Frankly speaking, I am skeptical about the selection of the best design templates. The authors of such lists almost never indicate the criteria by which topics are selected. Because of this, the collections should be called something like: “List of topics that the author likes best” or even “Templates that came to my attention first.”

Selecting the best design templates based on objective criteria is almost impossible. The problem is that there are no universal criteria for choosing a theme, even for sites of the same type.

There is no point in judging visual appeal since everyone has different tastes. Making lists of the best themes based on technical characteristics is also useless. All design templates from the official WordPress directory meet community requirements. And it will also not be possible to compare topics according to individual parameters.

Selecting themes based on functionality is also a futile exercise. Even different projects of the same type require different features. In addition, by and large all templates have the same functionality.

Popularity or the number of installations can hardly be called a valid or even completely objective sign of a good template.

The first four places in the list of the most popular are occupied by the default templates of the Twentieth family: Twenty Seventeen, Twenty Sixteen, Twenty Fifteen and Twenty Fourteen. These are great themes, but they owe at least part of their popularity to the fact that they are installed by default on new sites.

This collection contains only free templates, since WordPress is a non-profit project. If you are interested in commercial themes, you can find them on the recommended developers' sites. If the developer is not community approved and the theme is not listed in the official directory, there is no guarantee that the template meets technical and security standards.
