The best Lenovo gaming laptops: a review of the best models

Now it will be even more convenient to rake in the mid lane!

Lenovo held a presentation of its new products aimed at the most sophisticated gamers in one of the bars in the center of Moscow.

The event differed from boring presentations in that on the presented samples of new laptops, all the journalists, bloggers and simply sympathizers who came could fight the bloody Mortal Kombat X and the dynamic “Fifa” 2016 at maximum graphics settings. And even win valuable prizes.

Why Lenovo? Why now?

From year to year, the market volume of the gaming industry is constantly increasing. If in 2011 about 20 billion dollars were circulating in this area, then already in 2013, income from “toys” exceeded the income of Hollywood, with all its blockbusters and box office receipts. In 2016, analysts project revenue of $95 billion.

Compared to other segments computer market these amounts are more than impressive. New games are like spectacular films, software for image processing, physics and effects is constantly improving, and it is important for a modern gamer that his gaming machine can cope with all the new gaming products without lags and, preferably, at maximum graphics.

Lenovo could not stay away from this big piece market, having many years of experience in the production of computers and peripheral devices for various needs of users in the home and corporate segments. And while other companies are just about to present their solutions for ideal gaming, Lenovo is already showing real technical “cars” of the new “Y” series that can make even the most sophisticated gamer rejoice.

Gaming laptops

The line of portable gaming “machines” is represented by three models - a simpler one, an average version and a top-end one, capable of handling the most spectacular and dynamic gaming scenes without any problems.

The entry-level gaming laptop is available in white or black and has impressive features:

  • Supports up to 6th generation Intel® Core™ i7 processors (maximum configuration)
  • Up to 4 hours of battery life on a standard battery
  • Up to 16 GB DDR4 memory
  • 15.6 inch IPS display FHD with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 (maximum configuration)
  • Hard drive or hybrid SSHD drive up to 1 TB or up to 256 GB PCIe SSD
  • NVIDIA GeForce 950M GTX video card (maximum configuration)
  • Weight from 2.3 kg, thickness 22.7 mm

In addition to these features, the laptop is equipped with acoustics from JBL. The sound is loud and quite spacious, you can play without connecting external speakers. The keyboard is mechanical, designed for 10 million keystrokes, with a pleasant stroke. The only negative is the touchpad. This is clearly not the strong point of gaming laptops, so this element is completely ordinary, as in most less cool laptops.

The intermediate model looks more brutal, has a red backlit keyboard and rubberized buttons. The peculiarity of this model is the thoughtful cooling of powerful components, which makes the Ideapad Y700 virtually silent during any resource-intensive tasks.

There is a magic “Turbo” button on the keyboard panel, which turns on the increased productivity. In a matter of moments, the processor power, the amount of available RAM, and the graphics capabilities are enhanced.

The wide-angle display with anti-glare coating has an increased viewing angle of almost 180°. Of course, the laptop comes with built-in JBL speakers with Dolby® Home Theater® technology.

This is a real monster. A productive machine that can compete with the top gaming laptops of the “Alienware” series from Dell. In addition to all the features present in the models described above, this 17-inch laptop has a fully customizable keyboard backlight, it can be overclocked to sky-high CPU performance, and it also has an absolutely amazing aluminium case with red trim elements.

This is the only laptop in my memory that has 64 gigabytes of RAM out of the box. Sixty-four gigs. On the laptop. It's very productive.

Inside the Ideapad Y900 are two of Samsung's fastest 512GB SSD drives (950 PRO), connected in RAID 0 for exceptional power and performance. Data reading speed is approaching 3 gigabytes per second. Whole recorded DVD disc reads in a second. Forget about loading screens between levels in games. This is truly the speed limit.

This model also features a highly efficient cooling system that adjusts fan speed and maintains optimal temperatures to improve performance and ease of use of the laptop. All the elements of the Ideapad Y900 together provide a truly new experience from the latest AAA games.

