Seven years - one iPad: why Apple's tablet is still beyond competition. Why iPad mini is better than iPad

I recently replaced my iPad Air, which I had been using for over a year, with an iPad mini 3. And I immediately started getting questions: “Why not mini 2? It’s the same!”, “Why not Air?”, “Why do you need a tablet at all?” In this article, I will tell you why I need an iPad, why I chose this one, and briefly share my impressions of comparing it with the iPad Air.

Video story about using iPad mini 3

I'll start with the version. I took mini 3 64 GB with LTE. If there was a 32 GB version, I would consider it too, but most likely I would still take the 64. I already installed all the basics on the iPad, and at the moment I have 31 GB free with 24.5 occupied . And in the 32GB version it would be almost full, which would not make me happy. It’s also worth considering that several GB will be taken up by albums in Play Music when I can connect an additional device; now the limit has been exhausted.

I have been using 3G from Intertelecom in my tablet for several years now. I once did. I don’t have any problems with speed, nor with hieroglyphs in the status bar. The only inconvenience is associated with updating the iPad when new firmware versions are released. Updates arrive, but after installing them, the operator’s settings are lost. In order for the Internet to appear again, you need to go to the service center and there they solve everything in 5-10 minutes. This is not convenient because you have to travel (if you want to be on the current version of the software, you need to travel 5 times a year), and it also costs 50 UAH.

Internet on my tablet helps me stay on task anytime, anywhere. In 90% of any situations, you can do everything with an iPad: edit a description on Youtube, fix an article on a website, even completely edit a series of photos for review. In cases where only a laptop can help, I can distribute Wi-Fi. Well, and all sorts of nice little things, like online games like WoT Blitz, I can play even on the street.

That's sorted out. Now I’ll tell you why I chose the third generation iPad mini. I chose the mini version after the iPad 4 and iPad Air - both one and the second were quite large for me, but I liked the “minis”. However, the display in the new Mini 3 remains of relatively poor quality compared to the Air and even more so the Air 2. A year and a half ago, I concluded that the Mini 2 screen looks more faded compared to the Air; nothing has changed in the new generation. But size won.

Why not iPad mini 2? Everything is simple here - because there is no Touch ID. Using the iPad Air with the iPhone 5s, I got pretty tired of constantly entering a password when unlocking, purchasing software, and logging into some financial applications on the tablet, so I decided to overpay, but use the device with convenience. Of course, if you don't need a scanner, you can easily save 100 bucks.

Video

Along with Twitter, I check Youtube channels every day. Naturally, doing this from the iPad screen is much more convenient than from the iPhone. But this is not the only case with video. For example, the Champions League semi-final is going on right now and I don’t want to miss anything. But these days I also don’t have the opportunity to be home for the start of football, so having an iPad with 3G, I decided to find a way out. I looked at different services and settled on Divan.TV. There, a monthly subscription to almost 90 channels is only 29 UAH. Despite the fact that the application is a little more than completely poor, I was able to launch the desired channel. And a small group of us used the iPad wherever we could, but we watched the Juventus-Real Madrid match.

Games

This is the second most important point. I completely stopped playing on the iPhone and installed everything on the iPad. There is more autonomy here, and everything is visible better. I mostly play tanks - this is the best thing on mobile devices, in my opinion, but I also often open Hearthstone, flight simulators Aerofly FS 2 and Infinite Flight, sometimes goat simulator and others. Just in case, I installed all the ones I like.

Music

Unfortunately, due to Play Music's 10-device limit, I can't use the service on the new iPad. And you can remove devices from the list once a year. In short, everything is for people, and I would love to use the iPad for music in the car so as not to drain the iPhone. I will do this when I can free up at least one slot. But the main musical purpose of the iPad, as before, is music applications. I connect my iPad using iRig to the keys and use them solely as a MIDI controller. I bought a lot of good music software from KORG MOOG and other hardware manufacturers who make very good synths.

I talked about some other cases in the video, and I will answer some more questions that may arise.

For example, why didn't I consider an Android tablet? In fact, there are good Androids (the same Nexus 7 or Tab S from Samsung), but they do not have music applications, some games (for example, the excellent Aerofly FS flight simulator), and the same tanks everywhere come with stripped-down graphics, without grass. In general, I don’t understand why Google and hardware manufacturers have focused so heavily on music software? After all, when it comes to music and hardware, even Windows will come to mind faster than Android.

