Monitor Samsung 24 diagonal 390 in VAT. Some additional functional characteristics of the model

On the manufacturer’s website, this monitor can be found in the “Stylish Solutions” section. The rationale is given in the first paragraph of the description: “The smooth lines of the body, transparent elements of the screen frame and stand indicate the extraordinary lightness and airiness of the design.” With this and a couple of photos, the review could be completed, but for those who are interested not only in appearance, we will add all our standard tests of the monitor as a display device.

Appearance

All external surfaces of the case and stand have a mirror-smooth (and scratch-resistant, which is especially noticeable on black elements) surface with a more or less pronounced curvature (“smooth lines of the case”). The stand and frame of the screen are made of transparent tinted polycarbonate, while the blue-green tint of the frame is more pronounced. The surface of the matrix is black and matte.

Touch buttons (capacitive). Labels for the buttons are placed on the front surface of the frame; they are quite large and contrasting. You need to touch in the area of the icons. To the right of the power button on the front plane there is a status indicator.

The power connector and interface connectors are located in a shallow niche on the rear panel and are oriented towards the rear. Also on the back panel you can find a Kensington lock connector.

The monitor is equipped with an external, relatively small and lightweight power adapter.

From below, the base of the stand is reinforced with numerous stiffening ribs. Rubber square feet (six pieces) on the bottom of the stand protect the table surface from scratches and prevent the monitor from sliding on smooth surfaces. The relatively large base area provides the monitor with good stability, and since the base on top is almost flat and almost horizontal, the area occupied by the monitor on the desk is not completely excluded from the workspace. The hinge at the junction of the upper part of the stand with the screen block allows you to tilt the screen block slightly forward and more backward.

The monitor is packaged in a flat box with a branded, recognizable design. The box has a slotted handle on top, which makes it easier to transport the purchased monitor. This solution does not look reliable, but the box with the monitor is lightweight, and if you don’t jump with it in your hand, the handle won’t break out.

Switching

The monitor is equipped with two video inputs: HDMI and VGA. In addition to manual input selection, there is a switchable mode with automatic search for an active connection.

The HDMI input is capable of accepting digital audio signals (PCM stereo only), which are output after conversion to analog via a 3.5mm mini-jack. You can connect an external active speaker system or headphones to this socket. The power of the headphone output was enough to ensure that the volume in 32-ohm headphones was sufficient, and even with a large margin. The sound quality in the headphones is generally quite good - the sound is quite clear, all frequencies are reproduced, and there is no noise during pauses.

Menu, localization and control

The power indicator glows dimly blue during operation, in standby mode it blinks blue and does not light up if the monitor is conditionally turned off. If the monitor is in operating mode and there is no menu on the screen, then pressing any button displays a quick access menu of four items - calling the main menu, turning on/off game mode, going to volume control and switching input.

The menu is relatively large. The right side of the menu displays a contextual hint, which, oddly enough, is quite relevant. When adjusting the image, the menu remains on the screen, which makes it a little difficult to evaluate the changes being made. You can turn off weak background transparency, set a timeout for automatic exit from the menu, and set the repeat mode when you hold the button. The menu can also be moved horizontally and vertically, but there is no point in this, since in the initial position the hint icons on the functions of the buttons on the screen are located approximately opposite the real buttons, which is convenient. There is a shutdown timer (1-23 hours).

There is a Russian version of the on-screen menu.

The Cyrillic font of the menu is smooth and readable. The quality of translation of menu inscriptions into Russian is good. On the included CD-ROM we found user manuals in the form of PDF files (there is a Russian version). In addition, this disk contains a monitor driver (INF and CAT files) and a color correction profile (ICM). On the company's website in the support section we found manuals and drivers.

Image

There are settings Brightness, Contrast And Definition. List MagicBright- these are two preset profiles with combinations Brightness/Contrast, one user, and when selecting a profile Auto contrast Most settings are locked and dynamic brightness control is enabled (brightness increases for bright scenes and decreases for dark scenes).

