iOS 10 on my iPhone. New editing menu. Quick access to music

On Tuesday, Apple released the final build of the new mobile operating system iOS 10. The platform is characterized by an updated Control Center, a new lock screen, and a redesign of many standard applications. iOS 10 boasts a large number of useful features that may not be obvious to the user when first getting acquainted with the OS.

System

1. Return to the usual unlocking method

In iOS 10, by default, after unlocking with your fingerprint, you remain on the lockscreen and are not taken to the home screen. For those who like the iOS 9 unlocking style, this is .

2. Ability to delete all messages in the Notification Center

Clear Instagram notifications up to five days in advance with a hard (or long) press of the X button in Notification Center.

3. Flashlight brightness settings

By pressing firmly on the flashlight icon in the Control Center, you can select the brightness level: strong, medium and weak.

4. Magnifier function

Do you want to make the world around you closer? All you have to do is use the new feature of iOS 10. Apple has built into the new operating system the best magnifying glass among all applications. Magnification provides a clear and high-quality picture. In order to activate the corresponding function, you need to go to Settings -> General -> Universal Access -> Magnifier

Messages

5. Increasing sticker size

After you have chosen a sticker to send in a message, you can make it larger or smaller with the usual two-finger gesture, and your interlocutor will display it in the size you selected.

6. Use stickers instead of emojis

More like trolling than a hidden feature, of course, but now stickers can be placed on top of anything, including images and emoji. Quite an interesting way to diversify correspondence.

7. Images are saved separately from attachments

If you are in a group chat where every second someone is sending some kind of attached file, or you just want to separate GIF files from archives, in the desired dialogue, go to the “Information” section and go to the very bottom. All attachments are already sorted into two different categories: images and attachments.

8. Read receipts in every chat

In iOS 10, read receipts became available for every conversation. The corresponding button is located in the same “Information” section.

9. Sending low quality images

Animated stickers and various GIFs take up a lot of space in the iMessage archive over time. To prevent your iPhone's memory from being filled with such content, go to Settings -> Messages and activate low quality mode.

Siri

10. Siri text can be corrected

It often happens that the Siri voice assistant does not recognize speech correctly. Instead of manually making edits to the text, you can now simply click on the recognized phrase, and Siri itself will offer several similar command options. This way, Siri will get better at recognizing your voice over time.

11. Siri can take selfies

If you ask Siri to take a selfie, the front camera will launch.

Cards

12. Siri, find my car

If your car has Bluetooth or CarPlay, Maps will automatically display its location, tell you when it was last used, and even let you add a photo.

You can also ask Siri, “Where is my car?” to get information about the car’s location and even get directions to it.

13. Public transport settings

For people who often use public transport, Apple added in iOS 10 the ability to customize which type of transport should be displayed. For example, you can hide train or ferry routes.

Mail

15. Sorting frequently used email categories

If you have the “Move” function selected in your mail settings by swiping left, the application will begin to offer different options for message categories thanks to machine learning. For example, “Coupons and discounts.”

16. Completing topics

iOS 10 introduces Thread Ending, which lets you see all the messages in a conversation, even if some have been moved to other inboxes. If you prefer the newest emails to appear at the top, activate the "Latest email on top" option in Settings -> Mail.

17. Automatic unsubscription from mailings

iOS 10 can detect emails that are automated and prompts you to unsubscribe immediately. Goodbye to searching for the “Unsubscribe” button in the small print at the bottom of a message.

Safari

18. Ability to quickly close all tabs

Do you want to close absolutely all tabs in your browser in one fell swoop? No problem, just hold down the tab access button in the lower right corner on an iPhone or in the upper right corner on an iPad, after which the system will prompt you to close all existing tabs. This operation does not clear your browser history.

19. View and delete individual website data

Want to get rid of a specific cookie or web data? Go to Settings -> Safari -> Add-ons -> Site Data.

Camera and Photo

20. RAW support in third-party applications

With the release of iOS 10, developers have the opportunity to work with images in RAW format. Apple has provided tools that allow you to add the ability to photo apps

21. Markup function

The Photos app now allows you to draw on a photo or screenshot, add text, etc. If you don't like your notes, you can always delete them.

Music

22. New playlist with favorite tracks

With iOS 10 and the new Apple Music app, the company added a customizable weekly selection of new music based on the user's music preferences. The playlist is updated every Friday, and if desired, you can save it to your own collection.

23. View lyrics

The new version of Apple Music allows you to view song lyrics. To do this, with the mini-player fully open, you need to swipe up. Although Apple announced this feature at WWDC 2016, many users find this feature difficult to find.

24. Space optimization

In older versions of iOS, Apple tried to implement automatic local library size management. With iOS 10 and Optimize Storage, you can still let the system do it for you, or customize your music collection yourself. At your discretion.

