It says the default gateway is not available. Changing the router channel. Installing official Wi-Fi drivers from the manufacturer

Mass distribution wireless protocol Wi-Fi connection has led to the fact that in almost every modern house There is a router to which several devices are connected “over the air”. These can be smartphones, tablets, computers and many other gadgets. If there are problems with the connection, all devices are immediately left without the Internet.

At the same time, there are situations when everything works, but a computer running the Windows operating system refuses to connect to the wireless network. In such cases, when performing diagnostics using the system, a message will appear: “The default gateway is not available.” The error is typical for everyone modern versions operating system Windows, and it also moved to Windows 10. The computer administrator can try to get rid of it on his own, and below are the basic recommendations on what to do in such a situation.

Setting the default gateway manually

In the wireless connection protocol parameters, the default gateway is determined automatically. This causes all sorts of errors to occur. To avoid an error where the system determines that the default gateway is not available, you can try configuring manual mode. To do this you will need:

  • Default gateway: connection address to the router settings. In most cases, it is indicated on a sticker on the router itself or can be found on the Internet. The most common addresses for routers: 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.1.
  • IP address: close to the router’s configuration address, but differing by several tens in the last digit. For example, if the router address is 192.168.0.1, then in the IP address column you need to write 192.168.0.30 or something similar.
  • Subnet mask: this item will be filled in automatically.
  • Preferred DNS server: 8.8.8.8.
  • Alternate DNS server: 8.8.4.4.

When the settings are completed, click "OK" in all open windows and try connecting to the network again. If Windows continues to report that the gateway is unavailable, move on to the following solutions to resolve the issue.

Enabling FIPS Compliance

Another issue that can result in the “The default gateway is not available” error is Federal Information Processing Standard, aka FIPS, being disabled. In such a situation, you need to enable it; to do this, do the following:

If the checkbox is not checked, you need to check it, and then close all opened options by clicking “OK”. Next, try connecting to the network again.

When the checked box did not help solve the problem (or it was there before), proceed to the next method of resolving the error.

Setting up the power supply for the Wi-Fi adapter

Another problem that can cause the error discussed in this article is when the power supply to the wireless adapter through which the connection is established is turned off. To check the presence or absence similar problem, you need to do the following:

When all the settings specified in this paragraph have been completed, restart your computer, and then try connecting to the Internet again.

For the wireless adapter to work correctly, its drivers must be selected correctly and updated to the latest version. If the error “The default gateway is not available” starts to appear after the next Windows updates, it is possible that you should install the latest version of drivers for the adapter. You can download it from the official website of the device developers.

The problem may also arise if the adapter drivers were not installed on the computer at all. For example, the Windows 10 operating system can independently detect and install drivers for many devices, including wireless adapters. If she installed them herself, it is not a fact that it was done correctly. To check the driver provider you will need:

Important: Please note if, on the contrary, you have recently updated your drivers wireless device, and after that the error “The default gateway is not available” appeared, on the “Driver” tab of the adapter you can click the “Roll Back” button to return previous version software.

Hello! Today I decided to write several ways to solve one popular problem. A few days ago, a topic was created on our forum that described the problem, or rather the error “The default gateway is not available.”

The Wi-Fi connection was lost. And periodically. After connecting to the wireless network, the Internet on the laptop worked for some time. And then a yellow triangle appeared near the level Wi-Fi signal. Which means that there is a network without access to the Internet, I wrote about this.

When running troubleshooting, a message appeared that a problem was found and the problem was fixed. But after a while the Internet disappeared again. Here's the problem.

By the way, it was observed on Windows 8. But as far as I understand, it also occurs very often on Windows 7 (and possibly on XP, I don’t know for sure). I noticed that this problem often appears on adapters Broadcom.

I advised the author several ways to solve this problem, but they did not help. Then the author himself was able to solve this error and shared the method. Disabling “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” helped. (I’ll write more about this below). But this does not mean that this method can be used to solve the “The default gateway is not available” error on all computers. It will help some, but not others.

I'll write a few in my opinion useful tips to solve this problem.

Solving the error “The default gateway is not available”

We prohibit turning off the network adapter to save energy

I already wrote about this, not exactly in which article. But disabling this function also helps to get rid of the “Network without Internet access” error that appears after resuming from sleep mode in Windows 7.

So: go to device manager. Go to My Computer and click right click mouse over an empty area. Select Properties, then on the left select device Manager.

Open item Network adapters and right-click on the adapter through which you connect to the Internet. It's either wireless adapter, or network card. For example, I have a Wi-Fi adapter. Select Properties.

Then go to the tab Power management and uncheck the box next to Allow this device to turn off to save power. Click Ok.

Restart your computer and see the result.

