The final update for windows 10 mobile. What's new in the latest build version

On April 25, Microsoft began distributing the next major update to the Windows 10 Mobile operating system. As on computers, this update is called the Creators Update, and there are no innovations for creativity in it (Creators - creators). And in general, we can say that there are no major innovations here. Despite this, we have the latest version of Windows 10 Mobile.

The Creators Update is the second major feature update for Windows 10 Mobile smartphones. Unlike the previous update, which was large, this is a smaller release, like the ones Apple releases on its smartphones every few months. This means there are a few small improvements, but nothing special here. It shouldn't have been this way, but Microsoft's interest in Windows 10 is steadily declining.

General improvements

Externally, the system has hardly changed. A lot of work has been done internally to make it run smoother and have fewer bugs. For this reason, the Creators Update can be called the best version of Windows 10 Mobile, as it should be with the latest version.

Thanks to the Creators Update, older devices like the Lumia 640 perform better than ever. This almost never happens on other platforms. Typically, when updates appear on iPhones, older models start to run slower or have shorter battery life. In this case, the opposite is true, the device works faster and longer.

Windows Hello has also been sped up. Previously, you had to hold the Lumia 950 in front of your face to unlock it using your eyes, but now you can simply hold the smartphone in your hand and look at it. You don't need to put in any more effort.

There have been improvements to the HTTP display in live tiles, and the option to Call Back, Write and Remind for missed calls has appeared in the notification center. Thanks to this, you do not need to specifically open the Phone application every time there is a missed call.

There are new system sounds, the same as on computers. Thus, Microsoft tries not to forget even about such little things, since it is on their basis that the impression of the operating system is formed. The new sounds are a breath of fresh air that users should appreciate.

One of the best new features is the ability to lock and turn off the screen while using Continuum. To do this, you just need to press the power button. If you quickly press it twice, the Continuum screen will also be locked. You can set the time for the Continuum screen to run.

Cortana

The digital assistant in the new update has become a little smarter than before. You can now ask Cortana to activate system commands, change volume, control audio, and recognize music. The assistant already knew how to do the latter task, but now you can recognize songs using voice commands. You can set reminders for every month or year.

The Cortana interface has received a completely black background instead of dark gray, which should slightly increase the battery life of devices with OLED screens. There was nothing else interesting about the assistant. There is no ability to continue working from the same place on different devices, which is available on computers.

Edge browser

On the surface, there are few changes to the Microsoft Edge browser. On the computer there is a button to put aside tabs, but in the mobile version it is not there. There are innovations related to e-books.

A separate bookshelf has appeared in the browser, where all purchased or downloaded books are stored. Reading mode is quite functional. There's a new read-aloud feature that will come in handy for people with vision problems or if you're just too lazy to read yourself.

The Windows Store itself has a separate section for books, where you can buy books to read in the browser. It is unclear why Microsoft decided to build this functionality into the browser instead of creating a separate application and why it plans to compete with Amazon and Apple in the book market.

Settings

The Settings app on smartphones has received several changes and improvements. The previous Wi-Fi section has been removed, replaced by a more advanced Wi-Fi section with an interface similar to that on computers. A single interface will make it easier to work with settings. The Wi-Fi Control function and paid Wi-Fi services are combined in one section, the mobile Internet page has received a new interface. In the devices section, Microsoft has improved the Bluetooth interface, making it cleaner and adding an easier setup option. Unfortunately, problems with Bluetooth connections have not been resolved, although they are not observed on all smartphones.

The Glance function can now be always on while charging. You can't call it new; it was returned to the system in the Creators Update. Glance Screen was mostly removed in the Anniversary Update, but functionality is slowly returning, like the ability to leave the screen on while charging.

There is a new category Applications where you can remove and reset installed programs. The reset option helps when applications become corrupted and need to be returned to the state they were in immediately after installation.

There is a new sidebar feature that appears below the main content of the settings page. It is called a sidebar because on computers it is shown on the side. On smartphones this happens at the bottom. Here are links to help and other settings that may be related to those currently open. For example, in the Bluetooth section there is a link to Wi-Fi settings.

Windows Update

With the Windows 10 Mobile Creators Update, Microsoft has made several changes to Windows Update. For example, you can delay installing updates for up to 35 days to ensure they don't impact your device's performance. Additionally, Windows will no longer surprise users with sudden messages asking them to install updates. Warnings about this will appear when the update is ready to install.

For example, if an update has been downloaded and installation requires a reboot. The system will tell you about this before a reboot is required, so that you have time to prepare for it. You can choose the time to install the update so as not to interrupt your work with your smartphone at an inconvenient moment.

The major changes to Windows Update are hidden under the hood. Microsoft has introduced a new unified update platform that will reduce the size of major updates by up to 35%. This is good news for users with limited traffic or slow connection speeds.

