Chileno Beach

Chileno Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Cabo San Lucas and offers vacationers a wide range of activities.

This is a wide beach with a flat, gently sloping shore and safe waters. This is the only beach in the region equipped not only with umbrellas and sun loungers, but also with toilets and trash cans. The beach has good conditions for kayaking, snorkeling, diving and even spearfishing.

Going on a diving excursion to the rocky reefs, you can see tropical fish, sea turtles, moray eels, sea urchins, gorgons, sponges and starfish.

Cabo San Lucas Marina

Cabo San Lucas Marina is a world class marina and offers yacht owners every comfort for their guests and crew.

The marina has 380 berths and can accommodate vessels up to 200 feet in length. Owners of even the most luxurious yachts can expect full vehicle maintenance from marina staff.

The marina is also known for sport fishing tournaments for marlin, tuna, dorado and wahoo. If you want to organize a banquet on the ship, you can order any dishes and alcoholic drinks from the service staff or go to one of the restaurants on the pier.

The Church of San Lucas, built in the 13th century, is the most visited Catholic church in the area.

This is a beautiful church that has retained its original appearance since its opening in 1730. It is a small building of light pink color. There is a cross above the arch of the main entrance to the church.

There are two rows of wooden benches inside. On both sides of the altar there are sculptures of saints, and its central part is decorated with flowers. Everyone is welcome to attend the masses, which take place every Saturday at 7 pm and Sunday at noon. Services are held in Spanish and English.

Beach Playa Las Viudas

Playa Las Viudas is a wild, secluded beach with a beautiful rocky coastline.

Thanks to the rocky shore, natural pools with warm water are formed here. The waters here are choppy, so it is not recommended to take children to the beach. In the evenings, this place attracts many loving couples admiring the view of the full moon and the sound of the surf.

When going here, you should take with you an umbrella, sunglasses, drinking water and everything you need for a comfortable stay. For professional divers, the place is interesting for its reefs. However, diving here is unsafe and can only be done during calm periods.

Cape Bahia de Cabo San Lucas

Bahia de Cabo San Lucas is the center of beach activities and water sports in Cabo San Lucas.

All amenities are located directly on the shore. Here you can go waterskiing, kayaking, glass bottom boating, snorkeling or diving to Chileno Reef or Cabo Pulmo Marine Park.

Fishing enthusiasts will have the opportunity to take part in sport fishing, and for young people it is possible to take a trip on board a pirate ship.

Nightclub Cabo Wabo Cantina

Cabo Wabo Cantina Nightclub is one of the three most famous live music nightclubs not only in Cabo San Lucas, but throughout Mexico.

It was founded in 1990 by American rock musician Sammy Hagar. Every day on the open stage of the club there are concerts of rock bands coming here from different countries of the world.

The nightclub offers its guests the services of a bar and a restaurant, which is open for lunch and dinner. The menu includes Mexican cuisine, seafood dishes and, of course, the signature tequila of the same name.

Beaches Cannery

Cannery Beaches are two beaches where tourists are rarely seen, but locals are regulars at these places.

The beaches connected to each other occupy a coastline about 160 meters long. Their name translates as “canned beaches”. They got it because of a nearby abandoned canned tuna factory.

Local residents can be seen here every day. While adults fish from the pier, their children can swim under the close supervision of their parents. You can get to them on foot, walking from the pier along the western shore.

More attractions in Cabo San Lucas

Cabo San Lucas is often called the pearl of the California peninsula. The peninsula itself is considered one of the driest regions on the planet. The thin strip of land stretches for a distance of 1247 km - much longer than the Apennine Peninsula of Italy. Its main attraction is nature: mountains, cliffs, azure bays, sand dunes, deserts, mountain slopes covered with various types of cacti, kilometers of beautiful white beaches, oases of date palms, beautiful sunrises and sunsets. The interior of the peninsula is practically uninhabited; most cities are located on the coast. The second longest peninsula in the world is washed in the west by the Pacific Ocean and in the east by the Sea of Cortez. At the very tip of the California Peninsula (where “the Earth ends and the ocean begins”) is Sabo San Lucas. The city has a reputation as the most elite resort in Mexico. In addition to sport fishing, visitors to Cabo (the city's shortened name) relax on the beaches, enjoy water sports and play golf on world-class courses.

Historically, Cabo San Lucas was first discovered by Hollywood stars more than sixty years ago. The movie stars liked the quiet and sparsely populated fishing village, in contrast to the rapidly growing and crowded Acapulco. The city was visited by such celebrities as the American king of westerns John Wayne, musician and actor Desi Arnez, comedian Lucille Desiree Ball, actor and singer Crosby Bing. They say that Nobel Prize winner in literature Ernest Hemingway and the famous explorer of the World Ocean Jacques Cousteau visited here. In 1951, another Nobel Prize winner, John Steinbeck, published Diary from the Sea of Cortez. This is how Cabo San Lucas became famous all over the world.

