Mountains Cheget and Elbrus. About the city of Elbrus. Cafes and restaurants in the Elbrus region

This time our path lay through the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria, the city of Nalchik. It took about two hours to travel from Nalchik to Terskol. The road is good and picturesque, especially in summer, when there is a lot of sun and greenery. A couple of kilometers short of Terskol, we turned into the Cheget clearing. Don't get lost, there is a sign there.

The purpose of our trip was to climb Mount Cheget. Translated from Balkar it means “northern” or “in the shadow”. The weather turned out to be wonderful, the sky without a single cloud, just what you need for beautiful photographs. In anticipation of vivid impressions, we arrived at the ski lift at 8 am.

There were still few tourists, the cable car opened at 9, and we had an hour of time left, which we decided to spend in a cafe with a cup of coffee.

Cheget is famous for its ski slopes in winter and hiking routes in summer. Beginner skiers have nothing to do here; the slopes are designed for experienced athletes.

Look at the diagram, the tracks are mostly red and blue.

Both professionals and amateurs climb to the top on foot, but if you spent a year lying on the couch, it will be difficult. The climb is quite serious. Local guides take those wishing to climb Elbrus here for initial acclimatization before the hike.

Any equipment can be rented. There is everything you need in both winter and summer.

In fact, Polyana Cheget is a small town with its own tourist infrastructure. Many hotels, hotels, cafes. The place is quite popular among foreigners. English and German speech could be heard everywhere.

There is a market and shops. You can buy almost everything, including clothes, food and souvenirs. There is a Sberbank ATM in the lobby of the Cheget boarding house, pharmacies, and a first-aid post.

It is better to book hotels in advance; there is a chance that you will not find a suitable room. Moreover, the flow of recreation lovers in the Elbrus region is increasing every year.

Closer to 9 am, the clearing began to noticeably come to life. Groups of tourists walked to the top. There was a noticeable increase in cars, and the barbecues in the cafe began to smoke.

Finally we waited for the cable car to open. The price of one ticket is 700 rubles. Cards are accepted, but there are problems with the bank. Which is what we did, it’s good that we had cash.

Chairlift, open. On the first stage - Cheget-1 there are double chairs, the lift length is 1600 meters. And so we set off upward.

There is no point in writing about the views that gradually open up with every meter. Look at the photos, or better yet, go for yourself!Elbrus is clearly visible. A fascinating experience, that’s exactly what we went for.

Stop at Cheget-2. We walked a bit near the famous cafe Ai. The height here is 2720 meters, the height difference is about 650 meters.

Just below is an observation deck overlooking the Baksan Gorge and the Cheget clearing.

I was surprised by the girl who stood on the stone below under the cable car and took pictures of everyone. Looking ahead, keep in mind that you will find your photo on the wall with magnets when you go downstairs. You can buy it for 100 rubles. We liked the surprise. So don’t skimp on your girl’s smiles!

The forest gave way to rocks, and the first glaciers appeared.

So, enjoying the pictures of Cheget and Elbrus, we reached the final point of the climb.

Having risen a little higher, we reached a snowfield. We took pictures on a cliff, with Elbrus in the background.

The village of Azau was visible far below, and opposite we saw Devichy Kosy waterfall, where we climbed on foot this year. The road to the waterfall was clearly visible, and we recalled our journey with pleasure and looked for familiar places.

Don't rush to go back down. Make a little effort and cross to the other side of the gorge. You don’t need any special equipment here, just comfortable shoes.

The view from here was no less impressive. We saw the famous Semerka glacier. Unfortunately, we do not know the names of all the mountains and gorges.

The lake was visible below. Moreover, the water in it was multi-colored. We urgently need to study the geography of these places.

Witnessed a photo session of a beautiful young couple for their wedding album. Mount Cheget is ideal for photo tours. We have never seen more spectacular places to take pictures.

After taking a huge number of photographs, we went down to the cafe. They offer signature berry tea, essentially hot compote, very tasty. And sweets - baklava, brushwood, buns. Prices are slightly higher than below. Tea and coffee cost about 100 rubles, a piece of sweets costs about 150.We climbed up to drink tea on a huge rock. It tastes better this way!

