, to solve the problem in question, iPhone 4s owners are offered two options, each of which is absolutely valid, effective, and also allows you to restore your smartphone quite easily and quickly:

Next, the File Manager will open, where the subscriber will need to select the firmware. You need to find a file that contains the firmware downloaded before the operation began. Then you need to select it and click the “Open” button.

After this, the program will do everything on its own; you just need to wait for the process to complete. Once completed, the device must be disconnected from the computer. Then you need to turn off the phone by holding down the Power button. After that, by pressing the same button again, you need to turn on the smartphone. That's all, absolutely all iPhone settings have been corrected, and it is ready for further use.

Flashing using DFUmode

Even before the process under consideration begins, the smartphone must be switched to DFUmode. Then you need to connect the phone to the computer and turn it off. After this, on the device you need to simultaneously hold down the Home and Power buttons and count ten seconds, after which you need to release the Power key and continue to hold Home until the iTunes program recognizes the smartphone you are setting up in DFU mode.

Subsequent actions must be performed in strict sequence, and they are almost completely identical, as in the case of RecoveryMode:

  1. First you need to select the required device in the program.
  2. In the phone manual menu, you need to find the “Restore iPhone” item.
  3. After that, you need to select it by pressing the Shift button (if you are using the Windows operating system) or Alt (when you are using the Mac operating system).
  4. In the window that opens as a result, you need to specify the path to the file with the previously downloaded firmware, and then click on the “Open” button.
  5. After completing the actions, the subscriber needs to wait until the program completes the ongoing procedure.
  6. All that remains is to turn on the restored smartphone, after which you can absolutely calmly and confidently use a completely working iPhone 4s.

The considered solution to the problem will be useful to those subscribers who installed Jailbreak on their own device, or due to certain reasons, flashing it in RecoveryMode did not lead to success.

Each of the flashing options considered is absolutely valid and should help solve the problem in question. The subscriber does not need to be afraid to carry out this process independently, since there is nothing complicated about it. You just need to have the slightest skills in using a smartphone and be extremely careful. Actions must be performed in strict sequence, and then a successful ending is guaranteed. The main advantage of the process is that you do not need to spend any money, as if it happened at a service center. Despite this, a person receives a phone with almost the worst settings provided by the gadget service center. But if you still doubt your abilities, or for some reason you were unable to achieve your goal, then it is better to seek professional help or at least specialist advice. By the way, if you, for example, have an iPhone 5, then there are several firmwares for it - I recommend choosing the latest 10.3.3 right away and paying special attention to GSM and CDMA modifications (if, for example, a phone with a CDMA connection, then GSM will not install).

Don’t even try to install iOS 11 firmware on iPhone 5 or iPhone 5s - it won’t run it because of the processor installed in it.

Step two is to reflash the iPhone yourself via a computer, via iTunes

As you have already noticed, you will need a computer (laptop) and a cable to connect the PC to the iPhone. I think you have it.

Then, if not yet, install and connect the computer to the phone, but do not turn it on, unless you want to make a copy, which will never hurt for recovery if the flashing fails.

It is advisable to place the downloaded iOS on the computer desktop so as not to search for a long time, although this does not affect the process itself, no matter where it is located.


We have completed the initial stage, we are moving on to the second - setting up the iPhone for flashing.

Since I already mentioned iPhone 5 above, I will use it as an example, and on other devices such as iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 7, and so on, everything happens the same way, except for entering DFU mode.

Step three - reflash the iPhone yourself

ATTENTION: be sure to charge the battery 100%, otherwise you may greatly regret it (if the battery does not hold up, you will have to open the device).

NOTE: Before flashing the firmware, be sure to disable the Find My iPhone feature.

Now to flash the firmware you will need to enter Recovery Mode or DFU on your iPhone. If one doesn't work, use the other.

To use Recovery Mode, turn off your iPhone completely, then connect it with a cable to your computer or laptop while holding the Home button.

Now launch the iTunes program and wait until iTunes finds the iPhone. If the “Restore” window appears, click “OK”.

If the message does not appear, select “Restore iPhone” while holding down the Shift key.

A window will appear in which you need to indicate where the firmware is located. We indicate the firmware file, which you should have already downloaded, and I recommended that you install it on your desktop. Select and click “Open”.

This is where your intervention stops - iTunes will do everything itself. At the final stage, disconnect the cable and turn on the iPhone as usual.

I hope the flashing was successful, and if not, it’s certainly sad, but there is another option - through DFU.

Step four - reflash the iPhone yourself via dfu

To do this, first connect the device to your computer. Second, turn off the device.

Hold the Power button for 3 seconds, then press the Home button without releasing the Power button for 10 seconds.

Release the Power button, but continue to hold the Home button until iTunes notifies you that it has detected the device in recovery mode.

Further actions are the same as when flashing via Recovery Mode.

NOTE: There is no home button on the iPhone 7. Therefore, after connecting, press and hold the “Power” button and without releasing it, hold down “Volume Down” and hold both buttons for 10 seconds. If the logo appears (picture below), it means you held the buttons too long - repeat the process.

If the display remains black and iTunes shows a message saying that it has detected a device in recovery mode, then you have put your iPhone into DFU mode.

Use this method if flashing via Recovery Mode did not work for some reason.

How to reflash a found or locked iPhone

A blocked or found iPhone can be reset in the same way as described above. Only a very unpleasant surprise, and possibly a tragic one, may await you.

The fact is that in a locked iPhone (locking restrictions is not taken into account - it can be easily removed) the “Find My iPhone” function can be enabled, and without knowing your account information and ID, you will not be able to disable it.

Even services refuse to accept such devices for flashing. An official service center can disable this service, but they will require documents to confirm that this is your phone, and this service is not free.

How to reflash an iPhone without a computer and without iTunes

It is not possible to reflash an iPhone without iTunes, that is, using phone tools - you can only update the device using iCloud storage, or rather restore it, if of course a copy is stored there.

To do this, you will definitely need Internet access, preferably via Wi-Fi, since a large amount of data will be transferred and it is better if it is high-speed.

It’s even more impossible to reflash without a computer - all this is done for security purposes. You can also restore an iPhone without iTunes using the CopyTrans Shelbee program.

It is also able to store data and subsequently move it to the iPhone (you need to create a backup file with contacts, messages, photos, videos, settings, and so on)

How to reflash a Chinese iPhone
