Keyboard with Ukrainian layout. On-screen keyboard online

Being connoisseurs and admirers of Ukrainian culture and Ukrainian language, we have developed a Ukrainian typographic keyboard layout that allows you to enter additional characters, like the right quotation marks, em dashes, some simple fractions and other similar things. Our layout is based on the typographic layout of Ilya Birman and is completely similar to it (with the exception of Ukrainian characters). Ukrainian typographic layout for Windows is available in two versions:

  1. Main option. The letter “Ґ” is located where “Ё” is in the Russian layout, and the apostrophe is entered as + [Є].
  2. Alternative option. The letter “Ґ” is entered as + [Г], and the apostrophe is located where the letter “Ё” is located in the Russian layout.

The layout works on Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7 (32- and 64-bit versions).

Installation instructions:

  1. Download the layout (main or alternative; ZIP, 250 KB).
  2. Unpack the archive.
  3. In the folder that appears, run the setup.exe file.
  4. Click right click mouse on the current input language indicator in the taskbar and select “Options...”
  5. In the list, replace your layout for the Ukrainian language with a layout with the complex name “Ukrainian (typographic layout of Ilya Birman)”.

To remove a layout, find it in Add or Remove Programs (in Windows Vista and more later versions In Windows, this Control Panel applet is called Programs and Features).

Questions and answers

  • Question: I installed your layout and it crashed Windows registry(broken HDD, my beloved dog died, etc.), who will compensate for my losses?
Answer: Nobody. Editorial gg is not responsible for the negative consequences of using the Ukrainian typographic layout.
  • Question: Is it possible to simultaneously install the main and Alternative option layouts?
    Answer: It's possible, but why?
  • Question: Will there be a version of the Ukrainian typographic layout for Mac OS X?
Answer: Maybe. Basically, standard layouts in Mac OS X allow you to enter everything you need into Everyday life typographic characters, but the characters are arranged differently than in the Windows typographic layout. If you desperately need a Ukrainian analogue of Ilya Birman’s layout for Mac OS X, write to e-mail Pavel Urusov (pavel.. See below.

Ukrainian typographic layout for Mac OS X (fresh!)

At the request of the public, we made a Ukrainian typographic layout for Mac OS X (ZIP, 7 KB). The layout has the same capabilities as the Mac version of Ilya Birman's Russian typographic layout. Especially for her, we drew a pixel coat of arms of Ukraine measuring 16x16 pixels. Please note that the Ukrainian layout for Mac OS X exists only in the basic version (see description above). To install the layout, copy the files from the archive to the ~/Library/Keyboard Layouts/ folder and log in. After that, go to System Preferences → Language & Text → Input Sources and enable the Ukrainian - Ilya Birman Typography layout. As far as we know, the layout should work fine on Mac OS X version 10.3.9 and higher (we were only able to test it on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and 10.7 Lion).

Version history

  • 2006 - version 1.0 (worked on Windows 2000/XP).
  • 2007 - version 1.1 (added Windows support Vista).
  • 2009 - version 1.2 (compatible with Windows 7, an alternative option has been added).
  • 2010 - Ukrainian typographic layout for Mac OS X.

Bonus track: standard Ukrainian layouts for Mac OS X

The standard Ukrainian keyboard layout in Mac OS X is terrible in all respects and is extremely unusual for those who switch to Mac from other operating systems (Windows, Linux). The fact is that the letters “i” and “and” are located in reverse. That is why we have made two of our own standard Ukrainian layouts for Mac OS X: with the “Makov” arrangement of punctuation marks (UA-Standard; ZIP, 4 KB) and with punctuation marks a la Windows (UA-Winkeys; ZIP, 4 KB). Installing these layouts is similar to the procedure for installing the Mac version of the typographic layout.