And that is not all

In addition to the new line of high-performance laptops, the event featured a home gaming PC with two graphics cards top level, working in parallel with each other. The aggressive, backlit design is conveniently designed for easy access to the filling and subsequent upgrade as desired.

Lenovo did not forget about peripherals - you could touch them at the stand gaming keyboard, mouse and wired headset, made in the same aggressive visual style for the “Y” series.

Of course, to appreciate the full power of these products, a few fights in Mortal Kombat X are not enough; I would run around in Doom or Tom Clansy’s Division, where landscapes and weather at maximum graphics settings are a serious test for any computer. Alas, we will have to wait until one of the new products arrives for a full review. I say goodbye to everyone in advance, for about a week until I complete 3-4 games with new sensations on the latest gaming laptop.

In 2017 series Y gaming laptops from Lenovo have been replenished with two more models - the older one Y720 and younger Y520. In addition, a sonorous word appeared in the names of devices Legion, and on the official website now under the brand Legion by Lenovo the company offers whole gaming systems- Not only gaming laptops, but also all kinds of accessories - gaming mice, keyboards, headphones and even monitors with curved screens. And all this is also Y series.

But let's leave marketing for now and move on to specifics - the site is testing one of the new gaming laptops - Lenovo Legion Y520.

Appearance, design, functionality

The device body is made in black with the addition of red, “aggressive” accents (edging of the keyboard buttons, touchpad, power button, keyboard layout). At the same time, when closed, the case does not have any “flashy” elements, and almost does not indicate that it belongs to the gaming series - except perhaps by an increased number of stiffening ribs in the design of the air ducts and stereo speakers.

The body is made of plastic, but the texture of all surfaces is different. The top side of the lid and the bottom edge are stylized carbon fiber, the strip between the hinges and keys F1-F12– looks like polished metal; the rest of the working surface, framing the keyboard and touchpad, has a pleasant, matte soft-touch coating.

There is nothing special about the plastic around the perimeter of the screen, except that it is unexpectedly large in area (the distance from the edges of the lid to the screen is 16 mm on the sides, 25 mm on the bottom, from 15 to 27 mm on the top).

The bulk of the laptop is concentrated at the bottom, which has its pros and cons. From positive points, the device can be freely opened with one hand, and the hinges perfectly hold the lightweight lid, dampening possible vibrations. On the other hand, the design of the cover lacks rigidity - when pressed from the outside, the plastic bends, leaving traces of the keyboard buttons on the screen, and the plastic edge of it (the screen) can be easily pryed off with a fingernail. There are no complaints about the design of the base unit - everything is made tightly, firmly, without backlash.

The laptop is equipped with a slightly stripped-down 96-key island-style keyboard. Buttons good size, with sufficient distance between them, have a clear and quiet move. The cursor control keys are large in size, which is done for the sake of their frequent use in games. Keys WSAD have standard size, but are highlighted by a wider border. Other features of the keyboard, if these points are important to someone:

- Enter rectangular, larger in size than Backspace, but less than right Shift;

Rights Ctrl, Shift And Alt more relevant left;

- Esc slightly separated from the keys F1- F12, Delete is located next to F12;

- Insert, PrintScrn, Break And Pause combined with the number pad keys, and PageUp, PageDown, Home And End– with cursor control keys;

There is an indication Caps Lock , Num Lock;

Instead of the right Windows button, there is a special video recording key.

In combination with a key Fn function block F1- F12 performs the following functions: locking the computer, switching to offline (“airplane”) mode, adjusting brightness, turning off and adjusting volume, disabling the touchpad, microphone, camera, controlling image output, refreshing the page. In addition, with Fn button functions can work Insert, PrintScrn, Break, Pause, PageUp, PageDown, Home And End.

English and Russian layouts are made in the same red color. The visibility of red on a black background is not very contrasting, but the problem is solved by the existing keyboard backlight (activated by the combination Fn+Space).

