Make a Windows 10 theme. Ways to create an image

Themes for Windows are already a fairly old part of the Microsoft operating system. But with the arrival of the Windows 10 Creators Update, developers have made it much easier to work with themes for Windows. There is now a separate section in the store with themes, as well as a separate segment in the personalization settings. Here you will find some tips for working with themes for Windows 10.

Where to download and how to install themes for Windows 10

The theme settings section is located in the personalization options.

Open Settings, or simply click Win+I for faster transition. Open Personalization and go to the tab Themes. This is where you will customize the theme of your computer.

Themes for Windows 10 consist of four components: a background image (wallpaper), sounds, an accent color, and mouse cursors. Each of them can be configured in separate sections, or in a single place - in themes.

If the theme contains multiple background images, then you will be interested in the slideshow options. To do this, click on Background and the system will take you to the section with desktop background image settings. There you can change the time after which the wallpaper will change automatically. You can select 1 minute, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour, 6 hours or 1 day.

The important thing is that in Windows 7/8, managing themes was a little more convenient, since the operating system allowed you to choose which wallpaper from the theme would be used. You could also choose one specific picture. There is no such option in Windows 10 Settings, since Microsoft cut out the old personalization section that dates back to Windows 8/7. It’s a shame.

Bonus: You can download themes for Windows 10 not only from the store. Themes for Windows 7/8 are also perfect. You just need to find a site with themes and download them in the format .themepack.

Double click on the downloaded file and wait for the system to install it. After this, the topic will be available in the section. The same is true for themes downloaded from the Windows Store. All other features of Windows 10 themes apply to themes downloaded from outside the Windows Store. So your favorite theme from Windows 7 can be installed on new operating systems.

How to remove themes for Windows 10

Themes in Windows 10 are uninstalled in the same way as regular applications. To do this you need to open Settings - Apps & Features. In the list you need to find the downloaded theme, click on it, and then select Delete. Windows 10 will then cut out the selected theme.

Another option: open Settings - Personalization - Themes. Find the installed theme and right-click on it. Select Delete.

How to create a theme for Windows 10

  1. Set a background image. Go to Options – Personalization – Background. On the menu Background select Image and press Review. Indicate the desired picture. Alternatively, just in Explorer, click Set as desktop background image.
  2. Next, go to the section Options - Personalization - Colors. Here you can set automatic color selection (it will be obtained depending on the color of your wallpaper), select a ready-made color, or set any custom one.
  3. Then open Settings – Personalization – Themes – Sounds. Specify which set of sounds should be used for the theme.
  4. At the end in the same section Themes select mouse cursors.
  5. Once setup is complete, click Save topic. Name the file and it will then appear in the list of installed themes a little lower. To save it as a separate file, right-click on your topic and select Save topic for sharing.

This is all that beginners need to know about how to download, install, uninstall, or create a theme for Windows 10.

Greetings, dear friends, readers and visitors to my blog. Last time I wrote where you can download the design and how to install it after that.

Well, in today’s episode I’ll talk about how to create desktop themes for Windows 10 from your photos yourself, and at the end of this article, I’ll give you a link to instructions that tell you how to edit a ready-made design.

Creating a desktop theme

Preface: I want to immediately warn you that the method I described is not the only one, I only wrote about the one I use myself. If you are interested in some other way to create a design, then write about it in the comments.

So, to create your own theme for design, you first need to select a background for it; to do this, find any picture you like, right-click on it and select “set as desktop background image.”

Then, when the background is installed, open the “personalization” item, first right-click, displaying the desktop context menu and select: themes → theme options.
The next window will display all the designs available on your computer. One of them will be highlighted, this is your theme, as you can see, it has already been created and all you have to do is save it. However, before saving, I recommend editing it a little.

Just for this purpose, just below there are four elements, three of which can be edited. These are: desktop background, color and screen saver. I advise you to leave the “Sounds” element as is.