Why not iPhone 6 plus? The day I bought the iPad, I almost bought the 64GB iPhone 6 Plus, but abandoned the idea at the last minute. There are several subjective factors here: I don’t like its appearance; it is huge, and completely unreasonably huge; but the main thing is because there are no music applications. Those that exist are made in mobile variations and are very limited in functionality.

Why not Air? For all my tasks, I like the mini size better. On the other hand, I previously had two large iPads: 4 and Air. Using them I always wanted to try mini. So I decided to give him a chance. I’m already noticing that I take the mini with me everywhere; it’s much more convenient for use outside the home. I purchased a case from Speck - Candyshell Grip Case, which costs absolutely reasonable money and is very practical.

The tablet is held in it very tightly, I exclude the possibility of grains of sand getting inside. Also, the stripes are made of hard rubber, they should not peel off (feels like), but thanks to them the iPad is easy to hold in your hand and it does not slip on any surfaces. But the film from Speck turned out to be much worse than from the Spigen I was used to. For the home key there is not a circle, but a whole slot, for the front camera the hole is huge, and the size of the film does not cover the entire display; 2-3 mm of glass remain uncovered at the edges. I'm thinking of changing it over time, but so far it doesn't light up.

Compared to the first-generation iPad Air, the mini, as I said, has a lower-quality display, and it also has a quieter speaker, although no less high-quality. Compared to Air 2, mini 3 has half the RAM - 1 GB versus 2. I thought about this the most when choosing, but came to the conclusion that I had no problems with the first Air in terms of hardware and software operation, so I decided not to bother.

These are my cases of using the tablet. I’ll say one thing for sure – I’ve had a tablet for several years now, but I’ve never used one as often as the mini 3, which means it’s a good purchase. Well, as always, let's share our cases of using the tablet.

The iPad has its place. This is a big iPhone. And all the convenience of an iPhone on the big screen. Photos, surfing, movies, games, music…. Um...that's it? Yes all. This is where its advantages end. It's just a big toy. It’s not suitable for work (oh, now the most fanatics will throw mud at me). As an example: I went to another city with the first air. I needed to write a short report on pages 2-3. Pages. I ate as much as I could. Editing text on iOS is hell. It’s one thing to edit comments on your Facebook. It's comfortable. But when the text is large... Every time you poke, wait for the magnifying glass, drag it. You press and wait for the release. I picked it out the first time - I was lucky, it looked crooked - again. And on some sites, only the entire paragraph is highlighted. You need to zoom in and pinpoint it. Well, now explain to me - a device that is praised as a working tool should work THIS way? I’m generally silent about graphic editors. To edit something with your finger, and even with a delay, not exactly behind the finger, but a little higher/lower; Monsieur knows a lot about perversions)) Let them say so, we are selling a toy for children. Or a media center for adults. My mother mastered iPad 4 once. And now for her it’s a photo album, the Internet, movies on the road. I even learned how to book hotels and buy tickets to Europe.
So I agree that the iPad has its place, but is very limited in its purpose.
For that kind of money I take Surface 4. Which will simply tear it apart in terms of capabilities. And yes. I don’t need “vindagovno” here. Ten is a very cool system. Stable and fast. Those who claim the opposite, ordinary piss-balls who live by patterns, and go beyond their entrance only for the session, will receive their C grades.

@karasoff, here you are a vivid example of a person who tries to use a device for other purposes, and then scolds it. How to edit documents on your phone or tablet? The tablet was obviously created for Internet surfing, video and other things, and it copes with this 120%. With the help of individual applications you can add benefits: learn a foreign language, write code, draw. Well, gaming on iPad is in its prime, which cannot be said about its competitors. This is a wonderful device and absolutely irreplaceable if you need something smaller than a MacBook, but you don’t recognize a shovel-phone. So this article has no basis at all, unless it is some kind of emotional blog of a schoolgirl. And second: you were also wrong about the fans. For some time now, there really have been a lot of fans here, but not for the apple. It’s just that the site has become a kind of hack: whoever throws a bone will get a little praise. Either they sing odes to gnusmas, then they suddenly forget it and shake it with Chinese crafts. But the site doesn’t pay anything to Apple, so everyone refuses, either an iPhone or an iPad) And in the comments there are trolls, offended lumpens, to whom everything is expensive and several bots from different stores. Here is such a bestiary. But while scolding the iPhone, many forget that it is Apple’s worst product. MacBooks are so far significantly better than other PCs, and the iPad has no competitors at all. Well, the third bitter pill for you: from your comment it is clear that the problem is money. Sorry. The fact is that people who use Macs in most cases also have Windows computers (some at home, some at work). And, comparing the parameters, you can see how your top ten works) So if finances don’t allow it, then you can always squeal something about templates, “I don’t need it here,” and so on. The main thing is that a person can buy both for himself as needed, then there is no need to engage in auto-training.