Cabo San Lucas map,
city center

Over time, a highway was built to the small fishing village, an international airport and a marina were built. Then very expensive resorts and villas gradually began to appear in Cabo, palm trees began to grow among the desert, and golf courses were built. Cabo remains renowned for its fishing, but is even more famous for its spectacular scenery, near-perfect weather, golf, water sports, marine life, whale watching and nightlife. Luxurious resort complexes have quickly brought the once small fishing village into the 21st century. Cabo San Lucas has become an elite resort in Mexico, catering primarily to non-poor tourists. It has become a popular holiday destination for Hollywood celebrities, very wealthy people and politicians from all over the world.

Cabo is quite different from other tourist destinations in Mexico. The city feels more like a US enclave in a foreign country than normal Mexican territory. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, United States citizens purchased vast tracts of land around Cabo San Lucas. The modern city is the result of a joint effort by wealthy U.S. citizens already living and owning property offering their vision for the area, along with Mexican landowners, developers, and federal officials involved in tourism development. Cabo San Lucas is the most Americanized tourist destination in Mexico. About 90% of tourists come from English-speaking countries, mainly the USA and Canada.

In the evenings, Cabo San Lucas turns into one of the most action-packed nightlife cities in Mexico, sparkling with a variety of restaurants and nightclubs. The resort's reputation as a nightlife hub has given its many bars and nightclubs both fame and notoriety. Many American and Canadian college students come to Cabo during spring break (around mid-March). Young people are enjoying themselves as much as they can; they either don’t forget the week of spring break they spent here, or, on the contrary, they can’t remember.

Cabo San Lucas attractions

Historical places

Plaza Amelia Wilkes is the main square of Cabo San Lucas, there is a gazebo, trimmed trees in the shape of a giant chicken, a whale skeleton, and a small house. Nearby is the city museum (open Mon. from 10 to noon, Tue.-Fri. from 10 to 19:00, Sat. from 10 to 14:00 and 16:00-20:00, Sun. 16:00-20: 00), exhibits illustrate the natural history and archeology of the region. Near the square there is a church founded in 1730 by the Spanish missionary Nicholas Tamaral.

El Arco

At the southern tip of the California Peninsula there is a concentrated series of beautiful, bizarrely shaped rocks. But none of them can compare to the grandeur of El Arco, one of Mexico's most famous natural attractions. It is an iconic symbol of Cabo San Lucas throughout the world. Along the entire western coast of Mexico there is no other natural attraction whose beauty matches El Arco. If the city had hired an advertising agency to design a logo that would best identify the city, it would be hard to come up with something more attractive than El Arco. Today, her image is found everywhere on postcards and souvenirs.

Centuries ago, English pirates hid behind El Arco in Cabo Bay to attack Manila galleons carrying treasure along the west coast. Traveling on a pirate ship today is a popular leisure activity for modern tourists.

Visitors can visit El Arco by boat, or walk under it at low tide. But this opportunity is provided once every 7 years. The last time this was possible was in 2006, therefore, the next time such an opportunity will come in 2013. The rest of the time, water floods the foot of the arch. There is probably no better photo in Sabo San Lucas than with El Arco in the background.

From a distance, El Arco doesn't look that huge. In close proximity, its large size becomes apparent. Climbing El Arco is dangerous and prohibited by law.

Visiting El Arco is quite easy. Small Mexican pangas (motorized fishing boats) make regular tours along the arch throughout the day.

Playa del Amante (Lover's Beach)

The famous American travel magazine Conde Nast Traveler recognized Lover's Beach as one of the 10 best beaches in Mexico. Together with El Arco, it is the most photographed site by tourists and appears in most advertisements for Cabo San Lucas. Playa del Amante is one of the most famous beaches in Cabo with unusually beautiful shapes of rocks and caves. The coastal waters are rich in various species of fish, and therefore serve as a popular scuba diving destination. Seals, sea lions, pelicans and other birds can often be seen. Lover's Beach faces the Sea of Cortez and is safe for swimming. Nearby (1 minute walk) is Playa del Divorcio (Beach of the Divorced), washed by the waters of the Pacific Ocean. The waves on this side are often huge and deadly! Therefore, it is better to swim only in the Sea of Cortez.

Most people get to the beach by boat, but do not land on the shore due to the large number of swimmers. So be prepared to go into the water two dozen meters from the beach. Walk towards the coast through the Solmar Playa Grande or Finistera hotels, then climb up and down the low cliff and you've reached Lover's Beach on your own (and for free). Or, alternatively, rent kayaks. Every day many vacationers kayak here.

Playa Medano

Cabo San Lucas has three main beaches. The most popular is Playa Médano, stretching in a northeast direction for 3 km from Hacienda Beach Resort. The beach is safe for swimming and walking at any time. The swimming area limited by buoys prevents the appearance of vacationers on water skis, water parachutes, fishing yachts, and so on. Mango Deck (http://www.mangodeckcabo.com) and Office (www.theofficeonthebeach.com) are the most famous bars where you can go day or night for food and drinks. A less expensive option is Baja Cantina.