There is a separate pre-installed profile for games, which is no different from other profiles. Parameter Response time is responsible for matrix overclocking modes. It is possible to select the brightness range for an HDMI connection. Function MagicUpscale with two modes gives the image additional clarity, but also increases the visibility of compression artifacts. On the page Color You can choose one of the preset color temperature profiles or adjust the gain of red, green and blue colors yourself. Settings Gamma determines the current gamma correction profile.

There are two modes of geometric transformation: you can either preserve the original proportions of the image ( Auto), fitting it into the screen to the nearest borders (in practice, to horizontal, and the proportions are calculated by pixel, so a 4:3 PAL or NTSC picture is slightly distorted), or forcefully stretching it to the entire screen ( Wide). For each input separately, you can enable the mode AV, in which the picture is slightly enlarged so that along the perimeter it extends beyond the boundaries of the display area.

With a VGA connection, automatic adjustment to the parameters of the VGA signal is performed quickly and correctly, and the gray scale differs in shades from 0 to 255. Both with VGA and with an HDMI connection (or rather, in our case, via DVI using an adapter cable) Resolution up to 1920×1080 pixels at 60 frames/s is supported. Interpolation of low resolutions to matrix resolution is performed without artifacts. In the 1920 by 1080 pixel mode, brightness and color clarity are the highest possible, there is no additional edge highlighting (if the setting is Definition do not raise above 51). There is no “crystalline” effect (microscopic variation in brightness). The matte surface of the matrix allows you to work comfortably in the case of a typical arrangement of the monitor, user and lamps in the room.

Cinema operating modes were tested using an HDMI connection. The monitor does not accept interlaced 576i and 480i signals, and the 1080i signal is output in field-by-field mode, without advanced conversion to progressive. The monitor supports 576p, 480p, 720p and 1080p modes, but does not support 1080p at 24 fps. Subtle gradations of shades vary in both highlights and shadows. Brightness and color clarity are very high and are determined only by the resolution of the input signal. In 1080p mode, the image is displayed 1:1 without any interpolation. When scaling, no artifacts appear, even partial smoothing of the contours is performed.

LCD matrix testing

Microphotographs of the matrix

It is not possible to obtain a clear image of the pixel structure due to the matte surface, however, if desired, in the fragment below, corresponding to four pixels, you can see the division of the subpixel into two areas and the shape of these areas, characteristic of PLS (IPS version from Samsung):

Focusing on the surface of the screen revealed chaotically located microdefects of the surface, which are responsible for the matte properties:

The grain of these defects is several times smaller than the size of subpixels, so focusing on microdefects and the “jumping” of focus across subpixels when changing the viewing angle are weakly expressed, because of this there is no “crystalline” effect.

Color rendering quality assessment

To assess the nature of the increase in brightness on the gray scale, we measured the brightness of 17 shades of gray at different values of the parameter Gamma. The graph below shows the resulting gamma curves (in the captions, the number in brackets is the indicator of the approximating power function):

The real gamma curve is closest to the standard one when Mode3, so next we measured the brightness of 256 shades of gray (from 0, 0, 0 to 255, 255, 255) at exactly this value. Note that the setting Contrast we set it to 70, since when this value was exceeded, the gamma curve had a noticeable bend in the bright part. The graph below shows the increase (not absolute value!) in brightness between adjacent halftones:

The increase in brightness is on average more or less uniform, and almost every subsequent shade is significantly brighter than the previous one. There is an increase in the brightness of shades in the dark area, although not very uniform:

Approximation of the resulting gamma curve gave the indicator 2,24 , which is close to the standard value of 2.2. In this case, the approximating power function practically coincides with the real gamma curve:

To assess the quality of color rendering, we used the i1Pro 2 and spectrophotometer.

The color gamut is slightly different from sRGB:

However, the deviations of the coordinates of primary colors from the sRGB vertices are not very large, so visually the colors on this monitor have a natural saturation. Below is the spectrum for the white field (white line), superimposed on the spectra of the red, green and blue fields (lines of the corresponding colors).