We update the driver for the network (wireless) adapter.

Try downloading new driver on network card, or wireless adapter and removing old driver, install a new one. I will not describe this method again, I wrote about it in a separate article

And a few more ways

1. Open Start and in the search bar enter cmd. Run cmd.exe. Enter netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled and press Enter.

2. Try disabling or completely closing (uninstalling) programs that work with torrents and antiviruses (firewalls). If the problem is in the torrent, then run these commands (in the manner described above):

netsh interface tcp set global chimney=disabled
netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled
netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled
netsh int ip set global taskoffload=disabled

3. You can also try this method:

Go to Device Manager.
Right-click on your network adapter.
Select Properties, then Advanced and set the value to Flow Control And Task Offload on Off.

Afterword

These are the solutions. If you know other ways to get rid of this error, I would be grateful if you share your experience in the comments. You can also leave your questions there.

Best wishes!

The default gateway is not available [multiple solutions] updated: July 3, 2013 by: admin

A typical user has several devices at his disposal from which he can access the Internet, so a router is usually installed at home and configured wireless network. But sometimes it happens that mobile gadgets connects to Wi-Fi, but a computer running Windows OS displays the error “The default gateway is not available” when trying to establish a connection.

This error can appear on any version of Windows, including Windows 10. However, the system version does not affect the choice of method to resolve the problem; the methods are universal for all editions of Windows.

Manual gateway configuration

Since the automatically installed gateway is not available, you must provide other information to gain access to the network. This can be done through the connection properties.

Some clarification is needed here. In the line “Default gateway” the address of the router is written, through which its web interface is accessible. You can see it on the device itself; there is a sticker on the case.

The “IP address” is registered close to the main gateway, but differs in the last digit, preferably by several tens - 20, 30.

The “subnet mask” will be filled in automatically, and the DNS should be specified as shown in the screenshot - 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

Enabling FIPS Compliance

Another reason that the gateway is not detected may be that the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) is disabled. To fix the problem, you need to enable it.

Click OK to save the configuration. If manual installation gateway and enabling FIPS does not solve the problem, then go to in the following way troubleshooting.

Setting up the power supply

Another fairly common reason for the error to appear is an interruption in the power supply to the wireless adapter. The module stops working and the connection is not established. The problem is resolved by manual settings power supply

This is not the end of the power supply setup. For the adapter to work properly, you must set it to maximum performance mode.

After configuring the power supply, restart your computer for the configuration to take effect. The next time you turn on, try connecting to the Internet again to make sure the problem goes away.

Checking drivers

If the error starts appearing after Windows reinstallation or next update system, you should check the wireless power adapter drivers. Perhaps the hardware software has crashed, so the device does not work correctly.

If rolling back the driver does not help, then you should go to the wireless adapter manufacturer’s website from another computer and download the software for your model. Then install the drivers and try connecting to the Internet again.

When diagnosing your network, you may encounter the message “The default gateway is unavailable.” This error is not critical. It can be fixed in several ways: manually specifying the gateway, changing power settings, or updating/rolling back drivers.

What is this error and when does it occur?

On laptops or PCs with a wireless adapter connected via Wi-Fi, the . In this case, a yellow icon will appear on the icon in the bottom panel. Exclamation point, as well as the inscription “ Limited access to the network."

Most users run troubleshooting, which identifies a problem with the gateway. The system may automatically fix it, but this is a temporary solution. Through certain time you will encounter a similar message again.

The gateway is an IP address to which packets are sent from the computer to the router. As a rule, such parameters are set automatically when DHCP is active. But this service may fail when setting the correct gateway. The result is that your laptop sends packets to the wrong IP address without receiving a response from the router. The reason may also lie in incorrect settings power adapter from the network.

Optimal methods for solving the problem

There are a number of methods that can completely resolve the "default gateway is unavailable" error. There is no guarantee that one of the options will help in 100% of cases, so it is recommended to try each of the presented methods one by one.

Problem with third party programs

First of all, of course, we recommend determining whether the source of the problem is third party software. This includes programs such as a torrent client, antivirus, firewall and other software that actively interacts with the network. The diagnostic technique includes the following steps:

  1. Disable/uninstall the suspected program.
  2. Use the Internet, while observing whether access is lost.
  3. If the gateway error appears, enable the software and then move on to the next program.

Be careful, as some applications may be in autostart or running in background(for example, when an antivirus installs a database update).

Manually specifying the default gateway

The settings of the Windows operating systems allow the user to set the IP address and gateway independently. IN Windows versions Sections 7-10 described are identical, so you can use the following instructions regardless of OS version:

We enter this in the “Gateway” field. The mask is set automatically. In the IP address field, enter a similar combination, but replace the last number with a value from 10 to 255.