What we would recommend for traveling to Cheget in the summer. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, small stones crumble under your feet and you can fall. Use protective sunscreen on your face; at altitude you can burn very quickly and unnoticed. It is better to choose clothes with long sleeves and be sure to have something warm with you. Sunglasses are recommended.

I really didn’t want to leave, but I had to go down. The brightest emotions on the way down! Especially if you are afraid of heights! The Baksan Gorge is in full view. The last photos, and here we are below, in the clearing.

Many tourists prefer to dine here. They even come specially from Azau and Terskol. Prices are the same everywhere. Shorpa 150-200 rubles, khychin 60-100 rubles, kebab 250-300 rubles for a small skewer. For 300-400 rubles you can have a very hearty lunch. We always order shorpa, after a dry meal on the road, a liquid, rich lamb soup, seasoned with garlic and pepper - just what we need.

Finally we walked around the market. How can you leave without a souvenir? For 100 rubles we bought some kind of shaggy creature. They said that he (or she) protects the house, like our brownie.

We went to Terskol to spend the night. After the last trip, when we spent half the night looking for a hotel room, this time we were prepared in advance. Booked for hotel "Dome". A standard double room cost 2000 rubles.

We lived on the fourth floor, with a view of Cheget from the balcony. The construction “scenery” around spoiled the impression a little, but this is all temporary. Parking for as many cars as possible. Downstairs there is a cafe with traditional local cuisine. The room is very cozy, the bathroom and shower are clean. There is a refrigerator, TV. WI-FI access.

I didn’t like that there was no kettle or cooler with hot water in the room. There are no options for making tea or coffee yourself in the morning, and the cafe is still closed at 8:00. I had to have breakfast elsewhere.

Book a hotel in advance on booking.com or on hotellook.ru both services have been verified, on the second you can find a lower price.

Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe, is an extinct volcano and consists of two peaks. The Western peak has a height of 5642 m, the Eastern peak - 5621 m. The distance between the peaks is approximately 3 km.

Elbrus is one of the Seven Summits - the seven highest peaks of the seven parts of the world.

Terskol

Terskol is a village in the Elbrus region of Kabardino-Balkaria, part of the rural settlement of Elbrus.

The village was built for the residence of service personnel in the Elbrus region recreational area. This is the main ski center of the former USSR and present-day Russia. In the center of the village there is a control and rescue service, which is one of the most powerful services in the structure of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations.

The Terskol tourist center is located in the village - it belongs to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

A number of travel companies operate regular bus services “Moscow-Terskol-Moscow”.

Regular bus tourist and excursion flights are also organized from Nalchik (133 km) and Pyatigorsk (155 km) and other cities.

What sights of the Elbrus region did you like? Next to the photo there are icons, by clicking on which you can rate a particular place.

Polyana Azau

Glade Azau is the highest inhabited point in the Elbrus region. It is located at an altitude of 2300 meters between the slopes of Elbrus and the village of Terskol.

Azau is not only the name of the clearing, but also the famous Elbrus glacier. There are many versions of the translation of this word. The first option says that Azau is translated as “a place where there are no people.” And the second variation sounds like “a place where mountains are rarely crossed.” In any case, both meanings of this name are ungodly outdated. People often come here to visit the mountains, go on hiking excursions, or simply relax in nature.

You will not be able to drive further than this clearing. Here, abutting Elbrus, the asphalt road ends, which runs through the Baksan Gorge. Already at the entrance to Azau, along the road, there are dozens of hotels and tourist centers. In the clearing itself, they are lined up along the perimeter, forming a square in the center. Cafes, kebab shops and restaurants are neatly located between the hotels. Naturally, there are rental points for climbing and sports equipment. So you can safely leave all the bulky gear at home.

The Baksan Gorge is one of the most famous not only in Kabardino-Balkaria, but throughout the Central Caucasus. According to statistics, purely travelers who come here annually are two to three times more than the total population of Kabardino-Balkaria. There are two reasons for this popularity. Firstly, the Baksan Gorge is the road to the foot of Elbrus and Cheget. Secondly, this is an incredibly beautiful and unusual place.