View 3D

There is a new application that allows you to view content created in Paint 3D. The Paint 3D application itself is not available on smartphones. It is only available on personal computers, so View 3D can be considered useless. Its sole purpose is to view what users have created in Paint 3D. It is unlikely that many users will download this content from computers to smartphones in order to admire it in View 3D.

Conclusion

The bottom line is that the Windows 10 Mobile Creators Update is a concern. Of course, the improvements presented make the operating system somewhat better, but many users expected more. This was supposed to be a major update for smartphones, just like it was on computers. Instead, Microsoft didn't deliver many of the promised features, like the blue light filter that was coming to PCs.

In addition, even the improvements made will not reach many devices where they could be useful. The update applies to only 13 smartphone models, which do not include the Lumia 930, 830 and 1520.

In that case, what is the point of this update? It doesn’t bring anything particularly interesting; it was quite possible to live without the minor changes made. Microsoft says it will continue to work on Windows 10 Mobile, but this update is not encouraging.

Actions speak louder than words. Why is this update called the Creators Update on smartphones, when there is nothing new for creative work - neither Paint 3D nor Windows Ink?

Everything looks like this update was the last thing worked on. I would like to believe that next time it will be better, but for now it looks like Microsoft has ceased to be interested in smartphones and the same nondescript update will be released in the fall. Owners of smartphones that won't receive the Creators Update shouldn't worry about missing out on much. The Anniversary Update was quite good, and this is a minor follow-up to it. There's nothing truly new here. Despite this, this version of Windows 10 Mobile is the best of all.

The appearance of Windows 10 Mobile in 2015 allowed smartphones running Microsoft software to gain new capabilities. Now their functionality is comparable to computers on the same platform. And the new operating system is also different in the frequency of new versions - not every few years, but 1-2 times a year. Moreover, even after updating Windows 10 Mobile, the name of the platform remains the same. Only the version number changes and, sometimes, the build, of which there are now three - 1507, 1511 and 1607. And in April 2017, Windows 10 Mobile 1704 is expected to be released. The name of each build consists of two digits - the year and month of its release.

Where can I find information about Windows 10 Mobile updates?

To determine which version of the update is currently current, you can use information from the official Microsoft page. Starting in 2017, here is a history of the latest changes to the operating system, including platforms for PCs and mobile gadgets. In this list you can find serious additions, released in entire packages 1-2 times a year, and the latest cumulative update, which appears much more often for Windows 10 Mobile, designed to fix minor vulnerabilities and errors.

The decision to create such a page was made by company representatives after receiving a number of reviews from users of the mobile and standard versions of the operating system. At first, the data was available only in English, but now information about platform updates can also be read in Russian. As a result, it has become easier for users to control the occurrence of changes by promptly updating the software of their tablets and smartphones.

Official updates for Windows Mobile builds 1511 and 1607

The manufacturer's page contains information about the latest Windows 10 Mobile update, what's new in it, and what new features the developer has added. Thus, the newest version of the Anniversary Update, released in July 2016 (build 1607) offers:

  • improved playback of music files;
  • solving the problem with the screen not turning on after checking fingerprints;
  • ability to work with multiple certificates through one interface;
  • full communication of the smart card module with contactless devices for reading them;
  • enabling web page shortcuts using the IE browser when working in Enhanced Protected Mode.

For this, the latest build of Windows 10 Mobile, the latest update number is 14393.693. ID – KB3213986, release date – January 10, 2017. At the same time, you can also find updates for older builds on the page. For example, for Windows 10 version 1511, to which the latest upgrade with number 10586.545 (identifier KB3176493) was released on August 9, 2016. The first build of Windows 10 for mobile devices, 1507 (July 2015), has not been supported by the manufacturer since 2017. And packages for fixing errors and vulnerabilities are not released for it.

Despite the almost monthly appearance of new versions of Windows 10 Mobile, reviews left for the latest updates show that not all of them are successful. Thus, users report that after installing patch 14393.693, some applications did not start. To solve the problem, I had to use the Recovery Tool utility. The developer reports that in the new build 1704 all these errors will be corrected.

Windows 10 Mobile updates by evaluation program

In addition to official updates available for download from Microsoft, the company releases versions only for participants in the testing program. These users have different access levels:

  • “early” – the group that receives packages with the newest features and, generally, with a large number of bugs;
  • “late” – to receive already fixed updates;
  • “pre-release” – for testing packages before the official release.

Currently, the latest Windows Phone 10 Mobile update for testing programs, released on March 3, 2017, is number 15047. For the PC version of the operating system, patch number 15051 has already appeared. At the same time, downloading updates for “late” testing (Slow Ring) is available and for ordinary users on the developer’s website.