This spectrum with a relatively narrow peak of blue and wide humps of green and red is typical for monitors that use white LED backlighting with a blue emitter and a yellow phosphor. Color reproduction, even when choosing the best of the preset options, is slightly different from the standard one, so we tried to manually correct the colors by adjusting the gain of the three primary colors. The graphs below show the color temperature at different parts of the gray scale and the deviation from the blackbody spectrum (parameter ΔE) in the case of a profile Normal in the original version and after manual correction:

The range closest to black can be ignored, since color rendering in it is not so important, and the error in measuring color characteristics is high. Manual correction ( Kr. = 49, Green = 42, Syn.= 50) significantly improved color rendering, at least the white point moved even closer to 6500 K and ΔE became less than 3 over the entire significant part of the gray scale.

Measuring black and white uniformity, brightness and power consumption

Brightness measurements were taken at 25 screen points located in increments of 1/6 of the screen width and height (screen borders not included). Contrast was calculated as the ratio of the brightness of the fields at the measured points.

White uniformity is good, but black uniformity, and as a result, contrast, is noticeably worse. The contrast is noticeably higher than typical for an IPS matrix. The photo below gives an idea of the distribution of black field brightness over the screen area:

When you turn on the mode Auto contrast the established contrast formally increases to infinity, since on a black field on the entire screen the backlight is simply turned off (and white areas the size of a mouse cursor are not enough to turn on). The graph below shows how brightness (vertical axis) increases when switching from a black field (the backlight on it is turned off) to white.

The backlight immediately turns on to a certain level, remains unchanged for about 50 ms, and then smoothly and slightly non-linearly increases to the maximum value. There is little practical benefit from this function, but the manufacturer can write the word Mega with an infinity icon.

Brightness of the white field in the center of the screen and power consumption from the network:

In standby mode, the monitor consumes 0,3 W, off - 0,2 Tue.

When decreasing the parameter Brightness Only the brightness of the backlight changes, i.e. Without compromising image quality (contrast and the number of distinguishable gradations are maintained), the brightness of the monitor can be changed within a wide range, which allows you to comfortably work and watch movies in both a lit and dark room. At any brightness level, there is no backlight modulation up to 100 kHz, meaning no flicker at all.

Determining response time and output latency

Response time depends on setting value Response time, which controls the acceleration of the matrix. There are three stages of adjustment. The graph below shows how the on and off times change during the black-white-black transition (bars on And off), as well as the average total time for transitions between some semitones (bars GTG):

From our point of view, the optimal value is the last stage, since even with maximum overclocking the artifacts are hardly noticeable.

The CRT monitor we used to determine output lag had finally given up the ghost. Therefore, we will now use an alternative option for determining the total output delay from switching video buffer pages to the start of displaying the image on the screen. If frame rate synchronization is enabled, the average output latency will include the average delay for video buffer output, which at 60 Hz frame rate is approximately 8 ms.

In this case, with synchronization enabled, we received approximately 12 ms for both connection types. From a practical point of view, we can assume that the image is displayed without delay.

Measuring viewing angles

To find out how screen brightness changes when deviated from perpendicular to the screen, we took a series of measurements of black, white and grayscale brightness at the center of the screen over a wide range of angles, deflecting the sensor axis in the vertical, horizontal and diagonal (corner to corner) directions.

VerticalIn the horizontal plane
DiagonallyBrightness of the black field as a percentage of the maximum brightness of the white field
Contrast

Reducing brightness by 50% of maximum value:

We note a smooth decrease in brightness when deviating from the perpendicular to the screen in the horizontal direction, while the graphs do not intersect over the entire range of measured angles. Brightness decreases slightly faster when deviating in the vertical direction. When deviating in the diagonal direction, the behavior of the brightness of the shades is intermediate between the vertical and horizontal directions, with the exception of the brightness of the black field, which begins to increase sharply already at 20-30° deviation from the perpendicular to the screen. If you sit at a distance of 50-60 cm from the screen, then the black field in the corners will be noticeably lighter than in the center, however, remaining approximately neutral gray in hue. The contrast in the angle range ±82° for two directions significantly exceeds 10:1, and only for the diagonal direction is it lower on average and for one diagonal it drops beyond 10:1 at 70°.