The gorge is named after the Baksan River, which begins from the glaciers of Elbrus and flows into Malka, a tributary of the Terek. This is the largest river flowing from Elbrus. The river accompanies the traveler along the entire length of the road, makes noise, rolls over numerous rapids, turning over huge blocks of stone. You can’t even swim in it, it’s almost impossible to even cross.

Mount Cheget

Chege"t is a Caucasus mountain with a height of 3769.3 m near Elbrus, a popular tourism destination and a skiing center. Located in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic of the Russian Federation.

There are currently 4 lifts and three lines on Mount Cheget. On the first stage there are double-chair and single-chair lifts, on the second - single-chair, and on the third - rope tow (passes are not valid on it, skiing is for an additional fee). The speed of the lifts is low, queues are a common occurrence.

From Cheget there is a beautiful view of the Baksan Gorge, the village of Terskol, the double-headed Elbrus on one side and Donguz-Orun, Kogutai and Nakru on the other.

On the slope of Mount Cheget in the second stage, at an altitude of 2719 m, there is a cafe “Ai” and a convenient observation deck. The main hotels built in recent years on the Cheget meadow offer a decent level of service, but in snowy years it is necessary to take into account that only two - “Cheget” and “Ozone” - are safe in the event of an avalanche.

Baksan River

Baksa"n is a river in the North Caucasus in Kabardino-Balkaria, the right tributary of the Malka (Terek basin). The length of the river is 173 km, the area of its drainage basin is 6800 km².

Baksan originates from glaciers in the Elbrus region. In the upper reaches of the Baksan and its tributaries there are the mountaineering camps Baksan, Dzhan-Tugan, Elbrus and others, the Elbrus National Park, and the Terskol Observatory.

The food is glacial, snow and underground.

On the Baksan River there are the cities of Tyrnyauz and Baksan, opposite the confluence with the Malka - the city of Prokhladny.

The waters are used for irrigation (Baksan irrigation system), and the Baksan hydroelectric power station is located on the river.

Cafe Ai

The ascent to Mount Cheget begins from a clearing where numerous hotels and cafes are located. Here is the starting point of the double chair lift, which will take you to the famous cafe “Ai”, which means Moon.

The cafe is located at an altitude of 2750 meters. Its round building, perched on an artificially created site right on the mountainside, has been hospitably welcoming skiers and snowboarders for many years. Built in the 60s, it was the first and, perhaps, the only high-mountain cafe in the USSR. His image, circulated in numerous postcards, photographs and badges, became the calling card of the Elbrus region.

This place is truly iconic. The cafe is inextricably linked with bards and original songs. They say that Yuri Vizbor loved to stay in a hut near the Ai cafe. Here the lyrics of his new songs and plots for stories were born. In the 90s, the cafe "Ai" served as a film set for the film "Breakfast with a View of Elbrus" - an adaptation of Vizbor's story of the same name.

They say that this cafe serves the most delicious khychin - flatbread with potatoes and cheese or meat. From the observation deck of the cafe, over a cup of fragrant tea or aromatic mulled wine on a sunny day, it is pleasant to admire the double-headed peak of Elbrus and the picturesque Baksan Valley stretching into the distance.

Cable car on Elbrus

Mount Elbrus is extremely loved by skiers from all over the world, and this is no coincidence. Firstly, the mountain is covered with snow and ice 12 months a year, which allows you to ski at any convenient time, not excluding autumn and spring, which is rare. Secondly, the slopes of the mountain are generally gentle, and a total of 15 kilometers of trails are laid on them. The longest is “Old Horizon – Azau” 2500 meters.

The peak of Mount Elbrus is at an altitude of 5,642 meters. The cable car rises to 3,850 meters. And you can also climb to a height of 4,800 meters using snowcats (vehicles on wide tracks).

The lifts on Elbrus consist of three cable car lines. Stage 1: Azau - Krugozor, as the name suggests, runs from Azau station (2,350 meters) to Stary Krugozor station (3000m). There are 2 parallel roads on this section: the old one (“Elbrus 1” is a pendulum type road, travel time is 15 minutes) and the new one (“Elbrus” is a gondola road, travel time is 5 minutes. Capacity is 2400 people per hour. There are places to eat and drink tea or coffee at the stations.

