General characteristics

Type

Deciding on the type of device (phone or smartphone?) is quite simple. If you need a simple and inexpensive device for calls and SMS, it is recommended to choose a telephone. A smartphone is more expensive, but it offers a wide variety of options: games, videos, the Internet, thousands of programs for all occasions. However, its battery life is significantly less than that of a regular phone.

: If Android smartphones from Samsung enter the market every month, this or that model is regularly updated, and simply new devices appear, then with Windows solutions the situation is much more modest.

Such models are presented in small volumes; until recently, Samsung had only one device on our market in the form of the Samsung Omnia W. Now it has “reinforcements” in the form of another Omnia - it has the M index. The new product turned out to be quite simple: it has a lower frequency processor, less RAM and some of its own. But it has a larger screen, which for some may be a key factor when choosing a smartphone.

Appearance

As with the Omnia W, the device cannot be called a design masterpiece. It looks simple, which, however, can be called a conservative approach. Nothing bright or remarkable, but just right for an office environment.

The assembly of the Korean smartphone is on par, excellent workmanship, as usual. There is no need to choose the color of the case; only one universal gray color option is offered.

The dimensions of the phone case are 121.7 x 64.1 x 10.5 mm, weight 119 g. It turns out to be a medium-sized brick-block, which is neither overweight nor uncomfortable in size.

The smartphone is entirely made of gray plastic. It is made of a large removable back panel and a border that runs along the screen. Moreover, it is slightly raised, so that it will serve as additional protection when the device lies on the surface with the display down.

On the front are the earpiece, proximity and light sensors. There is also a front camera.

At the bottom there are three touch buttons. The arrow takes you back one step, and holding this key opens the menu of running tasks. The central button takes you to the home screen from any application. Another button brings up the search menu. The keys have a white backlight that activates when pressed.

At the top end there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

On the left is a very convenient volume control key.

On the right side there is a raised key for locking the screen, as well as a dedicated two-position button for shooting.

There is a universal microUSB port at the bottom. A charger or cable is connected to it.

The back panel has slightly beveled edges, making it look like a cut block. The surface is designed simply. At the top is the 5-megapixel camera lens, positioned precisely in the center. Just below it is a diode flash. To the left is a ringer speaker under a pair of slots.

Inside there is a battery and a SIM card slot located on the side.

Screen

The smartphone has a Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 480x800 pixels and a diagonal of 4 inches, displaying 16 million colors.

The smartphone is equipped with an accelerometer, a proximity sensor and a brightness sensor. The screen is excellent: with bright and vibrant colors, excellent viewing angles. If desired, you can activate an option in the menu that will automatically dim the brightness when a white picture is displayed to save energy.

The screen is of the old type, with PenTile, which will remind you of . In terms of image quality, the new product is similar to the company's flagship of previous years. Those with acute vision will most likely be disappointed, but everyone else will not experience any inconvenience.

The screen behaves normally in the sun; the picture fades but remains readable.

The sensitivity of the capacitive display is good, and the diagonal is quite large for its class. If you look at the images carefully, you can see that the white color fades into pink shades.

Platform

The Samsung Omnia M S7530 has a Qualcomm MSM8255 processor with a frequency of 1 GHz. The smartphone has 384 MB of RAM and 4 GB of internal memory. Of this, a little more than 3 GB is available for storing user data. It is impossible to add space for content; the memory is not replaceable. There are no differences in operation from WP7 devices, the smartphone is fast.

Interface

The lock screen can be called the most striking element of the phone shell. A background image from the device’s memory is assigned here; it can be not only an image offered by the manufacturer, but also any other one uploaded to the device by the user or taken using the camera. To activate the screen you need to press the lock key. After touching, the display will light up for a short period of time. You can see time and date information on the screen. At the bottom of the event line, icons of new messages or calls will be displayed if they were left unattended by the user. This also includes data about future events recorded in the calendar. The number of events of each type will be indicated.

At the top, information about network connections is displayed. If the player is working, then from here you can control the operation of the widget responsible for the process of playing music. This element will also help you change the sound profile mode. To get to the phone menu, you need to swipe up from the bottom of the lock picture. For those who want to protect the contents of their smartphone from prying eyes, a password request function is provided.