Other changes

25. Ability to save voice messages

26. Sleep mode

In iOS 10, the stock Clock app includes a feature called Sleep Mode. Apple suggests making the app setup process easier by asking a series of questions. The user is asked to indicate the required number of hours for sleep and active days of the week.

iPad improvements

27. Spotlight anywhere

If your iPad has a Smart Connector or a Bluetooth keyboard is connected to your tablet, you can bring up Spotlight from anywhere on your system with Command + Spacebar. The function also works in Split View mode. Thus, you can display any application in the left panel, even if it is not in the recent list (Command + Tab).

28. Different settings for touch and mechanical keyboards

Auto-correction and automatic capitalization can be useful when using a virtual keyboard, but this does not apply in any way to a mechanical one. With iOS 10, you can use different settings for the standard and Bluetooth keyboards.

Which shocked the world. Users of Apple electronics are delighted with the new OS and all thanks to the introduction of useful functions that were previously sorely lacking. And if the “nine” looks like a well-assembled and optimized mobile OS, then iOS 10, in addition to stability, has received a number of innovations! A bunch of new features that we will talk about now are very useful and necessary. Let's take a closer look at what's new in iOS 10:

iOS design

Basically, the design of the icons and, in general, the entire interface in iOS 10 has not changed. But some details were still subject to change. The following changes have been made to the design: notifications; Siri icon; applications clock, health, photo, maps, phone. In every application or in any other interface element, there are some significant changes. The new wallpapers perfectly harmonize with desktop icons and, as always, look great on iPhone screens.

iOS performance

The performance (speed) of devices has increased due to better OS optimization and the operating speed of iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch has increased. It’s very unusual when your old Apple gadget starts working faster. The battery consumption of devices has also changed for the better. Consumption has decreased. Apple gadget batteries work more economically than before. Such savings are achieved by reducing the consumption of hardware resources under various device loads.

New features in iOS 10

Apple highlighted 10 major innovations in iOS 10 for presentation at WWDC 2016. Honestly, half of these features would be enough to make you want to install the new axis on your device. Let's look at what's so wacky they presented to us in iOS 10:

Notification Center and Control Center

Using 3D Touch, you can see a preview of any information that the notification contains. Be it an SMS message, be it a message from a telegram, you can view it all using 3D Touch. By clicking on the notification, the entire message appears. For those who do not have 3D Touch support on their phone, there is a show button for those. Tap on it and the notification also shows more.

Control Center has changed in design and, frankly speaking, has become more pleasant. Switches for “airplane mode”, “wi-fi”, “bluetooth”, etc. Light up in different colors when switched on. There are indentations from the edges of the display, but the most important thing is that another one has been added to the usual Control Center - with music controls. Now you can control your music while in any application. Call the control center with the usual movement and scroll to the left to call the music control center.

Siri is even smarter

Siri is getting smarter every year and rightly so. Soon you will be able to talk to her as equals!

Siri is now open to applications (developers have been given an API) and this means that Siri will be able to work with applications directly, and not just open them. For example, we can ask her to write some kind of message to someone on Telegram or Viber, or in other messengers. You can Skype through Siri, you can call a taxi through Uber, and all without touching your phone. You can tell Siri to send money to a friend through e-wallet services or to find a specific photo in the Photos app. In the Photos app, Siri can recognize and remember objects located in photos. And that's not all that's new with Siri; there are many other uses.

Siri now has its own tab in the Settings menu and a new, beautiful icon. Siri can also speak in a male voice; this can be configured in Siri’s personal settings.

Quick Type

Quick Type suggestions have become smarter. When we type some message on the iOS keyboard, we are offered various hints, and so, now, the hints will be more accurate and useful. The keyboard in iOS 10 understands the context and style of your communication, and will suggest exactly what you would most likely write. Also, in iOS 10 a useful feature has appeared that searches in contacts and suggests a phone number that the interlocutor may ask you for in messages.

Photo

The Photos app has received a major update. Now, iPhones can recognize faces and objects in photos. If you tell the new Siri or write in a photo search: “show a photo of a car” or “bike,” then you will be offered those photos that depict the desired object. The Photos application has also changed a little in design. Firstly, all albums are located in a tiled version, and secondly, the “Edit” button, which includes the photo editor, has moved as an icon to the bottom panel of the application interface. And in place of the “Change” button, there is now a “Details” button. Most likely, this button will reveal more information about the image (such as the properties of the photo). And this is also a necessary function, it’s good that they added it. For now, when you click on this button, the “Photo” application crashes. So it is not yet possible to check what will open there. We are waiting for beta 2.

Another cool feature is “Mamories”. Memories. These are like separate albums that contain specially sorted photos. For example, a photo report of a family vacation or trip. All photos are sorted by specific places, friends and other events.