@Winterblue, you are a bad analyst))) money is not really a problem. I own a 6s. I like him. That's it.
Air passed because it simply turned out to be unnecessary, as I explained everything above. You can’t use it while driving, but at home I’m much more comfortable in a chair in front of a 27″ monitor. My wife has a Mac air. I myself had a MacBook Pro 15 2013 retina. Sold it, tired of looking for analogues for a poppy axle. Yes, in many small things Apple is completely superior to Mike. But not everyday software. A simple example - why should I look for a photo program? Why can't I just look through the photos in the Finder? Press the space bar and make a list of files rather than tiles, or open each photo separately in the review program or whatever it’s called, I don’t remember. What kind of dancing with a tambourine is this?? I am not a sound engineer or a videographer. But I don’t see any other use for the MacBook. Yes, iTunes is a good, convenient thing. After the Mac, I don’t use anything else on Windows. Even when I went with Meizu.
Give me three arguments. At least three reasons why the average user should change their PC to a Mac. Please, I don’t need abstract fantasy words - stability, reliability and other verbiage. My wife has already had a gray screen with some kind of inscriptions pop up 10 times in 1.5 years and the beech went into reboot. Is this your vaunted stability?? My ten has been without antivirus for a year now, not a single reboot, etc. And also about money. Normal but not cheaper than poppy.
I5 4690k
Gtx 970
16gb ram
750 watt
Sdd, hdd
Go to Yandex and calculate how much it will all cost.
And yes, I can afford to go air pro right now. But I won't do that. Do you know why? Irrational waste of money. No rich person wastes money. I mean the rich and not their sons, moral monsters. Those who drive helicas. When my dad gave me his GL for a friend’s wedding, I drove EXACTLY the same as my ’14 Corolle. I repeat, you are a bad analyst)))

@karasoff, did you remember to take your pill? eco broke through) Firstly, this is not conducting a discussion if you ask a question and then say “just don’t need this and that.” So leave the hysteria, and here are the arguments:
1) Mac is a really stable system. Thank God I've already replaced three Macs and there are no gray screens. Neither do my friends. Do you know why? Because we don't have schizophrenia. Either you are a liar, or you are not telling the nuances (maybe your wife is running a Mac 1984). I say again, you are at war with windmills and imaginary enemies who (as you apparently would like) have bought poppies and are eating doshirak. You are at the wrong address. Mac is chosen simply because it is better. If I need it, I’ll buy it at a reasonable price.
2) A huge amount of calculation software comes in the form of assemblies for Linux or Unix. The tambourine is needed just for Windows in this case. Note that I’m talking about work, and you’re talking about scrolling through photos. Moreover, I still don’t understand what your problem was.
3) I don’t need an antivirus, and not because you “don’t need it,” but for real) Nobody listens to Kasperych, no matter how hard he tries to push his trash onto Macs. But no one has canceled worms and advertising Trojans. And if you say that you don’t know what you are talking about, then you are once again a liar, because a couple of weeks ago my colleague at the destka just received “gifts”. Are you shouting about tambourines? So on a Mac they are not needed at all for this.
And lastly, your emotions are sickening to even read. I’m talking about Thomas, and you’re talking about Yerema. Stop relaying trash about rich people already. You’re not a rich man, that smells from three miles away) Money is not wasted, but the concept of “money” is different. Or do you think that a rich man is standing and wondering if he is overpaying for yogurt? :D

@Winterblue, by the way))) about games. This is absolutely nonsense you said) freemium games with impudent donations?) will flourish) apparently you forgot about tablets with Tegra on board) and what games are released for them) you have a very narrow circle of ideas about games) and also. Those who earn enough do not laugh at others. In general, a low “I feel sorry for you” only confirms that you yourself are homeless. It’s not for nothing that I mentioned surface 4. The only thing that keeps me from buying it is the lack of an off-warranty. If I find a reliable store, I’ll buy it right away. And it costs almost as much as the 12″ top. It turns out that you are a rogue with your 60-70 thousand. For a top iPad?
I didn't mean to offend you in any way. Just don't treat people based on their status. Especially if you're not even able to. Determine their status.

@karasoff, tell me honestly, are you a schoolboy?