The decoration of the main screen is simple and even ascetic. Nowadays, the majority of smartphones offer a variety of widgets and all sorts of functions in order to make the most of your desktop space. The WP7 developers abandoned this idea. Instead, a new and unusual way of organizing the menu is proposed. The status bar at the top combines information about wireless connections and time. Data about new events does not appear here. In this case, most often this period disappears, the battery charge level is not visible. You must touch the top of the screen to bring up this menu.

Most of the space is occupied by large squares, which are responsible for access to certain sections. These are application shortcuts, the menu itself is located on the next tab. Getting into it is simple, just follow the directions of a single arrow, under which a gaping black hole opens. By swiping your finger from right to left, you can get to the main menu. Here, in alphabetical order, all the programs that are installed on the phone are listed. This includes both standard applications and those subsequently added by the device owner.

From here, any icon can be sent to the desktop. There they change places and are placed in the right order. You may notice that some elements occupy not one area, but two. These are large shortcuts that add some variety. Moreover, some of them are equipped with animation. For example, the gallery icon will show something like a slide presentation. Real-time weather indication is displayed. As information about new events becomes available, corresponding icons appear on the icons. This is the number of new SMS, emails or missed calls. The list of shortcuts scrolls up and down, it doesn’t move any other way. The same principle applies to the main menu. To make it easier to manage a large number of programs in the future, there is a search function that will save you from tedious scrolling through a long string of icons.

If you want to change the design, you can choose from a black or white background, as well as eleven design themes. “Theme” is a strong word, they do not transform the interface, they only change the color of the icons and some of the menu items.

The platform offers multitasking. You need to hold the return button, after which a menu of windows will open, among which running applications will be displayed. There you can switch between them. However, this only applies to built-in applications. Programs from third-party developers do not work so smoothly; the user is faced with a lack of real multitasking. Today this is one of the main problems of the new platform.

Contacts

The list of names is organized according to the following principle. The phone book is divided into three sections. The first one shows all the names that are in the device's memory. The second one displays those that were used most often, these are the most popular contacts. The last column will connect together news from social networks. For example, Twitter or Facebook.

Contacts are displayed in a list that allows you to see the image assigned to the subscriber. The full first and last name cannot fit on one line. Personally, I don't like this option. Considering that there is a lot of free space left on the screen, such an implementation of a functional element looks controversial. Above the list of names, about a quarter of the screen is taken up by a large section header. A small area on the side is occupied by the adjacent column. The phone book is divided into small groups, with a letter highlighted in bright color above each of them.

In the settings, you select the type of sorting of names and the option for displaying them. There are book filter settings. From here you can remove data from social networks if they interfere. By holding your finger on the line with the subscriber's name, this contact can be moved to the desktop, deleted or edited.

When a new user is created, various data are assigned to him. Before this, you need to choose where the information will be saved: to your Windows Live account or another profile.

The new user receives a first name, last name, patronymic, place of work, nickname, title, picture. He is assigned several telephone numbers of different types: mobile, home, work, organization, pager, fax. At the same time, according to the creators of the platform, a person can only have one mobile phone. The issue is resolved by creating several contacts and merging them into one. But two home or work numbers. Three types of email are specified. Additional fields are assigned to the contact. This is an address, website, birthday, note, anniversary, loved one, children, office location, position. You can set not only one of the files in the phone’s memory as a ringtone, but also any other one. The search menu will help you find the right person. The phone allows you to create user groups. They will be highlighted separately in front of the general list of names. By adding users to each group, you can follow the lives of your friends, see their messages and pictures. Of course, you can write an email, SMS or call them from here.

Calls

To go to the dialing menu, you need to click on the icon. After this, a list of numbers opens. The telephone part is divided into four groups. This is the call log itself, dialing, phone book and search. The device cannot remember the partition that was last used. Thus, to dial a number you will always need to perform an extra action associated with moving from the call list to the virtual keyboard.

During the dialogue, information about the duration of the conversation is displayed on the screen, and before that a picture will be displayed if it has been assigned to the contact. The virtual keyboard displays Latin characters, but they will not help when dialing a number. There is no function for automatically selecting suitable numbers. The only assistant in this matter is the search option.