Also, in iOS 10, a slideshow appeared in the Photos application, which beautifully flips through photos accompanied by music that we can put on ourselves to make it more interesting to watch. Music, it seems, is only standard available. But it seems to me that this is a matter of time. It will be possible to install your own later. You can also write titles on photos (such as comments) and use different fonts for this.

The “Photo” application has been receiving a number of serious innovations for several years in a row, and this is pleasing; by the way, the editor has not received new functions, for some reason. I would like a more advanced editor, it’s time for Apple to get serious about the photo editor in iOS. For example, I very often resort to processing photos on my phone, because transferring photos to a computer and then trying to process them in Photoshop for a long time with a mountain of various settings is stressful. And additional applications for processing photos are not comme il faut. It’s easier to view a photo in the application and immediately get into the editor with one touch, and there it’s normal to quickly process it.

Cards

The Maps application has also undergone changes. A completely new application interface design has appeared, which is more efficient and comfortable to use. And also a couple of new features.

GPS works a little differently. When you drive a car, you can zoom out on the map to see what road awaits you next. The new maps have also improved the offer of recreational and food places within the radius of your location. The new apple maps already have new street names in Dnepropetrovsk. But what’s most pleasing is the new interface – it’s really better. All information about a specific place can be viewed in a collapsing/expanding window - the picture above shows how this is done.

Music

Music also received a new design, and, as Apple put it, this is a completely new music design. Yes, everything is a little different there now, but whether it will be useful is not yet known. It was customary to the previous arrangement of things. Now get used to the new.

But on the other hand, Apple Music has new categories, lyrics, TOP charts. I really liked that they fixed the letter navigation in the track list. Previously, in iOS 9, the alphabet of letters was located on the right and was not convenient to use, but now the alphabet is located on the left, the letters have become larger, and all tracks are located directly below the letters. In general, it has become easier to navigate by letters.

News

The design of the “News” application has changed. I don’t know who among the users of the CIS countries needs this, because we don’t have this application at all. But be aware that the design in the non-existent application has changed)). It has been said that the News app is read by 60 million users per month. Well, not a little, well done, but if Apple expanded into the CIS, there would be more users. Many would prefer the native Apple application to content from third-party applications.

HomeKit

With each new version of iOS, Apple introduces new standard applications. So, these are the “News”, “My Friends” applications and the updated “Passbook”, now called “Wallet”. And in iOS 10, this application became “Home”.

This is a hub application for managing the smart home system. Today, there are a lot of different appliances and devices that support HomeKit for remote control of your home or apartment. The “smart home” system is developing rapidly and Apple has participated in this, because their principle is to simplify people’s lives. This application can be downloaded to iPhone, iPad, iPod, Apple TV and Apple Watch to open the curtains or brew a kettle, or turn off the lights in the house using your device. Of course, you can’t get away with this with just one application, because you must have a “smart home” system.

You can tell Siri: “Good morning Siri” and in a pre-configured mode the curtains will open, morning music will turn on, and the kettle will turn on. In short, HomeKit is cool! But you can’t even enter it, because there is no connection to the “smart home” system - it simply hangs in search and connect mode all the time.

Phone app

The Phone application has also undergone changes. Voice Mail will now be translated into text. But few of us use voice mail. Another useful feature is SPAM. If some Avon or Oriflame calls you, the phone number will be signed as spam. What a convenience! Now we will know that spammers are calling and that we don’t have to answer them.

A useful feature is choosing a method to call a contact. For example, I set for a certain contact that calls to him will be made through Viber and when I press call to this contact, the iPhone will call him through Viber. And the screen will not be Viber, but a standard phone application. In addition to Viber, you can naturally choose other messengers, for example Telegram or Whatssup.

Messages and iMessage

Messages with iMessage have also undergone a major update. A lot of cool things were added to the correspondence. For example, you can watch a preview of the link that was sent to you in a message. It has become convenient to send photos, because to do this you do not need to open the screen with the “Photos” application; now the tile with photos will be instead of the keyboard, like in Facebook. The size of emoji smiles has become 3 times larger. Now, at least, it will be possible to see what is depicted and where.

Another cool feature related to emoticons is Tap to Replace. Some words that emoji mean can be converted into corresponding emoji. By clicking on a word, it will turn into an emoji smiley. New feature Bubble Effects: you can write a message with a special effect, such as the message twitching or dancing, or balls flying along with the message in the background of SMS correspondence, if, for example, you or you were congratulated on your birthday.

A very cool feature to write with invisible ink in iMessage. You send a message to your interlocutor, but he doesn’t see what’s written because the text/picture looks cloudy. But, if we go through the message, it gradually returns to its normal state and we see what is written/depicted. Isn't it cool? You wrote something important to someone, but that person is in the company of “other people’s eyes” and you don’t shoot him. Nobody sees anything. The person steps aside and deciphers the message without anyone else by tapping on the message. Also a very welcome feature.