Since my blog already has detailed instructions on how to edit these elements, I, as promised at the beginning of this issue, will better leave a link to it.

When you finish editing, click on the inscription “save topic”, and then, in the window that opens, give it any name and click the appropriate button. After this, your theme will be successfully saved and you can set it as the main one at any time.

Windows 10 provides the user with a wide range of options for personalizing the appearance of the OS. You can download and install design options either directly from the official Microsoft store or using various third-party utilities. Themes include wallpaper, system sounds, mouse pointers, and a variety of color schemes. Let's look at how to change themes in Windows 10 in order to make the system design unique and as convenient as possible. In addition, we’ll figure out how to delete unnecessary topics and create your own.

Windows offers the user a powerful set of tools for customizing the appearance of the system. Let's take a step-by-step look at the process of using built-in themes and downloading additional ones from the official Microsoft store:

  1. To go to the personalization settings, open the menu and click on the gear symbol leading to the OS parameters:

  1. In the window that opens, select the block:

You can also get here by right-clicking on the desktop and selecting “:

  1. In both cases, a window for customizing the appearance of the system will open. In the left menu, select the item. Going a little lower, you can see several themes pre-installed in the system available for selection (classic is also available). If none of them are suitable, go to the official store to download others:

  1. As you can see in the image above, there are very few pre-installed themes, so let's go to the store. It contains a rich set of all kinds of designs for Windows 10 with automatic installation (from nature and architecture to anime), which are absolutely free. We browse the store and select the desired theme or enter its name in the search bar:

After downloading, the selected option will automatically become available for use and will be among the preinstalled ones.

Windows 10 allows you not only to use built-in themes, but also to create your own. Let's look at how to create a unique version of the appearance of the OS.

Create your own version

To create your own unique theme, we also go to the point in personalization. The system allows you to assign your own background image, change the color scheme, set up sound themes for various actions and select the most suitable mouse cursor:

Let's go through these points:

  1. Background. Selecting wallpaper for your desktop. You can set a single photo, a slideshow of images, or a solid fill of one color:

  1. You can also change the position of the selected photo - stretch it to fill the entire screen, set it in the center, keep the standard image size, etc.:

  1. Colors. Select the color scheme that will be applied to the tiles in the launch:

  1. Sounds. We use the built-in ones or, if desired, download our own:

  1. Mouse cursor. Select one of the cursors provided by the system or leave the standard one:

  1. Save the changes by clicking the button:

It is possible that the built-in tools for changing the design of the system are not enough, and free themes from the store do not satisfy all needs and are too standardized. In order to download third-party themes from other users, you need to unlock this feature. The UltraUXThemePatcher utility can help you do this.

Using UltraUXThemePatcher

Windows 10 developers initially prohibited the use of third-party themes that were not on the list of preinstalled ones or in the official store. The implementation of this feature is hampered by several files in the system folder. It is to bypass them that the UltraUXThemePatcher utility was developed - a kind of program for installing themes.

Thanks to this tool, the user does not need to manually search for obstructing files. The application detects them automatically. The utility is absolutely free and does not require additional permissions. It automatically detects the possibility of “patching” interfering files on a specific version of the system, which allows you to avoid unwanted problems. The user only needs to allow the program to make changes and restart the computer or laptop after the procedure.

It should be clarified that UltraUXThemePatcher does not have its own graphical interface. The application is compatible with Windows x32 Bit and x64 Bit, is installed once and does not require restarting. In other words, this is a one-time tool that gives the user the opportunity to use third-party themes. The sequence of actions for working with the utility will look like this:

  1. Download the application and open the downloaded file. In the window that opens, click on « Next":

  1. We accept the terms of the user agreement and click on "Next" :

  1. Click on the button « IAgree":

  1. The utility provides information about the system installed on the PC and the status of files to be changed. Status « not"patched" means that the files have not yet been modified. In this case, to continue the operation, click on « :