2nd stage: Horizon - World. It also consists of an old pendulum road (“Elbrus-2”) and a new gondola road (“Elbrus”). Runs from Stary Krugozor station (3,000 meters) to Mir station (3,500 meters). The travel time of the new gondola is 5 minutes 13 seconds.

3rd stage: road Mir - Gara Bashi. On this section the Elbrus road operates - a cable-chair type. The road starts from Mir station (3,500 meters) and runs to Gara-Bashi station (3,850 meters). This is an old lift that is 1 chair wide.

Glacier "Seven"

Russia / Kabardino-Balkarija / Elbrus / The Semerka glacier is one of the most picturesque glaciers in the Elbrus region. The glacier got its name "Seven" from its shape, reminiscent of the number "7".

Valley of Narzans

The name of the valley, located in the foothills of the Rocky Range of the Greater Caucasus, speaks for itself. Here, in a picturesque place along the Khasaut River, almost 20 sources of mineralized water of the Narzan type come to the surface. Their water belongs to the carbonic bicarbonate-chloride sodium-calcium type with mineralization up to 3.3 g/l and carbon dioxide content up to 2.2 g/l. Heavily carbonated with carbon dioxide.

The Narzan Valley is closed on all sides by high ridges. Its peculiar isolation and solitude, of course, affected the local atmosphere. The grandeur and inaccessibility of the mountains, the colorful carpet of subalpine meadows, forests of slender fir trees, the purest air - such places, as a rule, influence a person in the most favorable way, cleanse, inspire. And here they also improve their health. In addition, Elbrus is visible from here, and this is one of the best views of the famous mountain.

The path goes through the Narzan Valley to the warm mineral spring of Djily-Su, located at the foot of Elbrus. From here you can go to the waterfalls on the Khasaut and Musht rivers. Favorable climatic conditions allow you to make hikes and excursions to the Narzan Valley at almost any time of the year. There is also a tourist center of the same name, a cafe and a shop.

Monument to the first conquerors of Elbrus

If you ever decide to visit the Elbrus region, your path will pass by the monuments to the two first conquerors of Elbrus. Karachay Khilar Khachirov and Balkar Ahiya Sottaev stand opposite each other - as the personification of human courage and bravery.

The official date of the conquest of Elbrus is considered to be 1829, when an expedition was organized led by the head of the Caucasian fortified line, General G.A. Emmanuel. The expedition was scientific in nature. It consisted of more than 20 people. Elbrus was conquered at the cost of great effort: many participants showed signs of altitude sickness, which could lead to death, and therefore, at an altitude of 4270 m, it was decided to go down.

Karachai resident Hillar Khachirov continued the ascent alone.

On July 10, 1829, he was the first to set foot on the top of Elbrus, strengthened a pole on it, surrounded it with stones and, as evidence, left his hat. The news of the first ascent of Elbrus spread across many countries.

Elbrus region– this is an amazing part with stunning mountain nature, which stretches from the western part of Elbrus to the Chegem River in the east. This is where the highest mountains of the Greater Caucasus are located.

We will definitely see some of this today, though only after we resolve the issue of overnight accommodation. The last driver warned us that for setting up a tent in an undesignated place, a fine of about 2,000 rubles could be imposed. Therefore, I stood in front of one of the recreation centers, wondering whether to ask them for a cheaper place, or to ask where I could spend the night for free. Then he waved his hand and went to “board.”

Free tent site.

In the reception hall I was met by an older woman, whose eyes immediately lit up at the sight of a tourist (and it was not the season). I found out from her that putting up a tent on the territory of the base will cost us 150-200 rubles. per person. Frankly, I didn’t want to pay at all for something that could chill me to the bone at night. And she refused to enlighten me about the free options, so Mila and I decided to try our luck at other bases.

The next one looked completely abandoned with a sad gray Soviet building on the floor, and small wooden houses on the back lot. Memories of children's camps surfaced from my memory when I looked at the drawings that were on the walls.