You can also write and draw in iMessage. You can call the trackpad instead of the keyboard and draw something with your finger. The coolest thing is that the App Store for iMessage has appeared, where you can download stickers, keyboards, effects and other stuff. Apple decided to add to iMessage all those functions that have been present in Viber for a long time. The most important thing is that now you can create all these stickers, keyboards, effects, and make money by selling such things in the App Store for iMessage.

All these drawings, effects, stickers can only be written on iPad, iPhone and iPod, and only received on Apple Watch and Mac.

That's all. All a brief description of the key 10 functions of iOS 10. But in fact, there are a lot of new features and capabilities! Much more than ten. So, for example, you can edit Live Photos, you can launch Split View mode in Safari on iPad, i.e. work with two tabs simultaneously directly in the browser. Also, in iOS 10 the most long-awaited opportunity to hide standard applications has appeared. Or rather, remove icons of standard applications from desktops. Now, you can safely clean your desktops of unnecessary, unnecessary, standard applications.

Other innovations in iOS 10 that Apple was silent about

In addition to the main 10 features of iOS 10, which Apple showed at WWDC 2016, there are also unadvertised innovations. Let's take a closer look at what else interesting has appeared in iOS 10:

Dark theme for the Clock app

The Clock application has a dark theme and now looks easier on the eyes. Most often, we use the “Clock” application in the dark, before bed, to set the alarm for the right time and look at a black, dim screen much more pleasant than a white one. Checked, the eyes no longer strain.

Also, in the “Clock” application, a new “Bedtime” function has appeared, which allows you to set the alarm clock so that it will prompt us in the form of notifications when it is better to go to bed in order to get enough sleep. In fact, you can use both the “Bedtime” function and a standard alarm clock, i.e. two almost identical functions in one application. The standard alarm clock could have been cut out so it wouldn’t get in the way. Using the “Bedtime” function, data about your sleep is recorded in the “Health” application. If you have set up that you go to bed at 1.00 and get up at 9.00, then during this period of time the “Health” application will assume that you are sleeping, and attempts to log into the phone will be recorded in the log. This way you can see how many nights you woke up, what time you woke up, and how long you spent on your phone.

“Back to application” function in the status bar

A “Back to application” shortcut appears in the status bar if you have switched from one application to another via notification or redirection. Now, an icon in the form of a square with rounded corners with an arrow inside and the name of the application from which you came will be displayed.

iOS 10 release date

Now let's talk about the release date of the new OS. When will iOS 10 be released? – Apple has been developing the new iOS 10 all year and showed it on June 13 at the WWDC 2016 developer conference. But it will be possible to download iOS 10 only in September, because Apple traditionally introduces a new version of the mobile OS in June, then refines it all summer, fixing it errors and bugs. iOS 10 beta versions are being released all summer, which are tested by developers around the world and report problems to Apple. Apple fixes them, corrects them, and finally releases the finished, complete, corrected version as a public update in September along with the new iPhone. Therefore, the presentation is always in June, and the final release of iOS 10 is in September.

Download iOS 10 beta

Fortunately, we don’t have to wait the whole summer to get the long-awaited cool update on our iPhone or iPad - we can try iOS 10 at the beta testing stage. Apple will release public iOS 10 beta 1 for free download in July. You just need to register on beta.apple.com. But for developers, the beta version of iOS 10 is available now. When

This became clear even with the iOS 9.3 update, when the “Night Shift” function was released, which adjusts the display temperature so that it is convenient to read in low light and in bright light. And all devices that have older non-64-bit processors do not support this function. The iOS 9.3 update is installed on devices and works, but the function is not supported. This is how Apple is pushing older devices out of the market. They want them to buy new ones.

Will iOS 10 work on iPhone 5?

Yes, the iPhone 5 will support “10” and this is the smallest iPhone that supports iOS 10. Apparently Apple considers the iPhone 5 to still be a modern device and a workhorse. And so it is. I've been going with him for two years now and it's fine. Before installing iOS 10 I was lagging all the time, but now I notice how the speed has increased, applications work faster, they minimize faster, they open faster. This is what Apple optimization means.

Will iOS 10 work on iPhone 5S?

Everything is smooth with the old 5S. 100% iOS 10 support! iPhone 5S has modern, not outdated hardware. Accordingly, a 64-bit processor. By the way, this is the first iPhone that began to be equipped with 64-bit processors, so the iPhone 5S will support iOS 10. By the way, the iPhone SE will also support iOS 10, but this is obvious.

