Sometimes when processing photos you need to use so-called presets. Especially if we are talking about a large number of photographs. Therefore, let’s look at the issues of installing and configuring presets in Lightroom.

Preset is a set of specific commands used at the user’s request. You can compare it (very conditionally) with a template. Although, the meaning of the word is a combination of the English words pre (preliminary) and set (setting). The essence of a preset: a combination of effects and image settings that are set automatically.

Installation

There are two ways to install presets in Lightroom. Both are quite simple, but it's better to use the simplified one:

Now the selected sets of settings will always be available in the program until the user deletes them. At the same time, they are stored in the location that was chosen.

Creation

This may seem like a complicated process, but in reality you only need to do a series of editing steps on a single photo. It is convenient to create new presets for large volumes of processing. You can create a preset in Ligtroom like this:

This step is useful when editing a large number of photos. Or if there are plans for further work with similar parameters.

Storing presets along with the program

The second way to work with preset combinations is to storage in the program folder. In this case, you will not need to manually select them through import. To set this storage you need to change the Lightroom settings:

Now all preliminary image settings will be stored together with the program folder. This will allow you to call them from the program a little faster and protect against accidental deletion.

Removing unnecessary Presets

When there is no longer a need for something, it can be removed. Presets are no exception. You can delete them individually or in groups. When deleting separately, just select Preset in the appropriate window and selecting with the right mouse button, click “ Delete».

To remove more than one piece at a time, you will need to repeat steps 1 and 2 from the previous paragraph. Instead of checking the option, you need to click “ Show Lightroom Presets Folder", which will allow you to find out where the presets are located. In the Explorer window that opens, you can delete items as convenient. You will need to restart Lightroom for the deletions to take effect.

Lightroom Presets

A preset can be characterized as a set of specific actions related to processing, by activating which you can significantly transform photos.

In simpler terms, let’s say you have a photo and you haven’t performed any actions with it yet, load it into the Lightroom editor, select the preset you need, click on it and your photo is transformed.

For example, the following settings are specified in the preset (The color of the sky is more saturated, sharper and darker, darkening at the edges, the green color is more saturated) Look at the photo below, using the slider you can change the photo. Initially, Lightroom already comes with free presets, but they don’t always meet your needs, and you want something more interesting.

I want to say right away that there are no universal presets. It all depends on the photo shooting conditions, exposure, light, shadows, etc.

How to install presets

This article will answer the question of how to download presets. First, you need to download ready-made presets. After that, open Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, import the photo and go to the Corrections tab.

In the left window, in Preset parameters, right-click on " User Presets“, then click Import.

In the file selection window, find the downloaded preset and click Open. Now in this folder, the file should be displayed. When you click on it, the photo will change, depending on what settings are included in it.

How to save a preset

To create your own preset, you need to go to the “ Preset options» press +, create a new preset.

A window will appear in which you need to set a name and make the necessary settings, then click Create.

The created preset will appear in the list.

After that, click on it and start processing the photo, when finished, right-click on the created preset again and select “ Update current settings". To save a preset to your computer, right-click on it, select Export, and select the folder where you want to save it.

A preset is a file with a set of settings. That is, you can copy the specified parameters from it and apply it to process your photo. The file can contain all standard settings: white balance, brightness, shadows, exposure and any others.

Thanks to the preset, you won't have to waste time on processing every time: you'll just use ready-made settings.

Where to get the preset:

• You can create your own file if you understand processing.

• The easier way is to buy or download for free on the Internet. The distribution of presets is carried out by photographers themselves. You need to look for presets that suit your processing style.

Where to download presets

For example, you can enter the request “Download presets for Lightroom” into the search bar of your browser (they are suitable for both the mobile and desktop versions of the program) and view the sites that appear. Among them there are VKontakte groups dedicated to relevant collections. There, presets can be downloaded as one photo or as an archive of several. The archive needs to be unpacked.

Or you can search on Instagram using the hashtag #presetsforfree. There you can also find posts simply describing the settings - you will have to copy them manually (not “copy-paste” into Lightroom, but “fill out” each section yourself).

Often, sets of presets are given out for free by bloggers who are involved in mobile photography. There are also entire store accounts where sets cost 100–200 rubles. In this case, the files are sent to you by email in the form of archives, which also need to be unpacked.