After wandering around, we noticed a nice place behind the houses. Just who should I ask? I walked around the large building until I saw light on the ground floor. And then he knocked on the nearest door. An elderly woman with a rather peculiar sense of humor emerged from there. I didn’t ask her about paying for a tent site, but immediately asked about the possibility of a free overnight stay.

Granny thought about it, smiled, and allowed us to stick the tent right where we wanted it. I was even surprised that everything turned out so easily. But it turned out that the grannies (there were two of them in the room) worked here at a children’s ski camp before retiring. Nowadays, purely out of connections, they come for the summer out of old memory to heal their health with the mountain air, and to relax in the silence of the forest, and at the same time they look after the area. In general, we were lucky, what else is there to talk about :).

Valley and Mount Cheget.

I slept incredibly cold, and in the morning I didn’t even want to get out of the “mini-house”. Unless we wait until the sun reaches us and warm up. Yesterday I agreed with the grannies that we would stay here for a couple of days, at the same time I clarified about the routes and about the ski lift.

The Elbrus region has three valleys: Azau, Terskol and Cheget. We were interested in the latter, and Baba Sveta talked about him the most. Cheget is the name of not only the valley, but also the village nearby and the mountain, near Elbrus, famous among freerider skiers around the world.

Baba Sveta immediately figured out what kind of travelers we were, so she told us a couple of secrets about how you can use the lift for free. There are three lines on Mount Cheget (three levels or three platforms). The first line is the longest and most popular. Down at the site they charge for the entire lift at once, no matter how far up you go, but you will have to pay at least 500 rubles. even in the summer season.

So, you can climb to the first stage on foot, but to the second and third, including the return descent, they won’t ask for a ticket, that is, you can use the lift for free. We decided to take advantage of this when we hitchhiked first to the small village of Cheget.

We were given a lift by local young guys who themselves landed on the lower platform approaching Mount Cheget. Here, of course, every 5 meters there is a hotel, a cafe, or a souvenir shop. Even the low season doesn’t scare anyone; there are plenty of tourists here. I am glad that that morning we were also lucky with the weather and from time to time even the sun showed up.

In winter, Cheget has several slopes, among which everyone can choose what they can do. And now, in the summer, instead of skiers, you can see many suicide cyclists here. They descend from such steep heights at tremendous speed that there is simply no other way to call them.

This is how you slowly climb up the mountain, pluck raspberries, admire the mountain scenery, and then from behind some pine tree this miracle on wheels flies out to you. And they’re not afraid.

There were no brave tourists to climb the mountain on foot. During our climb we met only two people. The first were a father and son who bought a ticket for the ski lift, but the boy was so afraid of heights that they did not climb further than the first stage and actually walked back.

And the second was a woman who, judging by her uniform and trekking poles, was very fond of mountain hiking trails. By the way, it was she who advised us, before we get to the first site, to follow the path to the left behind the blue sign and admire the mountain lake.

True, she warned that a passport is enough for Russians, but foreigners need to have a special (and obviously not free) permit, which will be checked by border guards along the way.

Mountain lake and rain.

They say that there are more than 300 sunny days a year in the Elbrus region. Apparently that day we were among the remaining 65 :). Because the morning clarity gradually began to give way to gray clouds and a piercing wind.

The path to the lake turned out to be not short at all, and we never came across the promised border guards on the way, although I saw a watchtower on a hill in the distance. Thoughts began to appear in our heads that we were lost when the first outlines of a green mountain lake finally appeared ahead.

The closer we got, the more details revealed themselves.

For example, from above, I began to make out some white inscriptions near the lake. Approaching even closer, I realized that I could go down there and put some kind of inscription with large stones like “Vasya was here”; from above it would look very impressive.

In addition, between the bushes I distinguished several colored dots, which means tourists are really going down there. Mila and I were frozen in indecision whether to follow their example, when suddenly a downpour that began quite suddenly decided everything for us.

This is not a forest where you can at least hide under the crown of a tree. Here on the half-naked mountain the nearest roof was only on the first platform or in that military booth. Mila and I and all the tourists who were now at the lake (at that moment I did not envy them) hurried back the way, gradually getting wet through and through, coupled with the piercing cold wind.