Private operators along the beach provide everything you need for water sports: mask and snorkel, boats, jet skis, kayaks, catamarans, windsurfing boards (windsurfing lessons can be taken). The beach serves as a popular starting point for trips to nearby Lover's Beach. You can get there by boat or kayak. From Lovers' Beach to Divorced Beach is a 1-2 minute walk, but it is not safe for swimming.

Playa Solmar

There are not many vacationers on the Playa Solmar beach. Here you can sunbathe in peace and solitude, but unpredictable undercurrents and large waves claim several lives from unsuspecting tourists every year. Access to the beach is through the main entrance of the Hotel Solmar and Hotel Finistera.

Sport fishing

Fishing brought Cabo San Lucas its initial fame. The city is still considered one of the best places in the world for sport fishing. The mixing of the waters of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez creates a rich breeding ground for marlin, sailfish, tuna, dorado, and wahoo. Catching a 45kg marlin is a common occurrence here. Fishing is good at any time of the year, but the catch varies depending on the season. Wahoo season is from June to November; yellowfin tuna from May to December; seriola from January to April; black and blue marlin from July to December. Striped marlin and dorado are caught throughout the year. Decades of overfishing in the Sea of Cortez have significantly reduced fish stocks. Therefore, now amateur fishermen often release their catch back into the sea.

Cabo San Lucas is most famous for marlin fishing. Marlin dishes are a rare delicacy and are served in the best restaurants. The area near Cabo San Lucas has even been called the "Marlin Capital of the World." The name is well deserved; coastal waters are the richest in the world for this type of fish.

Catching marlin is considered the pinnacle of excellence in the world of sport fishing due to the size and strength of the fish, as well as the relative rarity of the species. In the past, when modern technologies for catching them were not available, it took a lot of skill and dexterity to catch marlin. This is a rather expensive activity that requires a lot of money and time to master all its intricacies. It is estimated that about 50,000 large species of fish, including marlin and swordfish, are caught annually in the Cabo San Lucas area.

Several professional competitions are held in the city throughout the year. The world's largest commercial sport fishing tournament, Bisbee, holds its competitions annually in Cabo San Lucas. The tournament has received worldwide recognition, is broadcast by the American cable sports television channel ESPN, covered by major magazines, and features celebrities and the world's most famous fishermen. The entry fee for the tournament is $25,000 USD! In October 2006, the tournament's total prize fund exceeded $4 million, the largest prize fund of any sportfishing competition to date.

Ask the administration of any hotel and they will help organize a sport fishing tour. It will be cheaper if you go to the south side of the marina, where several operators are located with their offices. If you organized fishing on your own, remember that you must first purchase a license.

Cabo San Lucas has a very small port, and cruise ships cannot dock here, so they anchor in the bay, and tourists are transported ashore on boats (tenders, as they are called there). On our cruise ship you could go from the ground floor directly to the tender.

But, for example, on the Celebrity liner, tourists were lowered into the water directly from the 4th floor... Click on the photo to view it.

The town itself is very tiny. Although it has its own airport. Cabo San Lucas lives exclusively on tourists, so there are hotels, villas, restaurants, shops everywhere...

True, there is still a small park. More like a garden. :)

And even their church is small, small. :)

But very cozy!

But, of course, the main attraction of Cabo is the rocks. At the port you can rent a small motor boat for $10 and look at the rocks up close.

The feature of the boat is its glass bottom, although you can only see something when it is not floating, but standing still. :)

And so we sail past the rocks...

And here is the main symbol, if you want - the logo, Cabo San Lucas - the Arch rock (Los Arcos)

Pelicans love to hang out on the rocks

And now in front of you is the Pacific Window. I don't even know how to translate. Probably Window to the Pacific Ocean.

It is called that because we see the Pacific Ocean through it, being in the Sea of Cortez (see map at the beginning of the post). :)

You can also get to Lovers Beach by boat (and only by boat). It is surrounded by rocks, so you can only get there from the water.

There are also many interesting rock formations on the Beach.

There are two shores on the beach, but you can only swim from the sea side, and from the ocean side, getting into the water is not only difficult, it’s extremely dangerous!

View from Lover's Beach to our cruise ship

And the view from our ship to Lovers Beach (both the sea and ocean shores are clearly visible here)

Through the city you can go around the rocks and find yourself on a nearby beach, but not a wild one, but with hotels and all the associated infrastructure

However, this doesn’t make the views any less beautiful! :)

Departure from Cabo San Lucas is also a whole event on the ship. Firstly, because you can try to take a photo with the famous Arch in the background. And secondly, because the liner travels for some time along the coast of the California Peninsula, which is also quite spectacular.

And again she is Arka!

We go around the rocks... (by the way, estimate the height of the liner! The shot was taken from the very top deck)

We are walking along the Pacific coast...

Hotels, villas, apartments...

The further you get from Cabo, the poorer the landscape...

I tried to take a photo of a whale jumping out of the water... Almost succeeded! :)))))

Well, and finally, we will return to the bay once again and enjoy the luxurious view of the paradise called Cabo San Lucas.