The touchpad size is 107x74 mm. Its texture is close to the keyboard buttons, but more sliding. The left and right buttons are made of plastic, the surfaces are glossy. The buttons in the corners are pressed (the action is clear), so the dividing red mark on them is very conventional. The existing triangular “extensions” of the buttons have a decorative function. Because of them, by the way, it visually seems that the touchpad is tilted towards the user, but this is not the case.

Looking ahead, we note that the touchpad understands a number of gestures, and in its settings you can launch functions Pressure Graph And MoodPad

Let's move on to the side edges of the device. Its front edge is not clearly defined, as it is rounded. And, in any case, there is nothing remarkable there.

The air duct outlets are located on the rear edge; the copper plates of the radiators are clearly visible through the holes in the plastic.

All connectors and interface ports, as well as device indication elements, are located on the sides. On right side laptop you can see a full HDMI, two USB 3.0 type A ports, a card reader, USB port 3.1 type C, LED power indicator.

On the left side there is a Kensington Lock, a power connector with an LED indicator, a LAN port, a USB 2.0 type A port, a 3.5 mm jack for connecting headphones/microphone, a button Novo(launching the recovery system, setting up the BIOS, entering the boot menu).

Produce Maintenance The laptop will have to be installed globally - there are no compartments at the bottom with quick-release covers. To access the internal components, 13 screws are unscrewed and the bottom cover is completely removed. Even the battery cannot be replaced quickly.

The laptop is turned on with the power button located in the upper right corner. This model comes with DOS OS on board, but the laptop arrived for testing with Windows 10 Pro already installed - apparently, the device has already been tested by someone.

Thanks to modern hardware, and especially a fast SSD drive, the OS loads in 6-8 seconds (reboots in 15 seconds). During work, during downtime and tasks that do not require high power, the laptop is quite quiet - you can hear the slight rustling of the fans and occasionally the HDD. During resource-intensive tasks (without further ado, a stress test of the computer was launched), the cooling system begins to operate at maximum speed. I wouldn't say it interferes, but I can hear it well.

Under prolonged heavy loads, the laptop naturally heats up, but not critically. The hand area remains comfortable, but the right one top corner(in the area of the digital block) heats up more, especially from the bottom, on the back side - so, for example, playing on a laptop while holding it on your lap may be uncomfortable. I liked that the hot air is discharged from the back, and not from the side, and will not heat up your hands in games when the laptop is placed on a table and with a mouse connected.

15.6-inch screen equipped IPS matrix with a resolution of 1920x1080, demonstrates good horizontal and vertical viewing angles. But the brightness adjustment range is very small, and the contrast is average. The rendered colors seem a little dull and somehow lack depth. In general, the screen in a laptop is not its strong point.

Two speakers located in the corners of the base unit produce not loud, but quite clear sound. Having installed the laptop directly in front of you, from a distance of 0.6-0.7 m you can quite feel the stereo effect, so the built-in acoustics are quite enough for high-quality sound in the near zone.

The laptop is equipped with a built-in web camera located on top of the display. To the right and left of it are microphone holes, and almost next to the lens is an LED indicator that glows white when the camera is operating. The camera image quality is quite sufficient for communicating in instant messengers and social networks.

Testing

Traditionally, we first study the hardware.

The device uses a quad-core Intel processor Core-i7 7700HQ architecture Kaby Lake, produced using a 14 nm process technology. The nominal frequency is 2.8 GHz, and in Turbo Boost mode – 3.8/3.6/3.4 GHz (in single-, dual- and quad-core modes, respectively). Hyper-Threading technology is supported (8 threads), the processor TDP is 45 W.

Integrated graphics Intel HD Graphics 630 operates at a frequency of (350-1100) MHz and contains 24 execution units. There is support for DirectX 12 and OpenGL 4.4.