@Winterblue, shkolota)) how old are you?) well, what kind of collective farm jargon... I did not stoop to insults. And if you decide to swim in the mud of insults, oo, I think that wasting my time on you is very stupid. You can't prove anything to people like you. I didn't say poppies are shit. I said that they are quite narrowly targeted in use. You have treated yourself like a Devon and created a stink) who after this is, as you put it, a schoolboy?)

What to do if: the iPad glitches, the iPad slows down and the iPad freezes? We have collected 11 tips on how to solve these problems!

If your iPad is an older generation model (for example, iPad 1, 2, 3, 4 or iPad mini 1, iPad mini 2), then over time the tablet begins to work slower. The main factor why the iPad starts to slow down is wear and tear on the internal drive on which the operating system is installed.

To make your device work like new, you need to change the internal memory card, but before that, try to solve the problem using the methods listed below.

If your iPad is slow, delete apps you no longer use. Apps take up storage space, and freeing it up makes iOS easier to use. Remove any apps you no longer use.

You can delete apps you no longer use by pressing and holding the app icon until it starts jumping around. Then click on the "X" in the upper right corner to delete it.

To remove multiple apps at once, go to Settings > General > iCloud Storage & Usage. Now click Manage Storage (under Storage, not iCloud) and look for items that are taking up a lot of space. Review the app's contents, and then click Uninstall.

Also, instead of applications, you can delete unnecessary files, videos, photos, music, etc.

Restart your iPad mini, Air or Pro using the instructions below

After deleting unused apps or files, you must restart your iPad, which will refresh the tablet's memory.

To restart your iPad, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until you see the power off slide, then turn off the device.

Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button to turn on.

If your iPad is frozen, do a hard reboot:

Hold down the "Off/On" and "Home" buttons at the same time until the Apple logo appears.

Then turn on the device as usual.

Stop updating apps in the background to stop your iPad from slowing down

Once you've freed up memory on your iPad, it should speed up. But if you're using an older-generation iPad, such as the iPad mini or iPad 2, turning off features you can do without will improve the device's performance.

First, stop apps updating in the background. If you have a lot of active applications (social networks), then they will use the processing power from your iPad, even if you do not open the application.

Tap Settings > General > Background App Refresh and set Background App Refresh to Off.

You can set it up so that some of your apps use the update in the background and others don't. But we recommend that you disable all applications.

Don't update iOS (or your apps) if your iPad is slow

It may seem counterintuitive, but when a device starts to wear out, updating to the latest version of iOS may slow it down rather than speed it up. This was observed with the original iPad on iOS 5.

All these new features require more resources, and when your device reaches a certain age, it doesn't always have enough power.

The same goes for apps—as apps become more capable, they become harder to run on an older device.

Unfortunately, this item will not help those whose devices are already slow due to these updates. If you have already updated, proceed to the next step, but next time remember that updating may slow down your device.

Use standard Apple apps

Over time, some third-party applications do not update and slow down your device. Therefore, uninstall or update the old application.

If the device starts to slow down, it is best to use standard applications from Apple developers.

Clear Safari cache

Your browser cache is another place where you can clear up some storage space, which can result in small speed improvements. Safari is the browser that most often causes your device to slow down when used. This may be caused by a full cache that is stored in Safari.

To clear all Safari caching information, go to Settings > General > Clear History and Website Data. This should speed up the Safari interface.

If you have additional tips to improve your browser's performance, please write them in the comments.

Clear cache of all applications

If clearing the cache in Safari did not help, then try clearing the cache of all iPad applications.

Turn off notifications to speed up iPad

Every time you receive a notification about a new message on Facebook or about the restoration of vitality in your favorite game. Just like refreshing a background app, scanning and providing notifications can slow down your iOS device.

To turn off notifications, go to Settings > Notifications and set each app to Disabled.

The iPad glitches or the iPad slows down or the iPad freezes

Turn off location services (GPS) on iPad

While it's convenient to use location for apps like Maps and Facebook, this feature reduces battery life and performance.

Tap Settings > Privacy > Location Services and select Location Services and then Turn Off.

Be careful, the Find My iPhone feature will not work.

Turn off Spotlight

Spotlight runs a search on your iPad across all your hard drives and user information. This search tool may be slow.

Tap Settings > General > Spotlight Search and set all search results items to Off.

Enable motion reduction

Turning off some visual effects may provide faster performance. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Reduce Motion and set Reduce Motion to On.

Once you've backed up, you're ready to erase all content on your iPad and return it back to "factory default settings."