We even caught up with some other tourists, who also decided to go down to the lake, and now were hastily returning to the first line. Frankly, I thought they would immediately try to pull the handle of the watchtower, because it was very far to the next shelter, but the guys ran past without even trying. And I immediately went to the door, pulling the handle with all my strength. Surprisingly, the door was unlocked and there was no one inside.

It wasn't very warm here, of course, but at least it wasn't damp. Of all the subsequent “wet” girls, only two more girls thought of doing the same; the rest simply passed by without even trying to change anything in their current situation.

Free lift and return.

Mila and I waited out the main rain, and then covered the rest of the way in more comfortable conditions. The weather, however, completely deteriorated. I thought that because of the accumulated gray clouds I would not be able to even take photographs from the first site, but so far the clouds blocked my view only of Elbrus. Therefore, friends, forgive me, today there are no photos of this legend.

I decided not to climb to the very top, but it was pointless due to the overcast sky. But I decided to take the second step. True, the lift there had only one seat, so Mila refused to join me. As Baba Sveta told us, beyond the first stage you can use the lift for free. Which I took advantage of, naturally.

In fact, Mila has not lost anything, an ordinary place with another cafe and such mountain landscapes.

So I just got up, took a couple of photos and went straight down. And then Mila and I completely descended from Mount Cheget.

During our descent the sun came out again. On this occasion, we decided to try to get to Mount Elbrus. But, having reached the turn, we stood for about an hour and were unable to catch a ride. Therefore, a little tired, we returned to the base and walked around the surrounding area for the rest of the day.

Another cold night.

The main thing was to survive another cold night. However, besides the cold, another surprise awaited us: somewhere around midnight there was such a downpour that our tent simply “floated”. Somehow we dozed off until early morning, and then, under the still incessant rain, we moved our things to Baba Sveta and Tatyana’s room.

They gave us hot tea and warmed us up (as far as possible). And Baba Sveta said the magic words: “If I had known about the rain, we would have given you a room in the building, anyway, there is no one there now.” Wonderful, that is, she could put us in one of the empty rooms of the old building, and for two days we froze on the street and listened to the howling of jackals nearby.

And again, I’m not offended, because if it weren’t for these grannies, we might not have found a free overnight stay in the Elbrus region. In addition, we each received a hot mug of tea with gingerbread.

The second, quieter old woman, having prayed on the path, went to visit relatives who lived in this area. And we waited until the rain finally subsided, pulled on our backpacks and opened the door towards the first rays of the sun.

Where do we go next? Let this be another little secret that I will reveal in . You know that you can be the first to know about all the news on the site if you subscribe to the newsletter. See you, friends.

Today, the Cheget Glade (Cheget Glade, Elbrus region) is a busy place where various infrastructure facilities and hotel complexes are concentrated. Although earlier, even before the construction of the Cheget cable car, the Cheget clearing was deserted and empty. The name, in those distant years, completely coincided with reality: Cheget translated from Kabardian means a wooded slope. The undeveloped slopes of Cheget looked more like “green fur hats.” The modern glade of Cheget contains:

  • hotels in Cheget glade
  • hotels in Cheget glade
  • boarding houses of Cheget glade and tourist centers of Cheget glade.

And the most interesting thing is that the locals called literally everything after the mountain - the boarding house "Cheget", the restaurant "Cheget", the mini market "Cheget", the rental point "Cheget".

When you choose the Cheget clearing as your vacation spot, you find yourself in the epicenter of the party! You definitely won’t be bored here on winter evenings!

Ski season in Cheget

Glade Cheget is located at the foot of Mount Cheget. This is where the Cheget chairlift starts, which takes tourists to the top, to a height of 3,070m.

The slopes of Cheget differ from others precisely because of their unique mountain topography. This is a place for people who love extreme sports!

And for beginners who come to the Elbrus ski resort there is a “green” slope on Mount Cheget. Surprisingly, the easiest route is located almost at the highest point of the lift - 3000 meters above sea level.

You can see the description of the slopes and characteristics of the ski resort in the section of the Cheget Group of Companies.

The benefits of relaxing in the Cheget meadow

  • Bath complexes. A large flow of tourists, as a rule, choose a relaxing holiday for body and soul. You can get this service in the baths and saunas in the Cheget meadow.