You can download the new official iOS 10 wallpapers right now. Save the image below to your phones and install. Also, you can look at different wallpapers for all iPhones.

Conclusion

iOS 10 has pleased us with a colossal number of new features and capabilities. I am always happy about the new iOS, because over the course of the whole year we receive a whole pack of new features that are pleasant and comfortable to use. And this year Apple did not disappoint us!

This is the coolest and most functional OS for iPhone and iPad since the existence of iOS. Other manufacturers can only envy Apple. After all, the company produces the most popular, high-quality OS for mobile devices with its own personal ecosystem. Until now, neither Android nor Windows Phone, nor other operating systems from other manufacturers have such a diverse and functional ecosystem as Apple iOS.

It's not exactly a hidden feature, no one is talking about this drastic design change in iOS 10. Instead of translucent effects, you'll have big bold header fonts. It looks amazing in music and news.

3. Redesigned windows in the control center

The control center now looks different, in the form of tiles. At first it seems that they can be edited. But this is not possible yet.

Yes, Control Center finally supports multiple panels. By swiping to the left we get another panel - the music control panel. It would be great if developers were given the opportunity to add applications to this panel.

4. Quick widget actions

Widgets support various quick actions, we hope all applications will support them. Unfortunately, these actions are only available with 3D Touch.

5. Hidden messages in iMessage

iMessage now lets you hide messages and apply other effects. To do this, you need to hold your finger on the send button (up arrow).

6. Widgets on the lock screen

Widgets are now integrated inside the active screen. And they have been removed from the notification center. If you want to access them on your locked screen, swipe left and that's it.

This will open up a whole world of possibilities for you. Now you can perform any action directly from the lock screen. So you can do things like convert currency or multiply with a calculator without unlocking your phone. If you want to remove any of the widgets, you will need to sign in with Touch ID.

7. Control your home from the Control Center

If you use HomeKit and set up the Home app, you can control your devices without unlocking your phone. Swipe up from the bottom to see Control Center and swipe left to see all your homekit devices.

8. Category tab in the app store

9. New Animations

The animations for opening and closing applications have changed slightly. When opened, the application window flies out of the icon, and when closed it returns to it.

10. New Folder View

In iOS 10, the folder is now almost transparent. There is no additional layer that was in .

11. New back button

The back arrow is now more pronounced. This dark square is much harder to miss than the one in iOS 9.X.

12. Lock icon in the status bar, indicating the screen is locked

When the screen is locked, a small lock icon appears in the status bar. Since it is now possible to confuse the active screen and the lock screen, for example when typing a message in iMessage, the icon icon should help you determine where you are.

13. Search from Notification Center

Search, which was previously only located in Spotlight, now appears in the notification center.

14. 3D Touch Quick Actions on the Notification Screen

This is really cool. When you press hard, you will see a list of additional options.

15. 3D Touch to access additional application functions from the control center

So far, this only works fully with 5 standard applications. Currently, additional actions are available for the flashlight, watch, calculator and camera.

16. Optimizing music storage

Now you can limit the use of internal memory for the Music application, so as not to waste extra gigabytes.

17. The Clock app becomes darker in color

Everyone was really hoping for (Dark Mode) Dark Mode in the new iOS. But at the moment it has become more convenient to set an alarm at night.

18. A new function in the watch - “Bedtime” will allow you to sleep better

Click on the “Bedtime” tab and answer a few questions about your sleep—what time do you go to bed, what time do you wake up, and what days do you wake up on?

Your iOS device will then notify you when you should go to bed and also wake you up. The Health app will then show your sleep data.

19. Individual reading

In iOS 10, you can view notifications either on the screen or during a call.

20. New keyboard sounds

The old sounds were much more familiar, but the new ones take some getting used to.

21. Skip toll routes in Apple Maps

The Apple Maps app now shows routes where you won't have to pay tolls.

22. Added cellular data management option to 3D Touch quick settings

When you press hard on the Settings icon (a little harder than usual), the quick settings menu will become available to you.

You can quickly go to the Cellular Data section to turn off cellular data or manage your data settings.

23. Take photos without stopping the music

Many people were annoyed by this feature of iOS. When you opened the “photo” application to take a photo, the music that was playing at that time stopped! With iOS 10, you can finally take photos and listen to music at the same time.

24. 3D Touch support in Spotlight search

When you're searching for an app or contact, you can use 3D Touch to hold on the search result and select an action. This was not the case in iOS 9.

25. Quick actions with favorite phone book contacts

One of the things that was hard to understand is why Apple lists 3 favorite contacts in the phone's Quick Actions. Finally, they decided to replace contacts with useful and quick actions. It's much more useful. But unfortunately, you can’t do this with messages.

Bonus

26. Storing search history

SpotLight now displays the latest searches. This will be useful if you let someone else use your device.