The call list is organized very simply. Here, in a long string of numbers, is the entire call history. It doesn't matter whether the numbers were the same or not. The phone cannot combine calls of the same type. The caller's name or number will be displayed if the data has not been saved in the phone memory. In order to highlight the type of call (incoming or outgoing), multi-colored backlighting is used, which highlights the information under the number. By selecting a number from the list, you can see the history of the call when you dialed someone. The number is saved from the log to the phone book either for an existing user, or a new one is created.

Messages

Correspondence is formed in two sections. The first consists of correspondence in the form of SMS and MMS. The other consists of Facebook contacts. Thus, you can correspond with users of the virtual community. Messages are displayed in a column. The sender's name or number is indicated here in large font. The text of the latest message is displayed in small letters at the bottom. The day on which the message was received is indicated on the right. If you hold your finger on a line, a menu will open, which will delete the entire dialogue. If desired, single SMS messages are deleted in the correspondence between users. Any message from the dialogue can be forwarded. For clarity, the text of unread messages is highlighted in bright color, based on the design theme.

Messages appear in the correspondence window, which are divided into blocks. At the same time, incoming and sent SMS differ from each other in shades, which makes it easier to read. In addition, the date and time the message was received is noted here. The number or name of the person with whom you are communicating is displayed above the message. By clicking on this line, a menu opens that will allow you to make a call or see more detailed information about the subscriber.

When typing a message, you need to select the sender. You can simply type the numbers on the line at the top of the screen or select an existing contact. Previously used numbers cannot be used. The text entry field itself is located below, as new words are added, this space expands. When the number of characters becomes more than sixty, the number of characters will be displayed below. This will help take into account the volume of a new SMS; sending combined, large messages is supported. A text message automatically turns into a multimedia message if you add a picture to it. In this case, only a snapshot from the camera or an image from the gallery is inserted. It will not be possible to convey any other information.

The settings in this section allow you to disable Facebook chat and activate a delivery report, which will be sent as a separate message. It’s inconvenient that the phone can’t save drafts in memory. The lack of templates is less critical, but this fact is worth mentioning.

Email

The device offers a wizard to set up a mailbox: Windows Live, Outlook, Yahoo Mail or Google. You will have to configure other services manually; Yandex or Mail.ru are not provided for automatic settings here.

Each account is assigned a name, and the mailbox check interval is configured: push mode, every 15, 30 or 60 minutes. You can also check your email manually. The time period for loading correspondence is set: 3, 7, 14 or 30 days or all the time. However, you cannot set a limit on downloading emails. The signature text that will be displayed on the sent letter is included. The mailbox offers several category headings: all, unread, due, important. The interface resembles a message menu. The sender's name is highlighted in large font, with the contents of the letter below in neat text. To the right is the time or date of receipt. New letters are highlighted in bright colors.

By holding your finger on a line with a message, you can delete it, mark it as read, move it to another folder, or assign a mark. Incoming emails with attachments will display a paperclip icon to help you understand that something has been added to the message. There is enough space on the screen for information about five letters. Below you can see four icons. The first allows you to create a new letter, the second is responsible for selecting several objects, the other allows you to check your mail. The latter opens a search menu within the correspondence archive.

When you open a received letter, you can see information about the sender, time and date of receipt, as well as content. Using multi-touch, you can easily scale text to a convenient size. However, text cannot adapt to the boundaries of the screen. The type of attachments is shown, the device allows you to download and view “office” type files, but you cannot see where the document was downloaded. For clarity, undownloaded attachments are displayed as a paperclip icon. Those that have already downloaded receive a different icon that corresponds to their usual symbol on the computer - the Word file icon is known to any user.

Entering text

You can choose from portrait or landscape mode. In both cases, about half of the screen is allocated for the keyboard. A separate key is available to change the input language. Another special button stores a variety of emoticons in memory. They are in the form of symbols, rather than the usual emoticons, which will require some knowledge in order to select the right type when sending. Added sound when typing; it can be turned off. Select the desired language layouts from the menu. By holding your finger on a letter key, you can see a menu with additional symbols. For example, in the Russian keyboard, Ъ is called through ь, and Ъ through E.