An excellent addition to such a processor is the installed 16 GB of DDR4 RAM from Hyundai Electronics and discrete video card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti with 4 GB of GDDR5 memory (768 execution units, 1493 MHz, DirectX 12, OpenGL 4.5). And to top it off - two drives, fast Samsung SSD MZVLW128HEGR with 128 GB as a system drive and a spacious ST1000LM035 with 1 TB from Seagate for data storage.

Despite the anticipation of good testing results, taking into account the described hardware, we will begin testing with networking opportunities and let's see how the Realtek PCIe GBE and Intel AC 8265 adapters work. The channel throughput was measured between a laptop with a LAN adapter and network storage, then between a laptop with a WLAN adapter and network storage. In the “gap” there was a gigabit switch and Beltelecom MT-PON-AT-4. The settings of the LAN and WLAN adapters were reset to factory settings, and large media files were transmitted over the network (download - red, upload - green).

LAN adapter:

WLAN adapter:

I would like more, but it’s still not bad, after all, the already “seen life” router is in the “gap”.

The performance of the drives pleased me; the HDD and an excellent SSD showed good results.

The autonomy of the laptop was assessed by simply measuring the time until the battery was completely discharged in games and while watching videos. The power plan in the OS was set to “balanced” mode.

Type of test

Device battery life

Game (CoD: Infinite Warfare)

Watch video

A good result, considering that this is still not a lightweight ultrabook for surfing and work, but a gaming device with the appropriate filling.

Yes, the rather modern shooter Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (the game was released in November 2016) was launched on the laptop for testing. It all started with an excellent 60 FPS, but gradually drops appeared to 20-30 FPS. However, we note that the game is quite new, it was launched on a laptop in offline mode, and the settings were set to the maximum level.

Finally, I tested using benchmarks overall performance laptop.

PCMark 7, seven different tests were run:

PCMark test - overall performance;

Lightweight test – a test for less powerful systems;

Entertainment test - performance in games and when working with media data;

Creativity test – system performance when working with video and graphics;

Productivity test – performance when working with web pages and office applications;

Computation test – computing performance;

Storage test - performance when working with HDD.

PCMark 8, the following load scenarios were used:

Home – performance when performing tasks typical for home work (surfing, working with text editors, image editing, casual games, video chat);

Creative – performance on tasks where content is not only consumed, but also created (surfing, batch editing images, video editing, converting audio and video files, games, group video chat);

Work – productivity when performing tasks typical for office performance.

The second result in each scenario (Accelerated) shows how much performance improved if OpenCL was used in testing using the GPU.

Test results When compared with energy-efficient universal ultrabooks in terms of mobility and battery life, a powerful gaming laptop doesn’t have much of a chance. Thus, the Lenovo Legion Y520 turned out to be the underdog in our rating of laptops costing more than 40,000 rubles (ichip.ru/test-noutbukov-ot-500-evro-full), but this underdog should be quite interesting, in particular, to novice gamers. Benefits of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti SSD and HDD discrete graphics card quiet system cooling Disadvantages poor battery life Test results Lenovo Legion Y520-15IKBN (80WK0042GE) Price/quality ratio Average Place in overall rating 29 out of 50 Price/quality ratio: 57 Mobility (25%): 25.8 Equipment (25%): 88.8 Performance (15%): 91.8 Ergonomics (15%): 86 Display (20%): 77.6 Test results Give a rating - 71 % Editorial rating - User rating You have already rated it Please share a link to this rating so that the results of your vote are counted Gaming for Beginners

The Lenovo Legion Y520 in the configuration we tested draws its gaming power from a combination of a Core i5-7300HQ (2.5 GHz) processor, 8 GB of DDR4 RAM and graphics card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti with 4 GB of video memory.

In addition, the 128 GB SSD storage provides fast loading operating system Windows and fast application launch. There's room to store your game library on the optional 1TB hard drive.

The gaming mouse and external hard drives can be connected via the following interfaces: 2 x USB3.0, 1 x USB 3.0 Typ-C and 1 x USB 2.0. An HDMI port is available for use as a connector for outputting images to a gaming monitor.