  1. The process takes literally a few seconds, and during its execution the command line window will appear and disappear. At the end of the operation, the program will notify you that you must restart the computer for the changes to take effect. Agree by clicking the button « Next":

  1. The utility will offer to immediately restart the computer or postpone this operation. Select the desired item and click on « :

The files have been patched. After restarting the PC, you can begin installing third-party themes (their uniqueness is that they are extremely different from the classic ones - for example, they may contain transparent elements). How to install a theme? To do this, download the required one and transfer the files from the archive to the following path:

From:/Windows/Recourses/Themes

Go to personalization (through the options in the Start menu or by right-clicking on the screen and selecting ) and go down to the list of preinstalled themes. Among them will be the one that was just added. To install this theme, simply click on it. The system will apply the new design automatically:

Using the UltraUXThemePatcher utility, you can quickly and easily unlock the ability to install third-party themes on Windows 10. All custom options (may even contain live wallpapers) located on the Internet (you can find them, for example, by request "topics forWindows 10"), will be easily applied using this method.

You just need to take into account that the theme must be supported by the version of Windows 10 installed on the computer. Most often, themes are developed for the following versions - Anniversary (1607) and Creators Update (1703). Usually the author of the design leaves information about compatibility.

You can check your Windows 10 version by following these simple steps:

  1. Press the Win + R key combination on your keyboard to open the Run window:

  1. We write the command « and press “OK” or Enter:

  1. All information will be provided in the window that opens:

The utility will automatically create a system restore point so that you can return it to its previous state if any problems arise.

Let's look at how to delete unnecessary topics when too many of them have accumulated.

How to remove themes in Windows 10

Each user strives to choose the best design for himself, trying many different options. In this regard, a huge number of unnecessary files accumulate on the disk that need to be deleted. Let's figure out how to do this. There are two options:

  1. If the theme was downloaded from a third-party site, then only deleting it through the system parameters will help. Let's move on to personalization (the sequence of actions was described above). Right-click on the unnecessary topic and click on:

This design will be removed from the list of available ones without further confirmation. The theme files will also be automatically deleted from the system disk:

  1. If the theme was downloaded from the official store, then you can remove it through the list of installed programs and components. Open through the menu:

  1. Select a block:

  1. We find the topic in the built list of installed programs and delete it like any other application. You can find a topic among others by name using the search bar:

This concludes our consideration of ways to change the appearance of the system.

Results and comments

If the built-in standard themes from the store are enough for you, then there is no need to use additional utilities - the official store has a huge number of options. If standard themes are not enough, then you should try UltraUXThemePatcher - the utility maximizes the possibilities of changing the design of Windows 10, allowing you to use third-party options for the appearance of the system.

Video instruction

Below you will find a video in which we show the process of installing third-party themes on Windows 10.

In Windows 7, it became possible to create your own themes and automatically change the background of the login screen. The theme you create can include the following components:

  • screensavers,

  • desktop backgrounds,

color and transparency level of the taskbar and dialog boxes.

There are options to create slideshows from background images and change the background of the login screen when switching themes.

Appearance Options

So, right-click on an empty space on your desktop and select Personalization. In the window that opens (Fig. 1) you will see three categories:

    My topics

    Aero Themes,

    Basic themes.

When installing themes that contain your own visual style, a fourth category will appear - Installed Themes.

Below are the settings for creating your own theme:

    Desktop background,

    Window color,

    Picture 1

As you can see, there is no setting to bind your cursors to a theme. This happens in a slightly different way, which will be discussed below.

    Setting the window view

By default, the already configured Aero theme is installed (Fig. 2). Click Desktop background at the bottom of the window.

    Figure 2

After configuring these settings, click Save changes and you will be returned to the main window. Now click Window color, and the following dialog will open (Fig. 3).

    Figure 3

There are already preset colors (1), but using the sliders (2) you can choose exactly the color and transparency that you need.

To fine-tune dialog boxes, click Additional design options, and go to the next dialog in which using the settings Element, Font, Dimensions And Colors You can specify additional options for your theme. After customizing the appearance of the windows, click OK.

