Which laptop manufacturers are more reliable? Choosing a laptop: what the manufacturer doesn’t tell you

Before buying a laptop, you should decide what tasks it should cope with; its power, capabilities, and most importantly, price depend on this. If you need a laptop for a child, then you can buy an inexpensive model that can handle simple tasks, surfing the Internet, typing documents and creating presentations. If you are looking for a device for work, then you should take a closer look at models from the mid-price category; they are more powerful and can handle serious programs. In the case when you need a laptop for gaming, you should prepare for serious financial expenses; gaming laptops are expensive because of their powerful hardware. We have compiled rating of the best laptops 2018 - 2017 in the category of inexpensive budget models, middle and premium class. Our top is based on reviews from specialists, consumers and the price-quality ratio.

Manufacturer selection

It is worth noting that when choosing good inexpensive laptop , it is worth paying special attention to the manufacturer’s brand. Unknown companies can release the most affordable models to the market, but their reliability and build quality are questionable. We advise you to pay attention to models from reputable manufacturers, for example: Lenovo, HP, Dell, Acer, Asus, Toshiba or Samsung. We did not include Apple laptops in this list, since the products of this company certainly cannot be called budget. Although some models of Apple laptops, in terms of technical characteristics, are not much different from competitors from the budget, inexpensive class.

After the Dell XPS 13 dominated this ranking for several years, the MateBook X Pro proves to be a truly worthy contender. It's a gorgeous laptop with a stunning screen (albeit an odd aspect ratio), and it comes with cutting-edge components that deliver brilliant performance, as well as battery life that puts most of the competition to shame. It is also competitively priced, giving you features, design and performance for less money. Unfortunately, it's not available everywhere, so if you can't find it in your local stores, check out the Dell XPS 13 as a worthy alternative.

  • Minuses: 256 GB – 1 TB SSD;

Even though the Dell XPS 13 has been bumped into second place by the brilliant MateBook X Pro, it's still the best. There's a good reason why it has remained at the top of our best laptops rankings for three years in a row. The Dell XPS 13 is a thinner, more powerful version of 2018's best laptop, and it now comes with a stunning new 4K screen and a stunning new color: Rose Gold, while Alpine White is on the way. The laptop is more expensive than the previous XPS 13, but the 2018 version features powerful 8th-generation Intel processors ranging from i5 to i7, along with an Infinity Edge display with no visible screen bezels, allowing you to fit a 13.3-inch screen into the 11 -inch frame, the Dell XPS 13 really stands out from the competition. Not only that, but the selection of ports is great. Compared to Apple's exclusive USB-C interface, Dell's flagship laptop impresses with options like USB 3.0 along with the elusive SD card slot. It's no surprise that the Dell XPS 13 is still the most popular laptop on the Windows market. But now he has become even better. You can also choose between ultra-high resolution or touchscreen display, and a wide choice of local and RAM memory. Or you can save money and go with more conservative specifications. Without a doubt, it will remain the best laptop in 2019.

If you're looking for the latest and greatest laptop from Apple, we suggest you take a look at the 13-inch MacBook Pro witch Touch Bar (2018). And while Microsoft boasted the Surface Book 2's performance over last year's MacBook Pro, Apple is offering major upgrades with the 13-inch MacBook Pro (2018), not to mention what the 15-inch model offers. The main feature of the model remains the Touch Bar - a thin OLED display at the top of the keyboard that can be used for a huge variety of things, whether it's automatic word substitution as you type or touch identification so you can log in using your fingerprint. This is certainly an Apple-style solution, but it leads to higher prices. This is an expensive laptop, so you may want to consider one of the Windows alternatives. If you're open to a Microsoft system, be sure to consider the XPS 13 and the excellent MateBook X Pro. But, if you are a die-hard Apple fan, the Pro 13 is definitely the best laptop for you!

If you want a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 but can only spend significantly less, the Acer Switch 3 (2017) is definitely a better option. It's designed around the same concept as the Surface Pro and is also less efficient thanks to downgraded specs, but for most tasks it's a brilliant little machine. Moreover, to sweeten the deal, the convertible laptop includes a keyboard, hence you won't have to incur any additional costs. As usual, it comes in several versions: USB Type-C, 8 GB of RAM, IPS display and the Intel Core i3-7100U processor is the more expensive option.