In addition to the SDXC card reader, the Legion Y520 case also has room for a gigabit Ethernet port. The gaming headset can be connected via a microphone/headphone combo jack or Bluetooth 4.1. Data transmission over the WLAN network is carried out via an 802.11 ac adapter.

When assessing performance in the 3DMark benchmark Cloud Gate The product, called Legion Y520, earns a good fifth place with 16,132 points. Only more powerful gaming solutions can surpass this result.

Those who want to squeeze a little more performance out of the Lenovo Legion can increase the size of the RAM - after all, the laptop supports up to 16 GB.

The Legion's lackluster battery life alone prevents it from being a true everyday companion.

Playing with Legion

In addition to synthetic benchmarks, we spent eight hours playing games on this laptop. At the same time, we did not record any disturbing fps drops or other signs of insufficient performance. First of all, novice gamers will be pleased with the beautiful HD resolution and low costs. The GeForce GTX 1050 Ti has enough capabilities for modern games, but, of course, with slightly reduced graphics settings.

For top-level gaming, you should still take gaming laptops equipped with at least an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060. An example of such a model could well be the “big brother” of the Legion Y520, which is called the Lenovo Legion Y720.

Keyboard and display

It will be a pleasant surprise during many hours of gaming Feedback from the keyboard and the relatively quiet cooling system of the Legion Y520. A quiet fan is anything but a given for gaming laptops. The quality of the chassis gives a pleasant feeling of luxury and elegance.

The 15.6-inch display with a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels passed our test trials also with good results. In particular, he can boast matte surface screen, maximum brightness at 255 cd/m2 and reaches a checkerboard contrast ratio of 163:1. At the same time, when watching dark scenes in films, it becomes noticeable that the contrast, generally speaking, could have been higher.

As is usual for gaming laptops, the WASD keys are highlighted in color. It's as if gamers themselves don't know where the most important keyboard buttons are

Achilles' heel - battery life

The Legion Y520's Achilles' heel, like many other gaming laptops, is its battery life. In particular, when tested using the so-called “Word” scenario, a 45 Wh battery could last only 5 hours and 22 minutes.

The measurement results during video playback (4 hours 52 minutes) also turned out to be not the most surprising and can serve as some guideline for estimating the duration of gaming. In some of the most resource-demanding games, battery life is seriously reduced and can be as short as 2 hours.

There is a Kensington lock and a Noble connector on board

Alternative

Legion that can do more: Lenovo Legion Y720-15IKB (80VR002XGE)

The Legion Y720 with its NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 not only has better performance for modern games, but is also suitable for running virtual reality applications.

During hands-on testing, gaming on the Lenovo Legion Y720 was pleasantly fast and smooth. Pleasantly surprised us here too quiet fan, which is rather an exceptional case for gaming laptops. The sound from the built-in JBL speakers Dolby Atmos also greatly contributes to immersion in music and game worlds. I even got to the segment mobile computers. There are still ongoing debates about whether there is any point in buying a gaming laptop. And in some cases, supporters of a full-fledged PC win, because a gaming laptop is a very expensive pleasure. Luckily for us, there is a company that is ready to offer good solutions for reasonable money. Its name is Lenovo. Lenovo is powerful and reasonably priced. And for many of our compatriots, cost is the decisive factor.

Line of gaming laptops from Lenovo

This company is somehow not particularly noticeable compared to others in terms of producing gaming laptop models. But she has them, and they are of very good quality. Of course, they do not reach the level of Dell or Asus, but they are not so expensive. And what's the use of an overly powerful laptop? What to do with him? Use as a heater? Be that as it may, gaming laptops from Lenovo can easily provide comfortable gaming at maximum settings.

Prominent representatives of products for gamers are the Y series laptops. They are the ones that can satisfy their needs. Lenovo is deservedly popular in narrow circles, because the most advanced users prefer another manufacturer. But Lenovo also has some trump cards up its sleeve. Let's look at some of the most interesting models.