Implemented copying and pasting text. A cursor works on a similar principle, helping to correct typos. The built-in auto-word substitution works very well, it has a wide vocabulary, I liked it. Input speed depends on the user's skills. If you get used to the layout, you can type text quite quickly.

Calendar

The device offers a choice of several ways to display information. This is a day scheduled by the hour, a list of planned events, or tasks displayed in a separate column. In addition, all data is displayed in the form of a regular monthly plan. In this case, you will notice that in some squares something will be written. However, you can only see scheduled events if you go to the section with this data, click on the date and open a new menu. And this despite the fact that there is a lot of free space “walking” below, it could be used more wisely. The device allows you to simultaneously use several calendars, each of them is highlighted in a different color. In the settings you can change it by selecting one of the possible options.

When creating a new event, several fields are filled in. They can be: topic, place, selected calendar, time, duration. Additionally, a reminder is set that is triggered at the start of the event, 5, 10, 15, 30, 60 minutes, 18 hours, one day, one week in advance. A daily repeat is turned on, on every weekday, on every day of the week that coincides with the day the event was created, on every date that coincides with the date the event was created. Participants of the event are added and will receive notifications about it by email. Notes are also created for the new entry.

Browser

HTML5 support borders on the lack of Adobe Flash. However, you can see animated advertisements on various resources, and videos are played on YouTube. The browser allows you to keep up to six windows open at the same time. The loading speed of resources is high, and the operation of the application itself is also pleasing. It is fast, scrolling through even large sites occurs without delay. Unfortunately, the browser does not know how to adapt a scaled font to the screen borders. You have to move around the page to see the hidden text.

The address bar is located at the bottom, right under your fingers, which is very convenient. There is an icon for reloading the page on the left, and an additional menu opens on the right. This includes your browsing history and bookmarks. The necessary resources can be added directly to the desktop. In the application settings, you can disable saving cookies and select a viewing mode. This item allows you to activate the mobile or full version. The application works in landscape or portrait mode, the set of capabilities is the same. You can search for the required words on the page.

Music

The phone supports .m4a, m4b, .mp3, .wma formats. The section with music and video is combined into a common group. This also includes podcasts and radio. Another tab shows history. Here you can look at songs that you have listened to before or at films. The last list will show the new data that has been added to the phone. In each of the categories, except the first, file covers are shown, it all looks very nice.

The Music section will offer a list of files, which are ordered by name depending on the selected criterion. The following options are offered: artists, albums, compositions, playlists, genres. If you click on one of the letters, you can use the quick search function among the data.

When a song is played, the file's cover art appears on the screen. At the top there are three standard player control keys. Below is information about the artist, album and track title. Under the song name, the names of the next two songs are indicated in small print. There is also information about the playing time and total duration of the song. However, there is no rewind function using the scroll bar, it does not work. To do this, you will need to hold down the Forward or Backward key to move to the desired area.

The repeat mode is turned on for all songs or just one. There is a mixed playback mode. You can also mark your favorite composition separately. If you click on the volume control button, a small menu will open, which will display information about the track and buttons for moving between songs. It is also available when the screen is locked, which is convenient.

The sound quality is good, however, the volume headroom is small, as is the case in other Samsung phones. We can also note the absence of an equalizer, but it’s still pleasant to listen to music without it.

Radio

The receiver is ascetic; only a line is displayed here where a scale with numbers is displayed. Not only manual search works, but also automatic search. The desired stations are stored in the device memory. Some data is missing here, for example, RDS information is not displayed. The design is very simple: white numbers on a black background and nothing else.

Video

The player is extremely simple and ascetic. A list of files in the phone's memory is displayed here; by selecting the one you need, it will open in full screen, although black bars at the top and bottom are possible. The screen displays the duration of the video and the time since the start of its playback. There are three player control keys, as well as a scroll bar that helps you quickly move through the movie. Declared formats: 3gp, .3g2, .mp4, .m4v, .mbr, .wmv. The smartphone does not support DivX or XviD. However, when you copy a movie to your device via Zune, the app will automatically convert the file to the desired format. Of course it will take time.