How to use presets

Once you understand how to use presets (and it's very simple!), editing your photos will take just a minute.

Step 1. Download the Lightroom mobile app from the Play Store.

Step 2. Download presets that suit your processing style.

I download presets in the form of photos. They open in the Lightroom application like a regular photo. For example, I liked this preset:

Step 3: In the Lightroom app, select and open the preset file.

Step 4. Now you need to copy the specified parameters from this photo. Click the three dots in the top right corner. There is a tab “Copy settings”:

Step 5: Now open your photo that you want to process. Click the three dots again and select "Paste Settings". The preset settings are automatically transferred to your photo.

To make your Instagram feed look organic and pleasant, many bloggers and business accounts resort to designing their publications in the same style. Everyone does this in their own way: some stick to certain colors in the photo, excluding unnecessary ones, some use the same sets of filters for all photos, and some use lightroom presets. I’ll talk about the latter in this post.

What are presets and how to use them?

Have you noticed that on some Instagram accounts, photos look beautiful not only individually, but also as a whole, they harmoniously form the feed, giving it a unified style. This effect can be achieved if you adhere to certain standards when shooting and processing photos. This:

• Shooting in one light. For example, only in daylight outside, in daylight indoors, or in different types of lighting sources.
• Control of the color scheme in the photo. You need to determine the dominant colors that should fill the majority of the photo.
• Processing photos with the same filters. You can increase or decrease the degree of overlay, but use strictly the same filters.
• Using presets. The same visual concept can be achieved using one preset for photo processing.

To achieve ideal results, they usually adhere to several standards at once. For example, using presets involves not only applying the preset itself, but also taking photographs that will fit with this preset. In this post I will tell you how to take such photos, what are presets and how to use them.

What is a preset on Instagram?

The concept of a preset on Instagram comes from the Lightroom program. Its essence is to create, save and use the same photo processing settings for all pictures. A preset is created for one photo, and then simply copied to the next. That is, you don’t have to re-process the photos every time.

Presets have become widespread on Instagram thanks to the advent of the Lightroom application, with which you can also create and use presets. That is, now, in order to process your photo with a preset, you don’t have to run to the computer, but you can do it from your gadget.

Many people have the mistaken opinion that using a preset, you can design all photos in the same style. Actually this is not true. Very often, a preset is beautifully applied to some photos, but not so much to others. And sometimes you have to edit the preset settings a little to achieve the desired result. That is, a preset is not a pill that can open your account for you.

How to create a preset in lightroom?

Presets are created for certain types of photographs, with similar parameters and colors. For example, if you take photographs on the streets of a metropolis, where there are always large gray buildings, asphalt roads and sidewalks, clear marking lines and walls, then one preset may be suitable for you. But when you apply it to your outdoor photo, you may end up with something completely different from what you expected. Therefore, when creating a preset, first of all you need to decide on the photos that you are going to post on your Instagram account. Yes, this slightly limits the ability to take different pictures, but otherwise, you simply cannot create a feed designed in the same style.

To create a preset, you just need to process one photo in Lightroom. This photo will be the carrier of the preset. All settings from this photo can be copied and pasted into other photos, thereby applying the same processing to them.

Having decided on the “reference” photo that you will use as a sample with the preset, you can begin creating the preset itself. To do this you will need the Lightroom app. I wrote about how to create a minimal preset in the Lightroom application in the article - “”.

How to use presets?

To apply a created or purchased preset to a new photo, you need to open a processed sample photo with the preset and simply copy its processing settings. Next, you open the photo you want to process in Lightroom and paste the copied settings into it. Obviously, processing on a new photo may have its own shortcomings, which you can eliminate by slightly editing the inserted settings. Using a preset does not always lead to the desired result. Sometimes you have to slightly adjust the settings for a new photo, and sometimes the preset doesn’t work at all. Here are some tips to help you take photos so that they can be overlaid with your preset.

• Take photos in one light (preferably daylight).
• Keep an eye on the colors in the photo. The color gamut of the processed photo should match as closely as possible the color gamut of the sample photo for which the preset was created.
• Follow the contents of the photo. Often, presets that look great in photos with clear edges and lines look bad in photos with blurry, shapeless objects.
• Apply the preset only to high-quality photographs. On low-quality photos, presets may not work at all.