This year's iteration of the MacBook is another win for Apple, as the company has once again won us over with its great design, excellent performance, and best-in-class battery life. Apple has updated its 7th generation Kaby Lake series processors from Intel, meaning you get improved performance and better battery life without sacrificing the thin and light design that MacBooks are known for. While the 2017 MacBook isn't focused on pure performance like the more powerful and versatile MacBook Pro above, or a gaming laptop like the Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501, it's still one of the best laptops of 2017-2018. Right now, it's an extremely thin and light MacBook that you can take anywhere without even noticing its weight, making the laptop a great platform for macOS High Sierra.

Designed for users who want to get away from the complex nature of Windows PCs or MacBooks, Chromebooks have been gaining popularity and mass availability in recent years. Google Pixelbook is no exception. While it costs twice as much as a regular Chrome OS device and, as expected, doesn't come with a stylus included, the PixelBook is configured to be firmly in the future. It has a pair of USB-C ports for accessories and super-fast data transfer, a hinge that flips inside out for watching movies on airplanes, and perhaps best of all, Android app support. Sure, there are some complications, but you can access the entire Goolge Play range with a Pixelbook, from playing Sonic the Hedgehog to watching videos in VLC. And with a battery life of 7 hours and 40 minutes (according to our tests), you'll be able to do it for a while without recharging.

  • Minuses: Powerful for the price | Battery life;

: Boring design | Speakers on the bottom;

And while you might have been convinced that "budget ultrabook" was an oxymoron up to this point, Acer has brought this common misconception to life with the Swift 3. That's because the company has taken the all-aluminum chassis of the Acer Swift 7 and stuck some more affordable components inside. that everyone can enjoy. It doesn't work with macOS, but the Acer Swift 3 puts the old MacBook Air to shame, thanks in part to its excellent price tag. So while you shouldn't expect much more from the screen or quality built-in audio, the performance tests are ahead even for the money.

We also took a look at the upcoming release at CES 2018, which comes with improved graphics and overall performance. This laptop could take a serious position in our rankings when it launches at the end of 2018.

When choosing a laptop, knowledgeable people are interested not only in its hardware, but also in reliability. After all, you wouldn’t want your new laptop to be repaired over time. It is especially unpleasant when this happens after the warranty period has expired. What are the criteria for reliability and how is it determined in general? Which company makes the most reliable laptops? This is what we will discuss later in the article.

How is reliability determined?

I would really like to use cars as an analogy. For example, any automobile concern can produce the same car model for 7-8 years, and sometimes more. During this time, they collect statistics on breakdowns of a particular part or part of the machine. This allows you to quickly identify weaknesses and then take actions to eliminate or strengthen them. This is a very correct and logical approach, and ultimately it allows the buyer to know whether the car he is choosing is reliable or not.

This won’t work with laptops: each model takes a year or two to make, nothing more. This period is not enough to determine its reliability, so all laptops currently on sale can only be candidates for the right to be called the most reliable, but whether they will be reliable can be found out in 3-4 years. Of course, at that time these models will no longer be produced and will probably not be on sale. There will be new models, more powerful, because the requirements for modern programs and games are growing every year, therefore, manufacturers must have time to “rivet” laptops in order to satisfy the needs of customers.

ASUS Company

Everyone knows the ASUS brand as a manufacturer of computer equipment, in particular laptops. It is also famous for the fact that in 2010-2011 it became a reliability leader thanks to its model Asus K50IJ. This laptop sold in large numbers, and out of the 45 models observed, only 2 failed due to various reasons. Moreover, these reasons were exclusively of a user nature, and not technical (crushed matrix, chewed wire). Can these breakdowns be considered a shortcoming of the company? Hardly…

This means that Asus managed to achieve an amazing result - 0% of malfunctions out of the observed 45 devices.

Let's go further and look at 2013-2014. Then in 150 laptops Asus X55A Also, not a single malfunction was detected, but at the moment, out of a very large batch, one has failed. This is no more than 0.7% defective (it was repaired under warranty). This modification is now a little outdated, and has been replaced by models Asus X551CA And Asus X551MA. It is impossible to say yet whether they are reliable, but in 2-3 years this will become known for sure.

Which is the most reliable laptop to buy?