"Lenovo U900"

This laptop is almost the most powerful among the entire gaming line from Lenovo. Judge for yourself: gaming laptops are equipped with an i7 processor from Intel, have up to 64 gigabytes of RAM on board and NVidia video adapter with 8 gigabytes of video memory. Not bad for a laptop? Other features include a tandem of an SSD drive (512 gigabytes) and HDD capacity (1 terabyte). This combination of drives has a very beneficial effect on the speed of the system as a whole. Because a high-speed SSD is used for the operating system and games, and a slow HDD is needed for data storage.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y900 gaming laptop comes equipped with high-quality screen with TN matrix and Full HD resolution. This will be comfortable not only to play, but also to work and watch movies. Of course, there is no talk of any energy-saving factor. The laptop's battery is only enough to carry it from one outlet to another. But this is the problem with all gaming laptops. It is impossible to imagine a gaming laptop without being tied to an outlet. And it’s not the manufacturers who are to blame here, but the total power of the hardware installed in the laptop.

"Lenovo U700"

This model came out a little earlier than the nine hundredth, and therefore is positioned as a device for more moderate tasks. But still, the Lenovo IdeaPad Y700 gaming laptop is capable of running games with above-average settings. The most powerful processor from Intel, an impressive amount of RAM, a tandem of drives various types and a very powerful video card make it possible to do this. In all other respects, the laptop is trying hard to pretend with a regular device. When closed, it is almost impossible to distinguish it from a regular, average laptop. This was probably the intention. Its belonging to the gaming segment can only be revealed by the air intakes on rear end and a completely metal body.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y700 17ISK gaming laptop has a very high-quality 17-inch display with Full HD resolution. Surprisingly, the colors appear correctly. Most laptops these days show who knows what, but Lenovo tried to equip the gaming device with a high-quality display. Among other features, it should be noted that high quality sound. The built-in subwoofer does its job. You can use laptops in this series to watch movies even without using third-party speakers or headphones. The sound quality allows this.

Scope of application for gaming laptops from Lenovo

The question is, of course, strange. But first of all, such powerful devices are used to run games. However, do not forget that laptops are universal, multifunctional devices. And Lenovo gaming laptops are no exception. They can be used for the most different tasks. And they will especially prove themselves when performing resource-intensive tasks, such as video editing. Their capacity is enough for anything. However, you should not compare them with full-fledged PCs. Because the mobile filling is at least a little weaker than the full-size components.

The only thing these laptops are not suitable for is for use as laptop computer. Because due to the very powerful filling, Lenovo gaming laptops do not last long. And any gaming laptop is susceptible to this disease. He spends energy without ceremony. And no super-capacious battery will help here. So gaming laptops are strictly for stationary use. However, it is not difficult to build a multimedia station from such a device. It can be a worthy replacement for a stationary personal computer. Especially if you choose a model with a 17-inch screen diagonal.

Why Lenovo?

A legitimate question: why should we choose the products of this particular company? There is an answer to this, and more than one. And don’t be afraid that the company is Chinese. If things go their way, then soon all equipment will be produced under the Lenovo brand. They already bought Motorola. Without high-quality and inexpensive equipment in their product range, it is unlikely that they would have reached such heights.

Despite the fact that the company is Chinese, the reliability of its products has been known for a long time. The build quality is also undeniable. Everything is done well, nothing creaks or falls off anywhere. A miracle, not a technique. And, of course, the price. Lenovo products are traditionally not unavailable. Almost everyone can afford it.

Conclusion

At the moment, Lenovo products are leaders in the mobile device market. Even in the laptop camp, her gadgets are very popular. The company was able to achieve this due to the adequate cost of products, high-quality assembly and the presence of high technology. Gaming laptops from this Chinese company belong to the category of “must-have” devices. In addition to high performance, they are characterized by versatility and reasonable cost. This is what allows them to look more attractive than their competitors.