    Setting up the sound

    Figure 4

You can customize your own sounds for each of the Windows events. If you have your own pre-configured and saved sound scheme, simply select it from the list and press the button OK.

    Screensaver selection

    Figure 5

Click Screensaver(Fig. 5), and after selecting the screen saver, click OK.

    Setting up cursors

There is no separate setting for cursors, but the saved theme includes the currently installed cursors.

The situation with cursors is the same as with the sound circuit. If you have a pre-configured scheme, install it before saving the theme and your cursors will be added to the theme automatically. To enable cursors to work in conjunction with the theme, select the checkbox Allow themes to change mouse pointers and press OK(Fig. 6)

    Figure 6

    Saving a theme

After completing the theme setup, the main window will display Unsaved topic(Fig. 7).

To save a theme for personal use, select Save topic. In this case the file Your theme.theme will contain only a description of your settings and will be saved in the folder C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Themes.

You can also choose Save topic for sharing. Then the file will have the format Your theme.themepack and saved in the location you specified. It will contain all your customized settings (wallpapers, sounds, cursors, etc.) and can be published online and installed on other computers.

Automatically change the background of the login screen when you change the theme

For the first time in the history of the Windows operating system, Microsoft developers have included such an interesting option as automatically changing the background of the login screen when the theme is changed! Previously, for example in Windows XP, this required third-party programs.

First you need to make a background image for your login background option. The file must be in JPG format, match the resolution of your monitor and be no more than 256 KB! You can convert a drawing to this format, for example, using the free program FastStone Image Viewer. The prepared file must be renamed to backgroundDefault.jpg and save to a folder C:\Windows\System32\oobe\info\backgrounds(you need to create it).

The next step is editing in Notepad your theme file Your theme.theme. This is a text file, but with a different extension, so open Notebook and drag the theme file into the Notepad window. The beginning of the open file will look like this:

    ; Copyright Microsoft Corp.

; Windows 7 - IDS_THEME_DISPLAYNAME_AERO DisplayName=Your_theme_name SetLogonBackground=0 Parameter SetLogonBackground=0 0 tells the system to use the default login background. We need to change 1 on

To check the results of the changes, enable your theme and use the menu Start - Shut down - Change user check your login background. Then switch to the Aero theme and check again. Happened? So you did everything right!

    Notes:

    • There can only be two login backgrounds - the built-in one and yours. That is, for three design themes it will not be possible to create three entrance backgrounds.
    • If there are several accounts in the system and each has its own theme and login background, then the login screen of the account whose owner last applied the theme will be displayed.

Ready-made themes can be downloaded from the Microsoft website

    Conclusion

This article walks you through the step-by-step process of creating your own theme by enabling a hidden option to automatically change the login screen background when you change the theme.

If you don't want to customize each Windows 10 design option individually, then it's better to use ready-made themes. This is a special set of styles, sounds, wallpapers that in one fell swoop changes the appearance of the operating system. You can download themes in a special gallery on the Microsoft website.

However, some users want a deeper transformation than what the themes on Microsoft's site offer. In this case, there is nothing left to do but turn to design options created by third-party developers.

Attention! Some of the third-party themes modify system files, which may cause errors or crashes. Be sure to make sure that the downloaded theme is designed specifically for your version of Windows. Before using themes, back up your important data, create a restore point, or create a full disk copy.
The editors are not responsible for the possible consequences of installing the theme.

By default, installing third-party themes on Windows is blocked. The UltraUXThemePatcher application will help fix this. Download it from this page, install and restart your computer. After this, you can install any visual styles, including those from independent developers.

Please note: some themes can simply be copied to the system folder C:\Windows\Resources\Themes, and then activated in the personalization settings. Others require the installation of additional utilities that modify system resources to function properly. Therefore, before using any theme, carefully read the accompanying documentation, which usually describes the installation process.