Camera

The smartphone has a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash. Shooting is launched not only from the menu, but also using a dedicated button on the side. You need to press it and hold your finger for five seconds, after which you can take a photo. The button is two-position, comfortable. An excellent opportunity is to start shooting in locked mode, this allows you not to waste extra time, but to immediately start taking photographs.

The screen acts as a viewfinder. On the right is a button for switching between photo and video shooting modes. Below is the digital zoom key. The last button is responsible for the settings menu. On the left you can see a small part of the previously taken frame. From here you can go directly to the gallery if you click on this picture.

Examples of pictures of good quality, if we take into account the capabilities of the 5-megapixel module. But for the same money you can find devices that offer more interesting shooting capabilities.

Omnia M was announced in May 2012. Thus, Samsung continued to produce smartphones that run on the Windows Phone OS. Omnia M belongs to the class of budget smartphones and has good tactical and technical characteristics.

Samsung i8350 Omnia M is made in the form of a regular plastic gray candy bar with a metal edging.

The build quality of the device is very good, like almost all gadgets from the South Korean manufacturer. The device fits very comfortably in the hand, both during a conversation and during other actions with the handset. The dimensions of the smartphone are 121.6x64.1x10.5 mm, and the weight is 119 g.

Performance and Software

Samsung Omnia M is based on a single-core processor with a clock frequency of 1 GHz, has 384 MB of RAM and 4 or 8 GB of internal memory, depending on the modification. These characteristics do not look cutting-edge, so application failures may occur. At the same time, there is no slot for microSD memory cards, which makes it impossible to expand the already small flash memory.

The smartphone runs on the Windows Phone 7.5 operating system. Navigation in the OS is quite intuitive, thanks to the Metro interface. The firmware also uses additional functions: for example, Local Scout to determine the user’s location and the necessary services in an unfamiliar area.

The smartphone supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, GPS and 3G networks.

Screen

The Samsung i8350 uses a 4-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 800x480 pixels. For a mid-price smartphone, the screen is very good - crisp, clear, well suited for watching videos.

But at the same time, it is worth noting that fading in the sun is significant.

Camera

The Samsung i8350 Omnia M smartphone uses a 5-megapixel rear camera, which allows you to take pictures with a maximum resolution of 2592x1944 pixels, with an LED flash and autofocus function. Although the smartphone does not belong to the expensive class, the camera allows you to take very high-quality pictures with good color rendition, although sometimes the image clarity fails.

Omnia M has several special photo applications: FunShot with distorting effects, Photo Studio for changing some characteristics of photos and adding frames to them.

The camera also allows video recording with a resolution of 720px and a frequency of 30 frames per second.

The smartphone has a VGA camera for video communication.

Battery

The gadget is equipped with a Li-Ion battery with a capacity of 1500 mAh, which, according to the manufacturer, will allow battery life up to 12 hours of talk time on a 2G network and up to 8 hours on a 3G network, as well as up to 530 hours of standby time on a 2G and up to 420 hours – on a 3G network. With not very intensive use, the battery will last for a whole day. One feature was also noticed: with a white background, consumption increases by 15-20%.

Price

The cost of the Samsung i8350 Omnia M will be approximately 11,000 rubles, so you can safely classify the smartphone as mid-priced. At the same time, despite the outstanding technical characteristics, the gadget works very well thanks to the low hardware requirements of the operating system.

Samsung Omnia M video review:

What I didn't like

Reboots when the operator's signal is poor or simply when he wants. It happens that it becomes dull and the interlocutor’s voice breaks and disappears.

What I liked

Price, design, convenient system, thoughtful and simple menu.

What I didn't like

no headphones.

What I liked

Firstly, a nice design Secondly, high-quality assembly Thirdly, a pleasant interface Fourthly, a good camera for its price category.