Of course, most Apple users sincerely believe that there are never too many Apple devices. But it’s not always possible to buy everything you want, and often a choice arises: is it worth saving money for another device, or will the purchase not justify itself? iPhone owners often wonder: should they also buy an iPad, or will the two devices duplicate each other’s functions? IN repairiPad Those who also have an iPhone often apply, but how justified is this? Let's try to figure out if this makes sense.

So what are the key differences?

Let's start with screen size . A smartphone is, by definition, more compact than a tablet, which means it has a smaller screen. However, Apple’s trends clearly demonstrate the convergence of the two devices in this parameter: the diagonal of the largest smartphone from Apple, the iPhone 6 Plus (5.5”), is only slightly smaller than the diagonal of the smallest tablet from Apple, the iPad Mini 3 (7.9”). However, watching a movie in a cozy cafe is still somewhat more convenient from a large screen than from a small one, which means that the iPad has advantages. On the other hand, if you are used to using the device in transport, then minimalism will only benefit you - it is more convenient to hold the smartphone with one hand.

What you do most often on your device matters a lot.

Reading books? The larger the screen, the less often you have to scroll through it, and the iPad definitely wins here. This is especially true for situations when there are a lot of pictures in the text - the larger the screen, the easier it is to view them.

Communicating or looking for information on the Internet? This is very convenient to do on both iPad and iPhone. The iPhone has an advantage in situations where you need to answer briefly and quickly, “on the go,” but when writing a long post, the spacious touch screen of the iPad is more convenient.

Listening to music ? Here the iPhone has significant advantages due to its compactness, especially if you like to listen to music while working out. It's hard to imagine jogging with an iPad in your hands!

Watch movies ? Both devices work well, it all depends on how important picture size is to you.

Use the device as camera ? The iPhone has an advantage in terms of efficiency - it is more convenient for them to take a snapshot.

Use your iPhone or iPad as navigator ? Both devices are great for this, and the choice depends on your priorities - compactness or the ability to view a larger fragment of the map.

Are you playing? ? Modern iPhones are not inferior to iPads in this aspect; most games are suitable for both devices.

Having studied all the iPad models and their characteristics, you can understand how the technologies for creating Tablet PCs have developed and progressed from 2010 to the present day.

After all, these famous gadgets, both a few years ago and now, are equipped with the most modern parts. And you can see development from them.

Moreover, some analysts suggest that iPads will eventually be the first to displace a significant part of desktop computers from the market, surpassing them, if not in power, then at least in mobility and ease of use.

iPad 1

The first iPad went on sale in 2010 and became a truly revolutionary gadget that received many technologies that other tablet PCs did not have at that time - an IPS display and a powerful gigahertz Apple A4 processor.

High operating speed, a screen with a diagonal of almost 10 inches and a capacious 6667 mAh battery made the iPad 1 popular.

However, it was still just an experimental model, with a number of shortcomings and shortcomings.

Among the disadvantages of the device were the relatively short operation time on a single charge - even such a battery was not enough for the large display and the resource-intensive iOS operating system.

In addition, the iPad was quite thick by the standards of other tablets and did not come with a camera, which is why it could not be used for video chatting.

But its body has rounded edges and stylish volume control buttons on the right side.

The developers’ original solution was the button for switching lock modes and screen orientation, which lights up green when turned on.

Another impressive characteristic is the tablet’s built-in memory, the maximum capacity of which was 64 GB.

Although the rather modest RAM parameters did not allow installing more modern versions on the tablet.

Technical specifications:

  • Screen size: 9.7 inches;
  • resolution: 768 x 1024;
  • processor: single-core, 1000 MHz;
  • cameras: none;
  • memory capacity: 256 MB RAM and from 16 to 64 GB built-in;
  • Battery capacity: 6667 mAh.

iPad 2

The next generation of iPad, which appeared in 2011, was more advanced and had many fewer shortcomings.

First of all, this concerned the amount of RAM that had increased to 512 MB - quite enough to run modern applications and install new operating systems.

In addition, the model received two cameras at once - the main one with 0.69 megapixels. and frontal with resolution (640 x 480), gyroscope and dual-core processor.

Most other characteristics, except for a more powerful processor, remained at the same level. Visually, the gadget was distinguished by the edging of the Home button, which matched the color of the body.

Tablet parameters:

  • screen: 1536x2048 pixels, 7.9 inches;
  • chipset: 2 cores, 1300 MHz;
  • cameras: 5 and 1.2 megapixels;
  • memory: RAM – 1 GB, ROM – 16, 64 and 128 GB;
  • Battery capacity: 6471 mAh.