Alas, at the moment, if you want to buy a model that will last a long time and not break, then you should look for it in someone's hands. For example, the already mentioned Asus K50IJ And Asus X55A They are definitely reliable, but they are unlikely to be available in stores. And in general, they are already a little outdated and are not entirely suitable for performing many modern tasks.

Choosing the most reliable laptop from modern models is impossible. Everything modern and productive that is now on the market is only potential candidates, and as soon as they disappear from store shelves (which will happen in 2-3 years), then we can judge their reliability.

Owners of expensive laptops with high specifications believe that since they bought an expensive model, it will last forever and will never break. Alas, this is not entirely true. Expensive or cheap laptops - they are all assembled according to approximately the same scheme and are absolutely equal in terms of reliability. Therefore, owners of cool and powerful models are sometimes surprised that their gadget, for which they paid a decent amount of money, has broken down and believe that all owners of cheaper models from the same manufacturer also constantly take them to the service center. This is actually not the case, and the reliability of a model is influenced not so much by its cost as by its characteristics and assembly.

By the way, modern consumers do not always make choices consciously. Their choice is greatly influenced by the promotion of a particular product. For example, some people cannot objectively and logically explain why they choose an Apple laptop. They just say: “It’s Apple,” and that’s it. This is where the arguments end. Of course, this company really produces good equipment - no one argues with that, but the percentage of defects here is perhaps higher than that of Asus.

The other side of the coin is when people say: “I have a Lenovo laptop and so does my neighbor. Everything works well, which means this company is reliable.” Is this statistics? Of course not. Statistics are determined by thousands of copies around the world.

Which laptops are the most reliable?

To answer this question, it is necessary to obtain generalized data on the reliability indicators of different brands. This will be statistics of laptop breakdowns and frequent types of repairs in service centers, which will allow us to more or less accurately determine which manufacturers are the most reliable. Let us clarify once again: MANUFACTURERS, not MODELS.

Here's what happened (according to StatisticBrain):

  1. Asus brand – 15.6% of laptops fail;
  2. Toshiba – 15.7%;
  3. Sony – 16.8%;
  4. Apple – 17.4%;
  5. Dell – 18.3%;
  6. Lenovo – 21.5%;
  7. Acer – 23.3%;
  8. HP – 25.6%.

From these data it follows that the most reliable laptop is a model from Asus. In general, no matter how much you would like to purchase a guaranteed reliable device, it is unlikely that you will succeed. Of course, you can buy a laptop from Asus, Toshiba, Sony or Apple with a low probability of failure due to hardware reasons, but no one will give you guarantees. By the way, please note: the difference in the data of the first five manufacturers is only a couple of percent, which means that it is minimal.

And one more thing: according to the same StatisticBrain, the most common failure in laptops is the video chip. It simply overheats. Even the simplest models for surfing the Internet sometimes get very hot, not to mention gaming ones, which look like stoves. Of course, there is a cooling system, but when dust settles on the radiator, it can’t handle it either. As a result, the video chip overheats and the laptop stops working. So gaming models statistically break down more often than regular ones, which do not heat up as much. In this case, the solution to the problem is trivial and unpleasant: you should not buy universal models with average hardware and expensive gaming laptops. According to statistics, office laptops with weak processors and integrated video cards break down much less often.

But I also want to play. There are computers for gaming - they are more reliable and powerful than laptops. In computers, it is easier to implement a cooling system for components, because they have a large case in which, if possible, additional fans are installed to provide cooling. Maybe it's the narrow and very limited body of the laptop. It is not surprising that components often simply overheat.

Criteria for a reliable laptop

From all of the above, it is easy to draw up the main criteria by which you can choose a RELIABLE laptop:

  1. This should be a gaming model and not a universal one, but an office model;
  2. Lack of a discrete (separate) video card. It must be integrated in the processor core;
  3. Dual-core Intel Haswell or Ivy Bridge processor (statistically reliable and productive);
  4. Brand – any of the five above: Asus, Toshiba, Sony, Apple, Dell;
  5. Sturdy body (you simply need to pick it up and touch it. Nothing should creak/shake).

Any model that meets these criteria should theoretically be reliable. By the way, presented above Asus K50IJ And Asus X55A fall under them. I really didn’t want to upset fans of powerful gaming laptops, but these are the statistics, and when it comes specifically to reliability, you often have to sacrifice performance and cool hardware. So it’s up to you to choose: reliability or performance.