The WWDC 2016 conference is over, and one of the most anticipated premieres at the presentation was, of course, the new iOS 10. The mobile OS has acquired some really interesting features that will make using Apple mobile devices even more convenient.

Changes to the lock screen

To unlock your smartphone, you no longer need to swipe – just press the Home button. And moving your finger to the right now activates the camera.

Updates in iOS 10 are implemented in the form of interactive windows, rather than the usual “curtain” - pressing a little harder allows you to access expanded content. 3D Touch is used for this, which means this change will be global only for iPhone owners after 6S.

Removing built-in applications

Probably, for most experienced iPhone and iPad owners, they were quietly collecting dust somewhere in a folder called “Unnecessary”. Now, users finally have the long-awaited opportunity to finally remove them from their desktop.

If desired, you can always install them back from the App Store. True, as before, they will be preinstalled by default on new devices.

Siri has become available to developers

Now they will be able to use the power of the voice assistant in their applications and games, which makes the potential of its possible use enormous. For example, you can dictate a text to Siri and ask her to send it as a message to one of the recipients, for example, on Viber. Siri, in turn, can use data from third-party applications, such as numbers or text.

It must be said that the closeness of Apple’s virtual assistant to third-party developers has long been the reason for criticism of the company. Now, thanks to the open API, you can communicate with her as with a person, for example, ask her to open the latest article on her favorite site.

New Photos app features

The system will learn to recognize people’s faces in photos, mark them and add tags. For example, assign geotags based on the location where the photo was taken and recognize landscapes and terrain. Also, using the standard application, you can create beautiful side shows with animation effects and music, combining photos and videos in one video.

QuickType

The quick input function in the virtual keyboard will be able to suggest entire phrases and expressions, as well as insert events from your calendar and contacts from the phone book into the input field.

Updated Maps

The Maps application has received a complete redesign, navigation capabilities have been improved, traffic information and other goodies for motorists have been added. Third-party developers have gained access to the Apple Maps API, which will give them the opportunity to implement interaction with them in their applications.

Apple Music redesign

In addition to the new design, aimed at improving usability, the music service has received a number of interesting features, including displaying song lyrics and a separate tab for downloaded tracks.

In addition to the listed global innovations, iOS 10 also introduced such interesting features as:

  • unlocking Mac using Touch ID on iPhone;
  • new design of Apple News, in Flipboard style;
  • Home application (evolution of HomeKit), for controlling smart electronics in the home;
  • full-screen animation, hidden entries and read receipts in iMessage;
  • male voice in Siri
  • on-the-fly filters and stabilization in Live Photos;
  • iCloud folder sharing;
  • and other useful features.

And here is the official video that demonstrates the capabilities of iOS 10:

Devices that can be updated to iOS 10

Since many of our readers are in no hurry to update their devices annually, they are probably already wondering which of them will be able to upgrade to the tenth version of the operating system. You can see the full list of supported iPhone and iPad models below.

The update will most quickly become available to beta testers, and all other users will be able to download it in the fall, after the release of the iPhone 7.

Let me make a reservation right away that I studied the operation of the platform on four devices - iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE and iPad Pro. All devices were actively used for six months to two years and were updated either from iOS 9.3.5 or from a public beta version. So I can’t judge how the platform behaves on earlier devices—let me remind you that you can update devices starting with the iPhone 5 and iPad mini 2.

Installation

First, let’s clarify the question of whether it’s worth upgrading to iOS 10. In my opinion, given the growing number of cyber threats, it’s always worth installing a new software platform, at least for the sake of security-related updates. Therefore, if you have not yet installed iOS 10, then it is worth doing so, especially since Apple almost immediately released iOS 10.0.1 with the correction of initial errors.

The over-the-air update went well on two of the four devices. An attempt to update the iPhone 6s Plus and iPad Pro was not so successful - the devices were blocked and required connecting to iTunes. As it turned out, this problem affected many owners of iOS devices, and it was confirmed by Apple representatives.

To solve this, you need to have a computer with the latest version of iTunes at hand, download the software onto it first, and then complete the installation on your mobile device. During such an operation, the user sees a message that if the update is unsuccessful, the device will have to be restored, which means erasing all content and settings. Therefore, in order to avoid such trouble, it is worth making a full backup of the device before updating. To do this, you will either need enough space in iCloud, or again, a computer at hand.

Among other problems after installing iOS 10 on the support forum, some users noted faster battery drain, incorrect Bluetooth operation and loss of compatibility with a number of third-party accessories. (I’ll also note bugs in the operation of a number of previously installed applications - editor’s note.) However, apparently, these are isolated cases that do not affect the majority of users.

Another point worth considering. The update to iOS 10, depending on the device, weighs 1-2 GB, so you need to check in advance whether there is enough space on the device - this is especially true for 16 GB versions.