What I didn't like

You can’t put a picture on your desktop((also (for me personally) it was a bit of a money hog, I had to run around putting 100 rubles almost every day.. but this may not be the case for everyone, also this money problem can be solved by reinstalling from OS 7.5 to 7.8(in phone updates), you can also download music, pictures, etc. only through the phone (you need to download the program on your computer, and it will work out. Gamers, I’ll disappoint you, not with games like subway surf, temple run. and fruit ninga, angry birds and doodle jump with minecraft cost more than 100 rubles, and the payment, bastard, is only with a master card or something like that, the camera is crap: at the slightest movement it blurs, and the photo is useless, there are a lot of stupid and unnecessary applications, and on the Internet on it. you can’t sit, it constantly breaks down, and also if you don’t turn off the Wi-Fi at night))), in the morning the money all goes from the account into the abyss of the business. plus, a factor that really infuriates me is that for this phone you will find a case and a sticker on the screen (the size is large, non-standard, and also this phone is “not fashionable”, and therefore I wish you good luck in your search for accessories. and ANOTHER BIG MINUS - there are no headphones in the package , stsuka. And by the way, it doesn’t have BLUETOoth (BLUETOOTH), or rather it does, but it doesn’t connect even with the same “Windows” phones. If you want to download a paid game, you need to click on the “demo” button, which will eat up a lot of money.

What I liked

user-friendly interface, excellent menu layout, thin, not heavy. If you manage to reinstall 7.5 to 7.8, then you can change the size of the “squares”, and it’s not that expensive. good touchpad, detects touches 0.5 mm from the screen, cool.

What I didn't like

All the rest

What I liked

What I didn't like

No flash card input. They write that it's 4GB, but in reality it's about 2GB. You can't set your own ringtones. To download from a PC to a phone, you need a program, there are also quite a few worries with it. There is no decent Skype. With active use, the charge lasts for a maximum of 8 hours.

What I liked

camera, design, price.

What I didn't like

the processor is weak, there is not enough RAM, windows phone 7.5 is a meaningless operating system, and besides, it is not updated, so the phone is to be thrown away, there is no way to add more memory

What I liked

The screen is good: still super Amoled, big battery

What I didn't like

WP system with many limitations (difficulty of jailbreaking, connecting to a PC only through programs, not all formats are accepted, you cannot transfer photos and music via bluetooth, difficulty setting your own ringtone, etc.)
- There is very little RAM, from time to time when the phone is heavily loaded, a 4-second “memory recovery” occurs
- No flash drive slot
- The battery is mediocre, lasts for 4-5 hours of 3G surfing at maximum brightness

What I liked

Gorgeous sAMOLED display with an optimal diagonal of 4 inches and a decent resolution of 480x800 - Sensitive and accurate sensor - Loud speaker - Decent 5 MP camera - WP system, initially beautiful and protected from crooked hands - Shock-resistant, fell many times and survived

What I didn't like

Low memory, impossible to set your own music for the call.

What I liked

Very good display, excellent quality photos and videos

What I didn't like

1. The camera is also one of its shortcomings. It constantly blurs. When you get closer, it spoils the image.
2. To download from a PC to a phone, you need a program.
3. Neither photos nor videos are downloaded from the phone to the PC.
4. Touch buttons are pressed accidentally.
5.Constantly disconnects from the wi-fi network by itself.
6.No notes.
7. At 100% charge, when actively using the Internet, it runs out in 6.5-7.5 hours.
8. Few permissions.
9.Memory instead of 4 GB, only 1 GB.

What I liked

1.Bright display. 2.Camera. 3. Video camera.

What I didn't like

No bluetooth (for receiving/transmitting files), no current headset. The camera does not have autofocus. Ringtones can be set to a duration of no more than 30 seconds and you need to try very hard to add your own melody to it if it is not available in additional applications (free) on the market. One SIM card (at least for me this is a big minus).

What I liked

A sturdy device with a good clear and bright display, it has fallen and gotten wet many times and still works. The display is slightly susceptible to scratches, although the showroom said that it does not have any additional protection. The Internet works quickly and is good at downloading videos from it. Programs in Push mode work perfectly, notifications arrive quickly. GPS works fine too. There are many free useful applications in the market. The program for synchronizing the device with the Zune computer does not require any special skills and is quite easy to install. The camera is certainly worse than Lumiya’s, but it also takes pictures of excellent quality. The Windows interface is very convenient, I quickly got used to it after Android.

What I didn't like

Raw system 100%

What I liked

Good screen, no pixels visible. Pleasant to the touch. No brakes.