You can find out which patch package is installed on your smartphone using the settings menu. To do this, go to the About section. The number of the installed update (OS Build) will be indicated here. And using the Phone Update section, you can find out which package is available for installation and download it to your smartphone.

The choice of operating systems on mobile devices is quite limited. Usually it depends directly on the device model, so switching to a different operating system is not always possible. This further limits user choice. Therefore, the entry of Windows 10 Mobile into the market was good news for them.

Official phone update to Windows 10 Mobile

Before proceeding with the update itself, you should make sure that your device supports Windows 10 Mobile. You can install this operating system on most devices that support Windows 8.1, and more precisely, on the following models:

  • lumia 1520, 930, 640, 640XL, 730, 735, 830, 532, 535, 540, 635 1GB, 638 1GB, 430, 435;
  • BLU Win HD w510u;
  • BLU Win HD LTE x150q;

You can find out if your device supports the official update to Windows 10 Mobile by using the Update Advisor app. It is available on the official Microsoft website at the link: https://www.microsoft.com/ru-ru/store/p/upgrade-advisor/9nblggh0f5g4. It makes sense to use it, since Windows 10 Mobile sometimes appears on new devices that were not previously available for updating.

The program will check the possibility of upgrading your phone to Windows 10 Mobile and help free up space for its installation

Upgrade to Windows 10 Mobile using the Upgrade Assistant app

This application previously allowed you to update unsupported devices as well. Unfortunately, this opportunity was closed about a year ago. At the moment, you can only update those devices to Windows Mobile 8.1 for which installation of Windows 10 Mobile is available.
Before you begin the update, complete a number of preparatory steps:

  • through the Windows Store, update all applications installed on your phone - this will help avoid many problems with their operation and updating after switching to Windows 10 Mobile;
  • make sure you have a stable connection to the network, since if the network is disrupted, there is a risk of errors appearing in the installation files of the new operating system;
  • free up space on your device: to install the update you will need about two gigabytes of free space;
  • connect the phone to an external power source: if it runs out of power during the update, it will cause damage;
  • Do not press any buttons or interact with the phone in any way during the update;
  • Be patient - if the update takes too long, don't panic and interrupt the installation.

Violating any of these rules may damage your device. Be careful and careful: only you are responsible for your phone.

When all the preparatory steps are completed, you can proceed directly to installing the update on your phone. To do this, do the following:

  1. From the official Microsoft website, install the Update Assistant application on your phone.
  2. Launch the application. Read the available information and the Windows 10 Mobile license agreement, and then click Next.
  3. It will check for updates for your device. If your phone is compatible with Windows 10 Mobile, you can move on to the next step.

    If an update is available, you will see a message about it on the screen and you can start the installation

  4. Press Next again to download the update to your phone.

    The update will be found and downloaded before installation begins

  5. Once the update download is complete, installation will begin. It can last more than an hour. Wait for the installation to complete without pressing any buttons on your phone.

    While the device is updating, the screen will display an image of rotating gears.

As a result, Windows 10 Mobile will be installed on the phone. It may not contain the latest updates, so you will have to install them yourself. This is done like this:

  1. After installation is complete, make sure that the device is fully accessible and operational: all programs should work on it.
  2. Open your phone settings.
  3. In the “Updates and Security” section, select the option to work with updates.
  4. After checking for updates, your device will be updated to the latest version of Windows 10 Mobile.
  5. Wait until the updated applications finish downloading, after which you can use your device.

Problems updating to Windows 10 Mobile

During installation of a new operating system, the user may encounter problems. Let's look at the most common of them along with their solutions.

This problem can occur for various reasons. For example, due to corruption of update files, phone settings failure, etc. To resolve, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure there is enough space on your phone to install the operating system.
  2. Check the quality of your connection to the network - it should be stable and allow you to download large amounts of data (for example, downloading over a 3G network rather than Wi-Fi does not always work correctly).
  3. Reset your phone: go to the settings menu, select “Device Information” and press the “Reset Settings” button, which will delete all data on the device and return the settings to factory defaults.

Usually it indicates a lack of free space on the device, but sometimes it occurs due to incompatibility between the phone's firmware and the current update version. In this case, you need to stop the installation and wait for the release of the next version.

If error code 80070002 appears, check the date and time on your device

This error can also be caused by incorrectly set time and date on the device. Do the following:

  1. Open your device settings and go to the “Date and Time” menu.
  2. Check the box next to “Disable automatic synchronization.”

If you cannot download an update, for example, for the Equalizer application, or the Windows Store itself refuses to start on your device, the issue may be due to your account settings being messed up. Sometimes, to fix this problem, it is enough to re-enter the device password in the “Accounts” section in the phone settings. Try the other methods listed earlier as well, as any of them may help you solve the problem.

If the application installation fails, check your account settings