Why update?

While Apple typically includes dozens or even hundreds of new features in major iOS releases, not all of them are regularly used in everyday life. I’ll tell you about those that will surely affect your experience with an iOS device.

1. Lock screen

A number of innovations related to the lock screen are well known to Android users. First, the screen “wakes up” when you pick up the device. However, this only works starting from iPhone 6s. In addition, in some Android gadgets this function has more variations - for example, waking up the screen when you hold your palm over the device. So here Apple is clearly catching up.

From the lock screen you can now work with notifications from various applications without unlocking the device - for example, reply to messages, watch videos. For owners of the iPhone 6s/7 series, the range of these capabilities is expanded with 3D Touch - they can approve a subscription request or view a publication on Instagram or Twitter, or start previewing a link.

“Swipes” from bottom to top and top to bottom on the lock screen have not changed and bring up the control center and notification center, respectively. Swiping from left to right now accesses search and widgets, and from right to left accesses the camera.

A noticeable change was the design of notifications and widgets - instead of dark sections, they are now replaced by light, rounded blocks. Due to the fact that each notification is now in a separate block, and even with a separate line for the application name (in previous versions this role was played by program icons), the notifications section now looks a little cumbersome. But the same design in a notification that pops up on the lock screen looks nice.

Fears that a constantly active screen would drain the battery were not justified. But unless the user has changed their security settings, anyone who picks up their phone can now see all the latest notifications and even interact with them.

You get used to rich notifications very quickly - I caught myself thinking that during the week I never went to iMessage or WhatsApp to respond to an incoming message. (Moreover, sometimes you even specifically return to the lock screen to see all the notifications there at once - editor's note.) But deleting missed notifications from the notification center will now take longer.

And here I will talk about three hidden features of iOS 10. On a device with 3D Touch, you can clear all notifications at once by deep-pressing the X in the notification center. Deep-pressing the flashlight in the control center will allow you to select its brightness. And if you go to the screen settings, you can disable the function of waking up the screen when you rise (Rise to Wake).

In general, the lock screen is now another additional iOS interface, which turned out to be quite successful. The degree of usefulness is 9 out of 10.

2. Unlock

After playing with the lock screen, let's move on. Previously, all you had to do to unlock your iPhone or iPad using Touch ID and launch the main screen with apps was place your finger on the Home button. Unlocking with a password was started by swiping from left to right.

Now the device can also be unlocked by placing your finger on the button. But in this case, the user will only see the “Today” screen with the date, time and widgets. To bring up the application screen, you will have to press this button. If your device is not configured with Touch ID, you will also have to tap to open the password screen.

To be honest, this innovation is not entirely clear to me. Unless Apple was preparing us for the changed Home button in the iPhone 7. But this option seemed very inconvenient to me. That's why - here is the fourth hidden function. By going to “Settings” - “Universal Access” - “Home”, you can return the opening of the screen by touching your finger (He folds in a deep bow in front of Alina and runs to turn off this horror - editor's note).

Considering that after a couple of days of trying to get used to the new unlock, I returned to the previous version, the degree of usefulness is 3 out of 10.

3. Messages

We've already touched on the innovations related to working with messages in iOS 10. However, let's talk in more detail about iMessage, an application that, according to Apple, has received a major update.

Apparently, by this Apple meant turning iMessage into a “stylish, fashionable, youthful” messenger with stickers, GIFs and various visual effects. However, in my opinion, in an effort to add as many features as possible, the developers pushed the intuitiveness of the UI into the background. At least several iPhone owners from my circle still haven’t figured out where and how to add special effects.

So, as before, we enter or dictate a regular iMessage message in a special line. You can add intonation to the message - a long press on the “up arrow” icon will bring up the effects menu. Some of them apply to the message itself - a "clap" will cause the message to fall onto the screen, a "loud" or "soft" change in font size, and "invisible ink" will have to be erased first before the text can be seen. Other effects - “balls”, “confetti”, “lasers”, “fireworks” - unfold on the entire screen with sound.

Next, use the “Photo” icon to add a photo or video. By clicking on the selected photo, you can edit it, add handwritten markings or text, and trim the video. To create a drawing yourself, you need to click on the “Heart” icon in the iMessage menu bar.

Finally, the third icon in the row is for various add-ons, including stickers, handwritten messages and music. Apple has provided developers with another channel for monetization - many sticker collections are paid and are sold at a price not lower than standard applications. You can now view all iMessage Apps, including chatbots, stickers, and utilities, in a dedicated section of the App Store.

Another non-obvious feature will appeal to those who pay for a limited data package. In the message settings, you can select “Low quality mode,” which reduces the size of sent pictures and photos.