  1. Click "OK" and restart your PC/laptop.

This instruction will help solve the “default gateway is unavailable” problem. Look carefully at what network connection you edit.

Setting up a power plan

Laptops have a limited battery reserve, so, unlike computers, they actively use the energy-saving functions provided in operating systems. Windows systems. The Wi-Fi adapter can simply turn off when the battery is low, which leads to a well-known error. On Windows 7, 8 and 10, the user just needs to change the power settings. The following instructions will help you do this:

Save the changes and then restart your laptop/computer. Now (regardless of battery charge) wireless wifi adapter will always function, which will eliminate the loss of access to the Internet.

Installing/updating the Wi-Fi adapter driver

Not correct work Wi-Fi adapter is often associated with drivers. A set of drivers does not always come with a laptop on disk, so you have to search for it yourself. You can download them from the official website of your laptop manufacturer. Visit the sections “Support”, “ Software" or "Downloads". Choose your model and operating system carefully. Many drivers are divided into 2 types depending on the bit size of the OS (32 or 64 bit).

Also try searching for drivers via standard means Windows:

  1. Go to Device Manager.
  2. Right click computer mouse Click on the “Wireless adapter” item, and then click on the “Update drivers” line.

To update the software, users can use auxiliary software such as Driver Genius. This program will help you quickly and conveniently update any drivers on your computer. The database contains current versions for most of the existing models.

Rolling back the adapter driver

Installing a driver may not only not have a positive effect, but the wrong software can make the adapter completely inoperable. If you do not have access to the Internet from another device, be sure to perform a rollback. This is a procedure that restores previous version drivers. This is done in Device Manager:

The button will be inactive if there is nowhere to roll back. This means that the most early version. In the same window, the user can remove the driver. It is recommended to do this before installing a new one, since installation over an old one is not always carried out correctly.

Wi-Fi on a computer can stop working quite suddenly, the reasons can be very varied, and most often related to the signal transmission environment or the settings of the access point / router. It happens that some devices access the Internet perfectly, but the problem is observed only on a laptop or computer with USB WiFi adapter, and network diagnostics in Windows Vista, 7, 8, Windows 10 displays the message: The default gateway is not available.

1) Power management problems Wi-Fi adapter

You can fix the problem by going to Windows Device Manager. In the "Network adapters" section, find your wireless equipment and right-click on it and select "Properties". In the "tab" Power management" turn off "Allow this device to turn off to save power".

Also, in the "Wireless Network Adapter Settings" tab, set the "Power Saving Mode" field to "Maximum Performance".

2) Specifying the gateway manually

You can write in the parameters wireless connection The default gateway is manual rather than automatic. By the way, this method dates back to Windows Vista, and remains relevant to this day. To do this, go to "Network and Sharing Center" shared access" Windows, then click "Change adapter settings". Right-click on the "wireless network" icon and select "Properties". Then, in the "Network" tab, select "Internet Protocol IPv4", then click the "Properties" button.

In the "Use the following IP address" field, enter the IP address:
You will find the router's IP address on a sticker on the bottom of the router. Replace last block router address using any two-digit number and enter it in this field (i.e. 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.3). The subnet mask will be filled in automatically. You can enter the router's IP in the "gateway" field, although if you don't fill it in, nothing bad will happen. After clicking the "Apply" button, the settings will be applied.

To be sure, we can add static DNS, this way we will eliminate the dynamic acquisition of an incorrect DNS address.

3) Replacement Wi-Fi drivers adapter to official

Problems with a Wi-Fi adapter can be caused by an incorrectly working driver, just like any other driver. computer equipment. To remove suspicion from the device driver, it is recommended to install the official driver. The driver is not working correctly network adapter may lead to default gateway is not available. After installing the operating system, there is no guarantee that the official driver was installed, because Windows uses its own driver pack during installation; there is no guarantee that the automatically selected driver is 100% up-to-date and will work correctly.

By going to the device manager, looking at the "Driver" tab, you can view the properties of the driver, and also remove it if necessary. If Microsoft is listed as a driver supplier, this means the driver for the wireless adapter was installed automatically, i.e. Windows installed one of compatible drivers, which can cause the most various errors. IN such a case you need to download the driver from the official website of the manufacturer of the USB Wi-Fi adapter or laptop, indicating the exact model of the device.

4) Roll back the driver

Alternatively, you can try to roll back the driver. Click "Roll Back Driver" if the button is active.

5) Problems caused by running programs

It also happens that the error “The default gateway is not available” is caused by running programs. The reason may be in the torrent client "or other program actively using the Internet connection, or caused by certain settings antivirus program.

I hope the article helped you. I will be glad to receive comments and constructive criticism.
