Working program for lego mindstorms education ev3 on robotics. LEGO Education Software and Activities Downloads

Mindstorms EV3 is an entertaining and educational application that allows you to program robots made from LEGO constructors to perform certain actions.

In the literal sense, there is no need to program - to write the initial move in one or another programming language - in this case. The user can create certain behavioral algorithms using visual modules that control the functions of motors, motion scanners, lamps and other elements of the Mindstorms robot. The application is compatible with absolutely all designers in this line and is very convenient to use.

How to use the program

Before you start programming a robot, you need to not only assemble it, but also think through in advance the procedures that it should perform. Of course, you can create a set of instructions first, although this is not recommended.

Mindstorms EV3, modified for Windows, controls the robot using a special transmitter (included in the LEGO set), which connects to the computer via a USB port.

The application interface is a window somewhat reminiscent of a flowchart, with a work area on which visual modules for controlling the robot components are located. For example, if you have assembled a robot with a large motor, then in the corresponding visual module you can adjust various parameters: power, rotation speed, port number (if the design contains several identical elements) and others. Other active modules are configured in the same way.

Versions and instruction lists

Mindstorms EV3 can work in two modes: for beginners and advanced users. In addition, different sets of instructions are offered: basic and advanced. We strongly advise you to test the second set only after fully mastering the first.

Key Features:

  • the ability to program any robots in the LEGO Mindstorms line;
  • connecting a transmitter sending signals to the robot via a computer USB port;
  • a convenient work area, within which a separate visual module is responsible for the actions of each active element of the robot;
  • availability of complete sets for adults and children;
  • fully Russified interface in the Windows version.

Lego is constantly working to improve the programming environment and firmware of the EV3 Brick. Therefore, with the advent of new versions, it is recommended to update the software.

How do you know if there is an update? The Lego mindstorms programming environment can itself check for updates via the Internet upon startup and notify the user. You just need to allow her to do this by checking the appropriate box in the window called up by the command "Main menu" - "Help" - "Check for updates".

As soon as an update appears, the programming environment will notify you about it. You will need to follow the link, download and install the updated version of the software. Updating the programming environment is no different from the initial installation: just follow the instructions on the program installation screen.

The Lego mindstorms EV3 module is a complex device similar in design to, for example, computers or modern smartphones. Inside the EV3 module, in a special memory area, there is built-in software that is responsible for the interaction of the module with sensors, motors and executing the programs loaded into it. This embedded software is often referred to as firmware.

What is special about updating the EV3 Brick firmware?

As you already know, the Lego company develops and maintains two versions of the programming environment: home and educational. There are also two versions of firmware for the EV3 module. Which version of the firmware belongs to is clear from its name: the home version contains a serial number and letter in the name H(short for Home) - (EV3 Firmware V1.09H), educational - serial number and letter E(short for Education) - (EV3 Firmware V1.09E). Any EV3 Brick can be loaded with both home and educational firmware, so in choosing firmware be guided by the version of the programming environment you are using.

Preparing the EV3 Brick and Firmware Update Process

Warning: The EV3 Brick firmware update procedure completely erases all programs in the internal memory and restores the original settings in the Brick, resetting saved connections!

The first step is to ensure that the batteries are charged or that good batteries are installed in the EV3 Brick's power bay. Next, you need to turn on the EV3 module and, using a USB cable, connect it to your computer.

Then we load the programming environment. If the programming environment determines that the EV3 Brick firmware needs to be updated, it will warn you accordingly. All you have to do is press the button "Update firmware" and wait until the firmware is downloaded to the EV3 Brick. Once the download is complete, the EV3 Brick will automatically reboot.

If you want to download the firmware yourself, you should follow these steps:

Something went wrong...

If for any reason the EV3 Brick stops working during a firmware update, you will need to manually update the firmware by following these steps (the EV3 Brick still requires a USB connection to your computer):
1. Press and hold the " Back", central button and " button Right" on the EV3 Brick.
2. When restarting the EV3 Brick, release the " button Back".
3. When the message appears on the screen "Updating..." "Right" and press the button "Update firmware" in the Firmware Update Tool. The firmware will be downloaded to your EV3 Brick, which will restart on its own.

Force restart of the EV3 Brick

If your EV3 Brick remains powered on and suddenly becomes unresponsive to any button presses and cannot be shut down normally, you will need to force restart the EV3 Brick. Restarting the EV3 Brick does not erase existing folders and projects from previous sessions from the EV3 Brick's memory. Files and projects from the current session will be lost.
1. Make sure the EV3 Brick is turned on.
2. Press and hold the button "Back", center button and button "Left" on your EV3 Brick.
3. When the image on the screen disappears, release the button "Back".
4. When appears on the screen "Launch", release the center button and the "Left".

Mindstorms EV3 is an entertaining and educational visual programming environment from LEGO. This is a very interesting software solution, using which you can “program” robots created from the constructor of the same name. No, you don't need to write code here. The user is only required to assemble behavior algorithms from visual blocks responsible for the operation of motors, sensors, light bulbs, drives and other components from which Mindstorms robots are assembled. The program is suitable for any construction kit in this series and is extremely easy to use.

Working with the program

Before proceeding directly to programming, it is advisable to first assemble the finished robot and think through the operations that it will perform. Of course, you can write instructions first, but we do not recommend doing this. Mindstorms EV3 in the Windows version connects to the robot via a special transmitter device (included with the LEGO construction set). The transmitter connects to a PC via a USB port.

The working environment in the program consists of a project window, which somewhat resembles a block diagram, as well as a panel on which you can select the desired visual blocks to control the robot components. For example, let's say that your assembled robot has a large motor installed. By adding a special block to the chain that is responsible for working with a large motor, you can specify the power supplied to it, the number of rotations, the port number (necessary if the robot has several identical blocks) and other parameters. All other types of blocks are configured according to the same principle.

Versions and instruction sets

Mindstorms EV3 supports two operating modes: student mode and teacher mode (the second is for adults). There are also several options for the instructions used: the basic set and the extended set. Personally, we recommend moving on to the second only after completely mastering the first.

Key Features

  • allows you to program robots from the LEGO Mindstorms series;
  • connects via a special transmitter via a USB cable;
  • offers a convenient workspace in which a visual block is responsible for the behavior of each component installed in the robot;
  • offers versions for adults and children;
  • the client for Windows is completely translated into Russian.