In general, the capabilities in iMessage have increased. However, I personally played enough with most of them already in the first week, leaving stickers, photo editing and reactions to inboxes in my permanent “arsenal”. It is possible that this was influenced by the fact that most features are not obvious or intuitive.

Perhaps if Apple tweaks the interface and third-party developers release more useful (and inexpensive) applications, iMessage's potential will be better revealed. In the meantime, the usefulness rating is 6 out of 10.

The Siri update in iOS 10 has become perhaps the most anticipated among developers. Apple has released the Siri SDK, which means third-party developers can now integrate their applications with the voice assistant.

It sounds good, but in practice everything turned out to be not so smooth. Firstly, Siri, which I actively use on my iPhone, suddenly stopped recognizing my pronunciation after the update. So, he managed to understand the word “Uber” only the fifth time. Almost like in video about the Scots and the elevator.

When he finally recognized that I wanted to order an Uber taxi, he demanded that I go into my geolocation settings and allow Siri access to my geolocation information. Needless to say, Uber had this data? That is, there is no need to talk about complete integration.

An attempt to send a WhatsApp message using Siri, post a photo on Instagram, and recognize a song in Shazam was successful. But it was not possible to get the assistant to perform actions on Facebook, Messenger, YouTube, Google Maps and Skype - according to Siri, these developers have not yet configured this functionality.

Among the hidden features of Siri is the launch of the front camera. To do this, just ask your assistant to take a selfie.

The conclusion is that the usefulness of the Siri update is now directly in the hands of application developers. For now, we'll rate it 6 out of 10.

5. Photo

The standard iOS photo app now has additional sorting functions. The new “Memories” section collects the user’s best photos, according to iOS, and makes selections for a certain period of time, with specific people, from certain places and for specific dates. The best photos are combined into a slideshow with superimposed sound.

The app’s selections by places and people are quite successful—face, object, and place recognition technologies make themselves felt. However, with the best photos, everything is not so smooth. It’s not easy to understand the selection algorithm - mine included both selfies and landscapes, as well as screenshots, saved pictures and other pictures in random chronological order.

Of course, the selection can be edited, but not every user wants to bother with this. Moreover, a number of third-party applications have similar functions.

At the same time, the Photos application has a nice addition for owners of the iPhone 6s/7 series. Most of the editing options for regular photos are now available for Live Photos.

In general, the Photos update can be regarded as useful, but with the condition that Apple improves the photo selection algorithms. Therefore, for now we give it a rating of 7 out of 10.

6. Other functions

The smaller updates in iOS 10 are also worth noting. One of them is the new design of Apple Music. It has simplified the search for new songs and albums, added song lyrics, and made it easier to understand which songs are downloaded to the device and which remain online.

For some reason, the announced collaboration on notes only worked on the iPad—the corresponding icon never appeared in the iPhone app. Another iPad-only feature is split-screen splitting into two windows in Safari.

Apple browser users can check out another hidden iOS 10 feature on both iPhone and iPad. A long press on the tabs icon will bring up a menu from which you can close all open tabs with one click.

Finally, a sleep mode has appeared in the Clock application - the user can set up daily reminders about wake-up and bedtime.

Of course, these are not all the new features of iOS 10. However, it is the small innovations listed that can be given a usefulness rating of 9 out of 10.

What was not useful

If I used all the previous functions in one way or another within a week, then the next two updates were of no use to me.

The first of these concerns Apple Maps. According to Apple, the cards have been redesigned, and third-party applications can now be integrated with them. At the bottom of the application screen, a section appeared with a list of places where the user theoretically wants to go. These include frequently visited places, places that the user searched for, for example, on Foursquare, addresses in the calendar and in mail.

However, the detail of the maps still leaves much to be desired. Sometimes offline mode is not enough. And a number of functions of integrated applications - for example, ordering a table - will not be able to be used by iPhone and iPad owners in Russia. Accordingly, the usefulness rating is 2 out of 10.

The second new product is the Home app for controlling HomeKit-compatible smart home electronics. The usefulness of this function can only be appreciated by those users who have such electronics. In my case, this application goes into the rarely used folder.

Let's sum it up

As practice has shown, it’s worth installing iOS 10 for the sake of a new lock screen, new notifications with quick actions, updated iMessages and a number of small nice additions. I was pleased that some subjectively inconvenient settings, including Raise to Wake or unlocking, can be returned to their previous mode.

However, the company still needs to work on some aspects - Siri integration with third-party applications, photo sorting and Apple Maps functionality.

Perhaps the biggest disappointment is that many of the features in iOS 10 are gradually losing their intuitiveness - one of the main advantages of iOS over other mobile platforms. I would like to believe that in the pursuit of expanding functionality, Apple will not begin to ignore users who love the iPhone and iPad precisely for the maximum clarity of the interface.