To quantify the change in color rendering, we performed colorimetric measurements for white, gray (127, 127, 127), red, green and blue, as well as light red, light green and light blue fields in the full screen using a setup similar to that , which was used in the previous test. Measurements were carried out in the angle range from 0° (the sensor is directed perpendicular to the screen) to 80° in steps of 5°. The obtained intensity values were recalculated into ΔE relative to the measurement of each field at a perpendicular position of the sensor relative to the screen. The results are presented below:

You can select a deviation of 45° as a reference point, which may be relevant if, for example, the image on the screen is viewed by two people at the same time. The criterion for maintaining the correctness of colors can be considered a value of ΔE less than 3.

From the graphs it follows that with a horizontal and diagonal deviation of 45 degrees, delta E is less than or not much higher than 3 for all shades tested. This color stability is one of the main advantages of PLS-type matrices (and, of course, IPS).

conclusions

The Samsung S24D390HL monitor is worth buying if you like its design with a tinted transparent stand and screen frame. However, in addition to the design, the owner of this device receives a PLS matrix with good, especially after calibration, color rendition, which will attract those who value not only appearance. In general, the monitor can be considered universal, suitable for typical office work, non-professional work with graphics, for watching movies and for games, including dynamic ones.

Advantages:

  • Original design
  • Good color quality
  • No backlight flickering
  • There is a mode with matrix overclocking
  • Minimum Output Latency
  • Russified menu

Flaws:

  • Significant unevenness of the black field
  • No support for 24 fps mode

What I didn't like

My eyes hurt even at 50% brightness and 50% contrast. Compared to the old NEC1970NX monitor, which is now the second monitor, my eyes get much more tired. If you set the eye rest mode, the colors are unnaturally yellow and you lose the ability to adjust the color balance.
The image is sharp, even excessively, pixels are noticeable on the letters. (I configured it several times through the control panel). The colors do not stand up to criticism; even home photos should not be edited with them.
A separate disappointment is the driver. Very small letters and icons compared to the old 1280*1020 monitor (on the new one the resolution is 1920*1080, almost the same in height). If you set a large font in Windows, everything becomes too large. It's annoying.

What I liked

An HDMI cable is included. Neat assembly. No glare. The stand takes up quite a bit of space on the table and wobbles less than its predecessor, the s24d390hl. External power supply - no need to think about whether the system unit's power supply will handle it.

What I didn't like

When playing dynamic videos from YouTube, strong artifacts (horizontal lines) appear on faces

What I didn't like

Got a defective one: light in the corner. Disgusting monitor operating modes. Periodically produces a grainy picture.

What I liked

What I didn't like

Not found.

What I liked

Good picture, optimal size, stylish design, HDMI cable included.

What I didn't like

1) When the computer is turned off, the screen also turns off, but the blue LED at the bottom right continues to blink annoyingly. It's good that it's not bright. I don’t know why Samsung didn’t make an option to turn off LED blinking in the settings menu - after all, in the settings you can also configure the LED to turn on/off when the screen is on.
2) The rightmost section (from top to bottom) of the screen of my copy is a little “cooler” in color than the rest of the space. But this doesn’t really interfere.
3) Black crush (the disappearance of the darkest shades and merging them into one black mess) is quite noticeable.
4) Dark shades are quite dark (in dark places of computer games it is difficult to see the surrounding space), I even use the lightest gamma (not brightness!) of the three available in the monitor settings menu.

What I liked

1) Bright, rich colors (especially after my last TN). 2) My copy did not have any particular unevenness of illumination. 3) For my copy, everything was fine with white and color balance; there was no need to manually adjust the RGB colors. 4) A beautiful stand, translucent blue at the bottom and black plastic at the front.

What I didn't like

There is a small detail that may be unpleasant for someone. You bought this monitor and you’re happy and want to watch a cool movie tonight. The set contains only an HDMI cable, and the video card may not support such an input. Of course, you can buy another cable, but if you don’t have it, the evening will be ruined + a waste of time buying another cable.

What I liked

An excellent monitor for its price, it stands very firmly on the leg, there is a convenient headphone jack on the back of the lid, I was pleased with the settings button. As for the “grain”, everything is easy to adjust, your eyes get tired just like with any other monitor, you just need to get used to it. As for the response in milliseconds, etc. I can’t give you any advice, I took it for work in graphic editors, and it does an excellent job. Colors, contrast, brightness - everything is ok. There were no problems with the drivers, I generally don’t agree with almost all the negative reviews about this model, you just need to take a little time and set it up. I didn’t use the hdmi socket.

What I didn't like

The button for setting up and navigating through the menu is strange, located on the back and more like a joystick. But you only have to set up the monitor once; there is no need to use the joystick regularly.

What I liked

Color rendition, design, size. Availability of HDMI and 3.5 mm audio input. There is no PWM (pencil test), which is a huge plus and a decisive factor when purchasing. And the dollar exchange rate jumped by 2 times, and the monitor went up in price by one and a half times, which is also an important factor.

5.0 rating

Advantages:
- Viewing angles - rating 5 - Picture - 5 - Simple and detailed interface - 5 - Availability of headphone output - 5 - Side USB and HDMI (2 pcs) - 5 - Strong and stable stand - 5 - Sound (which some buyers scold) for This model with a 60cm diagonal and EDGE LED side lighting is very decent. Its 10W is enough for us to listen from the kitchen room. If not enough, connect speakers. - WiFi senses excellent - 5 - In its set of applications you can find a bunch of opportunities for free viewing of movies, TV channels and radio. - if this is not enough, open YouTube or in its browser find sites with films and radio. - Linux-based OS - there is (if I'm not confused) even McAfee antivirus (crappy, but it's better than none) - This is Samsung. those. there is a service and you can be sure of reliability. - There is an automatic OS update, which, however, can be disabled (sometimes it is necessary to prevent the settings of installed applications from being lost) - Can be used as a monitor. - In my category, in my opinion, it is still unrivaled. My wife and I are very pleased with this model.

Flaws:
- The arrow in the browser crawls a bit boringly. - After using a computer and a smartphone, you’ll be fooled by using the keyboard on the screen using the remote control. - For my taste, there are not enough options in the browser. However, this is not a computer, so it’s not worth demanding that it be a computer.

A comment:
REVIEW HAS BEEN REJECTED FOR THE 5TH TIME!!! AND WHERE DO YOU SEE information about the place of purchase of the goods???????????????????? I reviewed almost all the 24" models with SmartTV currently available in Moscow and definitely settled on this TV. For anyone who wants a larger screen and even better functionality and reliability, I can recommend the T27H390SI or UE32M5500 (this one has excellent sound and does not slow down the processor). capacious graphics in films), but they are already much more expensive (~18,000 and ~25,000 rubles). Links for those who are looking at this model: 1) You can find good reviews of this model with photos or videos on the Internet. . 2) hotline of the MANUFACTURER of this model (Sumsung): 8005555555 There are some competent guys, but there are also completely crude ones, turning on the TV, he told me that the contrast of the matrix is from 1 to 100.. 3) There are Samsung support pages for this model, where you can download instructions in Russian, updates, ask questions and see the answers: go to the support page and enter LT24H390SIXXRU 4) A very sensible site with detailed characteristics of TVs and explanations of what these specifications mean: displayspecifications_com (and select Russian) It doesn't matter whether you find your model there or not. In any case, you will be able to better understand what you are purchasing and compare your model in terms of parameters with other models. 5) Please note that not all sellers provide their data on Yandex Market.
